Solid soup dumplings found here!

The Soup Dumplings are filled with bursting flavour, to the point that losing a drop hurts you inside. It's very easy to order multiple servings 🥰⁣⁣
⁣⁣
The Chilli Oil Dumpling has gotten better in flavour that each bite makes you salivate and satisfied 😋⁣⁣
⁣⁣
The XO Vermicelli Stir Fry is also delicious to the point that the flavours of prawns and spices flow into your tastebuds, enhancing your dining experience.⁣⁣
⁣⁣
The quality has remained consistent in the past several years that it's quite a favourite on my list and it would be on yours too 😇⁣

Always enjoy eating here with my family. The best dishes is the pan fried pork buns! Chewy on the top, crunchy on the bottom and you've got juicy pork and delicious, steaming soup on the inside.

Taste of shanghai a great place to eat and relax with your mates. The food was awesome, it's very modern and it won't kill your wallet. The place was packed, the waitresses was friendly and they greet you with a smile every time you asked for assistance.

Would recommend to dine! ☆☆☆☆

Pretty good xiao long baos, where you can see them make it through the window. The service is also pretty decent. Would also recommend their shen jian bao. It is a little oily though so you might need to bear that in mind. Other than that it does satisfy your baos cravings.

Went on a busy Saturday night, was lucky that didn’t have to queue outside but apparently it was not well prepared- the table and chair weren’t wiped down and we had to wait for five minutes to ask for a menu.

However the dishes were really really good. We ordered:
Pan fried port buns
Braised bamboo shoots
Stir-fires rice cakes with shredded pork and shepherds’ purse
Stone pot steamed chicken with okra in bean sauce

The bamboo shoots were way beyond our expectations, very authentic Shanghai taste. The chicken meat was tender and the rice cakes were soft...

Definitely will come back and try out other dishes.

I've been past this place many times when I'm around Ashfield but finally decided to go inside and I don't regret it!
Ordered: Xiao Long Bao (8pieces), they were nice and soupy!, Beef Brisket & potato in stonepot, definitely a comfort dish this one, the sauce they have in this one is smooth and gravy-like. The vegetarian casserole was good too, the veggies were in a silky mushroom-like sauce.

Ill be back to this place for sure. Service wasn't bad either and seats were comfortable.

Ordered the pork & prawn wonton soup & pork xiao long bao’s! The casing on the wontons were the perfect amount of thinness, filling of the wontons were cooked perfectly with the soup really complimenting the wontons! Xiao long bao’s were super tasty!! Prices are very affordable! Seatings also very nice with authentic chinese decor used as plates which was aesthetically pleasing! 9/10

UPDATE - 9 August 2018: I've just changed my rating from 1 to 5 stars, after hearing the great news that ToS Ashfield has put my favourite dish back on the menu. Congratulations to ToS management for being so responsive to customer feedback! I'll leave my original review below, in the hope that it inspires others to fight for the dishes they love...

ORIGINAL REVIEW:
I'm afraid that after about eight to nine years of almost weekly visits to Taste of Shanghai in Ashfield, my family and I have now decided to shift our loyalty across the road: they've lost me us as customers, at least until they reintroduce their luobosi subing (radish thread flaky pastries - sometimes called Shanghai turnip croissants, or other names).

They've just undergone a major renovation - and name change: they're now called Seek and Stone (yes, I'm still trying to figure that one out, too). And the one dish that has reliably brought me back again and again with my family has been the radish pastries. Also, when we've wanted to take visitors out for a meal, this has been one of our first choices for lunch. My conservative estimate is that over the time we've been going there, we've spent in excess of $14,000.

But today, when we turned up for our first visit after the renovation, we were told that the dish had been removed from the menu. The reason? "Because we've changed the menu." Not sure that this counts as a reason, but we immediately voted with our feet, and went across the road to the New Taste of Shanghai, which, we discovered to my great pleasure, offers their version of radish pastries (not quite up to the same standards as T of S, but okay).

*** Please, Taste of Shanghai manager, if you're reading this, can you seriously consider putting this dish back on the menu? We're still going to be visiting Ashfield for lunch weekly for most of each year, so our loyal custom is still available to be won back. ***

Woah! Everything I tried here so far have been awesome. Top dish is soup dumpling and the combination noodle. Dan dan noodle is good too; bit of spice, can really taste the sichuan pepper. Recently I tried the stir fry noodle with minced pork and preserved vegetable, cant get enough of this.

Taste of Shanghai is a solid place serving authentic Shanghai cuisine. The pork ball and pea sprouts are the highlight dishes that we just can't get enough. Rice/noodles dishes are not as impressive though.

...The bottom of the bun was perfectly browned and crisped to perfection. The dough was thick enough to contain the soup and meat without breaking apart and the flavour fills your mouth with umami and the perfectly balanced flavours of meat and fried dough. The only thing to be aware of is that if you leave these buns for too long or try to take them home, the soup will soak into the dough and you’ll lose that element of the dish

Food service is fast and frantic. The dumplings are delicious, hot and fresh. Portions are generous and good value for money.
My favourites are the rice cakes with shredded pork and shepherd's purse, xiao long bao and the pan fried pork dumplings.

We intended to go to New Shanghai but the wait was too long so we crossed the road over to Taste of Shanghai and we were not disappointed!! Soup dumplings and pan fried pork buns were delicious however the chilli oil dumplings lacked flavour (a nice hit of chilli would of made a big difference). Overall, very enjoyable and affordable meal.

This is a good place to go if you love hand made noodles and house made dumplings. However, if you are particular about customer service do stay away.

We had the pork dumplings which were a bit gingery for my liking... The shredded pork pancakes, fried rice and salt and pepper prawns were tasty. The hero of this place is the hand pulled noodles- however mine tonight weren't as chewy as they normally are... I love the chewy texture.

My Mum had ordered wine, and we had to remind them five times, to which they looked incredibly confused. On the sixth attempt, one waitress just said 'no left' and slammed a plate on the table. Like I said, customer service sucks. So I will minus the points for that one.

If you ask me to rank it's food, I would say 4.5, but as the problem most Chinese restaurants have, the service is pretty crap. I have to pour hot water into my tea by myself, ask for napkins and some of the girls there are like they are my boss kind of look... But anyway, we here for food, so let's talk about food.

Highly recommend: xiao long bao. Most authentic one I tried here. Thin skin, warm soup inside ( most important part lol) and delicious texture. 2. Deep fried barramundi, really good, one of my favorite dish. Have to try. 3.the deep fried man tou as dessert: have to try. Too good to describe. 4.the pork in sweet soy sauce with pancake. Yummy! 5. Eggplant in sweet chilli vinegar, recommended with white rice. The food in general is pretty good.

My favorite Shanghai food place for xiaolongbao and shengjian bao.
Other food and dish can be very tasty as well, but quality has not been consistent. So hard to recommend.
Price has gone up for the last few years. I would say if the food and service quality can stay at the top level that it has been, the price is very reasonable.
But I would choose a more expensive option for a more predictable outcome.

Brought a friend here who loves pan fried dumplings and this didn't disappoint. There were lots of soup in the dumpling which is always a good thing! The downside of the experience was the oiliness of the food which left a greasy experience that night. Also, staff who brought us our fried rice simply 'threw' it on our table without giving proper eye contact or any other indication of politeness.

On my never ending want of dumplings everyday all the time.. (True story) we decided to try Taste of Shanghai because we usually almost exclusively go to Din Tai Fung.
The restaurant was almost full but we didn't need to wait. 2 of us about 630pm on a Saturday.
Upon being seated you are brought s pot of tea which was nice.
The steamed dumplings and pan fried dumplings are amazing!! We loved the crunchy bottom on those pan fried dumplings are soooo good.
We got the shallot pancake which was so good I'm thinking about it now....
We got a half serve of Peking duck pancakes which was perfect amount of duck meat, fat and crunchy skin.
Some pan fried noodles with beef and some sautéed chilli beef. Yes we might have over ordered but it was amazing delicious and the total bill came to $93!!

Pretty much a regular at taste of shanghai, ashfield and the world square one. They're both very good and make delicious xiao long bao! My favourite dishes to order are the shan dong chicken they always manage to get the skin just the right level of crispyness and enough sauce for you to enjoy it. The sang jian pan fried dumplings are also super delicious! Get in early if you're here for either lunch or dinner because it gets packed out quick!

We had dinner here last night. Popular place on a Friday. Wait about 15 mins not bad.
Food isn't super cheap, works out at $30 a head for. Main and a beer.

But the food is good and comes out fast.

Recommended.

This place is always packed, but the wait for a table isn't that long. Service is nothing special, just straight to the point. Nothing romantic or fancy, and not really a place to linger after dinner either. Food is decent and reasonably priced. The dumplings are nice, though the fried rice is unfortunately quite bland and oily. The main dishes look really good, though I only order dumplings here.

There's something so enjoyable about eating dumplings. Dishes range from the cheap-and-cheerful to high $20, even higher if you'd like to have made-to-order mud crab. Featured on the menu aren't just the ubiquitous Shanghainese dumplings and noodles, but other dishes that evoke curiosity like stir-fried bean starch, fried bread with condensed milk and deep-fried radish pastries. Be warned that the wait can be as long as over half an hour on weekends. Xiao long bao are sturdy parcels are full of the mandatory hot broth and a good amount of tasty pink pork. Pop the whole morsel in your mouth and gobble it all up in one go.  Shredded pork and vegetable stir fried noodles are slippery, glossy, thick noodles slathered in a sauce that seems to be both savoury and sweet at the same time, tossed with shredded pork and Chinese greens. The chewy, saucy noodles are insanely addictive.

I gasped slightly when this was placed on our table. The fish looked so intimidating and yet it was bathed in sweet and sour sauce. It reminded me of the scene in Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban when Neville imagined Professor Snape in his grandmother’s clothing. I’ll LINK the scene in case anyone needs their memory jogged. On to the fish, it was very crisp even though it was covered in sauce. My mother made a note about the fish being steamed really well within the fried batter. I apologise for not having much of an opinion on this dish as I was already halfway towards a food coma.

Xiao Long Bao (小笼包) is pretty much a must have in any ToS visit. I had it in my Ashfield visit but didn’t take pictures there. But I couldn’t resist this particular time. Ahh, so good – they do rival Din Tai Fung, despite many opinions to the contrary. But hey, everyone’s only got their own opinion, right? My parents have been to both and said something I couldn’t even comprehend, but I think it translated to something along the lines of “it’s way better in China”…

The dumplings are filled with great tasting broth and we usually go for a second round later on in the meal, ordering later keeps them piping hot and delicious Baked Bran I’m actually still not sure why they called this dish baked bran, it’s more of a mix of cold tofu and mushrooms. The whole dish is marinated in a sweet soy based sauce which gives makes it juicy, it’s quite tasty overall so I generally try to order this whenever I can – they seem to run out half the time I’ve tried to order it though! Sydney's Best Kept Secret!. The first time my partner and myself went to Taste Of Shanghai, we were walking around Ashfield trying to decide on which place we'd most like to eat (Mind you, we're quite particular when it comes to picking a place).
Rule #1 for me is that I will never eat in an empty restaurant. Going off that, we looked into a few places that were pretty busy, but we weren't ''feeling it''. We had a look into some fancy places like New Shanghai which was PACKED! We were trying to decide on either New Shanghai or Taste of Shanghai.
Now, the lines weren't exactly ''out the door'', but we had a peek into Taste of Shanghai and saw that it looked pretty customer friendly and walked right in.

We were greeted at the door by waitstaff right away and were seated at a table that had a couple sitting at it (everyone was at a table like that). We felt a little unsure at first but then after a minute or two, we felt like it was just really friendly and close-nit :)

We were given a complementary starter of broad beans and some sort of seaweed. It was really tasty!! We were also given a pot of tea with our menu, it was lovely idea to snack on our tasty starter while we waited for our food :)

The menu we were given had lots of pictures in it of the food. The room was also decorated with the pictures of the specials. I looked around the room at the big pictures of the specials on the wall and flicked through my menu multiple times. We just couldn't decide! There were only two of us and we wanted EVERYTHING! We of course ordered the steamed pork and chive dumplings, as these are a must for us at every Chinese restaurant that serves them. I decided to get the steamed XiaoLongBao (mini pork buns). I had never tried them before and gave it a go. We were going to get a main but read that the dumplings were portions of 12, so we ordered another pork and chive dumpling dish, pan fried.

We loved the tea and before we knew it, we were out of tea. So we put it to the side of the table with the lid up. Within a minute, a waitress grabbed it and replaced it right away. We gobbled all the starter up and were then served the mini pork buns. I had no idea what they were. I put some chilli and soy sauce in my bowl and dipped the pork bun into it, bit into it and out squirted some sort of juice! I was kind of surprised but it was good. A little too soupy for my liking, but still good.
We were served our other two dishes promptly. We tried the steamed pork and chive dumpling, and WOW! A big juicy ball of pork in the middle with chives that you could see and taste! It made my tastebuds stand on end. These were much better than a lot of other places we'd been! We inhaled the steamed pork dumplings and were onto the pan fried dumplings, beginning to feel full.
I'm not usually into pan fried, but my partner really wanted them.
They were crispy on the outside and still very plump and juicy on the inside. I bit into mine and scooped up my little chilli and soy sauce mix into the dumpling :) It was so good! The both of us were full but still fought for the last tasty dumpling.

The last test was THE BILL!! Was it going to cost for all this good service and quality food?
As we went to pay, we had to double check that they had the right table and dishes. It was by far the cheapest place for it's quality that we'd been to.

We knew we'd definitely be back. We've been back there lots of times and ordered mains and of course the dumplings and have never been disappointed.

DECIDING BETWEEN TASTE OF SHANGHAI AND NEW TASTE OF SHANGHAI:
The comparison -

Just last night, we decided to see what all the hype at New Shanghai was about. Not even close to as amazing as this place was. The service was TERRIBLE! I asked to order twice and for my chilli to come out twice. We waited for a while before being seated and then had to flag down a waitress to be served, otherwise we'd never eat! Their food is also good, but for the service? No way, I'll always return to Taste of Shanghai!!

We first discovered Seek & Stone during Covid lockdown. Ordered take away many times and have only recently eaten in the restaurant. The black pepper crab was delicious. They were out of a couple of dishes we wanted but otherwise this restaurant is on my top places to go. I was able to use my dine NSW voucher so all good.

Seek & Stone by Taste Of Shanghai aced two dishes I order quite a lot. Shandong chicken ($20.80) arrives in a fragrant cloud with super crisp skin sitting over moist slices of bone-in bird. Flash-fried cubes of wagyu steak ($32.80) are the other standout. The beef hunks have been beautifully seared so retain their moisture and have added flavour from caramelisation that sings against button mushrooms and black pepper sauce. I’d order both dishes again without hesitation. Fried rice ($12.80) taken in the Shanghainese style with pork lard, diced salted pork and green vegetables is a clean & enjoyable foil to these saucy dishes. While there is a short wine list, for this impromptu midweek meal, I opted for beer, preferring the Blue Swimmer summer ale ($8) over my usual Tsing Tao ($7). I was pleased to note a couple of dishes I’d never eaten before, like rice cakes ($13.80) wok-fried with vivid greens and shredded pork, and Shanghainese sticky rice dumplings ($9.80). While I loved the slippery rice cakes, the dumplings ate a little dry and bland for my liking. While I enjoyed piling Sichuan-style shredded pork ($21.80) into soft steamed lotus wraps ($5/6) the ginger-heavy sauce was way too sweet for me. That said, I left this busy, neon-lit dining room with a positive impression.

The food here is on another level. The day I went was on a Friday and so I eat seafood on Fridays. I was thinking that the seafood might not be as good as the meat dishes but the flavours were perfect and I could not stop going for more servings. I am definitely going to go another day to try their meat dishes!
