I watched on enviously as several plates of dumplings were brought out and served to the other patrons, eagerly awaiting the Pork and Chinese Cabbage Dumplings ($10.8, 12pcs) that we had ordered. Once a plate was finally set down upon our table, I could hardly wait for Ming to stop taking her photos so that I could take my first bite. Once I did, I realised that these were exactly what I had been looking for: comforting old-fashioned pork dumplings that were juicy enough to have a bit of a soupy flavour, but not so much as to make the dumplings soggy. It had clearly been too long since I last had some dumplings like this, because I would have gladly sat down to a meal of these alone.
The restaurant appears as a low key little Asian place, which has good appeal as being authentic.
The service ladies were nice, but only one seemed to take orders, so this made for slow service in ordering.
The food is great though. The dumpling pastry was delicate and the flavours were great.
We ordered a shredded pork dish and it wasn't really as expected. But the flavour was great. Just didn't want all the other bits of bamboo and mystery items that were in the dish.
Prices reasonable.
Absolutely love the pork buns! I think its definitely one of the best places to go for pork buns. Also, try the skewers and various dumplings on offer.
Dumplings are a girls best friend?! Well this girl anyway 🤗
What better place to find them than @shanghainight, Ashfield.
So there are about 3 to 4 restaurants, all with similar names and run by the same people. You always see them rushing stuff from the older shop to the new ones.
Well my favourite one to go to, because it’s not overly packed with lines, is the oldest one. It’s different to the newer spaces. The food is the same and man do they make some spectacular dumplings.
I thoroughly enjoy the fried (of course) pork and chive dumplings. Be forewarned of the hot squirt of juices that usually burn my tongue on the first bite, because I’m too impatient to wait for them too cool down. The flavours are so hearty and deeply warming to me and man are they tasty 🤤
Where is your favourite dumpling spot?

真的很爱他们家的生煎包和小笼包,是我在悉尼吃过最好吃的。
If you love dumpling, this is a MUST to try. The most delicious dumpling that I ever try in Sydney, they still have a lots of delicious food, likes noodles, fishy and many more.
This place is my partner and I go to place for Chinese dumplings! Our usual order is the pork and chive dumplings (18 pieces for ~$11), full of flavour and the dumpling chef (usually a lady) is always wrapping the dumplings by hand so its a guarantee that its fresh! I would also recommend the stir fried seafood noodles in XO sauce (not on the menu, request from waiter) $15.
Update (28/3/18) : I had the best pork dish of my life! MELT IN YOUR MOUTH!
Order on the Chef Special Menu: Braised Pork Hock in spicy and soy sauce ($19.80), you get a large piece of pork with buk choy. so worth the money!! 10/10
The manager is a very friendly guy and he likes to engage in conversation with other customers.
Restaurant can get noisy from a lot of customers on weekends.
Would recommend for a cheap chinese feed :)
This is one of my favourite Shanghai restaurant. I've been going here for years but it's been ages since my last visit.
Came here for dinner and wasn't disappointed.
The restaurant is small but very popular so it's generally full which makes it really loud in the place. The decor is odd with no real theme. There's pictures and paintings on one wall of pastries and fruit while on the opposite wall there's pictures of horses and abstract art.
The food is obviously the real attraction. It's delicious despite being a tad oily. We had Xiao Long Bao, Sichuan Chicken and Rice Cake with Shredded Pork. Everything was tasty. The Xiao Long Bao had real ginger flavour with the delicious pork juicy filling.
This is our go to Chinese restaurant. Pork and coriander steamed dumplings, shallot pancakes and pork noodles are a staple. It hasn’t changed in the 7 years we’ve been visiting.
Very tasty food and reasonable price, one of the most authentic Shanghai Cuisines I've ever tried in Sydney. Small venue but tidy, fast serving.
If you want value for money, this is the place to go!
For those that want no-fuss, hearty dumplings, you'll be coming back again and again. Don't let the humble decor fool you. My staples here are the steamed prawn dumplings, steamed/fried pork and chives, and chicken and shiitake dumplings. These little morsels are full of flavour and can feed a group easily.
I can also recommend their xiao long bao, duck pancakes and zhajiangmian (fried soy paste and mince noodles).
Came here cause the wait to New Shanghai (next door) was 40 minutes. Wasn't disappointed.
Affordable, surprisingly delicious, satisfying!!!!!! ❤️🤤 Tried a bit of everything and it was all tasty (and I got a picky tongue). Food is fresh and you can see a chief hand making various items. The food and price makes up for ambience.
Highlights: Xiao long bao 8 pieces ($7.80), pan fried pork bun 10 pieces ($9.80) hand made shangai noodles w/pork ($9.80) & Mongolian beef ($14.80).
Would recommend.
Great value for money, family run business and un-comparable for price to quantity. Dumplings are tastey and filling. Family member is at the kitchen and you can see them prepare the food. Chinese tea is average.
Best dumplings in ashfield 😀 there is a woman who serves tables who treats non Chinese patrons like rubbish but i go anyway because the food is amazing. My fave's are the steamed dumplings and the laksa. Delicious.
We've been a customer for a long time with Shanghai night. Great prices and the Xiao Long Bao is delicious, really enjoyed it. strongly recommended.

Came to Shanghai Night with family for a quick and cheap dinner in Sydney's "Little Shanghai" last week. We ordered Shanghainese staples like Xiao Long Bao (小笼包) and Sheng Jian Bao (生煎包) as well as some other dishes such as a Crispy Chicken, Pork Knuckle and Spicy Pork. The quality of the typical Shanghainese dumplings was very high, particularly in the case of the Xiao Long Bao. The other dishes were also of good quality, particularly in the case of the Crispy Chicken. The best part was that all of this was incredibly good value. Some dumpling dishes on the menu charged just over $10 for 18 good quality dumplings. The only let down was the waiting time on some dishes. While the dumplings were served very quickly, the pork knuckle hadn't been cooked even by the time we finished our meal and we had to take it away.
One of my favourite places for Shanghai food. It's more traditional and causal compared to your modernised Shanghai restaurants. They do amazing food for cheaper and it feels a bit more authentic than their rival restaurants. Their serving sizes are huge! So ordering this much for 4 people even seemed like too much. Next time I'll know better!
This is my favourite place to go for Chinese dumplings. It is the closest to the real deal in Sydney that I've tried. It's not much to look at but the Chinese fried bun as featured in my pics are an absolute must try! When I first moved to Sydney I used to dream about them in my sleep and wake up wanting to rush to Ashfield. (Surprisingly the same restaurant, they've been around long long time.) The steamed dumplings (Xiao Long not to be confused with Jiao Zi which is a different kind of dumpling) are fantastic too but we couldn't finish so did order.
We also tried the Chef's special stir fry this time and it is sooooo delicious my husband devoured it while he was on the mobile. I can't remember the name so if you are interested perhaps show them the pic. It's a bit chilli but if you can take the heat give it a go.
I highly recommend this place over the nicely renovated one next door if you want an authentic experience. Don't let the less westernised ambience and service deter you. Better food and better pricing is worth the trade off!
You'll find an establishment with every variation of Shanghai in its name along the Ashfield food highway - Shanghai Night, New Shanghai, New Shanghai Night... and for something different, Taste of Shanghai across the road.
We visited Shanghai Night one weekday afternoon and despite there only being other two other tables of diners, service was a little slow and somewhat abrupt. However, the on-site made dumplings are tasty and very reasonably priced.
Wait times can be a while, and service a little bit off, but it's all worth it for the food. Mapo tofu with Sichuan peppercorns numbs the mouth in a very pleasurable way. Pork belly with quail eggs is gelatinous and delicious. Watermelon frappe is soothing if you're not good with chili, though the citron tea is also awesome. Xiao long bao is fantastic here too.
Shanghai Night Restaurant at Ashfield has been open for many years - and has always delivered.
They simply have the best wontons and dumplings I have ever eaten.
On today's menu was my absolute favourite wonton dish - Si-Zhuan Dry Wonton with cucumber and chilli oil. It is the best wonton dish ever. It's spicy hot, so be warned. But the flavour is out of this world.
Sure the decor is dated and simple - but who cares with food this good.
You MUST visit and indulge.
Food was nice here and at a reasonable price. Dumplings are great value here if you get the 18 piece option. However the lemon chicken quality has definitely degraded over time from the best to barely passable because they now use much less real chicken. There's a lot more puffy flour batter than before.
Good option if you can't wait for the huge line next door.
WOWZERFOR VALUE, TASTY NOODLES & DUMPLINGS. For an authentic and tasty meal, I go to Shanghai Night in Ashfield for a feast. Shanghai Night can be a popular haunt. It gets filled up by many families and locals so I try to get there a bit earlier before 12. It's known for it's
•Favourite Shang place in Sydney
•Well priced and really good pork dumplings (Xiao long bao)
•Must also try - pork buns, pumpkin cake, chilli fish (spicy and the best), drunken chicken (you won't get drunk from it) and sprouts with XO sauce
•Normally busy, they have upstairs too, atmosphere feels like you are in the back streets of China in a hidden jewel
This place is fantastic. I had fried noodles with bbq pork and steamed chicken dumplings. They make their dumplings fresh to order next to the cash register. The food was so yummy and I would highly recommend it. Just a heads up though, they are sweet and friendly but completely run off their feet busy (it was packed by 7:30pm). Expect to put a bit of an effort into making sure you get the wait staff's attention for tea or to order. Or look at the menu online and order as soon as you sit down! Having said that, I know exactly where I'll go next time I want a delicious cheap feed in a happy atmosphere.
“I got this” says Walter. Um, no he ain’t.
His chopsticks zone in on one of a of a dozen dainty dumplings, like a hungry eagle swooping in on prey. Except this prey isn’t playing nice, the slippery and slightly damp dumplings pop out of the choppies' grip, to the left on the first try, to the right on the second.
Zha jiang mian is another tricky beast. It lands on the table looking all coy and innocent. Three different distinct regions; sliced cucumber, minced pork and handmade noodles – all ready to be mixed. Those noodles are seriously hard to grab.

Last Sunday we were craving for some dumplings and so Mr.P suggested to have lunch in Ashfield, the home of all the yummy Shanghai cuisine which specialises in Dumplings. Our original destination was New Shanghai restaurant, but even at 1:30PM, the queue was horrendous! Luckily, he said that Shanghai Night serves great foods as well. So we head there and had to wait for around 15mins. Looking at the menu, I was surprised to see how relatively cheap the price of the foods are. Will look in detail on the prices of each dish later on. On the right of the entrance is where the dumplings were made and then they were brought to the kitchen for the cooking process. The place was not too big and most of the waitress can't really speaks English, I'm thankful that I know some Mandarin so I can communicate with them for ordering and other stuff ;p On my way to our table, I couldn't help but seeing all those big plates of foods on every table. So glad I came to this place. Cheap and Big Portion! F
This place is renowned for its dumplings, and you can even see them being made behind a glass panel at the back of the dining room. Deft hands mould and pinch delicate, white skins around the minced fillings to craft identically sized and shaped dumplings, ready for a steamer. Thankfully, for noodle fiends like myself, there is also a good selection of dishes on the menu
Shanghai Night Xiao Long Bao, Handmade Noodles Yummy handmade noodles – though heavy on the sauce. Chinese Noodle Restaurant in the CBD is superior. Xiao Long Bao are delicious filled with delicate meat and savoury soup! Shanghai Night Chicken and mushroom dumplings These dumplings – we ordered the large serve – were nice but I should have gone for another pork filling – pork is always the winner for dumplings! Shanghai Nights Fried Sliced Rice Cake Now this was the weirdest dish. I ordered it thinking it was the glutinous sliced rice cakes stir fried with veggies in sauce that I buy from Dumpling King in Adelaide. This was completely different, but it wasn’t too bad! This is my artistic bun. The most surprising part of the lunch was the price – super cheap! I’d lo
The food here is to die for, and they could easily charge twice what they do. The interior is a bit off-putting, and the lack of english speaking staff were sometimes problematic, but with 7 dishes coming in at $50.40, we left incredibly full (with leftovers!) and very satisfied.
The restaurant is little shabby looking with the requisite laminate tables, faded menu and hand written specials on the wall.
I found the language barrier at Shanghai Night was a little annoying but the food was delightful. It came out warm & looking delicious.
I just love the steamed dumplings here. There is pork mince and soup inside. I love how they pack the dumplings with pork mince, they certainly don't skimp on it. When you take a bite and the hot soup oozes out, your tastebuds will thank you! Mmm.. They m
Reasonable price. Yummy food. Will go back again.
Best Shanghainese food in Sydney. Been coming here almost 2 decades. Best Shanghainese food that I have had outside of Shanghai.
Great xiaolongbao 小笼包 and shengjianbao 生煎包. Fantastic noodle soup menu. Very low prices.
I always leave extremely satisfied and surprised at how little it cost.
Stuffed a group of 5 people for $80 until they were waddling out the door.
I like the Xiao Long Bao here. Not too small like Din tai Fung. Not to big like Chinese Noodle Restaurant.
Love the fish and shallot dumpling :-)
Overall nice food, will go back to try other food
So Tasty. Bill ended up $10pp for a table of 10. I was absolutely stuffed full of dumplings :) We had lots of different types and all were great!
No frills, cheap and tasty!. If you're after a quick meal, something satisfying and cheap then this is one i always come back to wether it be with me and my partner or with a few friends to try more of the large menu. Service here is super quick, next door (new shanghai, swankier looking but not necessarily better tasting) is always busy so it's easier to get a seat here. For the best xia long bao, din tai fung wins my vote (the dumpling skin here is just too thick for my liking) but if you love pan fried shanghainese pork buns then these are by far the best I've ever had. An earth shattering crispy bottoms with soft and yet fluffy top, filled with steaming soup too!! The zha jiang noodles (sort of like asian spag bol) is good too if you're after sth else other than dumplings.
Delicious dumplings and noodles. Have eaten here 3 times and have yet to be disappointed with any of the meals we have had. The pork dumplings are tasty and pan fried or steamed just the way I like them. Char kway teow, beef noodles and stir-fried noodles with pork are delicious and servings are plentiful. The service isn't great, staff aren't very attentive and we had to chase down chilli sauce several times as well as a serving of dumplings which we hadn't received. Food generally comes out very quick though and prices are good.

Awesome Shanghainese stir-fried noodles. This dish is a fantastic find - silky noodles from a fiery wok with smoky charred aromas and tender strips of pork. Simple yet delicious.
Great dumplings. They definitely have great Xiao Long Bao and also yummy fried dumplings!
Best Dumplings!. This place has the best dumplings. The service is minimum but it's cheap. If you order the pan fried pork buns you will be hooked, but be careful - try to let them cool or you will get a squirt of boiling juicy filling!
Delightful dumplings! The pan fried crab meat and shallot buns were amazing!
Great chef special dumplings! Reasonable prices, try the xiao long bao, but wait for it to cool before you eat
Best xiao long bao in Sydney. Enough said.
The best vegetable dumplings I've ever tasted and it's almost cheaper than cooking yourself

Came here for a late dinner and it was great!
The workers were so lovely and friendly, which I didn’t expect given how late it was in the evening.
We ordered the Shanghai spicy beef noodle soup and handmade fried noodles with chicken and vegetable.
We also had the xiao long bao and prawn hargow. Everything came out so quickly and it was delicious. Coming back here to satisfy my late night dumpling and noodle craving 🤝✨🥟🍜
Busy, buzzing, no fuss Chinese restaurant with a very extensive menu and good value offerings. Food was very tasty. Service was prompt. You don't come here for the atmosphere, lighting or decor - the food speaks for itself. Complimentary Chinese tea is a nice touch.
Best dumplings in Sydney!!!! nice food and price.
The owner is always hospitality.
Yum! We shared Panfried dumplings, shallot pancake, cold combination noodles, and mongolian lamb. There were tradies there straight from work, a very informal feel.
We have been going here since the 90s. High quality food at cheap and cheerful prices. My faves are the pan fried pork buns, steamed pork and chive dumplings, drunken chicken, pan fried dumplings plus many more. Service is homely, the boss is from Shanghai and has learnt Cantonese to serve customers.
