Reviews Baker In The Rye

After reading the mixed reviews about the service, I was pleased to encounter down-to-earth and helpful service from the lady at the counter, and also the barista. Upon seeing my confused look on what to order, and the different types of rye bread on offer, both patiently answered all my queries and set me on the right track.

We tried the walnut and honey slice, Napoleon slice, beef Piroshki and almond croissant. All were delicious, especially the beef Piroshki. It was crispy, and stuffed with a juicy and meaty filling of beef and cabbage. Both the slices were perfectly balanced in sweetnes, with delicate and refined flavours.

It would be very uncharacteristic of me to leave a bakery without some bread, and I settled on the Borodinsky Rye. It was superb! The aroma was heavenly, and it possessed a dense yet moist texture. Taste-wise, there was a subtle hint of sweetness, and the signature tang of sourdough.

The skinny latte wasn't excellent, but it was certainly passable. Anyhow, with such delicious bread and baked goods, I'm content as can be.

Love this bakery. The bread here is fantastic, it's very wholesome. Especially the rye bread! Pastries are also delicious. Highly recommended.

Came here today on the pursuit of some fruit bread, and in true Maddie Style- came out with two loaves instead of 1. I wanted the traditional seeded fruit loaf but they had a new type available (Lithuanian Prune and Linseed Rye) and there were some samples to try. It was too delicious not to get! It was a fruit loaf, but had an almost savoury taste to it- it was quite dense but not dry and very delicious! The regular seeded fruit loaf was also incredible - delicious and soft with real hints of orange in there! This will become a regular purchase of mine!

Bought some bread here which was a nice loaf but was also convinced by the excellent salesperson to try a plum jam donut fresh out of the oven and my god it was probably the best donut of my life.

Oh my gosh what a place to carb it up. I'm a huge fan of rye and love Russian breads so this place was for me.

The Moscow rye was slightly tangy and full of flavour. Crispy on the outside and great toasted. Saw a few other style rye I'll get next time but my standout was the spinach and cheese roll! So damn good.

The sausage roll was also delicious- as were the jam filled donuts and I picked up the best Riverina milk too.

Pretty much I'll live here as the breads were 5/5

I've been looking for a good rye baker for a long time and today I found it! Yahoooo haha

This Russian/Polish baker is spot on. I read some reviews on here which were mixed so I'm glad I made the effort to go.

This cafe is near Balaclava train station so I'm not sure why the addy is St Kilda east. I almost caught a tram to St.Kilda so I'm glad I didn't.

The staff were absolutely lovely, really friendly and chatty. I ordered a strong skinny latte from the young barista which was perfect, thank you. No photo as I forgot.

I've never seen so many different varieties of rye bread in my life. It was awesome!

They had Borondinsky Rye, Polish Rye, Latvian Rye, Riga Rye, Oalousky Rye, San Fransisco sourdough rye. Some of the bread was sugar free and yeast free... perfect for me and yummm

I ended up buying a sugar free rye bread, which I'm think was the Oalousky rye with a great crust. In fact it was THE best crust that I've ever had on a rye bread. Wow!

I also brought a sweet bun similar to the one that I used to have with my family and friends. We had ours with a coffee or a cup of tea but our sweet bread has cinnamon. The bun today wasn't sweet which was good but OMGosh it tasted delicious.

They have a $15 eftpos minimum or they charge you 50c so I ended up buying a bagel (at the assistants recommendation) to get me over the $15 mark lol.

I was having a good chat to the staff and I noticed the Piroshki beef on the counter. This is cabbage and minced beef covered in batter and deep fried. This was an artery choker but it was sooo worth it hahaha 5/5 Yummmmmm

Well I've almost half a loaf of the rye bread and the sweet bun since I've gotten home haha. Yes I'm a lover of good bread and now I've found my baker.

This place is worth travelling for. I did today and I'll be travelling a lot in the future haha. And the best part is that this place is open 7 days a week. Perfect 😊

Our new local for rye! The service has improved since moving locations and the range of rye bread to try is amazing!!

My only negative has been the very average fruit sourdough. Stick to the rye breads and all will be good in the world!

Great service from the young lady working here.. very accommodating! The sandwhich deal with a coffee for $10 is great value for money and delicious. Coffee is satisfying and the bread is very tasty. Great lunch option when you are strapped for time.

Hands down the best bread in Melbourne; you won't find a better selection of rye sourdough. Polanga and Bavarian are my picks. Great coffee too!

For East European-Russian bread and cakes you can't beat this place and the lovely staff always willing to assist and explain the interesting variety of bread.
Their cakes are terrific as well.
My favourite loaf is THE BAVARIAN.

As a kid who grew up eating brown bread this bakery is better than the bread we ate! The brown rye is chewy with a strong sourdough flavour, as it should be. I have also had the denser rye which is excellent too, but can be too dense for some. The polish donuts (the round jam filled ones) are better than the ones I ate as a kid at the polish club in perth, they just melt in your mouth. The cherry pastry is wonderful too, tart, rather than sweet. The apple and sultana pastry is somewhat heavy but I enjoyed it. It is not the place for those on diets but it is very authentic.

Out of this world!. DELICIOUS!!! The hazelnut slice was so delicate and full of flavour... Kind of glad I live on the other side of town, because I'd be eating there ALL THE TIME and I'm supposed to stay away from dairy and gluten.. Oh wow.

Best bread in Balacalava or maybe Melbourne. I made the lady behind the counter laugh once, and I am proud of that. I've tried since and failed miserably.

As other reviewers have noted, the service here is part of its unique charm. I'd not bothered shopping here because the name reeked of trying too hard, but don't be mistaken, this place is old school eastern European baking at its finest.

And it's open on Saturdays, when our only other option is Baker's Delight, which is never an option at all.

Braving the brisk service at Baker in the Rye is well worth it.

Eastern European Charm makes it all worthwhile!!. Such delicious bread and invariably entertaining to engage with the staff. I stood in there yesterday with about 10 other people, and there was barely enough room to view the treats behind the counter.

One of the older staff members stood there with her hands on her hips, empty plastic bag, ready for action and staring us all down. She then cut through the silence by yelling "who wants something?!?!" At which point a few of us quivered with fright.

And the first bite into my Borodinsky Rye made it all worthwhile!

Great Challah, beautiful breads, and frankly, I much prefer the acerbic charm of the staff there than the thinly veiled charm at some of the over priced snobbier bakeries.

The soup nazi experience. I love how the rude service is part of the fun of shopping here. Love the bread and love the rudeness. It's part of the experience just flow with it. I'm very close to trying to order like Elain Benice and get banned for one year... Love it!

Cherry piroshki. Oh my god, I have to stop going there on a Saturday. I end up buying a fried morsel of heaven every time - the cherry piroshki (morello cherry doughnuts, essentially) are to die for!!

Some things improve.... I have noticed that the horrible blonde sales lady with the sour expression no longer works here, what a relief! Every few days we buy a loaf of the Pumpernickel and something else - at the moment the Polanga Rye is on the hot list. Haven't tried the spelt bread yet, but will get to it. Lovely neighbourhood bakery that remains our unexlpoited secret!

Amazing bread, friendly staff! I don't know what all of the other reviewers are talking about. The lady that served me was lovely. I didn't stay for coffee, though. Only bought bread. My friend went in there the other day and also reported that the staff were polite and helpful. Perhaps we were both served by the one nice person?

Not everything that's AMAZING in life needs to be delivered with a fake smile!. Ignore the bad reviews from people who just don't get it! And to the "people who just don't get it", I'd suggest going directly over the road to Bakers Delight. You'll get the fake smiles and cheap nasty bread you deserve!

If you are a fan of rye bread, this is the place to get it - great quality, great value, and great for you. And my favourite part is the experience of shopping there - no mucking around is allowed, choose your bread or cakes quickly, or you might not get anything at all! I always feel like I've had a mini adventure in russia, with my bread as a tasty souvenir!

Gruff ladies in the Rye. It always makes me laugh when I hear the complaints about the gruff manner of the ladies at Baker in the Rye. Sure, they can be a surly lot, but it's just part of the experience.
The rye bread is brilliant and it's great when they make sour cherry donuts on a Saturday, but this seems to be only at special times. Highly recommended.

I have shopped here for years and I don't find it gets any more friendly, so if you can't handle the heat, it's back to Brumbys for you.

Coming Through The Rye. If your notion of good bread goes beyond Wonder White, then sample the Bavarian rye bread at Baker in the Rye.

It's a German style dark rye sourdough, and whilst the bread has some substance about it, it's not excessively heavy. I find the crunchy crust and soft interior all works a treat.

As noted by other reviewers, the Russian ladies serving don't always come across as particularly friendly, however I've found that after a few visits their manner changes, and you'll be greeted like an old friend.

Delicious!. I buy a cheese danish every day on the way to the train, and I have to say, they're the best in Melbourne by far. I also get the challah on Fridays, and it's so sweet, fluffy and soft that there's never any left for Saturday lunch!

AMAZING bakery. Their eggloaf makes the best french toast in the WORLD, and their traditional ryes are delicious, and healthy - i discovered them by eating bread at Las Chicas cafe on carlisle first... but why pay $4.50 for two slices when they charge $4.00 / loaf instore!!! philippa's seems like a fraud next to these guys!

We absolutely destroyed this zebra cake. Dense, moist and tasty as fffudge. The lovely person there recommended it, as my daughter said she really wanted a chocolate cake. They nailed that recommendation harder than I nailed your dad. 11/10

Go there mostly for their yeast-free Borodinsky rye and probiotic drinks (kefir and ryazhanka). They have great choice of good bread, but no gluten-free options. Tried some kind of a pastry/pie with cheese (ricotta or cottage) and cherry. Mmmmmmm, so delicious! They also have some good Russian and Polish sweets. And kvas made in Ukraine. P.S. Ryazhanka needs to be shaken very well before consuming.

Beautiful authentic east euro bakery. Sour 🍒 cherry cream layer cake and savory peroshki are homemade. Rye bread is light and not too heavy but full of flavor and grain.
