Review Marty's Fish Shop - Ballarat

What fish and drink pack has no chips?? Never in my life! I feel kind of ripped off. Chips wasn't listed, but isn't that a given? It's a fish&chip shop. That was more expensive than I expected, and look at the colour? It's old oil and over cooked. Asked for chicken salt and vinegar, twice, and didn't get either of them.

We regularly buy our fish and chips at Marty's for their gluten free option. My husband and children have traditional fish and chips and sometimes the quality has been lower than other times. So it can be a bit random. But I have always been happy with my gluten free order. It is just nice to be able to have them! The order has never been mixed up, service is good and the prices are competitive. Give them a go!

New management is doing well. The Gluten free menu is strong and delicious. The potato cakes were big, the battered meat balls and homemade chicken nuggets tasty and I had no gluten related issues after. Very Pleased

The only reason they get even 1 star is because of the gluten free options. However every time I’ve been here the food is literally black it’s that burnt!! After waiting so long as well, why not take it out when it’s cooked so I wait half the time and my food isn’t burnt. Would rather go somewhere else and deal with the stomach ache from gluten than go here and pay so much for inedible charcoal food. Have observed them being rude to other customers in store and when I’ve called to order at times they couldn’t even understand me. Won’t be back

Excellent fish and chips, and having separate preparation and cooking for GF makes this the only F&C place my coeliac wife can eat. It just seems that every time we visit the service is chaotic. We phone ahead and turn up 5 minutes later than quoted and still sit waiting for 10-15 minutes.

Gluten free range is fantastic and only 30c more than the regular menu. Local owners rather friendly and new their craft well, but got the impression they were low on business (7pm Saturday night).

Gluten free is a big bonus for a few of my family members, and they say it's nice. I like the Butter Fish (Hake) with traditional batter, although I do find the batter a bit heavy and gluggy. I saw a remark the new owners are looking to make it more like a tempura, but it's not there yet. The pineapple fritters with cinnamon are a big treat to top things off. Communicating with the Chinese lady at the counter can be a bit difficult, but I think staff watch for difficulties and step in to help on occasion :-) It's the best fish & chips we've found in four months of looking in Ballarat.

On average the quality of the food is terrific, but lately the level of service is poor. Firstly having your order correctly understood and not lost in translation, Secondly having half your order ready sitting under the light (I'm sure they are not heat lamps?) for several minutes, Thirdly when I get home with my order and find the wrong item or multiple items I've paid for but didn't order, Fourthly the TV and the exhaust fans combined make it hard to hear when your order number is called out - so consequently your order sits under those "heat lamps" a while longer! Lastly the overall cleaniness of the store has really deteriorated of recent -The white walls aren't white no more! At times the tiled floor is sticky underfoot! Staff wearing dirty clothing is not a good look for any buisness!
