Wonderful food, and the staff are so friendly and helpful. One of our very favourite restaurants. The butter chicken in particular is incredible, and the chilli baby corn.

I was lucky enough to dine as a guest of Avatar on Friday night and loved the elegant setting. We kicked off with a yummy mango lassi which wasn’t as thick as I’ve generally had before and therefore super drinkable, I was on to my second before I knew it!
We ordered the chicken tikka and tandoori prawns for entree. The chicken tikka wasn’t as bold in flavour as I was expecting but I enjoyed it with the sauces we found on the table (mint and a tamarind). The tandoori prawns had a vibrant colour to them and went well with a side of raita.
For mains we had to go for a butter chicken but also tried the recommended eggplant with coconut and peanuts dish. Each dish can be customised to your level of heat, on this one we went spicier as my dining companion wanted to spice up his life. This is where my second lassi came in handy as it was too hot for me but I kept on eating as I was thoroughly enjoying it nonetheless.
The butter chicken was also right up my alley a nice sweet rendition and I was very pleased to taste a decent amount of garlic in the garlic naan. I am sick to death of restaurants serving garlic naans devoid of garlic. We also tried the laccha paratha one of my favourite flakey breads that you don’t find in many places. I definitely recommend ordering one or two of these.
To finish we had some pistachio kulfi which was a nice light way to end the meal. Extremely friendly service and delicious food
We were super excited to be invited into Avatar Indian in Balwyn to try out their dinner menu. Open for just over two year the interiors look fresh and sophisticated. It’s the perfect setting for some good quality Indian food which we encountered tonight.
We both started with a mango lassi which we saw being freshly made.
For entrees we had the Jhinga Gulnaar (Tandoor Prawns) and the Malai Chicken Tikka. We love loved loved the prawn entree which had a good spice level and tender prawns. The Malai Chicken Tikka was a different Tikka to what we were expecting (guess what we were expecting was the other non Malai Tikka that’s was also on the menu). This version was a chicken marinated in cheese, yogurt, lime, and coriander. It was lovely and tender and quite a subtle spice and taste. The melted cheese was something I hadn’t not had before and who doesn’t like melty cheese.
For mains we ordered butter chicken and a eggplant, coconut, peanut and sesame dish called Bagare Baingan which we asked for medium spiced. We had garlic naan and a buttery layers wholemeal bread along with jasmine rice. The butter chicken was very good. It was nice a creamy and sweet while the Bagare Baingan did pack a spicy punch and was deliciously smooth flavoured. I’m was really impressed by this eggplant dish. When done well eggplant is a stunning vegetable (so I’m learning).
We were so full but had just enough room for a shared dessert of saffron pistachio ice cream, a nice way to finish the meal.
Some familiar and less familiar dishes tried tonight and I really enjoyed trying them out. Thanks so much for having us.
I can always be confident to have a good meal here. Very accomodating staff that can fit us in even on an extremely busy night. I recommend the tandoori platter, butter chicken, any of the goat curries and the pistachio ice cream.
I had the butter chicken & was the best I ever had. The food was tasty & delicious in general. The service was good & fast & enjoyed the ambiance.
I will go back again :)
