Impressive, delightful and extraordinary are just some of the words that come to mind when thinking about White Mojo.
From the moment we stepped into the bright and spacious café, we knew it would be no ordinary visit. Welcomed immediately by a worker carrying a heavy load of stock who held the door open for us, we were then greeted by a bubbly and friendly waitress who showed us to our table.
Looking around, we took in our surroundings and immediately felt at home. The Scandinavian-style décor, along with the hanging plants and smiling staff created a comforting and stylish atmosphere.
Not long after placing our orders, the employee who held the door open for us came over and introduced himself as Jia, the manager and head barista of the establishment. Jia was one of the most friendly and enthusiastic workers we’ve ever had the pleasure of meeting. His passion was so clear in the way he spoke of the establishment, menu, food and especially the drinks, which he turns into an art-form- but we’ll get to that!
First up, as always, we ordered two juices- The ‘Summer Lovin’ with apple, pineapple, lemon and mint, and the ‘Garden Green’ with apple, celery, cucumber, spinach and kale. Both juices were light and refreshing, and weren’t overbearingly sweet like so many juices can be. We were then treated to a matcha latte and the black latte, a Melbourne trend made famous by White Mojo and the barista himself when the establishment opened in June last year. Made with a blend of peanuts, almonds, black sesame and a few secret ingredients, the black latte has never really hit the spot for us…until now. Smooth, creamy and surprisingly sweet, the latte was absolutely delicious! We were hesitant to ruin Jia’s beautiful latte artistry, but it was worth it for the almost decadent experience that awaited us. The matcha was equally creamy and tasty, but the black latte was an absolute game changer and an instant favourite.
The award winner:
In April, The Weekly Review held an awards night, where White Mojo’s ‘Double cheese chili scrambled egg’ dish won the ‘Must eat’ meal award of 2017. One half of our team had the pleasure of trying out the dish earlier in the year at the city location, but we were both pretty keen to try it out again. Served with parmesan and cheddar, smoked belly bacon, chilli mayo and toasted sweet corn in an ink brioche bun, this dish is one of the creamiest and tastiest breakfast we’ve ever had. Exploding with flavour from the chilli mayo, the combination of creamy cheese, toasted kernels and the thick-cut smokey bacon made for a mouth-watering experience that would make other chilli scrambled on the market envious.
The waffle:
The insta-famous sweet and sour waffle was next! Served with nutella frosting, lemon curd, strawberry gel, macerated raspberry, toasted lemon meringue, fresh and freeze dried fruit, mango sorbet, waffle cone and buttery waffle, this was one of the most satisfyingly sweet dishes we’ve tried. The variety of textures and flavours created a unique tangy explosion that left us wanting more. There was no denying it- this was pure dessert for breakfast (and on a Wednesday)…yet, we had absolutely no regrets!
Just as we thought our bellies were going to give way, Jia approached us and asked if he could serve us one more dessert- the French Brioche Toast, which was only served at the Balwyn location. How could we resist such an offer?!
Spongey thick-cut brioche with a dollop of espresso cream cheese, mixed berry compote, freeze dried and fresh fruit, white chocolate crumb and salted caramel sauce. Oh. Mah. Lawwwwwd! This dish balanced sweet and salty like an absolute champ and even though our belt buckles were struggling, the combination of flavours was worth every delicious mouthful.
Our experience at White Mojo was just that- an experience. From the outstanding service, to each mouth-watering bite of food we had, it was up there with one of the most incredible dining experiences we’ve had the pleasure of being part of.
Jia’s passion and humility was evident in the way he spoke of his artistry, the food and the establishment as a whole. Our waitress, Leah, was so bubbly and friendly that we could’ve known her for years, and all of the workers we came across during our time at White Mojo were similar in demeanour. The drinks, food, atmosphere and service all went well above and beyond our expectations.
White Mojo- what can we say? We’re in love.
