Got an $8 bento box from here today. It’s available all day and there are eight options to choose from, which is quite a good variety. Ended up opting for Box A which comprises of curry chicken, a steamed mince pork patty and some cabbage with rice as well as a seaweed soup. Not a bad deal as the portion size is definitely enough, but the taste was not that memorable because the food seemed to have been pre-cooked in bulk. I’d say it’s value for money, but if you’re looking for quality over quantity then this isn’t for you. Haven’t tried any of their other dishes before so I can’t judge the entire restaurant based on this one visit - will order something from their regular menu next time.
Been there a few times. Highlights for me were KamHeong Chicken, KangKong, Sambal Veg, Yam Ring, HotPlate(Japanese) Tofu. They seem to be better with the sharing dishes than the individual type dishes (Fried rice, CharKwayToew etc..).
Super friendly service, we loved the homemade tofu!!! The zomato gold 1+1 was really easy to use as well. I also enjoyed the char kuey teow. The salted egg yolk dishes were tasty too. Good flavours and dishes came out quickly as well.
This place is always busy on the weekend so was happy to finally try it today! 😋😋
Taste 3.5/5
The classic char kway teow as a staple Malaysian dish was tasty but a little soggy and lacking the wok taste but still good. Wontons were super and fresh.
The Mongolian beef was a little too starchy and salty but would have gone better with rice as opposed to noodles
Deco and staff 5/5
As a casual restaurant the place is great and staff were quick to help and polite!

Kam Heong Clams & Salted Egg Chicken very yummy! Same taste as back home
We arrived at 6:30 Friday night without a reservation and the restaurant was already full of local Malaysian families, which was a good sign. The place was a little loud as expected so not an ideal date spot but it was still easy to hold a conversation.
Design: Interior decour of the restaurant was no frills but well presented, with exposed brick walls and comfortable padded seats. There were the standard seat configurations of 2 and 4 as well as three large tables for groups of 8 or more. The Malaysian paintings on the walls and Buddha guarding the door added a touch of class and authenticity.
Food: We ordered the Wonton Noodle Soup and the Curry Laksa (both $15). Service was brisk and we received our food in about 15 minutes despite it being a busy night. The portions were huge so the fact they gave takeaway containers (FOR FREE) was a huge boon. The Curry Laksa broth packed the usual heat that I love, though disappointingly there were no prawns or fishcake in the dish. The chicken was also very dry and tasted like it was precooked. Two varieties of noodles, bean sprouts and tofu were also included as per usual. On the other hand, the Wonton Noodles were fantastic with flavourful broth, fresh Bok Choy and crispy noodles that melted in my mouth. I also counted six very generously sized wontons filled with pork.
Plenty of parking available on either Doncaster Rd or the side streets at the back of the restaurant. If all else fails you can always park at Aldi next door. All in all I would definitely visit again but make sure you book on a weekend.
Enjoyed all the dishes. Tasty and flavoursome
Very friendly wait staff.
Went to restaurant tonight and ordered most of the food recommended here on Zomato. I like the fish head curry - think I would buy a takeaway of this dish and bring it home. The curry will definitely goes very well with some noodles added to the curry. Also ordered the crispy pork shoulder - the sauce that comes with it brings out the taste of the pork. Wanted to order the yam basket but they already run out of it. Next time should pre-ordered this dish when u do the table booking. Food came out quite quickly and service was good. They honoured the Zomato Gold 1+1. Would go back again for lunch one day and try their noodles.
Great food and reasonable priced. The restaurant is getting busier especially on weekend so remember to make reservation to avoid disappointment.
A new gem in Balwyn!
What used to be a tired and half-baked dining experience with the previous management, is now a vibrant and full-house weekender
First found them on Zomato Gold and from the pictures attached, you can tell that portions haven’t been skimped. Delectable dishes and hearty wok-hei flavour that any local Malaysian would recognise. Authentic dishes and well-worth visit after visit with your membership.
Their dinner a-la-carte dishes were wonderful too, especially their homemade signature tofu dish. Remember to book ahead if you don’t want to be disappointed on a weekend.
Five stars!
Great food. Excellent service. Very authentic Malaysian food..........................................
Highly recommended. Authentic and would return to try other varieties. No fuss honouring the promotion.9
Really enjoyed the food and honest recommendation of food. Service was slow as there was a lot of people. But overall, great food and will definitely be back.
Pleasantly surprised by the quality of the food. Very authentic Malaysia food. Our best favours are Japanese tofu on hotplate, Marmite pork ribs, curry fish head and yam ring with cashew nut chicken. We will be the regular. We live nearby, good for locals.
Tried the char kway teow and Penang mee goreng. Both were yummy, but if i had to choose one, I'd order the latter. The wontan hor seemed like a hot favourite too with praises coming from friends who had it. Service was prompt and polite, and best of all, they were very generous with the sambal chilli!
Love their foods and the politeness of their stuff. Price are reasonable. 👍👍
Came on a Friday night where it was quite quiet - 3-4 tables filled out of ~15-20 tables. Staff were very friendly. Food portions were small, definitely helped that we ordered one extra noodle dish to fill us up!
I love eating Asian fusion and this place has some tasty and unique dishes with its own character. Interior is very relaxing and the owner couple is kind and friendly. Ive bookmarked this place for the future.
Very authentic Malaysian cuisine! The ambience was very good as well. How could I missed this place until now! Definitely will be back to try other dishes. Hope it wont be lost until my next visit! Will bring all my friends with me next time.
I’ve been here a couple of times but I never left a review. I think it’s about time that I do because they deserve it. I usually get the red curry duck and other stuff depending on how I feel. Everything is cooked with an authentic asian flavour and they have really friendly service. The waitress always greets us with a smile and regularly stocks up our water. Highly recommend for any occasion
nice food and good services, enjoy the atmosphere there, Also we have a good conversation with the owner, he told us they have honored as the recipient of "Top 7" awards by Asian Star TV in "the Best Asian Food in Australia" competition.
the best restaurant I've ever try in Melbourne! highly recommend JAVANESE EYE FILLET and GRILLIED DUCK RED CURRY. also the entree SUNG CHIT BOW is amazing, I love that sauce💕the price is reasonable, two entree, two main courses, one rice cost about70+dollars total. we also make the reservation for the next week, bcz we want try the banquets👏👏see my next review when I try again.
the food is so delicious!!! the red curry duck, butter prawns, and assam fish are amazing there!!! we also order the black rice for the dessert, the taste is sooooo good!! and the services is wonderful!! we have a lovely night in the Kunyit restaurant. we must will come back later!
KUNYIT IS CELEBRATING THEIR 8th YEAR OF OPENING! Share this message to your friends and book your table now to get 10% off your bill! This special occasion will only last until 11/8/2018. Hope we see you soon at Kunyit!
This place is definitely worth going with your family, their food taste great and has nice decor too. I especially love their Asam fish and their Butter prawn, it is definitely worth trying out!
Thai food has special taste because they use special condiment. Not a lot of people like to try it, but Kunyit's food is tasty:) The price was very reasonable.
Had a great meal here with my girlfriend! Very delicious - the roast duck curry was very special and unique! A bit pricey than usual for asian cuisine but the duck definitely made up for it!
Very clean and spacious dining room with great decor and the chopsticks, holders and bowls were esquisite! Great atmosphere - a shame that there werent as many customers around. Empty on a Tuesday night but we didnt mind - deserves more business; very unique and special experience.
Delicious and quality food! The signature duck was a highlight, following by the coconut rice and the roti. Good environment as well. Amazing
This is our favourite local restaurant.... we come here at least once a month and the food is amazing. So yummy and value for money .... The staff is so friendly .... 10/10 ...
you won't be disappointed 👍🏻👌😍yum yum
Try the entree filo .....
Coming to Kunyit was one of my best dining experiences as the Asian food was delicious and the service was good, the waitresses were kind and very welcoming. I highly suggest coming to Kunyit for a great Asian dining experience
Always great food! Best asian food in the area, great space and atmosphere. Tom yum soup, the quail, mee goreng all fantastic! Highly recommend to anyone looking for an enjoyable feed
2016 Enjoyed our evening, all 4 dining thought our choices of food were excellant.Rest. spacious, quiet ,with good service.Had dined here previously ×2 ,service had improved since last visit .
Duck salad still to die for. Red curry prawns amazing. Great food. Our old fave still has it. The food here never disappoints. Give this place a try or retry it's worth it.
The restaurant space feels good. It is nicely located and laid out. Surprisingly so. The service is calm and moderately efficient. The food is mid range and occasionally just above. There's nothing in what we had out of a number of standards including pad Thai, steak and black bean sauce, etc that reaches above average heights. If anything, the place is rather confused about the style it's serving. It's neither Chinese, Thai or anything else. It's a confusing blend at best. Neither is it cheap, quite the opposite. But, it filled the spot at a family event on a mild Thursday night.
Pros:
+ Good ambience
+ Good food
+ Quiet place so can have good chat with friends
+ Spacious
Cons:
- Limited choices of food
- A bit pricey
It was a lovely night for Valentine's Day with my beautiful wife. We had the banquet and the food was amazing. Very tasty. The san chow bow was my personal favourite.
This restaurant is the best.Been there only once but really want to go back. Service A+,food A+++++ ,price A+best Asian food you can ever find.Sensational!
Great service, great atmosphere and convenient location off the freeway.
Came here on a whim, and very glad we did!
Great curries that look deceivingly small, but we're impossible to finish as much as we wanted to. Would recommend to a friend in a heartbeat!
BYOB and BYOW according to the sign, wish we knew!
We have been going to Kunyit on and off for years. The food had always been very good and the service just a bit too slow. With the change of ownership we felt that the quality of food went downhill (but was still quite good).
However, we went there last night and were very impressed. The service was attentive (although it has to be said they were not very busy) but not over bearing or slow. The food was all excellent. We had the red currey duck (of course as its their unofficial signature dish), pad thai, singapore noodles and pad grapow beef. There were 5 of us and it cost about $115 including corkage. Excellent.
Fabulous food. Lovely owners Mary and Wu. Come along in October there is no corkage charge. Must try the red duck curry, duck salad or Javanese steak. YUMMY
GREAT FOOD The food in kuny.... GREAT FOOD
The food in kunyit is fantastic, the place is so good. All dishes were fresh and full of flavor .highly recommended
Great place amazing food , had the sun choi bow TL start was amazing , then for main had the green curry , this has to be the best and I mean BEST green curry I have ever had , fantastic place would highly recommend.
Hit and Miss. Food is always great. Service...not so much.
Once we waited 2 hours for our food. Another time had the best service imaginable! Take away is a priority here rather than eat in customers. Need to work on that.
Excellent!. Went last night and had the $39 banquet (min 2 people). Amazing food full of flavour, even the green curry which I'm not usually a big fan off. Chicken satay was very tasty. Service was very good and food prompt and brought out at a rate that allowed us to eat at our own pace and get cold.
Will be back!
Great food & experience. Food was excellent, generous serves which were great to share, and a nice, relaxed pace so we could really enjoy the meal and our company!
Balwyn Treasure. As a long time customer through two changes of ownership, this restaurant is a consistent gem. My favourite is the red curry of duck closely followed by green prawn curry, but it is hard to make a mistake with any menu selection. Service can be slow, because this place is always busy. It is BYOW and generally a Pinot Gris, Chardonnay, or Riesling will match most selections. Well worth a visit and takeaway is offered if you can't get a booking.
YUUUMMMM. Could not recommend the butter prawns, the nasi goreng, and the duck with asian greens enough! The Chicken in plum sauce is also a huge favourite!
I do however, recommend going earlier in the evening as service is much better. If you usually dine around 7:30, try going at 6:30 instead.
Went for dinner with a friend. It's a little gem in Balwyn. Food was great , ambience was great and love the decor of the place
Good food. Great service and great food, the curry was really good. Serving size could've been a bit bigger (green chicken curry) but overall I would recommend it
Delicious food. Have visited the restaurant many times and LOVE the food!
Love this place. Great tasty food amazing curry!!! This place is well priced for what you get. If your are in the area it's a must!
Style Dining. A very good restaurant with excellent food. Reasonably priced. Good service. I have eaten here many times & would have no hesitation in recommending this restaurant.
Agreed -- The Red Curry Rocked. I went for dinner here on the weekend and was extremely pleased with the service and the meal. Definitely the best Malaysian food in the eastern suburbs, and a lot less expensive than a lot of the places in Balywn and Camberwell these days. I can't recommend it highly enough!
Very impressed. Had the banquet for 14 people. Cannot fault the food or the service. Catered for dietary restrictions without fuss. Will definitely go back. Recommended.
Father's Day 2011. My family took me to Kunyit for Father's Day dinner (last night). We had a range of dishes and they were all very good. Particular favorites were the prawns in green curry, braised duck and the swimmer crab and chicken rolls (an entree). The service was very good and the prices were reasonable for the quality. We live locally and will be back.
Superb. Regular diner at this restaurant & have always been impressed with the great food. Always busy on weekends & service will become somewhat slow, but great restaurnats always are.
What a fantastic place. Awesome food great service. Spring rolls were the best.
The food is absolutely nice.. The staffs are really friendly... Im amazed to find a really nice decent restaurant in the middle of a quiet suburb! Bravo!!
Thank you Urbanspoon for finding Kunyit for me! We had family take away from here last night & it was MAGNIFICENT! Peppery vege spring rolls, smokey, slightly sweet, fat, juicy & authentic chicken satay, spicy kari ayam with huge pieces of chicken, delicious Thai beef stir fry with pepper & garlic....best we've had for years. The place was packed & filled with the loud buzz of happy diners. Great value, good sized meals means I'm eating delicious left overs for lunch today :)
Food Addict. I wish all Asian restaurant can serve delicious food like Kunyit. Excellent menu selection, good size servings and well priced. It goes to show you don't need to visit some higly over rated top restaurants to get good food.
Quality food, friendly service, and nice atmosphere. My wife and I had the Sunday Hawker style lunch.
Nasi Lemak was nice, with the highlight being the ikan bilis with sambal - simply sublime. The chicken curry was good quality without being spectacular, and I'm sure it said beef rendang on the menu! Vegetables with satay sauce was a nice touch as an accompaniment.
The Laksa soup was delicious although a bit light on for ingredients.
I hear the char kueh teow is good and will probably try that next time.
A great little find in the suburbs. Fantastic food, great atmosphere and always busy. Recommend you book well in advance. Chicken green curry is amazing and takeaway is fabulous.
Really good. Good quality, nice food and great value.
Excellent food (but watch out for the quail and heaters). Most of the dishes here are very tasty and delicious. Favourites so far are the Char Kway Teow, Yuen Yeong Mai (lunch only), Chicken Satay, Prawns on batter and the Ayam Panggang Kunyit (grilled chicken). In fact, you could pick anything at random from the menu and it will probably taste great. For dessert, the Sago gula melaka is excellent and so is the signature Durian icecream.
For kids there are 2 caveats. The fried Quail is heavily marinated with wine, so much so that our 2 and a half year old was drunk by the end of the meal (it was all he had). And if your children have eczema, avoid dinner as they turn up the heaters on full blast. The boss / maitre d' refused to turn off the one pointed at our table, on the basis that the corridor that leads to the kitchen / toilet would "get cold". He capitulated on our third plea for mercy, but pulled a long face. This was the only blemish on our experience over 5 or so visits so far.
Had the CnY dinner menu last Saturday with a group of friends (13 ppl in total). Paid $70 per head. I think it was overpriced. I barely ate $70 worth of food. The dishes were quite salty. Vegetable dishes had lil pieces of meat/porc in there. Was hoping the veg dishes would only have vegetables in there as there were already a lot of meat dishes on the menu . Repeated ingredients in some dishes. Service was ok. Food presentation was great but as the adage goes “the proof is in the pudding” .
On another note, the dishes you see on the photos did taste ok- good .
We had double lobster and noodles, fried Japanese tofu with minced pork, and fried barramundi for dinner last night. Amazing cooking, really enjoyed all the dishes (especially the lobster)!
The food is good and authentic. But the restaurant need to renovate to be more attractive. It take a while to wait for the food to be served due to lots of online take away order.
Great Chinese New year Eve dinner with a special menu. Very impressive for a great value of $688. Everyone is happy.
Great food!! 😋 love their Singapore style hokkien noodle !
I have been here a few times now and I must say it has been quite consistently delicious. They have a very authentic version of the yam ring (which is one of my top 5 final dishes to have if I was on death row). Alas, on this Friday night, they had run out so I had to put up with their fish head curry, marmite pork ribs and salted egg prawns instead. All of which were super impressive!
The chunky meaty pieces of deep fried fish head made my head spin. The curry broth was tingle worthy while the marmite pork ribs brought back warm childhood memories. The prawns were fresh and huge - loved the seasoning. The food was mildly on the salty side but nothing a bowl of rice couldn’t rectify.
I definitely will be back for my yam ring fix, which I now know should be pre-ordered. Nothing will come between me and my yam ring ever again!☀️
We often forget to come here but when we do we are always so happy with our dishes. The food is always so delicious and my girls who are quite fussy with food always enjoy their meals from Malaysian Station, highly recommend if your after Chinese/ Malaysian food!
