Review Kunyit - Balwyn

Karen S
Had the CnY dinner menu last Saturday with a group of friends (13 ppl in total). Paid $70 per head. I think it was overpriced. I barely ate $70 worth of food. The dishes were quite salty. Vegetable dishes had lil pieces of meat/porc in there. Was hoping the veg dishes would only have vegetables in there as there were already a lot of meat dishes on the menu . Repeated ingredients in some dishes. Service was ok. Food presentation was great but as the adage goes “the proof is in the pudding” . On another note, the dishes you see on the photos did taste ok- good .

We had double lobster and noodles, fried Japanese tofu with minced pork, and fried barramundi for dinner last night. Amazing cooking, really enjoyed all the dishes (especially the lobster)!

The food is good and authentic. But the restaurant need to renovate to be more attractive. It take a while to wait for the food to be served due to lots of online take away order.

Great Chinese New year Eve dinner with a special menu. Very impressive for a great value of $688. Everyone is happy.

I have been here a few times now and I must say it has been quite consistently delicious. They have a very authentic version of the yam ring (which is one of my top 5 final dishes to have if I was on death row). Alas, on this Friday night, they had run out so I had to put up with their fish head curry, marmite pork ribs and salted egg prawns instead. All of which were super impressive! The chunky meaty pieces of deep fried fish head made my head spin. The curry broth was tingle worthy while the marmite pork ribs brought back warm childhood memories. The prawns were fresh and huge - loved the seasoning. The food was mildly on the salty side but nothing a bowl of rice couldn’t rectify. I definitely will be back for my yam ring fix, which I now know should be pre-ordered. Nothing will come between me and my yam ring ever again!☀️

We often forget to come here but when we do we are always so happy with our dishes. The food is always so delicious and my girls who are quite fussy with food always enjoy their meals from Malaysian Station, highly recommend if your after Chinese/ Malaysian food!

Food overall was good - better than your average Chinese take away quality that you can get most places - and generous serve and tasty. For a Malaysian restaurant would more interesting with dishes like beef rendang on the menu and less of just standard Chinese dishes like the old beef and black bean. The big tables are far too high for anyone under 6 foot tall and front door wouldn't close on a cold night so bring a jacket if you want to eat there. Service was ok but served dish with pork where it was specifically requested without but taken back with no fuss and replaced - great take away option but probably avoid dining in.

Got an $8 bento box from here today. It’s available all day and there are eight options to choose from, which is quite a good variety. Ended up opting for Box A which comprises of curry chicken, a steamed mince pork patty and some cabbage with rice as well as a seaweed soup. Not a bad deal as the portion size is definitely enough, but the taste was not that memorable because the food seemed to have been pre-cooked in bulk. I’d say it’s value for money, but if you’re looking for quality over quantity then this isn’t for you. Haven’t tried any of their other dishes before so I can’t judge the entire restaurant based on this one visit - will order something from their regular menu next time.

It took 1 and a half hours to serve a one simple stir fry, steamed rice, one curry dish, one serve of spring rolls and dumplings - I have never had slower and more arrogant service, given the whole experience this place is now the winner of the worst restaurant experience we have ever had! I don’t recommend! The food taste was below average and prices were high for the food they prepared! In a big city like ours with soo many dining out choices this is not acceptable.

What a rip off. They advertised their fish head noodles lunch specials at 50% but decided to charge extra for the dry fish head egg noodles dish without informing me up front. In fact during ordering, they told me it was on 50% discount. I only found out after I paid the bill and asked for the receipt (and they did not even have the courtesy to mention that they did not give me the full 50% discount until I questioned the bill) and they said that it was under management's orders as egg noodles are expensive. I decided not to make a scene and raised a complaint on their FB page but I was told that I was not overcharged as I 'consented' to the price. Unbelievably arrogant response. So it's ok to advertise a deal and not honour it? Looks like the joke is on me and I should have made a scene while paying. Lesson learnt, I'm never visiting this place again.

Been there a few times. Highlights for me were KamHeong Chicken, KangKong, Sambal Veg, Yam Ring, HotPlate(Japanese) Tofu. They seem to be better with the sharing dishes than the individual type dishes (Fried rice, CharKwayToew etc..).

This is a pretty long and detailed review, and if you decide to read through the whole thing please note the reason why is due to the terrible experience I had at Malaysia Station and my only hope that this review will help some other poor folk out there make an informed decision about eating here. The only reason why I rated this restaurant one star is because that is the lowest possible rating you can give a restaurant on Zomato. We had the unfortunate experience of trying their Chinese New Year banquet meal last Friday evening. For those that are unfamiliar with CNY celebrations, the reunion dinner is a tradition where everyone gathers for a big festive meal to celebrate and look forward to the start of the new year. There are certain dishes you eat, meant to symbolise good luck/abundance/happiness for the year ahead. The dishes normally use more expensive/premium ingredients given it’s a once a year celebration and Chinese believe spending a bit extra is worth it to eat well as a good sign for the new year. We booked the standard banquet package, $388 for 6 mains and two desserts meant for 8-10 people. Our group was for 10 people. Definitely not the most expensive meal ever, but still, at roughly $38-$40 per person for a suburban Chinese restaurant it is considered high where generally ~$30 / head is the ballpark cost. And for that price you should definitely be full. There were two seatings, 6-8pm and 8-10pm. We were in for the early session, and the place was full with big groups of people all out to celebrate like us.
What proceeded next was definitely one of the worst Chinese meals I have ever had, let alone for a CNY celebration. First up was the Yu Sheng/Lo Hei. This is a must have entrée CNY dish for Singaporean/Malaysians, traditionally sashimi mixed with pickles, crunchy crackers, salad topped various sweet and sour sauces and seasoning. What we got was a bunch of store brought pickles (you can get yu sheng sets in Asian supermarkets where you just add in raw fish), with some pomelo flesh scattered in. When we asked if there was sashimi in it, their reply was it was a ‘rainbow’ vegetarian version. WTF? The name of the dish literally translates as ‘Raw Fish’ or sashimi. Nowhere on the menu did it say it was vegetarian. It was over sweet and tasted as fake as it looked with all the artificial colouring. Though I am not a fan of the dish to begin with, half our table was Malaysian/Singaporean and even they didn’t like it. Not off to a good start, but we asked for the rest of the dishes to be served as they cleared away the plate. Not sure what happened in the kitchen next, they either lost our order or were overwhelmed with the crowd and crumbled under pressure. We waited more than 45 mins after the first dish but still nothing arrived. The owners could tell we were getting agitated and gave us a packet of prawn crackers to try keep us from complaining. We were not the only ones effected, a smaller table next to us consisting of a family and kids had a heated conversation with the waiters before getting up and leaving. By then it was already 7:30pm and we were wondering how we were supposed to give them back their table at 8pm for the subsequent booking. Finally after close to an hr waiting, we finally got the rest of our dishes. The salted free range chicken tasted ok, but was over cooked. CNY chicken traditionally is a whole cooked chicken, with the flesh moist and tender, but ours was dry with some sort of ginger sauce poured over it which for me ruined the natural flavour of the chicken. The deep fried barramundi was a tiny. I don’t know if they suddenly thought they were some Michellin starred degustation restaurant where you have a bite sized portion on a massive plate, but the whole fish was so small it actually looked embarrassing. Come on, barras are not expensive, premium fishes and are readily available. Honestly it no larger than a small/medium sized fish you can buy from a fishmonger. We literally got a mouthful each. Taste was average and covered in some sweet thai chilli sauce. When seafood is fresh you steam to savour the natural flavour of the produce, if it’s frozen you fry it to mask the fishiness and topping it with a strong sauce certainly helps as well. The prawns were probably the highlight of the dinner, fried prawn cutlets covered in a salted egg sauce. The prawns were cooked pretty well and the salted egg sauce was ok and not too salty. Not the best version of this dish I have tried, but in the context of the dinner I enjoyed them. However, the Buddha’s Delight was absolutely laughable. Most CNY dinners will have a vegetarian dish, but what we got was literally a stir fry with broccoli, cauliflower and canned vegies like baby corn and mushrooms. Though the ingredients into a traditional Buddha’s delight does vary, normally it is a mixture of shitake mushrooms, Chinese cabbage, various fungi, glass noodles and other Asian vegies. Typically slowly cooked in a rich sauce such as fermented tofu so all the flavour gets absorbed into the vegies. What they served is no more than a ‘chop suey’ similar to a Chinese takeaway/food court joint you can get for a few $. It tasted as bad as it sounds, just an oyster sauce stir fry of western vegies. Pathetic. The last main was pig’s trotter. In terms of portioning, this was the most generous with a pretty big trotter enough for the table. However the flavour was lacking. This should be a rich dark flavour as the trotter is slowly braised to breakdown the meat so it melts in your mouth. I found the trotter dry, and there was no flavour to the meat. The sauce was thick and cornstarchy that didn’t add to it at all. By now it was already close to 8pm, but we were still hungry from waiting so long for the mains that we sucked it up and ordered an extra dish off the menu. We got the fried taro ring with chicken. This was actually ok, it seems to be a popular dish at this place as a few other tables that ordered it. The taro ring was crispy, though slightly oily and the chicken was just another stir fry on top of the taro ring as a sort of sauce. Again, there are way better versions of this dish elsewhere, so not missing out on anything. Thankfully this came out relatively quickly. But by now it was already past 8pm, and we could see a crowd of people waiting around at the door, probably for our table. We saw the staff pointing at us to indicate to them we hadn’t finished yet which is why they couldn’t be seated. Then came the most ridiculous part of the night, where the waiters started serving our two dessert dishes while we were still eating the mains. I get it, they wanted to serve us so we would finish up and they could recycle the table. But the way they did it was just plain rude. The lazy susan was still packed with our ¾ eaten mains, and they just tried to forcefully put the desserts on the table when there was obviously not enough space. All we felt was they were rushing us out and wanted us to finish ASAP. The desserts themselves were also not great. The deep fried rice cakes was a slim piece of rice cake sandwiched between some taro/sweet potato variety and deep fried in a batter. Tasted bland and greasy. I took one bite and left the rest. Last was a sweet soup of bubur cha cha, which was watery, runny and too sweet for me. However, I must say that am not a fan of Chinese sweet soups overall so am probably not the most objective critic but my friends on the table also didn’t finish their portions either. By time we finished it was already 45 mins past the deadline we were meant to have given the table back. We noticed they had finally seated the other group waiting for us on a different table, but I think they had been standing around for close to half an hr waiting. Poor guys.
Total cost of the meal was $400+ for 10 people after our added on dish, which all I can say for this price was definitely not good value and a very disappointing meal and experience. I have not tried their Malaysian style dishes, which may actually be better and hence the above average rating on Zomato so can’t comment, but based on this experience I will not waste my money to find out. What is most unforgivable is not that just the quality of the cooking was bad, more so that they were so stingy and excluded ingredients from dishes so they could make a higher profit margin. A CNY dinner is meant to be a premium dinner with good quality produce, and people will pay to do this once a year as a treat. I was asked to maybe not write this review for the restaurant, considering it is the spirit of CNY etc and maybe they were just overwhelmed on the day. My response to that is, we all work hard so we can go out, spend and enjoy a meal together as a group to celebrate special occasions. These guys obviously don’t act in the spirit of CNY and are just ripping us off for as much as possible, and I don’t want other customers to go through the same disappointment as us. Secondly, if you don’t have the skills for Cantonese cooking and don't know the recipe then don’t come up with some fancy sounding menu but take out all the expensive ingredients and serve up a load of garbage. Stick to the hawker style dishes that are tasty and affordable but if you want to play with the big boys and serve real Cantonese food then execute. Period. Melbourne is one of the world’s great cities for food, and there are no shortage of good restaurants. My recommendation is save your hard earned money and go somewhere else. Life is too short to eat food this restaurant puts on the table.

Super friendly service, we loved the homemade tofu!!! The zomato gold 1+1 was really easy to use as well. I also enjoyed the char kuey teow. The salted egg yolk dishes were tasty too. Good flavours and dishes came out quickly as well.

Read the positive reviews and thought this place was worth driving 10 min to try for takeaway- big mistake! Beef tasted old, chewy and like it had been boiled beforehand. The vegetables had no taste whatsoever and the fried rice was horrible. Suffice to say I won’t be going back. $34 for fried rice and beef with black bean and veggies was a joke too.

This place is always busy on the weekend so was happy to finally try it today! 😋😋

Taste 3.5/5
The classic char kway teow as a staple Malaysian dish was tasty but a little soggy and lacking the wok taste but still good. Wontons were super and fresh.
The Mongolian beef was a little too starchy and salty but would have gone better with rice as opposed to noodles

Deco and staff 5/5
As a casual restaurant the place is great and staff were quick to help and polite!

Kam Heong Clams & Salted Egg Chicken very yummy! Same taste as back home
Honest Food Reviews
We arrived at 6:30 Friday night without a reservation and the restaurant was already full of local Malaysian families, which was a good sign. The place was a little loud as expected so not an ideal date spot but it was still easy to hold a conversation.

Design: Interior decour of the restaurant was no frills but well presented, with exposed brick walls and comfortable padded seats. There were the standard seat configurations of 2 and 4 as well as three large tables for groups of 8 or more. The Malaysian paintings on the walls and Buddha guarding the door added a touch of class and authenticity.

Food: We ordered the Wonton Noodle Soup and the Curry Laksa (both $15). Service was brisk and we received our food in about 15 minutes despite it being a busy night. The portions were huge so the fact they gave takeaway containers (FOR FREE) was a huge boon. The Curry Laksa broth packed the usual heat that I love, though disappointingly there were no prawns or fishcake in the dish. The chicken was also very dry and tasted like it was precooked. Two varieties of noodles, bean sprouts and tofu were also included as per usual. On the other hand, the Wonton Noodles were fantastic with flavourful broth, fresh Bok Choy and crispy noodles that melted in my mouth. I also counted six very generously sized wontons filled with pork.

Plenty of parking available on either Doncaster Rd or the side streets at the back of the restaurant. If all else fails you can always park at Aldi next door. All in all I would definitely visit again but make sure you book on a weekend.

Enjoyed all the dishes. Tasty and flavoursome

Friendly staff, food definitely reflecting parts of South east Asia, ask the staff for their recommendations for some unique, homely and lovely dishes. Nice spot for a casual family dinner.

Food overall will appeal to most people, but overall no particular wow factor.

Very friendly wait staff.

Went to restaurant tonight and ordered most of the food recommended here on Zomato. I like the fish head curry - think I would buy a takeaway of this dish and bring it home. The curry will definitely goes very well with some noodles added to the curry. Also ordered the crispy pork shoulder - the sauce that comes with it brings out the taste of the pork. Wanted to order the yam basket but they already run out of it. Next time should pre-ordered this dish when u do the table booking. Food came out quite quickly and service was good. They honoured the Zomato Gold 1+1. Would go back again for lunch one day and try their noodles.

Great food and reasonable priced. The restaurant is getting busier especially on weekend so remember to make reservation to avoid disappointment.

A new gem in Balwyn!

What used to be a tired and half-baked dining experience with the previous management, is now a vibrant and full-house weekender

First found them on Zomato Gold and from the pictures attached, you can tell that portions haven’t been skimped. Delectable dishes and hearty wok-hei flavour that any local Malaysian would recognise. Authentic dishes and well-worth visit after visit with your membership.

Their dinner a-la-carte dishes were wonderful too, especially their homemade signature tofu dish. Remember to book ahead if you don’t want to be disappointed on a weekend.

Five stars!

Great food. Excellent service. Very authentic Malaysian food..........................................

Highly recommended. Authentic and would return to try other varieties. No fuss honouring the promotion.9

A bit tricky as we cannot use our zomato membership for lunch menu . is ridiculous that only dinner menu can use for lunch if you want to use your zomato membership for 1 unlock 1 . The boss mentioned about the special lunch is call “ special” so we cannot use due to the term and conditions. All the special lunch in other restaurant can use . Just not the special set. The boss is tricky .

Malaysia station do not honour Zomato gold 1+1 on public holiday (Melbourne cup) how disappointing and felt cheated. Quality was not good with beef hard to chew and noodle was overcooked!
Magdalene Ho
Really enjoyed the food and honest recommendation of food. Service was slow as there was a lot of people. But overall, great food and will definitely be back.
Vincent Choi
Pleasantly surprised by the quality of the food. Very authentic Malaysia food. Our best favours are Japanese tofu on hotplate, Marmite pork ribs, curry fish head and yam ring with cashew nut chicken. We will be the regular. We live nearby, good for locals.
Snowflower
Tried the char kway teow and Penang mee goreng. Both were yummy, but if i had to choose one, I'd order the latter. The wontan hor seemed like a hot favourite too with praises coming from friends who had it. Service was prompt and polite, and best of all, they were very generous with the sambal chilli!
Food Heaven
Love their foods and the politeness of their stuff. Price are reasonable. 👍👍

Was advertised to open at 12pm (Saturday). Called the owner and said he was running 15 minutes late so we waited 15 minutes. There was no one inside the shop at all during the time we waited. Called the owner again, he said another 5 minutes, so we waited a bit longer. Again, no sign of opening after waiting, so we decided to leave. Very unprofessional!

Ordered the chicken curry and it was curry powder and water with few pieces of chicken and potatoes. The chicken was not fresh! The food is not authentic and we were the only table on a Thursday night at 7:00pm. I wouldnt be coming back for sure even with Zomato Gold!
Sunny Days Melbourne
Kunyit used to be a legendary place with an enviable reputation for serving up authentic Thai food. Unfortunately it looks like its heyday has come and gone.

We visited on a Saturday evening and it was alarmingly quiet. There was only one other table occupied when we got there. We ordered a trio of dishes and while they tasted reasonable, there were some problems.

The beef green curry came in such a small bowl that I thought I was in the middle of a nightmare. While the beef was tender and the curry tasty, the shockingly small quantity diminished any positives of the dish. The honey chicken was food court worthy while the gado gado was quite delicious - this dish saved the night from being a total disaster.

Service was pleasant enough. When we left the restaurant, there were no other customers. It will be sad to see the demise of such a legend but drastic changes would have to be made to prevent that from happening.
Melbfood00
Came on a Friday night where it was quite quiet - 3-4 tables filled out of ~15-20 tables. Staff were very friendly. Food portions were small, definitely helped that we ordered one extra noodle dish to fill us up!
Kthuynh86
Food was really good. The waiter was rude specially when she knew we had zgold and didn't want an entree.

We were told that we couldn't order any duck or seafood, with that being said that meant over 75percent of the menu was not orderable.

Otherwise the food was amazingly good. Worth a try but would not come back due to service.
Penang Lang
Went there last Saturday night for dinner. All the seafood items and eye fillet not included in Zomato Gold. The portion of the food is crazily small. We ordered the red beef curry and it came in a tiny little small bowl, just like the soup bowl. And the Pad thai is a total let down. Very watery, nothing taste like what we normally have . Even with Zomato Gold, it is still not worth going .
Emptybowl
We visited here on Zomato gold and was told a lot of things on the menu are excluded. All seafood and dishes over $30 (beef & duck). I get if the whole fish dish is excluded, but really don’t get yourself on Zomato gold if you do not have the decency to acknowledge and provide fairness to your customers. On this alone I would vouch to never return!

Then on to the customer service. No one greeted us when we arrived. Its not even like they are busy, as there were only one table beside us. I found the lady that served us to be rude...

The food is fairly average, but I would certainly not come again!
James B
For those who would want to come with zomato gold offer, the offer doesn’t include any seafood or beef eye fillet. Would have been great if this type of information is available in zomato as the excluded menu items are definitions not menu set, specials or combo. We ordered Pad Thai instead which is alright.
Reiijoce
Zomato Gold visit -good value as 1 for 1.
Ordered Pad Thai which was slightly sweet, average portion and looked naked with no garnishing eg crushed peanut or green sprig.
The GadoGado was lovely albeit strange mix of veggies.Peanut sauce was generous and delish.Tofu fresh and tasted great.Would be nice if volumed up with some potatoes or crackers.
Overall, good value cos of ZG. Would have Gado2 again.
Saster
Went there on a Friday lunch. Nobody was there except our table. We ordered 2 Pad Thais which were wet & mediocre. The bill came out to be $15.90 each. I then remembered previous visit was less so I asked waiter to check the menu. Waiter sheepishly said he charged dinner menu not lunch menu. He tried to point out he gave us a larger portion which I insist is the same portion as our last lunch visit. Got the difference back and will not be returning.
Nuala
Went in lunch time Friday and was surprised that we were the only people there. I expected more people as the rating was reasonably positive.
We ordered special fried rice to share with our meal,. My meal came with the fried rice but my friend had to wait at least 15 minutes longer for her main course to arrive after mine. When her main course arrived my main meal was barely warm. The meal was nothing to write home about and my friend's meal was the same.
At the end of the meal I requested a coffee, only to be told the machine was broken.
Will never go back to this place again.

I love eating Asian fusion and this place has some tasty and unique dishes with its own character. Interior is very relaxing and the owner couple is kind and friendly. Ive bookmarked this place for the future.

Very authentic Malaysian cuisine! The ambience was very good as well. How could I missed this place until now! Definitely will be back to try other dishes. Hope it wont be lost until my next visit! Will bring all my friends with me next time.

I’ve been here a couple of times but I never left a review. I think it’s about time that I do because they deserve it. I usually get the red curry duck and other stuff depending on how I feel. Everything is cooked with an authentic asian flavour and they have really friendly service. The waitress always greets us with a smile and regularly stocks up our water. Highly recommend for any occasion

nice food and good services, enjoy the atmosphere there, Also we have a good conversation with the owner, he told us they have honored as the recipient of "Top 7" awards by Asian Star TV in "the Best Asian Food in Australia" competition.

the best restaurant I've ever try in Melbourne! highly recommend JAVANESE EYE FILLET and GRILLIED DUCK RED CURRY. also the entree SUNG CHIT BOW is amazing, I love that sauce💕the price is reasonable, two entree, two main courses, one rice cost about70+dollars total. we also make the reservation for the next week, bcz we want try the banquets👏👏see my next review when I try again.

This place is definitely worth going with your family, their food taste great and has nice decor too. I especially love their Asam fish and their Butter prawn, it is definitely worth trying out!

I had high hopes and found they were dashed. Roti bread was old and stale. With regards to the Rangdeng curry they seemed to use vegetable oil in place of coconut milk !? Seems like new owners are doing it on the cheap
Andrew Marom
Picked up takeaway this evening from Kunyit the food was flavorless and average however it was cheap.... we had a red curry chicken, beef noodles and a chicken and corn soup. Wouldn't return ever.
Ivy
It’s quite costly but food was great tho.
The green curry is the best I had ever tried. Customer Service just so so, not that friendly. Environment is amazing.
Andrew Whittaker
Avoid like the plague! All the reviews must relate to a previous ownership and chef. We were disconcerted to find ourselves almost the only inhabitants on a Friday night. The service was inattentive at best, but when the food arrived we were horrified. The dim sims fell apart and had a smell that will outlast religion! We got up from the table and fled

Don’t know how this place has a rating of 4, how deceiving. Food was below average, I think this business was recently sold to new owners. I decided to takeaway my Pad Thai for lunch tomorrow, and to my surprise the staff was bitching about it in Cantonese back of house. No surprise, they only had 1 table of customers and it was my table. NEVER COMING BACK.
Boa Shen
Thai food has special taste because they use special condiment. Not a lot of people like to try it, but Kunyit's food is tasty:) The price was very reasonable.

I really got a bad experienced during the lunchtime . That day I ordered a dishes Nasi lemak as the description said anchovy and egg but I didn't see any in my dishes, and I took back the shop reclaim it anyhow they said sorry people don't like to eat anchovy so didn't have anchovy anymore but I said it's written on your menu. She try to fix the problem my returning a dollar, what?
Next time, if u are planning to have dinner or think wisely and ask smartly 🤞🏼

Had a great meal here with my girlfriend! Very delicious - the roast duck curry was very special and unique! A bit pricey than usual for asian cuisine but the duck definitely made up for it!

Very clean and spacious dining room with great decor and the chopsticks, holders and bowls were esquisite! Great atmosphere - a shame that there werent as many customers around. Empty on a Tuesday night but we didnt mind - deserves more business; very unique and special experience.

Delicious and quality food! The signature duck was a highlight, following by the coconut rice and the roti. Good environment as well. Amazing
Barley And Hops
Ambience was quiet and the place was cold. The food was ok to ordinary. The one and only waitress was totally miserable and unfriendly. Worst of all it's only byo so no beer available. You could maybe have a cheap meal here if you were local just to get out of the house but I wouldn't make a special trip here again.

Horrible service/staff and i didnt even eat in, i had takeaway.
Had ordered takeaway once before from this place and there was a long hairs in a box of skewers, called them straight away and they said next time i came in they would throw in skewers for free. Decided to give them another shot because of its convenience, explained the situation and girl on the phone was very hesitant to give them to me because it was "last year" keep in mind we are only February right now. At the start she offered to replace ONE skewer but after some convincing she decided to give a box(4 skewers).

Food isn't even really cheap and atmosphere of the restaurant is pretty trash...
Does not deserve its 4/5 very deceiving.

Terrible service, ordered a take away, I was told to wait for 10 mins after 10mins wait. Incredible terrible attitude. Will not come back again.

This is our favourite local restaurant.... we come here at least once a month and the food is amazing. So yummy and value for money .... The staff is so friendly .... 10/10 ...
you won't be disappointed 👍🏻👌😍yum yum
Try the entree filo .....

Coming to Kunyit was one of my best dining experiences as the Asian food was delicious and the service was good, the waitresses were kind and very welcoming. I highly suggest coming to Kunyit for a great Asian dining experience

We chose to come to Kunyit for a catch up, because of its good ratings and that it was local. We were not impressed at all.

The restaurant is set up nicely, however when we went in it was quite empty and had quite a dead atmosphere. There was one female staff member only, and she was not very friendly or welcoming. She barely smiled, barely looked at us and the whole time we got the vibe that she wanted us to leave so her shift can be over.

We both ordered Pad Thai, and it was $15 for quite a small dish. Flavor was average, it was too sweet in my opinion. I've had better Paid Thai for cheaper in Melbourne.

Maybe their other dishes are better, but we probably won't be back to try anything else.

Always great food! Best asian food in the area, great space and atmosphere. Tom yum soup, the quail, mee goreng all fantastic! Highly recommend to anyone looking for an enjoyable feed

Classiest South East Asian fares on this side of town .....The former owner of Okra, a quaint spot in Camberwell established this place a few years back.Following their previous traits for good South East Asian food (with a few Chinese fares) in a much bigger venue, much easier to get a table now.
On the high side, somewhat value for money.

Very disappointed. I used to love this restaurant This time around the service was very ordinary. The pad thai was bland. Curry was lukewarm and roti was not even warm...It was COLD. When we told the waitress that the dishes were cold, there was no apology and she was hesistant to return it back to the kitchen

Duck salad still to die for. Red curry prawns amazing. Great food. Our old fave still has it. The food here never disappoints. Give this place a try or retry it's worth it.

The restaurant space feels good. It is nicely located and laid out. Surprisingly so. The service is calm and moderately efficient. The food is mid range and occasionally just above. There's nothing in what we had out of a number of standards including pad Thai, steak and black bean sauce, etc that reaches above average heights. If anything, the place is rather confused about the style it's serving. It's neither Chinese, Thai or anything else. It's a confusing blend at best. Neither is it cheap, quite the opposite. But, it filled the spot at a family event on a mild Thursday night.

It was a lovely night for Valentine's Day with my beautiful wife. We had the banquet and the food was amazing. Very tasty. The san chow bow was my personal favourite.

Great service, great atmosphere and convenient location off the freeway.
Came here on a whim, and very glad we did!
Great curries that look deceivingly small, but we're impossible to finish as much as we wanted to. Would recommend to a friend in a heartbeat!

BYOB and BYOW according to the sign, wish we knew!

We have been going to Kunyit on and off for years. The food had always been very good and the service just a bit too slow. With the change of ownership we felt that the quality of food went downhill (but was still quite good).

However, we went there last night and were very impressed. The service was attentive (although it has to be said they were not very busy) but not over bearing or slow. The food was all excellent. We had the red currey duck (of course as its their unofficial signature dish), pad thai, singapore noodles and pad grapow beef. There were 5 of us and it cost about $115 including corkage. Excellent.

Improved service but food took forever to come out. Service has improved and the food tastes decent but serving size is quite small and dishes took over 40 mins to come out despite there being only 3 tables on a Friday night. We saw the kitchen staff buying takeaway from McDonald's!! A statement about the food?

Avoid if you care about Authentic food with reasonable service and at a reasonable price.. As it says in the title....let me begin by telling you that I am Malaysian born and bred and have lived in Oz for long enough to know what quality to expect in Malaysian style restaurants, considering that we must lower our standards a bit and not to expect 100% authenticity outside of Malaysia.

Service is absolutely appalling.

Even given a "restaurant handicap" of being a diasporic Malaysian restaurant in Oz, this sad place still does not even measure up.

It used to be somewhat reasonable bordering on good when the Malaysian lady from Okra Hawthorn took over from it's then first owners ( The Airport Lounge ? Malaysian group also ) some 6-7 years ago.

Since then she has left (probably 5 years back) and this place has changed hands (yet again) maybe twice ?

It is now run by some Korean people.

Food quality and Service have gone downhill and prices have gone up, ironically.

And as a lot of diners have complained, their "Malaysian" Beef rendang is just beef chunks floating on watery stew much like a can of Campbell soup.

My personal experience having most recently eaten there not long ago (after it had changed so many hands to the current Korean people) is that the dishes are tasteless and the service is so bad that I had to wait 2 hours for our dinner (on a Thursday Night !) to be served (granted we had ordered a la carte dishes for 3 people with steamed rice - but even then isn't it not unreasonable to expect that by the 45 minute mark (which is still slow by restaurant standards), we would at least see our first dish out?

But....No!,....we had to endure wait upon wait, only to be assured "coming, coming, we're busy", when we protested.

And..... it was not even reasonably affordable...they charge you as if you eating out at a Western style restaurant....upwards of high 20+ to mid 30+ dollars per mains dish ( depending on whether seafood or not ) in a 3.5 star (at best) Asian restaurant style ambience environment with a distinct lack of staff.

For those of you who are non-Asian.....a middle Melbourne suburban Asian restaurant with "just OK" ambience should just be charging under $20 per non-seafood mains maybe low $20's for seafood and even then that is bordering on the high ceiling of reasonable.

My rule of thumb is : (non seafood meat dish): $13-$15 and seafood:(prawns/rockling fillets) at $17-$19 - Whole fish : up to $25.

Looks like the owners have no idea about Malaysian cooking and worse, are only there to make the quickest buck with the lowest overheads (really short on wait staff and chefs/kitchen hands) and then hope to sell off and get out, on to the next owner.

That's why this place keeps changing hands.

Avoid and put them out of business....we diners deserve better.

Fabulous food. Lovely owners Mary and Wu. Come along in October there is no corkage charge. Must try the red duck curry, duck salad or Javanese steak. YUMMY

What a disappointment. We used to frequent "Kunyit" on a regular basis when Edward was on the floor, however since his departure we have dined on 2 occasions and been very disappointed. Our most recent visit (last week) found us as their first customers (6.00pm) and we waited and waited and waited for someone to greet us but to no avail. After about 3 or 4 minutes I walked to to kitchen area to alert them of our presence and then things started to happen. I ordered Beef Rendang and it was presented, luke warm with the beef chunks floating in a thin, sloppy "soup". My wife ordered the chicken curry and received the tofu with vegetables? The problem was eventually corrected but shouldn't have happened. We didn't order coffee or desserts as we were disappointed and thus we left at about 7.15pm with the restaurant only about 1/3 full....previously it would have been "chockers" at that time. The staff were very casually dressed (no uniform) and didn't appear as professional as previously Whast a pity...another good local restaurant "bites the dust". I really hope it can lift its game again
Hugabelly
Disgusting. The food here used to be really good last year, however since the change of management .... what can I say. The beef rendang looked like a can of beef stew swimming in a salty sauce of YUCK. There is nothing authentic about this place except that the owners are from a part of China that didn't even bother to research the basic ingredients in a gado-gado or a char kuey teow.

The price for a small bowl of rice? $4.50

Go in, if you enjoy being ripped off and having only one flavour. SALTY. In everything.

Catherine. Dined here last night and really enjoyed the food. Very fresh and tasty. Only downside was the roti which seemed overcooked. Restaurant was packed so they must be doing something right.

Great place amazing food , had the sun choi bow TL start was amazing , then for main had the green curry , this has to be the best and I mean BEST green curry I have ever had , fantastic place would highly recommend.

The good reviews must be the opinions shared by diners who have never actually been out of Australia. The nasi goreng tastes more like a lean cuisine mixed with half a bottle maggi chilli sauce. Don't let the authentic name fool you.
Eugene Phang
No, I'll never go back again! setup is cosy but the foods really put me off.
Sophian
Bad service. The service is extremely poor which ruined my evening. :(
Bec
Hit and Miss. Food is always great. Service...not so much.
Once we waited 2 hours for our food. Another time had the best service imaginable! Take away is a priority here rather than eat in customers. Need to work on that.
Lexi
Shocking service - I have been many times, yet on the last visit have never experienced such shocking service. Will never go again
Daniel
Excellent!. Went last night and had the $39 banquet (min 2 people). Amazing food full of flavour, even the green curry which I'm not usually a big fan off. Chicken satay was very tasty. Service was very good and food prompt and brought out at a rate that allowed us to eat at our own pace and get cold.

Will be back!
Jac
Great food & experience. Food was excellent, generous serves which were great to share, and a nice, relaxed pace so we could really enjoy the meal and our company!

Poor service and food. Doesn't like it
We stood at the door for approx 5 min before someone from the rear of the Restuarant waved at us to come to the table. We were sitting for about 45 min before we tapped a waiter , who was cleaning a table and preparing for the next day, to take our order. We waited for another 30- 40 min before our entrees arrived. They were cold and the meat had a bad odour. .. Down hill all the way after that.... Cold, bland, left over scraps thrown together . At least we enjoyed our wine .. That goodness for byo.

Great place to go!. We went to Kunyit to celebrate a family birthday last night. I had searched the Internet first and was so glad we made this choice. From start to finish we found the staff went out of their way to be of help. Loved the food: just a little different to all the other Thai restaurants. Attractive decor too. Will be back!

Long long wait. Make sure you order in advance unless you don't want to eat for two hours.
nothing special about the food and extremely average service

Balwyn Treasure. As a long time customer through two changes of ownership, this restaurant is a consistent gem. My favourite is the red curry of duck closely followed by green prawn curry, but it is hard to make a mistake with any menu selection. Service can be slow, because this place is always busy. It is BYOW and generally a Pinot Gris, Chardonnay, or Riesling will match most selections. Well worth a visit and takeaway is offered if you can't get a booking.

YUUUMMMM. Could not recommend the butter prawns, the nasi goreng, and the duck with asian greens enough! The Chicken in plum sauce is also a huge favourite!
I do however, recommend going earlier in the evening as service is much better. If you usually dine around 7:30, try going at 6:30 instead.

Went for dinner with a friend. It's a little gem in Balwyn. Food was great , ambience was great and love the decor of the place
Katrinatim
Good food. Great service and great food, the curry was really good. Serving size could've been a bit bigger (green chicken curry) but overall I would recommend it

Style Dining. A very good restaurant with excellent food. Reasonably priced. Good service. I have eaten here many times & would have no hesitation in recommending this restaurant.

Lovely. Enjoyed every item.. Green prawn curry is very tasty and a generous serve- chicken filo entree is a very nice starter also. Very friendly service. Will definitely go back.

Agreed -- The Red Curry Rocked. I went for dinner here on the weekend and was extremely pleased with the service and the meal. Definitely the best Malaysian food in the eastern suburbs, and a lot less expensive than a lot of the places in Balywn and Camberwell these days. I can't recommend it highly enough!
DVG
Very impressed. Had the banquet for 14 people. Cannot fault the food or the service. Catered for dietary restrictions without fuss. Will definitely go back. Recommended.

Not Authentic Asian. If you like your Asian food to be authentic taste and any level of spice you should stay well clear. This place is geared to a European palate, bit bland in my opinion.

This is a really good find tucked away inconspicuously in the Greythorn strip shops. The food is tasty and well presented. The service is excellent and hospitable. Highly recommended.

Kunyit for dinner party dec 2012. Group of 12 went there for dinner and had banquet. All food nice except dim sims just ok. Ample food for all. Staff could have been a bit more friendly and smiled a bit more. Yeah still good enough to return.

-----24 Sep, 2011-----

6.5 /10. Busy place. Had variety of entres all good except the dim sims.. did not taste very fresh. Main courses all good. At the time due to crowds. service bit slow . fav dish .... satays.

Father's Day 2011. My family took me to Kunyit for Father's Day dinner (last night). We had a range of dishes and they were all very good. Particular favorites were the prawns in green curry, braised duck and the swimmer crab and chicken rolls (an entree). The service was very good and the prices were reasonable for the quality. We live locally and will be back.

Superb. Regular diner at this restaurant & have always been impressed with the great food. Always busy on weekends & service will become somewhat slow, but great restaurnats always are.

Thank you Urbanspoon for finding Kunyit for me! We had family take away from here last night & it was MAGNIFICENT! Peppery vege spring rolls, smokey, slightly sweet, fat, juicy & authentic chicken satay, spicy kari ayam with huge pieces of chicken, delicious Thai beef stir fry with pepper & garlic....best we've had for years. The place was packed & filled with the loud buzz of happy diners. Great value, good sized meals means I'm eating delicious left overs for lunch today :)

Excellent food and service. Not sure what to expect and I was pleasantly surprised. The filo with mushroom and water chestnut was just fantastic, as was the beef salad. Mains were great and the menu was not your standard boring affair. Service and atmosphere were excellent and it was full on a Tuesday night so book!

--UPDATED 2015--
Gone right off.
The service is not what it used to be. The food was not very good. Nobody liked. it. I would not go back.

Food Addict. I wish all Asian restaurant can serve delicious food like Kunyit. Excellent menu selection, good size servings and well priced. It goes to show you don't need to visit some higly over rated top restaurants to get good food.

Quality food, friendly service, and nice atmosphere. My wife and I had the Sunday Hawker style lunch.
Nasi Lemak was nice, with the highlight being the ikan bilis with sambal - simply sublime. The chicken curry was good quality without being spectacular, and I'm sure it said beef rendang on the menu! Vegetables with satay sauce was a nice touch as an accompaniment.
The Laksa soup was delicious although a bit light on for ingredients.
I hear the char kueh teow is good and will probably try that next time.
BellaItalia
A great little find in the suburbs. Fantastic food, great atmosphere and always busy. Recommend you book well in advance. Chicken green curry is amazing and takeaway is fabulous.

Excellent food (but watch out for the quail and heaters). Most of the dishes here are very tasty and delicious. Favourites so far are the Char Kway Teow, Yuen Yeong Mai (lunch only), Chicken Satay, Prawns on batter and the Ayam Panggang Kunyit (grilled chicken). In fact, you could pick anything at random from the menu and it will probably taste great. For dessert, the Sago gula melaka is excellent and so is the signature Durian icecream.
For kids there are 2 caveats. The fried Quail is heavily marinated with wine, so much so that our 2 and a half year old was drunk by the end of the meal (it was all he had). And if your children have eczema, avoid dinner as they turn up the heaters on full blast. The boss / maitre d' refused to turn off the one pointed at our table, on the basis that the corridor that leads to the kitchen / toilet would "get cold". He capitulated on our third plea for mercy, but pulled a long face. This was the only blemish on our experience over 5 or so visits so far.
