Came here to try the epic donut burger! Man it was so delicious and insanely creative, never had anything like it before! Very cool concept of a sweet peanut butter jam donut together with a beef patty. A must try! And a pretty photo for the gram :) Their other savoury burgers were pretty tasty too. Decently priced too! They have a range of pretty and yummy donuts too, will be back to try other flavours! Kind staff at the counter to welcome you.

THE BEST BURGERS! Please do yourself a favour and try EVERYTHING. The burgers here are amazing! The buns are the lightest and freshest things ever. The patties/fillings are incredible.

THE BEST BURGERS!!! Extremely tasty, healthy, fresh and full of flavour, not to mention the delicious Italian style donuts!!! Their burgers are a family take away favourite, satisfying even our most fussiest eater. We've never been disappointed us since we discovered them a couple of years ago. Balwyn Canteen knocks it out of the park in a market that has quite a few burger places. This Friday afternoon, we received delicious complimentary donuts for us to enjoy (I so needed a sugar fix with my coffee after a long week). Keep up the amazing work, you are the BEST and thank you for appreciating and remembering your regular customers. Would have taken a photo of the burgers but they went as soon as they arrived!

This was a fantastic burger. Juicy Patties with a good crust, and not too greasy. Leaves you feeling good after eating it. The Patties are quite thick so go with the single unless you’re extra hungry

Fantastic burgers that can be made on gluten free buns which is awesome for coeliacs (if you’re OK with not a completely GF prep environment) . Unfortunately their chips are not gluten free - so just a heads up that this you can’t get your typical burger and chips meal. Please make your chips gluten free guys :((

It is one of our best spots to have burger in 2021 😋 We ordered: 🍔 TRY IT OR DIET ($15) Donut bun, smashed beef patty, hi-melt cheese, maple bacon, peanut butter & jam 🍔 DELUXE ($14) Crispy fried chicken, swiss cheese, coleslaw, jalapenos, chipotle aioli 🍔 ONION RING ($7) The `TRY IT OR DIET` is surprisingly super good and very addictive - the peanut butter and jam gave an extra depth to the savoury burger. The beef patty was perfectly cooked and the two donut buns were the perfect replacement to the normal buns. This burger will ruin your diet but must-try at least once 😆 The fried chicken burger was also flawless - crunchy crispy full of flavour chicken breast - no complaint at all. Highly recommended burger spot here in Melbourne and we dare you to try one of their crazy burgers here.

After reading reviews I had high hopes about this place. But I was disappointed. The table inside was very greasy. Onion ring was too greasy and salty and I can tell that the oil has been reused too many times. The burger was ok but not worthy the money I paid. Overall I don't recommend this place.

Went today with a friend and her children. Had the best burgers ever! The brioche bun was so soft it melted in your mouth. The donuts are also amazing. This place is a must to go and check out.

Finally got a chance to see what the hype is all about. Ordered the deluxe chicken burger and it was absolute heaven. I love chipotle aioli and the chicken was also super juicy and flavoursome. The only regret was that I didn’t get a donut but I knew I wouldn’t be able to enjoy it as much after gobbling down the burger, so I’ll have to go back for it next time!

This place was REALLY hyped up for me, but didn't quite meet my expectations... Don't get me wrong though- this place serves good food. <br/><br/>We tried the BFC burger and it was definitely one of the best burgers we've had! It was a little spicy, so be mindful if you're not into spice. The serving size was decent, the chicken was juicy but crispy on the outside, the sauce and cheese combination was perfect and the buttermilk bun was delish! <br/><br/>The donuts personally didn't suit our taste buds. They are reasonably priced, are made fresh and come in a small selection of flavours (I think 7 to chose from). We tried Biscoff, tim tam, nutella, peanut butter jelly, OG glaze and oreo. The donuts are quite heavy and dense and the dough is buttery- sort of like a doughnut/soft croissant texture. This would definitely suit some people- but I prefer a lighter fluffier texture dough. The biscoff and nutella donuts were delicious- super sweet, filling, and indulgent, but I personally didn't like the others and found them quite bland (especially the original glaze). <br/><br/>Like I said- this is just my opinion. The burgers were great, but the donuts were super hyped up for me, and just didn't meet my expectations. The burgers are up there with some of the best in Melbourne, but I'd recommend a few other donut places before this one. I think we will be back though to try another burger!

Got the foodbeast with added fried chicken, bacon jam, and cheese curds. Fried chicken was the best part, pulled pork was decent, beef was pretty good, bacon was perfect, mac & cheese croquette was ok, bit disappointed with cheese curds being deep fried. Overall 8/10 burger. Also got a peanut butter & nutella thickshake which i had to wait 20mins to drink 😂 shake was really good, perfect flavour. Donuts were soft and bursting with flavour. Favourite was the PB&J and nutella. Highly recommend balwyn canteen for burgers, donuts, and shakes.

After multiple raves about this place, I finally managed to make my way down to it. The best surprise? How close it was to One Piece Cafe. Balwyn has just raised the steaks in the burger market. Located on the main street of Mountain Highway, you should try and find a parking spot off the main road.

I dropped by Balwyn Canteen on the way home for a sweet dose of donuts. I purchased:<br/><br/>Strawberry Jam donut - this was simply amazing. The donut itself was nice and yeasty. The strawberry filling was not too sweet. The combination was almost perfect. <br/><br/>Vanilla custard donut - I'm a custard lover and this version of custard was sweet, creamy and full of vanilla goodness. Definitely a mood changer and something I could have every single day. <br/><br/>If their food is as good as their donuts, I'll be back asap!

The best burgers and donuts in town! Not to mention the fries and thickshakes are amazing too! My fave burger would have to be the fried chicken burger - I’m usually super picky with fried chicken burgers but it was on point and the other burgers I’ve had have also just been so good! The owners are lovely too which is always a bonus :) Highly recommend a visit here if you’ve never been!

The burgers are definitely delicious and so are the shakes. Reasonably priced and friendly service. The seating is only for a small crowd. We sat at the front which seated 5.

Ordered the “deluxe” which was a fried chicken burger with coleslaw, jalapeños & chipotle mayo and a serve of sweet potato fries. The fried chicken was cooked well, super tender and juicy although was a bit of a let down that it was a small portion and didn’t fill the whole bun. The chipotle mayo was 10/10, highly recommend. Chips were crunchy and soft on the inside. Little expensive for the serving though. <br/>Before coming I didn’t realise it was more of a takeaway joint, there’s only an odd 4-5 chairs of seating-bar style facing the wall. No tables or chairs except one larger one outside. If you’re after a quick bite I’d recommend takeaway. All in all pretty decent

Got here after a recommendation by ain dogs. A small joint despite the hype, but do not be fooled. The burgers are absolutely on point. Food Beast, or something beast was it's name, and it came with double beef patties, fried chicken, pulled pork, mac and cheese croquette and double cheese. A sexy, juicy and heart-stopping, literally and figuratively speaking, masterpiece. The rich and cheesy croquette, the succulent and crispy chicken, the flavourful patty and pulled pork, the soft fluffy bun - everything hit the spot.<br/><br/>The much more toned down Junior burger was just as delicious, and each and every element making up this burger was faultless.<br/><br/>The thickshakes lived up to the hype too. Turn it upside down, and you'll get an idea how thick it is. Creamy as, and tasted amazing.<br/><br/>Friendly and down to earth service, I think I have found my favourite burger joint in Melbourne!

Very friendly, patient and efficient staff. Just walked passed the store by chance and thought I’d give it a go. The person serving me gave me their honest recommendations which I really appreciated. I ordered 2 chicken burger, onion rings, a thick shake and 2 donuts to go. The chicken burgers were still warm when I got home, buns were very fluffy and soft and the chicken was very juicy. Onion rings were crunchy and the thick shake had just the right consistency. I would definitely recommend this place for anyone who is up for a juicy burger.

Burgers are on point!! A long time coming to try this little spot situated on a busy road in Balwyn and boy did it live up to my expectations. I had to try the standard double beef, bacon, jalapenos which came to a reasonable price and I could not pass up the thickest thick shakes I'd ever seen. The beef was perfectly cooked, melting in your mouth sort of stuff 😍.

Staff Pick 1 burger (Buttermilk chicken, lettuce, red onion, ranch, Swiss cheese, tomato). <br/><br/>I thought the bun was great, the service was good, the atmosphere is pretty much small, but pretty aesthetic with their paintings on the walls. <br/>The chicken was also super soft and tasted great with the dressing. But overall, the burger was pretty average - taste of chicken dominated, and cheese/tomato/ranch was very subtle.

How hard is it to find a bad burger in town? Pretty easy, But it is hard to find a burger in Balwyn. Craving a burger we didn't want to go to Maccas so we decided to go to balwyn canteen. We ordered over the phone and went in and picked it up. Got in the car and it smelt AMAZING. Anyway took a bite of the burger and my god. Definitely one of the best burgers in town. And where do I start with the chips, IN-CRE-DI-BLE.

One of the best burger places in the local area.<br/><br/>Had the ‘Senior’ burger. Finished it so quickly. The juices were running down my hands so much. Flavours were amazing. And oh my god, the ‘Supa Crunch’ chips are a must, probably in the top 3 I’ve ever had. Unreal. Saw an ad for this place on Instagram a while ago but only managed to go there tonight. Got the deluxe burger with added onion rings and bacon, which lived up to all expectations I had. Also got an Oreo thick shake which was so thick it took all of my mouth power to get it up the straw. An easy 5/5 for me. If you’re thinking of going here please do yourself a favour.

Balwyn Canteen is without doubt THE BEST BURGER Joint in Melbourne possibly the world! We used to frequent these guys when they were Heroes Burgers in Hampton Park and for us it is worth the drive now out to Balwyn for not only these delicious fresh burgers (buns are made in house) but their thick shakes are THE THICKEST we have ever tasted, if you can hold your shake upside down with zero spillage you are on a winner plus the serious amount of peanut butter in these babies is insane ! Oh and don’t forget their made in house donuts !

Ordered the crispy fried chicken burger and chips on Uber eats. It was delicious, especially the burger! The sizing was perfect, not stingy but not way oversized. The chicken was good quality, cooked perfectly, moist and it was super crunchy on the outside. Im looking forward to trying another one. Only dissapointing thing is that there wasnt meal deals.

Amazing , absolutely amazing. Best chicken patties I’ve tried so far. Hands down best chicken burgers in Melbourne. Price , customer service , taste everything is on point. Plus their corny rooster burger was icing on the cake. Definitely one of my most recommended place.

If you’re going to eat burgers, do it right! And at Balwyn Canteen the burgers are done to match anyone’s taste! The food here is fantastic, and you can have a simple cheese burger al the way to a 1 kg Donut burger filled with fried chicken and other delicious goods! For me, I’m a simple-ton and I loved my cheese burger, with pickles, cheese and a delicious mayo! My friend got the chicken burger and loved it. Now we could have gone a little crazy on the fries, but we went for some sweet potato fries. But you must get the shakes! They are so thick, you can tip it over your head and it won’t tip on you (warning this may vary on how hot the day is haha). I would recommend this, it’s more of a take out than eat in but there is some seating inside and outside if you want.

This place makes an excellent burger, I got a junior and added tomato, lettuce, chicken and onion rings. The meat was so juicy and the bun was soft and didn't get soggy. I rate the burger a 8/10. I also got a salted caramel thick shake which was extremely thick but a little bit too sweet.

Am I ever glad this place opened up! Food is always up to standard (try the junior burger with a mac and cheese croquette or pulled pork. Or both) and the best thing is how flexible they are and how much you can individualise your meal. Chips are seriously good. Hole in the wall space without much seating, but this isn't an issue as most things are much more of a take away style. Love it and will be back (regularly...).

All I can say is fantastic burgers done very well.<br/>Beef is cooked well and is made of quality meat, chicken fried to perfection and so are the dim sims.<br/><br/>My only issue is the cost of a coke.... grab a milkshake instead

Me and my friends went there for lunch and it was great. The thick shakes definitely lived up to the hype and the food was good aswell. The only downside was that there isn’t really space to sit and eat with friends so we had to go to a nearby park which was disappointing as it was raining outside :/

Their burgers are so good and fresh! Didn’t try any of their donuts or shakes. This place makes me feel guilty. I guess it’s only a place for a cheat meal.

The burgers are so good here! This place is a must try if in the area the standard beef burger with bacon could quite possibly be the best burger I've ever had. The super crisp fries are also dam good. You will probably need to clear your schedule after eating to digest and reflect.

Came by here in search of a quick burger fix and was blown away by the juiciness and deliciousness of the special burger of brisket and patty topped with cheese curds and oozing with sauce. Seems to be a top takeaway option for Balwyn locals, and guess I have another excellent takeaway choice now. Donut burger looks to be really interesting and I shall have to make some time to try.

10/10. Got burgers from ubereats and it was such quick service we were so impressed. My boyfriend has coeliacs so got the gluten free bun and says it’s the best he’s had! Perfectly cooked patty with fresh crunchy chips! Plenty of bang for your buck

The buns were nicely toasted and stayed intact throughout the entire experience. The Swiss cheese melted perfectly into the crevices of each chicken patty. The chicken patties were crumbed and cooked to absolute perfection, succulent as it was crispy! The slaw and the chipotle aioli just went in perfect dynamic with the rest of the burger! Each bite was pure bliss and sublime.<br/><br/>The sweet potato chips were amazing and cooked to perfection!<br/><br/>All in all, really awesome experience, looking forward to go again!

Firstly the layout of this place is beyond what I had expected! I didn’t know it was a little takeaway place like a fish and chip shop. Anyways beside the point we decided to get shakes and donuts after already having dinner elsewhere. We opted for the thickshake and WOW they sure are the thickest in Melbourne. A little TOO THICK to even suck up through the straw. Regretted not getting just a regular shake. The consistency was basically a McFlurry but can’t fault the taste. Had Tim tam donuts as well and they were so fluffy and delicious! The filling inside I expected to be Nutella or a sweet chocolate but it was not sickening at all! Yum yum we will be back to get burgers and regular milkshakes!

Came here the other day and ordered a seniour burger with one less slice of cheese and a side of fries with no salt.<br/><br/>Unfortunately the burger that came was just the default version. I asked the young man about it and they apologised. One of the cooks ended up saying she will make a new burger for me. She asked if I wanted to start on the chips first and I agreed. But when I got the chips I just realised it too came out default with salt. But at this point I didn't want to go back again even though I could have and simply had them with the salt - not the biggest of deals but strictly speaking due to a condition I should not have too much salt per day, not that I dislike the taste of it. But having said that the chips were very nice and definitely not over-salted.<br/><br/>The burger that came was all fine and good in a typical burger - hard to really screw up a burger - albeit there was some burning on the edges of the patties.<br/><br/>The biggest perk or positive of this place is the value for money. Hearty burgers like the seniour with double patties for only that price.<br/><br/>I wasn't going to give it a 4 as I can't believe you can get such a simple order wrong with small but easy alterations. But I am willing to give them the benefit of the doubt. It may simply be inexperience as they seem relatively young and this place hasn't been around for that long.

Veggie burger was yum and very filling. The buns were so soft and fresh. <br/>Sweet potato chips inside the burger were ok, bit salty. Potato chips were super crispy and unstoppable, better than expected!!<br/>Service was fast and friendly. Good dose of fast food.<br/>

Very disappointed with the meal. The Vegi burger was good, but the loaded chips a huge disappointment! I was told the loaded chips had aioli in the mix, but the so called aioli was like American cheese....yuk! The hotdog was another disappointment.....American style! Will I be back? sorry no I will take Grill'd any day.....

Got ubereats for lunch, don't really rate this place. The burgers were alright, I could have made better and less soggy. The loaded fries were loaded with just too much cheese and some kind of mayo, never thought I would say too much cheese but it just wasn't great. The fries were super soggy as well.<br/>Donuts were more bread like, wouldn't get again I'm afraid =(

Ordered a Senior Burger with bacon & a side of chips to go (it’s not equipped for a dine-in experience). I started snacking on the chips in the car on the way home. Perfect crispness, saltiness & presentation. They were bangin’ just as they were, but I suspect they’d amp up to partake in a killer poutine.<br/><br/>I pulled over to sample the burger. I’m glad I did. We shared a special moment. I couldn’t fault it. At first glance, it appeared that there was too much bacon. I was so wrong. Bonus points for bacon crispiness. Every mouthful was satisfying, right up until the last bite. The cheese was perfect in quantity and meltiness. The patties were juicy and perfectly cooked. And the ratio of sauce, ketchup, mustard & pickles topped it off so well. I think many burgers fail with the wrong bun, but this bun was fresh and perfect in its bread quantity (it held the burger together without being overbearing).<br/><br/>Staff were prompt and polite but not chatty. I’m glad they suggested I add bacon. <br/><br/>I felt full but not disgusting. Will find it difficult to stay away from this place. Need to sample their extensive donut display & find out what their milkshakes bring to the yard.<br/>

A truly special place.<br/>I've been twice; the first was for dinner and got some kind of meal deal which involved a burger with beef and fried chicken, a shake and a donut for $20. The beef is seasoned perfectly with a pink centre and the chicken!!! Omg so succulent! The only thing (although I don't find it to be negative) is because they make their buns and donuts fresh each day without any nasty bits, they can start to feel a little stale by the evening. The second time was for lunch and at that time of day, the brioche is beautiful! I think the best part of their food is that you can eat all that fast food and not walk away feeling sickly full. It's great quality. Plus the service is amazing, they are some lovely people!

Head down to Balwyn Canteen and get some awesome burgers now!<br/><br/>If you haven't noticed, Balwyn Canteen not only do Burgers, but they also do Hotdogs, Donuts and Thickshakes! I can guarantee you they have the Thickest thickshakes in Melbourne and the fluffiest donuts in Melbourne! The burgers are just down right quality and they taste amazing! Everything is made from scratch so every bite you take will taste like love! The team at BC are always welcoming and the area is also very chill.<br/><br/>Try them out and you will never go back to regular burgers again! Did I mention they do their burger buns in house daily, so they're fresh!!!

Ahhh so delicious. We ate so much here and came away feeling lovely and full but not over stuffed and without the greasy feeling you can often get from burgers. It is essential to add sides to any of the burgers as that’s the magic. I can highly recommend the junior with add ons of bacon and egg but honestly it’s being able to make your own creation that really makes it special. The thick shakes )or should I say THICC because boy oh boy they are dense) are delicious and the perfect accompaniment to the burger. Finally you would be remiss to leave without trying a fresh donut as they are as lovely as the staff.

Yet another new burger shop in the East. I had the Senior Burger, the taste is fresh and clean with a good amount of sauce and juice. At $12 it is reasonably priced compared to its competitors. <br/>The service is friendly, but the cooking was a bit slow. They seem to cook one burger at a time (incidentally that is how I live my life - "one burger at a time") so I'm not sure how they would go during busy times.<br/>The shop is setup like an old style fish and chip shop, with a single bench table along the wall and stools for eating in.<br/>I will definitely eat there again when in the area, and I will be trying one of those tempting donuts in the window.

Went in for Sunday late late. Tried the feed me special off instagram. The burger was awesome perfectly cooked, excellent cheese ratio, chips were tasty and crunchy. The thickshake was good but hard to drink as for the first time in Melbourne it was actually thick. Will be back! Would recommend. Not a typically looks good tastes average instagram burger shop. Their food tastes very good and looks great too

Updated review - Revisited Balwyn Canteen and this place was good the first time but now it’s reached new levels. The new fried chicken was actually incredible. The menu has expanded a great deal and the donuts are now some of the best we’ve ever had. These guys continue to work on their craft and it shows. Undoubtedly one of Melbournes best burger venues. They can do it all.<br/><br/>After seeing all the Instagram hype we knew we had to check out Balwyn Canteen for ourselves.<br/><br/>It lived up to the hype packing tasty burgers, shakes, sides and donuts! The burger itself was good - beef super juicy, cooked medium rare, with plenty of cheese and that delicious canteen sauce.. chicken coating was a little oily but the meat itself very nice.<br/><br/>Highlights of this place in our eyes was there shake and donut combo. All sorts of good!

This place does not fail to disappoint, burgers are super tasty and really well priced. I had the Deluxe and can tell you I will be back to try more from the menu.

Pretty tasty burger, I tried the fried chicken deluxe and thought it was well balanced with a good sized piece of bird in there. When making a chicken burger most places like to stuff the largest peice of chicken they can find thinking that more is better. Well its not!! ; it ruins the ratio of meat to filling to bread and these guys have got that part spot on. Chips and shake were on par here

Absolutely amazing!! house made Donut's, house made burger buns, perfectly cooked beef patties and thick thick milkshakes. Not a huge venue, but loved every bit of their menu. A must!

Lazy Friday nights call for UberEats, and last Friday I was in the mood for a burger. <br/>I have my favourite burger spots however, a recommendation from a friend saw me try somewhere new and order from Balwyn Canteen. I ordered the junior burger and added lettuce, tomato and pineapple. I must say, for $9.50 (without the add ons) the burger is very good value. The meat was juicy and tender, and the cheese perfectly melted. I also loved the taste of their ‘canteen sauce’ however, there was just too much of it for my liking. I also wasn’t a fan of the bun that they used and ended up leaving about a third of it. Overall, it was a pretty decent burger with nice flavour but just not my favourite. <br/>(More of a 3.5/5 but alas, no half stars anymore).

The sky is the limit.. actually Nah, that is non-existent. haha. The burgers here are awesome and they welcome customization with open arms. (Perfect for me) Pricing was a little higher than usual but overall was fantastic quality. And they certainly know how to build a burger.

Balwyn Canteen is heaven on earth. BC is cute little revamped chippie. Formerly a Balwyn Fish&Chip shop, Balwyn Canteen is raking in the dough. The Doughnuts & Burgers are beyond amazing. The brioche buns are so fresh, and doughnuts are so delicious. The staff are also very friendly and service is quick! We also absolutely adore their fabulous Thick Shakes, so so Thick and Creamy - some of the best in Melbourne. You can stack a doughnut on top of your thick shake for a little extra - love it. <br/><br/>TIP: Do order one of their famous giant homer doughnuts for a special event only - $25!!! Do come to Balwyn Canteen on a Cheap Cheesy Tuesday for cheap junior burgers. <br/>

I loved this venue and I loved how passionate the owners are about what they do. <br/>Probably one of the best burgers and sweet potato fries Ive ever had and well you all know I love my doughnuts so of course I had to try them. My favourites were definitely the nutella and almond croissant😍😍

Having seen this place on instagram it was my suggestion for double date night with our burger loving friends. We knew it was a smallish place but were able to score a table outside as we waited for our burgers.<br/>Disappointingly the donut range was pretty depleted upon our arrival but fortunately there was some freshly made donuts cooling on the bench top so we were able to ask for our preferred flavours to be created.<br/>I ordered the deluxe burger which was a crispy fried chicken. It came on a freshly baked brioche. I love that the burgers and donuts are made in house daily. <br/>As far as burgers go it was a pretty solid one and I enjoyed the sweet potato fries. The peanut butter and jelly donut was also a winner but I wasn’t a huge fan of the salted caramel shake. It was far too sweet and I didn’t get that salted flavour at all. Had me wishing I opted for Nutella. <br/>They also do uber eats which might be an easier option given the limited capacity of the venue

Been so hyped to come here for ages but actually left a bit disappointed. I got the hooked burger which was nice. Could have had more sauce though and my friend got the junior burger without cheese. But what really bugs me is that I didn't like the donuts! Who in this world doesn't like donuts?<br/>I am a big fan of donuts and I don't know what was with these ones but I didn't like them. I honestly think it has something to do with the dough. Maybe wasn't sweet enough? I'm not sure but I was devastated because I was super pumped for the donuts.

Horendously over-priced fish and chips. $10 for chips and you get less than a normal minimum serve. Ok quality. A pity we had to wait while many Uber eats orders went out the door.

Great new place in the heart of Balwyn. Admittedly, the burgers were big and tasty enough that you could be easily sustained on that alone without anything else but the loaded fries were a necessary inclusion - might as well when you’re already there right? Have to say, as well done as the food was the highlight was the Nutella thickshake. Really, there’s not much to dislike about a Nutella thickshake alone but these were done incredibly. The perfect balance of thick and flavoursome. Fantastic cheat ‘meal’ in itself. Go and visit the Balwyn Canteen, you won’t regret it. <br/>

This place is amazing. Their Fries and Burgers taste so real and yum. My uncle even said it took him back to the "good old days", with real thick cut chips, soft and juicy burgers plus the thickest thick shakes you'll find in Melbourne. I would definitely recommend this old Skool canteen!

Found this Gem on zomato and the pics looked great! And the Chicken Burger definitely lived up to expectations!! Service was great, staff were fun and there definitely was a fun vibe! We will be coming back.... left with a box of donuts and they look amazing too!
