Review Toi Shan Chinese Restaurant - Bendigo

Mitch Harrington
So, an honest review. Went there for dinner on a Saturday night and couldn’t believe how quiet it was inside. Like Chinese food ASMR. Or a sensory deprivation tank. Food was good but atmosphere was similar to a funeral. Would have made more sense if it was a funeral Staff were good but food was pretty slow. There was a stage when the entire restaurant was silent and one lovely patron, God bless him, farted for like 8 seconds. Honestly, it was pretty funny and was a highlight of the night. Says a fair bit about the night. Hats off to uncle Peter for being the best chef in the world. (See photo) Quite the achievement. But please, Peter, if you are so good, maybe put some music on or something.

Very slow service. Waited over an hour for food. (Three dishes) 40 minutes for can drinks with wrong number of glasses. Food was not hot. Food was nice but very small portions. Not enough staff for an Easter Monday. Not a restaurant I will visit again. Atmosphere was non existent.

Very nice, tasty and well presented dishes and the quality of cooking is to a high standard. Service and atmosphere also good. I've dined at this restaurant many times and the consistency always remains the same.

Delicious food made up for slow service, but then the cafe was full. Will definitely go again. Reasonable prices.

Highly recommended!!!!! Need to try! They have a set for 2 or more than 2 people! Traditional Chinese food, absolutely 5 stars restaurant!!!! I always have Toi Shan 1 or 2 times per week.

If I could give this Chinese Restaurant no stars I would. This is the worst food I have ever eaten in my 60 something years and we waited 1.5 hours 2 large fried rice, not fried, plain white rice with a few peas carrot and a cube of ham/pork microwaved with a weird smell Honey Chicken, burnt dry and reheated Sweet and sour fish was received in an oily brown paper bag and microwaved to a soggy greasy mess $73 later and it all went in the bin!

Your average Chinese Restaurant. Lots of food selection which is a plus. Food arrival can be very slow. They delivered our protein orders and nearly finished them before our special fried rice arrived 😅 There was only 2 waiting staff when we dined in. They’re very attentive. Lots of parking available within the vicinity.

Friendly staff, friendly owners. Always accomodating, personal touch. Quick service - unless during 'rush hours' overburdened with take-away orders. The food is simple and delicious.
Historically: the oldest Chnese restaurant in Australia! The lanterns should be in a museum.

This restaurant is very iconic to Bendigo and has a nice atmosphere and convenient location.
My only qualm is that we waited quite a while for our food to come out- I also work in a hospitality job so I understand food outlet can be slow on busy days and I try to be understanding. Even with that in mind, I was starting to question the length of time it took to receive our meals. It was about 40 minutes.
The food was really nice when it did come out. We had two main dishes and some plain rice which was perfect portions for 3 of us. I hovered between 4 and 3 stars for this one.

Please stay away from this place. Just moved to Bendigo and passed by the shop and thought why not try a dish. So we went in to order a takeaway Szechuan steak with rice. It was the one of the horrid meals I had in life. For some apparent reason the beef was fried and utterly dry (unsure if it was leftovers) and does not taste like anything like Szechuan steak. Also found a small amount of crispy noodles under the beef which made me suspect it was leftover that was re fried and served. Don’t think I ever had beef tougher than their fried Szechuan steak. Won’t be coming back again.

Ventured off to Bendigo this morning to again thoroughly enjoy one of my favourite lunch meals, Chinese Prawn Omelette for $21.80 at Toi Chan served by Eddy. I was seriously surprised at the sheer number of prawns in this dish and as usual it was cooked perfectly and served steaming hot. I've visited this restaurant about 3 times now over the years and I've always found the service provision excellent, polite and helpful. The eatery is quite large with a capacity of 48 seats.

The Juror's Verdict: Food 4.5/5, Service Provision 4.75/5, Will I return: Definitely

Phill Jury (food critic & writer)

Look. It sure is food.

Northern Fried Chicken = Sweet and Sour Chicken served on aluminium foil, not Shandong Chicken, as we discovered first hand.

It wasn't terrible, but it certainly wasn't fantastic. The chicken and corn soup had literally not one piece of chicken, bland. We ordered a chicken fried which was below average and the crispy steak with schezaun sauce, this steak was soggy, the sauce however was not terrible. It was edible, but I wont be returning. I feel as though the reviews before are totally misleading, this place isn't up to the standards of the places with similar scores.

we have been going to the Toi Shan ever since they came to bendigo. In the good old days you would turn up with your saucepans and they would put the food into them. that was 40 years ago.
Now you have a choice of takeaway or sit down, which we do, its quiet and has plenty of room.
the choice is varied, if you cant find plenty to suit your taste, you are too fussy.

Absolutely delicious. My family and I were up in Bendigo for the day and decided to stop at Toi Shan for a quick bite to eat. Being Chinese ourselves, my mum is an extremely fussy eater and skeptical of the quality of food served there. We ordered two dishes (off the separate menu in Chinese) - the Black bean fish and Chicken and Chinese mushrooms, served in a little clay pot. To our surprise, both dishes were absolutely delicious and mum was a huge fan of the latter. She couldn't shut up about how delicious it was all throughout the meal, claiming it was even better than meals from Springvale, Melbourne! They may do food more catered towards the western tastes, but Toi Shan definitely knows how to do a delicious, authentic Chinese meal as well. You just have to ask for it.

Gross smorgasboard. Stopped in at lunch time as I didn't have much time and thought a smorgasboard would be a good quick meal.

The selection was horrible:
- a bunch of the standard deep fried stuff that you get everywhere
- a noodle dish that was really just noodles with a few specks of whatever they had at the time thrown in.
- what I guessed to be beef and black bean.
- sweet & sour pork (you know that deep fried one with the cherry red sauce)
- an omelette
- chicken & corn soup.

The omelette was the nicest thing since it was complete artificial and deep fried like the rest.

Might as well go to a shopping centre Chinese place next time as it would surely be nicer than this.

Very very basic western Chinese. If you are used to good Melbourne reataurants don't eat here. Sticky tables, slow service, flat soda. Food very average. Think sweet & sour, black bean, and lemon chicken.

A warm welcome at Toi Shan. I stay overnight in Bendigo quite a bit and frequently eat at Toi Shan. The management always gives me a warm welcome. The staff are all polite and provide quick service. The food is fresh and of a generous amount, and the manager adapts dishes to the customer's tastes. Vegetarian meals are available, as well as Chinese meals to suit the Australian taste, and specially made more traditional Chinese food (with a little notice). The surroundings are restful and the diner can watch life go by on the main street through the plate glass windows. The cost is exceedingly reasonable. Highly recommended!

Did you know that Toi Shan is the oldest continuously operating Chinese restaurant in Bendigo?

Good and friendly service, nice tasty food and quite big serving. Good value for money.

Our local. We get our fix of Chinese food here on a regular basis. A no frills, cheap restaurant with, usually, attentive service.

Good honest chinese. Best in Bendigo. Great prices, good food, and also if eating in has local wines.
