Review Global Vegetarian Cafe - Bentleigh

The quantity was good, however the food was quite bland. I liked the hot n sour soup but the price for the main dish seems bit high for the quality provided. It may have been rated the best at some point in the past but it's not anymore.

so so good which was unexpected as i hardly see people in there and it has a food hygiene award from 2000 displayed (off-putting), however food was incredible and cheap! i have been here maybe 10 times and never had a bad experience. would give 5 stars if the ambience was a bit better (: but food is always lovely

This place is the epitome of a hearty feed for an excellent price. Everything is strictly vegetarian with 8 dishes being completely vegan and most being able to be changed if needed. The staff are welcoming and friendly but not at all over bearing. Pictured is the miso soup, Singapore noodles and one spring roll (they arrive in serves of 3) that didn’t last very long after this photo was taken.

We arrived 15 mins from closing time and were welcomed in warmly. Ordering, service and food delivery was very prompt as the restaurant was almost empty due to close to closing. The food was hot and flavorsome. The Hawaii burger was a fried patty and could have been made healthier but was a large size. The pad thai was very large and faultless. Lots of flavor and fresh ingredients. There are 14 tables inside and 2 steps to enter the building. Toilets are available. The staff are very friendly.

Always amazing!! My daughter and I share the southern Indian curry mix. Amazing!! For my birthday, 7 friends & I came here for lunch. We shared many meals. Best pad Thai I have ever had. Japanese rice, delicious, The lentil soup is so fabulous.

Favourite vegan restaurant 😍 For $21, you can get a 3 course meal! Generous size meals and there is parking always available out the front.

Have bought dinner from this place at least 4 times in the past 2 months and have never been disappointed. The sweet and sour chicken is amazing and my boyfriend loves the Pad Thai. Always fresh and delicious. Would highly recommend, even to non vegan people like myself.

I had a kong po chicken and black rice pudding both were so good...loved it so much

I really can not understand how this place is rated at 4.3. Either the reviewers who rated it high do not have any taste buds or they do not normally eat fresh food. The food is fairly pathetic and cooked with cheap supermarket sauces and tin vegetables. And a surcharge is applied if one pays with card. Never again!

Went last night and had the Chicken sweet and sour. Husband and I have just started going without meat for the last two weeks. we love our chicken, and having this meal, i didnt miss it. Best fake chicken i have tasted. it was hard to choice a meal as so many looked appetizing to me. It was not busy but it was Monday night. Fast service, nice and polite. We will be back.

Most people know I eat meat 🥩🥩 and love my steak and slow cooked roasts but tonite I turned vegan and had a vegan vegetarian beef in black bean sauce dinner and OMG it was so tasty but more so tasted like real beef. No I won’t be a vegan any time soon (Doctors orders) but it was a good experience. Next I’ll try a veggie chicken burger. also had SINGAPORE noodles and vegan spring rolls @globalvegetarianormond #vegan #veganfood #vegetarian #vegetarianfood #vegansofig

Back in the late 90s, this was pretty much the only place in the south-east that was completely vegetarian. Has been around for a very long time, for good reason. I have been going there a long time! The owners have changed over the years, but the fundamentals are the same - cheap, good vego food.

Currently the owner's are Chinese, so the menu has some great Chinese dishes on there and generally an Asian influence. I spent 8 years in China and am so glad that after moving back to Australia I get to live around the corner from this place.

20+ years ago I used to love when my parents picked up Global Vegetarian for dinner - I wasn’t vegetarian at the time but was absolutely crazy about the food here (especially the samosas).

Just moved back into the area and it’s my new local. Lovely staff and delicious, hearty food. The real romance of restaurant dining, no matter how humble, is a special thing, and it’s here in buckets.

This establishment, a restaurant, local in the inner-Melbourne suburb of Ormond. It’s my personal favourite to go to.

Service/food/atmosphere 10/10/10

Generous portion and a great variety of choices on the menu. It took me so long to pick what I want to eat but it’s worth it. The food is good. I really enjoy it and it’s a very comfortable setting.

Never understand why all these hippy vegn restaurants have such bland food. Just random stuff put together with some soy sauce.. such a waste. Run far away from this place

Stress free vegetarian food. Went to this place after work. Spent most of my evening looking for a vegetarian place in the area. Amazing service and great serving sizes. I was pleasantly surprised by this place. Will definitely go again.

I ordered Cantonese stir fry. The service was great, place is very clean. The portion is super generous, it literally like wanted to fall from my plate. The veggies are fresh, but the cauliflower is lil bit off. And the sauce, I think they're definitely using a store bought can sauce, which is kinda makes sense because they serving super fast and I know my food guys.. Feels like need more seasoning.. a real spices.. But I definitely come back again to try the other menu

Been invited by friends to this place. I was cautioned not to expect the typical cooking that I'm used to. Found it interesting with a fusion of east-west cooking styles, and a focus on healthy eating.
It turned out great.
Recently, I have been informed that some dishes may have elements of onion or/and garlic. So, strict veg friends please be aware, and do let them know of your requirements when placing orders.

I do hope that they will consider re-adjusting their ingredients to cater for even more vegetarians :-)

Like this place a lot... lot of good options to try if you are vegetarian and more over do not need to worry about any of the fish sauce or oyster sauces mixing as this place is completely vegetarians. will be back for sure

This place is so lovely! I often dine in or get take away and they are always so on point! The food is nice and clean, tasty and with generous serves. The staff is lovely and very accommodating. I have no hesitation in recommending this place.

Great simple and nutritious food, love love love this place, being coming for many years and will do for many more👌,the sticky black rice pudding is a must, very nice)

Order soup with wholemeal bread and get supermarket loaf slices. Really poor. Do the owners understand healthy food? This restaurant is so 1975

What's changed with you guys?I have been going to Global Veg since you opened, but unfortunately, the last year has turned me off!Do you have new recipes? A new chef?
I am so disappointed! My once beloved mango cheesecake falls apart and is dry, yet soggy. The south indian curry mix is slathered in oil and sauce and yet it has no flavour anymore! Please bring the old food back!

UPDATE I ordered the polenta chips (delish) and sth indian curry mix via uber eats and was pleasantly surprised. I would order again. It's not as good as it used to be but it's better than it was last time. Polenta chips were yum- the curry still needs less oil and gravy-ish sauce. More fresh food!

Every dish ordered was awful. We could not finish any of our dishes.
Either the owner(s) pull up their socks or this cafe is going out of business.

The staff were friendly and welcoming. Gave us complimentary papadums and samosa. Delicious Food and generous servings. Will definitely be back.

My new favourite lazy night takeaway place - staff are always friendly and welcoming, food is great value (I got curry rice last time and nutty rice this time, both are huge serves so it's one giant meal or two smaller meals for $11.80), and best of all, it's fresh honest food. No msg, no unnecessary additives, and all vegetarian. As a vegetarian it's amazing to have so many choices on the menu, and as a vegan it's one of the only restaurants where I don't have to list every single possible food I don't eat - it seems the default is vegan and a few dishes here and there will have dairy or eggs. They even have began desserts on offer!
I've only been here twice, and was greeted by all smiles and free wontons when I picked up my order today. Not a fancy restaurant, but comfortable, welcoming, and honest. I'll definitely go back again (and again, and again, and again, etc).
Thanks Global Vegetarian!

Absolutely adore this place!! Hugely overordered (oops), but the food was so yummy, staff friendly and the restaurant was super hygienic :) such cheap meals ❤️❤️❤️

I cannot comprehend how this place has such a high rating (4 at the time of writing this). To all the positive reviews... Do you have no tastebuds? This was such a disappointing experience for two long-time vegetarians. We both badly wanted to try this place, and have since vowed "never again".
The food was so bland that we didn't even finish our meals. I ended up adding a ridiculous amount of Sriracha sauce to my dish to make the meal edible, since it was like eating steamed cardboard. And even then, the Sriracha sauce just turned it into chili steamed cardboard.
We left our plates with half the food (which is unfortunate, since I hate wasting food), but we just could not eat this. It reminds me of food I would have made when I was 13 and had no idea how to cook, let alone flavor food. Not something I would have expected to pay $12 per serving for.

Even the dumplings and spring rolls were hugely disappointing. Surely there's a better filling for dumplings than corn? I've had much better dumplings elsewhere, even from those shady dumpling places with questionable kitchen hygiene.

I'll level with you; The meals are good prices for the serving sizes, but you'd honestly be better off going to the supermarket and buying fresh ingredients and making the same foods at home where you can add flavor, for the same price.

The only positive is the customer service was good.

Restaurants such as Global Vegetarian often make me wonder why I don’t become a vegetarian full-time.

You don't come here for fine dining, and fancy service, you come here for good honest food at a great price. I've had many things off the menu here and all of it has been on point, but my personal favourite is the laksa. As a vegetarian it's great to be able to order anything I want off the menu, and know that it will all taste delicious.

Great value for money. Huge portions and fast service. Some dishes are more flavoursome than others so it all depends what your are after. Can't go past the south indian curry, not spicy like true indian but still crazy good. Get into the polenta chips too!
Suzie Milovanovic
Tasteless. Ordered a rice dish - Cantonese stirfry. Looked and tasted like something I would have cooked when I was 12, think gluggy rice with flavourless vegetables mixed through, then dumped with oil. Very disappointing as it is hard to find good vegetarian food at regular eateries, and I had high hopes for this place as its local. Maybe I ordered the wrong thing? Maybe next time I will cook my own food.

Came back with a friend after 2 years in the hope that the food had improved but sadly it hadn't. We ordered the vege tempura and Japanese tofu for entree and they were both okay. The tofu was crisp on the outside and soft inside, the sauce was okay. The tempura was also cooked okay, but then its pretty hard to stuff up tempura. For mains we had the Thai green curry which had no curry and tasted like it had been cooked in massal stock then thickened with cornflour- no flavour, no curry, no sauce! Left half of it and only ate what I could because I was starving. My friend ordered the Hokkien noodles which promised lots of veges but also lacked these as well as flavour.- she found 2 slices of mushroom in it!! She also didn't eat the meal after tasting it. I think the 4 rating was done by staff as the food is consistently bad, even after 2 years. NEVER again!!

Good food, generous servings. Clean restaurant. They only take cash so be prepared.

Beautiful flavours in this fresh and refreshing food. I thoroughly enjoyed my meal and it was very reasonably priced. The staff were lovely and were very helpful. I will definitely make this restaurant a must to frequent often.

Ho hum. My wife is vegetarian and I've tried this a few times and surprised minimal flavor. Actually zero taste. But I do like Thai so maybe my taste buds expect more
Phoebe
My favourite are the polenta chips with tomato, they are the best thing on the menu in my opinion, simple and delicious.

This vegetarian restaurant ticks all boxes .Sensational value for money .Food is always generous ,piping hot and bursting with goodness and vitamins.Global vegetarian always delivers an excellent vegetarian dining experience.

So happy they are open for lunch again!!! Good food, prices and generous servings. What's not to like!!:)

Definitely one of the best vegetarian restaurants with very friendly staff. Healthy food and very generous servings...love the laksa, nutty rice, amazing samosas and the black rice pudding is one of my favourites, also do freshly squeezed juices. Well worth a visit.
Eat Clean
Food lacked flavor and I question whether they use too much MSG as I thought all the meals looked shiny. I couldn't finish my main meal and the dessert of apple crumble was tinned apples with bread crumbs on top! Revolting.

The only item I've had of their's is the Sticky Date Cake which I have fallen in love with. It is so soft and flavorful yet so lite!
Boss
Wonderful lentil soup!

It's good but the best thing ever. Basic but feels like home cooked meals. When you want something simple this is the place.

Servings are MASSIVE so just order 1 meal for every 2 people. Oh and it's cash only.

Healthy, Tasty, Vegetarian food. I don't know how I missed this place for so long. Maybe because Remezzo is right across it..

First - its all vegetarian and love their variety of healthy and tasty Asian-vegetarian dishes.
The one with black pepper sauce is my favourite. But everything else that I have tried is good too.

It is a worthy find, and I think I have finally found a replacement for Derby Thai. They hit the right taste notes, atleast for me. The city can do with some more of these places for sure..

PS - They don't accept any cards. Cash Only.

Good option for vegetarians. Please note, BYO only. We had the Laksa, curry, samosa and polenta. No complaints about any of these dishes. I would go back.
Grimm
Okay vegetarian. Good as an option if in the area but far from the best vegetarian place I have been to...we tried a variety of dishes and found the curry to be pretty watery. The roti bread was simply reheated tortillas. Worth a try but I probably won't be returning unless I happen to be in Ormond.

We LOVE Global. A really lovely place with fantastic vegetarian food that is great value for money. We always share a main, and get about three entrees and never spend over $35 to be more than full.
The staff are always very welcoming and pleasant, and the meals are served promptly.
The quality of the food is always excellent, and the vegies are fresh, abundant and cooked perfectly.
We might love Global a little too much....

Yummy Meegoreng. Yeah for like $10 bucks you get a very decent meal.

Great value for money; super friendly staff. I'd recommend the black rice pudding with coconut cream. I'm looking forward to going back.

I could go Vegetarian for this food. I always thought Vegetarian food was pretty bland until we tried Global Vegetarian. We go there for takeaway and for when our Veg friends are over for dinner. What a little ripper. It has changed hands a few times in the last 10 years with the menu is slowly getting bigger. The food still tastes great to me. Our favourites include Southern Indian Curry (Lentil) mix, Green Curry (Lemon grass) and Spaghetti with walnut and eggplant. The take away meals are more than big enough unless you like to eat large, then just right. Enjoy..

Cheerful, friendly staff and healthy, delicious food make eating at Global one of our favourites. Then there are the low prices and huge serves! I love Global Vegetarian.
Nuttyrice4eva
Get Nutty over the Nutty Rice!. I recently developed the habit of lifting the finished plastic container up to my gob, and slurping the nutty sauce goodness all up in one swift movement.

Soon afterward i pass out in a nutty rice induced food-coma.

I usually come-to a few hours later lying on my couch and i need to take a shower and change my clothes, so intense and widespread are the stains on my shirt and pants.....not to mention soul.

I miss GLOBAL VEGETARIAN. Since leaving Melbourne I would have to say that I miss my local vego restaurant more than all the lovely Viat-namese or Indian restaurants...
HIGHLY reccomend the Southern Indian Curry YUM!
Vegesauras
Global veg. Has a great menu and fantastic prices. The food was very nice and I would definitely go again

Not quite what we're after.... Maybe we ordered badly, or expected a little more. Everything we ordered was deep fried and a little stodgy. Yes, spring rolls were excellent. Prices seemed very fair and there was a good selection of dishes.

I found Global Veg. rather cold and unwelcoming with lots of little hand written "rules" posted to the walls - like do not move tables -fair enough )we saw this one after we joined our two tables together, I would think a table of eight on a wednesday would have been a welcome sight) I was perhaps a little put out when we asked for 2 wine glasses to be told it was $2.00 each for the hire of these.

Am I being Picky? in the end we finished our meal accross the road at another well known North rd eatery.

I have not given up on Vegetarian yet! next stop "lentil as anything"
Eat And Be Merry Crew
Sometimes it's nice to have something special and fancy to eat. Other times it's something simple and home style. Global Vegetarian, with its mainly Asian style vegetarian dishes, definitely fits more into the latter. Global Vegetarian is located on North
