Review Imperial Peking Restaurant - Blakehurst

Penny Christie
The Imperial Peking Restaurant in Blakehurst is a local favourite that has been around for many years. They make the most amazing food and some of our all time favourite dishes are the mud crab, shredded beef, prawn toast and mermaid tresses. There is plenty of parking behind the restaurant or across the road.

A suburban Cantonese restaurant that offers yum cha daily in an old-school atmosphere environment that's well laid out in its pagoda design making it quite comfortable to dine in. Going for yum cha on a weekday lunch, it wasn't that busy (but they had a steady stream of customers) and staff came out regularly with trays of small baskets and plates of classic dim sum. Generally the taste of most dishes was up to scratch with traditional flavours and overall a place I would come back to. Prices are standard and a little high for the suburban location but they offer 5% off if you pay with cash. Service is good for this type of slightly upmarket suburban Cantonese restaurant. There's free parking across the street.

The best Yumcha we had in Sydney so far. We ordered some prawn, pork/prawn and vegetable dumplings, egg tart and mango pancakes. We were happy with everything we ordered. The egg tart is a must order dessert, so yummy (but forgot to take a photo). 😋

Very nice restaurant with good setup One of the largest menus I have encountered Plenty of good food to try The food was amazing and the service was good, reasonable prices Better book before showing up as it gets busy there

Reasonable price and the dish is just delicious, a good choice for dinner with cozy environment!

Good food, nice ambience but very slow service. If you're ok with a leisurely meal, this is a good place but don't come here if you're starving and wanting a quick feed. We ordered the pork szechuan style (excellent and spicy), the Peking shredded beef (not spicy at all despite being described like that on the menu and was actually very sweet), steamed green vegetables in oyster sauce (Ok but what can you expect from a veggie dish?) and two soups which were pretty good (wuntun soup and combination crab). And then you get the obligatory fortune cookie at the end which is always welcome!

I have been coming here for years, I understand after covid and short staffing. But the staff was standing and being unattentive is another thing. We have received the worst experience in any dining experience in Australia at this place. Food was cold, staff didn't care and was rude. We sat down for 30mins before someone even came over and offered some cold leftover dish. We will NEVER be coming back again.

All the locals know this is absolutely the best place for yum cha. This visit wasn't an exception. Everything as usual was fresh, tasty and delicious. Good service too.

Had yum cha here on the weekend and it was excellent. Had everything we were looking for- the standard selection of dumplings, dim sum, pork buns and mango pancakes that you would expect. Service was efficient and friendly which is not something you always get at a yum cha restaurant. Really enjoyable experience.

Gets very busy around 12 for Sunday yum cha but if you come early it’s not bad. Yum cha is very good and consistent, service can be sketchy because of how busy they get but all very friendly. Love coming here.

For chinese its not bad. Love the fried rice, honey prawns. Service is ok. Take away is a fast service. Even had yum cha once. Would go back again.

Very good and relatively authentic (I'm Chinese so should know) yum cha with great ambience. It was also not too expensive either given the great ambience.

What sets this place apart from nearby yum chas is that it has pretty good service. Never underestimate this aspect.

Imperial? More like impossible. As in, impossible to enjoy this place. Worst yum Cha ever. Don't bother with this place and its terrible service, and food.

Not the greatest but most definitely no where close to the worst Chinese cuisine I've eaten!

Ordered takeaway, which was amazingly fast (10 min pick up), hot and fresh. Staff were friendly and helpful. The beef and vegetables were beautiful and tender, Imperial Chicken crispy and not too over battered, fried rice was simple and cooked well.

If you are expecting authentic Chinese you may be a little disappointed, as most dishes are targeted toward the Ozzie palate. Will have to give their daily yum Cha a go soon!

Very disappointed in takeaway I ordered. A friend told me not y5o order as she wasn't impressed with her experience and I should have listened. Ordered what was a fancy name for one piece of prawn toast which cost me $8.50!!!. Other 2 dishes i ordered was terribly bland and about half onion.

Always come here for a great chinese meal! Usually come on Monday nights, hence it's rarely busy. Food is a little bit on the pricey size, but it comes with great serving sizes and the staff are always friendly, albeit sometimes hard to understand. The ambiance is lovely and the temperature inside is always at a comfortable level. Would definitely recommend the peking shredded beef as a favourite dish

The restaurant has a nice large dining room and the service is friendly enough, but I found the food during dinner to be quite bland, and also expensive for what was received. I have been for Yum Cha during the day though, and found it enjoyable.

Sunday with great weather, end of summer. I saw the cars lining up parked on the side road of Stuart Street. The building is eye catching, with a classical Chinese pavilion style with a beautiful tiled roof and lion statues at the main entrance. The restaurant has a rather small car park at the back, but rather not sufficient for its needs at this rush hour. We parked a block away from the main strip of King Georges Road and strolled to the front. We could see the Princes Highway across the junction. The place was chock a block, most people who were waiting for a seat sat in an inner rounded pavilion, whilst there were mainly small tables for lunching. Welcome to Cantonese yum cha in the suburbs. The Imperial Peking has been in business for many years - its custom has been mainly mainstream Aussies, although it is located in a region of greater Sydney that has many Asian demographics. Service is fast, although there is not much room for use of food trolleys. Yum cha goodies come out as the kitchen crew dictate, but it is always useful to look at what people are eating and the trays being held by wandering staff. There are around 40 items available at lunchtime, ranging from deep fried, steamed, sweet to roasted. Noise is part of the fun and ambiance, but the turnover of tables is reasonable and the food offered keeps moving. Although there is no nicely dressed up lady to greet us at the place where customers first arrive, the guy who coordinates table seating is quick footed, although at times arriving guests may not be able to find him.We enjoyed the char siew bao, the siew mai and the stir fried vermicelli. Some of the other items were pretty ordinary on the bite. We asked for beer but that did not come, so we dropped this. It was a rather busy time for the staff, especially those having to clear tables for the waiting guests. Unlike in Din Tai Fung, we could not see the kitchen. By the time we left, albeit on a quick lunch, the dessert items had not come out to be served - never mind, maybe next time. The Chinese tea blend served was pretty average.

What a interesting location! It's on a busy main road and I have passed it a few times, and my friend finally took me here.
The seating is around the restaurant with a bar in the middle. I was told there is a function room upstairs but I did not see for myself.
Food wise it's just average, nothing stood out. The pork ribs was a bland, not enough flavour or black bean in it.
They come around with trays not trolleys by the way,nil issues with service
Price wise what I expected to play
It's just ok

ordered a peking duck. Only received skin and bones. No meat or what so ever. When I called, get told that the peking duck in Australia is all like this. unbelievable. Not happy.

This place is always busy, with diners waiting for a table but you do not have to wait very long. Food is fresh and its turned over quickly due to how busy it is. Yum cha prices are fair. Prices match the quality.

Annoyed. I would go to Imperial at least once a week but not anymore!!! It started with my entree we ask for 1 serve of San chow she brings us 6 serves as their was that many people I told her no and she walks away leaving the food and saying okay you eat. The mains were not worth the money at all and the fried rice had nothing in it other than egg. The host than gets the dessert wrong it was a total disaster than the blll arrives - on average I think you pay $10 extra for a plate of food but it's ridicules when you are required to pay for food you didn't even ask for the norm would be its automatically deducted from your bill but no she stood their rolling her eyes and telling me I was wrong I ordered 6 serves of entree I said why would I when a few of us at the table do not eat meat, eventually she removed the amount than she has the hide to say do you want to leave a tip for the bus boys and was extremely annoyed when I said no, I felt like saying I just paid $230 for rubbish - never will be back!!!

Our table was pretty much the only one with non-Asians over there so that’s always a good sign. The food was your typical yum cha items served in bamboo steamer baskets, and it was tasty enough. We were able to both order from the menu as well as grab food off dim sum carts and trays. I think it came out to about $25 each for the 7 of us, which was very reasonable as well.

This is our Number 1 restaurant for YUM CHA as the staff can actually speak English and the service is friendly (our favourite waiter always says "Hello Hello" in a jolly voice). Although I agree it's a bit over-priced compared to other YUM CHA places, they do have a good variety of tasty dim sims available and I never leave without having a classic Mango Pudding . We went once for dinner and the meals were quite ordinary (maybe it was what we ordered but everything turned out to be greasy). We will always go back for YUM CHA as we don't mind paying extra as the food and service is worth it.

I might be sketchy on many Chinese traditions, but the one tenet I faithfully believe and observe is the partaking of dim sum on Sunday. As a devout believer, I also love going mid morning as opposed to after midday, with lots of other people and to a pla

Imperial Peking made a good impression on me as soon as I saw the building. It has traditional Chinese architecture, much like the buildings in Oldtown, Shanghai. The interior is just gorgeous - dark, polished wood and most notable, a circular design. The

Nothing special. Served old vegetables, standard yum cha. Yum cha items are not brought in carts as there isn't enough room. So the food can be slow to arrive. Overall, apart from the veges being old it wasn't bad. But there was nothing special about it either.

Don't bother. Even the Asians at the table next to us were screwing up their noses.
Used to be a great place for quality yum cha even though the staff were always rude. They are still rude, provide very poor service and dry, bland food.

This used to be my favourite Yum Cha restaurant (even over HK) for fresh, tasty, authentic Chinese dumplings.

However, I have noticed a change for the worse over the last few years.

While the staff are very accommodating and now much more friendly to Westerners than they were years ago, the Yum Cha items have started to cater much more to what must be thought to be the Western palate, with at least half of the dumpling options now fried!

Think spring rolls, fried prawn wontons with mayonnaise and chicken wings... Unfortunately seeing much less of the 'traditional' Yum Cha options like chicken feet and congee - and much less Chinese patrons now!

Still the best place I've found in the area, but will now be looking around for a new favourite Yum Cha.

Best place for quality Yum Cha and quality service. The food and staff are equally fantastic, which isn't the case at some of the bigger Yum Cha joints around Sydney. My husband and I have been going here for 7 years and it is always delicious.

Poor service and sparse food made this a very disappointing yum cha lunch. We waited 15 minutes before the first food appeared and from then on it was extremely spasmodic. A 25 minute wait for the dessert trolley and someone to refill the teapot resulted in me asking for the bill.

For yum cha I would rate this close to the best city restaurants. There are more options for the western taste, such as fried varieties and that is the downside to this place for me... I prefer traditional yum cha.

Very delicious if you want to experince traditional Chinese food this is the place to go
