Review Shuk - Bondi

Redd Lightyear
Visited a while ago. Food was fresh and delicious. Good coffee. Love the outdoor seats nice vibes and neighborhood.
Geoffrey
Great cafe away from the Bondi buzz. The food has the authentic Israeli touch. Delicious and rightly priced. The staff is very friendly and the kitchen delivers fast. Lots of seats outside which makes it both comfortable and convenient COVID-wise They also sell bread and pastries. I highly recommend it.

This establishment goes beyond your normal street bakery to serve a menu full of culinary delights. Be prepared to take some time in making your choice. Too many delightful options

Good coffee, friendly staff. The Shakshuka was delicious,, I was planning to try the dessert and pastries but there were flies in the place where they were stored and displayed.

Good coffee and good food, service is ok. Waited by the “please wait to be seated” sign but no one came up to us, had to approach someone to ask and they told us to sit anywhere with a ‘duh’ tone.. not enough pita for the meals, asked for a top up. Nil, had to order and buy more pita. Also hard to flag down staff for help, not very attentive

I’ve had brekkie here twice. The service is busy but friendly and efficient. The staff are warm friendly dog lovers and there are heaps of cute dogs. The food is good. I even saw an A list Hollywood star here on my previous visit. I don’t get the gripes about app ordering and pigeons keep up the good work!

Went there on a Friday for lunch. Staff were relaxed and pleasant. Have no complaints about venue. In a good location (15min stroll to Bondi beach) lots of space between customers (covid friendly) busy, but not over crowded. The chairs are comfortable (I'm a plus size with chronic pain so this is important and helpful) 2 outdoor seating areas and seating indoors too. Great decor. 2 bathrooms, very clean. Even a disability bathroom!! Excellent! Only small issue is they have a very small step to get inside area - so it's very close to being completely wheelchair accessible but not quite. I was impressed at the wheelchair accessible bathroom as most places don't think of that. The main drawcard the Shuk dishes live up to the hype. Needed extra Pita bread. Very fresh food and bread. Chai tea a little weak but still good. Can't comment on sweets or coffee as I didn't try them this time. The menu is tempting and lots of variety. Ambience is pleasant with many relaxed families and dog walkers. In a safe area. Overall deserves 5 stars.

We had the cilbir bagel and the shakshuka and they were both great. Service was friendly and fantastic. It was a great experience, would highly recommend!

Loved all the dishes we ordered!! We had the Classic Shakshouka w/ Lamb Sausage, Green Shakshouka w/ Sujuk, Beef Kofta w/ Salad, and Hummus w/ Lamb. Food was amazing, coffee was great, other drinks like their Pomegranate & Lime Soda, and the Berry Smoothie was on point as well. Definitely worth making your way in for this cafe. Friendly service too!

I would give this place zero stars if possible.
We put our name down out the front and waited five minutes before deciding to head somewhere else. We walked past the backyard area which had multiple empty tables so decided we would check if we could sit there. The waiter sat us and we ordered food and drinks after having to convince the waiter that ginger beer was not alcohol. The blonde hostess from the front arrived and lectured us about sitting down and said the table we had been sitting for 10 minutes was booked and wanted us to move off it but did not offer alternatives. We explained we had asked the waiter and ordered to which the waitress huffed and said we could stay and stormed off. The food arrived and the chicken schnitzel was hard as a rock and one of the coffees never arrived. We observed the waiters walking around searching for people with drinks, there was no system and one lady next to us was rudely told off for drinking the wrong coffee when hers arrived as she had already been given someone else’s. The place was a shambles and the customer service is seriously appalling.

Defs order Shakshouka:) Won't let u down. Tomato sauce is very tick and yummy, go match with the half cooked egg! The bekery is yummy too. A bit far from Bondi Beach but it's easier to get here by a car and you'll find a spot to park!

Why I didn’t come here earlier? It’s been in my bookmarks for long and every time i just skipped it. Finally today i went and got an indoor table. I’m not tomato and bagel lover but I love them so much. The combination between them was just fantastic! Would definitely come back for lunch menus as I wasn’t to try their lamb dish.
Emily
I ordered the shakshuka this morning and it was the best breakfast that I have had in a while. I highly recommend this dish! The cafe in Bondi is also lovely. Thank you Shuk!

Of the two SHUK outlets I've visited, this one takes the cake.

The Sabich Bowl is insanely delicious, full of flavour and great presentation. The broken falafel was a new way of presenting a falafel which I found a simple yet clever change. I also really liked the pickled carrots which gave a bit of sweetness to the savoury dish. Haven't seen teff on the menu before so was curious to try the Teff Pancake. Pancakes were quite sweet on their own as they were soaked in maple syrup but when you combine the ricotta and the fruit with the pancake, it balances out perfectly.

Also had Lemon and Ginger Tea which was served in a large pot with loose leaves. Smelled and tasted divine.

If you'd like to read more of my reviews, please check out my zomato page and visit @cynthiaeats_ on Instagram for more photos!

My thanks to SHUK North Bondi for the invite.

Although the food is really “Middle Eastern” as opposed to “Israeli”, the food itself is still great and reminiscent of me traveling through the Middle East albeit with some slight changes. Staff were wonderful and great with seating in very congested time slot

Superb dining!!! We ordered baked eggs with the slow cooked lambbb just amazing !!! The coffee was pretty sweet also :) the cafe was so busy but the food was arrived ina timely manner - could not fault this place

Food is always delicious here - a great brunch spot. A little bit away from the crowded beach, and definitely no view - this spot was the local corner store for many years before the team at Shuk moved in. However, there's always a buzzing atmosphere, dogs are welcomed at the outside dining areas and well looked after with dishes of water. Service can be slow and bookings done in a rather haphazard manner, and a couple of staff members tend to get quite sharp when they're busy, but overall a great experience every time.

Great dining experience! Will definitely be coming back!! Food is delicious. Would recommend to all my friends. I will be coming back over the weekend

Have given this place a 2 atleast because the food is great
The Shakshuka here is probably the best in all of Sydney. However the real reason I've only given a 2 is because of their terrible customer service. I'm not sure if it because of my Asian nationality and the cafe being in a predominately caucasian demographic, upon walking in we did not receive a single greeting. All we had was the girl at the counter who pointed to the table for us to go sit, not even a hi or welcome or smile. We shook it off anyways and went to go sit. We sat for maybe 5 minutes and no one brought over a menu or bottle of water like they did for the other customers. My boyfriend had to go up himself and collect the menu. While we were eating there were many other customers (European or caucasian) who were smiled at and treated nicely. We felt very unwelcome and I do believe all the staff members couldve done much better in being less racist. I thought about returning because of how delicious the food was but then again I'd rather find another cafe that offers the same quality and taste of food but has atleast a bit of respect for people of all cultures.

Very Delicious! Love the food and ambience. My favourite is their healthy teff pancake, green shakshouka with lamb, and the beef kofta pita bread.
Definitely will come back to try their chef’s special of eggplant and stacitella shaksuka.
Staff were friendly, and food were quickly served.
Price is reasonable compared to the others in Bondi.

Based on my first visit months ago (first photo) this place would have been a 4 or 5, but I went last weekend (photo 2) and the quality and size has decreased which was such a shame! I ordered the same thing and as you can see it was bigger and came with fresh olives etc whereas last weekend it was barely enough to fill me up and had no fresh olives like on the menu just baked ones which tasted really weird. Also we arrived at 10.50 and didn’t get food until 12.20, so definitely go earlier in the day it’s a long wait! Coffee was really good though.

Talk about a chilled place with good food! Found this place on the corner in Bondi. Defiantly was eager to try the famous shakahuka dish. Never tried it before but I was really impressed.

I added halloumi in mine and the other dish was added chorizo and halloumi. Defiantly filling that’s for sure! Looking at the plate when it first comes you defiantly think ( this isnt gong to fill me up) WELL SURPRISE IT DOES, especially when you eat it with the bread that soaks up all the juices.... the end.

Wait time was a bit on a long side, it was close to over 30mins, I did go on a Sunday about 12pm/1pm. Parking wasn’t a issue, heaps of street parking. There are some blind spots of the cafe where it’s hard to get wait staffs attention, but they do once in a while do there rounds to hopefully flag one down.

Defiantly would recommend this place. Especially in the warmer months to sit out in the sun and enjoy the weather with awesome food.

Nice weather when I visited Shuk, so we grab a table on the street.

We ordered the Shakshuka with chorizo and Sourdough. The sourdough is crunchy. As everyone recommended. It is great but not the reason you would like to come back. However, we also ordered the Hummus w’ lamb. Lamb is not my favourite dish, but it was pretty delicious. The lamb mixture over the smooth hummus are good matching with pita. The hummus is rich and creamy. This dish may surprise you. I enjoy this dish until last bite.

I somehow miss the lamb when I returned home. Shuk is worth visiting again.
Maia
Busy little joint, sat next to some guys talking about how uncomfortable Ferrari’s were... apart from that the Eggs were like velvet. Bread, soft like it should be. Flavours were unreal. Meals were out quick and all the workers were in good moods. Wish I could hang out here all day.
Evelyn Zhang
Shuk is a homely cafe in Bondi and is slightly far from the beach but easily accesible by car or bus. Ordered the shakshuka with chorizo due to its popularity and was not let down. The eggs were perfectly runny and the tomato sauce was really good. The bread was crunchy, so the texture balanced the rest of the dish. The staff were very welcoming and attentive. I definitely recommend this for any shakshuka cravings.

Favourite new breakfast spot! Amazing food, great service, great vibe. After coming for the first time I came back twice more that same week, and will continue to do so!

Good menu with fantastic options. Always friendly and food is delicious. Highly recommend the pancakes and the best hot porridge in Sydney, so I think 😉 . Always guaranteed a good coffee. Worth visiting for sure.

If you're looking for great shakshuka look no further than Shuk!
People come from near and far just to try it and believe us you won't be disappointed by it!
While the other dishes are good as well, it can get a little pricey, but for the shakshuka it is worth it.

Shuk is an Israeli-inspired cafe which is popular for their renditions of Middle-Eastern breakfasts. Housed in the back streets at North Bondi, the cafe is brimming with hungry eaters and offers a far more interesting brunch option than those cafes selling some boring XX on sourdough.

I started my day with a flat white. The flat white was milkier than how it should be. The higher proportion of milk than espresso made it resembles a latte more than a flat white. The main, the shakshuka, served with tomato, capsicum, onions and other spices, was considerably smoother and more flavorful. The onions and capsicum brought out the best of the sizzling eggs and tomatoes by breaking the monotony of the tomato-based sauce and offering a crunchy texture.

This place is a great gem in Bondi! The food is quite delicious and the coffee is nice. I am a regular, maybe not the best spender as I normally get t/a but I love to start my day with the best almond chocolate croissant in Bondi! Today thou was a bit unlucky for me as I felt unwelcome and I have been rushed away from the premises. I was waiting for my coffee when a nice couple started asking me about my dog. Their two pooches started to bark towards mine, and mine responded.... All the noise has been limited to maybe 30 seconds? Well, truth is I was already embarrassed and willing to move away from the outside dining area not to disturb the other patrons. The manager came to me pretty much telling me to wait for my coffee far away, and that he would deliver it there for me. Although I understand the concern, I have been escorted to the local bus stop and had to wait for my coffee sitting on the bus bench, while everyone was looking at me.
I felt quite bad, especially cause there was no need to escort me out like I am some kind of thief. How embarrassing.

I got the message, that I am not particularly welcome hopefully from now on I will get brekkie that taste little less, but served with a hint of humanity.

The baked eggs are the best I've ever had. It is worth the drive out to Bondi for these eggs, that good! The sauce was amazing and made the dish, ask for more bread for the sauce!

I've been here numerous times and always been extremely happy with the food. I will continue to go back for fine food and great service, bakery goods and coffee.

very good location. great staff and service. the food was very flavoursome. love all the middle eastern and israeli flavours. good menu, lots of good options. the only complain i would have even though I will certainly go back is that the portions were quite small and we ended up with a third order for two people.

5* food, always consistent. Kitchen deliver and work hard. Friendly wait team. Beautiful venue inside and out, sitting in the back garden on a sunny day is a must!

This is one of the BEST cafes I've ever been to. The food here is delicious (even though I ordered a plain bagel with some butter) and the coffee here is incredible.

I was here on Tuesday for a meeting and decided to have a quick snack here. The bagel I had was super crispy and had a generous amount of sesame seeds on it. One word: YUM. Even though I had it plain with butter, it was super tasty and enjoyable to eat. I then had a soy cappuccino, and omg I was over the moon by the coffee art and the amount of flavour that came through.

I moved tables cause the meeting got shifted outside and because it was raining the night before, some pigeons flew off the tent thing I was sitting under and the water from it went on me - I got absolutely drenched. The customer service here went above and beyond as the wait staff profusely apologised for the incident and in return, I scored another coffee for FREE (trust me, I was very reluctant but they insisted).

So happy I got to try this cafe because I rarely ever go to Bondi. I definitely will come back - the rest of their menu looks amazing. Top quality coffee and service - what more could you ask for?

Shuk is a very well presented restaurant with a great menu which has reasonable prices. My friend and I tried the hummus, halloumi and falafel for Dinner!!! YAAAMM!!! Booked in for the vegan degustation on Wednesday night, can't wait!!
Ken Lowe
A great sunny corner with lots of outdoor tables , dog friendly . Tried the Hummus and it was creamy and rich in taste , good coffee and fresh breads that are baked daily on site .
My friend had their classic shakshuka and said it was great

Best vegan I had in a long time. Menu is very colorful and taste of heaven.every dish was perfect ! Will be coming back again. I hope these guys will continue the vegan night!!!
Emma Freebairn
Tried the Shuk vegan degustation for the second time on Wednesday (the set menu was all new for May) and I didn't think it could be be any better than the first time visit however I was wrong... The flavours were insane and I still can't believe it was all made without any meat, dairy fish, animal products. So bloody delicious!
Going back in two Wednesday's plan. x
A.theresa.l
Quite possibly the worst "degustation" experience of my life. Decadent and intimate ambiance to the restaurant. Service from staff was okay. However that's pretty much where it ends. A group of us had visited the other night to give the vegan degustation a try and the food was sub par. Definitely was not worth the price. Entree sized dishes TO SHARE (own meal not included) for $50 a head is a total rip off. Do not recommend. Will not be back!

Been to Shuk twice now and both times the food has been great. Love the relaxed feel of this North Bondi cafe with all the action of the beach just a quick walk down the road. Who knew the local council would allow such a thriving cafe in the middle of the suburb! I'd love to see more of this sort of thing happening throughout Sydney! Had the fall of the bone delicious lamb w aioli,!mustard, pickled zucchini and spinach on a tasty Turkish bun and of course their famous Shukshuka! Great coffee too. Am looking forward to going to one of their Wednesday night vegan banquets in the future! BTW, grab a gluten free sprouted bread or a pastry from their bakery as you head out the door!

I had the hummus with slow cooked lamb and oh lord it was everything I hoped it would be. Meaty, hummus-y (I love hummus so much, especially freshly made hummus - I don't know if it was homemade or something but it tasted so good and better than the stuff you buy from woollies, which I also eat lol). So decadent. The Turkish bread was delicious too, slightly crisp and toasted but soft and warm on the inside. I think the menu says it comes with pita but this Turkish bread was so much better. The pickles and olives balance out the richness with something tart, so good. I was raving about this for the next few days, I love meat and hummus and bread and pickles. So if you love these things you'll love this meal. Also had a fresh coconut and tried to eat the inside as well, so refreshing on that hot day.

Overall my meal was really good and so satisfying. The only thing I'd mention that brought my overall rating down was the service. When we arrived the sign said to wait to be seated, and a waitress saw us and continued to serve other people and ignore us. She could've at least smiled and made a gesture that said she'd be with us in a minute. The other waiters were fine.

Food was AMAZING.

We went for the vegan degustation which is a special that Shuk have going on for March (vegan month) every Wednesday. Unfortunately for this reason, this week is the last week, but I really hope they add some of these dishes to their regular menu because they were incredible. Some may already be available, I’m not sure.

For only $50pp we were treated to an absolute feast.

A passionfruit shot (no alcohol) was given to us on arrival, which worked up my appetite and I was ready for what was to come!

There were three entrees, and already at number 1, we were spoiled rotten. Some home-baked breads, pickles, and delightful dips. Hummus and beans were really to my taste, thoroughly enjoyed them. I thought the pickles, especially cauliflower, were a fantastic accompaniment and the whole time was wishing they would give us more. 😍😅😍

Falafels and king oyster “scallops” followed, and I have to say the “scallops” were such a creative idea! Could hardly tell the difference visually, and they had managed to get the texture very close as well. Obviously it did taste different, I mean it was still a mushroom, but it didn’t matter as it was executed so well.

Then we had some citrus marinated vegetables which was pretty standard, just a zingy salad of some sort. But it did go well with the mains.

There was a beetroot main and mushrooms main with kimchi. Yay for kimchi. Makes everything better. They were both pretty satisfying but I did prefer the entrees as a whole.

I’ve never been one to think the best is yet to come after mains, because desserts are just not that exciting for me. On the menu it said there was a dessert tasting board so I had no idea what was on offer. We were first served up a tiny glass of soft custardy goodness with crunch on top. I did not expect it to be THAT good. I wolfed it down and really wanted more, and this seriously NEVER happens when it comes to dessert. Then came a pretty plate with a raspberry and dark chocolate(?) combo. It was slightly sour and bitter, but for those who enjoy this type of dessert, will go crazy for this. It was actually pretty good and I finished my portion which is not common for something with these flavours.

Consistency is key, and Shuk consistently delivers healthy and fresh food, great coffee and customer service. They have mastered organisation and it shows. As a regular, I've sampled most of the menu, my personal favourites are the pumpkin and quinoa salad with falafel, the pistachio salmon and the famous shakshuka of course.
Issac_eatsalot
Was an amazing meal! Staff were very friendly and the high quality product they prepare is serve (bake their own breads) is amazing. Really loved the TEFF pancakes but in saying that the Shukshuka was good too.
Very Hungry Caterpillar
Both my friend and I had either a frozen avocado or one that has gone off in our salad. The "fresh" green juice had something odd about the taste, again frozen avo perhaps.

Had been served by at least 6 different staff, each having no idea about my order and whereabouts of food or a bill.

I left stressed our by the entire experience and will never go back.
Isabella Eats
The great part of this place is the bread. If you're someone who's not afraid of carbs, go here. The shakshuka is great but the hummus bowl is to die for. Be sure to pick up a loaf on your way out!

When my MIL was living just behind this place for many years, we never visited but once she had moved and I wanted a new place to visit with my son and friends, we decided to check this place out.

Luckily i booked as at 11am on a Saturday morning it was packed with queues outside. Once we were seated, they were quick to take our order and the wait for the food wasn't long. But the noise level inside is high so it made it difficult to talk without yelling across the table.

I enjoyed my dish (the cured) but was still a bit hungry as my dish was light and I was starving, so I happily devoured my sons sourdough which he didn't want. I tried my husband's lamb shakshuka which was tasty with tender meat. My friends loved their green shakshuka with lamb and chicken schnitzel sandwich. We also shared the chips and I also tried their chocolate croissant afterwards.

Service was friendly and when it was 11.30 the place was so much quieter! I'm glad we got to try this place and wouldn't mind coming back to try their lunch/dinner options.
Nio Poniatowski
Hands down the best place for breakfast and lunch in Bondi. A mix of classic breakfasts and Middle Eastern Dishes always leave me satisfied. I'm yet to try their dinner selection
The Next Rush
Naturally I had the SHAKSHUKA, but for some odd reason being around all the beach bums ordered the green one. It was nice but had that lingering 'healthy' taste that my non-kale and non-veg body sometimes rejects. The EGGS were baked perfectly though and beautifully runny. I definitely recommend getting some chorizo or any other protein as an extra as it's a little bland on its own for me. The APPLE & CHIA BALL was delicious - sweet sticky with micro chunks of apple inside. Will definitely be back but more likely to stick with the regular shakshuka.
Andrew
This is my new go-to for breakfast. And I love my breakfast
The huge awning protects you from the elements while you hoe in to Israeli inspired flavours
I love the fritters
J M
Stinking hot day, windows wide open. Service was half hearted, wait staff clearly couldn't be bothered to be there.
Overall food was nice, overpriced, but what do you expect for Bondi. Falafels were amazing, tea wasn't very good and coffee was average. Be more likely to keep trying the other places in Bondi before going back.
Chantal
We all ordered the eggs shakshuka. This place doesn't disappoint! It was the best eggs shakshuka I have ever had! I ordered a side of Labne with my breakfast and it was great! The place was busy but we were lucky enough to get a table for 4!!

Amazing Value, Amazing food, amazing service!! I booked Shuk for my birthday brunch, we had the $35 set menu which gave us a taste of the menus best options. I am a vegan and they were more than happy to cater for me and even brought me out a vegan cake. There is also a great kiddy friendly area out the back which made the experience for the mothers even more enjoyable. I will definitely be back for dinner!!

In the heart of North Bondi stands Shuk, the bustling local cafe by morning and an intimate restaurant by night. 'Shuk' means market in Hebrew, and a market it is, full of bustling locals and people from afar to dine in the flavours of Shuk! Street food Thursday is a great way to sample Shuks variety of impressive dishes and explore the flavours from Israel all the way to the USA.

Nutella and jam donut was a cruel joke. Waitress stepped on my foot and didn't even acknowledge it :(. The other food was tasty though so they score a 2/5 from my visit

Came here with my toddler, a friend and two older children for lunch. The service was quite awkward from the beginning with language barriers of the staff making it harder to communicate what we wanted.
The waiters/waitresses were not very friendly and we felt like we were imposing (for example they would say "watch out" i.e. get out of my way, rather than "excuse me").
Once most of our food arrived we waited for another 10 mins for 3 croissants (2 almond, 1 normal) to arrive too - when we asked the waitress about them, she said she had forgotten to tell us but they're out of the almond croissants. When I asked about the other one, she said they'd run out of those too. She wasn't very apologetic about it although my toddler was starving! Thankfully he ate the other food we had spare on the table. Some of the waiters were well trained, but they need to make this more consistent across their staff.
The food was delicious however and the outdoor play area is a thoughtful service for mothers.

Arrived at shuk for a late lunch. I've been here before for breakfast and it's very popular all the time - normally a wait on the weekend. Less busy than a weekend but many empty tables and for some reason took just as long to get a table. I had to walk around a bit to get the waitresses attention. Once I got seated it also took a while to get a menu and then to take my order. I believe they needed another waitress or waiter on. I almost actually left, but went up to the counter myself and ordered with the nice owner (I think).
The menu is really interesting and really yummy food choices like shakshuka (these are very nice), hummus and breads, slow cooked lamb, bagels, schnitzels and a really nice range of salads. I ordered the roast cauliflower and Beetroot salad with chickpeas, rocket, spinach and tahini. I liked this, except for the pomegranates (which weren't listed in the menu description). I ordered it with lamb which was really nice. I'm marking this down for the front of house service, but food came out quick so chefs were good. The food is really nice, so the review is simply constructive for the wait staff to improve

Had a delicious brunch at Shuk on Monday. Despite being busy we managed to score a table quite quickly and get down to ordering food. I opted for 'the cure'- smoked salmon with sweet potato and quinoa fritters, green leaf salad with a poached egg and dill labna. The fritters were absolutely moreish and excellently complemented all of the other elements of the dish. Perfect for a light and tasty brunch. The baked eggs also looked phenomenal.

The absolute bomb of Sunday breakfasts! Amazing food with a unique flare and fabulous service! We couldn't decide so we ordered wayyyyyy too much (the waitress warned us!) and left feeling fuller than Christmas lunch!
Honest Chuck
Been meaning to come try out Shuk for ages as I am a Bondi local.
The venue looks amazing on the outside and they were quick to seat us however the waitress had very short responses to questions and argued with me that cottage cheese and feta were not cheeses?? Also told me my choice that my choice of sandwich was 'weird''....
Banana milk shake was average, but the Haloumi sandwich was a saving grace.
Nancy
Loved my experience here! And what I loved even more was that they take bookings for all times of the day! I made the great decision to book because when we got there, there was a line of people waiting to be seated. The three of us ordered the red shakshuka and were very happy with our meal! It wasn't too spicy but had enough spice to complement the eggs and tomato salsa. Loved the inclusion of capsicum and onions in this salsa too. I also ordered a homemade lemonade. It could have probably done with some ice as it got warm very quickly. I thought pricing was decent. $16 for a shakshuka unless you want to add extras. The service was friendly also. There was a little bit of a wait but it was reasonable, especially that they were very busy.

The food was incredible! The teff pancake was delicious and nutty & they didn't skimp on the syrup (which I hate). Also the Israeli breakfast had the best labne ever and the hummus was some of the best I've had! Staff were friendly and attentive & the layout is lovely. Highly recommend.

{ _anne_with_an_e // review }
With their own take on traditional breakfast meals, like Teff Pancakes, Israeli Breakfast, and Shakshuka, they do things delightfully different here.

I ordered the Israeli breakfast for $21, and what you receive is an assortment of 2 eggs of your choice (I opted for scrambled), Israeli salad, olives, labn’e, butter, house jam, avocado and yoghurt with granola. I enjoyed the variety, with my favourite element being their yoghurt with granola. The huge tray looks deceiving, but I managed to finish the dish (excluding the butter and jam).

I also had a taste of the their slow cooked lamb as an additional side with the Green Shakshuka, and the lamb was super tender and flavoursome - I know what I’ll be ordering next time! Their Fattoush salad was nice and fresh, but nothing to write home about.

Aesthetically the place is inviting, well laid out, and has plenty of seating indoors and outdoors (out in front and in the ‘backyard’). Despite all the seating arrangements, this place was packed at noon on a Sunday. The wait in line was only 10 minutes, and what I thought was very thoughtful, is they were giving cups of water to those waiting outside, as it was getting rather warm.

Once seated our orders were taken quickly and with ease, however it was about a 50 minute wait until we received our dishes. Whilst service was friendly, there were no real updates on our food, so I'm assuming long waits here are the norm during weekends.

Worth trying // Israeli breakfast, slow cooked lamb
Pros // large seating area, quality food, substantial servings, relaxed vibe
Cons // long wait for food, gets really busy

Food: 4/5
Ambience: 4.5/5
Service: 4/5

FOOD TYPE
Although Shuk’s offerings are described as Israeli/Mediterranean on their website, the dinner menu seemed more like modern Australian to me, with a small selection of only five main courses: lamb, beef, chicken, trout and gnocchi.

FOOD QUALITY
Although we were a little disappointed at first with the limited number of choices, once the food made its appearance, we couldn’t have been happier. Everything we ordered was fresh, tasty and brimming with flavours. Three of us dined and we started with a shared serve of pita bread with almond dukkah and olives ($7). The dukkah is a dip or an oily paste made of crunched peanuts. We should have ordered two serves though, as one small piece of pita bread to scoop up all that dukkah wasn’t enough. For mains we chose a selection of dishes to share including two lamb ($32 each), haloumi ($14), and a couple of salads at $8 each and a serve of chat potatoes ($8). My lamb was beautifully well cooked, just the way I like it, leaving it tender and succulent but not burnt and with no sacrificing on taste or flavour. It was finely cut into long thin strips, making it easy to eat and digest and it came with tabouli and a tangy white radish sauce: an original and suitable complement to the meat. My wife’s haloumi was firm and salty and the accompanying salads and greens were refreshing and nutritious. I especially liked the crushed nuts that were sprinkled on our shaved fennel. The lettuce and tomato salad was simply presented but spiced up with a sharp blue cheese dressing. And the potatoes were warm and soft and cooked to just the right texture. Everything is brought to the table piping hot from the ovens and served in stylish black or white crockery. No need for dessert after that lot but there are some if you’re still hungry.

ATMOSPHERE
The ambience is casual and relaxed. It’s perfect for a summer’s eve with the windows and doors flung wide open, allowing the gentle sea breezes to waft in. There’s indoor and outdoor seating: We choose to sit inside but it was cool and pleasant. The décor is modern, bright and inviting, with plain wooden furniture, tiled floors, low hanging lamps and whitewashed walls decorated with displays on shelves. Everyone seemed to be having a good time and the place was abuzz with energy and atmosphere.

SERVICE
The all-female complement of professional and well trained waitresses were polite, attentive and helpful. They’re neatly attired in smart black uniforms and from the moment we set foot in the place we were made to feel welcome. Our booked table was ready and waiting for us. Orders were quickly taken and the food came out promptly and in the correct order. There was just enough time between courses to allow you to kick back and relax for a few minutes but no long tedious wait for the main courses. And because there were enough waitresses on duty - maybe four or five - to deal with the crowds, the whole place just hummed like a well-oiled machine. Full marks to the owners for not stinting on this important aspect of restaurant management. No-one is left waiting or neglected.

COMFORT
Our tables was large enough to fit all the dishes, although there were only three of us. Maybe with a fourth it would have been a bit of a struggle. Chairs were firm but comfortable.

MENU
The menu is a simple A4 sheet of white paper, which kept flying off the table and had to be held down with the salt and pepper shakers! Perhaps something firmer and heavier might be more practical, especially with the breezes blowing in the way they do. The limited choices does make ordering simple and quick. The drinks menu is on laminated loose leaf sheets attached to a clipboard, also not a great idea though as the pages kept slipping out.

TOILETS
There are two toilets out the back that are reasonably clean and well-provisioned, except that there’s no signs inside to indicate where they are, so you’ll need to ask.

ACOUSTICS
The night we dined, the place was near full and with no carpets or noise absorbers, and tables packed close together it was hellishly noisy, making conversation difficult. I don’t know why so many otherwise fine restaurants seem to ignore this basic aspect of guest comfort. Eating out is an opportunity to enjoy social interaction with friends and family, and being able to converse is part of that experience. But in a place like Shuk on a Sat night, you can forget it, unless you’re prepared to shout! I suggest that these guys try laying some carpet or get an acoustics engineer in to see what can be done to improve the sound quality on a busy night.

COST
With our 25% Ent Book voucher (up to a generous max of $35) we paid a reasonable $88 and that included a single bottle of Coopers Pale Ale, a single entrée, two mains, two salads a side of potato and a haloumi dish.

BOOKING
According to their website, they’re only open for dinner on Thurs, Fri and Sat nights. The Sat night that we dined it was about 80% full, so booking would definitely be the prudent thing to do, as this place is clearly a favourite of the locals.

PARKING/ACCESS
Shuk sits all on its own, in splendid isolation in an obscure part of North Bondi, on the corner of Mitchell St and Murriverie Road. There isn’t another restaurant or entertainment spot in sight. So even though Bondi is notoriously difficult for parking, we were easily able to get an unrestricted spot about 500m up the street in Murriverie Rd.

SUMMARY
Shuk is a winner on most levels. Food is outstanding, service is friendly and efficient and the ambience is light, bright and airy. Toilets are clean and well stocked and parking is a breeze. But if they really want to get to a higher level of customer enjoyment and satisfaction, they ought to do something to improve the acoustics.

Best brekkie in bondi! Ingredients are fresh, service and coffee are good. Definitely recommended! Have been here several times and it's always busy but the food quality is consistent.

The food here is mouthwatering! Every time I go I get something new because I want to try everything!! The shakshuka is a must get! Or the green one as well!
ThatFoodDude.
I had the shakshuka with chorizo and I think it was the best I've ever had (and trust me, I've had a few). That thick, rich tomato sauce was on point. My girlfriend had the green shakshuka and also loved it. All round great vibe and good service. We'll be back!

Great breakfast spot in North Bondi, just out in the middle of a neighborhood. Both of the Shakshukas are excellent as well as the lamb w/hummas if you're looking for something a little heavier.
Sweetandyummie
Delicious food and a wonderful location. Customer service is very attentive - try to get there early as weekend lunch is very busy. i highly recommend the Shakshuka - its very yummy.

The Israeli breakfast here is really good - a smorgasbord of breakfast dishes that is almost impossible to finish, The service is friendly if a little random at times.
Nourishment Bowl
Love this place! Whether it's for a weekend breakfast or or a Friday night dinner this place always provides the goods. The eggs are great for breaky and every dish on the dinner menu I would order you again.

Nice atmosphere, about 10min walk from main strip at Bondi beach. Great mocha. Decent green shakshuka though not the best as I found it a little dry. The slow cooked lamb sandwich however was sensational. Pillowy soft bun and the most tender pulled meat imaginable. The best I've ever had.

Stopped off here just after landing in Sydney and it was absolutely perfect for a caffeine fix. Super impressed with the short black. Great coffee.

Delicious food with slow but friendly service. We waited for over 20 minutes before being able to place our order. Glad we waited as it was a nice little spot for breakfast. The hummus and lamb dish is definitely a winner.

Don't waste your time or your money!!. Booked weeks in advance for 6. They put us on the smallest table (squishy for 4). Stools not chairs. Service was terrible. We had to ask three times if we could order. 45mins later we ordered. Food took long time, v average food. By time we finished and asked about dessert we were told kitchen closed!!! 100 dollars each no wine incl and obviously no dessert!! to eat at a bus stop. Uncomfortable, crap service and average food.
Lauren
Beautiful food and amazing service!! As a group of 4, we had an absolute feast and paid $49 per person - you can't beat that in Bondi - and the quality of food was excellent. Please let this place stay BYO!!! We'll definitely be back

My new favourite cafe in Sydney!. LOVE THIS PLACE.
After hearing great reviews I thought I'd give it a go and wasn't disappointed!
The food is UNBELIEVABLE. We shared the salads which were delicious, the hummus and lamb platter is also to die for.
Great friendly service too, I'm already planning to come back next week!

Average middle eastern food. Ordered the special of the day.
it was a small chicken sandwich on Sourdough bread.
The chicken had g9od flavour but the bread was not toasted cold and wet.
it came with a small portion of oily fries.
All of this for 18 AUD. The price was a surprise until I went to pay for the bill, since it was not on the menu.
Is that what you call value for money? NOT!!!
The waiter was good though.
I'm not going back there.
Bits & Bobs. Wonderlaind.
Away from the hustle & bustle of Bondi, lies SHUK, a family-friendly and open cafe in North Bondi. With influences of Greek, Israeli and Lebanese flavours, SHUK is a warm and inviting cafe. They also sell bread, condiments and other goodies so be sure to check them out!

Fresh, beautiful food with an interesting Israeli streak. Downside no poached eggs but everything I've had here gasps been beautiful.

Posted on December 19, 2014 by Feast Wisely Leave a comment If you’d questioned me on Israeli cuisine before my recent dinner at Shuk I’d have been pretty clueless. I’ve never visited Israel and there isn’t an Israeli restaurant in my suburb or neighbouring suburbs. But since late 2013 one suburb that does boast Israeli cuisine is North Bondi. For many years number 2 Mitchell Street North Bondi housed a corner shop. Then one day Yoni Kalfus, a Bondi local and Shuk owner, got the opportunity to convert the corner location into Shuk. When I met Yoni he explained how “Over the last 50 or so years the food in Israel has been shaped by immigrants from over 100 different countries, and so at Shuk we have a diverse menu influenced by Turkish, Middle Eastern, Arabic and Mediterranean cuisine”. In Israel the Shuk is a marketplace with stalls selling spices, clothing, meat, cheeses and more. It’s a place to buy fresh ingredients and to meet with others at one of the many cafes or food stands. This was Yoni’s inspiration for Shuk Bondi – he wants it to be “an open home for locals, who drop in daily for their bread or pastries and stay for breakfast or lunch”. Breakfast is a big draw card at Shuk with all of the usual suspects as well as dishes like the traditional Israeli breakfast or the vegetarian ‘Lady-tradie’ (slow-cooked eggs with labn’e, spinach, lentils and more). Breakfast can also double as brunch because it is served right through to 1pm. From midday choose from a tempting lunch menu as well as a short but satisfying list of all-day dishes like the famous Shuk shakshuka. Dinner at Shuk is reserved to Fridays and Saturdays, and judging by my visit you’d be taking a risk turning up without a booking. Although it was quiet at 6pm just one hour later almost every table was full. Shuk keeps locals coming back for weekend dinners with a seasonal, produce driven menu that changes regularly.
Little Eats Sydney
An Israeli and Mediterranean inspired cafe/bakery/deli in North Bondi with a family-friendly vibe and some of the best Shukshuka in Sydney. The bakery is a key feature with signature loaves baked daily. Sit outside on the sprawling pavement or enjoy the great vibe inside. A great park for toddlers is just nearby.

‘Shuk’ is the Israeli term for marketplace and the newly opened Shuk cafe hopes to bring this vibe to what they offer. It is a cafe, deli and bakery and its large corner position serves as a fantastic meeting spot for locals. As co-owner, Yoni Kalfus says: ”The food we offer is inspired by what we grew up with in Israel, where the cuisine available is one of the largest melting pots on the planet, with food coming from a variety of cultures that migrated to the country from 130 different countries in the past 50 years.
Sir And Mlady Dine Out
Shuk is a multi-faceted place with a bakery, delicatessen, cafe and restaurant all grouped together. As it starts the day as a cafe for breakfasts and your early morning coffee and goes on into morning tea then lunch and on into the afternoon and evening - it's a place that operates long hours - and even longer on the days it's open for dinner.
Does My Bomb Look Big In This
Bagels may have started the ‘Jewish food’ craze but Shuk (meaning marketplace in Hebrew) is where you’ll find a genuine melting pot of traditional and modern Israeli flavours, with some Mediterranean touches thrown in for good measure. Open all day, this bakery-restaurant-pickled food shop is found on a quiet street in North Bondi – surprisingly away from the beach. Of an evening, you can be tempted by Haloumi ($12) served with walnut, honey and coriander seed – a winning combination of flavours

Great eggs, terrible service. 60-60 eggs were lovely, but getting the attention of one of many waiters incredibly difficult, only to have them get out order wrong. Would love to go back for the food, but several bad experiences with service mean that we won't bother.

Worth tryng. Always on the lookout for new cafes to try, read about Shuk in the SMH so we went to Bondi to test it out. Service was good, menu interesting, nice coffee. The food we had was quite tasty and well priced. No problem recommending it to others.

The Best Cafe Food in Bondi. If you ever want to experience the real feel of the North Bondi lifestyle go down and grab a table at Shuk. Each time I've been in Bondi I've just had to go back for more.

I love the homebaked bread and freshly make hummus plate, the perfect light snack in between shopping and the beach. Service was warm, friendly and very attentive to our needs.

Overall a great Bondi cafe experience!

Best Food in Bondi!. The food here is fantastic. Great vibes with a lovely open layout. I have been there for dinner and breakfast and the food was exquisite, and the service was lovely and attentive. They also have amazing bread and coffee. This cafe was exactly what North Bondi needed, you can get a great meal and have good conversation without being in the hustle and bustle of Bondi Beach.
Highly recommended!

Good coffee but.... Not a breakfast or small light menu item that is simple and carb free. Oh and why the obnoxious faced wait staff....geez we've gotten a bit TLV too cool for school.

Breakfast. Beautiful place, very good breakfast and lovely staff.
I heard they are doing dinner as well. Can't wait to try it!

Went last sat night for dinner and what a disaster in terms of their service. From the tables not being organised, wine glasses for 4 when there were 8 of us, a simple request that we needed to ask for menus and when it's all over the roller shutter door clanged down when it was time to leave. An extremely limited and boring menu. Maybe ok for breakfast but would not go their for dinner

We arrived at 10:00am on a Sunday and were immediately seated despite the cafe almost being a capacity. Excellent coffees and delicious shakshuka and hummus plate. Very authentic Middle Eastern (Israeli) food. Deliciously fresh in house baked breads. Bumped into a friend who said second meal here in two days. We will be back.
