Review Sushi St - Bondi

Kasey Kaplan
I had a horrible experience here. Long story short the rolls tasted horrible. Almost as if they were a day or two old. In a polite way I asked the server about this and he said nothing was wrong. It took 30 min to get the next roll. He then said something was wrong with the rice and they had to remake it. He didn't even apologise. The next to rolls did tasted better. I then went to pay and they made me pay for the horrible rolls at the start of the meal we didn't finish. Pretty horrible experience. It's not normal to charge for food when there is a known issue. I'm not going back to this place. I used to love this place and previously gave the review below: I love this place. Definitely try the seared salmon roll -- amazing. The place isn't huge, has seating for about 24 so ppl. I've also had the take away and had no issues. One of my favourite places in Bondi.

Good quality Japanese. Excellent sushi. Best karaage chicken and tasty ramen. Quaint Bondi setting. Definitely worth an informal night out.

Samuel has got to be one of the nicest waiters I’ve ever encountered. Charming service, excellent food, highly recommend.

Being a Bondi local I can’t believe it took me so long to try this fabulous little restaurant! The manger/ owner Jack was absolutely lovely and ensured we had a great evening. The food was amazing, on Jack’s recommendation we had the gyoza, seared salmon sushi roll and dynamite scallops. Absolutely delicious and I can’t wait to go back to try everything else on the menu! The restaurant itself is so cute and has a lovely ambiance. Highly recommend!

Awesome friendly service, delicious fresh food. Happy hour too, everything on menu must be tried.

Sushi was ok. However, stay away from the yakiniku beef. It was terrible. Completely undercooked, chewy as hell, inedible. Staff was friendly and attentive.

Sashimi and nigiris are fresh. Softshell crab was a bit too oily

Such great value. Sushi rolls are delicious. Carpaccio is amazing! If you appreciate authentic Japanese you will really appreciate Sushi Street. I stumbled in for a happy hour and now I find it really hard to justify eating elsewhere. Very friendly humble stuff. Now a weekly staple.

An old regular for my wife & I (when we lived in Vaucluse & Rose Bay). Since moving out of the area (and the birth of our son), we stopped going as they don’t cater for babies or toddlers. The food and Saké is amazing, I recommend the mixed sashimi platter and oysters... and our recent visit (for my birthday) I was happy to see they now have kimchi on the menu! I’m of korean origin, and this is one of the most authentic Asian restaurants I have eaten in in Sydney. Well worth a visit if you’re in Bondi.

So this little joint up the road from the beach is a very cool oasis right in the middle of Bondi. The food is just like the tiny bars and sushi joints you find in back alleys in most cities in JAPAN. Wonderfully fresh, perfectly presented with top shelf Sake. And,, the staff are open friendly and helpful. Two thumbs up for this little place of perfection.

Amazing food... chef Tai S Le is awesome! Also, really good environment and customer service.

It seems this place has changed owners a couple of months ago and they've ruined a few of the signature dishes. My friends who were regulars said their pork gyoza and egg plant dishes not very good. I used to love the Tuna Tataki, but instead of the usual lovely thin melt in your mouth slices of seared and peppered tuna, i had thicker tasteless prices where the sinew caught on your tongue and it was covered in olive oil. Walking past on a Thursday, it's totally empty where it would normally have had plenty of people in it. Every other restaurant is full. So it seems like other patrons are catching on too. I asked if they had a new chef and they said 'new owners'. I understand businesses have to change hands, but why ruin a winning formula and risk going bust. Better get back to how it used to be and quick.

Unbelievably good food for a small, cool, hip restaurant. I come here every chance I get. Nothing is this good on the northside.

Excellent food, nice little restaurant. Ordered two or three plates to share between two of us. Have 3-4 different sakes which I didn't get to seeing as it was lunch...!

*Jasmine's review*
A nice vibe, looks like you were in a restaurant in Japan.

We ordered Gyoza, Kaarage Chicken and a Salmon deluxe sushi roll. The food was very tasty overall. The portion was very generous. The kaarage chicken was served the Japanese way - with a wedge of lemon on the side; it is seasoned well and juicy.

There were heaps of filling in the sushi - very appetising. We will come again for other items on the menu.

So we got there ordered about 6 dishes the first one came after 10 min (the sashimi) then all the rest was delayed in 50-60 min (including the edamame)when we asked why after (45 min )( beacuse the restaurant was not busy at all ) they answered that they had a few deliverys to attend first and that's why our food was delayed most of the food arrived after 50 except one dish that arrived 15 after that and it was the wrong dish ..so there we are waiting agin when it came it was over fried and not very tasty but that's my personal taste.. service was ok food was pretty average for sushi the only good place about this whole experience is that we can sit in the table outside and enjoy the fresh air

The food is pretty good but not amazing. The service though is generally great, particularly if you are served by their regular (blonde) waitress who always makes you feel welcome and frequently checks on patrons. This place is good for a mid week reasonably priced meal. The restaurant is quite small so you can talk without having to yell.

Great sake, presentation of every dish is excellent and tasty

I highly recommend Sake street for its fresh and tasty menu items. The mixed sashimi plate was the best I've had in the area. We will be back!

Perfect!. We've been here a couple of times now and have had a beautiful meal on both occasions. The crisp on the outside and meltingly soft on the inside miso eggplant is divine as is the cooked to perfection pork belly. The only criticism I have is that the salmon was a little over cooked for my taste but other than that everything was superb. The service is spot on and the waiters professional and friendly. My three year old loved all the food too. We will definitely be back.

If you appreciate the basic elements of dining - like eating your dinner at roughly the same time as those you're dining with - then don't go here. My partner and I went to this restaurant on a busy Thursday night in Bondi. This restaurant however was not busy. We ordered a very simple sushi entre which was fine. Mains were ordered too: mine beef udon and chicken teriyaki for my partner. My udon arrived shortly after we finished entre. I started expecting my partner's meal shortly thereafter. We waited, waited, waited (35 minutes by this stage). No word or update from our waitress. We asked the waitress (who was clearly avoiding us) for an update and she told us the kitchen was on it. They clearly weren't. It took a further 30 minutes for a pretty limp chicken teriyaki to saunter from the kitchen. It came with a meager "sorry about that" as it was thumped on the table. Nothing genuine about the apology and for the price this restaurant was rough. Do not waste your time.

Good joint. Really like this palace. Good service, fresh food, good vibes. A great local joint for dropping in on and getting good Japanese. Thanks Sushi St.

Best Sushi in Bondi!. I'm so stoked these guys are here! The food is fresh and healthy just the way sushi should be. Unique and interesting rolls, good value for money, and very kind and welcoming staff. Will be back soon!

Authentic Japanese!!. Since moving from Japan this is the first restaurant that has really captured the taste of Japanese food in the eastern suburbs! The kitchen is run by two Japanese chefs who clearly know their stuff. I would recommend the salmon carpaccio and soft shell crab for starters. the slow cooked pork belly and Ramen soup is perfect for a winter's fill. if you just want something quick and easy go for the sushi rolls, very fresh and melts in your mouth! Certainly try the imported beer Orion, this stuff is too easy to drink!

Disappointed. I paid $14 for 1 x cooked tuna and avo roll! (8pcs)
Highly overrated

Delicious!. I had heard mixed reviews about this place but that was all while it still had the 'train'. Now that has been removed and is a la carte I decided to try with my friend. Firstly, the organic wine was delicious and we had a couple of glasses before even ordering. The teriyaki chicken was perhaps a little bland but everything else was mouth watering good! Sashimi salad, spicy tuna rolls and salmon sushi - yum! But yeah, did I mention the organic wine...?

After returning to my beloved Bondi for the summer, I am all too eager to investigate the new and improved around the familiar haunts. One place that seems to have caught my eye is the growing foodie hub at the top of Hall st. As I live not too far from this precinct of gourmand goodness, I will endeavour to comment on all the surrounding spots.
First on my list was Sushi st, recommended to me by my Japanese friend. I had arranged to meet her on a Sunday afternoon, which had turned uncomfortably warm. My friend was already seated at the train, and had the foresight and delicious presence of mind to order me a cold beer. I shuffled onto my seat as the beer was placed in front of me. It turned out to be a Japanese draft beer called Orion, not to heavy handed, and had the quenching effect of lowering ones feet into a tub full of cool water on a hot day. Half of the beer was gone after the first gulp. My friend was eager to impress on me the merits of the wide selection of treats on offer and set about randomly snatching small coloured plates from the train. Given the position of the seating around the train conversations and shared smiles were being shared by the collection of seated diners, as we at times simultaneously reached for the same plates. This in turn led to the merriment, making it quite a pleasant friendly dining experience. I pensively eyed my Nigiri as it made its way down the back straight, willing it home, hoping for it to avoid the darting hands of my fellow diners. The food was of a high standard, it hadn't warmed or softened in the heat and it cool and freshened the palette before the Wasabi applied its venom. I ordered the sashimi salad from the menu, it took a little time to arrive, but with the warm weather and the amount of customers at the time it was perhaps understandable. This did provide a good interlude to order another cold 'un. I do like a good piece of sashimi, and on a bed of baby spinach sat a good helping of the stuff, here before me sat well presented chunks of Salmon, Tuna and Kingfish. Added to the fish was a generous helping of dressing, which allowed the salad and the sashimi to blend and hold together. The dressing did not suffocate and overpower the flavours of the fish but presented a pause, a moment, to come back to the flavours and texture of the fish. The fish itself seems to have been studiously considered and chosen given its consistency. The beauty of raw fish is that it seems to inhabit a texture somewhere between firm and soft. It has a defined form but weakens and melts in the mouth.
Overall I was pleased with my visit to Sushi st. The service and price are of the surrounding area and I did not encounter anything that distracted me from my enjoyment. The decor has to be noted upon, which has traditional Japanese elements set against a striking contemporary Japanese Manga mural. Kampai

Next week I'm off to Mad Pizza to see if it can top itself.
