foodie: This little restaurant has amazing food so yummy, very authentic Singaporean food, it is a shame they are only open two days but I know that on a Friday that my lunch is going to be something from their great menu. Give this place a try you can eat in or get takeway, the staff are really nice as well
Beautiful good food at a great price. Not easy to find a place that has dishes under $10 and have a good standard. Menu covers many of the all time classic Singapore/Malaysian dishes. I have had the honor or sampling each dish and what else can I say? It brings back the wholesome flavor sensation back home in a big kinda way. Those that may be skeptics may want to pop in and sample their regular Laksa or even their Geylang beef hor fan. Another must try dish is their Carrot cake. Chilli lovers may want to also take home a bottle for $5. Their weekly specials are a great idea as it brings something new to try each visit. My only gripe is that they are only open Friday's and Saturdays currently for dine in or take away.
One of the very very best Singaporean eateries in Melbourne serving up very authentic, and delicious Singaporean food. Came here with 3 other Singaporean friends, and we proceeded to literally order the ENTIRE menu including the specials of the day (because we could not decide what we wanted to get!). Of course, it took us a very long time to finish eating the food, but by golly it was yummy!
Very reasonable priced, friendly service! Food is rather Singaporean more so than Malaysian though, especially pan mee (their chilli sauce isn't the usual one that goes with pan mee; noodles aren't freshly made). Nevertheless, great value for money.
Attention Singaporeans, if you crave for a little of home look no further. Their laksa here is divine. Not ur standard nyonya laksa, proper Singaporean street style. Consistent, homemade paste.
Tasty and authentic! A little hidden gem shown to us by our good friends who are from Singapore/Malaysia. Definitely will come back for more.
Went there first time today. We tried three noodle dishes. On average, all were worth it if you wanna go to Boronia from Doncaster East. I didn't taste any msg, so that's a plus for the health-consious. Service was super. Prices very reasonable. All dish under $10 each.
23 July: Had my favourite bak chor mee pok. Didn't disappoint. The free Chinese tea was poor though.
Amazing authentic Singaporean food. Especially love the Hokkien Mee - come when it's less busy, around lunchtime, and it can't be beat. Friendly staff.
Amazing food - everytime I've been it's been excellent. I'd recommend and have been told from family who recently visited Singapore it's just as good as eating over there.
A small and cosy cafe, welcoming atmosphere and good service. We had hainanese beef noodles (not on the menu - might not be always available) , hokkien mee and bak chor mee. Has all the Singapore flavors I miss. I enjoyed the beef noodles especially, the taste is true local fare.
The menu provides a good selection of Singaporean dishes. I tried the Katong laksa, which I quite enjoyed. This style of laksa is quite different from the Malaysian laksa I usually have in Melbourne.
We also tried a few fried noodle dishes and the nasi lemak. I particularly liked the Singaporean hokkien noodle dish.
Acav may be back.
Singaporean food is something that is not easily found in Melbourne, and it's a cuisine that I didn't know much about either, until I visited the country myself earlier this year. Though it was only a short trip, I managed to hit up a few restaurants, and hawker centres of course, where the real fun is. I had some of the most interesting and delicious food in Singapore, and have been craving it ever since. After some research, I came across Bert's Cafe, a small family restaurant with a short, but promising menu.
Authentic Singaporean cuisine.
Fried carrot cake and bak chor mee pok are my favourite dishes.
Staff are friendly and fairly busy, running between the kitchen and the dining area.
Great little family business.
Cheap and tasty.
Good times. You will enjoy :-)
Authentic singaporean food. No idea what the others are complaining about. We had the chee kueh and enjoyed it, it had the right texture and taste. The chicken rice was the best we had after oriental wok in the city closed down. Chicken was very tender and juicy and serving size was decent. Lor Mee was very very good and we both enjoyed it even though we weren't even craving it! Sago with gula melaka was extremely tasty filled with coconut milk n gula melaka. Barley drink was very thick and delicious. We def will be back.
***Update 12/03/2016***
While I come to Bert's fairly regularly, I simply had to share my recent meal here. Albert puts on specials every weekend and this week was Punggol mee goreng. Really, really excellent. It's now the best mee goreng I've had. Thick, tomatoey, sweetish, tangy sauce and not very oily. Perfect wok flavour too. It also had generous prawns, fishcake and squid. The flavour was so much cleaner and engaging than others I'd had before it. He said he'd learned it from a chef in Punggol in Singapore where this Chinese version of mee goreng was first developed. I'm trying to convince him to keep it on the main menu as a regular dish!
A little place of authenticity in the boring surrounds. One must remember that it is VERY hard to find decent Singaporean cuisine in Melbourne, possibly all over Australia, unless you head off to Perth or Sydney. Before passing judgement on this restaurant based on the Urbanspoon reviews, it must also be considered that a large quantity of the reviews made about this restaurant are from Singaporeans and Malaysians who expect the food to be as good as it is in Singapore itself. This is far too much to expect in Australia, or anywhere else in the world. I have been to and stayed in Singapore for many long periods, and have eaten some of the best food that can be found there. Let me tell you that Bert's is the only place that can remind me well of my second home. Yes, some of the authentic ingredients cannot be found here in Australia, and some of those that can be found, aren't quite the same or as fresh, but Bert plies his trade with the best of his ability. As a small business in a far area, he does well to make the most authentic Singaporean food to be found for a long, long way. Signature dishes are: Fried Hokkien prawn noodle (only sold at a few restaurants around melbourne), Chwee Kueh (a salty version, but also rare), Bak chor mee, fried carrot cake (done white or brown) and nonya fried rice. Go on a Friday or Saturday night for dinner for access to the specials. Bert is very friendly and accommodating, he loves getting to know all of his customers.
So far I've tried the mee goreng, tauhu goreng, geylang beef horfun, dry beef horfun, black and white chye tow kway, meepok. Food is reasonably priced and are super good. Really taste like home. The uncle is very friendly. Abit far from the city but for such authentic singapore food I'd gladly drive there. The black chye tow kway is super good and value for money.
Contrary to the review made by "The Rock" previously, i think your tastebuds are probably dying because the food here is in fact very underrated.
It has been a long and tiring journey to find good and authentic Singaporean Cuisine in Melbourne. But that journey ended the day I stepped into Bert's.
2 thumbs up for the very humble pricing, friendly staff and the best Singaporean dishes Melbourne has to offer.
Great Makan. B1, You've done it again.
Great food,great company....see you soon....
Authentic Singapore flavours. Heard about this cafe serving SIngapore food on weekends - a strong drawcard for any Singaporean living in Melbourne. However when we arrived at 6 pm on Saturday evening we were informed that all tables had been booked. This was frustrating as we had phoned the cafe during the week and wanted to make a reservation. We were told that it was not necessary since we were coming at 6 pm. A disappointing start as we had intended to make a reservation. Tip: make sure that you make a reservation especially if you are keen on the Singapore dishes.
Anyway we decided on takeaways as one of my friends lived nearby. We ordered two of the specials for that evening - Katong laksa and Kway Chap. We also ordered fried chai tow kueh - both the black and white versions. Lastly we ordered the hokkien prawn mee and the Geylang beef noodles.
The Katong laksa had the flavour that I was used to in Singapore. The hokkien prawn mee was the dry version but everyone agreed that it was good enough. The only disappoinment was the "black" chai tow kueh which was under-flavoured. I would also recoemmend the Geylang beef noodles.
Small cafe serving authentic Singapore food. Delicious and reasonable in pricing. Unfortunately the opening hours are rather short.
Beef hor fun and nasi lemak were delicious! Seating and open hours are quite limited.
Authentic Singapore street food. Great for Singaporeans who missed Singapore foods like Hokkien Prawn Noodle, Char Kway Teow, Chwee Kueh etc.
Was there on Saturday, awesome food, worth the drive.
Must go again!!!!
Good food, great atmosphere and excellent service!!!
Thank you, Bert. Food reminds me of mum's cooking:)
