Review Tien Dat Restaurant - Box Hill

Ian Woodruff
OK VIETNAMESE RESTAURANT IN BOX HILL The cafe is modern and has comfortable seating. The service is efficient but there is no warmth at all in the service :( That wouldn't matter too much if the price was low - but its not. $19 for a bowl of pho that was just OK. To be fair, I didn't try other dishes (apart from the tofu rice paper roll). Peopel with mobility issues will be finer once inside as its all on one even floor but they may have a bit of trouble negotiating the fairly heavy and tight entry door.

This place looks fancy for a Vietnamese restaurant, which usually is quite modest and basic looking. The price on the menu isnt cheap, maybe due to the decor. I had their broken rice pork chop with fried egg which was nice. But then I never had anywhere of this dish that is bad. But overall happy with portion and taste.

Nice place to go to sate your Vietnamese cravings, the food was mostly well balanced and came out in a timely fashion. The restaurant has a nice layout and is well spaced out.

Bun Bo Hue, Grilled lemongrass chicken on rice and Pad Siew were excellent choices for today's lunch. So tasty.

A great dining experience with a large menu and plenty of choice. The shaken beef (brown butter sauce) was very tender though the tomato rice was a little too salty. We enjoyed the homemade lemonade drink and Hanoi spring rolls as well. Waitresses were attentive and the interior was nice and modern too. I selected the restaurant based on the range of gluten free mains, however when it came to dessert there were unfortunately no suitable GF choices. The deep fried ice cream was overfried and tasted burnt, when cut into the ice cream was also mostly melted while normally it stays frozen inside.

Portion is too small, soup is too salty, and too oily. A lot of room to improve. Décor was nice , staff was attentive, but lack of experience.

Always loved the food here. Been coming for years. Reasonably priced too.
Campbell Docherty
Was nice food. We had the spring rolls with the lettuce and Noodles and mint which you roll up yourself. Then had the Ted Curry with Chicken and Roti bread. They have 2 sittings and are quite strict with seating times to have as much turnover as possible. Took a while to get served to start with. Obviously very popular. Would visit again and try another dish.

The stuff was friendly and always asking if everything was good. They forgot to bring water and we had to ask for it after we finished our meal. I didn't think the service was that fast as other people mentioned. The food was fresh and good but not amazing.we had the shredded pork wraps (appetiser-tasteless), the roast pork with rice (good), the honey pork (well cooked, crispy and sweet) and the spicy pork (really good-highly recommend). big portions. Good value for money.

We attended your venue last night, to say it was disappointing is being to kind. We found a slug in our lettuce cup. We asked for a glass to be replaced as it was cracked and this was replaced with another cracked glass. We returned several dishes as they were not up to standard, and they charged us for the dishes that were returned. We were treated poorly, and we will never recommend or visit your premises again.

This place is the best of the best. The food is always spectacular. You simply can't go wrong eating here.

We've been going there on a regular basis now for 10 to 15 years . The food is fresh, very tasty and reasonably priced. We've been comparing it to other Asian restaurants and nobody comes close! Our favourites: Duck rolls, lemon grass beef salad, Crispy duck, spicy squid, Vietnamese crepe and much more....

Fantastic food at really reasonable prices in an elegant setting with great service. We were there a busy Friday night and couldn’t fault it. Will be back soon.

Fabulous remodel of the interior both up and downstairs. Food is still great - thank you and most of the staff are old hands so service is very good - as it was before the reno. Very happy me!
Jenny Falahey
Food was delicious as always. The staff were friendly and the renovations are fantastic.
Scott Green
Good service , great food , but cramped .Needs a partition between door & tables.
Helen McNicol
We have been many times to Tien Dat in the past...but we will not be coming again. We are over being hurried and shoved out the door simply so you can get more bums on seats. It's really not that good. Suggest you take on feedback as lots of friends feel the same way!

Group of 7 visited to celebrate a birthday. Fresh food friendly staff and reasonable price. Enjoyed by all.

Always enjoy eating at Tien Dat: fresh, flavoursome and filling choices. Friendly staff and efficient service. If you're a person hard of hearing, the noise level might be too high.

Great food Lots of gluten free Friendly staff

Quality establishment, best Vietnamese in the Eastern Suburbs.

Have been a patron for 16 years, my most favourite Resturant in Melbourne " Fresh , Fast and Delicious " a must for everyone who loves Vietnamese food !!

Have been going to this restaurant for quite and few years now and it never disappoints. Try the Spicy Pork washed down with a 333 Beer - Sensational! Great food and speedy service always :)

Their vermicelli with grilled lemongrass beef is one of the best I've eaten in Melbourne. Good food. Not very spacious restaurant. Have to walk upstairs to use the toilet. Not very friendly for disabled and elderly people. However, what's shocking is that they charge $1.00 for every take away container. Why should they charge for take away containers? I find it a little ridiculous. I've been a regular at this restaurant for years. They might just charge you $1 to use the toilet next time. Company policy it seems...
Shasha
Very excellent service, staff were very friendly and food was amazing. Definitely come back and highly recommend this lovely restaurant to my friends.
Food Lover
Great customer service. Clean restaurant. Fresh ingredients. The last time we ordered unfortunately the pork vermicelli bun was missing lettuce and bean shoots. Only had carrots and herbs. Great beef pho.

I had not been to Tien Dat since 2017. I remember my friend wanted to go during the time they were under renovations about 2 years ago and we had always said we'd go back when it reopened, well it definitely took us a long time haha! <br/><br/>I'm not sure what has happened but the quality of food seem to have dropped and prices have definitely increased. What a shame.<br/><br/>🔆LOCATION🔆<br/><br/>Tien Dat is situated on Carrington Road, near the corner of Station Street. A busy area and every so often new eateries pop up. Tien Dat has definitely withstand the changes.<br/>The interior now looks very modern which is quite nice.<br/><br/>🔆SERVICE🔆<br/><br/>Customer service here seems to be rather slow. The waitress that took our order seemed like she was in a rush, she kept looking over her shoulder and I was worried she'd get our order wrong. Though she did repeat our order, thankfully it was correct.  <br/><br/>🔆MENU/PRICE🔆<br/><br/>We ordered to share: <br/>Banh Xeo - Vietnamese Crepe, $17.80<br/>(with Tom thit - pork and prawn)<br/><br/>Grilled lemongrass chicken Bun, $14.80<br/>(add Tien Dat Spring rolls, $3.00)<br/><br/>🔆VERDICT🔆<br/> <br/><br/>The Banh Xeo seemed to be rather small for the price. The crepe was very thin and oily. We felt it lacked seasoning in the filling.<br/><br/>The was alot of rice vermicelli noodles in the bun. Shredded lettuce was all the way at the bottom with heaps of crushed peanuts sprinkled over the lemongrass chicken and spring rolls. The chicken was tender but lacked flavour. Spring rolls was nice and crispy. <br/><br/>Overall our experience was rather average.
Melanie (ForeverBrunching)
A very nice Vietnamese restaurant in Box Hill<br/><br/>The interior is simple, but very pleasant<br/><br/>FOOD<br/>Rice Paper Rolls (veg): I really liked these rice paper rolls, and especially the flavoursome sauce they were served with<br/>Sweet & sour chicken: A nice take on a classic. I liked the slightly crispy batter on the chicken, that wasn't super thick<br/>Bowl: The bowl was very generous in terms of serving size! The crispy spring rolls were very contrasted to the rest of the bowl which was quite soft. The dish definitely was tied together by the tasty sauce<br/><br/>Nice staff, who served the food quickly
Sammy_mi
The food and the service was so bad. Missed my ordered and food wasn’t cooked well. Also even ordered with Uber eat my food was damaged. Not recommended this place!
La Ola Es Mia Cocina.
Tien Dat, is a very busy restaurant in a great location of Box Hill. <br/><br/>The service was very friendly and efficient.<br/><br/>Unfortunately the main Tom Yum soup, wasn’t as good as I’ve experienced flavour wise elsewhere.<br/>Also the prawn and pork rice paper rolls, were a bit of a let down, compared to other Vietnamese restaurants I’ve been too.<br/><br/>They were good, but not as amazing as I hoped they would be.<br/><br/>I would come again and try other things and then I may give a higher score on my review upon that visit.<br/><br/>But this is just going by my overall rating for tonight.
Sasha
Food was delicious, fresh and quickly prepared. Staff were friendly and efficient. The restaurant gets very busy at night, so it's advised to book in advance. Will be back again to try more food.
Steven
Tien Dat was a nice establishment which could be great. Service was nice and friendly when entering and we were promptly given a table. The spring rolls were very nice as an entree. However, our mains didn’t only come ~20mins apart from each other but even when requested for a vegetarian Mee Goreng, chicken was still in the dish and waited another ~20mins.<br/><br/>The food was quite nice however service and attention to detail needs work.
Deng
Been here twice and the place is absolutely amazing. The bun (vermicilli) with lemongrass beef and the lunch special (fried rice with fried squid) was perfect. It's nice to have vietnamese food that doesn't make you feel sick of unhealthy afterwards. Highly recommend this place
Chomp
Thought the food here was really fresh and delicious. We had the spring rolls and beef wrapped in betal leaf for entree. The beef was nice and juicy both entrees were serviced with crispy lettuce and fresh herbs. I had the beef noodle soup with lemongrass and chilli and boy did it pack a punch! Was nice and spicy and flavoursome. All the dishes were decent size. I’ve noticed that a lot of people are commenting on the price however based on the fresh produce, flavour and the venue itself which is quiet nice and modern I feel as though the price is quiet reasonable. Looking forward to coming back and trying different dishes.

Food: 2/5<br/>Service: 3/5<br/><br/>Ordered dishes: Pho and Bun Bo Hue<br/><br/>The food is way too overpriced.<br/><br/>Noodles:<br/>They aren't fresh noodles. Even when the restaurant isn't specialised in both the dishes, if you make your customers pay $14 don't you think you should use fresh noodles instead?<br/><br/>However, the worst thing is that we couldn't use the chopsticks to pick up the Pho noodles. Look at the photo! We don't think the noodles are overcooked because they aren't mushy so we wonder if they used whatever left (the tiny bits) in their instant noodle package to cook these bowls. At the end we had to use our spoons.<br/><br/>Broth:<br/>MSG. The Bun Bo Hue is actually ok, while the Pho is really salty. But both of them have quite a lot of MSG. Something about the taste make us wonder if they use instant Pho and Bun Bo Hue seasoning to make the broth. But we don't know for sure, maybe it's just their way of seasoning.<br/><br/>Overall, if you're looking for authentic Vietnamese food don't come here. There are other places serve much better food at lower prices.<br/><br/>

1.5/5 because food was alright. Honestly, for their price, I could get a lot more at a genuine Vietnamese restaurant, and there’s a plenty around. The biggest let down was and have always been the service. <br/><br/>Around 2-3 years back, I recall coming here and ordering a bun (vermicelli salad). In that salad, came a complimentary strand of arm pit hair or to assume the worst, hair from ‘down there’. Not only did we not receive any compensation for something that made me and the rest of the table want to gag and vomit, they didn’t even apologise for it. <br/><br/>Honestly, knowing how awful the service was, I never found myself paying my money to those people again. Until last Friday when I decided to give Tien Dat a second shot after their refurbishment to what looked like a bright, modern, comfortable place. <br/><br/>The food was ok, price was not the best for the quality but it was a good meal with my friends! I was chatting away after not seeing my mates for a long time, as people do. It was a decent experience until two waiters kept rushing us out of their restaurant. <br/><br/>“Are you finished?” Followed by “are you finished yet?” Followed by “finish?” When we were CLEARLY and have REPEATEDLY SAID WE ARE NOT FINISHED. No joke, I actually thought it was pretty funny then because they would NO JOKE come over one after the other every 2 minutes to ask to take our plates away. <br/><br/>I just find it so funny that you make yourself so modern looking, seemingly accomodating to customers, yet you LITERALLY grab their money and then chase them out. That’s not how you do it chief. 1.5 for the chefs cooking the food. <br/><br/>Last comment.. funny but it seems like the waiters and the owner herself seem to favour some customers more over the others... <br/>
Amanda
Taste is good. I think all the dishes are overpriced. Portion of Pho is not enough. The restaurant is clean, but not much space between tables. Not fully satisfied at the end.
Melvin Lay
I bought the spicy pork chop on salad. Taste wise it was good however I don’t understand how the price just increased dramatically all of the sudden for the same portion like that it use to get previously. For other restaurants around, the prices here are on the high end.
Connie
3.5/5 <br/>The newly renovated interior is both modern and gives very relaxed vibes.<br/>The food here is quite flavourful, fresh and well presented however compared to other nearby restaurants it is a bit pricier. <br/>Loved the wide variety of dishes !

Food Rating: 😀4/5<br/>Atmosphere Rating: 4/5<br/>Service Rating: 👏 4/5<br/><br/>Not extraordinary but a popular place with some great food at Box Hill. The interior and atmosphere was quite modern, clean and nice; and the service was quite prompt and quick.<br/>I ordered the prawn spring rolls and the grilled lemongrass pork bún. The spring rolls and the sauce were really nice and refreshing. The bún was quite nice, but a little on the bland side on my opinion, but the portions were filling. <br/>However, the place does fill up quite quick on the weekends, so I would definitely recommend booking in advance!
Bobby
Ordered pork steamed pancakes but unfortunately prawn pancakes were brought out - I discovered this after eating one third of the portion. My partner is allergic to prawn, however the manager refused to change the item stating that it needed to have been returned prior to having eaten any of it. Never encountered this at previously at other restaurants.<br/><br/>Terrible service in this occasion that has now unfortunately soured precious excellent experiences.
Tony Barnes
Ok, the tables might be a little close together in places; but if that's not going to annoy you too much, the food is incredibly fresh and tasty.<br/><br/>Highly recommend the tofu salad, coriander chilli prawns (generous portion and very fresh...good amount of chilli).  Will be back for sure!

Been there for a few times for a work function. The restaurant catered comfortably to a large group of us. Tasty but slightly expensive Vietnamese food.
Sunny Days Melbourne
Today was the first time we visited Tien Dat after their renovations awhile ago. Our previous experience was relatively pleasant and there was a family vibe all around. Unfortunately, once again, "new" does not always equate to "better". <br/><br/>First up, the modern decor, while pleasing to the eye, was just that. There was little substance to it. The tables were far too close to each other and for the mildly inflated prices of their menu items, I would have expected a bit more elbow room. <br/><br/>The beef pho was a huge let down. Instead of being soft and silky, the pho noodles were hard and alarmingly powdery. The beef slices were sliced too thickly. The broth was dull and under seasoned. <br/><br/>The lemongrass chicken vermicelli noodle salad was another disappointment. The chicken was dry and tough. The salad looked tired but fortunately the spring rolls were crispy and edible. <br/><br/>Then there's the service. The wait staff were cold, robot-like and bordering on being outright rude. I think some lessons in smiling are required here. <br/><br/>What a dark and cloudy day it was at Tien Dat.....
Reneeee
This is the worst dining experience, the food, the service and just everything. The food is literally uneatable. Every table had their food mixed up. Don’t go unless you want have a disappointing experience.

Was looking to get my Vietnamese fix around the area and stumbled upon this store. <br/><br/>I ordered their rice vermicelli noodles with grilled lemongrass beef and a sliced beef and tendon pho. The rice vermicelli noodles were nice and light, and the beef was pretty tasty! However the pho was a bit disappointing especially for the price ($14), I expected to get a bit more meat/tendon. The broth was okay, but I have definitely had better in Footscray. <br/><br/>Service was fast and friendly.

Authentic vietnamese restaurant in boxhill, have heard of it but never really tried it out till now. Modern decor and interior design inside, besides a bit cramp between table spacing. We had broken rice with pork, tasted pretty good and top it off with vietnamese ice coffee.
Dina Lobo
We ordered spring rolls, pad Thai and the bun bo hue, the one with chilli, lemongrass and beef. None of the dishes disappointed us. The flavour was on point.
Paul Buitenhuis
I was not given the correct food in a takeaway order and overcharged. They would not refund the money and basically told me it was my fault.
Vivian
This Vietnamese restaurant has been successfully running in Boxhill for a long time. I really enjoy the flavours here although it is more catered to a Caucasian palette. I find the flavours are quite authentic with the price of the food a bit more than your usual Vietnamese restaurant. <br/><br/>The pho , bun bo hue , the vermicelli noodle dishes with the bo la lot and Hanoi spring rolls are my favourite dishes , the deep fried ice cream here was also quite good .
Kiffdcosta
Got recommended to this place from a friend as it has good decor as well as authentic Vietnamese food. They were defs right! It had a really great modern feel as well as the food being authentic $ great tasting! Defs recommend
Annii
A very decent authentic Vietnamese restaurant with good service. The pho is always a good choice, but I am also partial to the bun! Highly recommended for anyone who is feeling some pho but aren’t inclined to travel all the way to Springvale.
LeaRuby69
Ordered take away to be delivered ...super quick delivery ... and all dishes were generous and full of flavor ... the chicken satay was moist and the Hanoi Spring rolls ... crispy on the outside and an explosion of flavors are divine ...the shredded chicken salad was fresh .. maybe a bit more chicken if I had to say anything in the way of CC... will be back
Karen
The food at Tien Dat has such an amazing traditional taste, and is delicious! We started off with their Spring Rolls (which were so fresh) and went on to eat the Pad Thai, Pho and Chicken Curry. We enjoyed every dish! Staff are friendly and helpful! We will definetely be back 😊

A place with romantic cozy setting. The food is good and well-presented but not so authentic. I didn't like to have dinner while having to watch for the time to leave for other customers to come in as the place wad always busy so they would give us a time frame to dine in when ww booked the table. Service was average though.
LC
I dined at this restaurant a few months ago and it was pretty average to be honest. The food is definitely not as tasty as Pho888 which is just up the road on Station Street. Not sure why it’s so packed when there are so many other options in Box Hill
DMS
There’s a reason why this place has been in business for so long. Good quality food and variety never disappoint. Some of the dishes are more Chinese inspired. It’s not your usual pho place where the decor and ambiance is not “exciting”. Au contraire, this place provides both good quality and ambiance.<br/><br/>Kids love chicken, they devoured grilled chicken with rice. My hubs got the lot with Hanoi spring rolls. Again I can’t eat shrimp but he said this spring roll is different and he inhaled them.<br/><br/>My fave is an oldie (classic) but goodie. Beef with betel leaves. We also got the rock fish with snap peas. I like their seasoning and sauce not to sweet just the right amount of spicy. If you still have room and want to get healthy order the Chinese broccoli with tofu and mushroom.<br/><br/>And oh don’t get intimidated with the line,we’ve gone there a few times without reservations but they let us in (just need to leave by a certain time)<br/><br/><br/><br/>

Reasonable experience but better Vietnamese options available.<br/>We attended on a cold Melbourne winter Wednesday night in a group of 8 people. Luckily we made a booking as the restaurant was very busy. We were seated in the upstairs area of the restaurant. We ordered an array of dishes (broken rice, pho, egg noodle soup, chicken ribs, spring rolls, beef betel leaf entrees). Dishes would be considered reasonable for Vietnamese restaurant. At nearly $15 for a bowl of Pho you are paying a premium price when compared to Vietnamese restaurants in Eastern Suburbs (Richmond/Springvale etc). Food was reasonable and relatively tasty but not as mind blowing as the previous reviews would suggest. Service was reasonably okay, our waiter said he wasn't not Vietnamese so his  knowledge of dishes wasn't great. But he was friendly enough.
Yuji D
When I ordered my pho I requested to get a bit more vegetables and less noodles and was willing to pay more if needed. I have been to many Vietnamese restaurants around Melbourne and all have been accommodating with small requests like this. The first waitress agreed with this small alteration without any hesitation. When the food came I saw there were no changes - it was a different waitress who brought it so I thought maybe she just didn't know so I politely explained what I initially requested and she said ok and will go back and check. What happened next really soured my experience.<br/><br/>A guy who I assumed was someone like a manager or higher up came and literally started speaking to me in a harsh tone about how it would be more expensive and overall more problematic for them to give more vegetables even though I clearly mentioned earlier I was willing to pay extra. Yet he kept on rambling about how this was not in their business's interest to do this which to this day still makes no sense. I'd be an idiot to come back here again.
KAG
The best joint in Box Hill hands down, food is fresh and very tasty, staff are also very accommodating.<br/>The restaurant is very clean and has a great vibe, definitely recommended.
Melbourne Culinary
Tien Dat is one of the older restaurants in Box Hill, as well as being the first Vietnamese restaurant in Box Hill, since opening in 1983. Unlike many of the other Vietnamese restaurants in Box Hill, Tien Dat offers a more diverse range of Vietnamese dishes instead of choosing to specialise in a specific style.
Oj_always_eating
I love love love Tien Dat!!! Have tried so many items on this menu, and have loved everything! The Bun is fantastic - such a big serving, it really hits the spot. The pho is right on point as well. Another favourite is he Bo La Lot - so much better than other ones I’ve had! Definitely recommend this place for a cheap and cheerful night out - but don’t forget to book, as it can be very hard to get a table!

Great food....fast, efficient, friendly service. Menu-great variety, nice atmosphere and overall a great dinner experience. Highly recommend!!<br/>

Got our whole order wrong and they were so confused when we complained and kept going back to ‘talk to manager’ but would not come back and only came over when we called them again. Food was pretty good though but service ruined the experience.
Mas
We went there on a Friday night. I ordered Crispy Duck with plum sauce, the duck was super-crispy, as it was said in the menus, due to a thick layer of batter, I doubt it was duck though. The sauce was just thick sugar syrup. Overall, the dish was disgusting, surprise with the high score that this place has! When I complained about the food, the manager didn't accept anything, didn't said sorry, and she was very rude.<br/><br/>Worst place I've ever been (the worst place in my list was "Bavarian Grill Haus" but this place won the battle).
Tania
Staff were super friendly and helpful. Bought take away which didnt require a long wait. Bun and spring rolls were delicious. Its quite a large and filling meal. Will be back to try other foods at the restaurant.
Dom
Wow, what a gastronomical delight visiting Tien Dat today. Food was fresh, arrived fast and was simply divine. Staff were friendly and efficient. A definite must try if you love Vietnamese cuisine and my new favourite (don’t mind driving the 49km)
Ronnie
The streets of Box Hill are always changing with new food places coming in and out all the time, and even as a local, it's hard to keep up. Tien Dat has a very nice, modern, clean fit out which will probably hide its age (it's relatively new now) for years to come.<br/>Although the pho is slightly pricier than other restaurants in Box Hill (both in actual price and serving size), the difference was quite worth it - the quality of the meat used was noticeably better. The only issue I personally had was with the broth: it was a good broth, but I would have liked it slightly stronger.
James Martinus
We've come to this restaurant many times (because other people like it - my wife and I would choose somewhere else) and this is the third time we've been asked to leave because they needed the table. Tonight we were a group of two and we counted 4 free tables as we left and there was no one waiting to come in. I've never experienced this anywhere else. You pay more for the food here than in most Box Hill restaurants so you'd expect that you wouldn't be treated like a transaction. Won't be back this time.
Holly
Food was amazing, exploding with flavour. best tom yum I’ve ever had. Loved the ‘wrap and roll’ menu, great concept. We will definitely be back!!
Two Sheds
Modern fit out. Narrow spaces here and tables close together but the whole thing works well. Seems like modern Vietnamese. I was after a lightish meal and ordered a beef salad. Bottom line: best I’ve ever tasted. Better than any I’ve had here or in Vietnam itself. Exquisitely flavoured with beef done just right it was superb. Decent sized serve too. Serious points to the clever soul who added a riesling freak (no 5) to the wine list here. Magnificent choice. They know their stuff here. This was the meal I’d been seeking in Victoria St for some years but never found. Recommended.
Cathleen
love it. Very nice food over there. Properly one of the best Vietnamese food in Melbourne. The Vietnamese coffee there was so great. Tasty and traditional.
Diner
NYE dinner with the family.<br/>Recently renovated restaurant, airy, bright, clean, comfortable decor.<br/>Reasonably priced dishes of the typical variety.<br/>Relatively yummy dishes, not spectacular but presented well, missing the finer details like no lemon with the pho, bean sprouts, mint not fresh.<br/>Customer service is passable, one of our main dishes took almost an hour to arrive, at the end of the dinner.<br/>Final verdict....it ok.<br/>
Shun Liu
My partner and I eats here frequently, we always have their Mixed Dry Vermicelli and Spicy noddle soup. I’d always like to compare this place with Indochire down the street and this place does have some more unique choices to offer.<br/><br/>I think their main dishes taste better and more fresh, but in terms of vermicelli or noddle soup the other place down the street is better. But Tian Dat definitely wins in terms of service.
Bob Sharon
We decided to visit for a family lunch and found the food to be fresh and tasty. The restaurant has been renovated and is very nice. I highly recommend this Vietnamese restaurant.
Robert Brawn
Went here the other day. The decor was fine but the service wasn't great and the food was nothing to write home about.<br/>Not sure why people give this place a high rating. Maybe it is due to the anglos who visit this place don't know what good Vietnamese food is supposed to taste like. I sat there whilst anglos either side of me ordered lemon chicken, sweet and sour, etc. those are chinese dishes! <br/>If you want better traditional Vietnamese food then go to the indochine (sister establishment) back up Carrington road. Or huong viet on the main drag.
Anastasia Beaverhousen
Fabulous Vietnamese Fusion food closer to home than our regular Victoria Street 'go to' restaurant. Will definitely return to work our way through the rest of the menu.
Jimmy
The taste here is very much westernised as is the modern design of the restaurant. You feel like stepping into a European restaurant but with asian food. The seating is quite tight and uncomfortable as well.<br/><br/>Hardly any asians eat here.<br/><br/>Food here is ok, but isn't the best Vietnamese I have had for the price. Can get much better in Richmond, and better value.
Victoria Teoh
Ate here last night for the first time for a while. It has just reopened after renos and we had been there several times prior and had previously been impressed with the food and service. <br/>Wow. I don’t know what happened but last night’s dining experience was just horrible. We were a group of 9 and they ‘ran out’ of pretty much every dish we ordered - vegetarian spring rolls, pork chops, duck. This would not be a big deal, however they only told us they had run out an hour after we’d ordered. The other dishes all came out at different times so we didn’t really have dinner together at all.<br/>The wait staff were quite nice, but something has obviously gone wrong in the kitchen since the refurbish.<br/>In terms of the food we did have, this also seems to have gone way downhill. The banh xeo filling was extremely stingy and the chicken was very dry and bland - I think this is because they’ve switched from using chicken thigh meat to really thin chicken breast.<br/>We were offered a 15% discount because they acknowledged our terrible experience. 50% would be more appropriate and even then we still wouldn’t go back.
Sarah P
Been coming here for years and food is always consistently good. Service is quick and efficient. Can be very noisey downstairs so try and grab a table upstairs if possible

I love Tien Dat. Fresh vietnamese food in a lively environment. They are always busy, so book a table. Can't wait to see the place after renovations are finished.
Mini Mooi
busy restaurant and fast service. My husband and I  use to go here without booking but it seems like need a booking to go in now. This place is one of my favourite Vietnam restaurant.
LittleM
The pho and bun we tried at this place was pretty tasty and of a good serving size. Service was relatively quick. The restaurant is pretty busy during the peak hours.

Tien Dat would have to be my ultimate pick for dining down Carrington Road in Box Hill. It's perfectly positioned between the train station and home for me and while it's always busy I have yet to be turned away when going in for a quick after work dinner. Suggest the later dining times could be more problematic. Tien Dat does a decent range of Vietnamese dishes well and my favourites include the vermicelli noodle bûn dish with lemongrass chicken and a good pouring fish sauce for added taste. Add spring rolls to the dish for added crunch factor. It also does a range of miscellaneous Asian dishes such as sweet and sours and black beans of the world which hardly need to make an appearance on the menu given how good the Vietnamese content is but I guess they want to appeal to a wide audience. I am also a fan of the lemongrass/ chilli tickling fish stir fry... delicious. <br/><br/>I have not been In since they have closed down briefly for renovations but shall certainly check them out once they reopen and will be hoping their food remains as good as it has been in the past.

By far the best restaurant in box hill. Good service, good food, good quality and friendly staff. Ordered the BuLocLac and red pork curry. The highlight here is the bu loc lac. The peanut butter sauce is to die for. Pricing is on the high side but worth it. Book in advance otherwise you'll be in for a long wait.
Georgia
Service is very slow and staff didn't welcome me upon arrival. Although food is very yummy and nice!! There is a wide variety of dishes which is great :))

Came here with like a huge booking of 15+ for a friend's of mine birthday. It's a very crowded restaurant but don't really mind it, overall friendly staff that tend to our needs. I ordered the broken rice with the lot, It was my first time ordering broken rice after being told non stop by my friends and it did not disappoint me. The dish was really satisfied 👌

Yummy food, very consistent flavours. My favourite place to eat. Super duper fresh and sooooooo tasty. Love the satay and the rice vermecilli<br/>

Disappointed, asked for food that wouldn't affect my intolerances but despite promises the food made me ill. Staff didn't seem to care once we were aware of the wrong food. Also expensive corkage $19 & cakeage $11. Otherwise food was nice.

So we decided to branch out from our usual Vietnamese place, and chose Tien Dat down the street for a leisurely lunch after grocery-shopping. The restaurant itself was pleasant enough, with practical seating (I could see it becoming quite cramped and uncomfortable during busy periods though). We shared the special broken rice, beef in betel leaf, lemongrass and chilli fried rockling and lemongrass prawn skewers. <br/>I only had a bit of the broken rice but it was one of the better ones I have tried - can't go wrong with a crispy pork chop (not soggy) and a sunny-yolked egg on top! The beef in betel leaf was delicious with a smoky sweetness and a slight crunch from the crispy leaves. Wrapped up in a lettuce leaf with springy vermicelli noodles, tangy pickles and some nuoc mam sauce, it was a mouthful of heaven. the prawns were similar in execution, seasoned well - I enjoyed chewing on the sweet sugarcane skewers and discarding its fibrous remains :). <br/>The fish was fresh and the sauce had that distinct aroma of lemongrass, but it lacked in heat (easily fixed with the chopped fresh chillies provided upon asking) and was unfortunately quite oily. The batter maintained its bite even after sitting in the sauce for a while. <br/>Service was accommodating and polite; we didn't feel rushed even as the place started filling up with chattering patrons. <br/>A worthy contender for one of the best Vietnamese restaurants in the Box Hill area!

Ordered some takeaway Bun only to get home and realize there was no sauce to add to it. Called the restaurant to let them know and ask if they had Uber eats to deliver sauce. No they don't have Uber eats so the girl informs me I have 2 options: drive back and pick up sauce; or they'll give me $2 off my next order. Told the girl that $2 off was not good enough and that a free Bun next time would rectify the situation. She said that the sauce was only worth $2 so they were my only options. I said it was irrelevant how much the missing element was, I did not get what I paid for, and without it, it was just a bowl of dry noodles and meat. She said she could only offer $2 on principle. Don't think she knows the meaning of the word! Definitely won't be going there ever again.

Went for lunch on Queens birthday and ordered plum sauce duck that they clearly stated on their blackboard as their "special". After 10mins we have been told they are sold out(it's only 12:30 on public holiday). Therefore we ordered something else. But when we are going to pay for the meal, we have been charged the duck dish which we haven't got chances to try. The staff management is little bit slack, doesn't think will go back again!

Never again!!We went last week chaos.!A rude and flustered man insisted we hadn't made a booking then agreed we had but kept us standing amongst the patrons eating for 20 minutes before we left.Food is usually great but customer service appalling!!!

Been here a few times now and have always been impressed by their food. The place is usually very busy and there have been times when we had to turn away as it was too busy. <br/><br/>The upstairs area is waitered separately to downstairs which seems to work well. This time I had the rockling fish lightly battered and stir fried with hot chilli and basil - excellently done!

Came here with a group of friends and sat upstairs. The meals are great here just like Indochine a few doors down. Would recommend this place to anyone for Vietnamese

Seating wasn't comfortable and restaurant was very crowded however the food was absolutely fantastic and the staff were very friendly. Fantastic Vietnamese gem

Popped in to Tien Dat for an early dinner around 6 and the place was almost full! Interestingly mostly with Caucasian diners. So my experience of Tien Dat is purely from a vegetarian perspective. I was really impressed with the range of vegetarian options available considering the cuisine is mostly Vietnamese. I ordered vegetarian fried rice and Singapore noodles. Both were really good! They were both flavoursome and had a good variety of veggies with tofu and egg. The service was also fantastic. Being double story they have two waiters upstairs at all times which cater to a handful of tables. Prices were pretty good also. Would definitely go back again to try some of the vegetarian Vietnamese dishes!

Food was okay but prices are high. Plus if you would like to use card to pay and total under $30 they have audacity to charge $1 transaction fee. Give me a spell!

Been here many times over the years, however the recent visit has confirmed that the standard of food has gone down by heaps. Seems like it is moving away from the traditional recipe and more towards the westernise tastebuds. Bring back the herbs, the spices and the full traditional Vietnamese flavours please. Until then, I will not be going back.

Came here on a rainy and cold Melbourne day. The place was simple and a bit squishy, cozy for the freezing day. <br/>The waitress wasn't very friendly, but the food came promptly. I've had better pho in Richmond but the spring rolls were amazing. Full of flavours in the crispy pastry that was neither soaked in oil nor overly powdery. Would definitely come back for the rolls, however, the price was a tad bit too expensive in my opinion. <br/><br/>

One of the better Vietnamese places for food.<br/>Ordered the satay chicken vermicelli salad with the added spring rolls, and 2 servings of the pork steamed pancake.<br/>Staff was very friendly.<br/>Food was good, atmosphere was lively. The only issue I had was that the table was a little sticky.<br/>Prices are bit more than the average around Box Hill.

I've frequented Tien Dat multiple times, the food is always great, and it's always been enough to bring us back despite the average and sometimes rude service. Tonight however, was unacceptable, in the end we actually cancelled our order and left. It began with the waiter bringing out the wrong order for my partner and reluctantly agreeing to send it back to the kitchen to have it corrected. Upon asking if I could have my meal kept warm until my partners was ready - to allow us to eat simultaneously on our date night - I was rudely told that wasn't an option and that I'd have to awkwardly consume my meal whilst my partner watched, and then vice versa. The waiter continued to rudely confront me about this request and then spoke another language loudly and rudely in front of us to his co-workers whilst they snickered. Horrible experience and a horrible service, our date night was ruined. I will never be ordering food from or attending this restaurant again. A massive disappointment.

I have been here before and had the bun, but this time I had Pad Thai.  The restaurant is over two levels, so there's more table than it looks when you first step in the door, although upstairs can be a little noisy sometimes.  Everyone at the table (I was with a group) enjoyed their food, and prices are reasonable as well.

Very enjoyable place to eat just love it here. Food is always good. Great place to grab a quick bit. Always our go to when we are in a hurry.

Food was very nice and came quickly. One of the dishes I had (I don't really remember what it was called) was very salty but all the others were great! If I had the chance, I would definitely come back! ❤️

Nice people but hard to get what you really ordered. My daughter is allergic to mint so I asked for noodles without greens but they put mint and coriander in it. I only got 50% off the dish. Talk about rubbish
Expensive Delicious Habit.
When our celiac friend suggested Tien Dat for a double date, we were happy to oblige. Turns out Tien Dat does worry-free gluten free food very well- clearly marked menus, informed staff and lots of variety. Well worth a visit- and it's BYO so bring a vino!

The first few times when I visited this place it was good. Decent meal and reasonable price.<br/><br/>For some reasons,  this restaurant think highly for themselves and cater for non-Asian customers without any specialty dishes. It seems Asians don't eat there.  It is nice but that not that special. Another Vietnamese restaurant not far from it would produce similar quality of food without the weird attitude.  <br/><br/>Service level is lacking.  Not recommended anymore.

The Bun and lemongrass chicken rice was really good:) Pho 👌🏽 <br/>Service is really fast and really polite customer service :):):):):):):):):)

I love this restaurant. Excellent food.<br/>A little bit noisy and busy if you go at peak times, but overall a great feed and excellent value for money.

Hope they can add the pics on their menu. You will easy to get your all dishes with lemongrass. 😅 very popular restaurant so it's bit crowded when peak time.

Awesome Vietnamese food. The staff was very friendly. Fresh ingredients, wonderful taste. We ordered Rice paper roll, and Spicy Pork (stir fry) plain rice, and chicken lemon grass bun. Shilpa Malhotra

Comfortable ambience and pretty good Vietnamese food no wonder it was so crowded on CNY day! Really enjoyed the bun vermicelli with lemongrass chicken .

Food was delicious, well presented and reasonably priced, service was okay, felt a bit nicer being there than many of the other restaurants in the area.

Line out the front when we got there(good sign). Got a table in about 15mins. Well worth the wait. Food is excellent and different to the standard Vietnamese restaurant staples.

We opted for one of our favourite entrees - spring rolls - which were golden, crispy and yum in vermicelli noodles & lettuce cups which came with. Always a good start to a meal!<br/><br/>We were both feeling a BUNtiful meal tonight - ordering a chicken lemongrass and a curried chicken lemongrass bun. While the bun hit our standards (refreshing, flavoursome and filling) we did feel it lacked a bit of presentation on arrival to our table. The Curried chicken lemongrass bun probably could have had a bit more chicken in it!! <br/><br/>Service was below average and a bit of a disappointment frankly. Enjoyed our meals, but won't be rushing back - there is better bun just a few doors down!! 😉

I found the food here a bit lacking to be honest. Each dish seemed to be lacking something,i mean the food wasnt terrible but i definitely wasnt above average. We had the bun dishes (with lemongrass bpork and spring rolls) and duck rolls, nothing special.

Updated review after going again after refurbishment - looks nice but very squishy, too many tables. Food was tasty as per usual but they gave fish sauce with vegetarian spring rolls. I was also told “5 minutes” after being there for only 40 minutes and still drinking my glass of wine. We were given the bill and not asked if we wanted anything else, or dessert - which we did, but never mind. When 5 minutes passed she came up and tried to usher us out. It’s been 45 minutes! We had a booking!

I ordered takeout from Tien Dat a few months ago and I can't say I had a great experience. If I base and compare my food to the authentic Vietnamese flavours I grew up with from my mother's cooking or even Springvale, this was a world apart. I ordered vermicelli and pork. The food was bland. The pork; burnt and lacked seasoning.  Perhaps I ran into bad luck the time I chose to dine here.

Have been coming here quite a lot in the past year or so and I believe they definitely do the best best pho's you could find in the Eastern suburbs area, the broths are always very flavoursome and extremely tasty but definitely leaves you feeling very thirsty after each sitting. <br/>Their buns and rice dishes are also pretty nice but if your gonna be a first timer here then definitely come here for the pho. <br/>
