Review Pho 888 - Box Hill

Siew Kiat Tai
Authentic rare beef pho. Service was good. Some of the rare beef a bit overcooked. The broken rice is nice but portion size could be bigger. Cash-only is a problem in a pandemic. Prefer contactless payment.

Consistent, authentic Vietnamese food. Always a great option to eat in Box Hill.
Evelyn Lee
The best Vietnamese Pho which do not have msg. Try the beef & pork combination. The spring rolls is tasty & at affordable price. They have lots of other type of rice dishes, etc.

Good BBH & pho. Service a bit slower than other pho shops. Takes cash only. Place is clean and toilets well maintained.

Very rude customer service! We left and didn’t order. The ugly waitress can not wait for us to think even one second. When we ready to order she was showing grumpy face to us. This is interesting, there are plenty of restaurants we can chose , we are not paying for grumpy face! Byebye!

Really tasty pho. The grilled pork was pretty amazing and I have never seen grilled pork pho before. Worth a try. The crispy pork was also very nice but a little Salty. So if you like salty things you’ll be in heaven Overall very tasty and a very good price

I'm your regular customer, I always come to your restaurant dine in plus take away, giving this one star because of your auntie waitress. I'm a part time uber driver and few days ago I came to your shop to pick up an order. Your waitress can't recognise me because I'm almost fully cover myself to protect from cold. I'm waiting quietly without rushing her, answer politely of what your waitress asked me. Let me tell you how she asked me Waitress: What are you waiting for? Me smiling to her: Hi I'm here to pick up for XXXXX Waitress: (Ask again) What are you waiting for? I answered the same and she scold me said that she never click ready button in Uber platform and I shouldn't attend quickly. Boss in this restaurant, please educate your staffs especially attitude and tell them every delivery platform is different. We driver cannot see the order is ready or not in UBER Platform. We can see ready status in EASI, I'm not sure others. Please be Respectful to driver. Your waitress said sometimes order has been wait for an hour and no one attend to pick up, Hey boss, I'm not IT not Customer service in Uber and you shouldn't put all the blame on me?? I came to your restaurant within 5mins after I accepted the order that uber assigned to me (which is fast). I'm trying my best to calm her down, stay polite and convince myself she may be in bad mood, I explained how Uber work to her but obviously she doesn't accept and still scolding me the same thing, what a shame of her attitude, do something Boss Pho888!

Plenty of up and down reviews, but we've been coming here for years (over 15 years at least) and keep coming back. Food is good, prices are decent (not as cheap as they used to be, but still good value), and service is quick. We regularly get the pho, bun, and spring rolls.

We were served by a rude and ignorant waitress who deliberately chose to serve a customer who arrived after us rather than waiting on us first. Having gone to this restaurant for around 10 years, we have never received this kind of customer service. It seemed like the rude waitress was the owner of this restaurant. Never coming back!

This is definitely the place to go if your after really good pho or grilled lemongrass chicken. I've come here many times and if I lived in Box Hill I would be here all the time.
Tonight, the service was super fast, and the food was on point as always. The chicken was grilled well and had such a lovely lemongrass flavour.
The prices are also affordable, and the service is friendly. Will keep returning for years.

Not often is this place crowded. Quite relaxing to come here as a group.
Food is mostly as expected. Spring rolls are light and nice.
However the three colour drink is not worth it. There was hardly any substance in the cup apart from syrup and coconut milk. Just a few beans on the bottom to finish it off. Expensive.

1. Ordered special beef large. Gave our pho to a random person behind us.
2. Noticed something was wrong. Manager went to the kitchen gave us the pho which the guy behind us has ordered.
3. Didnt apologise. Took our pho back and somehow changed it and said this is our pho.
4. We asked if this is a large. The manager said yes.
Then we said but this is a medium bowl. She suddenly changed her mind and admitted it is medium with more meat???
5. She kindly(?) Offered us to give the pho with medium pho price.
6. NEVER GOING BACK

😱Lizzie’s first impression: Love how dingy it looks yet it's so popular even on a Sunday night

🍩Lizzie enjoyed: always come back for the classic pho with beef balls and sliced rare beef. Their flat rice noodles are really smooth, soft and the broth is very aromatic.

🍅Lizzie did not enjoy: nothing the service won't remind you of the service back in vietnam - quite withdrawn and non engaging. It's meant to be a quick and easy place.

🥇Lizzie rates overall: great for pho and always a plus when you don't want to try something new and just know that it will be consistent.
Sunny Days Melbourne
The arctic blast has hit Melbourne and with it a serious case of man flu. Taking a lead from my friends, I sought a dose of my Vietnamese "penicillin" chicken pho. I have been visiting the Richmond and Springvale outlets of Pho 888 for over 20 years but this was my first trip to the Box Hill branch.

In addition to the usual chicken and beef, I see that Pho 888 has branched into a number of variations of pho including seafood, grilled chicken and crispy pork as well as banh mi and the usual rice paper rolls and spring rolls. I'm happy to report that in expanding the menu,Pho 888 has maintained their high standards on their traditional offerings.

My special chicken pho was a salty, umami, life affirming bowl of rice noodles, various chicken "bits" and broth. I could feel the man flu dissipating as I slurped my noodles! One minor gripe: there probably could have been a few more chicken "bits".
Mistermister
Great broth! Very well balanced. Perfect for a winters day. The large is very large. I’d go small. Large would be good to share with your kids. Spring rolls were a bit on the thin side. But still nice.

The staff forgot my order, I have been waiting 35mins, and at the end I found that in it. And they give me a 10% discount, thanks a lot:) no more

Mmmmm I am not sure why this place was rated 4 stars inZomato. Took my kids there and ordered a grilled pork vermicelli and a grilled chicken rice paper roll. For some odd reason they have the exact same flavour profile and I couldn’t even tell which one is chicken and which one is pork.

I don’t think the hygiene is top notch there either. I saw them drop something on the ground, picked it up and just put it back in the fridge. 😕

Seldom would you find a Vietnamese restaurant in the predominantly Chinese demographic of Box Hill, rarer yet to find one of such exemplary quality and refined taste. Although located a further 50m down Station st, do not allow its segregation from Box Hill Central deter you from sampling its fresh and authentic Vietnamese cuisine.

The simple and pleasant vibe is ideal for a quick lunch between coworkers or an afternoon snack after school, do not expect wine glasses and hors d'oeuvres - this is not what Vietnamese street food is about. Although typically eaten for breakfast in Vietnam, the phở at Pho 888 is served all day along with a wide variety of toppings including rare beef, beef balls and tripe, just to name a few. Dishes including cơm tấm (broken rice), bún bò huế (hot beef and pork noodle soup) and bún thịt nướng (vermicelli salad) are also available for warmer days.

An ample platter of bean sprouts, fresh chilli, lemon, and Thai basil is served with your phở in true Southern Vietnamese style. Do not hesitate to request more spring onion and white onion, as they will happily comply with a small bowl.

The beef broth is simmered for several hours to produce a clear and fragrant soup - the rich and fatty beef flavour is perfectly complemented with hints of charred ginger and cinnamon along with a variety of other spices that tingle the tongue without being overpowering. The rice noodles are soft and velvet-like, while the meat is tender and plentiful.

Perhaps the only downside to an otherwise unblemished Pho 888 is the lack of any non-cash payment methods; albeit you will find many atms close by. However, at least for myself, withdrawing cash at Box Hill has become synonymous with an impending feast at Pho 888 - admittedly a Pavlovian response, but a welcome one to say the least!

This place must have been very good I'm the past to maintain such a high average. The food and service is very ordinary (being very polite now).
LC
We enjoyed the vermicelli with spring rolls, the vermicelli with grilled chicken and some prawn rice paper rolls. For drinks the Thai milk tea and the three colour drink. Food is delicious as always. On occasion they get the order wrong but who doesn’t make mistakes?
Minh Duong
Have been taking the kids to the restaurant for a few years now.. They loved the pho, prawn spring rolls and rice paper rolls. But the only problem we had is sometimes they put through the wrong order and is a hassle to make them re-do the dishes again so we end up eating it anyway. Other than that, the staff are pretty friendly and comfortable seating.

Pho here is good. Haven't tried any of the other dishes.

However, starting to get a little expensive with the frequent price bumps. And switching back to cash only after accepting card for a little while is a negative. Restaurant decor leaves a lot to be desired. Could use a nice freshing up, and their wall mirrors could use a bit of a clean once in a while.

Pho is pretty small portion, not enough for one meal, broken rice combo has very small piece of meat and serve without some soup, taste dry and have to eat with tea. Forget to serve papper roll and makes me really unhappy taking food away at the same time asking if you finish the food, I didn't even have time to react and reply. Terrible experience.👎
Followthefoodmelbourne
I ordered some takeaway chicken pho and rice paper rolls from here recently. The pho was quite nice however, we were given fried spring rolls instead of rice paper rolls which was a shame.
Gnetss
The pho is pho-fect! Order the rare beef pho if you’re feeling adventurous (to try rare beef in your hot noodle soup) or get the beef brisket + beef balls if you’re playing it safe. The rice vermicelli with chicken was “meh” (1.5⭐️). pro - the chicken tasted like satay (👌🏼). con - there were too much bean sprout for my liking. Eat there for a great and satisfying experience. Taking it away was less satisfying at the soup was too little! EAT THERE for a pho-tastic time 😋

Unfortunate for this restaurant is its location being tucked away at the end of the shopping strip on Station St. Having said that this place is the best Vietnamese food you can get around Box Hill central. Service is not great as you might expect but that's how you know it's genuine! Inside it is also quite dark and gloomy. However the pho and its broth are very hearty and everything you'd want in a pho. Price a little higher than average but for what you get it is worth it.

Outside of the times that I'm visiting suburbs such as Richmond or Springvale, which are known for their Vietnamese communities, Pho 888 has become my go-to restaurant for a quick and cheap bowl of Pho.
Mini Mooi
Fast service and cash only. We had chicken vermicelli and crispy chicken. The chicken vermicelli was nice but crispy chicken was little bit dry.
CNK
I hadn't been to this restaurant in months. I ordered my usual which was the medium beef and tendon pho. The broth has always been a huge draw card for me out of all the other restaurants I'd had pho, and it was still as brilliantly delicious.
This is my happy meal. It was generous, delicious and reliable. That's why I'll always come back.

Good option for a quick meal of pho when you’re on the go. Prefer the chicken breast as the thigh is fatty. I always get the meat spring rolls to complement the meal. The grilled chicken vermicelli is yummy and the chicken reminds me of satay chicken we get back home. Reasonably priced for Box Hill and you get a decent amount of meat😋
LittleMushroom
I ordered takeaway for dinner, I had grilled chicken vermicelli for $15. The chicken was tender and full of flavor. The sauce for vermicelli was nice too, I did need more sauce for the amount of vermicelli. I'm tempted to try other dishes in the future.

Located on the busy Station Street, we crossed the road from Box Hill Central to get to the venue. We were quickly seated when we walked in at 1pm on a Saturday. This is our second visit to the venue and as usual we expected minimal service. The interior is what we would describe a little dated. The cashier and kitchen is located right at the back with the rest of the rectangular area occupied by tables set in an orderly fashion; 4 seater on the far left, 8 seater in the centre and 2 seaters on the far right all the way to the front of the venue.
Tabb
Of all the places around the area you can get pho this is by far the best! You get more meat portion here than any other place. The place has also just been redone in the last year or so and so cleanliness is great! Quick service too!
Peanut Butter Cup
Really nice Pho. One of those standards Vietnamese restaurants. Quick service, lots of options and all the sides to customise yourself. But honestly really good quality for price and size. Have been here a few times and will definitely come back.
Vivian
I like the pho and bun bo hue here , the taste is quite good especially considering the fact that it is situated in a non Vietnamese area. The soup is well balanced and the sizes are generous too. I would not recommend anything other than the soup noodles tho
Lollycc
Extremely friendly service. Great food ! Will definitely come back. Our go to place for Pho ! Authentic and the all time favourite for our entire family.
Samuel Pinches
Had the crispy pork - meal was only ok, and although reasonably priced it wasn’t particularly special. I’ll have to try the pho next time and hopefully I’ll be able to up the rating then.
HungryinMelbourne
Good, classic, tasty Pho and well priced. Fast service. No frills but great taste. Definitely will be coming back here. My partner had the grilled chicken pho and also loved his meal.

I've been to a lot of pho places throughout Melbourne, and 888 will always be the best. The pho is absolutely amazing, the soup stays warm the entire time until you finish it. The aroma of the pho is amazing.
In terms of the environment, it could be a bit better but other than that there are no complaints. Every time I want pho I come here for pho. Recommend 100%!

Pho 888 has been my go-to pho place in Box Hill for a few years. Pho here isn't mind blowing but it's decent for what Box Hill has to offer. Tonight I thought I'd switch it up a little and try the broken rice combo ($12) - the picture showed reasonable sized pork chop with a fried egg, plain broken rice, small serving of salad, shredded pork skin and pickled carrots. I was excited. But was instantly disappointed when my plate of food arrived. The pork chop was the tiny - smallest piece of meat I had ever seen served with broken rice. And no, this isn't my first time trying broken rice. I even compared the meat next to the tea cup and it was only slightly larger than the cup! Flavour of the meat was good but it's not worth $12.

Hit the Spot!

Pho Triple 8 is a good option for your Pho fix in Boxhill.
Staff were friendly and attentive.

I liked the variety of options as opposed to just the usual rare beef. I went with the roast pork Pho and prawn spring rolls. The pork pho was really really nice. Plenty of flavour in the broth with nice chunks of pork.

Reasonably cheap as you would expect.

Would go back for the pork pho 🍲 !!!
Food Coma Survivor
Vermicelli with crispy barbecue pork and the pho was really delicious. The broth was clear, flavourful, came with generous plate of veggies. Best on a cold day :)
Jeremy Young
Not much to say except that the chicken pho was very tasty and reasonably priced. Not a huge menu but all of the meals on our table looked nice.
Sourjunky
Not fantastic but enough to hit a craving compares to other Vietnamese restaurants in Box Hill. We usually order the pho and the broth is quite tasty, a bit more herby would be great.
Choc Pudding
My friend who lives in the area said it is the best Vietnamese restaurant in Box Hill, I was rather disappointed though. My husband had the crispy chicken vermicelli noodles, and the portion was rather small for the price. I don't think he was full after that. I ordered salted fried chicken and eventhough chicken was tender and had nice crisp on the outside, I could not taste the salt whatsoever. Had to give chili oil and the fish sauce to give some flavour to the dish. I had the jackfruit smoothie but it tasted diluted and very icy, tasted more like pineapple juice, nothing compared to the Vietnamese restaurant in Springvale.
Penguinholme
Service is standard for Box Hill restaurants, not overly enthusiastic but never rude.

A favorite of mine when eating Vietnamese is the Cơm tấm (broken rice) combo, as i feel if you can do the standard food well then the rest follows on.Missing as part of most combo's is the pork meatloaf, however cost for quality is great, egg and rice cooked to perfection, enough pickled vegetables to off set the saltiness of the sauce supplied, the shredded pork is not overly dry and works well with the meal, and there is a special smokiness to the pork chop which transports you straight back to the street vendors in Ho Chi Minh.

This is my local go to, not spectacular, but going by taste you get more than what you pay for.
Malcolm Peou
Came here for the first time in about a year or so - Absolutely disappointed.

- Slow service with no initial greeting.

- Normally at a Pho place, waiters / waitresses come to take your order. I waited around 5 minutes before going up to the counter to place my order. Bowl of Pho with a Soda Egg drink.

- Pho came out with no issues, drink took around 15 minutes to come out whilst a table who arrived after, got theirs first.

- Pho broth tasteless. Soda egg drink with no condensed milk or egg at all. Tasted like a Schweppes Lime mixer drink with milk powder.

This place used to be good but I definitely won't be back. Would drive the 15km to Springvale anyday.
TitaniaApplie
I've been coming here for years. Only recently I've been sticking to the beef and tendon pho because it's best I've had so far so sticking to it. Love the Jackfruit smoothie on a hot day. Service always prompt. Pho broth is brilliant. Love it.
Scottyboggs
Friendly staff food was good a little pricey considering all the competition the SMALL friend rice was massive!!!
Luvfood
One of the better phos I've had in Melbourne, really enjoyed their soup base, also very generous with their portion size! However towards the end it got a bit too salty, left me quite thirsty the rest of the night.
ToFeedTwo
Both ordered Grilled Charcoal Chicken Phos - one with added broccoli. The broth was incredibly flavoursome & we would rate this as one of the best pho's we've had. There were no shortage of noodles!! Their menu has lots of variety - so a great place to come for a pho of your choice.

Service was friendly, fast and attentive. Ambience was simple.

Without a doubt my favourite place to have pho! Been to Vietnam many times and this restaurant is a real throwback to my trips. Great service and simple, cheap and delicious pho, can't go wrong! 🍲🍲

Best pho in Box Hill for sure! Fast efficient service. The soup base is delicious, which makes the pho so tasty and enjoyable. I had rare beef medium. Beef was thin and lean. Generous with Vietnamese basil and bean shoots. No additional seasoning needed. But if you enjoy a bit of kick, the chili sauce and/or some fresh chili is nice too.

We also had special broken rice which was also delicious. The park chop is perfectly seasoned. Can't have enough of it!
Bernard Choo
Came here with a chef. We both ordered beef pho. The stock was exquisite. Beef was tender. Bean sprouts and Vietnamese mint were aromatic. I didn't need any condiments to enjoy the food.

Came here for Sunday lunch. Was served a bowl of piping hot rare beef pho. It was yummy, and the portion was generous. The broth was tasty, but I suspected a hint of MSG as I felt thirsty afterward. Waiters were friendly and service was fast.
Filippo
I can't remember the first time I visited 888 but I know I was a very young boy. My friend and I have been coming here semi-regularly for the last 10 years. The best 3 colour drink in Box Hill, consistently good. Pho and Broken Rice are always on point. For something new try the Bún bò Huế "spicy beef" instead of the same old pho. Or request to have egg noodles in your pho, the extra bit of saltiness from the egg noodle is excellent and egg noodles are easier to eat for any chopstick beginners.
Kaypee05
Always had the grilled chicken pho and has never been disappointing. Always consistent and tasty. i always opt for take away since I don't like the dine in atmosphere there.
Hot & Spicy
Can only provide a review on the Pho but you really can't ask for much better pho. Cheap and served in a massive bowl. Much cleaner than other pho restaurants I have visited in Melbourne.
Lulumama
Really like this unassuming place. Compared to tien dat and indochine, it may lack the decor but it makes up with the flavor.
Best pho in boxhill!
Will try other dishes next time.
You can't go wrong with a large bowl of pho on a cold night for only $10! This was my first time I had experienced pho and overall I was impressed! I couldn't decide which pho to order out of the chicken breast and the rare beef so I got them both. I found that I enjoyed the rare beef a lot more as the meat was tender and overall worked so much nicer with the condiments. The chicken on the other hand was extremely chewy and over-cooked. The bowls are massive! My boyfriend ordered the medium bowl and we almost fell over from the size and he wasn't able to finish it. Overall my first pho experience was extremely satisfying!
Mrs Lavender
Actually is the best pho place in my heart , we've been trying all the famous pho place , surprisingly found out this restaurant have great pho and definitely in good price . Always order beef pho .
FOOD TRIP
Super busy pho restaurant in Box Hill. Restaurant set up is typical but their pho is actually really awesome. Would recommend if in the area. Essential Condiments for Pho. Rare Beef Rice Noodle (medium) $11. Broth was really good and tasty. Only negative was that the meat was too chewy and not tender enough. 8/10

Black list!!!
That is so disgusting!!!
We had gone here a few times over the years and had some pretty bad food. Poor Pho with no flavour, and the other menu items were pretty bad.
But for some reason this place is now about the best in the whole area outside Bayswater and Springvale.
Great Pho, lots of flavour, no skimping on the extras, friendly service.
My only complaint - please turn on the air-con, its friggin 35 degress outside and I am dripping. Its not Saigon even though it feels like it!!
Mojomomo
This is a terrible place to have pho. I can only assume that the high rating is based on...I should not speculate.

Pho is a very competitive market because it is simply hard to do too much wrong. I base my low rating on few things
1) using basil leaves that are not fresh
2) using frozen cut red chillies that is already turning black
3) soup tasted like it uses more msg than normal.
4) bean sprout is thin and malnutrition like.

Pho is still pho. I will still be able to finish the whole bowl. But for anyone who have ever eaten pho in ANY establishment in Springvale, footscray, St Albans, Richmond, Preston....I suggest you not compromise your stomach space unless you absolutely have no choice and is desperate for pho there and then.

DoeGottaEat
Pho 888 is the premier pho house in Box Hill for a reliable and reasonably priced dining experience. I have partaken in many a pho from pho 888 and have always left full and satisfied. It does not pretend to be anything other than a meeting place in which you can catch up with friends over a delicious concoction of broth, noodles, meat plus the extra toppings so vital to the pho experience. Pho 888 really nails the 1%ers and the intangibles such as the social atmosphere and friendly vibes. The pho itself is plentiful and always value for money. I rate it a yeah nah it's alright 10/10 it's more than a pho house it's a pho home.
Erndrer Merlerler
Just an all round great experience and this fine eating establishment. This is one pho house that will forever reign supreme. Heil Pho 888!!
Jermes Kermbul
From my countless visits, Pho 888 has never once delivered anything less than an outstanding meal. Great service, great food, cannot ask for much more. 10/10

Do not come here. Used to be a regular at this restaurant since it is so close and convenient. When our family went last week it was beyond the slowest serving time. I know they have changed the ownership but did not expect the taste to be so different. As a pho lover I can tell when it tastes authentic. The soup was very sweet, the serving size was the smallest I have ever eaten across Melbourne. I literally picked up all the pho in one go, it was all broken too. Worst thing was, when we went up to pay we were told it was $11 instead of $10 as the menu said. The man told us that since it is beef it is one dollar more expensive, the menu price is for chicken only. We have never had this situation dining here before and was not impressed. It was not about the one dollar extra it was the service and how they can ask you to pay what was not stated on the menu. Overall very disappointing experience will not come here again.
JKGasMan
Reasonable pho available here. Quick service, good broth and decent portions. If you can't get to Richmond or Springvale, then this place is convenient for a quick pho fix.
Update Sept 2016 : Place has been spruced up, with new decor and menus. However, quality and portions seems to have been downgraded hence the reduction in score from 4.0 to 3.0.
HatesBadFood
It's good but not great. If I'm in Box Hill and I'm craving for pho, I might consider eating here again. The soup is overly salty, the beef slices are a bit thick. One good thing about the pho here is the soup is piping hot!
Robot.tomato.space
We had broken rice dish with pork chop and a dried rice vermicelli with grilled chicken today here. Dishes were nice. Service here was friendly. They even have baby high chairs - which is always a plus when choosing a place to eat in the area like Box Hill. Will try their pho next time!
Magnum
Box Hill is blessed to have a stack of Pho choices. One of my favourites is 888. Big serving and plenty of chicken in the Pho. Quick service and the chicken seems better quality than a lot other Pho places.
Melbournian
Pho was perfectly fine, although not the best I have had. The broth lacked a bit and may not have been made in-house, not sure. There was a reasonable amount of meat though which is good.

DO NOT COME HERE! Iam not a person who writes reviews, but this restaurant was so disappointing it made me sign up to write a review and let people know about it.
I used to come here quite often, but the owner have changed and the prices have all gone up. Prices not being the big issue to me, I believe if the food quality is worth it then I dont mind paying for it. I ordered medium and small pho today, the portion was tiny, I actually picked up all the noodles with my chopstick. The noodle was hard, the vegetables given were only enough for one person. The spring rolls that we have ordered only had two pieces of lettuce and one piece was brown. I actually had 5 small pieces of beef in my pho. Not to mention, when i paid at the counter, the price was different to what it said in the menu. I was told it was 10 dollars for the small bowl (TINY), even though it said 9 dollars on the menu. I do not understand how they can charge people like this. So today the 3 of us left this restaurant paying more than we should, not even full. This is the most disappointing vietnamese restaurant I have ever been to. DO NOT GO HERE.

Pretty much just another pho joint, the broth isn't the best at this place. Being in Boxhill its easy to give this place a miss. Although nothing is terrible nothing is great either.

One Love p2p
Bluecat
Pretty ordinary Vietnamese food. Used to be better. I have to say the soup for the Pho noodles is not too bad. The special broken rice has no Wow factor to it. Like I said it's ordinary!
Zomato Dozzy
The go-too pho place of the area, quick, cheap and just what you would expect from a good pho place. I got the sliced rare beef, the broth was strong and perfectly flavoured. The beef was a fairly good grade and the condiments were very fresh. For $10 you really can't go wrong and if your within a 15 minute drive it's the place to go if your craving pho.
Mariposa
We use to be regulars here then a recent visit we sensed change! But no need to panic, it's an awesome change! I was suspicious thinking nooooo what happened to one of my favorite pho places? Then saw the new menu which has really expanded with additional new colorful dishes. The pho is still fresh, tasty and comforting as always! (Thank goodness!)!!... I really feel possessive of 888!! Especially on cold winter nights, comforting, warm and tasty- hits the spot and cures any ailments of the mind, body & soul!...

Part of the enjoyment of working in Box Hill was the location and being in very close proximity to the town centre and the numerous and very good Asian restaurants nearby. Pho 888 is definitely one of those and I'm not really sure why I didn't go there more often, probably because there was so much choice around the area. My colleagues and I would try to make the time to go out together for lunch once a fortnight and on one of these occasions we ended up at Pho 888. While some my colleagues went for a big bowl of pho or some rice paper rolls, I chose the Chicken Chop on Rice. This turned out to be an amazing—the chicken chop was a huge piece of chicken thigh butterflied out and marinated with plenty of lemongrass and other flavoursome goodness. This rendered the meat SO well flavoured and juicy while being super super charry.
LK
...did I mention at 10 bucks a bowl it is an awesomely cheap way to eat out?! Complimentary Vietnamese tea in a thermos is on the table also.

Pho 888 Box Hill on Station Street, is one of the few Vietnamese restaurants in Box Hill. Primarily serving Pho, it does have a small selection of rice dishes and entrees as well. The restaurant is one of your typical Pho joints that you may find on Victoria Street, Richmond or Springvale, how does it compare? Lets see I ordered the Beef sausage Pho just to try something a bit different (a bit unusual), the soup base lacks a bit of flavour and I also noticed they do not add coriander as a garnish to their soup. That’s not to say the soup was bland, it definitely has a nice flavour to it but compared with the greats in Melbourne, it is just a bit lacking. The plentiful of onions they add are very strong in taste, probably too much onions for my liking but some might be preferential to their generosity. The beef sausage falls apart very easily, I’m not sure how it’s made because it’s almost like eating mince meat with a bit of pepper balls as seasoning. Not the best sausage I must admi
Sweet And Sour Fork
Smoky and I’m-not-sure-if-it’s-fatty-but-it-sure-tastes-fatty, there was plenty of tender, porky goodness to go around. Even the rice that lay underneath it was flavoured with charcoal and lemongrass from the pork.
Andy Lim
Not fresh. Cheap eat..yes. Fresh ingredients...not really. Bean sprouts and carrots little off..
Emma
Before I tried this place, I wasn't sure how much I liked pho. After trying this place, I want pho all the time it's not even funny. Their 'rare beef' flavour is amazing and I need it now haha
Cheng.suen
Just average. Pho is just average. I have had something better.

Simple and satisfying. My husband and I made a quick stop here for lunch just the other day and upon reading the reviews here we ordered the Spicy Beef Noodle Soup and the Chicken Cutlet With Rice. Both dishes are highly recommended. They were really yummy and we inhaled the food before thinking about taking pictures. I expected the chicken cutlet to be an okay dish because there wasn't much said about it here but I thought it was better than the spicy noodle soup.

The restaurant is a no-fuss, simple and friendly place and the perfect for a quick but satisfying meal.

Used to be spoilt with choices when living close to Footscray. This one is not bad at all! Priced reasonably and the taste I miss

Spicy Beef (Bun Bo Hue). New item on the menu at Pho888

-----24 Dec, 2014-----

Pho. Spicy Beef Noodle Soup (Bun Bo Hue)

-----24 Dec, 2014-----

Spicy Beef Noodle Suop. The other I came back to Pho888 to get my weekly fix of rare beef pho. The staff there introduced me to a new item on the menu, its called Spicy Beef (Bun Bo Hue). Love it, it has sliced beef, Hue style ham, tendon and white round noodles. The broth is unbelievable, a little red in colour, with a kick of chilli and lemon grass flavour in it. Definitely be back for more of this Bun Bo Hue.

Good food. Dinner last night (cold and blustery) so what could be better than Pho??? Answer nothing! The kids ordered spring rolls and fried rice. The spring rolls disappeared in an instant and the rice was declared to be "sour" and for the first time ever was left on the plate. Our Pho was lovely, I had the Black Peppercorn sausage with rare beef and chicken, DH had the rare beef and chicken, BFF had chicken and BFF's partner had the crispy chicken. All dishes were lovely to look at and great to eat. It is never going to be the classiest joint in town, but at these sorts of prices no complaints are going to be made by us. Give it a chance it is good food at a reasonable price

Delicious pho. Not a huge menu but you wouldn't want to order anything other than their pho, and maybe a side of yummy spring rolls. HUGE portion, great value and amazingly flavoursome. The staff are really friendly and helpful and the pho really will entice you back

Really delicious, yum broth and the sliced chicken has no fatty or stringy bits. Best pho I've ever had

My absolute favourite pho joint in Melbourne! They just updated their menu so looking forward to trying some new dishes. But you cannot beat their rare beef pho!

In the past my review I said the pho was consistent but I was wrong. Sometimes it's amazing and sometimes it's kind of bland. It was especially bland on Mother's Day a couple of years ago when it was really busy I assume they ran out of stock and quickly made another which we were unfortunate to have. I've been back after and it's been good. I went back tonight and got the grilled chicken both of my friends got the crispy chicken. It was strange because the broth of one of the crispy chicken's was darker then the other. I tried the lighter one and it didn't have the flavour you expect for pho. My friends didn't like that the chicken wasn't cut up for them like in the menu picture. My pho was delicious and the broth had a charred taste from the chicken which I liked. I ordered a 3 colour drink and whilst it tasted good the green jelly things were all stuck together. I also noticed that they've done up the place by putting a wallpaper with a nice photo of rice fields and some tacky light shades. I didn't recognise anyone tonight so I don't know if they've changed owners. The menu is also more extensive then it used to be. I'll probably still come here if I feel like pho but can't be bothered traveling to Richmond or Springvale (which is most of the time) I may also give Miss Saigon another chance.

This place is packed every night of the week so decided to try it for myself. I had the beef and BF had the beef with the lot (including tripe) both were delicious! Recommend this place as a great place for beginners and those a bit more experienced wanting to try something authentic - this is as close as I have come to the real thing since Vietnam. Would go back

Fast service, cheap prices, big servings and great quality. I find some Asian restaraunts in box hill to have some rude staff but not this place, they are extremely polite and helpful. Everytime I eat here I'm never dissapointed, I always leave with a smile.

Really quick service. High quality breast chicken in pho. Tasty and fresh ingredients. Decor old and daggy but overall - good quality cheap pho served in a few minutes. Would recommend.

Traditional pho. Good place for pho in area. They open from 9am , trust me pho is good for brunch in weekend! I ordered small bowl - they weren't generous with th meat, so next time I'll just order medium
Broth okay- not laden with MSG, just savourary enough .

Decent Pho, Good Service.. There are better Pho than Pho 888, but only in other areas, given the sparse Vietnamese resturants in Box Hill (Box Hill being mainly Chinese), there is also naturally a sparse options for Pho, as far as I recall, there was only 1 or 2 other Pho sellers in Box Hill.

If you are in Box Hill, Pho 888 is one of your sparse options for Pho. The Pho itself is actually very very decent. Its not bad by any standard, but it's almost not the best. My standard of bad is MSG-laden, generic 'soup powder' which is able to distinguish by a mile. However, Pho 888 seems to have put effort into their stock using actual real ingredients like most other Pho retailers, and I can say this is a stock (no pun intended) Pho retailer with the same prices ($9 for medium, at time of writing). Out of 10, their Special combo beef Pho would be roughly an 8 or 8.5. However they only have beef and chicken variants of Pho (as per their logo), there are no other exotic varieties like Cambodian Kuy-theav (Cambodian version of rice noodles).

Everytime Im in Box Hill, I would not be hesistant to go again. Their service was also good. I would recommend this place, if you are in Box Hill and in need of a Pho fix.

Yum. 10/10 for the food and service! Not the classiest joint but a great spot for a quick, cheap, delicious meal.

Disappointing. After looking forward to the Pho here I was left disappointed. There are only chicken & beef options but when I asked I was told they could make a vegetable Pho (vegetarians beware there is no vegetarian stock option). The Pho contained rice noodles, tofu and broccoli - that's it, not another vegetable in sight! The picture of the menu shown is the extent of the menu except for a few specials. With so many Vietnamese restaurants in the area to choose from I wouldn't return to this one.
