This is definitely the place to go if your after really good pho or grilled lemongrass chicken. I've come here many times and if I lived in Box Hill I would be here all the time.
Tonight, the service was super fast, and the food was on point as always. The chicken was grilled well and had such a lovely lemongrass flavour.
The prices are also affordable, and the service is friendly. Will keep returning for years.
The arctic blast has hit Melbourne and with it a serious case of man flu. Taking a lead from my friends, I sought a dose of my Vietnamese "penicillin" chicken pho. I have been visiting the Richmond and Springvale outlets of Pho 888 for over 20 years but this was my first trip to the Box Hill branch.
In addition to the usual chicken and beef, I see that Pho 888 has branched into a number of variations of pho including seafood, grilled chicken and crispy pork as well as banh mi and the usual rice paper rolls and spring rolls. I'm happy to report that in expanding the menu,Pho 888 has maintained their high standards on their traditional offerings.
My special chicken pho was a salty, umami, life affirming bowl of rice noodles, various chicken "bits" and broth. I could feel the man flu dissipating as I slurped my noodles! One minor gripe: there probably could have been a few more chicken "bits".
Great broth! Very well balanced. Perfect for a winters day. The large is very large. I’d go small. Large would be good to share with your kids. Spring rolls were a bit on the thin side. But still nice.
Seldom would you find a Vietnamese restaurant in the predominantly Chinese demographic of Box Hill, rarer yet to find one of such exemplary quality and refined taste. Although located a further 50m down Station st, do not allow its segregation from Box Hill Central deter you from sampling its fresh and authentic Vietnamese cuisine.
The simple and pleasant vibe is ideal for a quick lunch between coworkers or an afternoon snack after school, do not expect wine glasses and hors d'oeuvres - this is not what Vietnamese street food is about. Although typically eaten for breakfast in Vietnam, the phở at Pho 888 is served all day along with a wide variety of toppings including rare beef, beef balls and tripe, just to name a few. Dishes including cơm tấm (broken rice), bún bò huế (hot beef and pork noodle soup) and bún thịt nướng (vermicelli salad) are also available for warmer days.
An ample platter of bean sprouts, fresh chilli, lemon, and Thai basil is served with your phở in true Southern Vietnamese style. Do not hesitate to request more spring onion and white onion, as they will happily comply with a small bowl.
The beef broth is simmered for several hours to produce a clear and fragrant soup - the rich and fatty beef flavour is perfectly complemented with hints of charred ginger and cinnamon along with a variety of other spices that tingle the tongue without being overpowering. The rice noodles are soft and velvet-like, while the meat is tender and plentiful.
Perhaps the only downside to an otherwise unblemished Pho 888 is the lack of any non-cash payment methods; albeit you will find many atms close by. However, at least for myself, withdrawing cash at Box Hill has become synonymous with an impending feast at Pho 888 - admittedly a Pavlovian response, but a welcome one to say the least!
We enjoyed the vermicelli with spring rolls, the vermicelli with grilled chicken and some prawn rice paper rolls. For drinks the Thai milk tea and the three colour drink. Food is delicious as always. On occasion they get the order wrong but who doesn’t make mistakes?
Have been taking the kids to the restaurant for a few years now.. They loved the pho, prawn spring rolls and rice paper rolls. But the only problem we had is sometimes they put through the wrong order and is a hassle to make them re-do the dishes again so we end up eating it anyway. Other than that, the staff are pretty friendly and comfortable seating.
The pho is pho-fect! Order the rare beef pho if you’re feeling adventurous (to try rare beef in your hot noodle soup) or get the beef brisket + beef balls if you’re playing it safe. The rice vermicelli with chicken was “meh” (1.5⭐️). pro - the chicken tasted like satay (👌🏼). con - there were too much bean sprout for my liking. Eat there for a great and satisfying experience. Taking it away was less satisfying at the soup was too little! EAT THERE for a pho-tastic time 😋
Unfortunate for this restaurant is its location being tucked away at the end of the shopping strip on Station St. Having said that this place is the best Vietnamese food you can get around Box Hill central. Service is not great as you might expect but that's how you know it's genuine! Inside it is also quite dark and gloomy. However the pho and its broth are very hearty and everything you'd want in a pho. Price a little higher than average but for what you get it is worth it.
I hadn't been to this restaurant in months. I ordered my usual which was the medium beef and tendon pho. The broth has always been a huge draw card for me out of all the other restaurants I'd had pho, and it was still as brilliantly delicious.
This is my happy meal. It was generous, delicious and reliable. That's why I'll always come back.
Good option for a quick meal of pho when you’re on the go. Prefer the chicken breast as the thigh is fatty. I always get the meat spring rolls to complement the meal. The grilled chicken vermicelli is yummy and the chicken reminds me of satay chicken we get back home. Reasonably priced for Box Hill and you get a decent amount of meat😋
Authentic rare beef pho. Service was good. Some of the rare beef a bit overcooked. The broken rice is nice but portion size could be bigger. Cash-only is a problem in a pandemic. Prefer contactless payment.
Consistent, authentic Vietnamese food. Always a great option to eat in Box Hill.
The best Vietnamese Pho which do not have msg. Try the beef & pork combination. The spring rolls is tasty & at affordable price. They have lots of other type of rice dishes, etc.
Good BBH & pho. Service a bit slower than other pho shops. Takes cash only. Place is clean and toilets well maintained.
Really tasty pho. The grilled pork was pretty amazing and I have never seen grilled pork pho before. Worth a try.
The crispy pork was also very nice but a little
Salty. So if you like salty things you’ll be in heaven
Overall very tasty and a very good price
Plenty of up and down reviews, but we've been coming here for years (over 15 years at least) and keep coming back. Food is good, prices are decent (not as cheap as they used to be, but still good value), and service is quick. We regularly get the pho, bun, and spring rolls.
