Review Fountains Restaurant - Box Hill

A friend in the know invited me out to Fountains Restaurant in Box Hill. We had a fantastic meal and enjoyed the lovely decor and ambience. My dietary needs were accommodated without fuss. The cocktails were delicious and I highly recommend the 'nutty daiquiri'. Service was friendly and professional. A fabulous experience!

Fine dining for a very reasonable price. 3 course meal is $25 + drinks (reasonably priced as well)

Interestingly to see trainees getting valuable on the job experience. Ordered the $25 three course meal for lunch. The food was generally ok. Staff were accomodating for our dietary needs. Some of our orders got a little mixed up but understandable as it is only the beginning of the term. Overall it was a pleasant experience.

I normally love this restaurant, and I would usually give them 5/5 stars, but the last time I went there brought the standards down. I ordered the three course meal, as well as a hot chocolate. The croquet's were inconsistent, the waiter had his thumb over the rim of the plate (this is a serious no-no in the hospitality business!), and the waiters all huddled together while my hot chocolate was being called for service - they just ignored it and let my hot chocolate go lukewarm, not stay hot. I went with my grandmother and she can't handle chilli. I didn't expect for a salad to come with her main meal, let alone to be dress with chilli, so I didn't think to ask for them to leave it off. I assumed that because the menu didn't list a salad or containing chilli, I just assumed that it'd come with what's listed, no additives. I know it's not something someone is usually intolerant to.

This is a restaurant inside Box Hill TAFE as part of learning for TAFE students. The menu changes each term. Check their website for what’s available. Great value food with high standard service. For $25 you get a 3 course meal prepared by students and services by students. A reasonable range of cocktails for only $8, wines are very reasonably priced too.

Highly recommend.

This restaurant is Box Hill's secret gem. Parking is a problem, however I believe that they have their own dedicated car park around the corner.
We started with an appetiser - beautiful and fresh. Our entree was amazing. The squid was soft and with a soft batter that we were surprised. The eye fillet (tornadoes) was delicious - fresh and cooked to perfection. The jus was amazing as was the vegetables. Our desserts were fabulous. $25.00 for the 3 courses were amazing value and quality. Could not fault the service.
So impressed was I, that I have booked our AGM lunch here for 57 people. No doubt everyone will be impressed. Great management of the students. I was impressed.

Very Fine Dining and Excellent Service on a Budget.. This is a training restaurant for the Box Hill Institute. The Hospitality and Cooking school use the restaurant as a place to develop, practice and assess their skills, and we are the winners too. I have been here a few times over the years and I am always impressed by the enthusiasm of the students and the quality of the food. The restaurant is tastefully decorated, and would not look out of place as a venue for some of the finest dining in Melbourne.

Of course, as the students are learning, there may be a couple of misses, however being a hungry guinea pig here is a great experience. Overall, every meal I have had here has been memorable.

The quality of the food is right at the top end of fine dining, both in terms of quality and presentation.

On our latest visit we had: “Grilled Prawn Burger with 3 times fried chips” which was uniquely original and simply awesome. The “Gado Gado” could beat some of the best I have had overseas. For desert the “Grilled Peach, honey ricotta, lavender sugar” and “Frozen chocolate parfait, hazel nuts, liqueur, salted caramel” were exceptional.

The only real downer is that the restaurant is only open on weekdays for lunch and only on Mondays, Tuesday’s and Thursdays. (This can change throughout the year so check the Box Hill TAFE website)

You won't experience dining like this in many places in Melbourne for such a bargain.

It should be every Foodies Bucket List

My friends and I went to Fountains Restaurant for lunch a few months ago. The first thing I should say is that the menu and service at this restaurant are top quality as it is a training restaurant for the box hill tafe students studying hospitality. As soon as we arrived we were served warm bread rolls which were the type you get in any fine dining restaurant. We then all had the tasting plate for mains as it contained a small portion of the four items they had on their seasonal menu. Being pregnant and also allergic to seafood there were a few things that I couldn't eat, and they did not hesitate to offer replacement items for those. For the price we paid the serving size was extremely generous, and the plating and taste were what you would expect in any fine dining restaurant. The desserts were also of the same quality being just the right size and presented really nicely. All in all I would say it was an excellent experience and the only downside is that it's only open Mon - Fri for lunch, I would have loved to take my family and friends for dinner sometime. They do however do functions and I will be definitely considering this restaurant next time I organise one :)
