We went to Hills BBQ on a Friday night for dinner. There were a few tables of diners and plenty of space. The thing which I noticed first was that the floor was pretty oily and needed a good clean. The interior of the restaurant is dated too. Immediately after sitting down the waitress asks if we want to order lobster. We order a lobster fried with noodles, spring onion and garlic. They bring the whole live lobster to us for us to approve of the size before they cook it. The lobster meat was sweet, meaty and tender. The noodles were drenched in the thick gingery sauce. It was a delicious dish though I would have preferred it to have a punchier, stronger ginger and garlic flavour. We also ordered garlic fried dou miao which was fried well and still crunchy. We also ordered a fried rice. The rice was fried well with wok hei taste (breath of the wok), very tasty. Service was great - the waiter kept changing plates for us to put our lobster shells whilst we were eating the lobster. Will be back to try their other dishes.
I was pleasantly surprised that Hill's BBQ had a whole roasted pig on their menu. It was very well prepared with the all important skin resembling more like pork crackling rather than the classic thin crispy skin...but I'm not complaining! The skin was addictively crispy and delicious. The meat was moist and tender. The hoi sin sauce went perfectly with the meat. While it was quite costly, this dish was truly satisfying.
Go see Nick and his team for the best Chinese food in Box Hill. His team is service and detail orientated. Highly recommend. Thanks for dinner and a great night, 10/10!
Amazing food! Bbq pork is amazing, it's a must have!
I’ve been to this place with my family many times. The crabs mixed with ox sauce noodles is such a delicious combination. Went here with family and this dish is the best!
This is no frills dining at its best, again service at this type of restaurant is abrupt at best (very rarely would you get a smile), but the meats were lovely and succulent, and the value was told too. I recommend the roast duck
Had dinner here on a winter night after returning from a ski trip. Ordered some chicken congee, preserved egg and pork congee, Chinese donut, dry wonton noodles, roast duck and chicken corn soup. Very satisfying meal. Fast and efficient service, if not overly friendly.
Come here all the time! The roast duck is the best thing here and never fails to keep my tummy happy. If you come at off peak times you get the best parts of the duck too.
A very casual joint that makes you feel like you’re in Hong Kong 😋
My husband who grew up in the area recommend this restaurant. Staffs talk to you in Chinese (I'm Japanese and I've got Asian look), but once they find out you don't speak their language they'll talk in English. Food was good, generous portion. I'd go back.
中国に来たかのような雰囲気とサービスが楽しく、ご飯の味もよく、コスパがよいです。
The best roasted duck with noodle soup I've ever had! Everytime I come here with my partner I always order this same dish when I'm craving for roast duck. They give so much that I can't even finish it.
The best, the greatest, the ultimate, the one and only, the reason you come here, the signature dish, what they have cooked from the mystery box challenge, THE ABSOLUTE NO. 1 DISH YOU NEED TO ORDER FROM HERE IS THE CRISPY EGG NOODLES WITH BEEF AND VEG. YOU CAN THANK ME LATER, GAME CHANGER.
Sometimes when it's early in the week you just want to go to a place for a reliable dinner where the waiters aren't all chirpy and falling over themselves asking 'how was your day?'
That's where Hills comes in. You may need to raise your hand twice to get your tea refilled; but the trade off is that the food comes quickly, hot and as expected.
For the vast majority of visits, I have only ever ordered two or three different dishes when I've been to Hills regularly over the paste fifteen years.
For two people, it's great to get two serves of the Peking Duck Pancakes (4 pieces) and then have a main with steamed rice. 90% of the time I've gone with the prawns with seasonal vegetables; to which the chilly oil on the table gives the required fire for those wanting it.
Service = 3.5 (see notes above)
Roast Duck = 4.5
Overall - 4/5
This place has really nice food, the waiters are attentive and food is served here reasonably fast! I always come here after a late night or before a big night in town to fill my belly with delicious food! My go to dishes are the combination noodle soup with flat rice noodles (hor fun) warms the belly, the roast meat (can choose BBQ Pork, Roast Pig, Soy Chicken or Roast Duck) on dry noodles is super delicious, congee, and their wok fried noodles are just divine! No need to book either can just walk in unless you have a big group.
Came here a few times over the years, some of those with a friend who knew the boss. So naturally when they brought the food we got a bit more in quantity. Even so I still have to be honest in the review. I mainly got the roast duck when I came here cos well I love roast duck ok. But the roast duck here was quite average, mainly due to a lack of flavour and crispiness in the skin. Service and decor are both old school - take from that what you will hehe.
But having said that I haven't had any other dishes from its vast and varied selection; and from personal anecdotes of friends who have frequented this long established restaurant... Well it has stood the test of time for a reason.
You don't come here for service, or for a place to catch up with friends. You just come here for a good old fashioned chinese meal, quick and dirty, and definitely tasty! Can't go wrong with the wonton noodle soup or the roast pork/crispy pork rice. Open until 2 AM so can go whenever really!
Fast and furious chinese food. Lots to choose from. Suckling pig and soy sauce chicken are cheap and filling. The hot and sour soup is excellent. 5 stars.
We come here to have Lamb hot pot when it’s cold in Melbourne, a 20 minutes drive from home, it’s one of the best Asian restaurants in the local area.
Food was satisfying, delicious and beautiful!
We’ve been regulars here for many years and that won’t change. :)
Recommend ordering off the rice or noodle dishes - I always get the honey glazed bbq pork with egg noodles! Simply the best Hong Kong style food
What I love about this place is it’s opened until 2am. We came here on 1am because we just finished watching concert and we were starving.
We ordered Beef with Seasonal Vegetable on Rice and Salted Dried Fish Chicken Cube on Rice and they taste better than I expected. Because this place looks a big dodgy on the outside but turns out they serve a great food. Plus their food are pretty affordable with the generous portion. But I think the staffs are not that friendly though
I love this place. Forget that the interior looks a bit dirty and outdated.
What you want is a plate of dry egg noodles and roast meat for $11. The roast meat could be honey glazed pork, crispy skin pork, soya sauce chicken, roast duck or suckling pig. All good options. It simple, honest and delicious.
The price may be the lowest among the same kind of restaurants and the taste is good as well. But some waiters are rude to the customers especially when you don’t speak Cantonese.
I've always been past but never eaten here given my parents don't really rate it. Came here with a group of friends and we all had a great time. The standout is the chicken ribs and the crispy noodles.
The Hills BBQ Noodle Shop provides really cheap duck in a large portion. I go here often with my dad😭 For his strong asian taste, this is the only place he will be happy to come again and again other than Korean restaurants. Food is good too although personally fried noodle was too crunchy😬
Overall, the go to place for asian parents 😂
Best roast duck and crispy pork in the area! Cheap and large portions. One of the most authentic Chinese restaurants, feels like Asia inside.
LIT! The service here was so quick. We had so many dishes and my favourite would have to be (surprisingly) the salad and fried chicken. However all the dishes we had was flavourful.
NOT SO LIT: we had 10 people and it was pretty squishy but very minor critique.
Thank you for the delicious meal! X
Authentic cantonese cuisine for very reasonable prices. Fast service. Open till 2am daily for night owls and vampires alike. The bbq meats menu is recommended.
I have eaten many times at Hills BBQ growing up. In recent years I haven't visited as much, not because the quality has changed but because of so many new places to try out. It was only until yesterday where I visited again and had an excellent family dinner.
Highlights would be:
1) Tomato and beef stir fry - very homely and honest dish. Not overly sweet which is good.
2) Stir fry greens - didn't have that reused oil taste which some Asian restaurants use. Instead, it had a nice subtle garlic flavor which was perfect
3) Dumpling noodle soup with lettuce - again, simple and honest food.
Also, I was happy that after the meal I wasn't thirsty at all meaning minimal or no msg used ✔✔
I've been coming here for 12 years, and it really hasn't changed much, which is quite an impressive feat in itself. Anyway, food is good, service is prompt, old mate is a legend.
My top picks are 肉絲炒麵 and 滑蛋牛肉飯。v nice
Reasonable price with reasonable portion. If you're looking for a place to eat to be full at the right place - this place is pretty good! Love the duck here compare to other duck in Boxhill...
I love Hills BBQ, it's this deliciously Box Hill corner shop on Station St, which serves a myriad of Asian meals for a bargain. The biggest bonus is that it seems to be always available for your miscellaneous times eating needs!
Have been here after all manners of late night shifts and could always count on some roast pork/char siew/roast duck on rice or noodle, or a noodle soup dish!
Decent fare, and always reliably there for you!
x
Look, you're not coming here for the decor or the service (though both are acceptable). If you're only going to judge by these measures then Hills may not be for you. You come to Hills because food is authentic, the roast duck/pork rice is addictive, the combo fried noodles is amazing, and you will never go home hungry.
Came here because it was the only restaurant opened late at night (which is great, I love places with late trading hours as I'm a night owl).
Being late on a weekday, it was pretty quiet so staff were sort of just hovering around and staring at our table as we ate. This made us a little uncomfortable but we enjoyed the food nonetheless. Roast pork was good.
We ordered Soy Chicken rice and Roasted Duck rice with Siew yok. Portion was huge. Wasn't expecting much, but the soy chicken was really good. Well balanced. Not too sweet not too salty. Comparable to those in Hong Kong! Roasted duck was good too. Siew yok was really juicy and fatty! Will def be back
We only had the suckling pig with rice and it's not amazing or outstanding but tasted nice. It was a busy night but we got the food in no time.
Food is really good, a bit on the oily side, for taste i'd give it a 5 star,
price is a bit high compared to other close by asian/chinese cuisine, hard to justify almost $19 for a standard take away container for stir fry beef + vegies.
I've been coming to Hills BBQ for around 20 years. I still dine here frequently (lately once per week). I've invited a huge range of guests here on a number of occasions, for 2am suppers with friends to meetings with business associates. Most people are missing the point when they dine at Hills. Highlights include Char Siu and Siu Yuk, Roast Duck, XO pippies with Chinese Donut, Chicken ribs in salted egg yolk batter, Sliced pork belly and mustard leaf, Beef flanks (brisket), string beans with mince pork and XO. I could go on. In my opinion the level of service is adequate, if I want some hipster making small talk to me while I munch on over priced smashed avocado I can do that somewhere else. My order is taken competently, my food comes quickly, my tea is refilled, you are in the wrong place if you're expecting silver service here.
Succulent Roast Duck, Crispy Pork & tender Char Siu. Most dishes here are served promptly and good value for money. Great place for a quick bite.
Having finished our road trip very late at night (approximately 9pm), we weighed up our options and headed to Box Hill for some late night Chinese food. Friends have told me that Box Hill in Melbourne is the equivalent of Sunnybank in Brisbane. With that assurance in mind, we went to have our dinner at Hills Chinese.

I was in the Box Hill area on a Monday night, so I decided to have dinner here with a mate. Box Hill has always been well known for its Asian atmosphere, and Hills BBQ Noodle Shop is in a prime location right next to Box Hill Central - across the road and just above the underground pass. The entrance is mildly decorated with traditional Chinese decor. Their traditional specials and their prices are written in Chinese characters in chalk next to the front door. Duck on rice on a Monday night sounded good to us.
The restaurant was not very crowded, and we were directed to a booth in the corner. The waiter took our order and brought us glasses of tea. It was a normal sized glass, not those tiny little yumcha sized cups. I was quite thankful for that, as I was quite parched.
My Roast Duck On Rice (烧鸭饭) arrived first. I was thoroughly pleased with the serving size for ten dollars! It was definitely more than any serve that I have ever had in the Preston area. Two rows of roast duck resting on a spread of bok choi leaves laid atop on a bed of rice, which had already been seasoned with the duck sauce.
The roast duck here definitely lives up to its name. Fresh, tasty and fleshy in all the right places. It was NOT dowsed in oil that would have made me feel sick afterwards, which I was thankful for. I was also glad to see the bok choi was composed mostly of leaves and minimal stalk, which made it easy and pleasant to eat. Since the rice had already been seasoned with the duck sauce, there was no need to mix anything - another small factor that just made the dish all the more enjoyable. The amount of rice they gave me was quite generous and filling.
My friend ordered the Soy Duck Rice, which arrived shortly after mine. Same ingredients, just cooked in a different manner. His dish had noticeably less duck than mine did - he only had about 60% of my quantity. His bok choi also had considerably more stalks and less leaves than mine, which somewhat annoyed him. His portion of rice was still equally as generous as mine was, and had also already been seasoned with the same duck sauce as mine did. After eating, I noticed that his duck had less bones than mine did. Perhaps that was a fair trade off. Since he was not a very big eater, he was quite content with his meal.
When we were footing the bill, a 1.5% surcharge on credit card was applied. Not surprising, since most of these Asian Restaurants prefer to tend in cash. Nevertheless, I still dislike paying surcharges.
This restaurant does its single dishes well. They understand that patrons want to walk out with a satisfied feeling and a full stomach - which is exactly what they deliver by having tasty and generous portions. If I want a filling experience around the ten dollar mark, I will definitely come back to this place.
Good bbq meat place in Box Hill! Roast pork and BBQ pork are the best. No fuss ordering, meat by the weight is quick and cheap.
Staff can be rude and watch them load your meat as the middle aged woman with short hair has ripped us off before by giving us mostly heavy bones in a 500g box.
This is a great restaurant for straight forward Cantonese food in central Box Hill. We had a noodle dish and hor fun and they were both very tasty.
Our go-to place for Roast duck on dry noodle. Portion is generous, cheap and taste good! Their chilli oil is nice too! Don't expect to get a super friendly service, but do enjoy their food. We've been coming here for at least 7 years now, and never had bad experience. Recently we tried their Banana fritter, which we highly recommended 😉
Old time favourite. Still pretty good. Not a roast meat fan but friends have always commented their roast meat is good. I like their meaty wantons. Big portion. Fast service. Value for money!
Value for money... a mountain of rice with good cuts of duck with ample sauce drizzled around the rice--- really yummy duck...juicy and well textured.
For the price paid for a single serving of duck rice it is definitely economical and worth a try
Hills BBQ noodle shop is what I imagine to be 1950s American diner meets Hong Kong street cafe, transported into 2015, minus a much-needed renovation. BBQ meats hang in the front entrance - a telltale sign that I will probably enjoy myself, although the area needs a good clean.
All of seats are ripped and the shop looks run down, with smatterings of hand-written paper signage - some with pricing (eg. meat /kg $); some decorative calligraphy - adorning the walls. My mind wondered to the Bob The Builder themesong: "can we fix it?...... yes we can!"
This is the second time I've visited in the past couple of years and the prices seem to have risen a bit. There are two menus - I guess one for the "gweilos" with (what is now) overpriced mains at around $18-23; and the "Chinese" menu with meals for around $10-13. I ordered from both.
We had the home made dim sims which were uninspiring balls of meat covered in a tofu-like white skin - 5/10, followed by the Peking duck skin rolls which were well balanced and contained tender and tasty duck meat, although the wrap itself was a little dry - 7/10 (would have been an 8 with fresher wrap), followed by a serve each of the wonton soup - a tasty broth with succulent pork mince and prawn balls - 7/10.
For mains we had the combination with fried noodles - a huge serving of slices of pork, fish cake, beef, bok choi and a single lonely prawn, covered in gravy, on a bed of fried egg noodles. The dish had a slightly smokey flavour from the blackened edges of the crisped noodles - 6/10 - and great value at $13 (enough for 2-3ppl with starters).
The food is by no means the best I've had, it's average, but it seems authentic. This is definitely more Cantonese cafe than your run-of-the-mill suburban restaurant. And it's bustling with a high turnover - think of it as a predecessor to the China Bar chain.
I would rate 6/10 for food; 7/10 for service; 3/10 for ambience; 1/10 for decor.
My favourite part was the a casually-dressed head server, with flowing blonde hair which he would regularly flick back, who looks like he could be an Asian pop star. He upped the ambience score.
Now the reason why I rate this place 4 stars overall is because of the price: $28 for 2 people, including Chinese tea and BYO wine
.....and no EFTPOS/credit card surchage
.....and we took home half of the noodles because we were full.
.....and they didn't try to kick us out as soon as we'd finished our meals despite a small spend (unheard of!)
Really, you can't beat that.
A longtime neighbourhood haunt for authentic but cheap and no-fuss Cantonese food. Let's be straight here: the place has needed renovation for years, the service is patchy until you're regulars like my family are, and the presentation of the food itself can be inconsistent and often inelegant. But you've missed the point if you expect that kind of thing. You're here for the flavourful roasts and piping hot stir fries served in characteristically large portions, which you wolf down at midnight while watching the trashy Hong Kong television playing above. Also, if you stray from the trodden path of noodles and rice, there are some real hidden gems contained deep in the menu, even if they do cost a bit more.
I drive 45 minutes each way just to eat here. Then I park by the train line in the back street, drag my kids along even in the freezing cold.
Is it because the service is good? Nope, really basic level of that. Does it have really nice decor? HELL NO!
This is a basic hole in the wall establishment that serves BBQ Cantonesse. It's old, ugly and I don't care!!! It's the best damn Cantonese I can find in in Australia. I order the same thing each time. But I have on the odd occasion tried the duck, which is good, noodle soup which is great, the minced beef & egg with fried rice, also great. These by way are some of the more popular dishes here including the crab specials they have too. Which oh yes are good too.
But I just can't get past the beef & Chinese vegetable with flat rice noodles. I order this here each time because no matter where I go I cannot find its equal. They make this dish the best here. See photo I attached so you can recognise it. It may not look pretty but tastes bloody amazing. Actually now that I have just discussed it I will no doubt make my way to Hills in the very near future for some more.
Where was I? I digressed. Oh who cares? Most of the crowd in this restaurant is Chinese. Only reconfirming, that for Chinese cuisine you have hit the mother load.
Extremely affordable, great for a quick bite. And if like me, who loves Chinese it's worth the drive every time.
This place is a gem, you can find some serious deliciousness here if you know your way around the menu. I enjoy hills the most by myself at 11pm after An epic shift.
A fat plate of crispy noodles with BBQ pork smashed with chilli oil is were its at for me.
Don't bother eating here if your looking for silver service, in fact avoid box hill all together if that's what your after
Hills BBQ has been around for as long as I remember, we used to go here for lunch after Chinese School on the weekend, depressing times I know. It's been a few years since I've visited, and nothing's really changed.
Best Crispy Pork, Bbq Pork and Roast Duck in Box Hill! Been dining her since I was a kid! Nice cheap eats here and for the good price don't expect high level of service.
Crispy Noodle with Beef and Vegetables is the Winner!. Very yummy foods and the service was okay considering the price, will definitely come back for my next supper.
Authentic, no frills Chinese food. The people I came with have been coming here for 15 years and claim that nothing has changed. Even the staff doesn’t seem to age.
The food was legit, very traditional. I didn’t choose any of the dishes we ordered, but everything was tasty. The service was straightforward, don’t expect anything more.
If you’re looking for the real deal but are ok with cheap decor and basic customer service, this is a solid choice.
Best sizzling in Melbourne it’s hot it has great presentation with the sizzling plate!!!! Highly recommended Cantonese style noodles with Braised Beef Brisket, tender and juicy, noodles were high protein Cantonese style eggs noodles! Tomato 🍅 beef with rice was incredible as well!! And congee!
Best of the best in Melbourne. Very decent price! Each rich with meat only takes 13 dollars. Not to mention their takeaway steamed bun(custard bun/ BBQ pork bun), it’s nothing like the other cheap no authentic bun else where, it’s genuine authentic and fresh!
Definitely beyond expectations.
Special Ordered the drunken chicken hot pot for our family gathering, perfect for these winter nights. Always come back for old fashion Cantonese food. Super happy customer.
Delicious food, great for the price and good atmosphere
The best lamb brisket pot in box hill. Great customer service. Will definitely comeback again
Have loved this place for decades! I always but my roast meats here to take to family dinners!
Cannot go past the crispy noodles with beef and vegetables! It is a my friends and family's go to quick, cheap and easy eat!
