If you don't mind walking a little outside of boxhill central, this bakery gem is worth your visit. Each bun is lovingly made with attention to detail and flavour. The buns are even prepacked in a plastic wrap of a triangle manner so it doesnt touch the bun fillings, so u just pick and go:)

A lovely little Taiwanese bakery, with cafe. Exceptional range of handmade bakery products, and a small menu of meals, including authentic Taiwanese noodle soups, with hand made noodles. Exceptionally friendly and healthy staff. This place feels cozy and homely. Highly recommended.

Due to stage 4 lockdowns, we were unable to pick up a cake and deliver it to mum. I spoke to a staff (owner?) Justin and asked if they do delivery. He said no but he was happy to do this as a special for us. Mum was so surprised and extremely happy to get her durian fix. They said the durian cake was fresh, moist and delicious as usual. Thanks for making her day. Great service :)

Famous for Taiwanese specialties, the place is known for their pastries and local Taiwanese dishes such as Beef Bowl (Ru Rou Fan), Savory Soymilk, Homemade Soymilk, Egg Pancake, and much more.

Loved how they have local Taiwanese dishes not usually served in normal Chinese restaurants. I haven’t seen the savory soymilk with fried Chinese doughnuts since I was in Taiwan 4 years ago! Makes me so nostalgic.

Loved the soymilk 1L I bought home. It’s homemade and fresh.

The prices are affordable as well. Perfect for an easy, quick, casual meal when you’re craving for some authentic Asian food.

Grand Taipei Bakery is famous for their pineapple tarts and baked pastries, but those are not the only things that they excel in. Specialising in Taiwanese snacks such as scallion pancake, sticky rice, beef roll, savoury soy milk and the likes, this is a great place to grab a cheap and cheerful meal.

The savoury soy milk is my favourite. Can be an acquired taste as most people are more familiar with sweet soy milk, but the savoury version is just as delicious. Topped with Chinese doughnuts, spring onions and chilli oil, it’s akin to drinking a soup, although a not very aesthetically pleasing one.

The Chinese omelette is a great snack to share, and can be ordered wrapped around Chinese doughnuts. For those who are after a more substantial meal, there are rice and noodle dishes available such as fried pork cutlet with rice, and braised pork with rice.

One of my favourite places to frequent whenever I am in Box Hill, and it has proven to stand the test of time.

My rating: 4.5

Grand Taipei Bakery has withstand the time of severe changes to Box Hill over the years, and yet they're still there which proves to show that they are strong. Given the fact that Bread Top would be their biggest competitor however having said that, the types of bread and cakes Grand Taipei makes are slightly different to mainstream Asian bakeries which does make a huge difference. Grand Taipei are traditional Taiwanese bakery and they make their own cakes and bread in the shop and it has been the same for the last 25 years since I first discovered this place. I dont believe ownership has changed but still stays within the family business. It is authentic and very home-style feel.

Although the exterior of the shop looks tired and worn but it still is exactly the same bakery as 25 years ago when I first visited and over the years have once in a while popped in to eat or purchase their yummy bread and cakes.

🔆LOCATION🔆

Grand Taipei Bakery is located on the busy main street of Box Hill - Station Street, between Whitehorse Road and Bank Street.

The interior of the shop has also remained the same, no change at all. But you know sometimes its not about the look of the shop but the quality of the food that matters.

There is plenty of seating inside and opening for breakfast, lunch and dinner 7 days a week from 9.30am to 9pm.

Their menu is basic but alot of the food on the menu is traditional Taiwanese typical food you would get for breakfast or simple meal.

🔆SERVICE🔆

The staff always wear pink uniform with brown apron and brown headpiece. They have been the same for many years.  They are friendly and welcoming. You kind of get the feeling that its very home-style something that you dont see much nowadays.

🔆MENU/PRICE🔆

Please note that Grand Taipei Bakery is a Cash Only premises.

🔆VERDICT🔆

My typical favourite if I go here for an early lunch would be Chinese omlette and donut with sweet soy milk. I love it. They make their own soy milk and its delicious.

Otherwise I would always order Fried Pork Cutlet with Rice. YuM! My all time favourite even when during my University days.
Their pickled cucumber and carrot are soo yummy, along with pickled cabbage, fried egg (runny), fried anchovies (Chinese style) makes the whole dish ever so delicious. The Fried Pork Cutlet still tastes exactly the same even 2 decades later, however of course price has increased and the pork quantity is still very generous, it is much less meat but still tastes great. When I am at Grand Taipei I love buying some bread rolls. My all time favourite back in the days were Pork Floss Bun or Spring Onion Roll with pork floss.

However over the years I have opt for Pork Floss Bread (refer to photo).  The bread roll has a very light crunchy pastry top, the bread itself is soft and fluffy inside (not dense at all) with the middle containing some pork floss. It is a nice alternative to the other Pork Floss Bun as it only has small portion of pork floss which is not overly too much but just enough to enjoy!!  Hence why today I was being quite naughty and ordered the Fried Pork Cutlet Rice and also Pork Floss Bread. Was feeling quite nolstagic, brings back memories of when my Uni friends and I would come here to eat and also hang out in the old Box Hill area!

For the price, the food portion & quality is there. Serving time is quite fast too. Ordered beef noodle soup & pork cutlet rice. Noodles was a bit hard but really liked the taste of the beef & the soup; pork cutlet was nicely cooked/fried. Nice & simple asian meal.

Another Box Hill institution! Before the dawn of Breadtop, this was the place that we would come for our Asian breads and cakes. They continue to be fairly consistent in making high quality products, in particular their Swiss rolls...ooo la la! The coffee Swiss roll is my all time favourite. The strong taste of coffee goes well with the sweet cream.

They even have hot dishes if you feel like sitting down for a reasonable meal. You get a pretty grand experience at Grand Taipei!

This small store in Box Hill Central holds a sign in my heart, I grew up around the beef noodle soup, served hot from the kitchen to table, with the old setting around the place, it's really nice. I seriously recommend you go here, also, the green onion pancakes are to DIE FOR. The sticky rice rolls are also amazing, I come back a lot, and I suggest you go here if you already haven't.

Grand Taipei Bakery is a small store that serves a range of authentic Chinese breads, pastries and cakes. I grew up loving the mini sausage buns.
It’s a great place with many options. The cakes were not too sweet and soft, with butter cream.
The pastries were pretty nice as well. Don’t buy any products containing red bean or dates if you can’t handle very sweet things.
Some of my favourites were the taro bun, red bun, custard bun and egg bun. My mum loves the pineapple slice and my brother loves the pork burger.

So far the most authentic taiwanese cafe in melbourne! Although they have very simple, old style setting, but their food is a totally different story. I had the sticky rice roll, egg crepe with chinese dounut and the savory soy milk, they came on table hot and smelled good! The chinese donut in the egg crepe was fried to just right, it wont be too cprisy but remained the gooey texture. Sticky rice has enough moisture so it soft and easy to eat! I especially like the chinese pickle in the soy milk, it reminded me of traditional taipei breaky! Would definitely come back :)

Regrettably I did not buy much. Loved their fried dough, " You tiao" ..really the best I have eaten in Melbourne. Crispy on the outside, soft and chewy inside. Soya bean milk is average but the pickle vege and stewed egg buns are really unique and nice. I will come back for sure..but with limited seatings inside..I must come early.

Finally tried the food and enjoyed this hidden gem. We got the fried pork cutlet which came with salted vegetables, fried anchovies, egg, rice, and had an interesting mix of flavours which worked well. The pork mushroom soup was good too, though I found the meatball a bit odd. The pancake roll with doughnut inside was average and would try the one with meat instead next time!

Travelled to Box Hill to try some of the famous asian eats on offer, and this place was high on my partner and I’s “want-to-try list” (especially as he is Taiwanese). We were pleasantly surprised at the variety of baked goods on offer, and when we saw that they also offered food we had to sit down to try some. We ordered the savoury rice (which had pork floss inside) and the beef roll. The savoury rice was flavourful, delicious and warm; as was the beef roll. The “pancake” of the roll was especially good - it had a nice slight crisp to it which made each bite that more delightful. Would love to come again to try more dishes!

Authentic Taiwanese food in a dilapidated bakery/restaurant. I’ve been here several of times when I was young and nothing has changed. The braised pork rice is excellent, the flavours are well rounded, the pickled veggies are homemade, very different from mass produced store brought stuff. The food could’ve been presented better, in a bowl or something. More rice would be nice, as there is quite a lot of fatty meat.

An interesting bakery that serves a variety of Taiwanese food. The delicious beef noodles came with handmade noodles and flavourful soup. Lu rou fan was good but could be better with more thickened gravy and less rice. The fried anchovies made a good match with this dish. The fish ball soup wasn't my favourite but it wasn't bad, just slightly different with the usual fish balls I've tried; each of them was filled with meat mince. We tried a number of pastries and the lotus egg pastry was amongst the best.

Believe it or not, but I've been going to the Grand Taipei Bakery since the mid-90s... and it has not changed a bit! For some reason, mum would always pick out for my brother and I either the fried pork cutlets or Maryland chicken rice dishes. Having revisited over the last few years, those dishes remain as how they were back then: simple arrangements of pickled vegetables, a runny fried egg, fried anchovies (I believe), and your choice of meat, over a bed of rice. Delicious, and all for a very reasonable price.

One other thing I love about Grand Taipei Bakery--you can't deny that it's genuine, when you see that most of the customer base is of Asian background. Though, it was rather hilarious when everyone serving me insisted on speaking Mandarin, when I was clearly ordering in English. Again, it's the real deal here, haha.

First bakery I have visited within the lunch period last weekend and one that has been, apparently, around before I was even born. Deeply rooted within the Box Hill community, this bakery serves a decent range of savoury dishes in addition to their already popular selection of baked goodies. The dining area is suited for small crowds and reminded me of a breakfast "cha chaan teng" experience that I was accustomed to in Hong Kong. A steady stream of customers poured into the bakery, each customer purchasing at least $20 worth of baked goods and some even walked out with at least two loaves of fluffy soft baked bread along with a couple of boxes containing glistening, baked pastries.

We enjoyed the food there, which was more like home cooked meals. Each set meal ($13.5) provides 3 small dishes and homemade sweet soy meal so we can try more different things there. The hot soy milk and sticky rice warmed us up in the cold weather. The dishes were simple and fresh. We will definitely go back there for a quick lunch.

I was lured by the 3.7 rating on zomato.
For Asian restaurant to get that rating I would say it's pretty good.
The owner was very nice suggesting that we order just enough and some delicious food for the kids.
We got Lu rou fan, beef noodle, egg roll omelette, fried donuts and durian sponge (not in pic).
It was yummm.... my highlight would be the lu rou fan. Not too greasy and just right.
Very very fast and timely service.
Definitely worth visiting. And for $30 for a family, we will come back.

The front of the cafe is actually a bakery that I am very familiar with; where we got a lot of our birthday cakes (durian birthday cake mm!) and asian buns from when I was a kid. Located at the back and along the side are tables for the cafe which I had never been to until Mr Hubby took me there (where young Mr Hubby would go with his family back in the day).

Expect no frills with the interior; decor is dated and old (borderline a little dirty) however if you come here, you come here for the food which is also served in very unappealing plastic plates and bowls. The food is served quickly, it's cheap and very tasty given the price. For this price range, Grand Taipei Bakery no doubt stands out and I can turn a blind eye to the interior and serving plates.

Dishes that make up this review (I recommend both!):

Fried pork cutlet with rice, pickles, fried egg and fish ($10.50)

Despite its really cramped tables up near the back. The quality of the food is really homey, has a warm tasty home made feel to it.

The menu is nothing but staple nostalgia for the Taiwanese: Lu Rou Fan, beef noodles, oyster pancake, xiao long bao, shredded pork and mushroom soup, spring onion pancake… Only thing missing, is the stinky tofu.

Taiwanese food is undoubtedly influenced by the elegance of Japanese and the ‘I don’t care’ of Chinese: Nah, take this piece of fried chicken, with our side of Kyoto-style pickles for $12.

Most authentic Taiwanese food I've managed to find in Melbourne. I was craving sticky rice balls (Fan tuen) so badly after coming back from Taiwan. Although not exactly the same, I found the ones here to be the most similar to the ones I had over there. It was freshly made to order and had a generous amount of filling. Keen to come back for a full meal.

I grew up on buns here. Mum use to buy me the buns here to take to school and occasionally a cake too.

It has been years since I went to eat there, but recently I took the boy, and showed him what my favourite meal was after school.

The porkchop rice was still the same after some many years. Taiwanese style flavoured batter porkchop on rice with side dishes on the side and I still found it comforting. The boy loved it and we also got a hot soy milk and pork ball soup to share

Of coz I went home with some buns too.

Best Taiwanese cuisine in Box Hill. Coming from a Taiwanese background, I find Grand Taipei Bakery to be the most authentic, and underrated Taiwanese food in Box Hill. There are plenty of bigger, more popular places in box hill for Taiwanese food, but this small restaurant, although with limited menu options, perfects each and every dish. Not to mention the prices are very low! Cheap, authentic food, with friendly staff, will be coming back here a lot!

I love how authentic Grand Taipei Bakery is! It’s only a small shop but the food is delicious and the prices are very reasonable. With competition around the corner such as  Food Republik , they manage very well! Even though their menu is definitely limited, I would still prefer to come here for Taiwanese food because it’s bigger portions and the flavours taste closer to the Taiwanese cusine.  Beef Noodle Soup // $8 Really generous serving (I shared this dish!), they filled the soup to the top of the bowl! I love the flavour of the soup and the pickled cabbage. Wow, they gave us SO much pickled cabbage – it can’t be good for you – BUT it tastes so yummy!! The noodles were nice and soft as well. The soup is more salty than it is sweet which suits beef stock. Taiwanese Egg Roll This is a ‘small eat’, similar to the simple street foods you can get in TW. Been craving Taiwan baked goods lately and finally got around to trying this quaint bakery/Taiwanese cafe which has stood the test of time. Golly, it sure delivered! 🍞 We got the pineapple bun/菠萝包 which tasted just as good as ones I had in Taiwan after warming it gently with an air fryer. Their taro bread and roll cake were also incredible, you can taste real taro bits in the cream, I'm already ready for more! 😋 🍍 We tried their small individual pineapple pastry/凤梨酥 which was super delicious. The larger round pineapple pastry pictured is different to the small ones, the filling tasted more jam-like? We'll stick to the traditional small ones next time. 🍰 All round a wonderful selection of breads, pastries and cakes with reasonable prices averaging $3 or less per piece, I can't wait to return and try out the rest!
