The staff were very friendly. Food wise, we weren't given alot of choices just 1 set menu for a weekend dinner. We felt like it was quite overpriced for what we got, but the vibe was very nice. As well as the interior design.
The atmosphere is nice with a modern interior. I had the sushi platter. The A5 Hida Wagyu was amazing; it was buttery and just melted in my mouth. The toro tuna nigiri also melted in my mouth and was fatty. I got 4 cocktails, where my favourite was called ‘the ex’, served in a cute glass with dried berry crumbled on top.
The service was great. A great location near bus and tram stop. Staff was friendly and took care of us well. Great value for food. Every food item had luxury added into it. Wagyu was one of the best I’ve had and very flavourful. Need to touch anything, staff cooked everything in front of my eyes!!
In Box Hill where the dining scene is mainly made up of inexpensive, family friendly places, Katori is a bit of a special venue where couples can go for a romantic night out, or for a few close friends to celebrate a special occasion.
Its normal dinner menu can be expensive, with the price tag set at around $140 per head. I have heard many good things about this place, and also discovered that they have a much more affordable lunch menu. For as cheap as $15 you can enjoy their gyu don, with premium cuts of beef that are way more superior than what you get at the fast food joints at a similar price.
I ordered the gyutan don, which is the ox tongue rice bowl, for only $18. Excellent portion size and value for money. The ox tongue was delicious and succulent and the rice was full of flavour, soaking up the juice from the meat. Service was friendly and attentive, and it was not busy when I went. Their lunch service is from 11am to 2:30pm everyday (I think so, not sure about weekends, so it’s advisable to call beforehand to make sure) so I strongly recommend going for a lovely meal while enjoying the peace and quiet.
😱Lizzie’s first impression: hands down one of the best and most refined Japanese barbeque place I've been to - the ambience appears high end but not snobbish; the food is of premium quality and the staff are very attentive.
🍩Lizzie enjoyed: I tried the 9 Course Dugustation Menu and it was impeccable.
First up was some edamame with truffle oil and sea salt - very interesting as I've never had Edamame peas with truffle oil before. It was subtle but definitely made a difference.
Katori Signature Sashimi - tried their most popular sashimi and it was super fresh and looked aesthetically pleasing
Signature Wagyu Sushi with Black Caviar - this was definitely a highlight for me - it was soo yummy and was seared well. The flavours were amazing and I'd come back just for this.
Wagyu Mince Ball with black sesame sauce - think a black balls with goodness inside - The Wagyu Mince almost tasted like tuna for me but nonetheless, matchde well with the sesame sauce
Next up was the Yakiniku MS9+ Wagyu Platter - It was handsdown INCREDIBLE and would recommend this. It was super tasty and was so soft and almost melted on my tongue.
Hot Stone Foie Gras with Truffle Rice - it was my first time trying something like this and I was pleasantly surprised. The Truffle Rice was so fragrant and tasted amazing. This went well with the homemade Miso soup. I was so impressed.
Lastly, we finished off with the water flower cake for dessert. What a way to finish off my night - it was a so cleverly made and I loved the icecream that it was paired with.
🍅Lizzie did not enjoy: it's situated in Box Hill which is home to many great restaurants - but definitely worth travelling to as everything was really tasty.
🥇Lizzie rates overall: an incredible place that I would recommend to anyone - will definitely come back for the other items on their menu!
This place is by far the my favourite restaurant in the eastern Melbourne. Came here last year, the service was disappointing however came again to try after they change menu couple days ago. My god!!!! The service is spot on very personalized and they actually remember your name!
The four of us ordered tokujo?platter (which is their above 9+ platter). The marble and texture of their meat just makes the whole dish so worth the money. Having been to Wagyu ya and oniku so many times, I think this place has so much more value to money...not to mention they are even slightly cheaper...with this kind of ambience, the service and the food.
Already planning my visit next week yikes!
Great quality wagyu and nice service here. Definitely will come for a second visit with friends!
@katorijapanese best A5 hida beef in Melbourne. Just some small recommendations to Katori. Why don’t cook for customers for such good beef? You need to teach customers how to appreciate different parts of the beef with different timing. More small name tag with each part will be also nice suggesting. I like Katori better than Niku Ou but Niku Ou provides better service and dining experience. Hope Katori can improve and give a thumbs up and look forward to Omi beef
Great customer service, no issues. It was a little hard to hear some of them speaking, but still ok. Nice interiors, intimate. Had the charcoal bbq, with the wagyu platter and the premium wagyu platter, both beef was tender and very nice! Dipping sauce was tasty. The dragon beard on the dessert was melt in your mouth delicious. I would recommend the Toro tataki too.

Amazing decor and atmosphere . Was greeted at the door.
We ordered the sashimi which was sensational 🍣🍣🍣🍣🍣. The wagyu 9+ was ok 🥩🥩🥩🥩.
Miso cod fish was ok as well 🐟🐟🐟
The bbq was average and 🍢🍢🍢.
Service was really under the par . No plates, soy sauce etc .
Excellent service upon arrival! We were astonished by the classy modern interior and how polite and helpful the staffs were. We ordered the sashimi (12pcs), wagyu tataki, deep fried wagyu minced ball, wagyu platter, foie gras bimbimbap and winter flower cake for dessert. Every single dish we ordered was delicious and was a 5/5.
Food was heaps better than I had expected, considering they were achieving for a high-end restaurant look for a relatively new restaurant. Their starters were the stand out for me as the dishes were tasty and looked visually pleasant. The let down was that the staff lacked attentiveness and our table found it hard to grab a staff’s attention whenever we needed to. And some of the beef cuts weren’t the best considering the price tag and the hype of the wagyu grading.
Other than that, not a bad experience at all at Katori. They’re definitely on to something!
Invited for dinner at Katori the restaurant is classy and sophisticated with dim intimate lighting. We started with the sashimi and wagyu mince balls. The sashimi was fresh and had good variety including uni (sea urchin). The signature wagyu nigiri screamed luxury being garished with black caviar and gold leaf. The wagyu melted in your mouth and left you wanting more! After such amazing starters, it was time for the main event. Three different cuts of MS9+ wagyu platter to be cooked right over hot coals. The wagyu was buttery and took on the amazing flavours from the charcoal. Just when I didn't think the night could get any better, out came the hot stone with foie gras and truffle rice. The smell of truffle filled the room instantly and worked perfect with the foie gras. This was a simple yet out of this world dish, highly recommend trying this!!!
Overall I was blown away by the quality of food and how well thought out everything was, from the presentation to the preparation of the yakiniku. HIGHLY RECOMMEND.
Katori is a sleek and sexy addition to the Box Hill dining scene, situated underneath the new Chen hotel. We were treated to the 9 course degustation which is $118 pp for the food or $166 with matched wines.
Our meal started with the Katori Signature Sashimi, Signature Wagyu Sushi with Black Caviar and Wagyu Mince Balls with Black Sesame Sauce. The sashimi is all super plump, fresh and delicious and includes scallops and uni. My favourite were the Wagyu balls which are crispy, cheesy and addictively delicious.
For mains we had the Yakiniki MS9+ Wagyu Platter which includes the chefs selection of 3 cuts (ours had oyster blade, sirloin and short rib), a refreshing Komi Nori Green Salad, Homemade Miso Soup and Hot Stone Foie Gras with Truffle Rice. The meat is top notch quality and buttery, melt in your mouth tender. My favourite was the oyster blade but all cuts are fantastic. The foie gras rice was ridiculously good too and probably won my favourite dish of the night!
For dessert there is a beautiful Water Flower Cake with green tea and vanilla icecream and sesame flavouring. Light and refreshing and a perfect way to finish the meal.
Overall Katori lives up to its luxe interior with a beautifully sophisticated version of Japanese BBQ that is both fun and intimate. Perfect for groups, date nights or any special occasion. Highly recommend!

📝: In love with this luxurious Japanese restaurant and bar located in Boxhill. Serving up highest quality Japanese food and finest wagyu beef fused with premium quality Australian produce in a classic style yakiniku.
❤️: We had the 9 Course Degustation Menu. Starting of with Signature Sashimi, Wagyu Sushi with Caviar, and Wagyu Minced Ball with Black Sesame.
Then onto the highlight of the night—Yakiniku MS9+ Wagyu Platter of chefms selected premium cuts. Also loved the Hot Stoned Foie Gras with Truffle Rice. Amazing.

This restaurant sits right at the bottom of the Chen Hotel and they serve Japanese BBQ and dishes in a fine-dining setting. The meat cuts are of high quality with many options being 9+. Beef tartare and the foie Gras are highly recommended. Service can be improved a little though, the people didn't try to help us carry our pram up the stairs.
We came to Katori for dinner on a Saturday night. The restaurant is beautiful and classy. We decided to order a la carte dishes as well as use the bbq grill. The waiters and waitresses provided excellent service and brought us everything we asked for promptly and with a smile. They also constantly cleared our plates to make sure we had enough room on the table for food.
We ordered a number of dishes: the vegetable bimbimbap, the sashimi, the sushi platte, the black cod miso yaki, the fried potatoes, the tuna on lotus root chips and marinated vegetables. The sashimi and sushi was the hilight of my meal. The fish was very fresh and of good quality which made the sashimi and sushi a pleasure to eat. The black cod was exquisite - melted in the mouth and grilled to perfection with the miso which added a nutty buttery flavour. The tuna on lotus root chips had amazing flavour and freshness.
We also ordered the seafood platter, the vegetable platter and chicken for the bbq grill. The charcoal bbq was smokeless and we didn’t smell after. The meat and veggies were fresh and of high quality and beautifully presented.
I would love to come back to try more food as well as their beef bbq. This is a lovely restaurant to enjoy delicious food and drink at a nice relaxed pace.
The Wagyu Marble 9+ oyster blade is sooooo tender and the sashimi is just delicious! The sea urchin even tastes a bit sweet which just makes everything so perfect! It’s right next to the Boxhill central so need to worry about the car park and the waitress are very friendly. Definitely recommended!
Omgosh this place is incredible! The head cheg nailed every dish on the head and I wished we could have ate more. I'm definitely coming back for more.
Make sure you book! It's absolutely worth trying! I also highly recommend the cocktails, they are all very well designed and taste amazing.
Katori is a premium Japanese restaurant and located in the luxury hotel The Chen in Box Hill. They have notable chefs, formerly of Nobu and Saké, so you can't go wrong with the food here!
The interior is nicely decorated, with a dim setting and a VIP room for a group setting/special occasions. I was fortunate enough to experience the 9 course degustation menu in the private room function. It's $118 per person with great quality food so I would love to go again with my family next time on a special occasion!
9 Course Degustation Menu includes:
EDAMAME WITH TRUFFLE OIL AND SEA SALT - Really nice truffle oil scent on the edamame. It's addictive!
KATORI SIGNATURE SASHIMI - OMG they were such fresh sashimi pieces such as scallops, scampi, tuna, salmon etc
SIGNATURE WAGYU SUSHI WITH BLACK CAVIAR - This was really nice and wasn't chewy at all with the wagyu.
WAGYU MINCE BALL WITH BLACK SESAME SAUCE - Very crunchy wagyu mince balls with cheese in the middle. Interesting and creative!
YAKINUKA MS9+ WAGYU PLATTER (3 KINDS, CHEF'S SELECTION) - The waiters booked these for us and they were just perfect! Tender and juicy!
KOMI NORI GREEN SALAD - Refreshing salad and palate cleanser in between all the meat!
HOT STONE FOIE GRAS WITH TRUFFLE RICE - This was really nice and the waiters break up the foie gras on the spot for you. Served still hot and really nice.
HOMEMADE MISO SOUP - Standard miso soup served warm.
DESSERT - WATER DROP CAKE WITH VANILLA BEAN AND MATCHA ICE CREAM - Really nice dessert. The water drop cake was like a clear jelly, not as chewy and really nice when served with ice cream and other toppings on the plate.
Overall, I really enjoyed this place. The food was top notch and milk tea mocktail was very creative! Loved everything about this place. Thank you Katori for an awesome dinner. Would come again!
It's hard not to be impressed by Katori. Upon entering, you'll be seduced by the moody and romantic ambiance, and marvel at the sleekness of the venue. Traditional Japanese cooking is given a modern twist here, yet the essence of Japanese cuisine is not forgotten. Only the freshest and finest quality ingredients are used here, and there's no doubt about this once you savour your meal here.
I was treated to a 9 course degustation menu, comprising amongst others, wagyu sushi with black caviar, and hot stone foie grass with truffle rice. These two dishes were the standouts of the night. The wagyu was incredibly tender, and exudes a rich savouriness that felt like a blessing to my taste buds. The foie grass added a creamy buttery flavour to the fragrant truffle rice - a most heavenly combination.
The other dishes that I tried were just as phenomenal. The wagyu mince ball with black sesame sauce - with its crunchy texture and gooey cheesy inside, and paired with the nuttiness of the sauce - was the sort of balls that you would make you yell out "grab life by the balls!".
The chef came over to cook the main course for us - Yakiniku MS9+ Platter. With three different cuts of meat, each as amazing as the other, we were in heaven. The intense fat marbling resulted in buttery soft meats that literally melted in my mouth.
With the meats done and dusted in no time, the final masterpiece arrived at the table. The delicate water flower cake was a pretty sight, and also a textural and flavour delight. Jelly-like and delicate was the cake, combine with the slight bitterness of the matcha ice cream, the caramelised sweetness of the black syrup and the distinct roasted nutty taste of the kinako powder, this resulted in a dessert to remember.
From when I had my first bite to my last bite, I was already thinking about coming back. Katori is indeed that unforgettable. Thank you for having me.
I’d been reluctant to try katori due to the mixed reviews and it’s on the other side of town for us but decided to give it a go. The venue is beautifully dark and modern however the tables are adequately lit. The menu by ex-Nobu chef has a good variety of dishes from fresh sushi and sashimi, hot pot, barbecue, small dishes and rice and noodles. However, katori’s specialty is their selection of high quality beef from wagyu MS 7+ and 9+ to Hida A5. I was excited to try the foie gras rice as I love the one from niku ou. I opted for the sushi platte, wagyu tataki, MS 9+ oyster blade and karubi cuts, ox tongue and foie gras rice. Service was prompt and food came out in a timely manner. The sushi was well presented, super fresh and great variety. The tataki was interesting. It was nice to see a different take on tataki compared to the overly repeated ponzu and garlic chip variations. This tataki was served with nori, crisps and a sweet dressing. The wagyu beef was tender and fresh. The meat was also great quality, highly marbled and tender. The ox tongue was cut a little too thick and was abit chewy. I think the staff need a bit of training on how to cook the different cuts as we had a staff member come assist in the cooking and was undercooking the beef. I believe karubi cuts with a higher fat content require a little more cooking so the fat melts otherwise it’s chewy. The foie gras rice was nice but was lacking flavour. Overall a good meal, and would return to try some other dishes. Highly recommend the sushi and sashimi.
We enjoyed our meal very much at Katori. The place was very nice and not noisy, we we really liked. The staff were friendly and helpful.
We had a selection of delicious dishes and enjoyed every single bite! One word: sensational! These were some of the dishes we tried...
- Sashimi 12pcs (tuna, kingfish, salmon, whitefish, Hokkaido scallop, sweet shrimp)
Very fresh and delicious, we loved how they use great quality ingredients!
- Wagyu aburi sushi
So beautifully presented and sooo delicious! I really think the meat quality is absolutely amazing here!
-Wagyu mince balls
Now this is something I could definitely snack on every single day, yum! Every bite was just delightful!
- Foie Gras and Truffle Rice Howl (Don)
Best. Truly the best. Loved this! Do you love foie gras? How about truffle? Order this if you do!
- BBQ Meat (Blackmore Sirloin, Oyster Blade 9+, Karubi 9+)
These melt in your mouth, I just can’t describe how amazing the quality of the meat here is! You will definitely be satisfied!
- Water flower cake - with black syrup, shredded halva, kinako and vanilla ice cream
Really loved how light and refreshing this was. Definitely perfect to end a feast full of delicious marbly meat!
.
We also had 2 very wonderful drinks:
- ‘Strawberry Fields’ with strawberry, rose water, lemon juice, soda. I must say I loved this drink, it was sweet and refreshing - definitely ordering it again! You can have this as a mocktail or add vodka/house gin!
- ‘Nikka Manhattan’ with Japanese pure malt whisky, antica formula, whiskey bitter & maraschino. This one was absolutely amazing too, loved the flavours. It is quite strong, so definitely keep that in mind when you’re ordering!
I was so lucky to try the new Katori Signature Tasting Menu first-hand at a media event, and wow I was blown away!
Upon entering, my eyes opened up to the stunning venue. Dark, romantic, and also modern. We were seated in the private dining room which was a very nice and intimate space.
We started off with some Edamame with Truffle Salt, and boy were these addictive! I love edamame and I love truffle - so this was the perfect combination! The scent of truffle is just incredible and really enhances the dish!
The Chef’s Selection Sashimi (12 cuts) was so fresh and delicious. Each piece of sashimi was of high quality, and there was so much variety too.
The Deep-Fried Wagyu Meatball was phenomenal - this is a must have! The meat was so juicy and soft, and wrapped in a lovely crunchy coating. It came with a black sesame creamy sauce which went so well with the meatball.
The Wagyu Aburi Sushi tasted as incredible as it looked. The wagyu literally melts in your mouth (I’m going to be saying this a lot) and the taste is just incredible. Also in one set, you get two per person (very generous as most places I’ve tried just do one!).
Next came the BBQ - Yakiniku Platter 180g MB9+. Wow, that meat was just amazing. We watched the chef cook it in front of us and the hardest part was to not reach out and grab a piece already. The wagyu melts - I mean MEALTS - in your mouth. The marbling is incredible and the fat just coats all around your mouth. Very decadent and delicious!
The Foie Grais with Truffle Rice was really impressive! Probably the best truffle rice I’ve had - it was so flavourful without being overly oily or heavy. The foie grais added a nice creaminess and flavour to the rice. I could honestly eat two portions for myself!
The Komi Nori Green Salad was very refreshing and the perfect accompaniment to all the wagyu. I loved the nori seaweed which added a nice umami flavour and saltiness to the dish.
Finally, we finished with the Watercake. It was actually my first time trying watercake and I really loved it! It was very light like jelly, and not too sweet. I loved the combination with the matcha ice cream.
The cocktails are also a must - not only are they beautiful but they also taste amazing too.
Overall, I had an incredible experience at Katori. I would highly recommend their Signature Tasting Menu - and it’s the perfect amount of food so you won’t feel hungry nor too full.
Thank you so much for having me!

This restaurant exceeded my expectations. Everything was so good from the food to the customer service. Highly recommend you to visit this place.
Newly opened. Wagyu quality is very good. Nice staff and environment. Definitely a place to go!! Im happy that there is finally a decent Japanese restuarant nearby that I can come often.
Tucked away on the ground floor of boutique Art Series Hotel, The Chen in Box Hill is where you will find Katori. A high-end Japanese restaurant ready to blow diners away with an elegant menu of Japanese finesse and a fiery charcoal grill at the centre of each table. Interior design studio Melissa Collison is responsible for the sexy fit out; slick black-on-black textures provide the perfect backdrop for a smokey evening with warm glowing lighting that reveals some finer details of the space. Black leather booths anchored together by some mesmerising amber pendant lights by Tom Dixon seem to be the cosiest of tables in the restaurant but if you’re after some more privacy, the private dining room is where you should be booking.
Sometimes you just hit the jackpot. And that's what happened to me when I was invited to visit Katori Japanese in Box Hill.
This restaurant is an easy few minutes flat walk from the train station or directly across the road from a tram stop making it really accessible.
I was fortunate enough to try the Katori Signature Tasting Menu.
The whole menu was very special so I will highlight some special dishes.
The chefs selection of sushimi 12 cuts was amazing. Fresh fish, perfectly prepared and mouthwatering. Yessss hahaha
Then it was Wagyu Aburi Sushi w Caviar which was superb. The Wagyu melted in my mouth and the caviar was incredible.
The Yakiniku platter was another favourite of mine.
One of my favourites was a deep fried Wagyu meatball as it was slightly crunchy on the outside and soft and full of and incredible meaty flavour inside. This was the BEST! Lol
For those people who know their Wagyu I ate the Yakiniku Platter 180g MB9+ which was cooked on a BBQ perfectly and the meat just melted in my mouth. This is meat at another level. It was sooo juicy, soft and ... divine hahaha
The foie gras w truffle rice was some of the best rice I've ever eaten! Full stop. I really like rice but this combination was fantastic. It tasted incredible.
The watercake, matcha ice cream and cotton candy was such a fun way to finish this meal.
The watercake not surprisingly was transparent but really good. And the matcha ice cream creamy and so enjoyable. I did try some of the cotton candy which was sweet fun.
Oh and I almost forgot to mention the amazing cocktails. They looked as good as they looked. I tried a strawberry cocktail and it was sweet, fruity and very special.
What a fun night I had. Such incredible food, wonderful company and an experience to remember. This place is a must visit.
Must try the foie gras rice.. so good. Overall good atmosphere, good food and attentive service. Recommend to anyone looking for a decent upscale Japanese dining experience in the east side. Definitely going back for the foie gras. :)
We had visited Katori a couple of months back during their launch night and it was such a perfect experience!
The starters, mains and desserts were on point! The highlight of the evening were the juicy meats that were barbecued on our table and the wagyu beef balls with truffle sauce! Desserts such as the panna cotta and raindrop cakes were a good finish to the evening!
We would definitely visit Katori again for another yummy experience!
It provides an optimal and warm atmosphere for afternoon meal. In general, serves are generous, food are tasty, great service, we enjoyed every bits of it.
The only let down is the unagi puff, the pastry was dry and soaky, otherwise all good! Very satisfied.
Katori is my favorite restaurant in Box Hill. Have been here many times, really friendly staff, fresh food and comfortable environment. The bar is also awesome!! If u like Japanese food, Katori will definitely be a good choice in Melbourne. High recommend!!!
Fantastic cocktails and tasty dishes served by friendly (but a little too attentive) staff in a lovely setting. The standouts for us were the kingfish sashimi, minced toro, Wagyu tataki and tetsubin mushi. Definitely coming back to try the rest!
5 stars isn’t enough to describe how amazing this food was. We ordered a few plates to share and they accommodated everything for gluten free, exchanging sauces and marinades for us. The quality of fish and meat was extraordinary and the service was above and beyond.
I'm very gald there is a Japanese fusion yakiniku restaurant open down on the east side, the wagyu is DOPE, you got an option of 7+ or 9+ wagyu, they even got 5A wagyu from Japan, we had the 9+ wagyu short rips, tofu and wagyu tataki, Toro tataki, everything is spot on, the service is brilliants. Will definitely come back again. Loved it ❤️❤️❤️
The interior and service was great. The staff were friendly and the restaurant had a fusion of modern and traditional decor. Food was delicious and very insta worthy! My favorite was the sashimi tasting platter. Definitely would come back to try the rest of the menu
I was greeted upon entry by the friendly restaurant manager Evan who immediately brought me to my table.
I had the Pink Alaska cocktail and it was super delicious. To start off the night, I had the wagyu sushi with foie gras and caviar. You can definitely taste the burst of flavour in your mouth with these ingredients.
Next was the tasting platter. There were uni, tuna tartare, sashimi, beef and shellfish. I thoroughly enjoyed the tasting platter as you get to enjoy many different types of food.
I especially liked the snapper that came afterward. It was a hot dish and the sauce that bathed the fish was absolutely delicious. After that, we had the wagyu beef 9+ for grilling and dipping sauces. Recommended grilling time would be 3-4 seconds each side for these beef. They were soooo scrumptious as they melted in my mouth. I loved it with the yuzu sauce
As I thought it couldn’t get better, I also had dessert to complement the night. The panna cotta had the perfect jiggle and it was coffee flavoured. For someone who doesn’t drink coffee like me, I actually liked the panna cotta a lot. The flavour was good and it wasn’t too sweet.
I also had the bird’s nest pudding and it was refreshing. Bit of bird’s nest were sitting on top of the pudding and it was divine.
Overall, I couldn’t fault their service as Evan and his team were super attentive to me and kept checking to make sure that I was enjoying my meal. Do check them out to experience Japanese fine dining at its best.
The menu is very similar to wagyu ya and Niku ou Good quality of wagyu beef, we ordered Chuck roll 7+ and 9+ also Oyster blade 7+ and 9+, there is no much difference between 7+ and 9+ of Oyster blade, but the 9+chuck roll was just melted in the mouth, definitely better than 7+
The food and dishes we selected were amazing, staff was very helpful with helping us select off the menu. My favourite was the Foie gras and rice, I would go back just for that. Really likes the decor, very comforting feeling.
I visited Katori when it first opened. I have no negative comments to mention about the food or the service. I feel that the food was up to the mark and the service that was provided was also really good. I would recommend this to any wagyu beef lovers as the price is lower than other premium wagyu restaurants such as Wagyu Ya and the quality of the food is just as good.
Having heard lots of great reviews about Katori I finally went and tried. We ordered wagyu from different parts and of different qualities, and of course they were different experiences. There were a couple of varieties that were a bit chewy or too oily but overall the wagyu was tender and tasty. The oysters were smaller than expected but tasted great. The seafood platter was fresh as well. My cocktail was nice but the block of ice gradually melted and diluted my drink throughout the night.
The service was really good pretty much the whole night. They explained the wagyu, how to cook on the bbq, held plates in the light for us to take photos before setting them down, kept an eye on our cooking at the start and switched to Chinese when they realised that was our preferred language, on top of providing friendly and efficient service. It was only after we were done that we struggled to find our waitress to ask for the bill and that was just because she was really busy serving other tables she was responsible for.
The restaurant is quite dim but there is decent lighting towards the centre of the table as you need to see when you’re cooking. The table can also become quite cramped if you order a lot of dishes.
Best Japanese chargrill restaurant I’ve ever been to in Melbourne. Fresh sushi, amazing wagyu beef and cocktails. Love the high end decor and warm lighting here. Definitely worth the price. Strongly recommended.
We have four serves of the wagyu 7+ beef for dinner along with vegetable bibimbap and sashimi entree. The food was really good! Though I have to say that I am a bit confused of the background music that they were playing. Katori does present itself as a high-end Japanese BBQ dining experience, black decor and unique tableware and in the background plays; Beyoncé and candy pop music. I’m confused and it certainly did not help with the level of chatter/ noise because the music was quite loud. Perhaps ... have a change of music? It is a Japanese restaurant. Japanese indie music perhaps?
Japanese fine dining located in box hill, Whitehorse Tower. The interior design is classy and suitable for different occasions. There are good variety of choices. Best of mine is Yakiniku and foie gras. And my little girl really enjoys the wagyu meat balls. The raw dishes would be okay to try though, fresh and melt in mouth, but not quite a surprise. For Yakiniku, we were recommended to give 7+ a go first since this is the first time, but changed mine later however cannot change to 9+ which is a little impefect this time. Overall recommended and will definitely go the second time.
Located right next to the CHEN building, Katori is a new place for Japanese food lover. We were impressed by their food and dish presentation. Ordered a Choya Martini which was off menu. Wagyu meat ball with black ink squid dip was a must try. Very fresh sashimi and cold dishes. The foie gras rice bowl was absolutely yummy. Personally I enjoyed their a la carte menu over the Wagyu BBQ. But overall a great destination for something fancy.
Can't go wrong to a quality wagyu. When a well know chef makes it to the suburbs it one you have to try for yourself to believe. Well priced for a quality feed
I been to this restaurant for 3 times in a month already , very modern fitout with fresh sashimi sushi and foie gras bowl was really nice as well. Perfect choice for dating, occasions or even casual dining. Highly recommend.
Katori is one of the best Japanese restaurants I have tried in Melbourne. Particularly in Box Hill where there are lots of Chinese restaurants, it is really hard to find a fine dining and authentic Japanese restaurant like this. We visited the place twice since it opened early this year. The food was always very fresh, and delicious. They even provide some chief’s specials (sashimi in particular) which are not shown in the menu and vary from time to time. I really like their BBQ/grille. The wagyu beef is really tasty. Surprisingly, there wasn’t smoky at all, which made me feel quite comfy. I think the Japanese grille is the must-try. The desserts are nice and delicious as well. Love the bird nest one (couldn’t remember the full name). The internal docor is modern and comfortable. Nice and friendly staff. Overall, I think Katori is a must-try Japanese restaurant.
This is one of the best Japanese restaurants and fine dining restaurants you can find in the Eastern Suburb. When you walk in the space, you can feel the premium and authentic Japanese style interior design. The dining area is spacious. There is also private function room suites your need. There are multiple food choices, incl. different Sushi, Sashimi, Beef BBQ and dessert. The service is also great. The waiter introduced thoroughly about the menu, food options and help you cook the beef. You can feel the quality of food and great cooking skills. There is also a bar which you can drink with your friends. We very enjoy the dining experience and taste of origin Japenese foods. Highly recommended!
Beautiful fine dining experience at Katori, located on the ground floor The Chen Hotel. Particularly loved all the raw dishes, yakiniku and the foie gras was simply divine! My favourite cocktails was the pina Osaka which was paired with dessert. Highly recommend especially for date night.
Katori is the best place to visit if you're looking for casual fine dinning in Box Hill.
They've got a variety range of dishes to choose from. Some of the dishes are creative which are not as likely to see in many other Japanese restaurants.
Try Foie Gras Stone Bowl!!! It was sooooo good.
Most importantly, pricing is reasonable for such an incredible experience. Highly recommend any Japanese food lover to explore Katori.
I highly recommend this place! Excellent food and cocktail, friendly staff and atmosphere. The wagu beef we ordered for bbq was absolutely amazing. Fantastic dining experience.
Wonderful Japanese restaurant with lovely food!!! Love the sushi, wagyu beef, sashimi and dessert! The best Japanese restaurant I've ever been to in Melbourne. Definitely worth a try.
Katori is the newest Japanese yakiniku spot to hit Box Hill.
They’ve got an amazing range of high quality wagyu to grill, fresh sashimi and many other amazing dishes like their wagyu meatballs which had the crispiest exterior! The wagyu sashimi is a must as well.
It’s a great spot to go for dinner with your family or even for a date!
Japanese yakiniku BBQ meets casual fine dining, with chefs Kengo Hiromatsu (former head chef Nobu and Sake) and Yasuo Matsuike (former chef Nobu) onboard to design the menu.
The chefs take advantage of quality Australian produce and Japanese technique to create modern dishes for the a la carte menu.
Various cuts of wagyu beef with a high marbling score of 9+ are offered for the yakiniku BBQ.
With credentials like this, they have set the expectations high.
I experienced a range of dishes while at a media event, so I’ll report on dishes that are likely to be on the menu, or were outstanding.
• Yakiniku – excellent use of the charcoal bbq, be attentive and do not overcook your meat. Oyster blade, Chuck roll and Wagyu sirloin were on offer and for me, the chuck roll was the most flavoursome and tender. That is not to say the others were not delicious, as they were still juicy with natural fat marbled through.
• Prawn Ponzu – prawns were expertly cooked, as they had a flavour from the grill but not overcooked. Ponzu sauce was tangy.
• Whitefish – served almost ceviche style, the fish was firm and had good flavour.
• Wagyu tataki – in a style similar to a carpaccio, extra kick of umami was introduced with parmesan and truffle. Love the quail egg yolk.
• Umami snapper – a few scales were still found on the fish skin. Not good enough for a premium restaurant with chefs of this standard. Other than that, it was delicately cooked with a light broth.
• Fois Gras Hot Stone – this might have been my favourite dish. It’s a simple bowl of rice, but the fois gras on top was smoky and creamy, a little bit goes a long way. Absolutely delicious.
The restaurant’s interior design is a work of Melisa Collison, who is celebrated for her eye in creating luxury and contemporary ambiances.
Katori is no exception – while it is spacious with plenty of seating, it still feels very intimate, aided by the dim room and focussed lighting.
The restaurant’s exhaust system is also very efficient and quiet – even with a room full of charcoal BBQs going, the venue wasn’t billowing like a smokehouse.
The service still needs to be a bit more cohesive and consistent, as I was served by 3 different waitresses. It was difficult to get someone’s attention and it took quite a while (15 mins at least) for someone to take our order – and this is at a media event even.
While Katori are aiming quite high (with appropriately matching prices), there are a few little details to iron out before they run the premium tag efficiently.
We had a unique Japanese experience with Katori, this is a newly opened fine dining restaurant in Box Hill.
.
Our favorite dishes:
🥩 9+ grade oyster blade wagyu beef
🍣 Wagyu Nigiri + Wagyu meatballs
🐟 Fresh Sashimi (salmon, kingfish & scallops)
💧 The water cake, with peanuts, ice cream, strawberries and fairyfloss

We had a great time in this bougie Japanese setting, trying new flavours. Staff were super helpful in explaining all the menu items and this spot is the perfect place for a cute date! 🥰
Katori is a fine dining Japanese restaurant in Melbourne located in luxury boutique hotel The Chen in Box Hill. It’s a newly opened classy and authentic Japanese restaurant run by notable chefs, formerly of Nobu and Saké, Kengo Hiromatsu Executive Head Chef and Yasuo Matsuike Head Chef. We’re so honored to be invited in the grand opening night dinner.
Katori is a beautiful, new and modern Japanese restaurant. They have such beautiful and fresh dishes with a range of seafood and meat. All cooked to perfection. They serve beautiful cocktails also! Not to mention, the interior is very modern and classy.
What an incredible experience. Highly recommend!
I was lucky enough to have an incredible night with at Katori! They held an amazing tasting night, and I’m so excited there’s another sophisticated Japanese restaurant this side of Melbourne! Definite highlights were the outstanding foie gras and the high quality beef that was served for the Japanese barbecue - finishing off with the water cake! Beautifully presented, with the phenomenal flavour to back it up!
Japanese cuisine almost never fails to disappoint me and the latest restaurant to become one of my favourite spots in Melbourne is the newly opened, Katori in Box Hill – an upper class and refined establishment featuring the best Japanese wagyu cooked on top of their yakiniku charcoal BBQ grills. From a moody, yet chic interior, to an elaborately designed Japanese fusion menu, with particular emphasis on showcasing its high quality wagyu, Katori is definitely a Melbourne restaurant that I brings to life Japanese ingredients against the backdrop of Western cuisine.
I was fortunate enough to visit this restaurant for its launch and I was blown away!! 💯
For starters the decor and set up is incredible, despite being so busy it felt like there was plenty of space between tables and the room doesn’t echo so we could easily hold conversations at the table!
Now to the customer service and food.
All the food was literally next level, the choice and quality of wagyu is simply phenomenal and the sashimi was bursting with flavour. 🤤 I also sampled the prawn cocktail, whitefish, wagyu meatballs (with the most amazing sesame sauce), the wagyu tataki (such incredible textures and was so flavoursome), the water cake and the strawberry dessert! 🍮 🍓
I could not recommend ALL of this food enough. 🤓😍❤️
They have amazing cocktails and drinks to complement their menu which definitely pack a punch as well. 🍹🍷
I am leaving a very satisfied nerd and will definitely be back to explore more of the menu and try some of my favorites again!! ❤️
Update: have visited again! And it was just as amazing!!!
An amazing place to enjoy fine dining modern Japanese cuisine. The best part about the night was the food, drink and the staff. Ask for Danny! He's a great bartender.
Thanks Katori, I'll be back again.
What a great place to dine. Love the food and the service was first class. Definitely will come back to try out more of the menu and it's recommended beverages list that compliment every flavour. Thanks for having me 😊
One of the best dining experiences in Melbourne. The oyster blade meat is certainly a must try if you visit. Highly recommend the pina osaka or the blue berry crush drink. Overall, the food and decor was done exquisitely.
Absolutely next level. All their dishes so unique and amazing, definitely has a more high end feel especially with its beautiful interior. Staff were very helpful also when picking menu items and cocktails. Will return.
Amazing Japanese food with a high level of professionalism and class. It really provides competition for Nobu and sets a high standard for themselves and Japanese cuisine in Melbourne
I went to Katori with a bunch of friends to celebrate my birthday last Sat and was totally blown away by this new restaurant in Box Hill. Yakiniku was definitely the highlight of the meal and I was extremely impressed by the quality of the meat. Staff was very friendly and upon our request, recommended us a type of sake with a subtle hint of sweetness which complimented the exceptional taste of the yakiniku. I would definitely come back to this place!
