Review Thai Saffron - Brighton

Angie Bee
My third time at Thai Saffron was definitely the charm. I hadn't been in almost 10 years, and I'm sorry I didn't come back sooner. The food was beautiful and everything overall was good. If you're getting a starter, beware that their portions are far smaller than any other Thai restaurant I've been to. The Chicken Curry Puffs only come in twos, where everywhere else comes in fours, but I guess you can then still fit in your main meal. I must say, I couldn't taste the chicken in the puffs, but either way, the flavour was lovely. The fried rice was beautiful, fresh, moist (sorry, I can't think of another adjective to say "not dry") and tasty. Onion lovers will rejoice with the massive chunks found in the dish, but I could have done with a bit more refined chopping (for my taste). Overall, Thai Saffron is a great local gem if you want a nice casual meal out. You can hear yourselves even over other tables, and the service and food were great. Parking CAN be challenging at times, but I wouldn't let that deter you from giving this a go. It's definitely well worth it!

Didn’t have to wait long for delivery. Red duck curry was the best I’ve had outside of Thailand. Can’t wait to eat Thai Saffron again.
Ivan Voronoff
The food is good but the service is terrible. Wait for 40min for to pick up the food got there and wait another 20 min. No apologies! Got home to find the sauce that said it had vegetables but ended up with a onion soup 🤣.

Went here for dinner with a friend and we were both very impressed! The food is delicious and the customer service was excellent. Would definitely come back.

This Thai restaurant has a delicious modern Thai menu and the owners are lovely, lovely staff also.
Greg Kaplan
Staff member advised us to cancel our uber order over the phone and collect the food ourselves as uber was taking so long. Uber advised they will compensate the restaurant for the order. The restaurant then charges us for the dinner and advises that uber doesn't compensate them. I recommend the restaurant stops telling people to cancel their uber orders and double charging their customers.

Terrible service and poor quality of food. I ordered red duck curry there was barely if no duck but all bones and fat. When I approached the waitress she said nothing can be done. Not only are they providing poor customer service but the food is not worth the money. Wouldn’t recommend this place or ever return. Oh and where have you also seen that you get charged for a takeaway container well these guys do...Horrible experience !!!!!

Saffron Thai has been our "go-to" Thai restaurant for many years. Yellow Chicken Curry and Pad-Thai were the favourites. Unfortunately, our experience on Sat night will change that. The service was terrible as there was no staff! Food was okay, but has dropped off. A bit sad really!
Charlotte Cooper
Pad Thai and the duck is sensational, all the curries are very good as well.
I didn’t like the papaya salad, it’s not very sour or spicy, not a very authentic taste to me.
The service is a bit slow. We sat upstairs and no one would come and take our order. Other then that, it’s great

My Favourite Thai restaurant in bayside

Consistently tasty , and great service every time

MUST ORDER : Gang Kari Gai

this delicious treat is featured on the AGFG for a reason . It is creamy , with great flavours tender potato and well cooked chicken . Topped with crispy onions

The red and green curries are awesome with both fish OR chicken protein . Luscious gravies that arent oily and greasy on the palate.

A local favorite for Thai food. Excellent flavors and large portions. Standard has slightly gone down since restaurant changed ownership but quality is still great!
Bhender92
The food was great, however our experience was tarnished by the 50 minute wait for meals. Wanted to pop in for a quick eat, only ordered 1 course each and sat for 50 minutes watching and endless flood of takeaway orders get served. I think the management needs to rethink prioritising those sitting in the restaurant over the Uber eats orders. Our disgruntlement would have been alleviated by some acknowledgement from the staff about how long we waited or a discount off the bill.

I think most of these reviews are from when previous owners ran the restaurant. We live a 2 minute walk from this restaurant and gave it a try tonight. Unfortunately, it wasn’t a great meal. Far too much salt and additives. We commented when we were eating our meal that we’ll be taking a jug of water to bed tonight! Look , it’s average and some people might be ok with this type of Thai food but it’s far from the fresh authentic Thai meal you might expect. Won’t be back.

If you have allergies I would not eat here! Our waiter wrote down No Peanuts on our order, our order arrived covered in peanuts!!! They clearly don’t take allergies seriously!

We were seated upstairs this Saturday night, the narrow staircase led us up to a small area making it feel quite intimate.
The best of the dishes we sampled was the roti neur, the curry was very delicious. The garlic prawns was more like pepper prawns, felt it was a little underwhelming for the price as well. The pad thai was nice, on the less flavoursome side however compared to many others I've had before. Also disappointing was that the prawns were no longer served with this dish. The hoy jor was very average. Overall a good experience.
Sotasty
Wasn't a fan. Both of the dishes I had were over cooked. Satay skewers were deep fried and as always when doing so, they end up chewy. The fish was also deep fried with the same coating as the chicken and was overcooked. The combination between the chewy coating on the fish and fish skin makes it gross to eat. I couldn't even cut the fish. Yuck, won't return.

Surprisingly good. I only went because it was close to the cinema. It's rare to get terrible Thai food, as anyone can open a spice paste jar and make a tasty meal, but these guys stand out for three things:

1. Real Thai food, using fresh spices like kaffir lime leaves and fresh peppercorns.
2. Not sickly sweet. Most Thai restaurants are too heavy on the palm sugar.
3. Not the cheapest Thai place but the serving sizes were generous, so good bang for buck. Most Thai places will serve you a little copper pot with a few bits of chicken swimming in coconut milk - not here, and it is appreciated.

And a lovely casual atmosphere - although at first they did try to seat us upstairs in a cold and dark space, even though we had booked!

I'll be back.

Great local Thai place in Brighton. The restaurant is small inside, limited seating so book a table if dinning in. Takeaway is always great. My go to order is the green chicken curry, rice and roti. Great flavours and never disappointed.

60 dishes on menu
Must have great turnover to deliver this many meals fresh every day!!
Alas the service is very poor as i am only customer and three girls chatting!!!
Singha beer is not cold enough and served almost room temperature maybe fridges full of the 60 dishes that are prepped every day!!!!
Finally the three girls detach and i can order only to be told that duck has skin and bone!!!!! Seriously i said dont all ducks have skin and bone
Finished the lukewarm singha but had to get attention to order another beer!!!!!!
The spicy duck was not spicy so avoid
We ordered take away delivered to home. There were 4 of us.
Each of us is very picky with food.
We are all foodies who are not backward with coming forward with comments about what we DON'T like.
We all tried a bit of each of our chosen items.
We all were unanimous that the food was good!

I've been at the restaurant a few times and have always found it consistently good and it's always very busy but it is a small place.
Keep up the good work.
This was a lovely restaurant with traditional, fresh and delicious Thai food.
The staff are lovely and very attentive. They're aware of food allergies and try and accommodate as best they can.
The restaurant filled up very fast and the ambiance was lovely.
I recommend dropping in for a quick bite to eat, they will not disappoint!

The best Yellow Curry! Seriously do yourself a favour and give it a visit. All the other dishes are fantastic and great to share, great environment and its BYO (wine only).
LJTish
Really disappointed. Having not eaten here for a while I was so excited to be getting some takeaway tonight as it used to be amazing!
We ordered chicken satay entree, green curry chicken and ginger beef stir fry. The satay chicken was ok but we had the tiniest tub of satay sauce so had to use it sparingly! The chicken in the curry was really dry and the ginger beef, I'm not quite sure how to describe it except to say it was inedible :-( maybe we got them on a bad night but unfortunately we won't be back.
Louise
Its always pleasing to try a new restaurant and enjoy it so much, that you make immediate plans to return. TA seems to be the preference here as seating is tight.
Our order of (Chicken Larb, Pad Thai) was spot on ... composed, tasty and very fresh. The coriander popped, like it had been picked straight from your own garden. And the bill for our dinner was the cherry on top, fantastic.
Bella1
So pleased with all the dishes i ordered takeaway. Yummy fresh pad Thai, beef green and red chicken curry are deliciously. Only improvement would be the roti bread didn't have much flavour
La Contadina
Great consistent Thai food. Just wish they delivered, I'd order even more often! Best Thai in Brighton. The duck curry on the specials in amazing. Friendly service

Goog food, but far too noisy to enjoy.. We have eaten at Thai Saffron many times over the years and the food is generally very good. However, on every visit the restaurant has suffered from excessive noise problems. In the downstairs area the tables are carammed far too close together and besides the discompfort, the noise spoils the dining experience.
On our most recent visit we were upstairs and the space was mainly occupied by a large reunion group who were very excited and excessivly NOISY. We had to leave. The resuarant is to blame they are too interested in cramming in diners and spoil the dining experience as a result.
Ursula Betka
Great food, but keep away from noisy large group-bookings upstairs!. As usual the food was excellent! However, our booked table was upstairs right next to a table booked for a schoolgirl reunion of 18 ladies.! We could not hear each other speak unfortunately, and had to leave early before finishing our dinner due to the noise. The restaurant needs to establish a dedicated room for large group bookings such as these and not try to squash in ever more tables.
Jack Bee
A little noisy however the service and the quality of the food is excellent.
Please Sir Can I Have Some More
An oldie but a goodie, the must do Thai place in Bayside. Famous for its yellow curry with chicken, I believe its won an award in The Age. Just popped in for a quick meal with the ladies. Once again you will most likely have to book or you'll get stuck upstairs and miss out on the buzz of the downstairs restaurant. Whether its for take away or eat in Thai Saffron never disappoints. I do prefer to get take away from here, the acoustics aren't right and its hard to hear the person next to you. Entree: Thai fish cakes with sweet dipping sauce, I love my fish cakes chewy with the slight hint of fresh herbs. Main: THE FAMOUS YELLOW CURRY, chicken, potato, onion and natural yogurt. No matter what time of the year it is, this with a bit of rice and roti makes the heart strong. Main: Stir fry with chicken and cashew nuts PAD THAI - another tasty dish from Thai Saffron and a must order at any thai! To yum things up: a perfect take away meal for any night of the week, goo

Very surprised at any negative rating!. I've eaten here for years. Dine in and take away. The food has always been excellent, the staff always quick and friendly. Not one complaint. PLUS - their yellow chicken & potato curry is probably one of my favourite all-time dishes. Just to die for!! :-)

To Never Again. To "Never Again !!!!" Their opening hours are until 10pm, they could have nicely asked you to leave, but that is already late and they allowed you to stay 30 minutes past their closing time, meaning that's 30 extra minutes they have to pay all of their staff members and 30 minutes longer they had to stay on shift.

Maybe you should be more aware of others too.
MYNAMEISSAM
Food was excellent.

Overcooked and Tasteless. Stopped here for some take away on the way home. I thought it would be good based on how busy it was and the Urbanspoon rating. I'm always amazed when something is cooked so quickly but still overcooked. Chicken was very dried out and the sauce I had was tasteless. Won't bother stopping in again.

I agree I could eat there anytime.
The service was friendly when provided it's a stand back and see what happens type of service. A least their not pushy. There are lots of staff not doing much at all. We were seated and left without a drink order so I had to go to the counter to order a beer. Dessert is definitely not high on the menu, they didn't have two of the items available and the ice cream was almost rock solid. The pad thai was a little small but the beef curry was beautiful. I have had better curry puffs. Otherwise all our other choices were nice. Overall, the food is a must try, but the service has not changed in years.

THIS BY FAR IS OUR FAVOURITE THAI RESTAURANT..... I have tried many Thai restaurants as it is my favourite food and have found many good places to eat.... BUT THIS ONE RATES AS MY NUMBER ONE..... without a doubt.... i could eat here every night.....

One of my FAVOURITE Thai restaurants! Never left disappointed

Never Again !!!!. My girlfriends and I have been going to this restaurant for nearly as long as it has been open for. We booked dinner ,for an end of year catch up. We were all looking forward to good food and service, as in previous visits. The food as usual was cheap and delicious, unlike the service. I can't remember the last time I have treated in this way at a restaurant. At 10.00pm they cleared everything off the table in their parka's !!! At 10.30pm they came to us insisting that we left NOW as they had to clean the restaurant!! This was a Friday night !! I wish I had read some of the other recent reviews that have also mentioned the incredibly rude service recently, we might have taken our business else where.
NEVER AGAIN !!!!
Dsh
Consistent Performer. Tasty but not outstanding Thai food. I go here for consistency and quality of the food. Always well attended, dining in can be noisy but take away can be troublesome due to the shortage of parking in the area.
Tell It Like It Is Of Brighton
Love the food. After getting knocked by waiters in the cramped restaurant we now get takeaway. It is fast, great quality and a pleasure to deal with !
Yellow curry is fantastic!
John
Enough. Rude! won't be going back.
James Olsen
The food was below average and the atmosphere was very uninviting. But they were all positive compared to the service. It was nothing short of horrible. Rude arrogant and very poorly presented.

Yummy yum yum. This is my FAVOURITE Thai Restaurant in Melbourne. Wether we dine in or take away the food is always amazing. The Green and yellow curries are delish!! The Veggie spring rolls are beautifully crispy and tasty. Any dish we have tried we are impressed and the servings are massive too! But I ALWAYS seem to order the Green Curry because it is just so good!!!

On behelf of sfaff at saffron thai restaurant we definitely want to get a good services for everyone particularly the guess they get here without booking we try to find out the empty table for every as soon as posible but some people misunderstand us so sometime when i saw the review it make me fell slighted andthen im going to said we never force the guess to leave here . we great to service every costumer with my mind .welcome to Thai saffron ;))

AMAZING!. Big fan of Thai food and Thai Saffron is up there with the best Thai ive had. Had the chicken, cashew and vegetable stirfry with steam rice on the side and was so tasty and great flavour. Wasnt heavy on the sauce and was cooked to perfection. Fast service and highly recommend!!!
Julia Eats Melbourne
One of my favourites!. I have been going to Thai Saffron for years (well over a decade) and simply can't get enough. While this is not the most amazing restaurant you will ever go to, I rate Thai Saffron according to the price you pay, the large serving sizes and the amazing flavours in every dish. If you want a great experience I recommend sharing your dishes. My favourite dishes are the spicy Pad Bai Grapo and the prawn Pad Pong Garee (eaten with a serve of roti bread!). I used to love their jungle curry but sadly it's not spicy anymore (they have had too many complaints from customers - my motto is don't order a spicy dish if you can't handle it!). I will be returning, again and again - mainly for take-away though as the restaurant is very loud.
Sammie
Food was okay, but I felt like the staff were watching my every move, and in a way that was uncomfortable... like they wanted us to leave asap, not as if they were closing or anything it was barely 6pm. just shows that sometimes a high rating on urbanspoon doesn't always mean that you will receive the same type of service when you go there yourself. disappointed. wasn't that great anyways. don't bother with duck, massoman curry is nice but needs a better atmosphere I think

Can't get enough of this place. This food is always excellent, service is fast and the staff are immensely friendly. The best Thai food I have had outside of Thailand and better than most I've had in Thailand itself. Very good value indeed and if you order a takeaway, it only takes 10 minutes. My favourite dish is the Gai Tod. Had the beef massaman tonight which was very good. You can't go wrong with this place and it is always packed for all the reasons above.
Birdman
Great Thai food, best around. Travel from Richmond to get it
Con Petrou
Tick of approval. Get the Jungle Curry if you feel like administering some culinary paint stripper. It's hot.

Just got to get their Massaman off the specials board and onto the main menu. And stop serving it with apricots - THAT is why nobody orders it.
Sally-Ann Darling
Really bad food. Ordered takeaway tonight, the worst Thai food I have ever had
The dishes were incipid and lacked, spring rolls were heavy, roti bread was the one you buy in the supermarket, Pud Thai, prawns and chicken dishes were Inedible So disappointed
Hanstar21
Yumo!. This thai restaurant i highly recommend! Its a cosy restaurant in the heart of brighton and it has amazing food. We sat upstairs, the stairs are quite narrow but not a concern, and the food is very tasty and quick to come out. The prices of the menu are very good and the serving size is more then enough!! The pad thai is amazing and would suggest trying it! Would visit again in a heart beat!!

Good enough. Bought take away from here - the curries were nice, hit the spot. For my taste they didn't have much flavour beyond sweet, coconut and ginger. Which is nice, but not exciting (we had the yellow chicken curry and the red beef curry). They were a little rich and sweet for me, but maybe I'm a puritan and being a little harsh when compared to authentic thai. My girlfriend loved it. The roti was terrible, but I spose you don't go to a thai place for roti... The place was packed and looked awful for eat-in, but good enough for thai take-out.
Hanna L
Poor food. We are Asian and it is no where up to expectation. Too expensive fr quality. Our Tom Kha came out like a bowl of milk shake, with all the bubbles. Too late to get out now
Food LOve
Great food, sat upstairs and it was freezing. Poor service, asked us to leave the restaurant at 11 pm before we finished our drinks. No coffee!!
Ebony Aitken
Amazing! Really nice atmosphere, polite staff, and the best thai food I have ever tasted. My friend and I sat there for hours making sure we ate it all, as it was so nice! I highly recommend this lovely reataurant!!
David
The food was average and the lady I dealt with is the rudest pig I have ever dealt with. I felt like I was looked down on for being an aussie. Memo to her: politeness and hellos cost u nothing.
Jonnyboii
Been here with my girlfriend a few times now, best food I've ever had I don't think you could get Thai food any tastier anywhere!
Sweetlikesugar
We have been coming here for over 3 years now, and even though we don't live close by anymore we will still make the trip, as we did last night. Food is consistantly amazing, quick service. Hands down Best Thai in Melbourne.

Excellence. Read the review "Tasty Thai" and thought the opposite - I returned from Thailand recently only to state to my partner (while over there) that Thai Saffron still is the best Thai resturant I have been too (even sampling many food stops travelling through Thailand). Yes the take-away business is messy, with little room for pick-ups and if you sit on a table of +5 forget about trying to hear or join in any conversion, also the stairs to the second level resemble that of a backyard cubby house - but if you are a food lover (esp Thai) it is the place to go.
Barbiespice99
Just another Thai. We tried Thai Saffron last night. It's the kind of place that I would probably be happy for a quick midweek takeaway and nothing more.
My entree and main were fine, but nothing special. My partner said that he would never go back. He had the chicken skewers for entree which were exactly as someone else had commented-dry and chewy. The duck was boney and almost inedible.
Takeaway is obviously huge as the door is continually being opened and closed with the wind bucketing through. I would not want to come here in the winter!

Nice food and lovely restaurant

Love this place! Local Thai restaurant that serve great quality food at reasonable prices. Have been going here for years and will continue. Highly recommend.

OK but noisey.. Vote "I like it" but won't return. The food is good Thai, if limited menu.
The issue is that the place is so popular it is far too noisey. The take-away trade just keeps pouring in and going out and the noise from the patrons was unbearable, really!
Also, if booking, avoid the small window table beside the door. There is an electric deodoriser at face level that just overwhelms the area.
It's all a pity. The place is obviously so very popular and the food is great for the take away people.
I just wont be going back but "hey!" give it a try.
J
Lovely night. Was lucky to get a table without a booking ! Service and food was wonderful. Despite being very busy, we did not feel rushed at all. Only downfall was that we were situated right next to the door which gave us a few chills throughout the night.
Old Style Chef
Satay sauce is rich, thick & with bit of spice & very tasty. Chicken fillets are divine on skewers, nicely marinated. Red curry is sweet & spicy, good quality veggie & flavour authentic.
Mon
Simple and delicious. Simple, delicious food, easy style and prompt service - our table of eight easily accommodated in the busy mid-week rush. The Banquet option took the pressure off studying the menu and the servings were more than a match for the hungry teenagers at our table (they humbly admitted defeat!)
Iheartmelbourne
Went there for the first time last Friday night before heading to Dendy Cinemas and I was so glad we did. Ambience was bustling and cosy, waitresses friendly, kitchen clean but most of all the food was delicious and very fresh. Will make this Thai restaurant a regular.
MelbourneMiss
Tasty Thai. My companions thought this was the best Thai food in Melbourne. I didn't, but I've relatively recently returned from a holiday in Thailand so my memories of what the food "should" taste like were still fresh in my mind.

For entrees we shared the fried prawn (essentially a prawn wrapped in a wonton wrapper and deep fried with a sweet/sour sauce - it was just OK), fish cakes (excellent) and chicken satays (not so good. When the menu says "grilled" I expect grilled. These were deep fried and had been sitting around for a while as they weren't piping hot and a bit dry and chewy).

For mains we had a the jungle curry (extremely spicy and extremely delicious), chicken/seafood pad thai (very good although a touch too sweet for my taste), naan (excellent) and steamed rice.

Service was attentive and efficient. It was a bit cramped inside but cute and warming on a winter's night.

I would be unlikely to return as I don't live on this side of town but for a decent Thai dining destination, you can't go wrong with Thai Saffron.
FoodDude
Best Thai in Bayside. Awesome little restaurant with a nice atmosphere and the food is beautiful. I have been to heaps of Thai restaurants and this one is the best I have been to. I recommend this to anyone looking to have a nice meal with friends or with your partner. Can't name a dish I didn't like. It was all good.
Jilly
Lovely!. Great food and lovely welcoming staff. Will go again!

The Best Thai!. Great thai food and very reasonable price. I partiulary love the take away - great service to!
Michael Alf
Beautiful Thai dishes. Lovely. We had the menu B with friends - great!
Paul
Nice place. The prices are very reasonable, and the food is tasty and food is served hot.

The place is good but I am not sure if this is the best thai restaurant I have ever been too?
Dean Webber
It's a fine meal. Not the best representation on traditional thai but good affordable night out.
SarahAnnie
Vegetarian Pad Thai. Delicious, reliable, fast and efficient. What more could you ask for?!
Ben Kay
Great food, had a pad Thai and stir fry chicken with chilli jam both really good. Vegetarian spring rolls probably the best I've had. Well priced as well
Tracey Rubin
Awesome, tasty food! Been going to Thai Saffron for years and have never had a bad meal. Best Pad Thai outside of Thailand! Sadly we don't eat in much anymore as it is too small to cater for our 2 small children. Take away great though! Recommended!

No Thai Food?. I should start by saying that we went to Thai Saffron mid-week in a group of 14 people and had the set menu. We have heard about this place previously and many locals swear by it, but we had not been ourselves.

While the starters were decent Thai staples, the main courses were a mixture of Chinese Stir Fried Vegetables, Beef with Cashews in what can only be described as Black Bean sauce from a can and the mildest, weakest, Chicken Korma I have ever eaten. We were told that it was "Yellow Curry", but it certainly tasted like Korma especially given the tub of yoghurt which was dumped on top of each dish.

I'm sad to say that we found this place to be very poor. I will try to give it a second chance and go back at some point, this time ordering from the menu in the hope that it's better.

As with a lot of these restaurants I often wonder if people rating them have ever eaten real Thai or Indian food.
