Review Happy Boy - Brisbane

Jana
Very good food. The eggplant dish was 10 out of 10. Fantastic interior! Service was great. Would’ve given 5 stars but one of the servers couldn’t explain the menu. Otherwise very good experience.

3.75 ⭐️ - Pleasantly surprised, got the chef's banquet and its value is bang for buck. The service however was notably disappointing and some of the waiters had terrible attitude. Some of dishes we got were also from snackman: 🥟 Prawn & pork wontons - delicious, perfect balance of flavours 🥟 Ham Sui Gok (beef dumpling) - bland, not like the ones you get from yumcha 🥟 Salt & pepper prawns - highly recommended, cooked perfectly and seasoned well 🥟 House fried rice - dry and underwhelming 🥟 Flash fried lamb - tasted like a falafel, wasn't a fan of the spices 🥟 Eggplant with pork belly - interesting dish, pork belly was very mushy so didn't really enjoy that 🥟 3 cup chicken - can't go wrong with this, was just like a sweet & sour pork 🥟 Deep fried icecream - generous size, choc sauce was bitter and overpowering

Ordered the mapo tofu and the fish slice in oil, not to my Sichuan style standard, but after a few days of no spicy food in Brisbane, these taste “ok”. One steam rice bowl is enough for 2 person. Atmosphere is good, and the staff is friendly and good service.

I had a good dinner with my friend. The staff were kind, and especially broccoli and truffle fried rice and duck fancake were so delicious
Nigel
Called in for a quick lunch has I had heard good things about their Wontons, they were so good and the broth perfect with a bit of kick Also enjoyed the Duck pancakes and will definitely be back to try other dishes on the menu

I was here for dinner during my trip in Brisbane, and I was drawn to this restaurant because I was a fiend for some chongqing chilli chicken, a meal that was so fantastical in this one restaurant back in Sydney that has now closed down. From the first sight, the exteriors of this place was very pretty and a lot fancier than I had expected it to be. The address of this place states under fairy lit trees and it was literally under fairy lit trees, and it looked so nice. We entered and was seated pretty quickly. It was a busy Sunday evening so it was a near full house. We started off with some red wine and placed our order shortly. We had the chongqing chilli chicken, salt and pepper prawns, and the prawn and pork wontons in chilli broth. To say that the food here was great is a complete understatement, because this is very well the best Chinese food experience ive ever had in my life. They say that the dingier these asian restaurants are the better the food would be but this just went above and beyond that, because the food here has well exceeded my expectations, and the venue is modern and artistically designed. The chongqing chilli chicken was incredible, maybe even better than what I had in Sydney, and there was so much of it that I had to have it takeaway. The salt and pepper prawns were also delicious, it didnt taste super doughy or had a weird bitter taste in its crumb, it was flavourful throughout each bite, and the same could be said about the wontons as well. It wasnt too spicy at all, neither was the chicken, and the broth simply enhanced its flavour to the absolute highest level. Its a shame that they dont have a chain of this over in Sydney, but maybe that would diminish its quality and exclusivity if it happens. Regardless, this will definitely be a place I will come back to when I eventually return to Brisbane for another trip, because this was one of my highlights for sure

I had to scroll through the most recent reviews to make sure nobody else said this, but I couldn’t find anything SOOOO. This place sure made me a Happy Boy! We didn’t make a reservation but they sat us down at a table that had a reservation in an hours time. They assured us the food would come out quickly so we sat down. BAM food out in the first 10 minutes! It was all very flavourful, well portioned and extremely tender! Nothing missed and they were all straight bangers. Wait staff were very attentive and polite, felt like fine dining without the price tag! Love it, not many places I would say “I’d come back here to try something else”. Good job Good Boy on raising Brisbane’s food game!

Had one of the yummiest asian fusion meals here. Delicious food, reasonable prices and good service. Will definitely go back and try all the items in the menu.

Really like the new location. Perfect warm evening to take advantage of the openness to the outside. Brought our friends from Melbourne who very much enjoyed the food and vibe the last couple of times at the previous Spring Hill spot. This time, the food was excellent as usual, especially the eggplant and pork belly dish. The wine choices work well with the food. Again we were the geriatric group as Happy Boy has a very young noisy industrial vibe. No complaints there - the food is worth it. My only gripe is that once the meal was complete, we were left at the table without it being wiped down. Quite surprising given the otherwise efficient and knowledgable service. We will return.

we came here on a friday night and it was packed so definitely recommend making a booking. while we waited for our table to be set up we ordered drinks from the bar. they have some yum cocktails mixed with tea. the place is super noisy so not the place to have a deep conversation. we went for the banquet which was delicious and enough food to fill everyone. they provided well for vegetarians too. there's quite a few items on the menu that can be ordered gluten free too if you need it.

Oh mah good gad damn! Best dinner in a loooong time. Thanks Happy Boy, now I've got to go rate everything else I've ever reviewed down to 4 stars, to make each and every one of the 5 stars you earned tonight truly count! My mum, who's been eating mapo tofu from any Chinese restaurant we've ever gone to in the last 20 years said this one was probably the best. The salt and pepper prawns were second to none, and my favourite dish of the night, despite very fierce competition from the Beijing duck pancakes. Beef chow ho fun tasted just perfect too.

Love love love this place - the service and food are exceptional. Great value for money - best little place to grab your lunch or takeaway dinner. Highly recommend the pork and prawn wontons in chilli oil and the eggplant curry

OK so we went here tonight for the first time because we live in Sydney and this a nearby busy food place from the hotel we are staying in. We ordered deep fried quail eggs-YUM!, Braised pork belly-Adobo taste like which triggered my appetite and made me more eat the fried rice (considering I stopped or I'd say rarely eat rice for the past 2-3 years after moving and decided to study nursing here in Australia) HAHAHAHAAnd what makes it stand out for me was their professional, friendly and smiling staff And, that's what you want!!! All in one!!! Keep up the good work guys and continue to be the best of all Chinese restaurants I have ever visited. You really deserve a 5 stars!!! You also hired the most friendliest and professional staff that you can ever find in a Chinese resto. Because to be honest, even the food was excellent but the service wasn't good a resto shouldnt get even a 1 star. Congrats guys!

O.M.G. This is the most amazing chinese food in all of Brisbane!! The staff are all welcoming and very nice. The service was fantastic and so fast! Loved the hidden gem vibe of this place! Seriously my new fav restaurant! Thank you thank you for a wonderful meal!

My family brought me here for my birthday last night - had never ever heard of it! A hole in the wall in a small street in Spring Hill with the most delicious food being served up! Their menu is not like most Asian restaurants which is good cause wasn't in the mood for Chinese food - what they served up was unbelievable - the flavours were amazing. Tasted Asian but at the same time had modern taste to it as well. The place was packed and buzzing, and that was a Tuesday night! Definitely need to book. Highly recommend!

Happy boy is A-MAZING! We have been regulars since they opened in Spring Hill and every time the food & experience has been wonderful! I love the new location with the high ceilings and way more tables + staff are always super friendly & efficient. Also. Go there for breakfast! It is so affordable and also refreshing to have unique options - can’t go past the breakfast fried rice

Awesome food and people, can’t recommend it enough. Also try the new breakfast menu

Excellent food, fast service, very hip and happening, some interesting wines on the list, many by the glass. We had a nice crisp Australian Riesling, Meadow Bank I think and should know but will amend when I confirm. Great quick meal to head on out somewhere else after or round off a great night out.

Visited Happy Boy for family dinner for Mothers Day...food was delicious...would have liked to see a drinks menu though. Decor was great but a bit noisy- lucky we were a table of 4 - would have struggled if in a bigger group. Would love to eat here again and will happily recommend.

Arrived from Sydney on Sunday morning. Going around whole day. Had dinner at Happy Boy at 6pm, the food is very tasty blended very well with boutique wines. Salt and Peppe Quail eggs and Prawn & pork wontons in chilly broth are the must. If you can't handle chilly, Don't be put off by "chilly broth", it was mild but you can ask for a touch of chilly or none. They are very tasty. This place is truely hidden gem .

Happy Boy never fails to impress. Love the new location. Great work Jordan and Cameron. My most recent visit had my foodie Sydney friends raving about the food and the amazing wine list. Keep it up!

What a disappointment! I've eaten at a happy Boy in Spring Hill and was happy to recommend to all and sundry. I am part of a dinner group willing to try the new venue. We've had the banquet at the previous venue and raved about it. The banquet we had this week was the worst dinner we have ever had. Not one redeeming feature for the whole evening. Each dish was tasteless, the atmosphere was soulless and the space extraordinarily noisy. It felt like a noisy, unfriendly cafeteria with terrible food. This was the opinion of each person in the group.

Beyond excited that they are now serving breakfast ... what could be better than a breakfast fried rice ... mapo haloumi ... all washed down w a cheeky little rose'. 😋😋

Absolutely the best dinner I have had in so long. Amazing flavours, decent serves, and well priced. Up from Melbourne for the weekend and this rivals the Flower Drum. Seriously. Thank you for having us.

The venue looks good, albeit very noisy. The food was of a high standard, I particularly enjoyed the won-tons and the eggplant and roast pork belly.<br/>Would happily revisit

Located in near the tree with the fairy lights in the Valley, this restaurant isn’t much to look at. The decor is very simple. However their food is very nice. Their banquets are also very decently priced and you get a lot of food. Very generous. You won’t go hungry here.

Whilst the quality of food remains high, the service has significantly dropped at this restaurant over the last 12 months. Several times we had to wave down a waiter to order drinks and food as they weren’t attentive. Towards the end of our booking we were asked to relocate to another table (whilst we were still eating and talking) so that it could be used for a larger booking. We just left without ordering dessert. Would return, but maybe as a Uber eats customer.
Bianca Bachman
Very efficient service and delicious food! Would go back

Food was just amazing. The service was great, ability to book was great, setting/ambience was really clean, modern and fresh. Can't fault this place, will be back!

Everything was lovely. We got the banquet to share and everything was super tasty. Only negative is that the duck was a bit over cooked.

Overall score: 18/25 or ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️<br/>in 5 words: chinese meal in western setting<br/>*<br/>💬 Review: i am generally skeptical about asian fusion. But my doubts were washed away after my dinner here. The appeal of this place is that you can have good chinese food in a beautiful setting, which is ideal for group and office dinners.<br/><br/>Haven’t had a vege dish like the broccolini with burnt butter and black bean sauce. Enjoyed it so much that I was sad to see the end of it. The Sichuan fish was “tamed” because it had more subtle hints of peppercorn compared to the ones served in traditional Sichuan restaurants. Fried rice wasn’t too oily and had generous amounts of shredded duck and preserved vege. My partner and I concluded that to really enjoy our meal here, it’s best not to compare it to traditional chinese places. Happy Boy has proven that asian food in a western setting can be pretty good too. And oh, did I mention the wide ranging alcohol selection?<br/>*<br/>Taste: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️<br/>Ambience: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️<br/>Presentation: ⭐️⭐️⭐️<br/>Price: ⭐️⭐️⭐️<br/>Service: ⭐️⭐️⭐️

We came here for a team lunch and I enjoyed it more than I thought I would. While I wouldn't call it an authentic Chinese restaurant, the food was still delicious and I liked the feel of the place as well.

I love this place. Been here many many times. No complaints. Great reasonably priced food and wine. Noisy and vibrant and buzzy and delicious. A tick in every box.

Came here on Friday night with my friends. Happy Boy is located separated from most of the other restaurants, but still easy to access to by public transport. The place has inner seating which is dominated by plain white walls, as well as the outer deck which has the string lights over the nearby trees.<br/><br/>I put up my hands to call the staff and place an order, yet no one comes or even saw me for more than 10 minutes. The service could have been better.<br/><br/>Ordered the Salt & Pepper Tofu, Chicken Wings, Crispy Pork Belly Chinese BBQ, Sea Fried Rice, as well as the Twice Cooked Dry Sticky Beef Rib. <br/><br/>The Tofu was showered in fried shallot, perfect to be eaten with white rice. The Chicken Wing was okay; it was nice but not very impressive. The Crispy Pork Belly was inconsistent, some bits were nice and crunchy, but others were a bit lumpy. I personally think that the Crispy Pork Belly could have been better. The Sea Fried Rice was okay, but I can only taste the pepper which overwhelms other flavours in the fried rice. However, my favourite was the Twice Cooked Dry Sticky Beef Rib. The meat was very tender, easily chewed, perfectly flavoured. The sweetness was perfectly balanced and not overpowering.<br/><br/>All in all, it was a great experience. I might come back here in the future to enjoy the Twice Cooked Dry Sticky Beef Rib.

Recent visit to this hidden gem did not disappoint though I must say the acoustics in this place are non-existent.<br/>As a group of six for ease we ordered the $45 banquet and we did not leave hungry. That being said I think if we had ordered individually and shared it may have been a more economical option. One highlight outside of the banquet menu was the fish in Sichuan chili broth - outstanding<br/><br/>Service was good on a busy midweek night, will def be back

If you enjoying eating in a foundry, this restaurant may be exactly what you enjoy.  Happy Boy was memorable, but for all the wrong reasons.  The food was unexceptional, the service variable and the ambiance horrible. The floor is polished concrete, and the walls and ceiling are all bare concrete, i.e. highly sound reflective surfaces everywhere with no sound deadening anywhere.  The noise made conversation sufficiently difficult, that, by itself it, was sufficient reason never to return. We were a party of six that ordered the more expensive of the banquet options.  Some dishes were better than others, but the overall standard was no better than can be found in the seventy or so chinese restaurants to be found in central Sunnybank.  The quantities of each dish were barely adequate and there was no real provision for one of our party who has coeliac problems.  Service varied from good to off-hand, depending on which member of staff was attending to our table (staff seemed to float between tables rather than having tables assigned to them).  Summary - Unless you are a connoisseur of cacophony, Happy Boy has little to recommend it.

Went here for dinner. Got there early 6:30 but it was busy already. The best dish was sticky beef rib. The mapo tofu was the right amount of chilli.

First time being here, great and affordable food. Love the atmosphere, and also very friendly waitress. Had a different kind of chinese food menu.<br/>Love to come back!

It’s a very cool restaurant located near James Street. The design of the restaurant is quite simple and clean. My husband and I were the only Asian in the restaurant and I think it’s because of the price and location. Most of the Asian could have go to Sunny Bank for this type of dishes. We love the chef special and it makes me feel like home (Hong Kong). Must try the tou fu and fry beans. Authentic Asian food at the Newstead / Valley area. Quite full at the house, so need booking before you go!
Albino Diner
Always spot on. Great service , vibe and prices (a rarity !). The chili chicken, salt and pepper tofu Eggplant with pork belly a must, really you can’t go wrong
Spice Is Life
Came here on a weekday for their lunch special. Chose the roast duck with rice, which at $14, was a decent serve. We’ll have to try it with Dry Egg Noodle next time!<br/><br/>This is likely one of the better ones, if not the best roast duck around the CBD. Could not fault the meal, but air conditioning on a sweltering hot day would have made the experience a 5.

Iron Fist, being somewhat fond of Asian food has long been telling me to go and eat at Happy Boy. Adding it to my extensive list of places to try but never really making too much of an effort, I didn't think too much of it until Adam decided to take me there to try their new brunch menu. Originally located in Spring Hill, they're now located at Fortitude Valley, along East Street (coincidence? I'm unsure). Being a fusion take on Chinese food, I was curious to see how it would compare to the more traditional styles of Chinese breakfast that you could get at Sunnybank. Arriving at 9.30AM, we were the third table there.

A repeat visitor to Happy Boy for good reason. The quality is amazing, portions huge and the price is outstanding. Highly recommend the beef stew and eggplant with pork dish. This place is hard to beat!
Mildred
Excellent. Delicious contemporary Chinese food, really well done. The service is extremely fast & efficient, the space is big & contemporary, quite beautiful under the lights of the big tree outside.

We booked a table for four a couple of hours before arriving and lucky we did- this place is really popular. Large tables set up outside under the large trees covered in fairy lights. It’s a bit more industrial looking inside this Asian restaurant. We were seated and given menus and water. Wines by the glass are displayed above the counter and other drinks are on the menu. We selected a lot of food as it all sounded delicious- it was. There were vegetable spring rolls- crunchy and tasty. A seafood omelette was huge and served with a chilli style salsa. Prawn and pork wontons served in an XO sauce disappeared as soon as they arrived. Crab bun was next and received a rave review! Seafood fried rice which was a generous portion and a beef stir fry with rice noodles was given the thumbs up. Finally the broccolini with black beans and butter tasted so good and went well with the steamed fish in chilli broth- the highlight dish for me. Service was friendly and quick. Well priced and very well cooked food. They are opening a cocktail bar next door soon so a place to have a drink before dinner or while you wait for a table!

We had the $35/person set menu and there was so much damn food. <br/><br/>Salt and pepper quail eggs, spring rolls and chicken wings to start.<br/>Duck fried rice, eggplant and pork belly, beef stew with noodle knots came after. <br/>Followed by roast duck, Chongqing Chilli Chicken and Dry Fried Green Beans with Pork<br/><br/>They also have their own house lager on tap, which was a nice drink with the food. SO MUCH FOOD. OMG. <br/><br/>This was freaking amazing. I was SO FULL after.

First thing.. very spacious!<br/>Food is decent, take away available, fast delivery, quantity is not enough or sufficient if you are really hungry. Vegetarian option available.

Went to happy boy today for lunch, I ordered the red braised pork with steamed rice which was very nice. The pork belly was extremely tender and had great flavour. The place is modern and has a nice layout, definitely keen to revisit to try more items off the menu.
Made_guy82
This place is really awesome. Their food is spot on, authentic sichuan. A couple of things like the chewy pork I haven't had since being in China. <br/>The restaurant itself is super simple, but elegant, and their focus on wines is apparent in the huge wine fridges in the middle of the back bar stocked with a bunch of interesting stuff to wade through. <br/>Service is great and the food is priced so reasonably it was kind of a shock considering the quality and the restaurant itself. <br/>Definitely one of the go to restaurants in Brisbane.
Mea'ai Vela
Very, very expensive menu for the portion sizes. The chicken wings were awful - dry and so small!! It was an entree for a 4 year old. I hated the fact it was like we were being watched when we were eating. Waiters and waitresses were often circling our table and quick to pounce when we finished each plate and take them away. It was really annoying. Don’t dine here if you’re after an intimate, private dinner.

I was always going to be skeptical of any venue serving Chinese cuisine outside of South Brisbane. I’ve come to know and love the price, portions and undeniable palatability of our beloved cheap and cheerful venues within my local sunnybank region. Happy boy however, took me to a place where I was able to appreciate the finer touches and justify the extra $3-$4. The quality of produce is undeniable. The textures and complexity within the dishes spoke of well thought out flavor profiles that combined western technique with modern Chinese flavors. Some would say that this type of venue takes away from the authenticity of Chinese cuisine and although I would somewhat agree, in this case I feel it has been done elegantly and right on brief. At the end of the day it’s all about listening to your customer and supplying a demand. Happy boy only needs to change its name to happy boys and girls because that is exactly what it delivers. Will be back to keep working through the menu. Recommend only to those open to challenging tradition and enjoying life’s smaller details.
Tasty J
The food is so yum, some of the dishes are high level authentic Chinese food. It is the best in this area. I recommend the lamb, eggplant and the fish.
John Orolfo
The food is amazing as always both breakfast and dinner. Friendliest staff ever. always happy to serve. Hands down one of my favourite place to eat in. Worth the half an hour drive! <br/>
Craig Pennell
The quality of staff here is second to none! Always kind and calm and friendly. The food is also prepared fast but incredibly delicious - cannot fault the menu! I come here almost weekly now just to try new foods and enjoy the regulars (fried quail eggs and sticky beef ribs are perfection)
Little Man
Over rated!  Wontons were dry and pork belly was very very fatty.  The fried rice was fantastic and the duck pancakes and chilli chicken were both nice.  We felt very rushed, although the team were very accommodating when we requested to finish our wine out on the deck.  Wont be going back.
Peruvian Palate
Came here for lunch and wasn’t happy with the amount of time we had to wait for someone to come and take our order. The venue wasn’t busy at all. I ordered the spicy chicken lunch special with fried rice instead of white. Order was brought with white and when told them it was the wrong order they said it would be another 10 minute wait! No apology or anything. Obviously couldn’t wait another 10 minutes on my lunch break.
Breakfasts&Burgers
Sooooo good. Affordable lunch options and oh so tasty. Good size portions as well. Did take a little while to take our order but it was a<br/>Friday lunch.
Kat
Five of us Dined here on a Friday night and got the banquet as we couldn’t decide what to get. The value is good for money if you want to be able to try everything. Our impression is that it’s a westernised Asian fusion style flavours where dishes are quite tasty yet simple. For the banquet we received for entree vegetarian spring rolls, dim sims, crispy chicken wings and for mains Crispy roast pork, pork and egg plant, braised pork, a beef stew and some broccoli. Minor Cons were that the beef stew was a little bit tough and bland, and broccoli slightly too salty. Service was friendly, fast and efficient. Overall An enjoyable night and we would probably return to try some of the other popular dishes.
Bec B
Amazingly fresh tasty Chinese food. Setting is very cool and simplistic. Service is friendly, but they are often busy. Everything I’ve tried here is so tasty and really great value

I have always been a happy boy fan and recommended it when possible. Last night was my first time since they moved venues and I have to say I don’t think I’ll be back. The staff are so rude and especially the man behind the bar who completely ignored my friend and I. He then proceeded to be so rude when we were ordering wine that the whole experience was ruined. The food is still delicious but the staff had so much attitude that it felt like a totally different vibe and restaurant. Even the table next to us made the same comment. I came with a group of people and we all said we wouldn’t return due to the service. This is a shame because the food is actually good. It’s funny how much customer service effects your whole meal experience!!
Bronwyn
This is one of the noisiest restaurants that I have experienced, high ceiling and concrete floor with zero decoration. Absolutely no ambience and no pretension of it. It makes a statement, you are here for the food and high quality wine, you will be served rapidly with entrees and mains served almost simultaneously and your plates will be removed promptly. <br/>The food is fabulous but I wouldn't return despite its delicious quality. <br/>I felt as though I was eating in a shopping centre outlet with very little time to appreciate the extraordinary Asian food.
Nat ❤️s Food
My friend and I really wanted a banquet so we could have a bit of everything. No one else would do a banquet for two until I spoke to Cameron, the owner of Happy Boy who said that they don't ordinarily do banquets for two but would look after us. Oh gee, that's what happened. 11 dishes later... 😳👌🏼 the food was just amazing, service of your team was attentive and fun. They all well explained each dish and how it would be best enjoyed. Thank you soooo much for looking after us!! Could not recommend you guys more!!
Andre
Unfortunately they had a bad night. Chicken wings were very dry and over cooked. The steamed rice was the same. No soap in the toilets either. Did not enjoy the experience that night. Bottle of white wine came out and had to ask for a wine bucket.. Been here when it was at Springhill and it was great but tonight was a flop.
Bridget
First time at Happy Boy tonight and we're so glad they've moved to the Valley. Wonderful service to start with and we loved our table, right at the back in the corner. The view of the fairy lights in the fig trees was so lovely. We ordered the fried rice with duck and the braised beef stew and some crispy pork belly sliders to start. The wine recommendation was spot on - try the grenache if you like a red! The food was tasty and the flavours gorgeous but not heavy. The waitstaff were friendly and down to earth although they did forget our second drinks order. The restaurant had a good vibe and we will be back to try some more of their delicious food soon.
Samuel Hawkins
Great vibe and fantastic service. Food was ok but perhaps not as full of flavour as expected from Chinese food, very decent selection of local wines and the staff and exceptional.
Coffee Lover
This is a hidden little gem in spring hill. It has a really great, buzzing atmosphere and amazing service. The staff were very accommodating and friendly, and the food came out very quickly. <br/><br/>Loved the food! The portions were very big. And all very tasty and cooked perfectly.<br/><br/>Can't wait to go back and will be recommending this place to friends and family. <br/><br/>
Brandon Do
Hidden location but great environment. All the food is prepared by a caucasion chef but to Asian standards. Dishes are perfected and you will receive great customer service here. Defiantly book a table in advance.
Sushi To Sundaes
When the urge for duck and pork belly hit, you just have to give in and we definitely left this establishment one very happy boy and girl. The service was helpful and efficient and offered guidance on how much to order. We listened to this advice and ordered two entrees and two larger dishes to share with a serve of steamed rice. This was more than enough and we left stuffed to the brim.
Celeste Brooke
Can't wait to travel to Brisbane again to come back here! From the moment we walked in and were seated we felt so welcome. From the friendly staff / service to the awesome atmosphere and rustic vibe, to the awesome food, everything was perfect... Food was all delicious and relatively cheap for high end Asian. We ordered 5 dishes and loved them all. Would highly recommend. Great large servings and most importantly so yum and fresh!
Kim Leo
Been here few times, they are amazing. I had most tasty Chinese food here, even it is not hosted by Chinese.<br/><br/>Recommend the fish, which is flavored with Sichuan chili, it is just spicy enough for people stay Sichuan years like me.<br/><br/>Also the fried rices and noodles here, really good.
Atreyu
TL;DR: Happy Boy is funky not only in vibe and atmosphere, but also with the care given to the food. Make no mistake, this is some of the highest quality Chinese cuisine anywhere in town. All the aspects work to make it so, and this is the place to be seen. You will be treated to some good service, and will want to stay to soak it in even more. <br/><br/>I have this twisted view-point when it comes to what people refer to as "hidden gems", and the places that require a bit of searching for to be found. For one thing, I definitely understand the appeal of how something is off the beaten track a bit, and remains relatively unknown - there is definitely that appeal walking in and only seeing a few people there, solitude and whatnot. On this other hand, any place that opens up - even if I absolutely hate it - I still want to see do well. And that goes to when many times I have found a small or upcoming eatery, many times when I have liked it a lot a common quip is that it deserves to have more love. So in other words, the hidden gems often should not remain hidden gems if they are good enough on their own merit. And that can happen, and the love given in the business gets the pay-off it deserves. Such is the case with Spring Hill's Happy Boy.<br/><br/>My brother in law was staying in town for a few days, and earlier on in the week had messaged me proposing meeting for dinner somewhere within the city. I did have a busy schedule, but I do manage to fit as much as I can in - especially keeping some time to be social and everything. The preference was for it to be around the city center, and with him being in Spring Hill way the northern part was the go. After looking at what there was around there, it came down to a coin toss between one of two places (both of which were on my radar). Well, this won out and later on I was meeting him. <br/><br/>There is no kidding around when it is saying that Happy Boy is still relatively hidden, along with substantiating whatever the hell was said at the start of this review. Brisbane has really begun to use the lane ways a lot with businesses and eateries but this was possibly the hipster version of that - doing it before it was considered cool (by Brisbane standards - this is old hat in Melbourne). After going up all the main streets in the city center, and entering Camp Hill the lights suddenly turn a little low and we are in a residential area. But you can smell the aromas of Chinese cooking, and hear a buzz of noise around here. That is the indication that Happy Boy is nearby. <br/><br/>Across from a set of apartments, this building might have been a shed, garage or something, since it is pretty square, has a lot of exposed brick, and is a cosy, warm kind of place. It is packed to the brim with diners, and bookings are frequent; by sheer luck there was an hour or so the two of us could fit in the meal and be done, it was that popular. With so many people there, it is a loud and vibrant atmosphere with so many people having a good time. <br/><br/>When a place is this busy, it provides one of the best opportunities to assess just how good the service is. And the customer service is at a decent level here. The waitstaff are in constant motion, always manage to have such a smile on their face and know the right timing to take things away from the table. Not that either of us had anywhere to be, but with the idea of how quickly it would take the food did take a while to arrive at the table. I am a forgiving man, and with so many clients to service a bit of compromise is necessary. Still though, the service managed to keep sharp all through the night. <br/><br/>That was readily apparent walking in the door. Some tables were being cleared, and soon a spot was going to open - all that was needed was to wait a few minutes, and that was all good. Bonus points are something that I have a nose for with customer service, and this one provided a good example. While we waited, the waiter offered us some drinks and one of them was coffee. Therefore, it was the usual doppio that I had which was quite nice. I don't know if I caught what the blend was or anything, but regardless of that case it was a strong, and smoothly textured drink that started the night off really well. <br/><br/>It is a pretty specialised cuisine that they have here, going for the star player of Chinese cuisine - none other than some good old Sichuan cuisine. Something about just how vibrant it is, and all the spices, makes for any meal that has it to be one exciting fare. There is something for everyone there, offering seafood, noodles, and some starters among many others. Plus, it is one page long but almost each item is as tempting as the last.<br/><br/>Starting off with some entrees, each of us got a gua bao along with sharing an order of the duck pancakes and the salt and pepper quail eggs. These were overall a good start for what was to come. Maybe a weak spot might have been the duck pancakes, which had nothing wrong with them per se, but they certainly managed to lack the vibrancy of other items ordered. The duck meat was tasty and crispy, the rest of the items were merely good. <br/><br/>Better yet was the gua bao, which more or less was like a mini-burger, complete with tender pork that had a crispy crackling, and a kewpie mayonnaise to compliment it. The bun was both tender and crispy, making it all for a delicious starter. These are worth getting. However, the one thing I was looking forward to was trying out their salt and pepper quail eggs. Words are hard to use to describe why these work, but put it this way - even after all of the cooking, they were soft like a cloud and were moreish. If anything is to indicate what the chef can do, this is it. <br/><br/>Now we get onto the main dishes, and these were the highlights of the night. Before coming here, I had heard much about their flash fried lamb and how good it was - and that lives up to (maybe even beyond) the reputation it has. This sucker was a taste sensation. The lamb was crisp fried, and absolutely tender. We are talking about no grungy bits at all in any of the meat. Not only that, it was a fiery number that was tangy with plenty of aroma to spare. Finally, there is the Emperor's breakfast which was a prawn omelet with XO sauce. The contrast between the light, delicate egg was matched with the full-on taste of the XO sauce, and the amount of prawns in the mixture was generous; these were sweet and tasty, which rounded the whole meal off quite well. It was a nice contrast to the lamb dish. <br/><br/>It is safe to say that the food was fantastic, was filling, and that a great night out was had by all members around. The sum of its parts adds up pretty nicely, and there is a very good reason that it has managed to sustain its popularity. In fact, Happy Boy almost feels like the inner-north side's go-to place in many ways. <br/><br/>There are places out there that live well up to their hype, and this is definitely one of them. It is not only that I can see why people like it - the great food is one aspect - but the sentiments also come from a genuine place. Why this place works so well is hard to gauge, but I reckon a lot of it comes down to the overall vibe that it has. Too much is it that all the popular eating areas have to be in plain view on a main street; taking itself to one of the back roads makes for a significant part of its vibe and the funky atmosphere and fantastic food are just some additions to how great it really is. <br/><br/>To tie it all together, the fare is all at the hands of a chef who has been trained at Michelin-starred restaurants within Hong Kong, and that is about as good as it could get with Chinese cooking. And he knows what he is doing. Any semblance of subtlety is done away with and the way is given to some of the most full-on flavour that I have had in quite some time - it is especially good for those who like their food either spicy or smoky. But appropriately for Chinese cuisine, the vibe is well suited to the flavour of the food where it is vibrant and full of energy - so I would say it is a match and does it job pretty well.

I've been here a couple of times. Most recently visited with a large group and the food was amazing. Had the $35 banquet menu, and they were happy to adjust it slightly to accommodate requests (duck pancakes!) Service was attentive and quick. Wine list is excellent. This place is a winner.

Amazingly good, real Chinese food. I've been a few times now and the food is always fantastic. And authentic too apparently. We had a birthday dinner here last night for my brother, who lived in China for several years. He chose this place because he says it's the real deal, and he should know. Don't expect to find the regular suburban trash on the menu. No lemon chicken or sticky sugary sauces here. Just real Szechuan cuisine. <br/><br/>My favourite dishes are the quail eggs and wanton entrees. My brother's favourite main is the Mapo tofu (not vegetarian, not like the tofu dishes you might be used to, very hearty and it's got meat in it). But seriously, everything is good. Lots of gluten free options available too, which was great because we had a Coeliac in our group. <br/><br/>The only downside is it's very, VERY loud. If you want to have a conversation you will need to yell. They're going for a bare and modern garage/factory/industrial aesthetic, which means there are no soft furnishings (curtains/carpets/tablecloths) to soak up the noise. As someone with a background in sound and acoustics, I would really like to suggest they look for a novel solution to bring down the noise level without compromising the decor. Perhaps carpeting the ceiling? I know that sounds weird but it would really help to soak up the noise.

Any enjoyable aspect ruined by unbelievable Friday lunch noise. Surrounded by shouting diners so we couldn't hear each other. Manager on the way out laughed "you should hear it at dinner". Clearly no care factor.

Great concept, well implemented. The setting is basic but staff are friendly and genuine. But the highlight is the food. Again, simple yet delicious. I will bring others here.

I heard lots of good reviews. So we decided to visit with the family for my birthday. Great initial Melbournian atmosphere. It is an old garage converted. Having two young kids (1 and 4) we were assigned a nice corner table so we weren't too intrusive to other patrons. It's those little things. Then the food. This is by far the best Chinese restaurant in Brisbane to date. Food was just right. The roast pork perfect. I could not fault it. The only thing missing was some music, preferably background, as it's quite a hollow space. It's easily missed.

Last night I discovered Happy Boy, a hidden Gem in the heart of Brisbane City. Upon entry, you instantly feel like you're in a very clean old factory - the setting is very cool, but the hard factory walls make it a very noisy environment. Between 6 people, we shared about 7 dishes. The stand outs for me were the Hong Kong Long Spring Rolls, the Salt and Pepper Prawns and the delicious House Fried Rice. Typically this restaurant is very busy, so I would strongly suggest booking a table. Definitely a must try in Brisbane, but avoid some of the small dark alleys surrounding this area if you're walking.

Amazing food, excellent service and the price is fantastic! This is my go to place to take friends that are visiting from Brisbane. Food is consistently great, always draws a parade of compliments and is always brought out in a timely manner. The pork belly is my favourite, and on two occasions has been deemed 'the best pork belly I've ever eaten'. I would recommend making a booking however, as this place gets very busy and as a result the noise level is quite high. Keep up the good work guys!

Must try crispy chicken wings. The service is exceptional, wine and beer selection is good. The atmosphere is perfect for relied catch up with family and friends.<br/>We will be back 😇😍😛

Great location, in a history building and high ceiling provider very comfortable dinning hemisphere. As I am Australian Asian that I am very surprised how amazing Happy Boy's taste so well. Not very oil is the key with well balanced taste. Ingredients is fresh and very friendly and professional service. <br/><br/>Only downer is a bit too noisy.. hahaha but happy boy do making noise right?

Just awesome. I loved the decor and style. Restaurant is set in a garage like set up... No fuss... Food is just too awesome.would love to go there again. The place is pretty packed and I would recommend to make reservations.

It is a shame that a great food and atmosphere is smothered by hovering micro management. You can see staff is not relaxed and even uncomfortable because they have to tell you how to order your food (read: how fast to eat); as management is too concerned with how many sittings they get in one night. Wine ordering at the bar with an uptight pretentious barman is a chore; English butler has more personality and charisma than that guy. As there are so many good Asian fusion restaurants now, you can give this one a miss.

Visited this place as a single diner.Reservations are recommended though walk ins are accepted. The place is a clear reflection of the immense influence that Far East Asian people have had on Australia's food scene. The place is set in a warehouse like area with brick clad walls and bulbs hanging down from the ceiling to complement the look. The entrance is behind a narrow lane leading up to Bowen street and one can easily miss this place at night.<br/><br/>The service is friendly with minimal fuss. The food and drink menu isn't very elaborate with very few options to chose from but most of them are very popular amongst the locals.<br/>They have a wine list displayed neatly on a blackboard and local and international beers complete the list.<br/><br/>I chose to have the gong bao chicken which is a sweet and spicy preparation with diced onion, dried red chilli and peanuts accompanied with half a portion of vegetable fried rice. It took barely 10 minutes for the food to be served which was quite surprising as the place was packed to capacity!!<br/>The portion size was decent for one person.<br/>I also had a captains IPA beer ( brewed in Melbourne) which was chilled just right and beautifully complimented the spicy chicken.<br/>I was very satisfied with the overall dining experience and would certainly recommend this place if you crave asian street food!<br/>

Hipster snobs. Came here with the family at 5:30pm on a Saturday night. Restaurant with 30-odd empty tables but told they were full. Took the waitress about 10 minutes to bother coming over to speak to us after looking at her nails for a while. It's basically a garage door with some dining tables. I would suggest this place is only for hipster snobs who want to pay extra for very average Asian food. Many better alternatives.

Came in for dinner with friends, managed to get a booking in on a Thursday night. "Yes, don't forget to make a RESERVATION" I can see why people love this place, is close to the city and you can get some chinese food. but i wouldn't come here if i really want a decent Chinese meal, is not bad if is cooked by an Aussie. serving is small here so remember to order more.

The extensive menu has quail eggs, vegetable rice and salt and pepper tofu. Portions were too big but immense flavours. The venue was modern and a little gem. Only downside could work on greeting of guests

Man oh man, I consider myself lucky to have found this little gem! I was heading to Brisbane to dine at my 99th Top 100 (GOMA Restaurant) with some friends for lunch and I was catching up with an old school friend that night for dinner which, of course, presented another meal opportunity! I decided that Asian food was the go, so I started googling Asian food in Brisbane. I didn’t really want a run-of-the-mill Chinese restaurant, I wanted something a bit more exciting.  I kept looking at this place called Happy Boy in Spring Hill.  The reviews I read were all good but as soon as I saw the menu, my mind was made up!  Happy Boy it was. No more research required.

Food was actually good. They got a simple menu that's also easy to understand. Got a full wine bottle list and a couple of beers too. <br/><br/>But they should work on their customer service and atmosphere. The whole restaurant was quiet. There's no music playing at the background. The interior decorations were also simplistic. A bit too simple in my opinion.<br/><br/>Arrived at the door and told the waiter we want a table. The restaurant was quite empty but the waiter needs to check with the manager. The manager seems moody the whole time we were there and doesn't seem to be helpful. Apart from the waiter that seems to be new, the other staff including the manager doesn't seem to be that welcoming or friendly. The manager didn't even acknowledge us when we paid our bill and leave through the entrance, where he was standing around the whole time. We just assume for a new business, they would try a bit harder to be more friendly to new customers. Doesn't seem like they care much about our patronage. <br/><br/>And I almost forgot, one of the plates our dish came in has a big crack on one of the edges. This is unprofessional and also not a good sign for a new business. <br/><br/>Will not go back anytime soon.

The boy wanted Chinese without the linoleum, so we ended up here. Gorgeous ambience, friendly staff, amazing food and generous portions. Definitely coming back to try everything else.

Dinner for 2 on a Tuesday night. Had to wait around 15mins for a table but we didn't mind, although there is not a lot of space to wait without feeling like you're in the way. We were seated at a communal table which was fine for 2 people. Ordered the Crispy Skin Chicken, Flash Fried Lamb, Strange Taste Chicken Salad and Fried rice. The meals came out staggered which was fine as we didn't have enough space to fit all 4 of them in front of us at once, but the rice was the last thing to arrive when he had basically nothing left to eat with it which seems a little silly. Loved the Crispy Skin chicken and the Strange Taste Chicken Salad, however the lamb was chewy and in quite large pieces that were hard to eat with only chop sticks. The service was friendly and helpful and the vibe is really great and not too noisy and most of the food was delicious so I will be back!

Wow what an amazing taste sensation.  Julian our waiter was brilliant too.  We rang the bar quite late in the afternoon to find they were booked out for when we wanted to eat that night. We understood given our late arrangements. Within half an hour though, they called us back to say they had a cancellation at 7.30 and offered us a table.  Tick!  Great customer service!  We arrived to a small queue at the bar area.  Within a minute of arriving, a bar waiter acknowledged our presence and within a few seconds Julian ushered us to our table for two. Tick #2!  Attentive wait service. We asked Julian for his recommendation given that we enjoy a bit of heat and spice.  He referred us to the Fish Slice Drowned in Sichuan Broth and we loved it!  Tick #3 - informed knowledgeable staff! The Fish Fragrant Eggplant was sublime and the beef noodle Chow Ho Fun was smokey and delicious.  The portions were very generous and the taste provided us with the best Sichuan experience we've had in Brisbane.  The place was packed and noisy but added to the festive atmosphere.  The table beside us noticed our nosh and asked us our opinions - likewise we loved the look of the duck that arrived at their table as well as the salt and pepper prawns on the service counter as we departed. Happy Boy left us a mighty happy pair and we'll become regulars.  Great value, impressive service and a fantastic taste bud tantalizer of a meal.  What a well oiled machine this old garage offers in Happy Boy. Can't wait for our next scheduled service!!!

4 of us had dinner here last Friday night. Vibe of the place is really nice, we were lucky enough to be seated at a table on its’ own around the corner from the main area. Everyone else was seated close beside each other in one small room and as others have mentioned, it is quite loud so being sat next to a large group would have been tough. Food – my main was the beef  brisket stew with noodle knots, it wasn’t Asian inspired at all which I had expected, so whilst I appreciated the tender beef, the dish was disappointing as it tasted like an average beef stock stew. I also had the gua bao which was pretty good, the duck fried rice was the highlight and the chongqing chicken was delicious although very spicy - they do warn this, but I think they could benefit from having a less-spicy version. Our friends had the deep fried version of Chongqing chicken (not on the menu) and didn’t like it as much as the stir fried one, and also had the chow ho fun but vegetarian as listed is available, and was disappointed to find the beef was just removed and no vegetables were substituted so it was noodles, onions and beansprouts. All up I enjoyed our night, but the menu is a bit hit & miss so if I come again I would make sure that I know what is in each dish.

Visited Happy Boy with a group of friends for a Wednesday night dinner and was generally quite impressed. The food is delicious and very generous portions for sharing. Quite a few vegetarian options for my vegetarian friends, and the right amount of spice for those that love chilli. <br/>I was a bit unhappy with the level of noise in the venue. It was busy but not flat out, however the size and shape of the room amplified all of the conversation until it became quite difficult to hear at the table. It also took quite a while for the food to arrive, but it's well worth the wait. <br/>I would definitely go again, but probably only with smaller groups so that it's easier to hear everyone.

Amazing food. Pricey but well worth the money! This place is always busy and I recommend going with a group of people to get heaps of shared meals.
Angie River
Very good food, very friendly staff and reasonably priced! We had the fish fragrant eggplant, fried chicken, beef brisket stew, beans with pork, and house fried rice. All very tasty!! Love the noodle knots in the stew especially! Our waitress was very kind too :)

Great food a little different to your usual Asian food. Great service and well priced. The renovated industrial space has great atmosphere.

Had a great first experience at Happy Boy, enjoying some of the best Asian food I've had in a while! The service and atmosphere were also top notch. Definitely recommend.

Always delicious, always pumping and always good service. Happy Boy is in such a cool spot and the young team do a really good job of keeping it relaxed but efficient service wise. Really great, simple wine list and authentic Chinese.

Went in with a group Friday lunch time. Initially there were a handful of others in the restaurant, we ordered and then it started to get busy. Our orders came in all over the place with some of us waiting 45 mins for spring rolls. It is hot with no ventilation - would not recommend in summer. And don't go when it's busy ... As they clearly cannot handle it.
Wn
Laid back vibe in a warehouse with surprisingly authentic Asian dishes. Noise level could be an issue if you were looking to have a nice conversation but otherwise soak up the fun and happy vibe whilst enjoying flavourful and recently priced food.
Helen Sheppard
Four of us visited Happy Boys last night and apart from the fact it was SO noisy conversation was almost impossible we found the attitude from the chef condescending, the food average and the servings a little on the small side. We ordered four dishes and rice. The first dish arrived after about 15 minutes, we then waited 10 minutes for the second dish. Another 10 minutes and out comes the rice on its own which we ate by itself. I asked the waiter that when our next dishes arrived we'd like another serving of rice at the same time, his reply, after checking with the kitchen was that he can't guarantee it would come with our dishes as the chef is very busy and it would arrive later. Our final 2 dishes arrived pretty much together almost 15 minutes later and finally the rice. Seriously, who wants to eat rice on its own at an Asian restaurant? If the kitchen is unable to cope with orders they should ditch the 'set' seating times and let people book for their preferred time which would stagger ordering times and help the kitchen cope. Will never return!
Pok
Negative! Food is very oily and losing balance, it is extremely salty. In terms of service, the second dish was served when we nearlyfinished the first one. Asked how come the second one took so long to prepare, and was told becausethey are meant to be shared blah blah blah … Ok … I can't see the logic ag all.

Authentic Chinese Experience - good food, poor service.<br/>We waited 60 minutes for out mains at a celebratory dinner at Happy Boy. As regular customers we are very disappointed. <br/>We also brought this to the staff's attention throughout the night and were continually told the meals were only 2 minutes away.<br/>Unfortunately we will not be returning.

This was a fabulous experience, I really appreciated the wine after a really really long drive (from Sydney). The food was very delicious and the ambience was buzzing, even for a Wednesday night! Would highly recommend.
Food Glorious Food
Happy boy = happy couple<br/>Menu is sufficiently Chinese and interesting. Bar/snack menu is appropriate. All the dishes from this list seems just perfect with beer or a crisp white wine. Dinner menu is small but again sufficient. <br/>We ordered Guo bao and the prawn coriander spring rolls. Guo bao is a sinful deep fried bun pork belly mini burger. Terribly unhealthy, but sumptuously delicious.<br/>Mains, red braised pork belly and fish fragrant eggplant. Pork belly braised to perfection. More pak choy would have been great. Fish fragrant eggplant isn't the best I've tasted but it is well cooked. Eggplant help its shape and texture with sufficient Tao Cheung paste. <br/>We went really early, at 5.30. Needless to say, we were the only diners. I can imagine the place becoming quite noisy even when it is half filled. Best to go with group of friends, bot exactly a family oriented restaurant. I can imagine a group enjoying themselves sharing meals. Parking could be an issue, unless of course one walks from one of the offices dotted close by. <br/>Service is swift and friendly and not overbearing.

If you like chilli it is for you! If not Run!

I have been here twice now and both times were enjoyable. Great Chinese food with a modern twist. The restaurant is a simple layout and can get quite noisy when busy. Service is quick, don't really like having to order a drink at the bar before being seated.

Had dinner at this place today..amazing food but extremely pushy service. In the hospitality industry your service is as important as quality of ur food. Very disappointed with the service today. We booked a table for 12-14 people for dinner at 5.45 pm. We were reminded almost 7 times that we have to leave before 8.00 which is understandable but reminding it again & again ruined the fun. We were constantly pushed to place the order so that the kitchen is not stressed during peak hours. Sorry I think kitchen should be well equipped with resources to manage peak hours. Secondly the manager/owner got so frustrated he gave us 1 min to place the order..I mean that's rude. If you are catering to big group please be patient otherwise say clear no...the worst of all he asked us to not come again if we can't abide by his time rules..everyone on the table was upset & disappointed. We were thr to celebrate something which was in fact ruined by very very rude wait staff...will never return again. Please go to this place if you just want to eat, but definitely try somewhr else if you have a big group or looking for decent dining experience or celebrating anything. Again my 2 stars are for food & food only.

Best Chinese I have ever tried. Went here while I was back in town and it exceeded all expectations. Can't fault it. Great food and the staff were really knowledgeable about the menu and wine to go with it. Strange taste chicken and the mapo tofu were like nothing I have tried elsewhere. Will definitely go back. Happy Boy made me a happy man.

Awesome food, service and location. 10/10<br/>Can't wait to go again                                                                                                         .

What a cool little hidden gem.<br/>Can't speak highly enough of the service and knowledgable staff who seemed to truly know and understand the menu not just say everything is delicious. Refreshingly the food was as good as the service, flavour some and priced reasonably.

Fantastic. Arrived early, just before opening. Tried all week to call to get a res but no one ever answers the phone. Found a spot, really friendly helpful service. Great advice on the food and awesome meal.

Diana. Actually enjoyed this tucked away little Happy spot. Good authentic Asian food with interesting selection of vegetarian. Shame the bean dish had the addition of minced pork though. My partner actually ordered this dish & I tasted the beans minus the pork- they were rich & tasty. The spring rolls came served in a glass & were crispy & light as spring rolls should be. The place was buzzing the night we went so I suggest booking well in advance

Exquisite. Happy Boy is an exquisite boutique restaurant. Its exciting menu successfully recreates Asian dishes that cannot be found elsewhere in Brisbane. Why endure the 10-hour plane ride to Asia when you can relive the culture and immense range of flavours at Happy Boy, in the heart of Spring Hill? Absolutely fantastic Chinese food - even amongst many good food experiences in China itself this place is a standout. Love the food, love the very literal menu translations and the staff are fantastic. Can't believe Brisbane has thrown up a place this damn good!
