Review Mitoki Japanese Modern Tapas - Brisbane

Patrick LAI
Thanks to COVID, we haven't been able to travel to Japan as we used to. As such, we have been hunting around for Japanese cuisine. It was by accident we stumbled upon Mitoki, we had a try-out of their lunch menu, and it was by their homemade sauce our hearts are moved. We've found our Ginza at Kangaroo Point. As much as I would love to say more, please allow me to withhold my comments here to let your imagination run free; give it a try, and you will be surprised. Hats off to the souls and hearts of Jason and Ryan.

We were here a couple days ago but forgot to share our wonderful experience. Everything here is on point and fresh, worth every single buck and bite! (Sorry for the poor photos as we were too excited with the food in front of us). Best Japanese restaurant in town!

I used to like this place a lot but unfortunately it had been very different from my visit today. I think the owner might have changed. The nigiri set is very different to what I had before, now they are thinly sliced. It used to be so good... Sad to say goodbye as this is probably my last visit.

What a great night. Celebrating my son's 26th Birthday. Staff were great the food was outstanding and the location of the restaurant was fantastic. Two thumbs up.

We ordered takeaway and the portion of food was really small... especially for the eel don. Even the rice is not enough for a girl. its a bit stingy when the price of food is not low. Not worth at all:(

This Japanese restaurant offers good value for money. I tried the sea urchin sushi and it was deluxe! The chirashi set is very fresh and quite large. It seems that one of the chef's working there now used to work at Hosokawa. I wasn't a big fan of the carpark underneath the restaurant however. It was a bit crammed and there was an unpleasant smell that I would get a whiff of inside the restaurant. Quality, service and location were all very positive. Would recommend this restaurant if you're looking authentic Japanese sashimi and sushi~

The food is delicious and worth for the money. The sashimi is fresh..love it so much

Simply the best meal we've had during my 10 days holiday here! We had Udon and curry rice in addition to others. The udon stands out as it's really authentic and have that simple umami taste. Another dish I highly recommend is the Takoyaki. We ordered it twice FYI so trust me on this! There's also the Prawn Tempura Avocado roll (8 pieces) which is so good that my wife called dibs on the last one! Ordering is done using an app on their iPad. Service is fast and friendly. Will definitely come here again if we're back here for holidays.

Hands down the best and most authentic Japanese food we’ve had in Australia. Incredible food, drink, service and ambience.

Update Aug 2020:<br/>Came for lunch to try their sushi and their chirashi! Very generous pieces and great quality of sashimi. Highly recommended !! <br/><br/><br/><br/><br/>Came on a Saturday night and the place was 3/4 full. The restaurant is a little bit hidden under the story bridge but wow was the sushi and sashimi fresh. Sashimi was nice cut with decent thick portions. The fish was fresh and tasted authentic. The hotate (my personal fav) was sweet to taste. The only complaint is the rice on the nigiris was falling apart everytime you pick up the nigiri. Other than that, one of the better sushi places I’ve tasted in brisbane. Nice little local hidden gem! Will be back to try their lunch chirashi!

Always on the hunt for good Japanese food around Brisbane, I had recently heard great things about Mitoki in Kangaroo Point. Frankly I had known of its existence for some time now, however I thought it was difficult to get to, so never ventured out there. Turns out that it was only a 5 minute ferry ride away from work, and I managed to get there faster than a stroll out to Fortitude Valley.

We had a fantastic dinner here last night. It is Japanese tapas so order as you go via an iPad. Most of the food was quick to arrive. The sushi took longer. The Renkon chips are lotus chips but cut thicker than any I’ve had elsewhere and we’re quite heavy. The eel was the highlight for me - tender and delicious. My only criticism is that there are no vegetable dishes. There is vegetable tempura which of course is deep fried. A vegetable stir fry dish and maybe some miso eggplant would be great additions to the menu.

Lovely restaurant to have lunch with some good friends, really enjoyed the food. The price is quite expensive but food is 👌🏻👌🏻👌🏻<br/><br/>I would definitely come here again for another visit for dinner.

Would definitely recommend two of the tuna carpaccios with a Sapporo alongside it and you can live the rest of your life and be able to say you did so without having regrets. Do yourself a favour and keep the maccas for another day it’s all Mitoki All the time. 5 stars

Enjoyed a very pleasant lunch there with friends. Bento boxes are excellent and reasonably priced. Quiet relaxing location in the heart of Kangaroo Point. Enjoy a walk to the Brisbane River at the end of the street after lunch. Staff friendly and very helpful. Will definitely go again. Parking underneath.

Went there for dinner last night for the first time. My girlfriend and I ordered grilled eels, beef with yuzu dressing, aburi plate and fried oyster. The food tasted ok but it's a tad overpriced for their tiny portion. We left half-hungry.  Would not go back for the second time as there are better japanese food out there which are priced reasonably.

First of all the service was brilliant. I was greeted by a happy young Japanese girl who asked me how my day was and explained the iPad ordering system to me. <br/>I ordered an array of tapas and sushimi dishes and was pleasantly surprised how quick they came out. The karrage chicken was freshly cooked and very tast. The gyoza were amazing and the kingfish sashimi was amazing. <br/><br/>I will happily recommend this restaurant to any of my friends and colleagues and will be returning in the future.

This place is near our house but unfortunately have only come twice as I was disappointed both times. The chicken came out dry, overcooked and oily and serving size was pretty small for the price. It’s a shame as they’re so close to us but quality wasn’t good both times.
Catdog
Went here for dinner, food was good and enjoyable. Ordering on the iPad is easy. Quite expensive, probably the price is the only reason I'd hesitate to go back.

Great place for a quick lunch. Ordering through an iPad was awesome & the waitress was very helpful also. I had the Bento with Salmon. Very good indeed!
Rebecca
A cute little Japanese restaurant where you order from a tablet. The food was a bit hit and miss with the spicy fried chicken being the standout of the night.<br/>
Sophia
Great location and vibe, fast friendly service. Awesome automated iPad order service. Food was fresh and quite tasty - although gyoza lacked flavour. A good experience - we will be back :)

Absolutely amazing. We went here tonight and it was the best decision we made. The service was efficient and the staff were friendly. The food was amazing! Definitely the best Japanese I've had. Will be returning again for sure!

Like the idea of using I-pad to place order. It saves labour and enhances privacy for patrons. They have some nice alcoholic drinks and I love the idea of ice flask to keep the drink cold. Like the invention of Fondue with Tempura. Although dishes have been modified for local taste buds, overall the outcomes are positive.

Amazing authentic Japanese food! Great service, atmosphere and open layout. Highly recommend the teriyaki salmon.

Overprice food and poor service. Good and expensive food. The boss need to employ more staff. Have to wait forever for food or water.

Amazing service and by far the best sushi I have had in brisbane. $10 for a katsu curry with a soft drink at lunch! Little gem of a place. Should be fully packed everyday.

Excellent. We only managed 11 courses, but every one was a gem. Great service, friendly staff. We'll return to start on the other things on the menu. Good value, and some of the best Japanese food I've ever had.
Clare
LOVE IT :D Just went here for the first time for dinner and dessert. Absolutely loved it! Attentive staff, nice ambience, good value, izakaya ordering system which I really like. Will definitely be back-often!!! ^_^

Absolutely the BEST Japanese restaurant in Brisbane. You will not find friendlier or better wait staff anyway. The food is always amazing! Love this place, never lets you down!

Tapas & Japanese!!. I enjoyed the dining experience from the door. The staff were friendly and welcoming and the service was great.<br/><br/>Two of my favourite ways of dining put into one Tapas & Japanese. <br/><br/>Loved the plum wine!<br/><br/>Highly recommended ......
Bridget
Shame - great place but needs a spring clean. I really like this Mitoki - great value and lovely food but I couldn't help thinking the place needed a good clean.<br/><br/>The floor tiles were so dirty and everything looked tired a tad dirty. Shame. I hope they lift their act.

Have not tried the food here, but with regards to the coffee forget it. I had a flat white which had a huge head & was so bitter I could not drink it & for the price of $3.90 was a bit of a waste! Evidently the food is supposed to be much better so I have been informed of late

Our favourite Japanese restaurant.. Always impressive! A regular that is consistently very good!!

When they let you use iPad to order your food, you would think that the establishment is advance and efficient. Nothin like that. When food did not arrive after u have placed your order for 40mins. It's not even the peak lunch hour and only three tables! I regretted coming here, and food is average. I can't see why I want to return or recommend to anyone!!!!
Rick
Really enjoyable a delicious meal. The ordering system using an iPad linked via wifi to the kitchen & bar is innovative and just awesome. <br/>Staff were efficient and friendly. Food was prompt and delicious. <br/>Will be back soon

Won't return. Living close by we have been meaning to try Mitioki for a long time. <br/>Maybe we just caught them on an off night as the other reviews on here are great - they were packed and maybe this was their issue<br/>Every item we ordered there was a problem.<br/>They ran out of glasses for the beer, the coke was flat (even after being sent back and supposedly replaced with a fresh bottle)<br/>They forgot our gyoza starters and these were actually the last item we received<br/>The Japanese curry came as literally sauce and rice, when I questioned there being no meat I was told it had "melted" <br/>The chicken we ordered was sold out and we were informed of this over 10 minus after we had ordered it.<br/>We were given 3 other peoples meals in the duration of our dinner. <br/>The night was a disaster from start to finish and completely over priced for what we got.<br/>The staff were lovely and were really trying and apologetic however they just couldn't cope with everyone in the restaurant.
Tia.
Love their Tapas menu! Very creative! The beef carpaccio is full of favor and texture , the beef is so tender as well. But I think they don't do good sashimi,it's not very fresh, if u are up for good sashimi , u probably can find much better sashimi elsewhere. One disappointing thing about their restaurant is that I couldn't find any dessert here! I always like to end my Japanese meal with some little sweet treat. Too bad :(
Mildred
Excellent little izakaya. So much better than some of the more trendy Japanese joints, lovely little izakaya, good service, good food albeit in a location that feels like the early 90s pickled in aspic

Two strikes!. Food here is not good at all and expensive! The sushi and sashimi comes out warm. We believe to give all restaurants a second chance after a bad experience. Two strikes. will not be going there again ever.

Delicious. I agree with the previous review. We celebrated Mother's Day in this awesome restaurant. Five of us had a wonderful time. The staff get top marks and the food, just delicious. The price was more than acceptable. We'll be back.
I Love Food
Fantastic!. I was really impressed with this cute Japanese restaurant. The staff, were incredibly friendly and helpful and the ambience was fantastic. Previous reviews say it was pricey, however I disagree.. The quality of the food and service is definitely worth the money! Definitely one of the best Japanese restaurants in Brisbane.

Novelty restaurant ordering off iPads. Quite expensive for what you get. Not overly worth it. Parking underneath is good.

Good and Bad. The setting is great, when you sit down it feels like 'this is cool'. Then you are presented with the menu which is an iPad. Fun! All is good ordering dish by dish, drink by drink great selection and dishes were delivered quickly. Stand outs were the Goyoza and the potato and gristle balls. All of the food was tasty but service became progressively worse as the restaurant filled. We waited over half an hour for 1 serve of steamed rice and 1 serve of avocado rolls at one stage. Go early is my suggestion.

The restaurant provided a friendly relaxed atmosphere. Very nice decor, spacious. The presentation was pretty cool too.I had a lot of fun here. Real Japanese-style lunch box and gorgeous tapas. I will definitely be back for seconds.

Interesting take on Japanese. Quite enjoyed dinner. A number of items are a bit of a unique way to present japanese ingredients in a way that is not too scary for non-japanese food eaters. Ipad menu makes ordering relatively simple, but also allows them to change available items on the menu daily. .. . No fresh tuna available for us unfortunately. Total price can add up very quickly .. . but you also have access to the running total at all times, so no excuses for going over budget.

Great / and correction. Presentation at Mitoki was beautiful - fresh flowers on table, gorgeous dishes, Japanese handkerchief napkins, the whole sake set. Attention to detail to small Japanese spices such as yuzu pepper and ponzu jelly were amazing. There aren't too many things in the menu but I enjoyed everything I ordered. Tempura cheese fondue was a bit much but an exciting experience..<br/><br/><br/>Just like to correct a few misunderstandings by previous reviewer Ty Parsons..<br/><br/>"Japanese Tapas, the tapas just added to market the restaurant a bit better, as there is no Spanish influence in the menu what-so-ever." - would you understand if they said it was "izakaya style"? Probably not.. "tapas" just means assortments of small dishes to share.<br/><br/>"Even the green tea, supposed to be fresh and clean, contained roasted rice attempting to add a sake taste to the tea. Instead it added an earthy, wheat texture and a pungent, thick smell." - green tea was genmaicha, which is brown rice tea. It is supposed to have rice in it - not "an attempt to add sake taste" .. it isn't supposed to be sake.<br/><br/>"Wagu Gristle beef croquettes, contained almost no beef and were mostly potato, topped with curly parsley and in both a barbeque and seafood sauce. Hardly Japanese at all." - croquettes are, from Wikipedia, "small breadcrumbed fried food roll containing, usually as main ingredients, mashed potatoes and/or ground meat". Known as korokke, they are very popular in Japan.<br/><br/>"sushi, grilled smoked salmon, with a distinct butane taste and scorch marks on the rice, evident that a torch or gas burner had been used to create the 'grilled' element, and leaving a bad taste in our mouths literally." - that is how seared salmon is made, burnt with a torch from the top of the sushi.

Great food and atmosphere. This place is fantastic. Whilst I dined alone during business travel, taking in the bread crumble oysters, sashim, and fish saikyo Yaki, I wonder how much enjoyable it would be with my wife. This is a truly romantic setting overlooking the palm trees at Kangaroo Point. The menu and ordering system from Mitoki's iPad is first class, quick and efficient. The staff here are a pleasure to interact with and this is a real winner. Give it a try....

A hidden gem!. Awesome gem of a restaurant. Bento boxes are not just great value, but a great mix of flavours and textures. A beautiful mix of traditional Japanese with a modern twist. Sashimi was fantastically fresh and lovingly prepared. Green tea ice cream was a fantastic finish to a lovely dining experience. Can't recommend highly enough and a place we love taking our friends to and watch their reaction to this great restaurant.

Wow. This place exceeded my expectations. The food was such good quality and so fresh, I was really impressed by the tapas selections. Kinda hard to find if you don't know it's there, but well worth navigating the roads in Brisbane. I also liked the innovative iPad menu and ordering system. I will definitely visit this place next time I visit Brisbane!
Elsa
Confused. I liked the fusion of japanese and tapas, but not always filling and delicious. And you would expect delicious whe you are paying near $200 for two and still hungry when leaving. But kudos to the idea and concept...

Great Drinks. I went to Mitoki with my husband and we went back with friends the next day!<br/>I would prefer ordering from staff not from iPad because the staff was so friendly and helpful. It was a bit pricey but their food was much better than Wagaya. <br/>What we loved about them is that they had good range of drinks. Unfortunately we drove so couldn't drink but we would love to go back to have more drinks! Lunch looked very good as well.

Nice experience. Tried Mitoki for the first time tonight. The service was excellent, helpful, friendly and polite.<br/>We shared tapas plates and a main, the food was great. We will definitely go back.

This place is right next to my house do I gave it a try. The iPad ordering system is nice but nothing new (wagaya has been doing it for much longer and better) The service was good but the standard of the food feels like ameture who are imitating pros. I've not had tamago that is salty with sushi before nor have I ever had such chewy rice in my sushi. I thought maybe it's how real Japanese food is done but certainly didn't have this feel when I was in Japan last year. The worst part was my ice green tea milk was actually warm.... The place would be ok if they didn't price themselves in the high end. With tapas that range from 8~14 dollars and main Nigiri at 32 dollars I expected much better.

East meets West. I was so excited to find this restaurant offering a modern take on traditional Japanese cuisine and wasn't disappointed. The staff were friendly and helpful and the food divine. When you enter the restaurant you're presented with an iPad that allows you to browse through the entire menu and then place your order without needing to wait for the staff to take your order. <br/>Due to the tapas-style, you're able to try a variety of different dishes ranging from sashimi and sushi to salads, rice and noodle dishes. There's also an interesting variety of desserts and sake (rice wine). If you're not sure about your sake, it's definitely worth ordering a tasting glass or two.

Mitoki was immediately impressive with its iPad menu and ordering system, more mobile than that at Wagaya. The cutlery, bowls and plates were beautiful – mimicking the river’s water-carved stones and pebbles.

We started with 3 plates of the grilled salmon sushi, our personal favourite. I love the stuff. Of course I had to get the gyoza, which to be honest wasn’t as nice as it could have been. The edge of the pastry was a bit dry or hard and the meat wasn’t amazing. This was followed by Octopus balls which hilariously J, who hadn’t tried Takoyaki before, decided to put all but the whole ball in her mouth… followed by her gagging and spitting it out with ‘there’s something in it!’
Taro Akimoto
Through their menu including food and drink, I can see their philosophy of trying to be different and I like that. Their dimmed lighting and decor with attention to detail along with quality traditional chinaware should appeal to customers looking for a quality personal experience.
