Review Himalayan Cafe - Brisbane

jonathan holdsworth
I highly recommend you book ahead and sit on the pillows out back. This place is pretty wild. The food isn't that cheap, the staff are a bit too on the ball and I had to run to bws but I WILL BE BACK. the food rocked, I have lunch for the next day and overall think the experience was one of the best Nepali/Tibetan dinners I've ever had. They even have dumplings lol. Recommend the goat dish.

After reading all the great reviews from this place I was hyped. The menu displays lots of vegan options. Sadly I was very disappointed with the food. The restaurant decor was cozy with dim lighting. I shared the Mixed vegan entree and it was terrible. I would say it is extremely overpriced for what you get. It was almost $30. The momos were dry, with a thick wrapping and minimal filling. The fried bread was super oily and the dipping sauces were sweet chilli sauce from a bottle and tomato chutney (this was good). The Tibetan pastry was quite good too. There was a salad on the plate which was just depressing. The potato salad tasted like steamed potato with no other flavour. All the components were lacking in flavour and they did not taste fresh. I am glad we ordered an entrée first and didn't waste our money on the mains.

As per usual, the Himalayan Cafe never fails to impress. It has the most delicious, entrees curries and a great range of dishes for vegetarians as well as meat eaters. The atmosphere is cosy warm and oh-so inviting. The prices are reasonable and the service excellent. Thank you!

My partner and I come back to this restaurant all the time and we love it more each time. There’s an awesome range of vegetarian options, all of which are really delicious. We order the Himalayan bread every time and I swear it’s my favourite entree on the planet. The newa tofu curry is something I won’t ever get tired of. The atmosphere is really chill and relaxing, the staff are generally nice, the service is timely and the prices are reasonable. There’s nothing I can fault. I’ll keep coming back.

Had a terrible customer experience here. Ordered the Himalayan bread the base of which came pretty burnt and blackish. The mixed entree was alright with the momo being too doughy. And the worst part of the night was we never got our main course. We waited and waited and after almost an hour (during which time they never once bothered to check on us), we asked where's our main course to be told it seemed to have mistakenly been served to another table! Staff didn't seem too apologetic about it and asked if we'd still like it, but with restaurant being quite empty by then and close to shutting down, we canceled, paid for the sub par entrees and walked out.

Omg I have always wanted to go here for years, and it didn't dissapoint. I had the basil chicken it was delicious. Also a chicken and dried rice dish for an entree that was fantastic. We had so much food left over we took home doggy bags. I will be back. Friendly service and cosy atmosphere.

The food and service was amazing as we try differenttypes of meats with rice. I absolutely recommended the place. Parking is so easy. Will definitely back.

Love this place. Friendly staff and fresh food. I would love to visit again…

For something a little different we decided to check out this place not really knowing what to expect. I got a lamb curry and the others got more fresher dishes. I think stick with the curries and you'll be fine, the other dishes are a bit mild and somewhat flavourless. But for a first timer, I'm willing to try the place again as they have an extensive menu that sounds really good.

We have been weekly regulars at this restaurant for most of this year. It is THE most consistent for exclent food and terrific service. Every dish is cooked to perfection and always using the freshest ingredients. We have tried most dishes now, but our top choices are: chilli bread with dipping sauce, the chicken stir-fry noodles, any of the curries, but especially the chicken ones, and the rice pudding dessert. If you haven't sat out the back, you haven't really dined here.

Himalayan Cafe has a very distinct TIbetan theme and vibe, complemented by incense fragrance inside of the restaurant. We ordered several dishes and the prices were a bit more expensive in my opinion. The meat and veggie dishes were quite decent with various spices in both of them. We also ordered the appetizer platter, dessert among other dishes, but one dish that struck me the most is the Himalayan bread. I could still remember how soft and chewy the bread was. The bread itself was light and came in big portion. It's also accompanied by dipping sauce. The service was quite fast, but the restaurant was really crowded and there wasn't enough space between the desks so we could not talk comfortably as our voices got drowned amidst the surrounding noises.

This place is a foodies institution. Always ask to go out the back !!- you wont be disaapointed- you will feel as tbough you are Nepal. We had the goat curry and chick pea with potatoes also the himalayan bread. Its hard to beat...u want something different..go out the back !!!
Emily
When we walked into this place, the restaurant smelt amazing and the decor was so lovely. Seating is very cosy and close but also an intimate space which I really liked. My friends and I ordered a vegan entree plate for starters and everything on it was delicious and tasty. We then received our mains and the flavours were really great too. The amount of time food came out was just perfect not too slow and not too quick. Was very satisfied with the meal and overall experience! The menu has so many vegan and gluten free options so I highly recommend it if these are things you are looking for in a restaurant. Would definitely go back with a bigger group just so I can try more food!

Last night I decided to have dinner in himalayan cafe. Been curious about the high rating. A staf warmly welcomed me. Since I came alone, I decided to have himalayan bread and thukpa. Himalayan bread was tasty and so was the thukpa. However, I felt the foods were overpriced. They came in a large portion, however, I still feel they are pricey. Himalayan bread was made fresh and had such a nice texture. Both dishes was seasoned lightly. <br/>The restaurant was nicely decorated with lots of himalayan decoration and stuffs. However, I would prefer if they put more lightning. This is my personal opinion, tho.
John Lau
Cosy decor, flavourful dishes with beautifully matched spices and tender meat. Very busy during dinner but well worth the wait and reasonable prices for the area. I’ll definitely be heading back.

This is my favourite restaurant in Brisbane! The food is consistently delicious & never disappoints. The service & atmosphere is amazing. Love this place 😊

Very cool spot, loved the ambience and decor. Friendly waitstaff. Food is very good and very interesting, very varied as well. Will definitely be visiting again

Favourite restaurant in Brissie. Beautiful chilled atmosphere, delicious curries, Tibetan bread and momos. Sit out the back if you get the chance!

The Himalayan is my go-to girls catch up spot. BYO? Check. Vegetarian/GF/DF options? Check. Dim lighting so you can rock up sans-makeup? Check. Damn delicious? DOUBLE CHECK. While I feel like we’ve tried every dish on the menu, we keep going back for the Himalayan Bread to start, followed by Mixed Entrées and a variety of mains which always include Sherpa Chicken. Sometimes our girl gang can get a bit rowdy after a few bottles of wine but the staff here are always lovely and accommodating - we usually book one of the two long outside tables so as to not annoy anyone. Our tip - if you forget your booze, don’t worry, there’s a bottle shop just a few stores down. And try to book ahead of time, this place is consistently packed!

Fantastic place. Wonderful atmosphere, great service and very tasty food. It's a cosy but not cramped restaurant with a lot of heart. My second visit and there will absolutely be a third or more.
Sophie Hodgson
Great atmosphere, and the staff were very helpful despite our large and often loud group!<br/>We passed so many dishes around I'm not sure which was which in the end but all the dishes were full of flavour and depth. Definitely need to go back soon.
Marty Fay
Only went here for the first time this month, mid week and full is always a good sign. The food was great, the service perfect for casual dining and solid menu - this really is one of those perfect 'catch-up' dinner spots with big tables or a simple night out. The atmosphere is great with traditional decor. I highly recommend <br/><br/>* great vegetarian options also
LindaC
Went with a group for vegetarian buffet. Entrees were OK. Mains very disappointing. <br/>Food bland and mushy with no textures. Even the rice was gluggy. Positives - it was cheap.<br/><br/>
Cameron Tomlinson
Very frustrating this couldn't be address privately as there is no email address or even Facebook inbox to write too. Have been a fan of this place for years however it's absolutely appalling to order takeaway and find a strand of sharp metal in the rice. Had this not been seen when serving it easily could have been ingested and caused some serious health concerns. Sad that this restaurant leaves no avenue for the matter to be addressed.
Aleks Trajkovska
Food is average, not much flavour. It's a bit of a novelty place in my opinion. We came across one curry dish, from the 6 dishes we ordered, that was nice, everything else lacked flavour. Asked for a spicy dish, but had no spice in sight. <br/>The bread was actually the only good part of the meal. Service is okay, not as friendly as expected, speed was average, price is low though and its BYO.

I have been here so many times since I moved to Brisbane 15 years ago. It never disappoints! I took my fiancé for the first time last night. You must start with the homemade bread (pesto is my fave) and dipping sauce. Order starters, because you can pack up any leftovers to take home. My fave mains are #33 Lamb Fhaiya Deakau and #38 Prawn Lawsoon Haleko Bhunjnya. Also, try the potato salad. So yum!!
Andrew Leigh
Incredible food. Charming atmosphere. A perfect place to have a banquet style gathering and share the ample portions of food. <br/><br/>If you're vegetarian, they offer a fantastic variety of suitable options. If you're not, be daring and try the goat.
Anna Morris
"Lawsoon haleko bhujinya"<br/><br/>(#38: prawns with garlic, capsicum, onion, cream, coconut milk, fresh coriander and other herbs) <br/><br/>A mouth watering, must-eat dish!!!
Matt
Haven't visited for many a few years, not the same vibe or atmosphere that I remember. Service was pleasant enough and food arrived quickly although it lacked flavour and although a common complaint it is a noisy room. Having returned I can say it will be a few more years before I return again.
Alison Batten
We phoned in advance to book a table and to be certain that the restaurant did cater for vegetarians. We ordered six dishes between five people, and every dish was a huge disappointment. The food was insipid, watery, and boring, and obviously prepared in a half-hearted manner.  If you do not have respect for vegetarian food you need to remove it from your menu. The entire experience was a waste of our time and money.
Alice Nicholas
I loved this place although it was a little more expensive than we expected. We did not book and they were able to squeeze us in... So You should book. Himalayan bread is delicious and surprisingly sweet. Great vegetable and meat options. And byo drinks is a winner!
Nabila
Decided to try tibetan food so I came to this place. It was my first time to try it. I ordered himalayan bread and garlic bread. The himalayan bread was so delicious! I would give them 5/5! But the garlic one was just ok.<br/><br/>I also love the ambience here. It was so peaceful. Would love to try the main foods next time!
L P
This place is great, but it was quite busy and noisy. Good value, beautiful friendly service and amazing food. I would recommend the banquet or a few different plates to share as there are many things to try.
Hungrygirl
As you walk in you will be greeted with a smile from the warm staff. The interior of this place gives off a very homey and relaxed feel and I love the area out the back where you can sit at the raised tables. The service here is really good, they will make sure you are taken care of and the food here is consistently good, I've only ever had one dish I didn't really enjoy. This place has been one of my regular favourites for years and advise you give it a try. I highly recommend the shimpu kwa, it's delicious!
Cobo
We are regulars at this restaurant, and it rarely fails to disappoint! The ambience is amazing and peaceful (especially on weekdays but on weekends it does get busy)..the food is rich in flavour - the meat dishes are always tender. And to top it off the Himalayan Tea is just majestic....
Indi Farquharson
I love this restaurant. I absolutely love the chilli bread, I could eat 10 every time! So tasty! I did have a meal which was literally just steamed veg once, but avoiding that dish all is delicious. The atmosphere is great, the area out the back is beautiful. It's always packed, Definitely want to book in. This restaurant is a must do!

This was our first time trying Tibetan cuisine. The atmosphere of the cafe is great and the food came out very quickly even though they were busy. We did find the meat in our entree quite dry and though the mains were tasty enough they didn't wow us. The Himalayan bread was fluffy and sweet. If I lived locally I'd consider going back for a mid-week meal but probably won't go out of my way to dine here again.

Decided to be a bit adventureous and try something I've never tried. So left the picking of the restaurant up to fat noodle (My dining companion). After driving past the Himalayan Cafe and seeing how busy they were, we decided to give it a try. <br/><br/>It was definitely very busy considering it was 9pm on a Saturday night. There was 1 free table in the corner of the store, and thats where we planted our asses. The waitress brought us our menus and advised me to move my car off the night owl lot and onto the street. <br/><br/>We placed our order which consisted of a beef salad, a goat curry and a Himalayan bread with dip. For drinks we ordered a banana smoothie and an orange juice. <br/><br/>The wait was quite long. I had time to go move my car and have a cigarette. The banana smoothie was brought out and it was absolutely amazing. I hate bananas, always have, always will. But this smoothie went down quite easy. The banana taste wasn't over powering, it had a nice yogurt flavour to it and it was quite thick. The orange juice was nothing special. <br/><br/>Next came the bread and dip. The bread was by far one of the best breads I've tasted. Very soft and doughy, it went perfectly with the mint yogurt dipping sauce it came with. <br/><br/>After the lovely bread, I started to perk up. Hoping the rest of our food were going to be fantastic. My salad came out followed by the curry and rice. The presentation was ok. Nothing to spectacular. Salad consisted of lettuce, carrot, capsicum, cucumber, beef cubes and other bits of leaves I wasnt able to identify in the dimly lit restaurant. The salad was quite disappointing. The carrots were all cut up into different sizes, the cucumber wasnt peeled properly in some areas, the lettuce tasted like 3 day old lettuce and the beef. God the beef was over cooked, super chewy and lacking flavour. The dressing was average but the dish as a whole, was a disappointment.<br/><br/>After seeing my disappointed face, fat noodle started ranting and raving about how awesome his curry was. Maybe it was to save face? We all know how men like to stand up for what they believe in. I had a bit of the curry. The meat was very well cooked. It fell to pieces in your mouth but the sauce was nothing special. Tasted like a whole lot of herbs and spices but lacking the kick you'd expect with curries. <br/><br/>All in all. It was a disappointing experience. I would probably visit again but only for the bread and smoothie :).<br/><br/>Total spent between 2 people: $60

I have been coming to Himalayan Cafe for years, the food is always delicious, another point is that dishes have been consistently top notch. Even when busy, food seems to come out fast. Dining in the large front room can be quite noisy which is the only drawback, however it's not enough to keep me away.
Laura Wight
Food was sensational! Atmosphere was so relaxing. Loved the decor. They even let us take the leftovers home for the next day. Second time here at this restaurant and would happily come back.
Tastytreat
6 or 7 times here, mountain bread & silken tofu are the best.<br/>I'm not a vego but a lot of my mates are. Love having a meat free adventure.<br/>.. I want the sherpa goat curry though.<br/>It might have to be a solo mission though
Ranga With An Appetite
I always drive past this place and never understood why it's so busy. One time I had to try as it's so busy, the bread was to die for but unfortunately the curries we ordered were both very average (maybe that's just Himalayan cuisine but I doubt it). A customer at another table said they got the wrong order and then the waitress had to get the manager ((think owner) and he was very rude. I don't have time for that at all, I wouldn't support this business and I don't see any reason for others to go there either.
Jmocha
This place was not for my stomach and the food was really incipit.  I visited this place for the experience of trying something different and I was with a vegan that insisted on trying this place. The prices do not justify or deliver on quality or taste.  The non-vegetarian meat curry does not include any rice or any side, as that cost extra.  The only positive aspect would be the ambiance and location.
Betty & Jason
Expensive. Curry was watered down and flavourless. The platter was dry meat cut up with strange unconnected side dishes put together. While the restaurant is beautiful and the staff are friendly, the food is just mediocre and not worth the price. There are better places for Himalayan food! (like tibetan kitchen)
Kirra
Large portions with most items on the menu being around $16.95 and a very lovely place that was very comfortable and calming. The service was efficient and the food was delicious and served fast.

Walked pass this cafe while I was heading to dine in The Indian Cafe. It reminds me the episode that I had my meal there last time. Indeed, the Himalayan Cafe draws my memories of having dinner at Tibetan Kitchen of West End. I like this cafe more because I felt warmer and love the deco of strong Nepalese feeling. Service was friendly and food was tasteful (sorry, I could not give you much of culinary comment because I am not familiar with this type of cuisine). General speaking, I would not mind to visit this cafe again.
ABC Eater
nice decor, but food was a let down. The meat dumplings were bland, I would recommend a sauce with it guys! We ordered the goat curry and another prawn one, we left uninspired. I would recommend a better depth of flavours (could probably be corrected by reducing the sauce more). The apple pie was most disappointing. It read well on the menu and looked amazing when it came out. but again, the flavours were very bland. Sorry but we wont be back.
Tutu
Super cute decor, great ambience, nice staff..Only down side is the food was a bit of a disappointment - nowhere near as flavoursome as I was expecting. And the lamb we had was way too dry.. Don't think I'll be coming back here.

Backhanded Review.. I want to write a positive review for this place, because the atmosphere and the vibe of the place are awesome and the staff at this place were helpful and friendly.<br/>Having said that, I had the most disappointing meal I have probably ever tasted in a long time.<br/>It was a veggie tofu dish, so bland that it tasted like something had been forgotten from the recipie... honestly I am wondering if there was some kind of mistake... because it tasted ALL WRONG. The Tofu was extra awful!<br/><br/>I have eaten at this restaurant several years prior and I remember it being yummy then.. but maybe that was just the meat dishes?? <br/>I only write this review in the hope that someone makes some changes to the vegetarian options.. more flavour people!! <br/><br/>all the best.
Hannah
Absolutely love love love it here! Could not recommend enough
Herbie
Obviously very popular, but not for me. This place is packed out, but it wasn't too my taste. The beef dish I ordered came in sauce that was kind of watery. The rice wasn't basmati but tasted like some cheap Uncle Ben's or something similar. Overall I found the flavours of the dishes too mild and lacking in punch. My wife seemed to like this place but I wouldn't choose to go back. In fact it kind of reminded me of cheap eats in Nepal - as in what you get served in a hut halfway up a Himalayan mountain. <br/><br/>On the plus side is the decor and atmosphere, and the staff were friendly and efficient. We also didn't have to wait too long for the food.

Great Karma. Have been to Himalayan Café a number of times over many years. Food is simply fantastic as is the service. In a highly competitive environment in New Farm/Fortitude Valley precinct this restaurant has remained popular and consistent for a very long time. The main man Karma is awesome at the front of this restaurant and very welcoming.

10/10. This place ticks every box for me. Nice staff, cool atmosphere and great food. This place is great for vegetarians like myself, the bean curry was amazing. Will definitely be making regular visits to this place. Yum!

Love Love Love. Everything about this restaurant warms my heart. The food, the ambiance, the burning incense, the music & the Nepalese staff. <br/>If you want an authentic Himalayan experience, or just a relaxing night out of the rat race then this is the place to come. <br/>Thank you Himalayan Cafe, you are wonderful.
JdFortune
Average service, bland food. Cute atmosphere, however the food didn't blow my socks off - quite bland.

Brisbane Diner. I have visited Himalayan Café at least dozen times. Each time, although trying different dishes on the menu, the food has been very tasty, in fact a delight. The service has always been cheerful, quite reasonable time-wise despite a large number of diners, and efficient. I will always return. Thank you Himalayan!

Food is totally delish. I tried this restaurant for the first time last week. We had a table in the front part of the restaurant. I've read that some people don't like it there and I'm sure it isn't as tranquil as the seats in the back rooms, but it's really fine. Like any other normal restaurant. I didn't feel as though I was too close to other patrons or as though they were staring at me? <br/>The service was really friendly and attentive. The prices weren't amazing, but reasonable.<br/>The food was SO GOOD. SO GOOD. I wish I was back there right now, eating that food. We had the meat dumplings, the himalayan bread, the goat curry and a chicken curry. We could barely make it halfway through the mains because the portion sizes were so generous. Luckily they have the option to takeaway.<br/>The food took quite a while to came out, which wasn't great, but the combination of the atmosphere, reasonable prices, friendly service and yummy food will see us coming back here many more times.

Full of authentic goodness.. I love this little cafe. It has a genuine feel and a menu of authentic, subtle and delicious choices. The bread is, I kid you not, the BEST bread I have ever had and the lamb curry was to-die-for.<br/>I will be back for a third taste.<br/>Advice: Book ahead, they almost always fill up.
Isabel
I don't like to give negative reviews but I was disappointed this time. My best dish was the pesto bread. The rest of the food was ok but a bit bland except for one of the dishes that was too spicy. I went to the Himalayan cafe many times in the past and it was always yummy food!!
Britt.white3
High hopes were not met. After having a very great meal here approximately 2 years ago and I was excited to go back. Needless to say, I was extremely disappointed with my meal. The food was exceptionally bland and overpriced for the quality. I could not taste the difference between the two chicken dishes (sherpa and pesto). Unfortunately, I would not recommend this restaurant anymore.
Jessmerritt72
An old favourite. My main attraction to this place is not the perfectly decent food and service, but the ambience and calmness you feel dining here. Not, i should mention, out the front in the feeding pens, but out the back, at low tables surrounded by cushions and filled with cloth, hangings and incense, while relaxing music plays in the background. This is probably the best place to chill out in New Farm, but it is extremely annoying when the other tables are all booked, as there is very little privacy, and you are all staring at each other!
Searle.rosalind
Gone downhill. This place has been a landmark for years, but when we had dinner there last week, we found it had sadly gone downhill in terms of taste and quality. The service has always been a bit average, and in a way, that was part of its charm - the food used to be so good, you'd laugh about how bad the service was as you tucked into the delicious dishes that would arrive (eventually) in front of you. Not anymore. My tofu dish firstly came out as the other tofu dish on the menu and when I pointed this out, I had to argue with three different wait staff until they agreed to replace it with the actual dish I had ordered. What they actually did was scrape the topping off and replace it with the topping of the actual dish I ordered. On top of this, the dish was watery and flavourless. My husband's beef stir- fry was dry and unappealing also. Good bye Himalayan Cafe.
Rebeccasmyth_
Beautiful food. The food has always been delicious when I've been there, although some of the vegan options all start to taste the same, and some of the vegan options are overpriced for what they are. <br/><br/>It's a great venue for group meals as the restaurant accommodates meat eaters, vegetarians, vegans, and people with gluten free needs. <br/><br/>Out the back is cozy and beautiful, but the main area can get very loud and noisy, so probably not the best venue for a first date or intimate dinner.
Karen
Went for dinner and the Vegetarian entree sampler was very tasty. We also shared two mains - the organic tofu & the first main vegetarian with a few elements (can't recall the name) - and they were both delicious. The cafe has a good atmosphere too. Will go again!
Ashwina Gotame
Overrated. Very ordinary food - not cheap - diners must be paying for the decor

Great rustic authentic food, feels like your by Everest. The bread is unbelievable..

Disappointing second visit. Had previously loved this place but a bad recent experience has turned me off. Got there at 7pm and ordered not too long after. Our food order got lost so it took ages to even get entrees. The place was packed so the atmosphere was hot, noisy and claustrophobic. Two of the three mains we ordered were bland with little flavour or heat. The only good thing was the friendly staff. Sorry but won't be back.

Best Restaurant in Brisbane. I literally created an urban spoon account purely so i could write a review for this restaurant, as the negative comments below are such rubbish and i dont want to deny anyone the pleasure of trying this place. I have probably been to this restaurant around 20 times over the past 4 years, and every time has been as good as the last. I have spent every birthday here and they have always been very accomodating for my large number of guests and copious amounts of BYO booze. They are constantly fully booked, so no last minute drop in's for dinner here on a fri/sat night - you want to book early in the week, or for large bookings - a few weeks before . <br/><br/>The Nepaya Khayala (not sure of spelling) is a tomato based chicken curry and without a doubt my favourite meal of all time ever (i think it is # 32 or #39 on the menu). It is the most delicious and succulent curry ever, and even though the poritons are huge i always gorge and eat the whole thing, and i dont know a single person who has tried it and not liked it. I have also tried many of the currys, beef/lamb/goat and never been dissapointed - but Nepaya khayala is the one! <br/><br/>The Himalayan bread with mint dipping sauce is amazing - light, fluffy, delcicious bread to keep you going until your mains arrive.<br/><br/>Cannot fault this place at all. <br/><br/>Do yourself a favour and try it out!
AdmCan
Good ambience but food was extremely bland and overpriced for what it was!!
Katrina Anson
Awsome dinner tonight! Booled this morning bit still fit us in even tho they were very busy! Quick service and delicious food! Make sure u get the himalayan bread! Delish :)
David Ryan
Wavering. It's hard to make a negative review, but Himalayan Cafe is slipping as the bar raises around it. As prices have crept up, the service and quality has not, and the New Farm catchphrase of "pop down to the Himalayan?" has faded out like the flavours in most of the mains. Not bad, but not quite good. A slice of the suburb's great cultural mix of restaurants, but one that needs to smile more, engage the customers, and try a little bit harder.
Lucy Daisy
Terrible service. Mediocre food. <br/>We waited over an hour for very dull stir fry and then got billed the entire amount with no apologies. Very, very disappointing and we won't be going back.
Avid_eater
I love this place... cannot go past the Sherpa, its fab!
Phillas
Exciting turns to disappointing.<br/>Foods are too blend. especially momo dumbling is too dry.
Rob
Such great food. Such a great restaurant but i will advise customers to be adventurous with the menu i like an idiot thought i wouldn't really like Himalayan food so i ordered something very plain and basic on the menu what a mistake the people i were with ordered aromatic and spicy dishes which i assumed were going to packed with chilli and was going to be hot like strong Indian curry but it wasn't at all this food has a whole different flavor to Indian food don't make the mistake i made by thinking just because the two countries share a boarder there food is going to be the same thankfully my friends let me taste there dishes and the food was spectacular the plain chicken dish i had was nice too don't get me wrong it was just very plain the ambiance in the restaurant is wonderful the prayer flags and bells that greet you under the awning make you feel transported to Nepal the price was right on par too great food at a decent price book a table when we went it was packed full of people this restaurant is special and i would suggest to any one who is sick of Chinese Indian and sushi to give it a real go

Omg! If you like chicken try the Pesto Chicken! Amazing dish that would never get tiring!
For The Love Of Food
Try to book the back room if you want to hear each other speak and don't want to feel like a sardine - the back room area is like a sanctuary and very cool and funky!!! The meals are filling and the food is nice - healthy and simple food - something different to the usual!!!
Lauren
Didn't make a reservation but they just squeezed us in! So happy! Loved the food! Can't wait to go back

I was sceptical when I went there, but I rather enjoyed my meal there!!

Great service and yummy food, very casual and always buzzing. Highly recommend the Sherpa Chicken!

Amazing. I think I've been here at least 50 times!<br/>The food is delicious and the service is great too!<br/>Don't miss it!

Great food with good service to match. The food came out very fast and was absolutely delicious. The only downer was that it was very noisy and is quite difficult to have a conversation. I will definitely be back :-)

Not overly impressed. Had a booking for 8pm for two, staff couldn't find the booking so as the first to arrive I was put at a table in the very noisy front room. Other than a bottle of tepid water plonked on the table when I sat down no staff came near me while I waited for my brother to arrive (he was nearly 25 mins late). On arriving he pointed out to the staff that he had made the booking in one of the cushioned booths out the back, and we were duly placed there. Fifteen minutes later he had to go find someone to take our order. Food was ok, and we didn't have to wait long for it once we'd arranged for someone to take our order...Along with our meals we'd ordered non-alcoholic drinks - they just didn't eventuate, and we couldn't be bothered finding another staff member to find the drinks. Went to the counter to pay (by this point we were pretty sure we could've walked out without paying and they probably wouldn't have noticed us then, either) and had to stop them from charging us for the drinks that we hadn't been given. Overall, not a pleasant evening. It's probably great if you're young and enjoy a noisy, incense-laden atmosphere (in the front room), but if you're getting old and grumpy like me you may not have the patience for all the ambience-creating paraphernalia or having to sit cross-legged at a low table out the back in order to get a meal in peace.

AMAZING!. Whenever we have friends and family visiting Brisbane we always take them to the Himalayan Cafe as it is a wonderful experience. It is noisy and bustling, you will get knocked as you eat by people walking past and it is hard to get service, but that is all part of the experience.<br/><br/>The food is AMAZING and it is priced really well - it is always a treat whenever we go there and we look forward to the next time.

Love this place... But it is vital to book early and get a table out the back.. The front is packed and noisy.. The back is coffee tables, cushions, atmospheric and relaxed .. Love the bread with the dipping sauce and the goat... Have been here over 40 times.. Great for romantic dinners as well as for small group catch ups .. The atmosphere is so relaxed you will easily lose hours chatting and eating.. Remember to wear shoes that are easily removed before getting onto the cushions..

Yak meat is all the rage!. Went with partner and friends to this restaurant a few weeks ago on a Saturday night. Relied on Urbanspoon for something different.<br/>Again the rating and comments were spot on. Great atmosphere.<br/>Highly recommend you getting a booking inside at the back where you sit on the cushions on the floor.<br/>Also book early!<br/>No Yak but the Goat is very tasty.

Really enjoyed the experience and will certainly go back. The restaurant has great service, atmosphere and the food was excellent and very reasonably priced. We were there on a very busy Saturday night which probably contributed to the atmosphere.

Best on Brunswick. New Farm has some great restaurants, but the best of the best is, in my opinion, the Himalayan Cafe. I can only endorse what many other reviewers have written about this charming BYO establishment. The food is wonderfully fresh and authentic, the prices reasonable and the Buddhist ambience quite unique (at least in this part of the world). It is ALWAYS full of happy customers, so make sure you book, and if you want a cozy conversation as well as delicious food, ask for a table in the back room, away from the cacophony of the main part of the restaurant. We had a celebratory dinner there last night, and the three of us enjoyed the wonderfully light and addictive bread and dipping sauce, a large platter of mixed meat entrees, the most flavoursome Sherpa chicken, exquisitely prepared garlic prawns, jasmin rice cooked to perfection, and to finish off a perfect meal, a selection of icecream confections made on the premises. The Himalayan Ginger Bliss icecream is truly out of this world - that alone would keep me coming back to this culinary Nirvana. For a special night out, you can't do better than the Himalayan Cafe. Go there ASAP - but remember to book in advance!

Impressed!. Really good, much better this time than previous times I've been (a few years ago). The Himalayan bread with dipping sauce was amazing! A bit weird that all the meals except the vegetarian ones come with free rice, but my tofu and mixed veg meal was incredible anyhow.

Would definitely go back!. I went to the Himalayan Cafe a few weeks ago with a friend and had never been before or tried Himalayan food. I was very impressed! Whilst the food seemed familiar (reminded me of Indian cuisine) there was something different about it and it was very tasty. We had the himalayan bread to start off with, and then had a butter chicken type dish with rice. My friend then had the chocolate brownie & I had the apple pie. Again both seemed familiar but had a twist to them. My only criticism is that it took awhile for them to come and take our dessert order and then serve the dessert, but the restaurant was close to full ! Looking forward to my next visit.

Amazing lamb curry, meat cooked to absolute perfection.

Great ambiance. I went there a couple of times and have never been dispointted, the food is excellent, good choice for a dinner with friends. It is always packed and quite noisy but it doesnt realky create discomfort like other noisy places. I love it and recommend fir laid back dinner with friends.

Bloody awesome!. This place is a must do. The food is excellent, as is the decor and atmosphere. Very busy so book early. Loved it and will be going back.

Busy, Noisy and Delicious. Smokey with incense and lit with candles, we found our way through a rabbit warren of small rooms to our assigned room at the back. Seating was difficult, especially for the tall men in our group, as you needed to fold yourself up and sit on cushions on raised platforms. The only people at our table who could sit down were those of us who sat on the far side of the table and could lean against the wall for support. However, sitting issue aside, the food was fantastic. Several members of our group opted for the meat banquet and more than sufficient amounts and varieties were served. The bread and tofu (made on site) were fluffy and fresh. The dipping sauces were awesome, bursting with fresh herbs. The busy little waitress had to be prompted several times for the tea and coffee that came as part of the banquet, but it wasn't really a problem. Will definitely return for the food. Slight problem at payment - could not work out why, after every one had put their money in for the meal to enable us to do the "one bill per table" as commanded, we were still short $20. Turns out they charge $2 corkage per person, despite the fact not everyone at the table was drinking. I guess if one person turns up with wine then everyone pays. Minor issue, just something to be aware of.

Excellent value for money. Decided to see what the fuss was about and can say that had an extremely enjoyable experience. We explored the menu and saw an array of different foods and all seemed quite interesting. After 3 enjoyable courses and an a great atmosphere got the bill and was quite surprised at the cost. We both thought it was great value for money, excellent food and cannot wait to get back there.

Nepalese food. Had the best food and ambience experience, May 19th. I will be back there every time I'm in Brisbane. Loud, yes. Love it, yes. Busy, yes. Book a table in advance, very yes. Enjoy!

Wonderful. Great vegetarian options, always busy and fast service as well. It's a favourite for me!

Something a bit different. Wanting to try something new, we headed here for dinner the other night and it did not disappoint!! We were given a table in the back room. It was the atmospheric little area where you climbed up and sat on cushions and were given a chance to eat and relax in the privacy of your own himalayan oasis. The decor and music was great, the menu is so accommodating with plenty of food for both meat eaters and vegans. The tofu dish I had was amazing, the tofu was like eating silk. The lamb was also a winner, just peeling away was you stuck your fork into it. BYO went down a treat. Only thing I would have to say as we were in our own little world, we got slightly neglected towards the end and had to go find the waitress at one point. Service was lovely otherwise. Not your normal dining experience, would definitely go back!

Can't wait to go back. I had hardly heard anything about Nepalese/Himalayan food before a friend recommended this place and now I cannot wait to go back. Five of us ventured to the Himalayas for the night and were definitely pleased with what we found. We ordered the following:<br/>2 breads, one Himalayan and one pesto<br/>Pesto Chicken<br/>Another chicken dish not unlike butter chicken - only much better<br/>Lamb dish<br/>Tofu dish<br/>Potato salad<br/><br/>Every single menu item we ordered was perfect. High quality meats had been used and the sauces all had such unique but delightful flavours.<br/><br/>The service was great without being overbearing and the food came out exceptionally fast. This is a great alternative to Indian or other Asian foods, only better in my opinion.
Shayne Herriott
Nice food and atmosphere, little expensive. The food was awesome and it was a nice alternative to indian or thai. The prices were a little bit more than other places for curries, but for the money you got much better quality food.

Love!. Have been here a few times & every time I love it more & more. Great food, reasonable price & it's always busy which is always a good sign! One of my favourite places for a decent priced dinner!

It's OK. Read so much good review about this restaurant, slightly disappointed about it. Went in with my sister and it place was packed. Decided to order take away instead as there were no available seat inside and it was torrential downpour outside. Great vibe, then we witnessed one of the lady (assuming supervisor/owner) yelling at one of her staff. We couldn't understand what they were saying, but it is not acceptable to talk to one of your staff member like this. I probably won't come back to this place as the food was average and does not really go with my palate. Kudos for those who enjoy the food tho.

The food here is consistantly mind blowing! Love this place!

Just thinking about Sherpa Chicken makes my mouth water. Definitely the best item on the menu.

Great food, great service, and it's BYO. Also very affordable! Awesome night out.

Enlightening, sensual and yummy. This is one of my favourite places: it may not have finesse but the atmosphere of the back rooms and the homely deliciousness of the meals is incredibly satisfying. The dishes are simple however, and not for those expecting something fancy or strongly flavoured. I would only complain about the cold, not very friendly service. Otherwise, I just love eating here with crossed legs at a long, low table under the mood lighting. I particularly like the goat, coconut chicken, pesto chicken, the curries and vegetarian dishes. The dining experience here delights all my senses at a very reasonable price.

Prawns in the mountains?. Been to this place numerous times. Great generous tasty food. The prawn curry or whatever it is, is soooo tasty. Even if it's probably not faithful to the scraps they probably have to eat in the mountains. Had the banquet here last time and granted the curries were all very similar, but they were all good so I can't complain.

One of my favorite restaurants in New Farm! Great atmosphere, BYO and fantastic food. Highly recommend!!
Laura
Great Atmosphere and Yummy Food. What a busy little place! Great atmosphere and I really enjoyed the food. Will definitely be bringing friends here...

Great exterior, however that is the only good thing about this restaurant. Seats are way too tightly packed in, it gets really noisy, very slow service (attentive though), really strong smell of incense, gets very cold in winter, but worst of all, food is all terrible. I don't know if they're the "real" Himalayan food, but by Australian standards they are not good enough to serve to customers for money.
Esther
Very disappointing. After reading the great reviews we went as a party of six expecting great things. With the exception of the Himalayan Bread, everything we ordered was watery, tasteless and bland. The stirfried veg appeared steamed and favourless, the tofu was in enormous chunks with no flavour other than too much chilli, the chicken sauce tasted like it came out of a cheap jar and the soup was a tasteless watery mass of sad looking veg. We won't be returning, maybe there was a dud chef on that night, but we won't be risking paying for the disappointment again.

If your feeling adventurous try the curried goat its a winner good atmosphere friendly staff ...

Great place for dinner with friends. We usually get the banquet menu and the food is always great. It's BYO which makes the night more affordable. Iif you can get a seat out the back then I think its better than being at the from as it can get a bit noisy out there on a busy night.
Jen Matheson
WOW. Amazing! I have been craving it ever since I went the other night. Fair prices. Very filling and totally delicious! The bread and dip entree is a MUST! Will be back again for sure!
Renee
Great Atmosphere and Food. I love this restaurant. The food is good, the service is friendly and the ambiance is great. It is a really good spot for a date and to try new things. There is a large selection on the menu. I do have to say, however, that the sherpa chicken at Tibetan kitchen is a bit better... but it is still good at Himalayan!
Brodles
Scrumptious!. Lovely setting, delicious food, leaves you full but not feeling heavy like some meals can. Tip: if you sit out the back, wear comfortable non-restrictive clothes as you may need to sit cross-legged. Certainly worth a visit or two.

Himalayas come to you... This is by far the closest you will get to good himalayan food in Brisbane... <br/><br/>Great ambience and himlayan decor and the staff are friendly and welcoming... <br/><br/>The goat curry and the mountain bread are definitely worth trying.

Busy, friendly, good food and big helpings! Good for vegetarians. Loving the Himalayan bread piping hot from the oven. You will need to book on the weekend!

Great for sharing. So yummy. Don't really know Himalayan food, but we always picked something delicious. It's great to go here with friends and split a few dishes.<br/><br/>It's always packed, so you'll need to get there early. It can get a bit warm with all the people.<br/><br/>The bread is better than naan bread (don't tell my husband I said that.)

Great atmosphere- We went on a tues night & it was packed! I had a lamb dish & my 2 friends had vegetarian dishes - We all loved our meals! The Himalayan bread & dip is a must have entree.

Fantastic. Fanstatic food/service and very good value for money. The bread is amazing! (make sure you order it as a starter). Ideal for groups

A different dining option for brisbane. I've been wanting to try Himalayan Cafe for a while and finally went there on Tues night. We didn't have a booking and it's lucky we got there early (6:30pm) as the place was packed by the time we left - obviously very popular! The food was great, really delicious - especially the mixed entre for 2 that we had. <br/><br/>Nice to have somewhere different to go aside from the usual Indian/Thai restaurants all around brisbane. The service was good and the atmosphere was fantastic but I think it's really the food that people go here for. I'll keep going back till I've tried the rest of the menu!

Like being on holiday. Totally worth the trip to New Farm.<br/>Best night out in a long time.<br/>friendly & relaxed.

Great food, terrible phone service.. They're just too busy to be friendly. <br/><br/>Great food if you don't mind the insulting level of service quality.

Cheerful. Not as cheap as it used to be but still a good portion size. Nice to visit every now and then.. just watch frequebt visits as all the dished begin to taste the same.

The first thing that hits you when you arrive at the Himalayan Cafe is the atmosphere, it has dark-ish interior lighting, some incense is burning by the shrine and the music transports you away. <br/>

The meat was very tender, you poked it with a knife and it fell apart. The sauce was quite spicy with a mild additional burn to the sauce after every mouthful...

No longer an unknown, you can barely get a table now without booking at least a week in advance. On stepping into the brilliantly themed restaurant it’s almost like you’re floating away into the mysterious glacial peaks of Nepal and Tibet. The chef is Kathmandu born, the music is home grown, incense wafts through Tibetan peace flags and every piece on the wall was crafted by a sherpa. And oh my, the food here is absolutely incredible. I’ve never tasted such au

This Nepalese restaurant has been established in New Farm for more than a decade and its decoration of Buddhist prayer flags, photos of the Dalai Lama and various religious statues offers a mysterious touch. Through the red wooden doors, you step into a different world. A world that is so far away from the bustling city life.<br/>

Himalayan Café is extraordinarily popular – it appeared to be a full house on a Wednesday. Whether this is a symptom of being in New Farm or that people recognise that they are doing a good job is hard to say, but I would definitely lean towards the latter. The place has done a great job of making itself unique in its design and atmosphere, the bright colours and obvious Tibetan theme makes for a pleasant and interesting environment to eat in. The only complaint I have about the atmosphere is that we were next to the speakers in the restaurant and I could hardly hear my dining companions in conversation. Non

Stop one on the Around the World Challenge was Nepal. I only live a couple of street away from the Himalayan Café but have never stepped in. Quite unfortunate as it not only looks but feels great. All I feel like doing now is lighting some incense, sittin

Ordinarily the tiny establishment on Brunswick Street is full to bursting and patrons spill out onto the 2 large family tables on the pavement outside, but if you rock up before the dinner rush at 7pm, you just might snag a seat that could take you to Sha
