Review Donna Chang - Brisbane

Nick Gentner
This is a really good restaurant! Firstly Donna Chang has an interesting wine list, which includes a great range of German reisling. We choose one of those, which matched the food perfectly. Secondly the food is really tasty and well presented. The standouts, from what we ordered, were the sesame green tea noodles, the house made pickles and the egg noodles with Chinese cabbage. Finally the restaurant itself is spectacular, in a beautifully preserved old government building.

Delicious Chinese food especially the pecking duck. The duck was juicy and tender. Authentic pecking duck and with good amount of serving. Donna chang has also one of the better cocktails. My partner had 3 cocktails as it flavourful and has a good mix of alcohol. The dim sum was yummy and steamed well. The ambiance and decor of the restaurant was elegant and yet simple.

What can I say... 5 stars. Bravo Beautiful. Food drink decor company staff great thank you and we'll see you again soon. Go here for good food and special occasions or just a date if you want to impress. Ask about Donna Chang and the history of the name.

Waiter was amazing and very knowledgeable. Food highly exceeded my expectation. Flavours were authentic instead of having a westernised twist. Service was very quick - table for 9 during lunch time. Very happy overall! Will definitely be back. Highly recommend!

Lovedddd the food at Donna Chang! Huge credit to our waitress Victoria - every single thing she recommended was brilliant. Her knowledge of the menu was key and just the general vibe from the moment we sat down was so welcoming. The cumin spiced lamb buns! my goodness đŸ‘ŒđŸŸ I would have been satisfied with just that and the perfectly made margaritas! But ofcourse we did order more and everything was delicious. Food came out fast, vibrant atmosphere and great restaurant for a fun date night and group dins! Can’t wait to be back and try more of the menu.đŸ„‚

Excellent food and service. Will Definitely be back and recommend. They also have private function rooms do a special family dinner. Advice from waiter and smellier a big bonus. Duck pancakes, sashimi and bug & prawn dumplings - amazingly good. Only minor issue is the seating as most tables have a chair one side and soft booth type seating on the other which is notably lower and not so supportive.

This restaurant offers a fusion East meets West experience with the bulk majority of the dishes being from Chinese cuisine. We ordered the white chicken and lamb skewers to start off with, followed by the chow mein noodle with cabbage, roast duck, char siu pork neck and some drinks. The white chicken was very succulent and flavoursome, cooked to perfection. The lamb on the other hand was a bit of a let down as it was quite salty and a little dry. The chow mein with fungi was also a tad bit too salty for my liking although the portion sizes were generous. Roast duck was very nice. The skin of the duck was very crisp while the duck meat was tender and succulent. It was difficult to fault the duck. The cha siu pork neck was also a bit of a let down as pork neck is usually very soft and tender. The pork neck actually tasted like usual cha siu cooked in Chinese restaurants but it was a tad bit dry. The honey coating may have caused the outer layer of the cha siu to be slightly burnt when cooked. There weren't many dessert options to choose from in the menu. I decided to order their special or the night, which was an expresso soft serve. In my opinion, the flavour wasn't strong enough but the soft serve was was quite smooth. Service was awesome. Staff were very friendly and polite. Atmosphere was also great. The open kitchen plan allows for guests and patrons to look in to see how food was made. The restaurant definitely pitches towards the high end Chinese fusion dining experience. Presentation was good and ingredients were fresh. My personal preference though is authentic Chinese food. The dishes are on the pricey side for Chinese food. If you are into fushiok Asian food, give this restaurant a try.

Honestly speaking, it’s average for a Chinese in terms of the flavour. The dim sum set is a bit pricey, but reasonable given the ingredients are fish/prawn meat other than pork. The fried rice is beyond the expectation as a side. Finally, nice gin and great service.

My partner and I were so excited to visit Donna Chang as our friends had been and said the food was great. We had such high expectations and it sucks that our experience was not up to par. The food was good, we had the duck and Kung Pao chicken. However the service was really, really disappointing. There was a tiny mess-up with our orders and we were given another table’s starter, which isn’t a big deal. But we spent around 5 minutes trying to get the attention of the staff, to let them know we had not ordered it. This was a pattern throughout the night, where we were repeatedly ignored by staff, I believe there was a designated waitress for our area but she never spoke a word to us. We wanted to get dessert originally but again, no one approached us and every time we needed something my partner had to put his hand up for a while (!!). Perhaps it was an off day but I think good service is very important in order to enjoy the food.

Had my 40th Birthday there with a party of 6. The services there are absolutely superb and nothing bad can be added to it. The dishes are all very well presented and come out according to your needs. The portion seem a bit small if compared to other Asian restaurant on the Southside. However, it was surprisingly fulfilling and we are unable to finish all our orders. The food was a bit too salty for everyone of us but I am sure the kitchen would be able to adjust to that. The price was a bit dear, again if compare to the Southside. Overall we are pleased with the experiences but I won't recommend it for casual family dinner - unless you got deep pocket.

Came here for a birthday dinner. Food and service was great as to be expected with the pricing. Pictured was Banana spring roll đŸ€€

4 out of 5 experience but only 3 out of 5 for food. Place is gorgeous, heritage building , very Melbourne. Staff and service fantastic. We did the big banquet and almost every dish was ‘almost’ great. Tuna tartare really tasty but ultimately, not a fresh tuna experience could have been anything. The strange flavour chicken salad not that strange, nice salad with sesame dressing I have made at home. Average prawn dumpling in amazing aged black vinegar with ginger. Murray cod excellent in Hinan style green onion coriander broth. Ditto the duck in plum and waygu. Deep fried ice cream gag. Had a really fun night but for the price? Not in any rush to go back

The atmosphere and architectural surroundings are amazing. The waiter and the somm were great especially the somm. However (I guess you knew there was a ‘but’ coming) the food was average Asian inspired fare. A standout for me was the Murray Cod in a Hainan style, which was delicate and subtle. The wagyu was drowning in Korean sauce which was unexpected because the sauce is usually a dipping sauce. The tuna tartare was good but too much chilli. I love chilli but often in a subtle seafood dish it can destroy the star of the show. The duck. An attempt to re-do Kylie Kwong’s amazing dish but lacked the subtle spice components. Overall Donna Chang lacked a subtlety and a balance. I’d actually like to give a 3.5 because of the expectations delivered by the amazing surroundings and super efficient and numerous staff (great to see a restaurant with staff in sufficient numbers for good service and less stress) the food doesn’t live up to this fantastic foreplay which was ultimately disappointing.

What a delicious experience! Staff were very attentive and the second banquet option was amazing. Standout wad the scampi toast, the Wagyu steak, kingfish, and the char siu with picked cantaloupe! Would highly recommend a dinner experience here and could only imagine what a private room experience would be like!

Not worth the price.

Ordered the “deluxe” banquet - asked for a pescaterian version. It was bland fish dish after bland fish dish. The wait staff were okay, but one in particular waltzed around like he was the manager, offered to recommend wine but knew nothing about them. The food and the hospitality definitely don’t match the fitout. Very disappointing experience - especially at $700 for four of us. We went to Donna Chang’s so you don’t have to.

It quite expensive for what it is. If im going to go back time and time again for high end asian, id probably be heading to longtime. The decor is absolutely beautiful. The waitstaff were fabulous. The eggplant was 10/10. Everything else (food) was 5/6/7 out of 10.

I dined here on Saturday night for my friends birthday. Situated within a heritage- listed building, featuring the most beautiful decor and lush greenery, this place is unrivalled! The menu draws inspiration from Sichuan and Cantonese cuisine and we absolutely cannot fault the dishes. Pictured is the kingfish sashimi with black garlic, oysters with ginger pearls and spring onion and fried eggplant with chilli dressing. Our waiter even went to the effort of organising a birthday cake (not pictured) for our friend.
The Gluten-Free Foodie
Donna Chang is such a beautiful restaurant - after seeing the review on Urban List earlier last year I couldn't wait to take my Mum who loves Chinese food. We enjoyed the splendour of the occasion and were eagerly anticipating the food. Our waitress was new and a bit nervous, not able to support the gluten-free dietary front very well. The dietaries menu is extensive and useful but does limit choices considerably (GF and DF). We enjoyed 3 dishes and some tea to finish. I found the Kung Pao Prawns disappointing but the rest was good. I didn't think the dishes complimented each other very well. I would come back for a drink and entree but probably not for main course.

I eat Chinese food all the time and spend a lot of time in Hong Kong. Thought I’d give this place a try just for a laugh and I was not disappointed. Food was hilarious.

My experience at Donna Chang was fantastic. We went to the venue for my mother's birthday and she was floored. The interiors are sophisticated and reminiscent of high end restaurants in cities like New York; high ceilings, antique wood panelling, over the top chandeliers and swanky velvet upholstery. The place is photogenic. The food was excellent. As someone with dietary restrictions, dining at Chinese restaurants is not always the most accomodating due to the ingredients that their meals are predominantly based around, like pork and duck. It was absolutely wonderful to see a range of options that I could choose from that were also clearly identified on the menu. Even better, these options were delicious and full of flavour. To top it all off I mentioned to one of the staff on my way back from using the restroom that we were here to celebrate a birthday and was wondering if I would be able to order a dessert to come out as a surprise. Expecting to order off of the menu and pay for this, the waitress kindly let me know that there was a complimentary option that I could choose to opt for. My mother felt very special having this little dessert revealed on a gold plate with a lid concealing the goodies inside. I will dine at Donna Chang again and will be recommending it to many people.

We had some friends from interstate come and visit and after asking around, we heard Donna Chang was the new cool place to take them. We weren’t disappointed, the quality of the food was high, the tuna was exceptionally spicy, the wine selection and knowledge of the sommelier was impressive and the service couldn’t be faulted. We will definitely be back! Donna Chang is perfect for those interstate foodie friends, business development dinners or date night.

In the Chinese Lunar New Year spirit, we decided to check out the CBD’s Donna Chang for a group gathering. Word was that it was a modern chinese restaurant that did fine dining. It is located on the ground floor of the Adina Hotel, a building which the Queensland Government Savings Bank once occupied. As we approached the building, we came to two doors. A sign indicated that patrons wanting to go to Donna Chang should use the doors on the left, and that the Adina Hotel itself was closed for emergency repairs.

Went there for dinner on a fri night. Service excellent with good wait staff. Food took a while to come out > 45 mins. Reasonable wine by the glass: craggy range Syrah for $16 was a standout. The restaurant must have model on mr Wong or Hakkasan around the world: great ingredients asian Style cooking with a price to match. Pork hock dish was nice, great contrast of flavor. The lobster was suppose to be a wow! The lobster itself was cook well and not over cook like a lot of Chinese restaurants. The homemade XO sauce was commendable but lack the punchy flavor you get in Hong Kong. The accompanying home made egg noodles for $4 was a bargain but wrong type of noodles used, as egg noodles tends to get over cook easily especially with hot sauce and meat on top. Dessert (sago coconut wasn’t worth hanging around for, needs done more work done to it and make it less creamy.
Well... very nice place serving decent “Chinese style” food.
However the whole experience is kinda a confusing mixture of modern and antique interiors, Asian and western fusion cuisine with Italian faced waiting staff... đŸ€”
The food is really decent but far from original or inspirational... seems like the chef has been trapped in a maze of Asian food tradition and can’t really get out of it.

I understand the hype, but my experience just didn't live up to it. 3.5 stars out of 5. Starting with the good, the spiced wagyu tartare was phenomenal. I'd return for that. Different, perfectly executed, an explosion of flavour, the perfect thing to start off the meal. However, when you start with such a showstopper full of flavour, the rest just didn't live up to expectations. It was fine, but I expected something more from the newest kid on the block. ---------------------Dumplings were good, but not as good as Madame Wu. The prawn and scallop wontons were like those from Billy Kwong in Sydney, but the balance on the sauce was out and it was too salty/vinegary and needed sweetness. Again, the pan fired cumin lamb buns were good, but not overly memorable. They needed a sweeter sauce and/or amplified fragrance. I fully appreciate the effort but the homemade chilli sauce lacked some depth. The duck buns at Madame Wu are a high benchmark to beat. I keep going back to Madame Wu and I'm sure thats irritating for them, but its their closest competitor in terms of cuisine, price and experience. --------------------------- Twice cooked duck pancakes were fine, but needed something extra to make them different. Can get relatively the same at New Shanghai, and for less. Couldn't help thinking that the 'twice cooked' nature of the duck was wasted time and effort. The woodfired grill moreton bay bugs wtih salted egg were way too woodfired. Far too much smoke/burnt taste. I'd definitely pass on these next time and try something else. ---------------------------------------Having travelled through not only Beijing and Shanghai but also Xi'an and Chengdu, I feel my opinion is valid and one thing I love about regional chinese cuisine is its vibrancy, flavour and freshness, something I think this restaurant has unfortunately missed the mark on, at least when I visited. Despite my mostly "take-it-or-leave-it" review, the menu has other great sounding things on it that are enough to entice me back a second time. Watch this space, I really hope they'll suprise me on my return.

If you like blood pressure raising extra salty mince noodle dishes or super sweet bbq pork pastry to bump up your blood sugar levels, then here is the place for you. Absolutely impossible to eat without rice. And speaking of rice, we ordered "enough" for what the waitress said was for 9 people, and what we got in return were 3 bowls....Not even enough for my 2 children. Thinking I was caught up in the middle of a dream, I politely confirmed with the waitress whom she once again stated that Yes I have ordered enough rice for 9 people..ok all good, I guess most people don't eat that much and it is just my famine stricken family. My family and I were all extremely disappointed after being recommended this place by friends. Anyway, hopefully you will have a better experience than what we had should you want to try.
On a side note, if you want authentic Chinese cuisines, just stick to Sunnybank.
Great service, amazing ambience! Very impressive place for dinner, with a great bar downstairs. The food was lovely. We shared the crispy fried eggplant as a starter, followed by the roasted half duck with plum & octopus in tamarind. Would recommend all!

The Moreton bag bugs and the duck dish was really good. The prawn and scallop dumplings and the abalone was ok. The duck pancakes were not that great but the fried rice was quite nice. I’ll definitely be coming back to try out some more dishes

Beautiful Chinese food in a colonial building ... light airy spacious and beautiful food. Murray cod was perfect and the black Angus black bean quite good. Have some dim sum type entrees and quench your thirst with Chinese beer
Better than a four Live farmed grouper await
Checked out this new restaurant on a Friday night, it was fully packed. The service was great even though they were busy.
Really enjoyed sitting downstairs seeing the high ceiling.
The food was alright, a bit disappointed with the duck pancake, as the duck was dry and not crispy. The sauce of the prawn + scallop wonton was too sour and the prawn didn’t taste as fresh.
Appreciated the complementary pickles, as the pickles gave us good appetites.
Highly recommend the silken tofu and the special fried rice. The bug was full of flavours as well.
Would love to come back to try the Yum Cha next time.
Lastly, remember to check out the Boom Boom Room at the basement for a drink afterwards!
