It’s such a pleasant experience these days to be surprised by a restaurant. Our 1st time at Detour will not be our last. The staff were very friendly and the service was on point. Having my favourite scotch is also a bonus. The menu is exiting and designed to share which is the way my partner and I love to eat. I love my meat and whilst the pork belly and the peppered lamb were lovely the stars of detour is their Herbivore menu especially the beetroot tartare simply the best vegetarian dish I have ever tasted. This restaurant is a credit to the owner and staff and just shows how much Brisbane is growing up. Can’t wait to go back and try some of the other dishes on this exceptional menu.
Just returned home from a birthday dinner for my mother and i have to say the food was amazing. It isn't often a table of eight will rave about pumpkin but we did tonight, I could eat a bowl of that every day. There wasn't a plate that came out that we didn't polish off, with the exception of the last 2, as we were completely stuffed by this time, but there is always room for desert and so, we had to try all of those too. Amazing night, sublime food and great service, no complaints at all.
Brilliant place with a great concept, it's awesome watching the chefs prepare all the food and bring it out.
The food is some of the best I've had. Creative, colourful and evergreen. Everything compliments everything else.
Thanks D., Luke and the other guy.
I'll defiantly be back.
We held the Women’s Fitness Adventures Christmas Party at Detour for 70 ladies. Fantastic in so many ways- from the brilliance of the food to the attention of the staff, the ambience, Detour has it all. Would definitely recommend
The food, wine and service here is second to none. Unfortunately it's taking us a little longer to work through the whole menu because I just can't resist ordering the emu tartare every single time we go. Which means instead of 2 or 3 new dishes each visit we have "emu tartare" and 1 or 2 new dishes. Last night it was the spanner crab and their cheese platter. Absolutely divine! We can't wait to go back again.

It was absolute pleasure to spend our Saturday night dinner at this venue. The staff is great, courteous and very attentive even if some patrons spill beautiful glass of wine into your dish and don't even offer apology. The FOOD is Divine. One does not know where to start... Emu Tartare, Octopus, Pork Belly or Smoked Mozzarella, not mentioning the deserts :). Thank you Damon & staff for the experience. We will certainly come back again :)
Had dinner here last night with some friends and found everything to be absolutely outstanding! The food was fantastic, staff members were super friendly, and the overall restaurant feel was very warming. Was decently priced for a nice dinner out. Would highly recommend the pumpkin and chicken thanks for a great night guys! :)
Pre Adele dinner and to say that the restaurant was busy is an understatement. Amazing food with great surrounds and prompt friendly service. With only one vegan in our party of four, the vegan options were so tempting that we chose to share a selection of all vegan dishes and they were delicious!
Celebrating our friends birthday great ambiance excellent service. Different food but just delicious highly recommend Detour.
Absolutely fantastic! Ordered the gunpowder salmon, the emu tartare and the pork belly and would definitely recommend any of them.
Amazing food and an immersive kitchen experience. You will be captivated by this inclusive fine dining restaurant. KFD is a must have, as well as the emu tartare.
Had my second visit here yesterday and both experiences have been exemplary. Fantastic food, great atmosphere, wonderful service and a compelling wine and cocktails list. What more could anyone ask for?
Delicious food and great venue! The menu was a little bit intimidating at first, but I really enjoyed each of the courses we got! Can’t wait to return!
Musings on @detourrestaurant
This place has been on my hitlist for a little while now, with a menu full of unique dishes (both herbivore and omnivore) designed to be shared, this place is exceptional.
On this occasion, we had the Emu Tartare with Burnt Shallot, Chilli and Yolk. A robust dish, with the Shallot balancing nicely with the Emu and richness of the yolks.
Next up was the Coal Roasted Broccoli with Miso, Spinach, Seaweed, Quinoa. While this was my least favourite dish, it was still terrific. The Quinoa is crunchy, and the overall texture of the dish was fantastic.
The final two savoury dishes were, without doubt, the best two of the evening..
The vegetarian Hawaiian Curry was both visually attractive as well as a taste sensation, I can honestly say that I have never eaten a dish with these flavour profiles before. The richness and spice (mild chilli) of the coconut curry is complimented by the inclusion of lychees and the taste of sweet potato. This is truly a masterpiece. Yes, I heard music when eating this dish.
Just when we thought it couldn't get much better - Wagyu Brisket with Green Tomatoes and Pepper Aioli. I won't be able to describe how good this was.. Salty, fatty, peppery and overall delicious. "More louder" music and that whole-body sensation that only the best dishes bring out in me.
This left barely enough room for Dessert and the Nitro Meringue with Basil, and cashews was a good way close to a great food experience.
The venue and service were excellent, despite the lateness of the hour (we started eating at 9.45 pm) the staff were attentive, friendly, and this resulted in a tremendous vibe throughout the restaurant.

The decor is beautiful and the service was good. The menu is simple but everything sounded delicious. We tried the scallops, pumpkin, carrots and fries. Scallops were beautiful with pork belly. The vegetarian dishes were inventive and tasty however they lacked protein which you definitely need for a main course. Fries were crunchy and yum. Dessert was pannacotta which was top notch. The meringue with yuzu I didn’t enjoy as much, the yuzu is very sour and overpowering and override the delicate flavour of the meringue.
Staff were friendly and attentive. Nice modern atmosphere. Large open space with high ceilings giving you plenty of room between tables. Nice easy menu to choose from. I like to try a bit of everything when and so the share plate concept was definitely a winner. All the meals were delicious except for the KFD which was slightly disappointing compared to the rest. The duck did not have enough flavour but the bread it came with was delicious. We also had the malabar crush and brash freeman cocktails which were both tasty.
Came across this place randomly as we were planning to go to another place across the road - thank goodness we did!!
Highly recommend this place for food, service, and atmosphere. It has it all!!
Superb, tasty, creative, BEAUTIFULLY-PRESENTED food served in a tasteful, modern environment of refurbished old factory or warehouse. Many Vegan options available that taste -well - to die for!! My husband and I discovered Detour by accident and now go there for our weekend 'dates' without the children. The service is terrific - friendly, without being unduly familiar or intrusive. One of our fav special places to eat in Brisbane!!
A surprising result - I enjoyed lunch here recently and was pleasantly surprised by the food, the atmosphere and the mood - I don’t often use the term “mood”, but Detour has a mood and it is relaxed and comfortable. The fitout and design is imaginative and gratifying. The food is diverse, full of flavour and fun. Great idea on the pork belly and ‘Peking duck’ style pancakes - aside from that, the pork belly was an absolute delight - always a good measure of how good a restaurant is. Service was calm and attentive. Seating was spacious and comfortable. Wine list was a little lean, but a good selection of what was needed for lunch.
I had dinner with 3 guests. Sat at the bar and enjoyed the well run busy establishment with tequila in hand. The Barman really knew his stuff for such a young guy. The wait staff were superb mix of experience and passion for the whole dining concept. The menu was varied and can’t wait to get back there to try more dishes the kfd and the pumpkin courses were delicious
Have been to Detour a couple of times and I’m always pleasantly surprised by the experience. The service is fantastic and decor super trendy. Love the open kitchen where you can see the masters at work. It really adds to the experience being able to see the chefs at work. I’ve tried the majority of the dishes here and can say they’re all amazing. My faves so far have been the lamb, gunpowder wagyu and panacotta dessert. All dishes executed to perfection. All flavours balanced and complemented each other. Lamb and wagyu cooked to a perfect medium. The bee panacotta was an experience as I’ve never had dehydrated bees before. They added a nice crunch to the creamy honey dish. This place is a regular on my rotation!
Bookmarked this restaurant under the recommendation by Meatballs And Beef Cheeks when we had the dinner across the road @ 1889 Enoteca last month. Purposefully arranged the Valentine dinner for the exploration. We chose to have the Omnivore food journey for the night. Service was friendly and hospital. Loved the ambience and the high ceiling lay-out. Open kitchen design reduce the distance between the chefs and diners. It is always a joy to see how the chefs preparing the dinner for us. First dish on the table was the Sydney Rock Oysters with Apple Caviar. The light touch of apple taste from the caviar matched well with the fresh oysters (4/5). Second came the Scallop and Pastrami accompanied with side dish of Smoked Mozzzarella. Quality of scallops selected was superb and the golden brown color really tempted my appetite. Effect of mixing smoked mozzarella with the cherry tomatoes, small slice of pastrami and scallop brought the whole dish to next level (4.5/5). The main of the night was the peppered lamb, which was perfectly done in med-rare. The beauty was the salt pre-rubbed into the lamb piece that made the saltiness matched well with the mint and asparagus. Side dish of smoked pumpkin was another careful selection to match the lamb, well done (5/5). The pre-dessert dish of cheese was another hero, particularly the slight blue cheese effect on the surface delivered the specific taste of blue cheese but not that strong (5/5). Using a little bit of honey and accompanied that with berries brought the sweetness and refreshing feeling to the plate, thumb-up (4.5/5). Dessert dish of nitro meringue came with a little bit of delay and lacked of surprising. It was a shame of this beautiful food journey (3.5/5). Overall, dining experience was decent.
Pro Tip: You must try the pumpkin dish... It's amazing.
Don't expect cheap and cheerful... But the food, ambience and service is A-grade....
We found out about this place after reading that the head chef of Public left to open his own restaurant and took his KFD recipe with him. It’s a really nice cosy restaurant, very clean and modern with the timber and warm lighting.
We started with KFD which was as great as it was at Public and came with some nice corn bread.
We then had gunpowder wagyu beef and coal roasted broccoli. Really interesting Asian inspired flavours. I’ve never had anything like it.
We finished with a mandarin chocolate marquee which was the standout of the night. Once again big punchy flavours.
July 2020. Rated 5.0. Went here for Friday date night following easy online reservation.
Designed as share-plates, we ordered the Monkfish (delicate), Saltgrass Lamb (very tender) and Fossilised Carrots (just as delicious as previously). For dessert, we had the Chocolate Mousse (silky ganache).
Great wine list (only several per the glass options).
Once again, good ambience (busy night of diners) and friendly and efficient service.
Overall, a great experience, although missing a slight innovative edge compared to last dining experience.
______
Jan 2018. Made a mid-week dinner reservation for Detour via their website email and got a quick response confirming a table.
We were swiftly attended to and ordered a couple of cocktails - The Malabar Crush and Brash Freeman, both very nice.
Then the food adventure began...
All dishes are designed to be shared. We ordered two dishes from the omnivore menu and two dishes from the herbivore menu:
> Salmon - was perfectly cooked, with complimenting flavours and textures. The ants were a fun touch!
> Seawater Potatoes - Once again, perfectly cooked potatoes with crispy potato chips and a wondrous plant called 'sea blite'. The dish truly reflects it's name - there was a distinct flavour of 'the ocean'.
> Fossilised Carrots - An inventive dish of, what I can only describe as, 'textures of carrots' with a delicious nutty, creamy sauce.
> K. F. D. (Kentucky Fried Duck) - Firstly, the coating was flavourful and crispy, and the duck was well-cooked. Secondly, the dipping sauce had good consistency. Thirdly, the corn bread had a nice hint to jalapenos, however was a little dry and crumbly.
We were satisfied at dish three, and was pretty full after the fourth dish. However, after an explanation from our waitress regarding the desserts, we just had to try them.
For desserts, we had the:
> Pannacotta - A deliciously flavourful burnt honey pannacotta, sprinkled with pollen. The granola was a little too much for the amount of honey-flavoured sauce given. Alert: recommend not to consume this dish if you have a bee allergy, as contains actual bees!
> Meringue - This dish is completely vegan as the meringue is made from chickpeas. I'm not usually a fan of meringues as they are too sweet for me, however this dish was perfect! A nice nutty, crispy and soft meringue with dehydrated and fresh berries, as well as toasted nuts.
Ambience is smart-casual with high ceilings, music and wooden panelling. Service was friendly, helpful and efficient. Prices are comparable to 'fine-dining', however based on the quality of food - worth it.
Three to four dishes are enough for two hungry adults.
Detour was initially on my radar for having a dedicated vegetarian/vegan menu (which is definitely lacking in most other Brisbane restaurants). After our dinner experience, I believe that all the dishes we have tried showed precision, ingenuity and passion for the actual food product.
Highly recommend.
Is our favourite restaurant - food is wow, service and ambience is great. We have followed chef Lucas McMillan as he is the best modern creative chef we have ever come across.
Wonderful location and beautiful atmosphere. Detour takes their menu seriously, allowing for a herbivore and a carnivore menu. Whilst many people think eating vegetarian is 'missing out', I didn't feel like I was lacking anything. All dishes were superbly made and very delicious. Staff are friendly and accommodating. Cocktails fun and inventive. New favourite in Brisbane.
Enjoyed a Friday lunch with the the ladies that can. 37 degrees outside and it was just beautiful in the restaurant with the aircon. The restaurant has a nice feel with open kitchen without being noisy. Service is good and well paced (given we over ordered). Wines we chose were quality and to be looked for again. The menu is a very different approach to dining divided between omnivore and herbivore. We sampled three of each + one side (salt n vinegar potato fries) all designed to share. We had the duck breast daily special, octopus, and lamb curry with the beetroot, carrots and broccoli. Really enjoyed everything but I would agree with previous reviews that the lamb was a bit dry. Pleasantly overate and we were nicely encouraged to enjoy our drinks and finish the potato fries at our leisure.
The Gluten-Free Foodie
+4.5
Completely delicious and a great dining experience.
The atmosphere is beautiful but a little loud for a intimate date for two.
Share plates were delicious, we tried a selection from the herbivore menu. My partner is GF so it was wonderful to have so many options to chose from. Unfortunately chef staff were unable to alter too much for low fodmap requests. Still really enjoyed the food!
It's been some years since my last "foodie" group outing in Brisbane, and the scene here has changed somewhat with more variety and budget options. My friend's had choosen Detour as our venue. Not sure what category it actually classify as, but to me it feeds like a hipster bar meets Mod Oz fusion. Interesting cocktail selections, and the staff were quick with taking those. It was a shared plate menu, what impressed the most wasn't some of the more exotic ingredients or combos (black ants, emu), but the fact they offer both a meat & a vegetarian menu of equal length. Being a big group we ordered about 3/4 of the menu. My favs for the night were the Gunpowder Salmon with the green curry & black ants (salmon nice & soft, curry subtle but a good note of spice, black ants were just crunchy), and Cauliflower with cashew curry & lentil (a head of cauliflower roasted, then topped with the curry sauce). The rest of the table also enjoyed the wagyu, but I thought it was a bit dry. The prettiest dish was the Hawaiian curry with a great floral & colourful palette. The service was good, and it was reasonably busy for a week night. Overall a great night out.
Finally, a Brisbane restaurant that takes Plant based vegan food seriously. The chefs took great pride in preparing our Chargrilled Broccoli with miso sauce and crunchy dried quinoa. My partner had the Octopus, which was outstanding. If you want quality dishes with attention to detail and mind blowing flavours. Get down to detour! :)
Lovely food and wine, however the thing that made our night was our waitor. What a great older gentleman he was! He was so sincere, personable and warm. He made us feel like we were having a real family meal. He really made our night.
In the Gabba precinct this is a great new addition to the area. Nice fit out, relaxed and flexible menu. Good wine list with options by the glass and a few quirks to add interest. Food is for sharing and we enjoyed it all. Professional and friendly service too... Will be back!
Beautiful food and great service , would highly recommend the salmon and crab , capsicum martini was exceptional and wait staff are very friendly . Will dine there again !

The former Executive Chef of Public, Damon Amos, has recently opened Detour, a casual-fine dining restaurant across from the Moreton Rubber Building in Woolloongabba. Newly renovated, Detour retains a bit of the industrial feel of the original building. Good service and exceptional food - plated for sharing - make this a must-try in 2017.
We made the mistake of trying to dine here for lunch on a Friday when they first opened, but despite being half empty we were turned away, being told they were booked out until 2pm. We walked across the parking lot and enjoyed an amazing lunch at 1889 Enoteca, but I noticed with interest that several empty tables remained empty the entire time we were there.
We decided to dine here for lunch yesterday (Friday) and I called to seek a last minute reservation, expecting to be told they were booked out, but was surprised when they said I didn't need one. I gave them my name anyway and was glad I did when the first question they asked upon arrival was, "do you have a reservation?"
We enjoyed the Smoked Mozzarella, Tomato and Basil, the Salt and Vinegar Fries and the Wagyu Beef Brisket.
Lady Meatball began with a glass of Tempranillo and the first dish to be served was the Smoked Mozzarella, Tomato and Basil. I loved this dish, but couldn't quite put my finger on what the slight spiciness in the orange oil was. Lady Meatball ventured that it tasted like pepperoni and wasn't far off as it turned out to be Chorizo Oil. This dish rated 4.5.
The Salt and Vinegar Fries were good, but were a bit boring until we started dipping them in the hot sauce that was served with the brisket. These rated a 3.5.
The Wagyu Beef Brisket was fantastic. The meat was tender and delicious, and went beautifully with the Coleslaw, Tortillas and Homemade Hot Sauce (rich flavour of roasted tomatoes and not too spicy). This dish rated a 4.5.
One main and two sides was enough food for the two of us, but we were celebrating, so we we went ahead and ordered dessert anyway.
Lady Meatball ordered the Chocolate Marquis - (this was essentially a decadent chocolate pots de creme topped with chocolate crumble) and loved it. This rated 4.5.
I went with the Brie Cheese, which was served with crisp lavash and quince. I loved this dish and was exclaiming how amazing the cheese was - soft and buttery - until my second to last bite when suddenly the roof of my mouth and back of my throat was on fire. I quickly swallowed what was in my mouth, but the lingering aftertaste and discomfort remained. Neither espresso, nor chocolate could counteract the taste in my mouth, which was quite unpleasant. It was then that I noticed a few chilli flakes on the platter, which the server confirmed were used to garnish the plate. I have to conclude that I got unlucky and a clump of chilli must have adhered to the cheese, because there is no way that a few flakes of chilli caused this (the other possibility is that there was something seriously wrong with the rind of the Brie, but I hope that wasn't the case). Up until this bite, this rated a 4.5. It seems ridiculous to drop the dish's rating from a 4.5 to a 1, so instead I will not rate it.
Normally, ingesting something that causes pain and ruins my tastebuds for 24 hours would be the death knell of a review. Instead, recognising that I immensely enjoyed the first 70 minutes of my 75 minute lunch, I have chosen instead to penalise them by dropping what would have been an overall rating of 4.5 to a 4. Those who know me and/or are regular followers will realise just how much I must have been enjoying myself to still rate Detour so high despite the finale.
I trust that my fate was a fluke and would still highly encourage you to experience Detour for yourself.
Had dinner here last night with some friends and found everything to be absolutely outstanding! The food was fantastic, staff members were super friendly, and the overall restaurant feel was very warming. Was decently priced for a nice dinner out. Would highly recommend the pumpkin and chicken👌🏼👌🏼 thanks for a great night guys :)
Great experience and unique menu. The banquet option is the way to go and received amazingly presented dishes which can sound unusual from reading the menu but taste surprisingly good. The lamb and brisket were the standout. Service was also good, helpful in explaining what all the options are.
The food of the Gods.
A very unique dining experience
Highly recommend it to anyone.
I mean just check the photos!
Amazing balanced tastes and full of flavours
My favourite dish was definitely the salmon with the ants
The second place goes to Emu tartare with
Burnt shallot that I can eat for a month
The food is perfection. Flavours are balanced and we kept wanting more with every bite. We love every dish that came out and the service was wonderful too. They were quick, efficient and attentive to us. Will definitely be back again.
Delicious food, excellent presentation and friendly staff. Really love the KFD and broccoli with miso, seaweed and quinoa. The wagyu was good too, however was served a little cold and dry.
Definitely need to book as they are always fully booked. Will be back to try other dishes.
The food here is exceptional and to be honest I forgot to photograph the second half of the meal as I was too excited and just wanted to eat it. They are amazing at gluten free too. Can’t wait to go back, drooling already at the thought.
We were a bit confused how to order from the menus, then friendly staff came to take order and patiently explained the cuisine. Excellent presentation of food, and very unique combinations.

Not my first time here, as it’s always a fairly reliable spot. It is however, for me, one star shy from out-of-this-world as there is always one dish that is a bit of a let down. I won’t mention previous occasions as they are no longer on the menu but this time it’s their smoked pumpkin.
The smokiness penetrates far too deep into this poor humble vegetable that at the end all I could taste is a smoked liquidy mash. I find it difficult to explain … but perhaps you will know if you try it.. but don’t. I do believe that it’s best not to bet on the Kent pumpkins (where its liquidity and sweetness can vary greatly even when they appear the exact same on the outside). Perhaps in another variety (such as the smaller kabocha squash) it would be more suitable.
I must mention however, that the smoked salmon and ants (oh don’t be a chicken!), beetroot tartare, emu tartare, wagyu brisket are all superb and I would be very keen to have them again.
Take a detour here! The food here is absolutely divine and offer a unique experience. Absolutely recommend the Coal Roasted Broccoli. The broccoli is soft and captures the smokiness from the coal and the crunchiness from the fried(?) quinoa provide a textural experience. Each dish was a flavour experience. And I found it quite enjoyable to experiment with each meal, whether it was assembling the Pork Belly Pancakes or mixing and matching the Gunpowdered Wagyu Brisket with the sides provided. Would definitely come back here again.
