Review The Golden Pig - Brisbane

The place was cozy. Service was quick. Food was cooked well. The chicken was yum! Highly recommended and it’s a good amount for sharing. Really enjoyed dining here

We had the banquet. Flavours were too strong and clashed for us. We just didn’t find any of the dishes to be balanced and they were too overpowering. Even the dessert had too much syrup. It wasn’t terrible but less is definitely more. The staff were certainly friendly and attentive though.

We were given vouchers for this cooking class by our son. We did not know what to expect so were very pleasantly surprised with the whole experience. Owner and chef Katrina expertly guided us through the Portuguese and Spanish cuisine recipes, providing us with some great tips, all of which were generally applicable. It was a fun afternoon, capped by sharing the delicious dishes we had prepared. Highly recommend this culinary experience to anyone who enjoys cooking or eating good food!

I did a cooking class there. A really enjoyable afternoon out. I got to have a chat to some fellow foodies, use some very cool knives and eat a delicious three course meal that we all cooked at the end of it.

Absolutely brilliant. Great food and drinks. Fantastic staff. I'll be back again and signing up for some cooking classes 😀

We had such a wonderful time at the Spanish & Portuguese cooking class!! Katrina was a fantastic teacher and was incredibly generous with chef tips & tricks. She managed to ensure everyone was included with a good mix of hands-on and demos. Beautiful venue, well organised, gorgeous ingredients & recipes. Couldn’t recommend this cooking school enough and am looking forward to trying the restaurant!! Thanks Katrina and team!

Had a booking for six at 6pm. We ordered four small plates, two medium plates, and four large pates, three sides. By 8pm we were still waiting for the two medium plates and all the large and side dishes. The small plates were nice and I'm sure they have lovely medium and large, but it never came.... Response: interesting response to another member of my party . Will basuki was part of my party. I guess your nice to some.

Fantastic place to do a cooking class! Fun, hands on and yummy lunch at the end! Thanks Katrina and all the staff

Had the best time today in the Italian Cooking class. Katrina was amazing, so helpful and made everything so easy. The food was incredible. Can’t wait to try out the recipes at at home. Will definitely be back for another class soon.

Went in yesterday, Tue, 21 Mar to have a simple brunch. I ordered the avo mach on sour dough. It looked good and the spices used on the avocado added great flavour. I questioned the cashier about the bread to try and confirm it was sour dough as that was listed on the menu. But the texture was very different to sour dough breads I normally eat. But she said that it was indeed sour dough. I still commentd that the texture was too smooth. I say all this because I am a Type 1 diabetic and use insulin to compensate for the carbs I eat. What happended astounded me because I went from a very acceptable 6.8 premeal to a very high 16.3 within two hours. My guess is that sour dough bread may not have been available and another bread was substituted without advising me before hand which would have been highly appreciated. Maybe a different flour or process was used which altered the carbohydrate value of the bread. Either way it was a disaster for me and could have put me in a dangerous predicament. This was my worst blood glucose reaction to a meal ever that ordinarily is not a problem.

I have just attended your food and wine workshop with EAN members at an Executive Assistant Networking function. The cooking demonstration by Katrina was fabulous and will be easy to introduce at home, plus tasted amazing! Peter Marchant, Sommelier delivered a hilariously entertaining, informative and brilliant summary of the three wines we tasted. The food was delicious and the ambience of The Golden Pig was a delight. Ten out of ten and I hope to bring a group here one day in the very near future!

Can't wait till next time.

Went here for an impromptu dinner with the partner following an evening walk around the Newstead House area.

Tempted by the banquet, and hindered by the minimum of four people requirement, we settled for:
- small bite, "betel leaf with rare beef": a light and delicious starter with tender beef, and nice bite of fresh citrus and tamarind.
- medium bite, "prik king stir fry of pork": a simple stir fry of spicy pork and beans; enjoyed the added pickled garlic and peppercorns.
- large bite, "sichuan spiced half duck": perfectly cooked duck with accompanying poached plums, which adds a balance of sweet and sourness.
- dessert, "chilli chocolate parfait": lovely creamy parfait with a very subtle of heat.
We had also ordered one side of jasmine rice to share for the mains, which turned out to be the right amount for us.

Casual ambience. The eatery is tucked away in a quiet street, nearby the up-and-coming Bunnings Warehouse. It also appears that they do cooking courses as well. Reasonably friendly service. Reasonable prices.

Overall, a lovely find for modern Asian dinner.

We've done quite a few cooking classes in our time. If a majority of those classes were taught in a similar fashion to advanced home-ec then by comparison, the Golden Pig takes a university style approach. Most cooking classes we've taken run you through recipes as a group before starting. Instead here they tackle each dish in separate groups and you simply get stuck in to the mis en place and techniques by yourself - asking your teacher for advice when needed. Unsure if this is the case with all their classes, but this was the case with their French Bistro 2 class last year.

Both positive and negatives can be taken away from such an approach, but as they say - the proof is in the pudding, and all of our proverbial pudding was delicious. We picked up some handy tips and tricks that we still use to this day and would recommend the Golden Pig to any true foodies wanting to learn some advanced cooking skills...however, it might not be as enjoyable for complete rookies.

Excellent food. My group of five each each ordered a different meal and everyone loved theirs. I had the lamb which was outstanding. Cool, industrial interior with lots of plants. Will be back!

Worst Reuben sandwich ever, we were having a service done on our bike thought we would grab a quick bite up the road. We are an older couple 50 ish and felt like we were not welcome. Chicken sandwich and Reuben all bread very little filling with no taste and served with a bad attitude give it a miss (not bad coffee but doesn't make up for the attitude.)

Being a food-lover does mean that I'm not too shabby in the kitchen. I'm not exactly creating croquembouches every fortnight, but I can churn out the basics quite nicely. Need someone to get that pasta dish done? I'm your girl. . Whether you're the executive chef at home or more in charge of the sponge and scourer, there's always room to learn something new in the kitchen. That's exactly what you can do at The Golden Pig Cooking School in Brisbane's Newstead.

I had a delicious today duck toastie here and coffee was pretty good too. Decor is industrial, with wide open space, order at the counter service. Service would've been nice with a smile, but it wasn't bad.
They also do cooking classes here- would love to try a class. It was a real pain trying to find parking, they do have 3 spots in front of the store, street parking is hard to come by, I think it might be a lot easier on the weekend when people working in the area aren't around. I'd come back, but probably on a weekend.

Casual Dinner - Serious Diner reviews. In response to your review, we have never had a Nose To tail Pig Day at the Golden Pig or any other sort of class involving Pig butchery. I think you have the wrong cooking school.

We are holding our very first Nose to tail Pig day on Sunday June 21st, 2015. It will be an intensive hands- on, 6 hour class of butchering a whole pig and cooking up a feast using different cuts including, braised cheeks, rolled and stuffed loin, crispy fried tail & ears, stuffed trotters, sausages and curing a ham.

Perhaps you should come along to our class!
Casualdinner- Serious Eater
Over rated over priced under delivered. My whole family did the Pig nose to tail. It's description was how too butcher a fresh pig Then cook in different ways.
The butchering was done by a chef & lasted all of 5 mins with very little participation or explanation as pig was small & too fresh!
The cooking was mostly done in advance with most of us only doing a little finishing touches.
And to top it off there was not enough cooking stations for everyone to do cooking...
Some people left after the cutting of the meat as it was squashed & we were sitting on hard steel chairs that looked like old wheels.
Certainly not worth the $480 we paid for 4 people.. Not doing this cooking school again. Many much better ones around.

P.S They gave us warm water & we had to pay for soft drink but beer was free......

It's the best of Melbourne food culture in the sub-tropics. A hidden gem for lunch and breakfast. A Sophisticated yet relaxed and spacious tropical venue. The food is always amazingly fresh and beautifully presented with delicious flavours. Gourmet is a word too often used, yet here it lives up to its dictionary definition. A memorable food experience that delivers quality food at affordable prices. Love this place!

My go to destination. I can't believe I walked past this place for so long. I thought it was a school only, not a functioning cafe. It is now my go to destination for lunch. I take clients here for casual meetings and coffees. The prices are slightly higher than the other very near cafes but the variety, atmosphere, food and drinks are far superior. They also have a fridge full of boutique beers if you need a cold one to deal with the rest of your day. The light, airy atmosphere, plants and constant , quiet buzz of busy staff and students always makes it a positive atmosphere. I am looking to attend some of their classes or events in future.

Cooking School Was Fantastic. Hi,

My Wife and I attended a cooking school together - the food was amazing and the experience cooking it was fantastic. Classes are run by dividing the whole group into smaller groups of 4, meaning we were put with another couple. Our experience was impacted by the couple we were paired with as they were regulars, and we open about their unwillingness to work in a team at all. We were still able to learn a lot, have a great experience and enjoy some amazing food, but the group dynamic is something that you should be aware of before going.

Highly recommended place to go for a great night out with a difference.

Inconsistent. The coffee was of a consistently good standard (best in the area) until recently. The main barista is a guy who knows his coffee and makes it fast with a smile and a joke.
The problem is he isn't there as much now and the place is suffering for it. Service isn't as good and coffee is made either by a new girl who is inconsistent or a white haired older guy who is not good, and from a female point of view, the white haired guy is poor at customer service (forgetful and he walked off on me while I was ordering) and makes unnecessary sexist comments.

I always look in to see who's there before I go in now, If the main barista isn't there I walk past.
Food is good but can be slow and is expensive

Food & wine lovers delight. I found a hidden gem !! If you love food & wine, this is the place to go. Fantastic cooking classes on offer as well as wine masterclasses. Katrina & Mark are passionate about what they do and love sharing their knowledge with everyone.

They are open also for lunch during the week, corporate events, special guest chef events, and breakfast & lunch on the weekends. They even have wonderful produce and kitchen supplies to tempt us. Definitely a food lovers delight all under one roof.

Best to visit their website to check out all that goes on at 'The Pig' ... oink ! (meg, new farm)

We love it!. We're so glad the Golden Pig cafe is in our neighbourhood. What an asset - we just love it! Friendly, attentive staff; excellent coffee; and wonderful, reasonably priced food. Their lunches are to die for! Highly recommended.

Ordinary. Not sure what all the fuss is about.

Don't go here here unless you have the swankiest of brand clothes on as you clearly won't be trendy enough and your money won't be the right currency. Coffee very poor standard, considering merlo and Di bella are both around the corner, so my expectations were sorely not met. Room temperature iced chocolates + expensive muffins.

Perhaps just open in the evenings if you are geared for that sort of trade. If you aren't prepared to do a morning tea trade to a decent standard then save on staff wages and a poor reputation and open the hours for what you are prepared to cater for!

Had such an amazing experience tonight at The Golden Pig Food and Wine school! Tonight’s cooking class was “wine punter workshop with Moroccan spiced shoulder of lamb and quince cous cous” -delicious and educational with such a warm and beautiful team! I love, love, love their branding and what they did with the warehouse space when you come in from the front you’re greeted with a well curated deli and then a cafe / bar area and finally the cooking arena where the magic happens even their contact email is adorable oink @ golden pig! we were seated with a glass of Rose at a long stainless steel table in a communal style and there was a happy, relaxed buzz in the air everyone was getting ready to have a good time! we were equipped with the recipes and a succinct guide to wines slow cooked meat that was filled with collagen absolutely spectacular spices and herbs Our chefs and talented restauranteurs Katrina and Mark both with impressive resumes and stemming from Rockpool! It felt wonderf
