Review Petrichor & Co - Brisbane

Saw the menu online and found many of the items really interesting so we wanted to try. I got the Spiced 🥗 Cauliflower Salad and my boyfriend got the 🌮 Breakfast Tacos. The flavors were nice and there was nothing wrong with them, however it was nothing special. I wouldn’t recommend anyone to go out of their way to visit here, but it’s not a bad place to stop over by if you’re in the area or already passing by and don’t have anywhere in particular to grab brunch at. On a side note, the 🍠🥓🧀 Sweet Potato and Cheese Muffin with Bacon from the counter was yum! Probably favorite dish of the meal hahaha. Make sure to ask them to heat it up as well!

$28... Really dissapointed and sorry to say. $13 for eggs on toast (was missing their chutney as per the menu), added salmon for $8 (salmon was like its been open in the fridge, all hard) and a hot chocolate (which was the best bit...). Probably won't be coming back. If the quality was better it would be fine, but $28 for something that a cheap franchise cafe could have made better - no thanks.

My honest opinion: overpriced and not good value for money. Perhaps you pay extra because of the Latino flavours, I'm not sure, but $23 for one vege fritter with a bit of plain avocado, a poached egg, a tiny bit of spinach and some salsa on top really doesn't do the magic for me, sorry. Can't remember the name of the dish my partner ordered but that was also in the range of $23-25 and the photo speaks alone (little variety and mostly scrambled eggs). The cafe has a nice atmosphere and friendly service, but I doubt I will return.

Overall great experience. Authentic latin american flavours. Highly recomend the Calentado with yummy plantains. Friendly service. The place was really busy but food didn't take long to arrive. Coffee could better. I think they have a new menu (maybe since my last visit) that does not dissapoint.

Delicious flavourful breakfasts! We loved our brekky here. It's got a great variety of Latin-American-inspired meals which all taste fresh and delicious. The coffee is great, too.

Excellent food, unique menu. Could be my top Brisbane cafe breakfast pick. In terms of the setting, north facing, accessible yet a relatively quiet side street. Subtle ambient music - appreciated, very friendly mature staff - comforting, but not overly spacious. I’d probably book if I was planning on going with any number of people. A nice bench above the sidewalk but I’d feel conscious about the room I was talking up if I was there to study at a table inside. Two dishes I've had: Aprea con Sobrebarriga Nutritionally, probably doesn’t need the eggs, the avocado and roasted sauce (chimichurri) are already two great, heavy creamy elements. In saying that poached eggs are my favourite, and tbh seeing them in the description was likely the deciding factor in my meal choice. The beef had a lovely tenderness as you’d expect but standout was the odd crispy end that added a great additional texture. There wasn’t an overwhelming flavour but there didn’t really need to be either as the roasted sauce, avocado and aprea all chipped in. Its hard to pick a stand out because the elements were actually so well balanced and complimented each other well; but!, if I had to pick one it would be the arepa, just for how surprisingly nice it actually was and the different texture bit brought to the meal. Petrichor's Patacon The crispy plantain was good, appreciably unique, at least to me, but probably twice as much as was necessary considering the volume of everything else on the plate. In saying that I wasn’t hard to get down and it didn’t feel like I was eating a plate of chips or anything. The freshness came from the super tender and moist chicken, avocado, sour cream and pickled jalapeños. A bit funny to eat with the size and texture of the plantain but civilised enough, the let down was just the ratio of these elements to the plantain.

Fine coffee. Food was hearty. The zucchini flitters were good and not floury, unlike many cafes we tried. Worth a stop by.

Good vibes, good food, very good service. We had weekend breakfast here, had their arepa, marranitas and empanadas, all tasty!

Best cafe in Brisbane!!!!

Caught up with a couple of dear out of town friends who love good food for Sunday late brunch and this place was perfect. She is vegetarian, he and I are omnivores. Three meals ordered and taste shared. All simply wonderfully tasty. So busy catching up we had to delay the request to order, twice - ie attentive service. Glad I booked as it is clearly well patronised, and justifiably so.

Near home base so was keen for this place to be good, the food is ok but i have been here 3 times and the service is woeful every time. This morning we walked out as we had not been served after 15 mins waiting, on a previous occasion they forgot our order
Pity cause I like to support the locals but three strikes your out

Explored this cafe on early October public holiday. Walked in and was greeted by a friendly gentleman. Purposefully ordered the Empanadas de Mama to try and gave it a go with a flat white. Coffee was no doubt a nice strong, smooth and tasteful drink. Importantly, it did match with the three deep fried secret recipe of Empanadas, which was wrapped with spicy pulled beef, garlic, onion and potatoes. I think the aji sauce to go with the empanadas is the hero. Highly recommended. :)

Across the multiple times I visited this spot, I found it rather hit and miss. There was no consistency with the food or the coffee - one could be great and the other could be questionable at best.

Service was quick and friendly, the food is excellent, nice setting with easy off street parking. We would highly recommend you try this lovely family cafe.

Relaxed atmosphere, fresh and airy. The food has always been good - modern, simple and healthy with a great twist of South American influence. Staff are friendly and laid back. I always enjoy a catch up here with friends for coffee and lunch or brunch. Easy and laid back.

Coffee was fine. Service was terrible. Our breakfast order was not placed and we waited over 30 minutes before eventually asking at the counter to be told it hasn’t been ordered. Very disappointing. And it wasn’t busy so they couldn’t use that as an excuse.

This morning had breakfast with my partner at Petrichor & Co for the first time. I had the slow cooked lamb and she had the beetroot fitters. Both were exceptional! The combination of flavours in the slow cooked lamb were a palette sensation and I’m hoping it remains a regular as I’ll be coming back soon looking for it. The service and atmosphere was really pleasant aswell. Happy we checked it out.

If your looking for breakfast with a little something different this is your place! You do have to wait a little for service but they do well for how busy it is and how many people are serving. This maybe why the coffees where inconsistence. But the food was fantastic, the combinations just worked and the portions where just right. Worth the money.

Empenadas for breakfast. Lucky as. Beautifully made and tasty. Coffees excellent. Hoping to come back in not too distant future to get into the other interesting offerings on the menu.
Well worth a visit and would recommend.

So good, the food is consistently lovely and the service is always great, has become a new favorite local for us.
Do yourself a favour and try the muesli with poached pear or the mushrooms for brekkie, im disappointed to see their rating is 3.3 average because theres only a handful of reviews, they are a solid 5!

I adore South American food & was very excited when we spotted this little gem last week. It was on my hit list straight away. Finally got to try it out for breakfast & definitely did not disappoint. That avocado was delicious with a Sth American twist. Loved the inclusion of dukkah, the heat in the chimchurra & that pea smash. Was disappointed they took the Colombian bubble & squeak from the menu above. The new Autumn menu had Mexican scrambled eggs in it's place I think (which the other half ordered) A delightful array of onions capsicum & salsas etc included with the eggs & a small potato patty along with yellow potato with a zesty lime zing. All tied together it made a beautiful breakfast experience for the both of us (not pooch as we almost licked the plates clean ourselves!) Forgot to mention the coffee! That was also amazing, loved the cute horses head coffee art (well it looked like one) & the coffee was rich, full bodied & delightfully strong. Top marks couldn't fault anything

Great food with a South American twist. Always full of flavour and good coffee to match. David and Paola are lovely hosts that have opened a gem

As if this nape of the woods did not have enough gems lined up to get foodies swooping in here, now they can vouch further by getting one of the less usual places for cuisines in Brisbane - and that is South American. Down to the bone, South American is fairly simple but it is rarely ever subtle. Life is too short for that anyhow. Getting into the groove of a typical Brisbanite's love of brunch, Petrichor shows how you can step right out of your element and enjoy most of the same charms. To me, more of the same would be out of my element; this is the kind of food I venture out for. And it is worth it again.

Between the usual commitments for a breakfast out, and going to church, this was going to be an early one - and maybe a bit quick, but in the end it was still relatively relaxed. What that meant was getting up early so that that was possible. Usually it is my house mate waking me up, but this time it was me doing the honours - and after that, it was heading off to Ascot and trying this place. After a bit of toing and froing, this place was found and in we walked for a good meal.

The whole place feels like a small warehouse in a few ways. It is open, and very spacious with not a lot of decorations here or there. It has some plants crawling up the walls, and a few tables that a communal. This is at the tail end of the shopping complex, so it has the wind coming in at several directions. A soft blue hue is occasionally dotting the walls. For what it is now, this will do. To me though, Latin involves being in your face so hopefully overtime it has more of that characteristic. The kind to invite you in without much of a gander preceding it, the music and everything. Maybe if they get open at night, that could be the aim. As of now, it does well enough.

Service is what it needs to be. We are not talking anything that is out of the ordinary in any way. It is the relaxed table service, so there is that added extra. Going here, everything can be done in-and-out within an hour, however they are not making you feel in a rush. They are friendly, and relaxed, so you feel right at home. Dishes are done diligently and cooked fresh to order.

The menu adds some Latin flair to the neighbourhood, which will certainly increase the reputation of Ascot as a dining destination across the whole of Brisbane. While it may not have intentionally started off that way, aside from having most of the expected breakfast options, it has slowly transformed itself into having many dishes inspired by Colombia and what a great choice. To me, Colombia is the best of the cuisines on the South American continent - to my limited experience at least. It has an all-day breakfast, that is anything but boring and a healthy option is easy to find. A few salads and burgers make up the lunch menu, then there is a whole lot of sweets and sandwiches in the cabinet (none of the sweets are Colombian, that I checked beforehand).

As for drinks, starting off with specialties there are a couple of specialty teas as well as the general varieties. Then they have smoothies - both classic and super - create your own juices, and homemade lemonade. On the more general side, you have yourself milkshakes and the classic of coffee. If something other than Latin/Colombian can be used in categorising here, it would be "health food". But I'm here for an exotic cuisine.

They get their coffee from Veneziano, which is often a reliable blend usually being a tad stronger than usual - but not without a nice flavour to it, slightly on the caramel side. That is what I have told, and to be honest I was sort of disappointed in the coffee here - more so because it was Colombian, as opposed to being from Veneziano. What I normally associate with Colombian coffee is one that has a very bold and characteristic flavour, with an aftertaste that can't be mistaken. The doppio here, while not awful, lacked some of that, and was merely an okay kind of coffee. Don't worry too much, as it was competently made with the extraction, the crema, and all that; its real issue was that it needed to be a little stronger - and that is something that maketh the coffee to my perspective.

In the age old tradition of sharing dishes, when they came to the table there was the cutting up and swapping between plates. For my dining buddy, it was the sweet corn fritters. These were topped with poached eggs, had a side of bacon, and an avocado salsa. The corn fritters were cooked till they were just right, there is the tenderness of the corn inside plus all the mixture of onion and that, but it was solid and cooked until it was slightly crispy. Nothing burnt and crusty, nor undercooked and raw - the right equilibrium that would make it a good burger patty. The poached egg was moreish like butter, plus you can't go wrong with bacon. This was topped with a spicy salsa that was akin to a hollandaise glaze. That was just my dining buddy's dish, and I had quite a bit to say about it. What about mine? Well ...

With it being a Colombian place, or having an exotic edge to it, the main thought process that I had was to find something that was definitely different to normal and order it. At some previous places that served breakfasts, and were run by Colombians, that was definitely what I went for and one thing is for sure regardless - these breakfasts are often full on, with plenty of protein, and well balanced. You might not need to eat for the rest of the day. That was the case in a couple of instances at Petrichor and that was the case with my dish. It had a name that was in Spanish, but it escapes me at the moment. Whatever the case, Spanish is not my first or second language, so I would probably ruin it regardless. What this was, was one long plantain, topped with pulled beef and an avocado salsa, with a small tub of beans, and a fried egg.

Well, what was not to like about it? This was something which was simple down to the bone. Yet from looking at in an exotic lens, it was something very wonderful. The meat was tender, the avocado was creamy, which was already to a good start, and the rest of the items contributed just as well to it. Starting with the plantain, with the way it was served and presented, the most apropos way to describe it would be akin to a potato (texture wise) that had a distinct banana flavour (taste wise) - if that makes any sense right there. On top of that plantain was a good lot of beef, which was cooked slowly until it was as tender as it could be - and the flavour was fantastic. Plus that was topped off with a good salsa, with a creamy avocado and plenty of tomato in in. The fried egg was a fried egg, and the small pot of beans was possibly what tied it all together. These beans were tender, were rich in flavour, and the sauce they were in was thick, rich and smokey. We are talking "frijoles" here, something that is way different to the normal beans for breakfast. This was done in a modest portion. I do love a big serving in a meal, however from a technical stand point there is little at fault here.

A 4.0 rating would be a bit of a drop to what it would normally be rated. That is because most digressions I can handle if there is effort and well-meaning behind it. However, lots of it hinges on how good I find the coffee, and if it is either a coffee house, a roastery, or a breakfast out (plus some particular cuisines), that will mean that the coffee is even more important that it does its job. At breakfast time, an underwhelming coffee is one of the biggest deductions.

I would certainly want to rate this place higher, as the food was exceptional - and I always like the service from Latin people, which more than adds some character to the place. Overall, the whole is fairly different to the sum its parts here. By all means, this is more than worth your trip out and it deserves to be ranked among some of the finest places that can be found here, since it demonstrates just how lively this pocket of the suburbs is. The vibe is relaxed, along with it managing to gain a popularity that is truly deserved. With some time, it will truly stand out.

TL;DR: A couple of things that have been established with my many ventures out were present here. First was just how good Latin American cuisine is, or more so in this regard, Colombian. If the food is not too unusual sounding, then at least it has some of the most distinctive and bold flavours galore on the palate. They mix it really well. What was a pity was the coffee - often I have found there is a unique flavour to them and I was looking forward to that. But this time, not so much - I have had worse, but this definitely lacked the character that I long associated with Colombian cooking. This it the next thing, where some places go above and beyond making menus beyond stock-standard, but falling short with the coffee. To me, having great coffee is nigh vital. That has been a strange trend to me.

Ultimately, Petrichor convinced me that Brisbane would benefit a lot more from having a broader range of South American cuisines on offer. As far as Colombia - and Venezuela, digressing - go, these are among the most friendly people and there is definitely something characteristic in their presentation, not only with the food, but also with how it all comes across. Here, you are not going to be deprived of a good meal, complete with it being relaxed. A great range of characteristic dishes, some general and others undeniably Latin, it is all good and it is safe to say that Ascot has got itself another big winner.

I went here for breakfast Friday morning and opted for the Calentado having been to South America many times. While travelling through South America, I have never eaten a dish that actually had all the combinations included in the meal itself, but the flavours did take me back. It is described as a Colombian "bubble and squeak". It's really just rice and beans done very well (probably better than what I had over in Cuba) and although it sounds simple, it's delicious. In Cuba they call it "Moros and Cristianos". Then you had the Argentinian chimichurri style sauce with the fried egg. My favourite was the grilled plantain which took me straight back to Colombia. Eating this dish put a massive smile on my face and reminded me of my travels over there so I loved it for that. The serving is also quite generous.

The only thing I could suggest is having double glass to serve coffees in because I had to wait for about 10 minutes for my coffee to cool down enough to hold.

Just like its name, Petrichor & Co.’s decor is clean and fresh. The menu has a touch of Colombian influence which is like a breath of fresh air in Brisbane’s cafe scene. They recently launched their spring menu which includes delicious options like the traditional Colombian breakfast, Calentado - Colombian bubble and squeak with beans, rice, corn salsa, fried egg and sweet fried plantains with chorizo ($18) and Arepa con Carne Desmechada - organic pulled beef, beans, guacamole, poached egg, pickled cabbage ($19.50) or if you are ofter something light and refreshing then the coconut chia seed pudding with fruits, maple syrup, nuts, sesame seed praline and fruit jelly ($14.50) is pretty good. I visited this cafe twice last week because I’m honestly obsessed with their food, especially the Calentado, because it’s utterly flavoursome and satisfying.
Food Glorious Food
I wanted it to be good. I really did. But it just did not deliver. Coffees were rather weak. Perhaps we are used to strong coffees? I must say the lunch menu read really well, will give it another shot at some stage. But with so much competition around, it will be difficult

The best breakfast I have ever had! It was fresh, delicious, and fulfilling. I didn't feel guilty for eating a big breakfast because it was so fresh. Flavours are better than that of any other cafe on Racecourse road! Get there!

Nice brunch spot with quite amazing corn fritters. Portion sizes were generous and service attentive. They also make a decent coffee and the chai latte is not from powder
Kat - Oats And Cheesecake
Don't let the decor fool you - these guys are much better than your average hipster cafe! Excellent coffee and lots of breakfast classics on the menu but given a bit of a revamp - French toast with chocolate soil and caramel popcorn; avo smash with basil chimichurri; baked eggs with chilli labna etc. Definitely try the seed porridge though, it's less like boring oats and more like a delicious hot chia seed pudding with beautiful poached pear and toasted nuts on top! Divine!
