Review Citron Restaurant - Brisbane

Angel H.
Great Asian Fusion. Excellent customer service. But bhoy food prices are Far too expensive for a regular /sm basic meal without side dish the minimum is $32 and more. Their dessert prices are by far more expensive and all the servings sre small $15 /dessert. My husband advised me cross this restaurant off our list.

I was very disappointed with the food here. Didn't enjoy it that much. I found the food very sweet with the sauce that was in the dishes and was also disappointed in the size of the meals. For what they were charging, I was expecting a bit more on the plate.I went there looking forward to a nice fried rice, but it's not on the menu. I paid the bill and on the way home called into hungry jacks. As least I have experienced it once.

Long time customer of citron for a very good reason, the experience is superb. I've been through most of the menu but my favourite is the twice cooked chicken. I've never had a bad meal here and probably visit 2-4 times a year.

Used to be a really nice modern cuisine restaurant. Trying to stay the same but now just an overpriced Thai restaurant. Meals are not up to the old standard. $38 for a Thai curry and rice that has very little meat in it. Might be ok if the service was good. But it's not. 1/4 full on a Saturday night.

My partner and I ate there last night and I have to say it was one of the best meals that I have experienced in a very very long time. The Asian influence and the lightness of the flavours was quite simply stunning. I am a local (and also owned my own fine dinning restaurants in Sydney) and I have eaten there many times over the years as it is a favorite place of mine but it was the first time for my guest and he was very impressed. The portions are not enormous but you don't need them to be as the flavours of each dish are. Only one small comment - sorry to see only three items on the "taster plate" instead of four!! Highly recommended.

Went back to this restaurant for valentines day after having eaten at this restaurant once before and loved it...not so this time. We had to wait 1.5 hours for or first entree and a further 45 mins for the 2nd entree with no apology whilst people that arrived after us being served first. Lots of complaints from what we saw by other diners. Restaurant wasnt even 1/2 full with one waiter. On leaving we we told that their 2 wait staff didnt turn up and no attempt to offer a discount for our experience given that we spent more money on drinks than we would have waiting for our average meals. People i dont like bagging out places like this but we wont ever go back and will most certainly let our friends know of the disappointing time we had.

Love this restaurant and so glad there is a restaurant in of this caliber in our local area. Robert and his team always deliver excellent service - polished without being pretentious. The food is consistently delicious and paired with a good wine list. It's also reasonably priced for the dining experience. Hands down one of our favourite restaurants in Brisbane.

I went here with my partner and absolutely loved it. We had tapas including the soft shell crab bao, prawn leaf, chicken stuffed with prawn, spring rolls and scallops. Every dish was so full of flavour and the scallops melted in our mouths! And our waiter, Patrick, was lovely too! We can’t recomment this place enough! We’ll definitely make this place a regular! Cheers Kym and Blake

Citron is in a nice location just off Kedron Park Road, elevated with balcony seats as well as tables inside. The wine list is just right and we had a glass of sauvignon blanc to start. Everything on the menu sounded appetising, so it was difficult to choose a dish – this is always a good sign. For the starter we chose a small plate of mixed hors d’oeuvres consisting of a betel leaf with sandcrab, coconut, chilli and coriander, a mahor (minced prawn and pork with peanuts on pineapple) and a heavenly beef bite with nahm jim jaew. All were delicious and set the scene for a very nice meal.

The food here is very interesting and tasty. Service was great. Decor needs an upgrade. Overall an enjoyable experience. Look forward to getting back

Had a dinner at this modern Asian restaurant end of last month. It’s neon night decoration is really outstanding among the other restaurants nearby. Service was average and so as the vibe. Ordered some dishes to share between two of us. First of all, we were shock with only one chicken wing on the dish of stuffed chicken wing with prawn paste. Although the presentation was well presented, I could not taste the prawn taste and it ended up too pricy for an entree like that. The next dish of soft shell crab bao is more reasonable but just average standard without “wow” factor. Panang curry beef cheek was not bad; beef cheek was well cooked but curry taste was not strong and again beef cheek was not that generous for the price they charged. Hero of the night should be the Aoy Glazed Ocean Trout. Fish was cooked perfectly and the portion was back to normal. Overall impression was slightly pricy.

It was the worst restaurant experience I have encountered in my whole life. Despite making the restaurant aware our party of 12 would be coming days in advance it took 2.25 hours to receive our main. These were the only meals we ordered. There was no apology or acknowledgement of wrongdoing. Citron is under new management and do not associate it with it's former years of quality.

Citron does modern asian well and is a must-visit to all Northerners. I had dinner here recently and enjoyed great dishes, with the larger plates really doing the restaurant justice. The beef and lemongrass bites were much too salty so I would avoid in future. The szechwan calamari and grilled beef were cooked perfectly and would 100% recommend. Staff were friendly and unpretentious.
Tony
Great meal but stuck on a plastic table with picnic chairs. This is fine dining, needs to get rid of the 10 dollar chairs, really uncomfortable.<br/>

Love, love, love Citron!!<br/>I've been going here for years. It's one of my all time favourite restaurants. Their modern Asian fusion menu changes seasonally while still retaining popular dishes throughout the year. I don't think I've ever missed the Betel Leaves with Sandcrab as an entree! The food is sensational and consistently of a very high standard. Great wine list as well.

In the rush to try the latest new dining sensation, it's easy to overlook restaurants that have been around for a while like Citron at Brisbane's Wilston, and that would be a mistake. Restaurants that have stood the test of time do so because they have a loyal band of regular diners who know exactly what to expect when they sit down and peruse the menu. They produce consistently good food and offer efficient service.  While all this doesn't seem that hard to achieve to a customer,  restaurateurs will tell you differently.

Great modern Asian food, best that I've found in Brisbane so far! Great service as well. The stand out on the menu for me was the peanut crusted beef cheek, so tender and a really flavorful sauce. Highly recommend for an intimate dinner with wonderful food.

I have been wanting to go to Citron for a while now and whilst the reviews I read were great, I was a little disappointed. I understand this is a modern Asian restaurant that is fine dining but I felt the cost was a little steep. I had the spiced quail with salad and for $38, didn't feel it met my expectations. I have had better quail at other Asian restaurants but the salad was full of flavour. My partner had the mixed entree which included beef bites with a chilli sauce and coriander - these were delicious! I may just have imagined a different kind of meal before going there, but it wasn't the best food. The service was great however and the manager was very friendly
Food Nom Nom
Dined at Citron with a friend who raved about this place for ages. It is literally around the corner of where I live so decided to give it a shot. <br/>We ordered sandcrab betel leaves which was quite tasty and flavoursome. For the main I ordered the oxtail congee, priced at $32, it would be the most I ever paid for a congee in my life. But I didn't mind, as it was quite rich and hearty, like a stew and it was perfect for a cold night. The flavours were interesting and it was quite different to anything I have ever tasted.<br/>The decor is quite lacking for being a fine dining restaurant, felt more like a cafe and interior was slightly dated. Service was ok and the waitresses were attentive with topping up water.<br/>Perhaps I was let down by my high expectations as the food although tasty it was nothing that blew me away. <br/>Glad I came to experience Citron however I don't think I'll be back for a while as I much prefer authentic and traditional flavours of asian cooking rather a modern take on it, each to their own :)<br/>

Tasting plate for entree, prawn pancakes for main and donuts for dessert to. Cannot fault this lunch except to say I was disappointed that there was no sticky black rice on the menu. I will return for that (and other menu options). Service was exemplary.<br/>

One of my favourite brisbane restaurants. The menu is always very original here and in my experience the service has always been exemplary. The host is warm, informative, attentive and funny. Reasonably priced especially for the quality of food being provided. I have been and will remain a regular customer.

Entree took 45 minutes to arrive (it was a busy night), but it was delicious (mixed plate). Main arrived about 15 minutes later. Pork belly was delicious and the salt and pepper squid okay. Service nothing extraordinary, cost was a bit high. But food was yum and well presented. Would go again, 7/10

This is one of my favourite restaurants in Brisbane! Every time we go the food is exceptional. Peter, the maitre'd, is always welcoming and has an extensive knowledge of the menu. I would recommend to anyone!

Wouldn't return, not good value for money!. After seeing the high percentage on Urbanspoon we decided to try out Citron, and were left very disappointed. Both myself and friend ordered salads as mains. At $34+ we expected a fair bit and were not left impressed. My salad the duck and watermelon, was coated in far too much dressing, making it soggy and sickly sweet. The duck was chewy and overcooked and there was around 3 cubes of watermelon in the whole dish. My friend ordered the calamari salad and received a mountain of calamari and a zucchini ribbon as the salad. The service was good and they were attentive, however when we said we did not have a reservation the waitress claimed we could have the 'last table' which was in the corner by a door, right next to every other couple. However, there was at least 10 empty tables around us, and they remained that way the entire night. Overall, it was nice but definitely not value for money as we can cook better meals ourselves. I wouldn't recommend and will not be returning.

Mushroom dish. I ate at Citron Modern Asian Cuisine recently for a family event and, I’m sorry to say, it was not an enjoyable meal. The service – yes – very very enjoyable. The staff paid great attention to each customer. However the meal I ordered was not satisfying. The mushroom dish I ordered was not edible in my opinion. I enjoy mushrooms and was excited to eat my meal. The waiter described the morning glory and lotus root – however did not mention the strange mushrooms/fungi that were also included. I like to try new things but the strange fungi’s were not only unattractive but not tasty. The regular mushrooms were very rubbery and even the sauce was lacking a good flavour. I found the only edible part of the meal was the morning glory.<br/>I was also concerned with the price of the wine. I ordered a chardonnay (without looking at the menu); later finding out that the price was $14. I don’t expect to pay more than $8 – $9 for a glass of chardonnay at a restaurant (maybe more if it is a fancy Riverside restaurant).

Ate at Citron tonight. Props to the kitchen team. Beautiful Asian flavors and well priced, definitely coming back to try the rest of the menu.

Worst lunch ever. We had a Sunday lunch at Citron with a group of six diners that had been booked for 1pm. Having called to say we would be 10 minutes late, we were told that the kitchen closed at 2 and we would have to order promptly when we arrived, which we found strange. A sign of things to come. On arrival we had a brief visit from a waiter with a short concentration span. He then revisited some time later to take our orders and rolled his eyes when we wanted some explanation about the menu. He again decided to leave us well alone for another 15 minutes and our order was finally taken before the 2pm deadline. We were seated on a freezing windy day on the deck with plastic covers to shield from the elements, with not a soul seated in the warmth and comfort of the inside of the restaurant. We later discovered the reason for this was to enable the staff - including manager/owner? and our waiter to mop the floors inside so that they could get away quickly after our last mouthful. Chairs nearby were also stacked. I have never felt so unwelcome and disrespected at a restaurant in my life and have enjoyed restaurants around the world. A disappointment to say the least and a promise never to return after our 2.30pm departure! Shame on this restaurant - can't remember the food as the rest of the experience overshadowed what we ate.

Outstanding. The wife and I went to Citron on Friday, and were blown away by the quality of the food.... we're fortunate to eat out often, and I'd put Citron up there with the best 5 meals I've had in Brisbane (up there for me with Reserve, Ortiga, Montrachet and Brents).<br/><br/>Really outstanding flavours & textures, good friendly service and a nice & relaxed atmosphere,<br/><br/>we'll be back!

This is our favorite restaurant in Brisbane. Great service, delicious food and relaxed atmosphere. We just keep going back

Fresh, vibrant. Citron would have to be one of the best restaurants in Brisbane. It consistently delivers fresh, delicious Asian "fusion" with an ever evolving menu so the lucky Wilston locals can go back time and time again and never get bored! And never be disappointed as each dish is always delicious! The service is always terrific and friendly.

Spot On. I searched Urbanspoon for a restaurant in Brisbane which would replicate our favourite modern Asian in Perth. This one came up trumps. It was everything I was looking for and more. The food was excellent and full of asian flavours. We were not disappointed with anything and the highlight was the exceptionally knowledgable staff who provided great advice and excellent service. Definitely worth going to if you like modern asian food. The wine list was an unexpected bonus and we also found one of our favourite wines on it.<br/>The beef cheek was delicious I just wish we lived in Brisbane so we could go back and try everything else on the menu!!

Hidden Gem. Extremely good modern Asian food. Been to this place about 5 times now and the food has always been sophisticated, fresh and delicious. Ambiance is probably not perfect but the staff are friendly and efficient.

A delight for the taste buds. This restaurant was such an unknown for us and visited it for a casual lunch. We left absolutely committed to coming again to try more of the sensational food. <br/>Very well designed and balanced meals with great thought and care put into their making. The atmosphere is fresh and contemporary with quality tableware and excellent efficient service.<br/>Looking forward to my next food experience there.

Loved it. A feast for my taste buds! <br/><br/>The food was divine and very innovative. The flavours were a burst in my mouth and I enjoyed every mouthful!<br/><br/>The service was excellent. Not too intrusive yet attentive.<br/><br/>I have already hinted to my husband that this is where I want to be taken for mother's day.<br/><br/>Love it!

This is the best restaurant in Brissy. The food is always 10/10 service is great too Really worth trying.

Great Lunch. Went with a large group for lunch and will definately be back soon for dinner. Loved the tasting plate- different flavours and textures were so fresh and vibrant. Then the whiting with a glass noodle salad- absolutely loved it. Happy and professional service rounded off a relaxing lunch.

The food here was delicious! To start off with we had the tasting platter which gave us a chance to try all the starters. These were great and the serving sizes were perfect. For our mains we had the ribs and the green fish dumpling curry. The ribs were amazing. Very tender and full of flavour. The green curry was good but the ribs were the ultimate winner. The service here was also excellent. Very attentive and the staff were very genuine and keen to help and give advice. Overall a very good dining experience which we will be returning to and recommending.

Ho Hum. Well really, I thought not much of it at all !<br/>In a small group on a quiet night ... food was mediocre but high in price. <br/>Menu talked everything up but plates did not deliver.<br/>Flavours were nice but repetitive across most meals in the group.<br/>I think I'll try it again but will be looking for more value and better service next time.<br/>DT

Deflated. After hearing about Citron from some well respected sources we gave it a good try ... We were sadly disappointed that the wine which we were served was not the wine which was listed but was a cheaper blend which we know is an inferior substitute. When the problem was brought to the attention of the manager ... he did nothing ... not a thing ... zip ... not even a word ! <br/>Secondly, my choice of main meal outlined a very tasty salad which contained my preferred ingredients. What was then served however was again a poor substitute with not one ingredient from the published menu...not a thing ... zip ! So for us it's simple 2 out of 2 fails.<br/>The rest of the meals and service was adequate but far from memorable. <br/>We won't be back.

Gastronomic Excellence. The crispy green rice king prawns were divine, and the twice cooked crispy chicken was 'melt in your mouth' juicy. The desserts are a reason to return on their own! The service was attentive and polite and the drinks were well priced (cheaper than the prices at the movies!). Citron is a fabulous suburban restaurant that gives it's Eagle St contemporaries a run for their money. I'll definitely be back!!

Yum! I don't live in Brisbane any longer but when I head bank to visit this is a must visit on my list! I need to get my fix of the Twice Cooked Chicken and the betel leaves! I'm salivating just thinking about it!!!

Excellent food, excellent service and great wine list! Can't fault this place!

Everything was really delicious with lots of interesting flavour combinations - the beef cheek, twice cooked chicken and eggplant mains were outstanding. desserts were scrumptious too particularly the condensed milk ice cream OMG.

We love Citron! The food has always been superb and I think reasonably priced for the quality. The service is friendly and extremely helpful if you can't decide what to choose from the amazing menu. Highly recommended for a special night out!

Oh behave. Well hello there fellow diners, RRR here. had the pleasure of going to this little gem last night for dinner after my GF talked me out of a bit o' pizza action. I'll tell you one thing, my mood quickly changed when the entres arrived... YAHOOO... i dunno what the hell was going on but what was happening in my mouth was legit. I won't even talk about the mains, in fact I will, given this is a restaurant review - they were simply fantastic, lamb on the bone with massamum curry. I think I am dead and in asain fusion heaven. Look in all seriousness, great service, lovely food, reasonable price for the quality - will be heading back there fo' sure. xoxo RRR

Well done Citron! We Enjoyed the mixed entree tasting platter and the spice duck sausage and to start followed by shared mains of the ocean trout with kafir lime sauce and sticky rice and the pork belly. Dessert was the Creme brûlée served with green tea syrup and papaya as well as warm donuts and white chocolate parfait. Food was well extremely good 8.5/10 service could have been slightly more attentive but we were never left feeling forgotten at around a 7.5/10. Ambience 6/10. Be sure to check this place out - well worth the effort

My favourite restaurant in town! Love everything on the menu. Never get dissapointed there. Fresh ingredients, yummy food, great service, nice atmosphere.

Oh my god!!! What an amazing soirée of flavours?!? We went out of our way to go to this place and boy! did it pay off. Unbelievable food, fresh flavours and fantastic service. I personally recommend the Bette leaf prawn entree. To die for!!! My vegetarian partner absolutely loved his eggplant dish. Although there were only 2 veg options on the menu, it seemed like some of the dishes could have been modified. Loved it, loved it, loved it!!!!

Great modern asian. Fantastic restaurant in wilston. high quality tasty food every single time. the betel leaf roll up with crab is delicious and better than other versions around town.<br/><br/>menu changes quite often but always good as is the service.

Always superb. We have been dining here for years and go at least once a month and it is always amazing. The food is fusion asian and full of flavour. Nothing bland or boring here. The menu changes regularly which means there is always several new options to choose from keeping it fresh and interesting. We have always had fantastic service. Most of the time we take the children with us as they love this place as much as we do. The children's menu is great with the mild chicken curry with rice and green beans a firm favorite with our children.

Flavour Creations. I absolutely loved my experience at Citron. Having being there about 6 years ago, I revisited the restaurant with a small group of friends Saturday night and everyone went away very satisfied. We did the whole experienc - tasting plate, entree, main and dessert. Each meal had such wonderful, different flavours that were light and not overpowering. My favourite dish was the betel leaves with crab - recommend everyone starts their dining experience with this.

Overrated or off night?. To be really honest, we had a poor experience of Citron.<br/>Our evening got off to a bad start before we had even left home when an hour or so before our booking we took a call from an officious young man asking whether we still wanted the reservation because, "he had a very busy restaurant and had been trying to contact us all day to confirm we were still coming but no-one had bothered to call him back". This was despite the fact we had only made and confirmed the booking the day before, had received one phone call on the day of our function and had returned that call. When this was pointed out to him - we received no apology but an inference that we were somehow still in the wrong.<br/>We then received the opposite experience while in the restaurant when we were served by a maitre d' who was overly friendly and familiar, and seemed to think that, because none of our party had been to Citron before, we had never been to any other restaurants either and needed in depth training in how to read the menu and eat the food!<br/>The total bill for the night which included a tasting plate (different and smaller to the entrees on offer), main course, desserts for some, plus a small amount of alcohol came to about $75 per person. So, mid-range prices. But for those prices, we would have expected some finer touches, like the wait staff remembering who ordered what rather than yelling out every dish at every course, less needless interruptions to our conversation, key side dishes such as the rice arriving at least within several minutes of the main dishes, and the decor (at least outside) being a little more than a sidewalk cafe with chairs we feared may break at any time.<br/>Now onto the food. Everyone enjoyed the tasting plates. The table was divided by the mains: three people ordered the duck curry and absolutely loved it. Two of us ordered the twice cooked chicken and found it to be dry with an overpowering, medicinal-tasting sauce that seemed a little burned. Finally, one of our friends ordered the heavenly beef and was relatively happy with it but found it a small serving. The biggest hit of the night? Everyone at the table agreed the side of green beans were the best we'd ever tasted!<br/>For dessert we ordered a range of dishes among us: chocolate tart, lemon meringue, ginger and fig pudding, and rice pudding. We were all disappointed. Some just were not that tasty, others were on the very small side, particularly for $14.00. So, go elsewhere for dessert - even The Coffee Club across the road has better sweets.<br/>The people in our party were fairly experienced diners who have dined at top restaurants but are also happy with a good pub meal. We all felt that this restaurant's food was overrated for the price ... and the service simply schizophrenic. Going by the other reviews, it looks like we might be in the minority so maybe the restaurant was just having a bad night? Or maybe they might be believing their own publicity too much!
Lily
Great food and service and good for kids. Very impressive food as always at Citron but recently first time with the kids.<br/>The kids menu was excellent and the sticky beef noodles and mild chicken curry were hits with the kids and a great option to something with chips.<br/>Everything else was great the service whilst inexperienced is very attentive so top marks.
A Tasty Affair
Secret's Out. This is one of my absolute favourite restaurants in Brisbane. I have been a number of times now and every dish has been fresh, tasty and with a twist! <br/><br/>Definitely recommend the mixed taste plate or betel leaves for entree, twice cooked crispy chicken, caramelised beef cheek, sweet sticky pork with scallops and apple/papaya salad for mains, wombok for sides, and if you can still manage the dessert, try the caramelised pineapple tart or "lemon meringue" pie with a twist. Food heaven!!!<br/><br/>I ALWAYS bring out of town friends here because I am certain they will walk away satisfied - with the flavours, the volume of food, wine list and the level of service. It is evident the staff are proud of their offerings and passionate about their concept.<br/><br/>The only flaw is that in winter with all the blinds down, doors closed and tiled floors it can become a little noisy....
Lisalovesdiamonds
Lisalovesdiamonds. We had a lovely time. Flavours fresh and tasty. Crispy twice cooked chicken with zesty asian salad was lovely. Seared scallops and pork belly a hit. Had the pannacotta with an asian influence, not really for me but well done and presented. Husband had roasted banana pudding which is really loved. Mains approximately $32, portions were more than enough for us. We will be back. Service excellent and cheery

Mummy likes Citron. Summer ambiance is lovely in the outdoor area. With 3 yr old in tow, we arrived early and were given a lovely table with friendly and attentive service. Basic but good kids menu and meal arrived promptly. <br/>For entree the tasting plate and betel leaves a hit as always. His beef curry was nice and my prawn, mussle and fish curry was great - perhaps a few more asian herbs to finish it off. <br/>Overall, quite good and the stand out of Wilston Village.

Fusion... If you are after Authentic Chinese Cusine, I wouldn't recommend Citron to you. If you are after new things like fusion, this restaurant is worth of a try. I saw this restaurant that has lotsa good reviews so I wanted to give it a try. My partner didn't know it is "Modern Asian" and this restuarant has completely taken him out of the box in term of "Asian". We tried a dish of everything as an entrance, pork belly and duck salad as mains. Entrance was a bit small in portion. The taste was nice and for sure out of our imagination. A lot of vinegar with other unknown but vibrant Asian sauce that really lift up your taste bud before the main. Pork belly was really really fresh. We haven't had pork belly for a long time and this is the best by far. The fat just simply melted in your mouth and didn't leave any unplesant taste after all. Again the portion is a bit too small though... Duck salad was a bit let down unfortunately as there was nothing special. All in all, it was a nice fine-dinning experience.

Fresh tasty modern asian. Robert came over and commented on the buzzing restaurant that was soon to be full to capacity in about 30 minutes. The service continued to be spot on as the other half the place filled all at the same time. The share plate for $9 is a must try & offers something different to the regular starters items including of course, the Beetleleaves. Mains consisted of the duck red curry, the kingfish, prawn & mussel curry and the pork neck, all around $34 - $36 each. All the dishes were fresh, flavourful and generously portioned. The dessert menu also has some interesting choices however our table were elegantly satisfied after our large mains to skip dessert. The bill for a table of 3 came to $57 per head including one bottle wine. For a modern asian 'treat' I would return.

Great for consistently tasty food.. We've eaten here about 7 or 8 times, and will go back. So many restaurants are in the "I will never go back" category, that is is a delight to find one like this.<br/>Seriously good, tasty, spicy food. The little betel leaf parcels and the scallops and pork belly are amazing.<br/>If you like food with taste, a little different from the normal Thai, go try it.

Fantastic asian!. Good, warm service. Everything reasonably priced. Little one had tender beef with sweet egg noodles. Had the starter tasting platter and liked the betel leaves. Soft-shelled crab was somewhat soggy but the green mango salad accompanying it hit the right spot. Terrific chai pana cotta and green tea granita, but didn't care too much about the accompanying jelly. Overall a great Sunday lunch despite the maudlin weather.
