Review Backstreet Espresso - Brisbane

This place is fantastic. The staff are lovely and really welcoming. Amazing service, great atmosphere and always greeted with a friendly face! I wouldn’t go anywhere else to get coffee. My favourite spot in Carina.

Best coffee! Friendly staff. Great atmosphere.

Love getting a coffee & the giant chocolate choc chip cookie here. Line up can be long at times, but the service is always friendly.

Backstreet Espresso is always a great place for coffee, whether on-the-go or enjoy it on a weekend! The owner always has a big smile and remembers everyone's names! Amazing service, always with a friendly greeting! Great coffee too, smooth and delicious. The complimentary cube of brownie is hard to savour for the whole coffee, melts in your mouth! Relaxing atmosphere, alot of spaces to sit and enjoy a coffee!

I had a yummy peanut butter bagel & cappuccino. The cappuccino was perfectly made & the bagel was delicious. Staff were very friendly. Definitely recommend!

My favourite coffee shop in Brisbane. Coffee is always delicious and hot, great strength and the staff are delightful. Very basic shop, so not a huge amount of food options, but great little bakery round the corner so excellent for a morning coffee and croissant. They serve the coffee up wit a tiny little brownie square, which is such a nice touch. ❤️

Favourite morning coffee stop. I go here with my mum everyday. Coffee is made quickly and perfectly. Staff are absolutely lovely and always put us in a good mood to start the day. Baby brownie bite on top of the coffee just adds to the greatness of this cafe! Love love love xxx

Cute little cafe tucked away in a quiet backstreet. Quite busy this morning but we barely waited 5 minutes for our coffee. Quick and efficient with delicious little sweets and savouries in the cabinet. Love love love the travelling cup idea! Will definitely be going back before our trip to Fiji to buy a coffee and take our cup on holiday with us. A half strength zymil mocha for me and chocolate nutella treat. It was a cross between a macaroon and brownie and it was heavenly! Crisp texture on the outside and chewy and gorgeous on the inside.

Love the vibe - almost like a travellers domain where everyone that comes in has a story. Would love to try the brekky here soon but if you want a delicious coffee and quick snack served by funny and friendly staff, try here.

This little place reminds me of my childhood, set out in the middle of suburban streets and well known by all who live across the road, down the road or a few blocks away. Great little place, greeted straight away and what a warm welcome it was. Great customer interaction!!!
The walls are full of photos of the backstreet espresso cup that went travelling around the world to all sorts of weird and wacky places with many different people, what a story the wall tells, great photos!
I wish more places would give sweet little goodies on top of the coffee like backstreet espresso, it seems to have died off among cafes. The brownie was so yum!! Coffee was brilliant, smooth and strong. got our coffee withing 2-3 minutes of ordering. Will absolutely be back

Had light brekkie at this café last Sunday morning. When I stepped in the shop, all the photos on the wall and counter attracted my gaze. I love the idea of showing so many people having their Elixir coffee at different places with smiling and satisfied facial expression. I then ordered my flat white and banana bread. I have to say that this café really offers good and sincere service. Whole team is working so smooth and proficient. The banana bread is the same thickness as the one that I had at 'Pump' the other day but they serve it with crispy outside and warm inside. It means that it is not the thickness causing the problem of preparation. Coffee is no doubt in serving me enough caffeine. Love this place.....

Think about where most of the highest-regarded coffee places tend to be in Brisbane for a moment. Not just the suburbs and parts of towns, but more so general location. Well, sometimes something has to buck the trend as per usual. You will find this little place off the main road and (because it has to buck trends, not hidden behind the main road) after a few more terms - hence its namesake. Despite how hidden it is, plenty of people have gotten the word that is out on the street.

Weekend schedule as per usual, time to do the grocery shopping but also the collateral agenda - find a new coffee place nearby. This one was one that both my dining buddy and I had heard a lot about, and had yet to visit. In addition to that, we have tried out the offspring cafe which was pretty good in itself. Also, the supermarket was in the general idea. So with all of these pieces being able to be added together, coffee time.

This is one of the few times in which I can say that I have been behind the counter. By saying this, some of the seating inside went aligned with the counter, and was more to the corner left as opposed to directly behind. Inside the cafe, it is really low key. The lighting is pretty low and dim and relies on natural sunlight coming from outside, there is quite a few tables - comfortable and also relaxed - for seating and a number of them are al fresco. It even includes a couch for the maximum relaxed feel. From looking at the photos, it certainly is not much to be seen; what matters though is the feeling of it. And from the ultra-friendly service, you can bet that is has a great atmosphere that is homely and inviting - it is why this place has such a number of ardent customers whom have become regulars.

On the side wall, there is an extensive gallery of tourist photos from around the world. In these photos, customers have taken a coffee cup with the blend logo to various places - sometimes even famous tourist attractions - as mementos. Some of them are quite effective, some are cute and it is more a game to see where you recognise. You can see it as an unusual version of a passport.

At Backstreet Espresso, the mainstay is without a doubt their coffee (it is in the name). In addition to that, they have a variety of sweets, and pastries to go with the coffee orders. The food orders are all simple and straightforward in composition. It is essentially an all-day breakfast menu, but don't expect any fry ups here. It is mostly bakery items, a few sandwiches and (if you find yourself here on the weekend) some special crepes.

The coffee beans that they use here is from Elixir. To me, this finds itself between all of the mid-carders and my favourites of the coffee blends that are around. In the hands of a really competent barista, it can be really good. Whether going on your way, or staying and having a seat, each coffee order comes with a sample of their signature brownie.

As per usual, the coffee order in which I had was a doppio. On the side, the brownie was delicious. Albeit just a bite size, it was a soft and delicious morsel that had a good amount of chocolate flavour to it. Certainly a full sized serving would be tantamount to heavenly. This coffee was also really good, it was smooth had that distinct flavour of coffee done well that is not bitter and somewhat near sweet in flavour. It was strong and just right in temperature - certainly hot, but nothing that will be too bad on your tongue. It was just right.

Even though I have now become a black coffee drinker in past months, sometimes when my dining buddy has a good cappuccino - a really good cappuccino - he just has to offer me to have a sip. This was one of those times. Granted, there are less aspects to make such a distinction between a decent and great cup with a simple black coffee as opposed to a more milky coffee like so. And to its credit, if I were to be drinking my cappucinos still - this would be the coffees that would look forward to each time. The milk was brilliantly textured, and the foam was creamy. It blended into the well-extracted espresso brilliantly. So, guess you can say two for two.

So, to have something on the side as per usual. Somehow, I ended up with a toasty (I do sometimes have a hard to understand voice) and it was a good one at that. Simple composition, egg, bacon, some spinach and lots of barbecue sauce with a side of tomato relish for spreading or dipping. As a snack size, this was substantially portioned. It was fairly messy to eat, with the thick, slightly fruity sauce practically oozing out of every cavity. Granted, as with the spinach, good as it was it seemed like an afterthought (to add some token freshness to a debatable item) and they did not put a lot of it in. However, it was still relatively fresh and add a bit of the cooked, wilted flavour that spinach has when not cooked for too long. The bacon might have benefited a bit more from some cooking, though please take that with a grain of salt as this is a person who really likes it to be very crispy. Adding onto that, the over-hard egg rounded it all up. This would not be as good as it was if it weren't for the choice of bread that they used, something quite substantial and chewy which escapes my mind at the moment. So, basically a simple thing done fairly well.

Why it is such a good coffee place, I can easily see. Not so much for food, but it can do well in conjunction with it. What really ties Backstreet Espresso as a whole is the people behind it, and the atmosphere that seeps through it. It is quirky without being phony. Definitely try it if you want a good coffee.

We love our local backstreet coffee shop! The coffee and staff are 10/10. Love the option of an extra shot for no extra charge. These guys nail it as far as my husband and I are concerned.

Went here for the first time. Had a long black which was smooth and hot. Also had a delicious brownie served with raspberry sauce however it didn't really need the scoop of ice cream on the side.

Great atmosphere and incredible service. The coffee is fantastic and the complimentary brownie is a lovely touch. We will definitely be back!

The best coffee ever (well so far...). Good service, great coffee, nice place to call into on the way to work. Recommend it without hesitation.

Best coffee south of the river. Easily the best coffee south of the Brisbane river with only one other coffee shop in Brisbane even coming close (Dandelion & Driftwood).

Best in Brisbane. I've been a customer of Backstreet Espresso since the day it opened and have been served a consistently great coffee with unfailingly friendly service almost every day since then.
I travel overseas quite frequently and find myself looking forward to the return home after trying (and usually failing) to find a coffee that can match the cappuccino I enjoy every morning here.
I can confidently recommend Backstreet Espresso to anyone looking for a great coffee, great service and great ambiance.

You Can Tell The Staff Love Their Jobs. What an amazingly friendly place to get a coffee. Went here to do some work whilst having a coffee and a bite to eat. The girls are all so friendly and you can tell they enjoy their jobs. Looking forward to my next chance to head down there.

Best coffee on the south side. Have been going here before everyone knew how good it was!! Most friendly staff. And the complimentary bonus are half the reason to go! The quiches are amazing. Food is designed for a quick something on a busy day.

Fantastic friendly atmosphere makes you feel a part of a family. Even on your first visit! Nice setup with heaps of character. Coffee wasn't te best in the world but definitely still good. Good selection of good and prices are very suitable. Highly recommend this neat little cafe!

Great for a takeaway coffee! Excellent coffee and service!

Awesome coffee.. You won't find many places better than this for a good coffee and great service. If you are a regular your name and coffee order will be remembered 9 times out of 10. Limited food only due to the premises not having a proper kitchen (who knows if we continue to support this great local, family business they may be able to provide a more extensive menu). The bacon and egg rolls are pretty great though. If you haven't been....GO

The service was friendly. We grabbed two takeaway coffees. The coffees come with a little complementary brownie. We will definitely return to try their food menu :-),

Listed on urban spoon as a breakfast menu. Breakfast items on display in a glass case out the front. If you are looking for a nice breakfast don't go out of your way for this place.

Diana. Was definately blown away by the service & friendly welcome we received at this little social hub, was just like returning home. The coffee was great & nothing was too much trouble for the barista, water for the pooch, water for us, magazines etc. The coffee even came with a fabulous sample of their brownies, what a home away from home!

Hands down, best espresso coffee in the area. Carindale/carina is awful as far as espresso is concerned and backstreet is truly the start of a consistent, good espresso coffee in the area.
Jaybell
Very personable friendly service - like you're a guest in their home! Which is great difference to the dull humourless chain places - need more veg and gluten free options though please for snacks.
Ashleigh
Great coffee and truly lovely owner, worth a trip for the service alone.

Michael and Courtney provide a wonderful personal and attentive service. Always a smile and a friendly word for every customer. And a wonderfully decadent piece of brownie with every drink. Highly recommended

each time I've been served a great cup of coffee.

very smooth and rich Elixir coffee, there's a simple range of in house or locally made cakes, wraps and sandwiches on offer. I usually just have coffee when we go out but on one visit, we decided to split a Bacon and Egg Turkish. Big Mistake! Now, we have to have one every time we visit. Along with bacon, egg and spinach is the most delicious home made tomato relish I think I have ever had. Not too sweet, with discernible pieces of onion, spices and even sultanas, this sauce elevates the simple roll
