As great as ever!! The Owner is still the same sweetie as when he opened the shop 5 yrs ago. He continued to remember me as a repeat customer for all these years. The Noodles are my fav though have shrunk in size so I got the Roti and Dhal for something different which was perfect!! Perfect size for an average/ small eater but prices have changed from this website since the beginning of the year which I had forgotten about. Cash only. So I told the owner got a new menu.Grace Lung
I do love this place. It's pretty hard to get a seat on the weekends though. I tend to come weekdays for lunch. Nice 'wok hey' and yummy aromas coming from the kitchen.
I've enjoyed basically everything I've had here. Good heat on the dishes which you can ask to make mild. Penang Har Mee is my favorite. I also like to try the kueh.
The only downside is that it is a little pricer for a regular lunch for me. Pushing $14 per dish I personally find it hard to eat here often as I try to find places with lunch specials. But when I'm here I'm glad I came back. I'm not Malaysian or even been to Penang but it's definitely to my personal taste.
There is a public toilet which doesn't require a key near the Korean BBQ place... Relatively clean on my visit. There's a disabled toilet but being locked I couldn't see if there was a baby change table.
Great option for Malaysian food. My husband is Malaysian and we both miss authentic food in Brisbane.
As per other reviews - yes I agree - best Kway Teow in Brisbane - nice char to the noodle. I just wish the noodles were wider and there was a bit more sausage.
Prawn Mee was nice and tasty. Food comes out quick and hot. It's literally a hole in the wall so reduce your expectations - but who needs walls when the food is this yum!
They also have Kueh but it sells out quickly.
Still - I'll be back!!

After planning to dine at Tobaki Korean BBQ my brother-in-law says he would prefer to dine at Taste of Penang which is 20 metres away. We sit at a vacant table and I order five dishes to try.
It is quite busy tonight and it is 30 minutes before the Har Mee (Prawn Noodle) and Char Kueh Teow are served. Unlike my last meal here, the Har Mee serving is once again a "full" bowl of noodles. Rating: 4.5/5.0
The Char Kueh Teow serving is 30% larger than last month's serving. And the noodles are delicious with the fragrant "wok hei" aroma.
Rating: 5.0/5.0
The Lobak tonight is the most authentic I have tasted in Brisbane.
Rating: 4.5/5.0
The Chicken Satay is well seasoned and is tender and flavoursome and complemented with a delicious peanut sauce.
Rating: 4.5/5.0
The Curry Chicken & Potato Curry Puffs are well made and flavoursome. Problem is there was no chicken but heaps of potato in the filling.
Rating: 3.5/5.0
Overall a most satisfying $51 meal for two people. I ask Management to maintain a decent serving size if you would like to retain your regular customers. The overall rating increases from 4.0 to 4.50/5.00
Mid-June 2017
It's been six months since my last visit to Taste of Penang. Today being Brisbane's third consecutive cold wet day I wanted my Mum to get out of the house and have a walkabout. So we arrived at 12.30pm and it was obvious the rain was keeping diners away as only half the tables were occupied.
Our favourites here are the Char Kueh Teow (Fried Flat Rice Noodles) and the Har Mee (Prawn Noodle Soup). Mum also likes the Otak-Otak, a Nyonya spiced steamed scrambled egg with herbs and pieces of fish.
The Char Kueh Teow arrived after 10 minutes. It was good, however, the serving had reduced by 20% since my last visit. The Har Mee was next and this soup noodle only filled 70% of the bowl. Though it tasted fine I was disappointed by this small serving. Despite being still hungry I gave the Otak-Otak to my Mum to fill up.
I believe these noodle dishes at Mama Malaya are of the same standard but the servings there are much larger. So for now its adios Taste of Penang until your serving size improves. My rating for this restaurant reduces from 4.5 to 4.0
This is our go to place for Malaysian cuisine on the south side now. If you feel like some Asian street food, this is the place to be.
Their Penang Kuey Teow is one of the best Kuey Teow I've had. You can choose how spicy you want the dish to be, which is really important. I always order mine as medium hot, as I think this gives the noodles enough kick while not being overpoweringly hot to the point that you can't taste any other flavour. One of the best things I love about their kuey teow is the temperature they serve it in. Every time we eat there it's always really hot, as if you are eating off the wok. You can also tell from the fragrance and taste that the food was fried at a hot enough temperature. While everything is served hot, nothing ever tastes overcooked. Bean sprouts are always crispy. Noodles never stick together. They really know how to do their stir-frys!
Another dish I also like to order (mostly in the evenings or on a cool day) is their Penang Har Mee, which is prawn noodle soup. The broth is full of flavour and together with the noodles is the ultimate comfort food in winter. If you love prawn, you will enjoy this.
Their roti is also something I'd recommend if you like Malaysian curry. However, it may not be filling enough for some as the serving size is not that big. The curry sauce is delicious and if you have some leftover, they go really well with any leftover rice as a second meal lol
Counter service. Alfresco dining (street food).
The only inconvenience with this place is they only take cash (like a lot of Asian restaurants here). So make sure you have enough cash before you visit.
I have been waiting patiently to try this place ever since reading Joe K's appraisal since I have been looking for good Malaysian food in Brisbane for a while.
So a group of us went tonight and we ordered the curry puffs, satay chicken, satay beef, nasi lemak with chicken curry, beef rendang and sambal prawns, char kway teow and mee goreng.
In general, the flavours of the dishes were good. Reminiscent of Malaysian food I have had in Malaysia. If you are looking for some real Malaysian flavoured food, this is one of the few places in Brisbane that gets close.
The satay chicken, chicken curry, beef rendang and char kway teow in particular were very good. Not as impressed with the coconut rice and satay beef
I was glad that their hot was actually reasonably hot and not just a mild burn.
One negative is how oily the food is, but that is part and parcel of Malaysian hawker food, and service is somewhat lacklustre.
Otherwise, it was quite a good dinner.
We had the Char Kwey Teow (CKT) and the Chee Cheung Fun. The Chee Cheung Fun was a dish which included steamed rice rolls served with sweet sauce and shrimp paste sprinkle with dried shallots and sesame seeds.💎This shop may be a small one but the food here surly is delicious!! A hidden gem in Runcorn!💎
It looks like Malaysian cuisine style restaurants are popping out in Brisbane recently, which I have yet to visit. Well, Taste of Penang (ToP) has been my favourite Malaysian restaurant to date, and even better, when it is specialising in Penang's food (my hometown!). Do not expect ToP to be a five-star quality restaurant when you first arrive. The tables and fold-chairs are arranged outside the corridor, and ordering is make simple by filling up the paper menu.
My Malaysian mate brought me there, saying that the fried kuey teow there was the best but other dishes were so so. Penang Fried Kuey Teow was as yummy as he had recommended. The Har Mee, prawn noodle soup, was not too bad as we could taste the natural sweetness of prawn broth. I myself didn't like it much for the fact that there was no vegetable-just noodle and prawns. Chee Cheong Fun, steamed rice rolls with sweet sauce and shrimp paste, was quite nice; somehow, it was way too sweet for me. Nasi Lekmak with prawn sambal was pretty good, and Lobak, deep fried five spice pork rolls were alright too. Overall the food was acceptable and the prices were very reasonable. If adding up a bit of better service rather than just a counter service and nicer ambience, this place could bring more customers.
Is it the best char keuy teow ive ever eaten, not really. But is it good enough? Yes it is. It's unfair on them because I love chat keuy teow because of the semi-raw blood cockles that are quite rare here in Aus.
We ordered the vegetarian spring rolls and curry puffs as well.
None of them were out of this world amazing. But I'm intrigued to try the other dishes, hopefully I time it right in future and get to eat a bowl of Assam laksa
In saying that, if I lived close by, this would definitely be a regular takeaway joint
Very homey Malaysian style foood. Definitely the best tasting char kuey teow (closest taste to stuff u find in malaysia) you can find in brisbane. Just a warning when you order the level of spicyness tjings could get really hot.
Located at the same shopping village as Tobaki is a little gem of Malaysian restaurant - Taste of Penang. I love the Deep Fried Tofu which goes perfectly with the sweet chiili sauce. The a-must ordered dishes are Penang Har Mee and Penang Fried Kuey Teow. They remind me the time that I had the hawker food at "Lot 10" and local Kopi Den at KL in last April. Taste of the broth from the Har Mee, Chinese sausage and the flat noodles of Kuey Teow with dark sauce reflect the specific authenticity of the food that they are serving. Thank you for that unforgettable experience.
I came here with some friends on a Saturday night but even then the food came out fast and was absolutely amazing. I'd definitely recommend the char keow teow ( pretty sure that's not how you spell it but sounds like that). Staff are quite friendly too, only thing is that they try and get rid of everyone by 9 which was too early for us as we only got there at 8!
Great Beef Rendang! You can choose the level of spicy.
Quick, tasty & enthusiastic.. Prompt service, delicious food, happy and proud staff.
Great food. Chee Cheong Fun, deep fried tofu are always my favourite. They tasted sooooo good. Char kwei toew is what everyone loves there. The service was quick too, although we went there the other day it was a bit slow due to a large amount of customers. The waitstaff said they didn't expect that many people that day so they couldn't handle as good as usual, well its understandable so it's okay.
Will be back again!
Very nice foods! Authentic! We told the chef that we do not have to go back to Penang anymore because they have the best Penang foods! Looking forward for Asam laksa !
Great mee goreng. Been having the char kway teow here for the past few months..but last week we decided to try something different, we had mee goreng and Elton really impressed us with his mee goreng..
It is not often that one come across one of the many Asian restaurants in sunnybank that shows a genuine care and dedication to the tradition and taste of the food it serves. I knew I found such a gem as soon as I took the first taste of the deep colored broth of Taste of Penang's Penang Har Mee(prawn noodle soup). It was deeply infused with the taste and aroma of prawn and fried garlic but yet was easy to the palate, unlike most Sunnybank restaurants which endows their food with so much MSG that makes everything bland and uninteresting. It is one of those food that you can taste tradition and respect to the food being made as the soup swirls in your mouth. I was so impressed that I then ordered the Lorbak for take away, as well as trying the Malaysian tea on the spot. Oh my. Like the other reviewer said it was to die for.
This place is not fancy, it has next to no decor but it has so much soul in its food that it made me feel glad I had experienced it at least once in my life.
The food is nice the Malaysian tea is exquisite!! Lives it~
Had the penang char kway teow and a few side dishes. The char kway teow is easily the best I've had in Brisbane. Well cooked and SUPER tasty. Prices were very affordable and the owner/cook was really friendly and helpful. Beware though when choosing the spicyness of the dish. Mild is enough zing for those with decent tolerance.
Good Food. Had their Penang fried noodle. Very tasty... big portion. Love their satay. Can't find any better food around.

Not too often in this town would i say "drip the laksa into my veins" to the chef but in this case I would. The menu is limited but enough. CKT is good too although I'd avoid their egg hofun.
Worth Second Visit!. I went there once quite sometime ago, really impressed by their prawn mee, the broth/soup is of great flavours.
Despite it's a little bit pricey and the portion is smaller than normal Australian size (Normal Asian portion), it worths second visit.
their char kway teow is my friends' favorite :)
Real decent place for Malaysian food. Servings are a bit small compared to the ones in Sunnybank but they make it up for the taste. Must try the Char Kway Teow.
Authentic Malay food. We ordered the Penang chee cheong fun, kuey teow and nasi lemak with curry chicken. The food was enjoyable and full of authentic flavours. Not very big portions compared with Sunnybank standards but still filling. The customer service was very friendly and attentive.
Certified Authentic. Prawn Noodles and Char Koay Teows are must-tries.
You could taste the sweetness and freshness of the prawns in the the prawn noodles broth.
Char koay teow was really legit as well, although lacking in cockles.
Must try Malaysian food joint. Certified authentic. Full stop.
The closest char koay teow you can ever find in brisbane and I am comparing with the Penang char koay teow!! It is awesome. Must try the Chee Cheong fun as well!!! A must go for penangites who miss home food!!
Small place, fast service. Chee cheong fun and tofu goreng both good and authentic. Nasi lemak chicken curry acceptable but have tasted better elsewhere in Sunnybank. Reasonable place. 7/10
Top Stuff!. Definitely tops my list of authentic singapore/malaysian type cuisine. The penang har mee, kway teow, chee cheong fun, tauhu goreng are the list of favourites among me and my friends. The small shop area (i.e. limited seats) is a slight let down. I suppose once business picks even more, probably worth upgrading to a bigger venue!
Not open sundays??. It makes baby jesus cry
Yum... We love the food from TOP especially the Char Koay Teow which tastes quite similar to what you find in Penang, Chee Cheong Fun which I haven't eaten anywhere else in Brisbane probably bcoz it's not available anywhere else, Char Hor Fun which is pretty similar, Yee Mee, Lor Bak, Fried Tofu, Beef Rendang and Wan Than Mee! As I'm a Penangite and food lover, in my opinion this is a place you wouldn't want to miss!! :)
Yummylicioussssssss MAS food!!!. This is a must try restaurant!!! Absolutely Yummylicious food!!! They serve up very authentic Penang (Malaysian) food. The main dishes (nasi lemak, rendang, char kwuay teow...etc.), entrees (lobak : highly recommended*...etc.), drinks (lemon tea, teh tarik...etc). Dishes are all superbly delicious. Most of all, they have very reasonable pricing. It gives you a slight "Mamak" (Malaysian Hawker) food ambience too. Looking for a lunch or dinner venue, and looking for reasonable pricing + delicious food, this is it, Taste of Penang is the way to go. Advisable to make reservations, as they are often very busy because their dishes are absolutely 2 thumbs up!! GO Taste of Penang!!
The Best Malaysian. Congratulations to the staff at Taste of Penang! I'm a foodie who grew up in a family who ran and owned two malaysian restaurants in Brisbane during the 80's & early 90's. Having travelled the world and tried malaysian restaurants from Penang, Malacca, KL (Malaysia), Sydney (Mamak) to Chicago & New York, I can honestly say Taste of Penang is one of the best - certainly the best Malaysian food (although a little limited in regards to the menu) in Brisbane at the moment. My previous favourite was Little Singapore in Sunnybank & the city, however, the quality, serving size and value for money out guns Little Singapore. Please understand I still love Little Singapore interms of the variety, however, dish vs dish - the char kway teow and the lorbak are stand outs at ToP! i also enjoyed the Rendang Nasi Lemak... I'm not a great a fan Laksa's generally, so I tend to stay away from Laksa's in malaysian restaurants - (nothing can beat my Dad's laksa). I have been to the restaurant on 5 occasions (3 eat in and 2 takeaways) within 4 weeks of its opening and I highly recommend this restaurant, however, due to the size of the kitchen - I wonder if they can handle large crowds?? Let's see... let the crowds come! My only "complaint" to the management - please bring in credit card facilities so i can spend more!
This is the best Malaysian in Brisbane! I took my mother who is a Penang native and she described the food as authentic. The owner and chef Elton is passionate about food, coming out to the dining room to ask if we wanted hot or Malaysian hot! Word for the wise don't get Malaysian hot! The restaurant is nothing flash, but what it lacks in style it makes up in flavor. It is also very reasonable. Try the home made Malaysian cakes as well! I have posted 4 photos of the dishes we sampled when we visited, roti canai, char Kway teoh, nasi lemak and Lobak. Do yourself a favour and give this place a go! About time we got a decent Malaysian restaurant!

The most authentic Malaysian food I have ever had in Brisbane!!! My favorite is te lorbak, fried Kuey teow, prawn mee. The kuih-kuih are 'oh so delicious'.
Best authentic malaysian food. I'm a lover of Malaysian / Singapore food, been to all other restaurants that you can name in Brisbane and this is the most authentic and the best! Must tries are fried kway teow, chee cheong fan, nasi lemak with beef redang and har mee. Friendly chef and staff! I'm always returning every other day for the food, makes me think of home. A hidden gem!
I ordered a teh tarik for my drink, the cold version! It's famed as being the national drink of Malaysia, a strong black tea with sweetened condensed milk added and poured repeatedly between two cups for a frothy top. I was a little surprised when it came out in a bubble tea container, but that was the flavour I was expecting when I tried it! A very strong and slightly ginger flavoured black tea with the sweetness of condensed milk. I ended up shaking the container to get the bubble effect I wanted.
Taste of Penang is located in the shopping centre next to Runcorn Tavern. As we walked in, we could smell the aroma of ‘hawker food’ lingering in the air. The atmosphere was enhanced by the Penang Food Documentary showing on TV that featured the famous Gurney Drive.
Penang has the most authentic Malaysian food and I always miss the beautiful stirred fried noodles Char Kway Teow! Tonight the lovely couple Mr and Mrs J invited us to this little restaurant at Runcorn called “Taste of Penang” and I am really grateful to have such a wonderful meal with them! The food is authentic and delicioux! Yum Yum!
Any Malaysian spending longer than 3 months in a foreign county will have their heads going crazy for some food from home.
Was I satiated? Beyond words.
Taste of penang serves authentic Malaysian food. No kidding. Don't let its appearance of dull/simple decor fool you. It's the magic going on in the kitchen that matters.
I commute 30km to this place regularly and waltz down memory lane while I chug on their noodles and rice dishes.
To be fair, not everything is spectacular. I've had better nasi lemak elsewhere. But CKT here is definitely the bomb.
Friendly boss and yummy char kuay Teow that is recommended to me by a local Penang Friend! Been bringing my family and friends ever since! Cravings will always be satisfied!
Being a Penangite who has been in Brisbane for more than 5 years, I always crave and try to find food that is similar to hometown.
Char Koay Teow, Mee Goreng and Pulut Tatal were very close to what you can get in Penang. Not to mention, the level of spiciness is always spot on (I always get the hot level, yummy!!)
I would definitely recommend any Malaysians who are craving for good Malaysian food to come here! =)
UPDATE: it has moved to toowong.
The char kuey teow (fried kiey teow), curry puff, lobak (deep fried pork mince roll), and chee cheong fun (rolled rice sheets) are really good and authentic! Taste much better than the random hawker stalls back home. The really good Penang ones are still slightly better but this is not far from it! The only thing to note is that during the busy periods the quality does drop so come during weeknights. They accept cash only and charge extra 30 cents/set for takeaway containers.
Very authentic Penang style food, closest thing you can get for Penang food in Brisbane. The char kuay teow and the Mee goreng are awesome. The Chee cheong fun and the lor bak are also both really well made
Excellent. Can only vouch for the Nasi lemak beef rendang and roti with beef rendang but both were delicious. Service was quick and friendly. I will be coming back and will update review after more dishes. Char Kuey teow looks great and is next on my list.
