As great as ever!! The Owner is still the same sweetie as when he opened the shop 5 yrs ago. He continued to remember me as a repeat customer for all these years. The Noodles are my fav though have shrunk in size so I got the Roti and Dhal for something different which was perfect!! Perfect size for an average/ small eater but prices have changed from this website since the beginning of the year which I had forgotten about. Cash only. So I told the owner got a new menu.Grace Lung

I do love this place. It's pretty hard to get a seat on the weekends though. I tend to come weekdays for lunch. Nice 'wok hey' and yummy aromas coming from the kitchen.

I've enjoyed basically everything I've had here. Good heat on the dishes which you can ask to make mild. Penang Har Mee is my favorite. I also like to try the kueh.

The only downside is that it is a little pricer for a regular lunch for me. Pushing $14 per dish I personally find it hard to eat here often as I try to find places with lunch specials. But when I'm here I'm glad I came back. I'm not Malaysian or even been to Penang but it's definitely to my personal taste.

There is a public toilet which doesn't require a key near the Korean BBQ place... Relatively clean on my visit. There's a disabled toilet but being locked I couldn't see if there was a baby change table.

Great option for Malaysian food. My husband is Malaysian and we both miss authentic food in Brisbane.

As per other reviews - yes I agree - best Kway Teow in Brisbane - nice char to the noodle. I just wish the noodles were wider and there was a bit more sausage.

Prawn Mee was nice and tasty. Food comes out quick and hot. It's literally a hole in the wall so reduce your expectations - but who needs walls when the food is this yum!

They also have Kueh but it sells out quickly.

Still - I'll be back!!

After planning to dine at Tobaki Korean BBQ my brother-in-law says he would prefer to dine at Taste of Penang which is 20 metres away. We sit at a vacant table and I order five dishes to try.

It is quite busy tonight and it is 30 minutes before the Har Mee (Prawn Noodle) and Char Kueh Teow are served. Unlike my last meal here, the Har Mee serving is once again a "full" bowl of noodles. Rating: 4.5/5.0
The Char Kueh Teow serving is 30% larger than last month's serving. And the noodles are delicious with the fragrant "wok hei" aroma.
Rating: 5.0/5.0
The Lobak tonight is the most authentic I have tasted in Brisbane.
Rating: 4.5/5.0
The Chicken Satay is well seasoned and is tender and flavoursome and complemented with a delicious peanut sauce.
Rating: 4.5/5.0
The Curry Chicken & Potato Curry Puffs are well made and flavoursome. Problem is there was no chicken but heaps of potato in the filling.
Rating: 3.5/5.0

Overall a most satisfying $51 meal for two people. I ask Management to maintain a decent serving size if you would like to retain your regular customers. The overall rating increases from 4.0 to 4.50/5.00

Mid-June 2017

It's been six months since my last visit to Taste of Penang. Today being Brisbane's third consecutive cold wet day I wanted my Mum to get out of the house and have a walkabout. So we arrived at 12.30pm and it was obvious the rain was keeping diners away as only half the tables were occupied.

Our favourites here are the Char Kueh Teow (Fried Flat Rice Noodles) and the Har Mee (Prawn Noodle Soup). Mum also likes the Otak-Otak, a Nyonya spiced steamed scrambled egg with herbs and pieces of fish.

The Char Kueh Teow arrived after 10 minutes. It was good, however, the serving had reduced by 20% since my last visit. The Har Mee was next and this soup noodle only filled 70% of the bowl. Though it tasted fine I was disappointed by this small serving. Despite being still hungry I gave the Otak-Otak to my Mum to fill up.

I believe these noodle dishes at Mama Malaya are of the same standard but the servings there are much larger. So for now its adios Taste of Penang until your serving size improves. My rating for this restaurant reduces from 4.5 to 4.0

This is our go to place for Malaysian cuisine on the south side now. If you feel like some Asian street food, this is the place to be.

Their Penang Kuey Teow is one of the best Kuey Teow I've had. You can choose how spicy you want the dish to be, which is really important. I always order mine as medium hot, as I think this gives the noodles enough kick while not being overpoweringly hot to the point that you can't taste any other flavour. One of the best things I love about their kuey teow is the temperature they serve it in. Every time we eat there it's always really hot, as if you are eating off the wok. You can also tell from the fragrance and taste that the food was fried at a hot enough temperature. While everything is served hot, nothing ever tastes overcooked. Bean sprouts are always crispy. Noodles never stick together. They really know how to do their stir-frys!

Another dish I also like to order (mostly in the evenings or on a cool day) is their Penang Har Mee, which is prawn noodle soup. The broth is full of flavour and together with the noodles is the ultimate comfort food in winter. If you love prawn, you will enjoy this.

Their roti is also something I'd recommend if you like Malaysian curry. However, it may not be filling enough for some as the serving size is not that big. The curry sauce is delicious and if you have some leftover, they go really well with any leftover rice as a second meal lol

Counter service. Alfresco dining (street food).

The only inconvenience with this place is they only take cash (like a lot of Asian restaurants here). So make sure you have enough cash before you visit.

I have been waiting patiently to try this place ever since reading Joe K's appraisal since I have been looking for good Malaysian food in Brisbane for a while.
So a group of us went tonight and we ordered the curry puffs, satay chicken, satay beef, nasi lemak with chicken curry, beef rendang and sambal prawns, char kway teow and mee goreng.
In general, the flavours of the dishes were good. Reminiscent of Malaysian food I have had in Malaysia. If you are looking for some real Malaysian flavoured food, this is one of the few places in Brisbane that gets close.
The satay chicken, chicken curry, beef rendang and char kway teow in particular were very good. Not as impressed with the coconut rice and satay beef
I was glad that their hot was actually reasonably hot and not just a mild burn.
One negative is how oily the food is, but that is part and parcel of Malaysian hawker food,  and service is somewhat lacklustre.
Otherwise, it was quite a good dinner.

We had the Char Kwey Teow (CKT) and the Chee Cheung Fun. The Chee Cheung Fun was a dish which included steamed rice rolls served with sweet sauce and shrimp paste sprinkle with dried shallots and sesame seeds.💎This shop may be a small one but the food here surly is delicious!! A hidden gem in Runcorn!💎

It looks like Malaysian cuisine style restaurants are popping out in Brisbane recently, which I have yet to visit. Well, Taste of Penang (ToP) has been my favourite Malaysian restaurant to date, and even better, when it is specialising in Penang's food (my hometown!). Do not expect ToP to be a five-star quality restaurant when you first arrive. The tables and fold-chairs are arranged outside the corridor, and ordering is make simple by filling up the paper menu.

My Malaysian mate brought me there, saying that the fried kuey teow there was the best but other dishes were so so. Penang Fried Kuey Teow was as yummy as he had recommended. The Har Mee, prawn noodle soup, was not too bad as we could taste the natural sweetness of prawn broth. I myself didn't like it much for the fact that there was no vegetable-just noodle and prawns. Chee Cheong Fun, steamed rice rolls with sweet sauce and shrimp paste, was quite nice; somehow, it was way too sweet for me. Nasi Lekmak with prawn sambal was pretty good, and Lobak, deep fried five spice pork rolls were alright too. Overall the food was acceptable and the prices were very reasonable. If adding up a bit of better service rather than just a counter service and nicer ambience, this place could bring more customers.

Is it the best char keuy teow ive ever eaten, not really. But is it good enough? Yes it is. It's unfair on them because I love chat keuy teow because of the semi-raw blood cockles that are quite rare here in Aus.

We ordered the vegetarian spring rolls and curry puffs as well.

None of them were out of this world amazing. But I'm intrigued to try the other dishes, hopefully I time it right in future and get to eat a bowl of Assam laksa

In saying that, if I lived close by, this would definitely be a regular takeaway joint

Any Malaysian spending longer than 3 months in a foreign county will have their heads going crazy for some food from home. Was I satiated? Beyond words. Taste of penang serves authentic Malaysian food. No kidding. Don't let its appearance of dull/simple decor fool you. It's the magic going on in the kitchen that matters. I commute 30km to this place regularly and waltz down memory lane while I chug on their noodles and rice dishes. To be fair, not everything is spectacular. I've had better nasi lemak elsewhere. But CKT here is definitely the bomb.

Being a Penangite who has been in Brisbane for more than 5 years, I always crave and try to find food that is similar to hometown. Char Koay Teow, Mee Goreng and Pulut Tatal were very close to what you can get in Penang. Not to mention, the level of spiciness is always spot on (I always get the hot level, yummy!!) I would definitely recommend any Malaysians who are craving for good Malaysian food to come here! =) UPDATE: it has moved to toowong.

The char kuey teow (fried kiey teow), curry puff, lobak (deep fried pork mince roll), and chee cheong fun (rolled rice sheets) are really good and authentic! Taste much better than the random hawker stalls back home. The really good Penang ones are still slightly better but this is not far from it! The only thing to note is that during the busy periods the quality does drop so come during weeknights. They accept cash only and charge extra 30 cents/set for takeaway containers.

Very authentic Penang style food, closest thing you can get for Penang food in Brisbane. The char kuay teow and the Mee goreng are awesome. The Chee cheong fun and the lor bak are also both really well made

Excellent. Can only vouch for the Nasi lemak beef rendang and roti with beef rendang but both were delicious. Service was quick and friendly. I will be coming back and will update review after more dishes. Char Kuey teow looks great and is next on my list.
