Review Ho Choi Restaurant - Brisbane

WR Rodwell
Over the decades, Ho Choi has proven to be a good old-style reliable Chinese restaurant. In fact, it's become something of a suburban Moorooka institution since being established in 1966. The reasonably priced food is always delicious and the service is obligingly friendly.

Always wanted to try this place as it is close to our new house, finally got the chance today and certainly not disappoint. Good stir fry technique which we call 'wok-hei' (wok-air) in Cantonese, not every Chinese restaurant can do it and it's a gem when you find one. The Singapore noodles and Chow Mein was good, stir fry beef hor fun and fried rice not dry enough but better than most places already. Would highly recommend if you want an authentic Chinese food experience.

Not only the best Chinese food but also my all time favourite. Staff are absolutely amazing and the food is to die for in my personal, and very professional opinion (I’ve eaten a lot of food in my time). My family has been getting takeaway here for as long as I can remember and have not once been disappointed. Super consistent and always delicious. If I could give 10 stars I would.

My family has been eating from Ho Choi for the past 15-20 years.. The food is exceptional and the staff are super friendly. Really reasonable price per dish with big serves so plenty of leftovers for the next day !😜😜 Our favourites are Ma Po Tofu and Honey chicken (it’s always crunchy and dripping with honey).. You may have to wait a while for food when they’re busy on Friday and Saturday nights, but it’s well worth the wait! Huge thank you to Edmund, Kimberley, Karen and the team for always serving delicious food and taking care of us!

Hadn't tried Ho Choi for a few years, ordered Beef and Black Bean. Beef strips weren't cut up properly, lots of big pieces. Small steamed rice was $3.50(!), It was all in big lumps & extremely dry. A real shame compared to the last time I ordered from Ho Choi.

So fortunate that this is our local Chinese restaurant. I’ve been going to the Ho Choi since the early 80’s and they never disappoint. Nothing beats a traditional family operation.

The best Chinese in Brisbane!! My wife and I love it here. Friendly and happy staff. Food is always fresh and tasty and the balance of flavours is just perfect. I always get the curry puffs, lemon chicken and special fried rice no seafood. I have never been disappointed!

Recently moved to the area and have had a couple of take outs from Hoi Choi. Beautiful, fresh flavoursome food. I’m looking forward going for dinner soon.

I genuinely do not understand why this place has such a good rating. The food here was good 15+ years ago so I decided to try it again while being back in Brisbane, and what a mistake! For $55, I certainly expected more! The batter on the honey prawns was soggy (not crunchy) and I counted six sesame seeds over just two of them; the braised chicken with vegetable was bland - the thick off-white sauce had absolutely no flavour (not even garlic!); the fried rice was average, and the most disappointing of all were the undercooked dim sims, which I was actually really looking forward to. They may or may not be the reason I had stomach cramps through the night after eating one and a half before realising! I am so disappointed that this cost $55 and even more disappointed that a once brilliant little restaurant is now making food like this. I have had way better and for a fraction of this price. I am very sad to say, I won’t be returning.

Came here on a quiet Monday evening. The dining area was quiet; however the take away orders were constant. We ordered honey chicken and lemon chicken. Quite nice, but very sweet. Service was quick and friendly. Would come here again.

Awesome food and even better service. Apparently this is the oldest Chinese restaurant in Brisbane? Dine in is just as good as takeaway. Highly recommend!

I came in with my father who was in a wheelchair, and with his partner. We ordered drinks, a bottle of wine and a bottle of coke! My father asked a simple question of whether we could get the Banquet A for three people rather than 4! The Waiter said of course meaning for $30 per head for three people, just not the Banquet B! Fair enough we said! We also said that we would buy meals individually if they could not do the banquet for us, but were assured they could! When we were close to finished the meal and ready for dessert the waiter who I assume was the owner came out and said, ok you full you don't want dessert, we said yes we do please. This is after asking if we could get some containers to take away the food we had not eaten! We finished our desserts and when I went to pay the bill I was told that we are being charged for the full 4 people for the banquet, which we had been assured was not the case! I paid even though I was disgusted, especially that we only received entrée for three people not 4, so they have made money out of us as well as being dishonest, I am disgusted in the manner of which they conducted business. We were happy to order individual meals! Their San Choi bao was completely flavourless, and so was their chicken and sweet corn soup. I have also never had sweet and sour pork with bones still in.

Tonight we decided to have take away, place of choice was Ho Choi, probably the best chinese in the area and surrounding.

Place is always busy so best to order early as it can take up to 25 mins to pick up. Staff are friendly and service is prompt. Parking there are 4 parks for pick ups and a few street parks.

We ordered the special fried rice, fried dim sims, bbq pork spare ribs and prawn crackers. Plenty of food for 2.5 people.

We were all happy after our meal.

This is not the first time or last time we will eat here. Might have to one day try the dine in option.

We've been to this establishment many times for takeaway and dining in. Great food, friendly family operators in a relaxed and pleasant environment. Even the prices are very reasonable.

The family has operated this business for many decades and are an absolute favourite for many people we know.

We'll be back many times more!

Great Chinese food . Ho Choi is a Moorooka icon. Host Edmond is nicknamed Edmond the Legend. Ask for him by name. Top bloke . Ideal suburban take - away.

Ho Choi seems to have been in Moorooka forever. When I first moved into the area a few years ago, we tried there as it is always busy when driving past and it is relatively priced. It started off strong, with the meals being great to good. But as time had passed, the quality just did not seem to be there. At times the meals seemed to lack flavour and, in my opinion, have a lot of MSG. I could be wrong. So after a few less than average meals we decided to give Ho Choi a break. To see other people if you will!

After about 12 months, we ran back into each other. Unsure what we wanted one night, we decided to give Ho Choi another go. I guess there was something still fluttering in our hearts. Plus, it is amazing how hard it is to find a good Chinese restaurant these days. Anyway, we ordered and got our meals takeaway. There were no less people waiting for meals as per usual. The meals were good, but there was not that freshness and great taste it used to be, though it was still a good meal. But you could feel something was missing . You lie to yourself, but you know it is there. So alas, a month and bit later we decided to have Ho Choi again. This is were the inconsistency happens. The meals were average. They weren't bad, just average. This is where you know you should have listened to yourself so you don't get hurt.

Ho Choi is a good all rounder Chinese restaurant in Moorooka, always willing to be there for you but just does not bring that something special and is terribly flakey. However, I think it is good to frequent there that every once and a while when no one else is doing it for you.

I really enjoyed this Chinese restaurant! Doesn't look like much in the decor, however food was wonderful and staff were so polite. The honey prawns, fried rice and Mongolian lamb were all absolutely delightful! Would recommend.

Reviewed this little restaurant a while ago - lovely food and kind staff, however recently had a 'take away' from here (the first time) and I have to say terrible! all very bland except for one dish - could not eat the long soup just ended up throwing it out and the prawns in the 2nd main (frozen small and tasteless) I have never had prawns like this in any Chinese dish from any Chinese Restaurant. Will try again 'eat in'.

I have to mention that this is the 2nd restaurant in Tarragindi where 'eat in' and 'take way' are two very different experiences!

We were amazed at the taste and quality of the Chinese dishes, produced on a quiet Wednesday night.

If you can get past the 70s decor, you will taste the definitive version of Chinese dishes. Fresh ingredients, great technique, excellent balance of flavours! Even the mixed entree was a highlight, delicate pastry, lightly fried, tasty fillings, brilliant!

Very happy to have discovered a hidden gem behind the red velvet curtains at this Moorooka restaurant.

Ho Choi is our awesome local Chinese Restaurant. Great service and value for money and the food is always so fresh. If you are not a local, this place is definitely worth the drive for either take-away or to dine in. I would recommend making a booking if dining in or phoning ahead for take-away as it is extremely popular with the locals!

Great place to eat. I have lived in Tarragindi for 10+ years and this is our local chinese takeaway restaurant and it has been brilliant the entire time. Always have a lovely meal. We have never been disappointed whether eating in or taking away they are consistently great.

This is our regular Chinese restaurant, the Shandy's are great value and filling and the spring rolls are the best in Brisbane. Always friendly service and great take away menu.

Good takeaway. Your don't feel like cooking, everyday kind of takeaway shop. Good, honest food!

First but not last visit. We went for dinner this evening (Monday) and whilst the restaurant wasn't busy the take away was constant ... Always a good sign.
We had steamed dim sims, curry puffs, special fried rice, satay beef & sweet and sour pork. The dim sims were so tasty & the curry puffs was a delight. The pork wasn't too sweet, just right. The beef was lovely but just needed a touch of salt ... But all in all was just a lovely meal.
Am looking forward already to going back & trying more things!
There is a reason this place has been in business for so long ... In the words of Molly .... Do yourself a favour

This was our first visit here and it won't be our last! The spring rolls, sate beef and special fries rice were exceptional!

Amazing! Friendly service and wonderful food! Best Chinese restaurant in town!
Gabrielle
Very nice. The dine in menu is a couple of dollars per item more expensive than take away so we always eat it at home.

Consistantly good. We've lived in Moorooka for over 10 years and this place has consistantly serves up quality Chinese food. Prices haven't changed that much either.

Well worth the effort

This is a great suburban Chinese restaurant. Food is tasty, it's BYO so that keeps the cost down and the staff are always friendly.
