Review Moga Izakaya & Sushi - Brisbane

Definitely one of my all time favorite restaurants. The atmosphere is excellent and the staff are very nice and professional. Meals are served very promptly, well almost to quickly, as you don’t have time to absorb the wonderful feel of this place. Food is outstanding and I’m never disappointed every time I go. There does seem to be a disparity between the serving sizes on the sashimi platter though, one time I was very pleased and the next time I received a much smaller portion of the same dish. Prices are very fair for the quality.

Excellent and efficient staff. Beautiful Japanese themed restaurant. Our first time to Order the Sukiyaki Package for two people. The meat was succulent and tasty. The broth of the sukiyaki was authentic. One of the male staff was very helpful and his knowledge made our dining experience very pleasant. If you love good Japanese food and great service, this is not a place to miss.⭐⭐⭐

Situated at a corner of a busy street, this Japanese fusion place has good vibes, good food & good service! Service is quick & attentive, atmosphere is chilled & relaxed; whilst the food is generally decent! The tastes here is not of the familiar ones you have at other Japanese restaurants so it’s quite refreshing. They also have a sushi train inside as an option! Dishes that stood out were seared Wagyu Melt & alburi salmon! Their cocktails (any one) were also a highlight! Slight downside is the difficulty in finding parking around the vicinity & that the price point leaned to the higher side for what it’s worth! Would recommend though!

Nice environment and food arrived quickly. I really love the Plum Rose, fresh and a bit sweet. We have ordered the Wagyu Melt, their best seller, which is very tasty. We also ordered the tempura veggie and Sukiyaki set for two. To be honest, the Sukiyaki set is too salty and the quality is average. In general, a nice place to go if you want to have a causal meal.

Yummy sushi, the hand roll sushi is really tasty! Cozy and relaxing ambiance. Very good service and attentive staff.

Been here several times. Food is always great. Beautiful presentation but more importantly, delicious. Will have to try their sushi train one day. If the quality is as good as their a-la-carte menu then it won't disappoint.
Sunny Day
Loved the decor and the atmosphere. Staff was friendly. Food was average. Had both sushi train and al carte.

Besides the Waiter who "took" our order and actually never did anything resulting in unnecessary wait and a reorder from another waiter. It was a pleasant experience. It is a little on the pricey side with small portions but it was delicious.

We visit for a weekday lunch and I see a bustling kitchen and a Train with over 100 plates of Sushi. We decide to order from the A La Carte Menu. While waiting for our order, Phuong Tran loves sipping her beautiful She So Shiso Cocktail and I like my Umeshu (Plum Liquer) on Ice.

Our lunch order starts to arrive after 15 minutes.
*Wagyu Melt Nigiri
*Prawn & Vegetable Tempura
*Royal Queen’s Guard Roll
*Moga Roll

Every dish is beautifully presented and freshly prepared with fresh ingredients. We enjoy our food served by the friendly and helpful wait staff. This is an exceptional meal which deserves a fourth consecutive perfect 5 in two years. Thank you. Well done Moga!
We had been looking forward to dinner out to celebrate our son’s birthday. Booked a table. Upon arrival, waitress did a dither dance and could not work out where we were to be seated. Turned out it was the only table NOT located under a heater and jammed in the pathway to other tables. Request to be somewhere heated denied ( it was a very cold night and given social distancing there were several vacant tables) So menus dropped, waitress asked if we were ready to order and when we said we would like some time to peruse and placed a drink order she disappeared. Well, not out of view. Just to clean a vacated table ( ironically under a heater). Looonnngg wait for drinks. Never have I felt so jealous for the attention being paid to clearing dirty dishes.
Finally drinks arrived , dribbled over floor, my coat and table ( no cleaning up on our table though) and orders taken and food arrived fast. Miso was delicious. Edamame soggy and unsalted. Duck sushi was tough. Eggplant arrived without utensils and when requested waitress responded with “my bad”. Eggplant was undercooked so instead of being creamy it was stringy and smothered in an overpowering sauce. The pork kushi and prawn katsu were delicious. Another long wait for the wagu Beef which was cold upon arrival. Would have been delicious warmer. And perhaps would have been warmer if we were under a heater. Just saying. Plenty of wait staff at the restaurant but more attention being paid to talking with each other than to doing their jobs. Very disappointed in what was meant to be a lovely night out

I used to love going to moga as a treat. But last visit was a let down. The dishes on the train didn’t seem fresh at all. I’m sure there were dishes that sat on the train the whole time we dined. The fried foods had condensation on the lids which I’m sure made the food soggy. The servings were so tiny. It’s just overpriced. Not better than sushi edo but way more expensive. The sushi dishes on the a la carte menu are better but not good enough to bring me back.

This place used to be a sure winner for my family however we will no longer be coming here. We came to visit early Saturday evening yet the service was so dull and lacking. They were a couple of young wait staff who had no idea what was on the menu, hardly showed any hospitality at all. Very overpriced for the whole experience. The sukiyaki was too sweet and $70 for a plate of veggies and meat. The sushi is nice but up to $17.50 for one of the “special plates” with only 4 pieces on it. Better to go to Oiishi at Sunnybank Hills. Actually, I would have been happier eating Japanese at a food court. What a shame, it used to be a lot nicer. Maybe change of ownership.

Slowly exploring more of #paddingtoneats, this time with a visit to Moga in Rosalie thanks to a Groupon voucher for 10 plates of sushi for $39.

Fun fact 1: moga (モガ) means "modern girl", a reference to Japanese women who followed Westernized fashions and lifestyles in the after World War I.

Fun fact 2: Rosalie is a former suburb of Brisbane, Queensland, Australia. Since 1975, it has been a neighbourhood within the suburb of Paddington.

Our order of sushi plates:
* N03 almond cheese salmon $4.70
* N05 salmon supreme $5.00
* N07 flamed tuna $4.70
* N09 flamed scallop $4.70
* N16 unagi nigiri $4.50
* R17 spicy prawn $5.00
* H04 crab claw $5.00
* H07 karaage $6.00
* H08 tatsuta fry $6.50
* H12 chicken gyoza $7.90

Also added a plum yakitori chicken (2 skewers for $8.50) from the robata grill section of the a la carte menu - grilled free range chicken breast, sea salt, tangy plum mayonnaise.

My favourites from this meal were the almond cheese salmon (something different to the typical conveyor sushi offerings) and the crab claw (hot out of the fryer and full of crab meat). Least exciting were the gyoza (more below) and the skewer (good for the first bite or two but then the dryness from the breast meat becomes apparent).

No luck finding this info online beforehand, but turns out, there are 11 different prices for sushi plates at Moga, ranging from $3.50 to $7.90. The only $7.90 item happens to be chicken gyoza, and whilst there was no way we would order 10 plates of that to maximise our savings, I figured we'd at least try one to see why it's the most expensive plate. I still don't know the answer to that question 😆 (Ok to be fair it was fine, as in pretty on par with most gyoza I've had. I just don't find eating gyoza anywhere near as satisfying as potstickers / pan fried dumplings.)

Anyways our total sushi order was worth $54, so saved $15 or close to 30% with the voucher👌For anyone interested, this deal (with 5/10/15 plate options) is still available.
.
.
.
#mogapaddington #rosalieeats #japanesefood #sushi #grouponanz #foundongroupon

Went to Moga with a Groupon and the server barely said anything except ask if we wanted to order Sukiyaki when we said no. The glass they gave us had lipstick stains on them. The covers on the sushi plates were clearly not cleaned. The sushi rice was either too dry or too mushed up. The variety of sushi was also disappointing. Servers didn’t know what they were doing with the sake. Would rather go to Sushi Train.
Jenny
Sukiyaki is very nice, beef is very fresh and marbling. The veggies goes perfectly with the soup. Would go back again for sukiyaki. Sashimi is fine, value-wise it is just ok, would jot order again.

Lovely ambience and atmosphere, Moda has an extensive a la carte menu as well as a sushi train running through their dining area as well as a selection of sake and beer. Staff were extremely friendly and attentive.

Sadly, the menu provided to us at the time was quite different to the one currently on Zomato and much more limited, as we weren't able to order some dishes that caught our eye on the uploaded menu.

However, our highlight was the sashimi and the crispy salmon roll, this roll was so delicious!! especially with the crispy salmon skin wrapped around the roll literally topped it off.
FOODIE ADVENTURE
Average only because nothing of it's local competition Zutto Bento. Zutto Bento is hands down my ultimate fav restaurant so other Japanese restaurants have to really match up to that and unfortunately Moga doesn't. The quality just isn't that great when compared to Zutto Bento however my kids do like the sushi train option. And finally l think the service can be improved heaps. Not very attentive.

Not impressed. we have been here a couple of times. And food was ok. This time Called and was told they were open and we could come in then they declined us to order when we arrived half an hour later

A gem on the north side with a big cute kumamon at the front. The whole environment was chill and was a perfect spot for conversations.
They have the inside for sushi train and the outer section for ala carte. Very fresh ingredients plus amazing cooking made our dining experience very pleasant. The staff there was all very friendly and polite.

Beautifully presented food. Cozy and relaxed ambience-perfect! Palatable food but was expecting for an authentic Japanese taste- sadly their food is a bit bland and far from it

“We don’t eat enough Asian food” … A common phrase I hear from my girlfriend, needless to say I think this satisfied that itch. Lets enter this beautiful venue 😊. Wide open seating. Kyo No 'Gold Flake' Sake. House made Plum wine with Premium vodka and dash of soda. What a way to start.

Could this be the best Restaurant in north side ?
Haven't seen any other place has similar ambience, absolutely loved the outdoor area! And the Japanese beer collection is second to none!

One of my favourite Japanese Restaurants in Brisbane! Love dining at the outdoor area enjoying the summer breeze. Recommend the Moga Roll, the Sesame Mushroom Salad and the Wagyu-Aburi, as I order these on my every visit! The sashimi and the oysters are fresh too. The Prawn Yaki set was okay, but would prefer the sauce to be more creamy.
Miso Hungry
Authentic Japanese food, very delicious but I would say that I would reserve this one for special occasions. Maybe I can be highly critical of the cuisine closest to my heart. I do have high expectations especially when the price point is above average. Biggest issue here was the portion size. Large sashimi platter only had 10-15 pieces and the knife work did not get the best out of the textures of what was undoubtedly, very fresh produce. The prawn dish was for me, slightly confused and had lost its authenticity. The eggplant dish was flavorful and the highlight. The sushi roll was inventive and photogenic. Positives and negatives for this very attractive modern Japanese venue. Not to say I won’t be back but I possibly caught them on an off day.
Emily
Staff were very polite and friendly. Restaurant was very clean and had a nice atmosphere. The food tasted fresh and delicious. Would definitely choose this sushi place over others.
3 Broke Lads
Really tasty food and great service! The serving sizes were certainly smaller then anticipated and the seating was pretty uncomfortable. Beautiful decor though!
Becca Robinson
This is authentic Japanese. With house made umeshu (plum wine) which is the best i have ever had. I have travelled through Japan and this place is legit. I am very picky and enjoy flavourful food. This place ticked all my boxes. Friendly staff and delicious food. I can’t fault this place in the slightest.

Very disappointing experience last night at Moga. The food was good but appalling service. Won’t be returning here as there are much better places to get good Japanese food in Brisbane like Wagaya and Oishii.
Kirsty James
Moga has a great menu, however the food, in my opinion was lacking. There wasn’t anything amazing with the dishes and we tried a variety from the menu - Salmon Negima, Wagyu Houba Yaki, Kohitsuji miso, Camembert Cheese Katsu, Vege dumplings, Chicken Kara-Age, Tempura Zucchini Flower & Edamame. Overall the price was good value coming to around $120 for all of the dishes.

Had Christmas Eve dinner at this lovely Japanese restaurant last night. We were arranged to sit at the a la carte dining area just right at the front of the restaurant. It was very busy that might be the reason of average standard in service. Indeed, we had to raise up our hands to ask for service a few times. Ordered six dishes as tapas style to share with addition of a can of dark beer from Kariuizawa. First dish to the table was the Moga top seller (Crispy Salmon Roll). Honestly, the effect was just average and there was not much surprise (3.5/5). The second one came the Seafood Yaki Set. We were lucky to have three tiger prawns instead of two as described on the menu. However, it was not the extra prawn attracted a good impression; it was the taste, which was superb, particualrly the grilled smokey bay oyster (5/5). The next came the Robata grill of lamb cutlets (Kohitsuji Miso). Wow, the lamb cutlets were well cooked to med-rare and the three different type of miso brought us three different varieties of taste. Although there was no Togarshi available, the replacement of tempura vegetables with cilli pepper was excellent (5/5). The next dish of flamed Founder egde was my flavorite (first itme to have such dish in Japanese restaurant). However, if the chef presented this dish as the first dish to the table then my palate could 100% enjoy the freshness of the sashimi and it would definitely gain the full mark (4.5/5). The fifth dish was the soup (Oyster Mizore Ni). It was slightly let down. The daikon radish did not present the effect of "Mizori" (snow flake) and the oysters seemed not quite fresh; however, the broth tasted good and I loved the idea of having the soup with the salmon roes (3.5/5). The last dish of Kamo River Roll was the worst of the night. It did not gain extra appreciation due to the strong flavour of the pickles that covered all the taste of shredde duck breast (3/5). Overall dining experience was good and this place is highly recommended. Nevertheless, may I suggest the managment to think about upgrading your credit card machine. It seems too old-school that diners can not put extra tips through the system by paying credit card and only allow to pay cash for any tips. That sounds weird......
Geoff
Moga is quirky and fresh al a carte or sushi conveyor belt - your call - booth or stool - again your call. About $70 for three and a beer or two included. The moga roll is the signature dish and sensational. Kingfish hand roll good. Nice ambience but a bit something...you decide

I came here for a date a few weeks ago and was seated in the front vestibule. The atmosphere is casual dining, in a somewhat open air setting that has retractable weather screens. The only real knock against the atmosphere was the table was sticky- not an unclean sticky, but more of a 'they used the wrong varnish so now the tables are tacky' sticky. My partner was more put off than I was.

The service was pretty bad. My water and beer sat empty for the whole meal, and despite making it clear off the start that we would order additional food, we couldn't manage to flag down a server (without going to the extent of causing a scene). So be sure to order all your food and alcohol up front? We also ran out of soya sauce and despite leaving the container at the edge of the table with the lid off, it was not replaced.

The food itself was fine- nothing bad, nothing memorable. We had a variety of sushi rolls and sashimi, but nothing really stood out above the typical mall kiosk sushi. Also noteworthy was the wasabi sauce was quite bland, and lacked that essential nasal burn that a proper wasabi should provide.

I will go back, but am definitely not in a rush.
Little Man
I am very lucky that this is a local restaurant. Fantastic fresh sashimi. All of our dishes were fantastic except for a prawn dish which was overcooked and loaded with avocado (not really necessary). The warm saki is also a nice way to finish the meal. Will definitely be back!!

A nice sushi train in Rosalie, a great place to stop before going to the Cinema or for a quick bite. However we were asked to leave at 8.30pm on Saturday because the restaurant was closing, so don't expect to stay here late.
Deelicious
Have eaten here numerous times, for a quick bite at the sushi train, and a la carte dining with small and large groups. The service and food have always been spot on, and there is something for everyone in the extensive menu. The tempura zucchini flower, Yasai tempura and sesame mushroom salad are particular favourites. Lots of highly recommended meat dishes as well and an extensive Japanese whisky selection. The atmosphere is lovely, with greenery and soft lighting creating an intimate environment.

Don't bother this establishment is terrible.
We booked for 8:30pm as it was after a movie and were told that the kitchen closed at 9:30pm. When we arrived we were rushed to order as staff packed up around us and said the kitchen closes at 9:00pm. Before all of the people at our table had even been served their food we had been asked to pay as they wanted to cash off their till. We said no not until we had been served and eaten our food they then came back and requested we pay 2 more times. This is the most unwelcomed and unimportant I have ever felt at an establishment. The wait staff were rude and did not give a crap. When we asked to speak to the manager they said he had left already and just said pay the bill. F+++++++ Do not go to this crap hole spend your money at any one of the other better establishments at Rosalia.

This is my favourite Japanese restaurant. Lovely people and top service . Would recommend the Moga roll as well as the sashimi they serve. Very fresh.

The interior of the restaurant is stunning!
And the food is just as good!
Excellent service and well worth the price.
Gets a bit busy so try to go when it's not peak times

I've come to Moga quite a lot over the last few months. They have really nice and fresh sushi, and my partner tells me the karage and deep fried teriyaki chicken roll are amazing. They have a lot of gf options available and the Moga iced tea they make is excellent. Good service and a really nice atmosphere. Would definitely recommend!

Sat at the train today, and found that most of the dishes on the train looked and tasted like they had been made yesterday. Any food that was supposed to be warm/hot was very cold, and had probably been taken out of the fridge and put on the train. The dumplings in cane steamers were cold, and the wrappers were dried out. After tasting each plate, I left most as the food was unpleasant. When I spoke to the staff about the problem, they showed no interest in my complaint, just shrugged their shoulders. I have been fan of the food in the main restaurant for a year or so, however the attitude from the staff today means that I will not return.

Super delicious! The only thing that is slightly disappointing is the size of the meals. It's a little expensive, but the food is awesome... just a little small. The menu has some unusual pieces, and they were all delicious. Loved the ambience.

Moga is situated in lovely Rosalie, and it according to the restaurant; it means modern girl. Plenty of street parking, it is extremely accessible.

The place had an amazing atmosphere, I felt like I was eating at a little eatery in Japan. The staff was very friendly and pleasant.

We ordered the moga roll, spider roll, tonkatsu, and pork gyozas.

The gyozas were lovely, thin skinned with generous fillings. They were fried to perfection, and when consumed with the vinegar soy sauce, were extremely delectable.

The tonkatsu was really well done. They serve it with a special kind of tonkatsu sauce. It tastes abit like a hybrid of tomato sauce and bbq sauce. Goes extremely well together.

The spider roll was great, it is soft shell crab sushi with fish roe and tobiko on top. Perfect balance of the roe and sauce.

The moga roll consists of a Hokkaido scallop in the middle, with a softly done aburi fish piece. I loved it, it all came together extremely well!

Lastly, i want to compliment the wasabi in this place. The wasabi was amazing, they do not mix it with much mustard.

Moga is now one of my favourite Japanese eateries and I will definitely be back to try the rest of their menu!

P.S. they have a sushi train inside the shop, if you are in a rush and need some good sushi, just head down to Moga!

Chris
I'm a regular diner at this lovely restaurant. I prefer their a la carte menu to the sushi train option. The sashimi platters are melt in your mouth fresh and delicious. Staff are always very friendly and the service is excellent. So many wonderful dishes I am yet to try something I haven't enjoyed.
Anthony H
Fresh and delicious Japanese food! The sushi is fresh and the sashimi is some of the best I've tasted. The tofu salad was also fantastic even though I'm not vegetarian. We will definitely be back.

I went there last night with my partner for dinner. The menu was really different to read. More than ten pages of menu filled up with small texts without any photo. We spent more than 10 minutes to understand it.
The food was served reasonably quick. They all taste ok to us but the portion were really small. Therefore we ordered something more. We found the chicken skew quite interesting. Again two finger sized chicken skews weren't good enough to justify the $8.5 price. Food and price aside, the waitress was not very attentive and her attitude was kind of rude or not respected after we ordered not so many food. I am happy to pay more for good food but not something really ordinary.
Claire Pullen
I live locally to Moga and my partner and I go here all the time for dinner, either by ourselves or with groups of friends. We only ever dine in the A la carte section as It's beautiful and pleasant with the night air and Japanese lantern lighting. The food is amazing, my favourites are Yaki Nasu Dengaku Miso (the scorched eggplant), Wagyu-tataki (thinly sliced, grilled rare Wagyu) & the Tempura Zucchini Flower stuffed with prawn. I have many more favourites but too many to list! The staff are always friendly and the wait time has never been too long. We'll be back again soon for sure!

Think old school American diner crossed with early Japanese pub. Moga - "modern girl" is a funky twist on authentic Japanese dining.

The venue is pretty big. Well decorated with great service. The manager Joseph was quick to greet us and brimming with knowledge and suggestions on what to eat.

The Wagyu dishes were all labeled as MB6, I'd have to agree, there wasn't any more info though which is sad but expected in Brisbane.

Urakasumi zen sake and house umeshu plumb wine were both great accompaniments. My favourite was in fact the salmon tataki. I could have eaten more Wagyu 😢

Defiantly keen on hitting the sushi train, it looked a lot better than most. Thanks Moga. — at Moga Japanese Bar & Dining

Ordered "robata grilled" yakitori skewers. They weren't grilled, more so microwaved/steamed then blow torched. Absolutely terrible. It's a shame as most of their sushi is good.
Mark
Great atmosphere and drinks. Good typical izakaya style but portions for some items are too small for the price. Yakitori was $8 for two smallish sticks and the deep fried cheese was also tiny for the price paid. Takoyaki and sushi were all good though.

Fusion Japanese restaurant with a lovely outdoor seating area hidden away in Rosalie village. The sushi rolls here are amazing, very interesting twists on traditional Japanese flavours. Pictured is the Koma roll with duck (a must try), crispy salmon sushi (very tasty), almond chicken (not much flavour to these but the almonds were nicely toasted) and fried tofu/crab dish (tasty). There is also sushi train available but I would recommend the dinner menu instead. It can be a little pricey depending on what you order but if you are after a relaxing dining experience, come here and definitely try the sushi rolls!
Lambo Blair
Moga has both indoor and outdoor seating, the outdoor seating is really nice. Went there for lunch today and ordered the sashimi salmon, which I have to say wasn't the most substantial meal. It was nice but quite small. Moga has quite an extensive menu so deciding on what to eat can be difficult.
Nic Habgood
Really disappointed with our meal in the sushi train part of this restaurant. All of the hot food dishes on the train were stone cold (such as karaage, crab claws and takoyaki). There wasn't much variety on the train - mostly chicken dishes, which is fine if you can order off the menu if you want something else, but the staff only came over once to take our drink order and deliver drinks. It was a real shame because the setting and decor was quite inviting. We wrongfully expected that spending a little more would result in some really tasty dishes but it was just terrible. Diner #2 says "insipid, cold, over-priced, limited range. Could be so much better." Diner #3 says "barely palatable, would not come again." Diner 4 "dirty dish-cloth on the train. Speechless." Diner #5 says "embarrassed for recommending this place."
Save your money and go to Sushi Edo in Newmarket where your bill will be half the price and you'll actually leave feeling satisfied.
Always very delicious and great food to share amongst friends! I had eaten at the sushi train area of the restaurant last time, which I enjoyed. This time I ate outside with the Al La Carte menu. The lighting was dim as we sat around the side which was close to the road; but this meant we had privacy. The food was delicious- we had a miso to start, so yummy and tasty. Then shared a crispy salmon sushi, a chicken kaarage, pork gyoza and some octopus balls (called something else in Japanese) We had a great little feast - and will be back very soon! - perhaps will try some of their delicious desserts.
The Food Oracle
If it is a hot day, this is the place to go. They blast the AC!
The sushi train is rather expensive simply because the food items are very small. But the service was good, atmosphere is fun. I also liked that there is a bathroom in the little restaurant, the bathroom size is almost the same size as the whole inside of the restaurant. I would recommend eating the a la carte instead of the train.
Shane Cavok
On arrival we sat for about 15 minutes without menus, service or water. The food was hugely over priced. I would not recommend Moga to anyone who is looking for good value for money.
Espresso&Matcha
In my effort to eat ALL the Japanese food in Brisbane, it was inevitable that sooner or later I would be going to Moga at Rosalie, situated opposite Blue Room and Gelataria Cremona. . We made reservation before hand and were given a semi alfresco table, outside of the restaurant building but still under cover.
Leah
We enjoyed Moga! The Plum Yakitori Chicken and Grilled Salmon Skewers were a favourite. The sushi was tasty and cocktails very nice. Staff were attentive and service was friendly. We would come back again.
PleasantPeristalsis
This is my favourite Japanese place in Brisbane. I adore the friendly staff in Japanese clothings and the soothing interior. I adore the long list of creative and unique menu. The Izakaya dishes are slightly dear for the portion sizes but they are deliciously addictive. Besides, you can easily fill up on the sushi rolls. Last but not least, the house-made plum wine is the bomb!
Molly Siu
Lovely Japanese retro bar, wonderful atmosphere that I feel I am back to the 50's in Toyko. Food are superb, especially their snacks. Very nice plum wine and sake selections. Highly recommend to everyone who want real Japanese bar experience.
Brisfoodanddrink
We had a great family dinner at Moga. Beers are great. the booth fit 7 of us (4 adults and 3 kids). Its a tad cold inside, but assume its for the food.
Kittypie2008
BEST Japanese food in Brisbane. Everything about this place is amazing, from the beautiful decor to the fresh, delicious food. Everything is always beautifully presented, the meals here are a work of art - almost too beautiful to eat. I can't say I have a favorite thing on the menu as everything I have ordered here is always great - which makes a little tricky to order sometimes because it can be hard to choose. All of the food - hot food and the sashimi are always brilliant. I've been here for both lunch and dinner and every time the food has been wonderful and the staff are really lovely. I also really love the great selection of Japanese beer that they have, and the cocktails are also fabulous. This place has a great atmosphere and is classy without being pretentious with great food and fast, friendly service.

Extremely rude manager! Will NEVER go back.. My partner and I visited Moga in February '15. The portions are small and quite expensive compared to other Japansese restaurants in Brisbane, where the quality is actually better. Nevertheless is a local restaurant and it was an evening we looked forward to.

We ordered a glass of wine each and my partner noticed that his wine was oxidised so he sent it back. The waitress was polite and came back with another glass... also oxidised and obviously taken from another open bottle. At this point my partner politely sent it back and said to the waitress that he would cancel his order for a glass of wine. After a while, the waitress came back and said her manager had instructed her to open a fresh bottle in front of us. This was a vast improvement on the previous two glasses so it was accepted.

When it came to paying the bill my partner suggested that there should perhaps be a small discount for being served oxidised wine, not once but twice. The polite waitress went back to her manager, who came to our table and verbally insulted us. He angrily shouted at us, telling us random information about how the owners father pays when he comes to the restaurant and not listening to what we were saying. We were never ever not going to pay for our meal. We just felt that as a gesture of good will for two oxidised glasses of wine, that they would give a small discount. All we got was ranting and abuse from the manager. I have never in my life experienced any kind of response from a restaurant manager like this! We felt quite battered at the end of what should have been a nice evening.

I can only imagine if the manager continues like this that he will not go far in his career. The manager was not Japanese.

I hope other customers have a much nicer experience. FWIW the waitresses and waiters were lovely (and looked slightly embarrassed about the whole thing).

So, MOGA for us, does not cut it. We will never go back. The food is overpriced and the quality is nothing special. Somehow it does not quite sound as good as it is written on the menu. There are much better Japanese restaurants in Brisbane and you can go to them without fear of being abused!

Impressed but underfed. Tried Moga last night after hearing mixed reviews. Absolutely loved the atmosphere and design of the space and was very impressed by the menu at first glance. However, my partner and I ordered 9 dishes to share and still left hungry! Unfortunately the portion size and cost per plate do not add up for a satiating visit. Don't think I will be back unless they lower the cost or increase the portion sizes. Wanted to love it but left a little underwhelmed.

Stand outs:
Salmon Negami (standout delicately balanced dish)
Aburi wagyu (classic with great accompaniments)

Let downs:
Chicken yakitori (boring and overcooked)
Fried zucchini flower (one flower, mostly zucchini)

100 bucks for a 100 grams of food. I really wanted to love this place, it was designed very well. However, it is a waste of money as you are left hungry even after you order 5 plus dishes. Very disappointing !! On top of the small portions which are doll size, it is expensive. Would not go back to this place, there are much better Japanese restaurants around Brisbane. Again it is a shame as the restaurant was beautiful. I wish I had read the reviews before we went, this appears to be a common complaint.

Great food, lovely decor and will definitely be back!. I tried the yakitori chicken, chicken kara age, beef tataki and the pork gyoza.
Absolutely loved the beef tataki, it was quite the experience
Everything else was lovely too.
It was the atmosphere of the place that I really enjoyed.
Portions were quite small which that generally doesn't bother me but if you're a big eater might cost a bit to fill you up.
Overall great experience and will definitely be back

Truly ordinary food.. I expected good things from this place as it has the right look and feel for a decent dining experience but I was disappointed with both the quality and quantity of the dishes on the sushi train. I dined there with a friend this afternoon and after spending $50 between us on sushi we headed across the road to a coffee shop and had coffee and cake as we weren't full from the sushi.

The sushi rice was dead cold and flavourless and the prices were on the high side of standard. We decided it was time to go and not come back after noticing that they wanted to charge $15 for deep fried ice cream. Just not worth it folks.

Rip rip wood chip. Really overpriced. We ate in the front section.
I can get more food at sono for about the same price. Sono is much better quality though. I came home feeling hungry...

Very disappointing. The place was nicely decorated and had a good vibe, but the food was terrible. The fish used in sushi was not as fresh as advertised and most of the sushi were laden with mayonnaise. We also had ebi tempura and simmered oysters. These were okay. We had fish, chicken, and pork skewers. Although they had a nice charcoal-grilled flavour, they were (all of them) pretty bland. We had chicken with mentaiko. While I love mentaiko, the combination of flavours in this dish is just wrong. I'm not sure if it is then a blessing or a curse that it was a superficial flavour, as the meat itself was tasteless (I don't think they seasoned it). The skin of the chicken was also soft and greasy. It would have improved the chicken if the skin was on the crisp side. Wouldn't be whining this much if it was low to mid-price. I wouldn't pay low prices for the food --- quality and quantity were poor, and Moga charges way, way more than what the food is worth, but perhaps, we are paying for the cool, playful ambience?

Still hungry,,,,. It was so disappointed to say we left there still hungry ,,,,.
The portions were so small and I think they were over priced. The flavours,,,so so.
We only enjoyed is the atmosphere. Nice decor and stuffs were nice enough but we won't be back for sure.

A lovely change. It was our anniversary and I was looking for somewhere for dinner - I didn't fancy our usual viet/indian and wasn't up for schlepping into the city to hit up a fine-diner ... and unusual for me, I really fancied Japanese. So it was that we ended up at Moga. I had eyed the place off a few times when across the road at one of our fav places but just never managed to get there. Which is a shame because the food here is pretty darn good.

I booked and lucky I did as even on a Tuesday evening, the place got pretty full in the seated restaurant out the front (lots of walk-ins - not sure how busy the train was). Anyway service was very good with us seated quickly, our lovely waiter bringing us drinks menus and then promptly taking our drink orders and providing meal menus.

Firstly our drinks - I chose a cocktail called (I think) shi so shiso ... anyway it was delicious, light and fresh and just yum. Hubby had a japanese apple & ginger cider and this was seriously good (I had more than one sip) and I would highly recommend. Not to sweet and just perfect with the meal that was to follow. For dinner we decided on a number of smaller plates to share - our preferred style of eating these days - and ordered edamame (always good), Kamo River Roll (duck sushi - this was divine), Tonkatsu (the panko is perfection), Chicken yakatori and a small sashimi plate. Everything was truly fresh and delicious and we enjoyed every last morsel. My only complaint is that it all came out so quickly - rather than pacing the various plates a little - so it was quite a rushed meal and we were done in about 30 minutes. Now if you are in a hurry that's fine - but as we were sort of after a slower paced dinner it was a little annoying (and it was hard work fitting all the plates on the small table). But that is a minor quibble - next time (and there will be many more next times) we would order a dish or two, then order a few more once those are done - and pace things out a little.

The fitout is lovely and as I said earlier, the service was excellent. Hubby isn't all that keen on japanese but even he said at the end "we will be back there" ... and yes we will!

Great atmosphere and service however the portions were very small (4 thin slices of wagyu for $16) just felt slightly ripped off. The duck was outstanding but we spent $100 here tonight and raided the fridge when we got home!

Amazing. Most amazing service and food! Compliments to the chef. Their house made plum wine and sashimi are highly recommended.

The food is yummy and the service is excellent!

Dined at Moga tonight with some good friends. The dining experience was excellent with all boxes being ticked.
Food was stunning and service exceptional!

Fresh sushi, very yum!. The decor of this place is beautiful, one of the nicest sushi trains I have been to in Brisbane. And the sushi & sashimi is very fresh. I recommend trying the fresh white fish, salmon and tuna nigiri. Their drinks menu is extensive, they serve japanese cocktails, beers, whiskeys and the warm sake is my personal favourite. The staff are very friendly and helpful. I am definitely going back.

10/10. Love this place. The staff are super friendly and the venue is amazing. I haven't tried the mains, only plates from the sushi train but the sushi is always fresh and delicious which is rare for sushi trains. I went here with my Dad once who is obsessed with sashimi and he said it's the best he's ever had. It's a little more expensive than other sushi trains but the freshness and quality of the ingredients is definitely worth it.

I had alacarte here and the food was really good quality, but it each dish came out incredibly slowly... to the point that I may not come again. It's more of a social place to go with friends n chat so you don't notice how long the food takes to come out. Service is good though.

I was highly disappointed. The place is beautiful and well located, but that's where the positives end. Extremely small portions for high prices and sushi fit for a supermarket makes for an unpleasant experience. I will not be going back.

A la carte menu: Nice enough tasting food but tiny portion sizes (especially when you see how much it costs per dish). I'm not a big eater but even I needed to order more than one dish so I wasn't left starving (and still went across the road for delicious gelato!)
John
Really nice service and exceptionally beautiful decor. The biggest letdown is the food. The guy below who proclaims to have been to japan many times and said that this restaurant is authentic is obviously nuts. Food was mediocre at best. Portions were small and lacked seasoning.

Best Japanese restaurant in Brisbane!. Fantastic place! Best Japanese restaurant I have been to in Brisbane, I have been to Japan many times and the dishes at Moga taste like real authentic Japanese food, absolutely delicious. A huge selection on the menu, extremely friendly staff and a really nice atmosphere. They have a great selection of Japanese craft beer and some awesome homemade plum wine.
With the choice of eating at the sushi train or dining out in the Izakaya section, I highly highly recommend it.

Love this place! Had the sushi train for the first time tonight (we usually have the a la carte) and it was bloody sensational. My favorite sushi place in Brisvegas.

-----06 Apr, 2014-----

I love this place! A favourite in my neighbourhood. Fantastic selection and ambience. Can highly highly recommend the moga roll. Too good.
Jenny
Dined at Moga last week with my husband. Was refreshing to have the choice of so many unique and interesting dishes. We particularly enjoyed the crispy salmon rolls and Tempura Oysters. A good selection of drinks, a super friendly waitress and a modern and stylish interior. We enjoyed our experience.

Finally. And loved it.. Finally got in. We had tried to book a table late on a Saturday twice now, only to be told again that there were no seats. So we booked ahead early this time so as not to be disappointed. The food was amazing, the large sashimi simply mouth watering . Hubby liked the Moga roll and the chicken mince skewer things. I liked the Rosalie roll and the grilled eggplant with the miso sauce. The service was lovely. Thumbs up, worth a try, we will be back soon.

Moga Munchies!. Hello everyone!

I have been to Moga around a dozen times or more. I highly recommend it but if you're conscious about spending a lot of money or you like large portion sizes please read on to avoid disappointment! You can dine in the al a carte (outdoor) section or at the sushi train indoors. Overall I prefer the train because it is more economical and I like getting lots of small dishes (that are economically priced). The menu for both areas is different but some items are available on both menus.

The best item I can recommend in terms of taste and value for money is the Rosalie role (available on both menus). I absolutely love it! I order it every time I go and never tire of the taste. Many people have also complained about portion size - try ordering the moga roll's they are quite large and very filling - my husband gets the modern girl moga roll (scallops & flamed salmon etc.)

The tempura is also good and quite filling. Steer clear of the wagyu tataki if you want a large portion of food but if you really want to try it opt for the more expensive wagyu steak as it is quite a large serving and tastes exceptional (45.00).

I recommend the bara mizu cocktail (with mint and watermelon) and also the house made the plum wine. The plum wine is only $4.00 or so which is crazy good and tastes delicious. I went to Japan a few weeks ago and I tried a great deal of plum wine while I was over there and Moga is still my favourite.

In terms of their kushi (skewered meat) I would not recommend the beef kushi, as other people have commented it is quite tough. Opt for the chicken yakitori instead. I also recommend opening with a miso soup and some edamame as both are quite cheap and very good for you (don't eat the edamame shell, just squeeze out the beans, I don't know how many times I have seen people try to do this - your teeth will lose and you won't enjoy it...)

The desserts are ok - my husband is taken by them but I like the cocoa iced cheese cake (cheese cake flavoured ice cream more or less) they are fairly traditional in terms of using ice cream and red bean which seems common in Japan but please don't expect a western style cheese cake or you will be disappointed.

My favourite sushi train items are the gyoza (the cheaper gyoza is better imo) and the vegetable tempura with avocado on rice. They also have mini spring rolls which I think are a great option for children (not that I have any).

I hope this review helps you if you decide to visit Moga ^_^

Poor and still hungry. Going out for second meal now!

Love this place. Set out is fantastic, great atmosphere. Try to sit in the booths next to the train and enjoy, they let you order from the menu aswell so you get the best of both worlds. Staff are very nice. The "rainbow egg rolls" (don't let the name put you off) on the sushi train are fantastic. I always end up spending and arm and a leg because everything on the train looks fantastic

I went to this restaurant on Valentine's day. It was fantastic! The food was great. Specially, Duck Hatoumi tataki! Also the staff were really friendly and kind! Good price for a fine restaurant! Strongly recommend for special occasions! !!!!

Wanted to love it .... Nice setting and lovely staff. The menu looked really great, but everything we ordered was ordinary (and we ordered a lot because the portions are so small!). Tiny portions for the price, lacking in flavour. Nothing really tasted as it sounded on the menu. Sushi was fresh, but again rather flavourless. Overall, really ordinary, which was disappointing. Especially since we'd racked up $100 between two people (they bring a running total of your bill each time you order) and were still feeling hungry. With so many delicious sushi/Japanese places now in Brisbane, there are much better places to go, at better prices, so we won't be back.
Claude
Meh. Yeah it was alright I guess, sushi was made fresh, the wait wasn't too long, but the portion sizes were a joke. When the first dish came out it was tiny, and the rest were kind of the same. It would be ok if I was ordering from the train, but these were Al a carte dishes and for 15 dollars each you need to offer more. The gelato shop across the road must love them, because after spending $90 and still being hungry we gladly crossed the road for dessert. Glad to have tried it, but won't be returning.
Matt Lane
Fresh. Great fresh sushi from the train some of the best I have had in Brisbane. Look forward to trying the a la carte menu!
SCC
Pretty good. While the sushi was delicious and fresh and the ambiance quite enjoyable, I wasn't very impressed with the long wait in between ordering food. It was about 9pm on a Saturday night, so the sushi train wasn't exactly full because they'd prefer to make orders as they come to stay fresh. I'm a big fan of this - nothing worse than day old sushi.

I ordered the Lychee martini - wasn't impressed with the presentation - what happened to the crispy sugared apple chip?!? I was looking forward to that but didn't get one like it said on the menu.

Another thing that was quite irritating was when we sat down, not one, not two, not three but FOUR different waiters came up to us within 5 minutes asking if we wanted to order before we'd even look at the menu. I like attentive waiters but this was too much - the floor staff could have communicated a bit better in this instance. Thanks for checking on us - but give me a minute to take in the menu!

I understand everything was made fresh and we enjoyed every bite of the sushi and other food we ordered. But most of our time was spent waiting 20 minutes (not exaggerating) between every order. It wasn't really that busy on this night either, which left me confused and hungry...

At 10pm I asked to order another cocktail, and the waitress looked at me a bit funny. I said, oh, you are still open right? And she quickly looked over at the barman who seemed to give her a shake of the head as though he didn't want to make cocktails anymore. She didn't go over and ask or anything. Now, I'm sorry Brisbane but 10pm on a SATURDAY night is not late trading for a restaurant. In fact, it's pretty normal. I found that really irritating considering we'd already spent about $80 there.

Over all - Nice food and great atmosphere. Very romantic for a date as well.

Service - Can be improved. Wait times were far too long for something like sushi, especially being that it was not busy.

Oh yummmm!the sushi is the best ive had in Brisbane! Nice and fresh (we were there at about 12) and omg...the gyoza...amazing....the tuna teeny sushi roll...fresh and moist...the crumbed crab claw ball was the BEST ball that has entered my mouth...so moist and crunchy too...the avocado katsu chicken roll topped with kewpie (drool) and black sesame seeds...oh wow...and the other one...that was good too. Left feeling full and happy for $28.00 including a drink.

Quality TICK
Happy staff TICK
Fresh yummy morsels TICK
Not just another person doing a rave review TICK
qualified chef who knows her stuff TICK

Happy with the overall Moga experience...LOVE the welcome too....definitely be back again and definitely will recommend to others.

A Great Place. My friends & i had an amazing time here. The food was great & didn't take long to get to the table either. Really cool atmosphere. We'll be going back.

Just lovely!. We popped in here for a try of the new sushi spot in Brisbane after reading a few good reviews. The decor and staff are wonderful and it's just a lovely little spot. The sushi is good, ok maybe a little better than good....great (?) but by no means the best in town. Definately worth a visit though and we will be back!

Fantastic Dinner Experience!. I had a birthday dinner with my friends in Moga Izakaya. We ordered Moga roll for starter, it was amazing...teriyaki salmon and scallop...so yammy. Also we enjoyed Yaki nasue and wague dish. Friendly staff and I definitely come back.

Very disappointing! We visited around 3 weeks ago and almost every aspect let us down.

Food was average. Service was shocking and they even stuffed up our bill and the woman trying to pay before us too!

Delicious food. Lovely staff.

Salmon and Tuna freshness were a cracker.... I followed a suggestion from friends of an Izakaya in the heart of Paddington. We all went there last 15/11 for dinner, we made a reserve for 10, but without notice became 15. The decoration is typical Japanese, besides the rain that ruined any possibility for a beautiful night, the Japanese Staff made our table's night. This specific Brazilian waiter, that first of all told us he was from North Korea, even if he had a strong French accent, push us all the menu, from Cocktails Sake based to Craft Japanese beers (must try! We just stop drinking after all our favourites beers sold out), the tapas were very good, but apparently the rain made service slower, but nothing that our "John Monache" could guarantee exclusive service and all the attention from waiters.
After few hours in this "little Tokyo" experience, we learnt that Sake is made of rice and more it is polished pure and expensive it becomes. We definitely emerged in Japanese culture and would highlight the "Rosa lee" cocktail made of Lychee and the rolls that have the name of the house, Moga Roll. "It is our signature dish" said our "FakeNorth Korean waiter"... Recommended!!!
