Review 5 Boroughs - Brisbane

Good burgers and sandwiches. Delicious waffle chips. Friendly staffs and adequate service. Will come back again.

Had dinner here with the fam. The service and food was really good. The only let down were the ribs. We ordered half babyback prok ribs and I swear we only got a quarter worth. Didn't think much at that time. Plus, the ribs were not that great. A bit chewy and not cooked long enough.

Fantastic food, the staff were super friendly, and the outdoor/alleyway tables were a cool place to escape from the heat. I'll be coming back!

I dropped in for a beer with a matter at the bar. The staff were friendly and one what they were doing and the place was busy. I was happy with the selection of beers both on tap and in the fridge - I went with a young Henry motor oil stout and my mate had a Brooklyn lager. The large mirror was a bit confusing because we thought the place was bigger than it was. The size and look of the plates of food going out was impressive so I think next time we might try a bite to eat as well

Had such a great experience here that we took more friends back the next day for lunch! Staff are amazing and the food is fast and tasty. Good place for families and they were very accommodating with dietary requirements.

I don’t usually dine in, so I can’t share that experience however every time I order take away - it is fantastic…. The “King of Queens” chicken burger is without a doubt the best chicken burger in Brisbane!

Had a great Ruben sandwich and coffee. Good selection of beer. Burgers and fries got thumbs up from the kids. Recommend!

Had a great dinner here. Nice food, relaxed atmosphere and just an all round good venue for burgers. Enjoyed the New York burger, mac n cheese croquettes, and the hot wings (very spicy).. . All good. Kids meal (chicken tenders) were a bit meh and we should've sent it back but the chips made up for it. We had a really friendly and efficient server that helped our 10ppl group. Look forward to coming back again.

Passed by and stopped for dessert. Was excited to see interesting flavors for thick shakes. <br/>Loved the peanut butter chocolate thickshake. The waffle is good though the size is rather small. Coffee was good too. Our waitress was an absolute delight.

On my way home after an afternoon fishing session, I visit for a quick dinner with a 30% Eat Club discount voucher. Greeted by the friendly waitress I am promptly shown to my table and I ask her for a large Lemon Bitters to quench my thirst. <br/><br/>My Sirloin Steak and Hot Chips ($33) is served in under 30 minutes. The Steak is perfectly grilled and the French Fries are piping hot. I enjoy this simple meal and it hits the spot. Well done Guys!<br/>

Ordered a burger, fish taco, chips and peanut butter thick shake from Uber Eats and we were not disappointed! Everything was delicious and tasted super fresh. The thick shake was amazing!!

Ever been to a restaurant where you are made to feel like an inconvenience?<br/>Well here it is!<br/>I came 9 months ago, and put it down to new a restaurant and teething issues. <br/>I came back today and nothing has changed, if anything it has become worse. <br/>Look don’t get me wrong, if you like American food, this serves it in batches. The burgers are delicious! The ribs are to die for! DONT GET THE SLAW ITS HORRIBLE!<br/>The service is second to the worst! The staff didn’t know the menu and are very inattentive. <br/>If you wanted to try ribs, this is a great choice.

Went here a few times. The first time was fine - food, service, drinks were on time and served in a friendly manner. The second time the waitstaff heard us wrong and brought one correct order and one wrong one which we didn’t order, which was fine. But we let her know this as soon as the order arrived and nicely, and she took the plate away abruptly, which was needless to say - rude. <br/>Then we decided to give this place another chance and this time it was good - great service again, my food was really really amazing, hits all the right spots, cooked perfectly and I was very, very happy about it (fried chicken). Food-wise: a lot of care is taken to ensure the food tastes amazing, service is amazing only if you got certain staff.

Went here for dinner on a Monday night for takeout. The place wasn’t that busy but it looked like a good place to sit and have a long meal. We ordered two burgers and a side of onion rings. It took approximately 20 minutes for the order to be ready. The staff that served us was pleasant enough and did take our order quickly. The onion rings were the highlight of the meal as it was one of the best I’ve tasted. So crispy and flavoursome. The burgers could have been better, it was a bit too plain unfortunately for the price that we paid. The chicken kitsu hardly has any jam, and the hot burger was unbearably hot to the point that it was not enjoyable. Would like to try this place for breakfast one day but won’t recommend it for burgers<br/>

It was one early Sunday when I was looking for a place to have brekkie around 6:30am and mist if the cafes have not yet opened. All of the sudden, I saw the light coming out from this restaurant so rushed to go in. I was warmly welcome by a friendly staff who asked me for orders after I perused the menu. I decided to go for a western omelette to go with the flat white. Coffee was smooth and well presented. The appreciation was on the omelette. Lots of ham, tomatoes and cheese showed how generous was the chef. Importantly, it was very tasteful and I was glad to come for brekkie. Certainly, I will return in the future. Cheers!

Ate here on a sunday afternoon and I was impressed with the burgers here! Good quality angus beef, perfectly cooked with great flavour. Chips were great too.

Thought we would try out this freshly renovated & leafy new baby for breakfast. We were ushered to a table straight away which was pet friendly. There is a simple breakfast menu & the coffee is very good. My order of the Avant Gard was a vegetarian pattie of kale & quinoa. The addition of the avocado mouse sitting prettily surrounded by piped whirls of hommous with red chillies on top was a winner for me. Partners bacon & egg burger was huge & tasty, but we didn't seem to think the hashbrown was homemade as described, rather greasy & looked like a frozen supermarket version

I've been to this place a few times now- yummy food, a little expensive... but had the worst experience I've ever had a restaurant here. Had some good and a couple of drinks with friends. Went up to pay, and noticed we had an extra two drinks on the bill that weren't ours. We questioned it, and one of the managers basically accused us of lying about it and was extremely rude about it- we ended up having to pay for it anyways because they wouldn't admit that they had messed up, and that the drinks weren't actually ours. Very disappointed in the service, and will not be going back again.
Kdebrincat971
Walked in the door and the service was terrible! A man, Who looked like the manager (poorly dressed without a uniform behind the counter) was so rude to me and my family. In front of other customers he belittled me and proceeded to make me feel stupid for not seeing there please wait to be seated sign. The waitress her self was very good at her job and told us about the surcharge and what was not available on the menu. Too bad that rude man ruined our day. We didn’t even order we were so upset.
Andrew Mangos
Never again!!!<br/>burger was terrible chips just a handful enough to feed a 2 year old.<br/>Only reason for a 1 was the Beer.<br/>Not that the beer was cold by the time it got to me.<br/>I don't understand how a beer can take 15-20 minutes to get while the food took just as long,it's not like the restaurant was busy 10-15 people
ZZQ
Really not a lot to be impressed about. The patties in the burger were very watery which indicates that they were frozen. A small bucket to catch the water dripping out of the water would not have been an exaggeration to describe how watery the patty is. <br/><br/>The flavour in the burger was honestly half decent. Only if it came with a decent patty, a decent bun, and perhaps an overall upsize for the price. <br/><br/>The service felt rather cold and unfriendly. It's difficult to find a reason to visit this place when you have Grill'd down the road serving burgers that are better quality and also comes with friendlier service.

Worst customer service . Never recommend . Disgusting . Staff was so arrogant and not willing to serve .Impolite staff including manager didn't going to make your time wonderful .

Went here as a spontaneous dinner, we were intrigued with the New York menu and ambiance; and thought we would give it a chance. Location is good real estate location and place is well decorated.<br/><br/>Food:We ordered a share board that had crispy pork, ribs and chicken karage with fries and corn for sides as waiters recommendation (we asked for it). <br/>The ribs and the crispy pork had a great tender texture however I personally didn't think the sauce goes with the pork; the sauce was too tangy and didn't match and also I didn't think that was American to have tomato taste in their ribs. The chicken karage with the white sauce was a nice touch and my most enjoyed dish in the share platter. <br/><br/>Service: The first waiter accidentally spilled water on my partners menu and no apologies given. Second server lady was quite rude walking away while we haven't finished ordering and gave us the plates and cutleries stacked up. Then later my partner ordered BBQ sauce for his fries and waitress came back with tomato sauce and we were charge for $1 for the small sauce.<br/><br/>$75 for the share board, fries, corn, BBQ sauce and 1 Brooklyn lager. <br/><br/>Didn't really enjoy our first time in here, I'm sad to say will not share or recommend or come back.

Very overpriced. $33 for 2 tiny ribs and small chips and wasn't anything memorable. Burgers were very average too, definitely better burger joints in Brisbane.

Mid week lunch get together. Started with a few beers which I was advised were standard fare. <br/>Reuben sandwich was my order while the others selected a range of sliders. Whilst the food was good, the service wasn't. Maybe they are just not used to patrons wanting more than one drink.<br/>After having to ask a number of times for more rounds it became a little irritating.<br/>5 Boroughs is not a big establishment and it was obvious that the staff were not really attentive to a table having a good time.

We ordered takeaway and the beef burger was ok but the fish burger was horrible. The burger was so sloppy and fell apart when i tried to eat it, the fish was not crispy at all and halfway through i realised it wasnt cooked all the way through. Theyre on the expensive side for burgers too so disapointing that i didnt even eat it all.

I came here for lunch and had the fish tacos. There were two tacos in the serve so only two small pieces of fish. The tacos looked good and also tasted okay but they were certainly not exciting. There was a spicy sauce in a squeeze bottle on the table but when I saw an ant crawl out the hole in the top I decided not to have any. I had onion rings to share with my dining partner. We both enjoyed them and they came with a nice dipping sauce. Overall, there was nothing wrong with the meal but nothing compels me to return when there are so many great options in Brisbane.

As Americans, we have tasted our fair share of American food. Unfortunately this wasn't what it's like back in he US. I can't quite put my finger on what it is but it's certainly missing something. Burgers are good but the sauce isn't right and it just doesn't hit the mark. Such a shame because it's in a phenomenal location and the atmosphere was fantastic. Needs a little tlc to be menu. Won't be going back for a little while unfortunately. Service was pretty good however. Edit: We had friends go here recently and on two seperate occasions they told us (independent people of each other and attended the restaurant on different days) that there were rats being chased out of he place.

I went there and ordered a burger with bacon and cheese. the burger was totally shit. Beef was not juicy. Chips were also shit. the worst experience that I have had. wont go again. I highly recommend you guys to go to Grilld by this sh*itty restaurant.
Pat
Seriously how poor is this place. Virtually inedible and considering it arrived with a blast its star has fallen very quickly. Avoid it until there is new management or new kitchen staff
Paul Carr
This place has gone from top to bottom in a short space of time. The food was cold and expensive and all they kept saying was Sorry. Never again. $80 for a cold fish taco and a cold burger and fries.

And then I chose crab salad. Well, who wouldn't? I enjoyed this fresh and zingy dish. Thankfully the green leaves as per the menu were lettuce (cos or butter?) rather than the ghastly weeds you mostly get these days. (Join my sister and me in the anti-rocket and other bitter weeds movement.) This salad had radish and fennel, sandcrab and avocado. Delightfully fresh, with some actual crab in it, not just a shred or two. I felt very virtuous eating this rather than a stodgy burger.<br/>And speaking of burgers, Mr P. had the 5B vegan version, filled with a housemade black bean, quinoa and corn patty. Hubby said it needed a sauce (a common refrain of his), and that the patty was a bit bland and needed some spice. Other than that, he enjoyed it.    <br/>Thank heavens these onion rings did not have sweet batter. It was a thin and non-sweet coating on the onion rings with a spicy chipotle sauce. Mr P. and I wolfed these down. The rustic fries were thin and crispy with a choice of mustard or ketchup. You pay $7 for the large size, but regular ($5) did us fine.<br/>There is lots to recommend this place: lively atmosphere, friendly staff, quick service. You can dine in or take away; you have a choice of burgers, tacos and salads as well as slightly unusual items like American BBQ - pork back ribs, beef brisket and short ribs. There is beer on tap, plus cocktails, cider and bottled beers.

Now, Brisbane's greatest "rip off"<br/><br/>Well done 5 Borroughs you've managed to become the biggest rip off in Brisbane.<br/><br/>14 dollars gets you: two small buns with a small piece of undercooked chicken between it, lots of lettuce and some squeezes of mayo - $14.....the mind boggles<br/><br/>5 dollars gets you: a small bowl of fries that hardly make a reasonable serve, fries are OK but nothing to rave about <br/><br/>4.70 gets you:.....wait for it, 270ML bottle of sprite....thats right 4.70 for a 270ml bottle of sprite<br/><br/>I can say anything good about this place, the food was average and I simply can't understand the gushing nature in which others review this place. Maybe I am missing something? I definitely won't be back. Make sure you call you bank manager before visiting as you may need a loan!

Great night out with the family for dinner. Pork ribs were divine. Beef not quite as good. Service was very friendly, prompt and helpful. Definitely coming back.

Burgers were good as usual and so were the Criss cross chips. I've been here a few times and all the times I've had great service from staff except today. There was this lady with glasses , my friend hadn't been there before and therefore asked what the waiter recommends and she replies 'err don't ask me that, if you've been working here as long as I have . You just need to pick what you like' that just set off a bad vibe from the start. if you don't like serving with s smile then don't work in hospitality. Anyways hope you guys don't get served by her

Love this place, always begging my partner to come here. Love the fries, love the burgers, love the onion rings, beer selection is quite good. Love love love!

I have been wanting to try this place since it opened, I was pleasantly surprised by the store it's self, it looks very cool and hopefully will set a precedence for the other stores in racecourse road. As for the food... The burger was the most beautiful thing but unfortunately it just lacked something in flavor? Maybe it was because I had to get take away, or maybe because I was expecting the world but it was just eerrrr nice. In saying that I will definitely be back because I hear the ribs are to die for!

This is my second time going to 5 boroughs and as much as i wanted to enjoy it, i did not. The service was absolutely terrible, the food took over an hour and a half to arrive, staff members were incompetent - lost our order, didn't bring food we had requested,  had the wrong food brought to our table multiple times without any apologies, generally just unfriendly and I think there were some very young staff members who needed to be trained. All we had ordered was burgers and fries - which should be simple to make-  when we complained about how long we had been waiting for the food the staff did not make any effort whatsoever to fix the situation. The manager offered to take our drinks off the bill, but when we received the bill nothing had been removed or changed. Throughout the night no attempts were made to check in with us to see if our food had even been received, and we did not see the manager who we had spoken to again. We did not feel looked after or catered for. Suggesting that either the staff members were not interested in satisfying their customers or  a result of a lack of organisation and communication between managers and waiters. When our food finally did come, the chips were brought out almost 20 mins before the burgers. Burgers and chips are supposed to be eaten together. Food wise, the chips were seasoned well although the burgers were average, nothing special especially considering the wait time and a little bit bland. Honestly the overall experience of the night left a bad feeling.

I live in the local area and decided to check out 5 Boroughs because of its street appeal. Compared to many other Racecourse Road cafes and dining spots, it looks modern and fun and seems to always have a lot of customers.<br/><br/>I ordered the Steamed Bao Buns and two sliders (Chicken and Classic), as well as a side order of Cheese Fries.<br/>My boyfriend ordered the Ice Tea and we where so surprised by the fact that it was bottomless. Most places do not offer this to customers so this was great for us. I ordered a Cappuccino which was nice, but certainly no better or worse than I have had anywhere else.<br/><br/>Firstly, the presentation of the food is delightful. Everything looks very delicious, rustic and colorful. I thoroughly enjoyed my Bao Buns as they are one of my favorite foods. The buns were soft and fluffy and the filling of pork was tender and moist. The sliders were OK and the chicken one was probably my favorite. The avocado was delicious and the salsa gave it a nice taste sensation. I think that I'm probably not a huge fan of Sliders in general so I don't think it was anything that the restaurant failed on, so much as me being a greedy little piggy and wanting more than I had ordered. <br/><br/>My boyfriend ordered the classic with cheese and that was delicious. I was a bit surprised by the fact that the fries were not included. I really think that this is a must for a burger place. Burgers just aren't burger without fries. For our particular situation this wasn't too bad as we ordered the Cheese Fries anyways. These were delicious and very moreish. It was definitely spicy, cheesy and delicious so this definitely delivered on expectations. <br/><br/>As far as the service, this was also great. Our waiter was not intrusive but seemed to pick up on when we did and didn't want service. The Ice Tea was regularly replenished and the food came out quickly and with no fuss or mistakes. <br/><br/>Overall, I had a really really nice experience. I got to watch the people on the busy road, eat some yummy and interesting food and I walked away feeling uncomfortably full. I think that it could be improved by the addition of fries for every main burger ordered. However, I think that between Grill'd and 5 Boroughs, there are some great burger choices now in Ascot.

Good casual place for dinner along racecourse road. Service was very attentive & food was delicious. <br/><br/>The only thing that bothered me was my glass of wine was a bit low. Would definitely go back.

Definitely Not A Burger Destination.<br/><br/>Being Somewhat of a proper burger fiend it was with great delight that we found the much hyped 5 Boroughs almost empty early on a Wednesday Evening. Numerous times we have walked past lines out the door. Having read previous reviews my expectations weren't the highest, but I kept an open mind. <br/><br/>I ordered the 5B Double with a side of fries and my partner the Vegan burger. <br/>First signs of disaster were when the waitress bought out the "Vegan burger with Cheese".. No such thing exists, nor could exist as they don't have Vegan cheese here. They quickly replaced the order however, no worries there. <br/><br/>First taste of the fries left me reaching for my beer as they were the saltiest, most vile concoction I had tasted atop potato for a long while. No one in their right mind could eat those and we love chips in general.  If you got served these in New York you would be sending them back. I didn't however and we ended up not finishing them. <br/><br/>The 5B Double Burger itself was large in stature, although with a sesame seed bun far too small for the meat protruding from it.  A common problem for new players to the burger game.  I am a brioche fan myself and don't think sesame buns belong on a burger but each to their own. The meat itself was poorly seasoned and reminded me of the cheapest mince somehow made into a patty, flavourless, bordering on dry. The dressing and salads bought flooding back memories of late night Hungry Jacks/Burger King style tomato and lettuce.. Not the kind of upper tier topping you expect from a $20 burger..<br/><br/>The gfs Vegan burger was dry as a dead dingo's donger as are many vegan burgers. Its rare that a burger joint does good vegan food and this place is no exception.<br/><br/>Anyways, staff and ambience is all fine and its great to have another burger place  close by, we however wont be stopping by this one. With Grill'd right next door you really do need to offer better food than them to even compete, and this place simply does not, sorry, and that is not even mentioning Brisbanes actual burger destinations..<br/><br/>M

The brunch was not good at all.<br/><br/>Coffee was the worst I'd had for a while. The breakfast looks good but the eggs were over cooked and the greens were sweet. Feel a bit queazy after it. Too much grease?? Good portion sizes though.
Amy Robertson
The service was amazing, and the venue was lovely. I would definitely recommended you try this place out. <br/>I had the sliders, which was average. The burgers were pretty average too, so I would strongly suggest maybe trying something different on the menu if you're after some excitement.<br/>But overall, you cannot top the service. Thanks for a great evening 5 Boroughs Ascot!
VAULTGIRL
Good food and great service. We got a selection of sliders with a side of onion rings and some dumplings. Everything was delicious and came out quickly. Our waiter was lovely and gave us a great recommendation with the dumplings. Looking forward to a return visit.

5 Boroughs do weekend brunch too and the eggs bennie was nice; good coffee and the staff were super friendly. Breakky booze after 10AM too - $10 mimosas.

If I have to say one thing this is the most hospitable place on racecourse road ,food top notch and staff second to none .Hayden ,jen ,Brittney ,and me Ethan

The food was generally tasty, however the management is really going to let this place down, for the following reasons<br/><br/>1. Forcing everyone to wait 20 plus minutes at the bar tables, when there are free tables<br/>2. Taking sandwiches off the menu, and desert off the menu because one of the cooks went home. Surely more than one person in the kitchen can whip up a cuban or pulled pork sandwich, and can slice up a cheesecake.
Dion Sant
Food was ok. Nothing to brag about.<br/>Waiters were nice and polite.<br/>Owner or manager (guy with glasses) acts like a complete jerk, staff are obviously scared of him.<br/>When we asked to split the bill it was like asking the bloke for his 2 lungs.<br/><br/>Never again. Too arrogant. Steer Clear.
Philby Ruready
Awesome food the sliders tasted fresh, had smooth texture and presentation was top notch. Topped off by a waiter who was friendly, personable and efficient. Food and service was so great I even tipped them! Highly recommend!
Food Avenue
The Food Avenue contributors have been busy this month, checking out the latest foodie places. My Brisbane correspondent, Scott Wyatt, takes a look at the latest New York burger place. Nary a year after opening their New York inspired eatery in Stones Corner, Marissa and Todd Clayton have set their sights on the north side of town opening a table serviced version of their '5 Boroughs' eatery on Racecourse Road in Ascot.

The cheese fries with the chilli beef is amazing and the burgers are to die for! Also if you're up for it, the chicken wings with the red rub!!
AteToooMuch
Went to 5 Boroughs on opening night and it was completely smashed, so whilst our orders took a little while to come out I completely understand. <br/><br/>The Burger was fresh, cooked nicely and quite juicy. Cheese melt was excellent. Nice size and I was quite happy with it. Chilli fries were absolutely delicious, and had a nice little kick with a good ooze of cheese sauce. I could have done with more sauce on the fish tacos but other than that we had a great time. Those waffle fries are beautiful!
Scotty
Can't fault this place, fast service, fresh food, reasonably priced. We will be back. Burgers, fries and onion rings up there with some of the best.

Was super excited to check out the new 5 Boroughs so decided to head there recently for a late lunch / early dinner. As you walk in, the place looks pretty trendy, modern decor with a dash of New York style. Weren't many people when we arrived, but it wasn't peak hour so that worked in our favour as the food came out very quickly! We ordered the following:<br/>- Cheesy Fries - Indulgently good, but eat them quickly. Cheesy sauce isn't the best when hard/cold. <br/>- Chicken Tacos - Apparently very tasty and a great way to start the meal. <br/>- Fish Tacos - Found these quite bland and a little disappointing. Not a whole lot of seasoning. Just fish with coleslaw in a soft shell. Avocado was the best/most flavoured part.<br/>- 5B Beef Burger - Amazing! Huge size and very filling. Will make your mouth water. <br/>Overall, it was a half and half kind of meal/experience. Some pro's, some cons. Waiters/waitresses were average as well. Couldn't provide recommendations. They also seemed to be in a hurry to get us to pay, asking "cash or card" before we'd finished eating/drinking. A little odd considering we were one of five table there. Obviously a few teething problems that come with the territory of a new establishment. Would be keen to give it another go once they've got their groove.
Simon Tinkler
Very new - in a hurry to make money fast.  Many items on the menu were not available, Aperol drink mainly soda water, friendly but inexperienced staff pumped up to upsell, good burgers, good but overpriced ribs, smallest side salad for $8 ever seen - waitress spilled liquid on handbag and failed to apologise ... overall very expensive and average .... only day 2 of business so may need to give them more time to get things right.

I'm a big fan of 5 Boroughs in Stones Corner so when I moved northside recently I knew I had to check their new place out. When we visited it was dinner time on their launch night with 2 for 1 burgers, so it was (understandably) quite busy and we had to wait a couple of minutes to get seated. The new premises is really nice - it's warm, relaxing, clean and looks great. I'd recommend a seat at the garden bar, it's probably the highlight of the place for me.<br/><br/>If you're not familiar with 5 Boroughs, they serve mainly American style food with a couple of other interesting and welcome additions to the menu. The food is all made in house so the quality is outstanding. We ordered a few burgers, onion rings and the rustic chips. Onion rings were tasty and very crispy, but let down a little by being overly salted. The rustic chips were really well cooked and seasoned perfectly. The main event was the burgers. We got some doubles and some classics. The burgers were carefully assembled and looked great on the plate. The burgers don't look that huge, but they pack the handmade patties tight so they really fill you up. The burgers were delicious - the patties were really juicy and well cooked, and the other ingredients were really fresh and tasty. The price for food is very reasonable at ~$11-$15 for a burger. This is similar to what you pay at Grill'd or Burger Urge but the burger is much better here.<br/><br/>The staff deserve a special mention. The place was packed to the gills but they were still really attentive and friendly and got our food out to us really quickly. They even managed to hook us up with some tabasco when we requested some hot sauce. (They usually have a nice collection of hot sauces at Stones Corner which was sadly absent from Ascot)<br/><br/>So to sum it all up. If you're jonesing for a burger on the north side of town, 5 Boroughs at Ascot is the place to go. Food is outstanding, service is great and it isn't too hard on your wallet.
