Walking in, a very smiley staff member greeted us :> good start then it followed with fast service and good food.
On the pricier side approx $50 for two (two mains, two coffees) but two happy filled stomachs after :>
Had outdoor and indoor seating.
Only two spots outdoor has undercover so not ideal if u have a doggo and it’s raining.
Only minor downfall that it’s by a major street so cars whizzing by made it a bit hard to make conversation if you sat near the entrance. But this means the place is easy to find :>
Parking is a pain, but it’s inner city so find a friend who lives there and borrow their car park otherwise give the parking gods your money.
Will return
We have been here on multiple occasions and it is a reliably good brunch place. The quality of food has not changed since the first time I visited. They do fusion brunch food well with complementary flavours. The worst thing I could say about the New Black menu is that maybe they err on the safe side in terms of proven flavours. Their changing menu means you don’t often get bored but their chilli scram is a regular favourite.
Went here with a friend for weekend brunch. We ordered cold brew coffees, and ordered the Kimchi Omelette and the Mushroom with additional Smoked Bacon. Innovative and delicious dishes with fresh ingredients.
Casual ambience with indoor and outdoor seating available. It does get busy during weekend brunch, therefore expect at least 30 minute wait for meals. Friendly service. Reasonable prices.
Overall, a good brunch spot providing classic dishes with a creative twist.
Came to try out The New Black's brunch menu and it was really delicious! We ordered the black benny, which actually leaves a black tinge on your lips and teeth after consumption, so you gotta beware of that. Aside from the aesthetic issues that come with consuming this dish, it was really delicious! The bacon was thick and crisp, but I would have preferred it to be less salty. The bread was crispy and chewy and the eggs were done just right. The asparagus lacked a truffle flavour, which was disappointing. Overall, it was a balanced dish, but has room for improvement. Service was good and I would return again to try their coffees.
The new black has one of the BEST coffees in brisbane. Cold brew coffee on NITRO is very tough to beat.
My meal definitely looked better than it taste but overall was very satisfied with my experience here.
Great little coffee place in Bakery Lane. Try the creative coffee creations or a little something to eat. Friendly staff and great atmosphere. You can eat in the shop or at the shared laneway seating.
Not many cafes can brag exceptionally presented and tasty food, that is also generous in serving size and prompt.
The New Black can.
From working in the door to going through the menu and the food (and coffee!) itself, just a genuinely great experience.
The menu features a lot of great classics but all prepared to pack a punch of flavour and great balanced tastes. The coffee by The Black Lab is also top notch and prepared extremely well.
I met a friend here for brunch a few days ago for an overdue catch-up. The café is pretty small and not the most cosy looking place but they were playing cat empire so A++ for ambience.
I had the mushrooms and my friend had the pumpkin and greens. We both really enjoyed our meals and coffees, and the staff member who served us was friendly.
When you have a toddler, priorities shift in what matters in a meal. Do they have high chairs? Is there a kids menu? Is the babyccino frothy enough? The New Black does not have high chairs, or a kids menu, but they do make a mean complimentary babyccino! Well, the toddler wasn't in the mood for eating anyway.
Dinner is tough when one of your dining companions goes to sleep at 7pm, so fancy breakfast is my main weekend meal now. So I better get reviewing again.
I really enjoyed my green breakfast plate. I loved the salty crispy fried shallot roots and the masses of tender broccoli and asparagus. I felt like a satisfied saint (and not the martyr kind) after eating that gorgeous and delicious meal due to the amount of green in it. The double shot cold drip was utterly divine on a warm Brisbane spring morning, I wanted another but thought I may never sleep again, so decided against it.B had the special which involved fried broccoli and grey paint-like sauce. I thought it looked repulsive but he assured me it was quite delicious.
Service was really friendly. You pay at the counter when ordering. There was a lot of outdoor seating in the adjacent laneway but we sat inside on the corner bench seating and still got to enjoy some of the morning sun through the big window.
Thank you for a lovely morning.
Friendly staff, great food, and best take on match latte I've ever had!! Hubby had their nitrogen infused cold brew coffee which was amazing, it looked like beer!!
My partner and I stumbled onto this little place in Bakery Lane. Worth it!! Great to see variations to the things you would find on a breakfast menu. Great work and love the coffee art.
This place is a must. Had the most beautiful breakfast. Coffee is amazing, service 5*, alround fantastic. Well done to the team.
First time dining at The New Black and honestly we did feel a bit disappointed.
On arrival, a very friendly and bubbly staff member greeted us and led us to our table. We grabbed our usual soy flat white and skinny cappuccino. We both thought the coffee was sitting a bit more on the bitter side, which wasn’t really for our likings.
Food wise, I had their Fried Chicken Benny and my boyfriend ordered their Build Your Own. Starting with mine, I thought the fried chicken was tasty but was not as crispy as the would have liked it to be; the poached eggs were amazing and I really loved the picked red cabbage, sweet and sour and complimented the chicken; the sourdough was alright but I wish they had had the option to swap sourdough with waffle ( I strongly recommend it). The Build Your Own was better than my Benny, consisting of scrambled eggs on rye, mushrooms and bacon with tomato relish on the side. The bacon was thick cut and pan fried flawlessly, charred here and there but not burnt; the mushrooms were juicy and refreshing; the scrambled eggs were tender. We especially loved the tomato relish and thought it was a nice touch to the dish.
Service wise, I thought it was brilliant. Everything was smooth and the coffees and food were served in a timely fashion. It was a bit busy and I recommend you make a booking prior to going, especially during the weekend.
All in all, it was a good experience and we will go back for a second try and hopefully it will be better next time
The size of the dishes is sufficient for brunch. The pickled cabbages are too salty tho. I couldn’t finish the dish without picking them out.
Googled places for brekky and this came up. I had the fried chicken Benny - just because it was something different. Yum. Highly recommend it. Staff were friendly, and coffee was good.
Friendly, pleasant staff. The BEST coffee we had from 3 days in the Valley, by far - hotter, stronger, more body & a great wake-up☕ Had the toastie (delicious & spicy) plus chorizo burger which was really tasty but beat me in size. Thanks again The New Black team :)
The staff are so lovely.
The food was delicious. We ordered chillies scrambled and grilled mushroom.
The coffee was perfectly roasted.
Downside was, finding a parking on the street was a painfully going circle. Unless you want to pay $23/HR at the secure car park.
