It was one night last month to have a dinner in a group of three here.
We selected the dinner package for four, which included steamed chicken, steamed vegetable with oyster sauce, pipi in black bean sauce, Peking pork spare ribs and steamed fish fillet.
CP is very high compared to the price charge and the food that is served. Overall taste is good and so as the portion. Heroes should be the pork ribs and the steamed fish fillet. Pork ribs are tenderized with balanced sweet and sour sauce. Love to see the fish fillet that it serves. Importantly, it is not the bland bass fillet! If the chicken can be more tenderized then full mark is really deserved.

The food is always delicious here, we are regulars! We always get the hainan chicken rice, seafood hot pot or hofun or chow mein. The gai lan with garlic I ordered tonight was very good!

Went here with the family for a weekday dinner.

We ordered an oriental laksa, chicken laksa, hainanese chicken, braised tofu hotpot and kung pao spicy chicken with peanuts.
The laksa broth was flavourful with generous servings of seafood/chicken and a good mix of thick egg noodle and thin rice noodle (my brother reckons it's one of his favourite laksa dishes).
Hainanese chicken was moist and delicious - a definite classic.
The hotpot was warm and filling - generous amounts of beef, mushrooms and tofu.
The kung pao chicken was good, although was missing the spice that we were looking forward to.

Reasonable prices. Service was a little slow - it took awhile for someone to notice us ready to order. Casual ambience. Pour your own water and hot tea services near the counter.

Overall, a reasonable restaurant for Chinese cuisine - recommend the laksa and Hainanese chicken.

Was looking for a Chinese breakfast with Dad and stumbled across here. Menu is simple with the usual offerings (chicken sticky rice parcels, radish cake, BBQ pork buns etc). congee comes in 3 choices and includes an egg noodle side dish, bread/dough stick and a warm drink for about $10. Exactly what we wanted and it had plenty of seating. Will definitely be back again.

Reading a review by Ronnielui2003 last month reminded me to return here to update my February ‘18 review. Sunnybank Oriental is popular with patrons needing a quick, simple and cheap Cantonese meal. So if you are after live seafood you are in the wrong restaurant!

There are good wholesome meals to be had for under $10 but Phuong Tran and I decide on a Set Meal for 2 at $37.90. We get to select two main meals and it is served with a House Soup, Blanched Choy Sum and two bowls of rice.

*Hainan Chicken is a deboned Size 12 chook and is poached perfectly. It’s their Signature Dish and is very popular. I have rated this dish 4.5 for two years for taste and value.

*Black Bean Pork Ribs is a tad bland. It needs more seasoning and as a personal preference, more sliced chilli. Unfortunately, the Pork has been tenderised too long in sodium bicarbonate and the meat has lost its texture. I end up eating most of this dish as it’s not to PT’s taste.

The House Soup is tasty and is served warm, not steaming hot. The blanched vegetables with a side of Oyster Sauce is good. Overall, a decent meal at a reasonable price and we will be back.

I am a longtime customer of Sunnybank Oriental and have been eating here for over 8+ years with my family. I have noticed that recently there has been much discussion over a management change, so I decided to go for dinner and see for myself if anything had changed.

My family and I ordered six dishes: the dry fried ho-fan with beef and bean sprouts, the beef brisket chow mein, the beef and vegetable chow mein, the char kway tiew, the salted pork and preserved duck egg congee and the 京都排骨 (not sure how to say in English).

I judged my review on 3 things: speed, taste and price. Firstly, I timed how long it took for our food to come out - it took only 8 minutes for the the first 2 noodle dishes to arrive! My family and I were very impressed at the kitchen’s efficiency. The other dishes shortly arrived, however the congee arrived about 10 minutes after the last dish had come.

The food was very flavourful and nice, my family and I enjoy eating here because it tastes like home style cooked food. At dinner I particularly enjoyed the congee - a staple in our family.

Lastly, the price was very affordable. With the (mostly) $8.90 tea set menu in action from 5-6 and the majority of dishes pricing at under $20 - this place will not break the budget.

I would recommend Sunnybank Oriental to people who enjoy quick, efficient and tasty cooking. Some of my dish recommendations would be the char kway tiew, salt and pepper squid and the combination chow mein. I feel like this is a little piece of Hong Kong in Brisbane! Enjoy 😊

Much has been written of this old time favourite. Sunnybank Oriental - also know as Doong Fawng in Cantonese, meaning Eatern Direction - is a place of understated wonder. There is no pretentious, no trying too hard and no attitude. Just food.

Meals here are large in size and low in price. The fare is of particular appeal for expat Hong Kongers: my father, who has been living here in Australia for the last 40 years, was particularly surprised with the food and how it reminded him of some of the dishes of old that he had when he was back in HK.

Service: prompt and no nonsense. Help yourself to hot tea or cold water from the drink station near the kitchen window. There is also a further counter with a few choice condiments.

Menu: extensive yet not the usual blandness of the typical suburban Australian Chinese restaurant. You also have the choice of combination meals consisting of dishes from two different set lists that come with soup, rice and a veg dish ($37 for two people).

Food: generally speaking the food is a little underseasoned, which is fine as is not hard to add a little salt or soy sauce. The flavouring on all of our meals was subtle and pleasant with good wok hei (or wok 'breath': the smokey flavour imparted from stir frying on hot seasoned steel).

Steamed chicken with dried lilly flowers (gum jum) and wood ear fungus (mook yii) - great texture on the chicken; my only complaint/ needs more lillies and fungus.

Fried fish and tofu braise - firm fish, Chinese mushrooms and fried tofu braised in a velvety sauce. Served piping hot in a clay pot. Simple and delicate in flavour. Very wholesome.

Plain stir fried noodles, with garlic chives and bean sprouts ($9) - food for the masses: comforting, aromatic and easy to eat. Filling and no frills.

Pei daan sau yuuk jook - a HK classic: congee with preserced egg and pork. This was served in a claypot and garnished with deep fried noodles flakes. Clean tasting and rich in flavour at the same time. Just delightful! According to my dad, cooking in the claypot enhances the silky texture of this dish.

Hainamese Chicken - the chicken was velvety smooth and with just the right amount of chew to the meat. Sauces were basic but pleasant. Rice was not as flavoursome as it could be and the accompanying soup was fancy (contained some wun yii/cloud fungus) but plain in taste.

Verdict: excellent value for money. Great for a walk down memory lane for Hong Kong people. The food may not suit people with Western tastes.

This is great, cheap, lively and tasty - like being in Hong Kong without all the yelling 😂 I always get beef brisket, either with sounp, noodles or rice. The brisket has bits of tendon in there too which is good for you! Also like the hainanese chicken. They have some good value meal sets for families and tea time specials too.

I have been there two times, and happy with every single dish I ordered. Except for the salt n pepper calamari, tasted bland. Their hainanese chicken rice is really authentic, so is the beef brisket noodle soup, got plenty of beef that I couldn’t even finish. Second time ordered laksa, again generous serving size, and great flavour! It’s a great place for some comfort food with reasonable pricing as well.

Great Chinese food and variety and reasonable priced. This place is my little guilty pleasure for Chinese good especially salt n pepper soft shell crab which is just addictive. Not the most glamorous dinning experience but the food makes up for it well and truly. Definitely worth checking out and trying a variety of dishes if you can finish the portions as they are very decent.

@sunnybankoriental.bne is a Hong Kong style restaurant is located in the Sunnybank Plaza and it’s an absolute gem! I have walked past this restaurant so many times but never got the chance to try it out until this time and I gotta say, I’ve been missing out 😭 I realised Google maps didn’t show the location correctly - it’s located where the CBA ATM is 😌 The restaurant is quite spacious and got a lot of seating, so if you have a bigger group don’t worry, you’ll be fine! And remember, Chinese food is always best shared 🥰 The menu is HUGE! So many options to choose from! Here’s what we got : • Peanut butter toast • Chicken w Chinese wine • Yummy pork ribs in clay pot • Preserved egg congee • Dry stir-fry beef ho-fun • Oriental Char kway tiew • Bread sticks • Salt and pepper quail • Salt and pepper calamari • Marinated duck • Water spinach w oyster sauce Not all these dishes are pictured but you can see how good everything was! We loved the food. The flavours were great and the portion size for the price was very good! 💯

We really love to go there with the 2 dishes special meal which Including two bowls of soup and rice. Extra one dollar for the fried garlic vegetables. You can choose 2 dishes from the wide range of option. All the seafood like Pipi, softshell crabs or calamari are my favourite. Besides, their tea time special is from 5-6pm. The early bird dinner including a drink as well. Highly recommended. Never make me disappointed.

Not very Pricy and a lot of choice of Hong Kong cuisine in the menu, however the restaurant do need to have some deep cleaning as the floor is very oily and slippery.
