Tried the vegan fish burger from here. Pretty amazing how they can make a fish-less fish burger that actually tastes pretty good! The price is reasonable and I definitely would come back here again as I really enjoyed it.
Showing a family friend around Brisbane, they announced that they would live a good feed of Fish & Chips.
I took a leap of faith and decided to check out Swampdog just behind Southbank on Vulture Street.
Parking was difficult, but the parking fairies were on my side for once and we eventually found a park in this difficult area of South Brisbane.
We decided to order the Yummy Tummy pack for $22.50 and a few extra prawn cutlets.
We sat outside at one of the tables under an umbrella and enjoyed the sunshine while we wait for our meal. When they gave us our order, it looked and tasted amazing.
The whiting fillets were very tasty, but the star of the meal were the amazing prawn cutlets. So juicy and the batter seemed to be almost like a tempura.
The salt & pepper squid was very very SALT & PEPPER!
Now, I usually feel like crap after eating all that greasy food, but after this meal I was content but not feeling like I just swallowed a bucket of sludgy oil!
If I want fish and chips the next time I am around Southbank or West End, I know where to head!
The only thing that disappointed me was the menu board was poorly presented, and it felt a like the place needed a bit of a clean up or reno, but the product was amazing.
Yummo barramundi battered like I've never had. The batter was extremely thin and crispy with the perfect amount of salt. The portions were overly generous for me and I ended up leaving nearly all of the chips. I would have preferred the chips to be cooked longer, but that is my preference-should have asked. Time for a nap now with a full belly on a rainy Brisbane day.
Always awesome! The Cajun fish is my favourite with the chips and Greek salad. It's so big, you could share it with someone and order a little something else to split. Love the lemonade!
I really enjoy this place. We get takeaway often from here and it's always enjoyable. I enjoy the hungry tummy seafood package. Really great to see that they've just introduced a few vegan meals. I think that's probably the first fish n chips shop I've seen to do that. Very admirable. Would definitely recommend this place.
Always interesting and fabulous food. In addition Richard is practically a national treasure to sustainable fishing and bringing it to the city. Bless you.
Fish and chips were nice and crispy, the serving was small for the price tag ~$22 but the flavours were great! Where is the chicken salt?! Good service, clean restaurant and a cute chessboard area to wait for the food!
Yep, I really do like this place, I would go more often but I find the food is over-priced unless you are eating a special.... Its good, really good. Its just you can get cheaper and plenty of places do good fish n chips
Diana. Great seafood fresh & delicious what more can I say!!
Fantastic fish, chips and salads. I loved the Asian slaw and the pineapple salsa that came with my mackerel. Delicious!
Best fish and chips in Brisbane - FACT. Cannot believe the very few stupid comments i am reading regarding this place.
I have been to many fish and chip restaurants between Melbourne and Cairns over the last couple of years on my holidays and i have got to say this is BY FAR THE VERY BEST. From the staff service and general customer attention to the crisped fried batter and mouthwatering juicy fish. I am now a regular there now whenever in Brisbane and would recommend this to anyone who appreciates what real fish and chips should taste like.
Good fish and chips. Seriously awesome bettered fish, it's light and fluffy and not like any other battered fish you've had. All the grilled menu is also delicious - macerate cutlet with salad was yum. The battered fish doesn't travel well so make sure you eat in or are very close by if you're irdering battered.
Happy every time. I am surprised to read the recent poor reviews of swampdog. I have never been disappointed with this place. Fresh seafood with great sides. Free lemonade is a lovely touch also. Will continue to travel over the river for this place.
Good fish and perfect chips. Went here with friends for dinner. The Market Special of Cajun grilled fish, chips and greek salad is superb! Would recommend this place for a different take on the regular fish & chip option! Yummy lemonade to go with a fresh and tasty meal!
Worth the $$$. Fancy fish and chips is how I would describe the food at Swampdog. I ordered the grilled barramundi with pesto and chips - the fish was cooked to perfection and the pesto was to die for! The meals are a lot smaller than your average fish and chip shop but it does fill you up without leaving the greasy, heavy feeling in your tummy. Worth the money and the nightmare of finding parking around the shop!
Much good, very fish. I had the tempura basket and it was really nice. A liiiiitle overpriced for the amount that we got but all in all very tasty.
Much nom.
Consistently great!. I've eaten here a few times now, on different days and during different mealtimes. And I've got to say, this place is the most consistently impressive fish and chip joint out.
Their menu selections (particularly the specials board) are unique and innovative, yet they also have the traditional fare to suit the less adventurous. The staff are always friendly and willing to have a chat and a laugh or make a recommendation. Prices are extremely reasonable, the food tastes super fresh, and portions are large - generally too large to finish! They also practice sustainable fishing, so you're supporting a good cause and eating guilt-free.
Best looking fish and chip store with the nicest staff and the most friendly owner. I wish I had the need to go out for fish and chips all the time so I could be at Swampdog 24/7
Appealing Narrative Brah

Eeeets Brah. This is hands down the most unique fish n chips I've been to in Aus. Delicious and reasonably priced food. Dardy free lemonade!
Unique take on fish and chips. This place is a bit expensive for a fish and chips place, but they do have some interesting dishes, different from your usual fish and chips place. I like their salt and pepper squid. The outdoor seating is nice but if it's raining you're screwed because there is only one big table inside.
Superb. Who could have thought that the average fish and chips we all are so used to, has been transformed into this hipster, urban and cool vibrant restaurant. Free home made lemonade goes well with gourmet fusion style fish and chips topped with their secret Asian salad and sauce... exquisite.
After divulging down the last crumb, we were completely satisfied- until our cravings took over and suddenly we were ordering another amazing dish. Absolutely mouth watering.
Good things happening. I really like what these guys are doing and the food is always packed full of flavour. The only thing that I don't get is why the food is served in takeaway packaging when it's pitching itself as eco-friendly seafood.
Best 'fish & chips' in Brisbane AND the coolest.
Gluten free and yummy! our new favourite!. After the famous Fish Bar disappeared (oh, they are still there but not good anymore) from Kangaroo Point we were searching for good fish & chips for some time. We just discovered the Swampdog today and it is our new favourite F&C now. We usually order a few plates of grilled fish (gluten free) and chips and some regular F&C because of some diet restrictions. A guy informed me that Swampdog uses gluten free batter for all the F&C! Oh what a joy! We had Barramundi F&C ($ 15 or 16) as a guy recommended and they were so yummy.
Oh, I almost forgot to mention that there were 2 ipads with games you can use while waiting and free lemonade!!!
We will go back there again for sure. It is worth a drive!
They stuffed up my order and it arrived ten minutes later than my mates, and it was not at all what I had ordered, but it was delicious! Don't know what it was called, since I didn't order it, but it was a meaty fish cooked perfectly sitting on a bed of butter lettuce and covered with an eggplant salsa. Really tasty. And I really liked the ambience out back, think of a chilled out, fun backyard party with tables made out of old doors and lighting creating a fun relaxed atmosphere. Definitely will go back and when I order, i'll just say "surprise me."
Great food, service, and waiting area. The only con would have to be that in a piece of fish/calamari/squid, there is about 30%fish, 70% batter. But it's so delicious that it's almost worth the extra calories of eating only the batter/crumbs. The aioli whether herb or lemon, are amazing! Have been a few times :-)
Seriously excellent fish and chips. Raises the bar, great inspiring menu combinations and locally sourced seafood! Friendly staff and nice outdoor area for a casual BYO beer with dinner.

Amazing!. Wow! Came in on Sunday afternoon for a late lunch and was highly impressed with the service, food and vibe of this hidden gem! Congratulations on delivering the best barra and chips I have had in a very, very, long time! Love the added touch of a drink of homemade lemonade for a "like" on Facebook! We will definitely be back!
Great stuff. Fantastic fish and chips done with style. Fish was cooked perfectly and the pesto was clearly made fresh. I will be back.
Goodness to be found here..
Flathead perfection. Swampdog takes the bait for the best fish & chips in Brissy.
A fresh take on an old favourite, the Swampdog team take an eco-friendly approach to seafood. They only sourcing produce from sustainable fishing practices.
Richard, the owner, is the real deal; a genuine fisherman. Who else would you want cooking your fish?
Flathead is my personal piscatorial choice. Often a difficult fish to source. Swampdog makes the search easy with their iPhone / iPad app, sending updates for catch of the day. Brilliant for those waiting for their favourite fish!
Eat your fish & chips in a friendly, no-frills, atmosphere. Enjoy your meals are served in 'planet-friendly' packaging. BYO to boot, bring your own glasses for vino or use their environmentally sound paper cups.
Swampdog places gets the double thumbs-up for great food, service and a sustainable approach to fishing!
YUM. Best Fish and chips I've had for a while. Best eaten there asap, batter will be soggy if taken-away.
Not your average fish & chips place. With a simple Japanese fusion menu, this place has both cosy outdoor and indoor seating options. BYO alcohol, or you can have their free & delicious lemonade. I tried their special, which was a seared soy cured mack tuna w/ wasabi pea mash, roast peppers & wakame, and it was nothing short of amazing. As my friend commented, 'if they made the quantity about 1/4 and put it on a nice plate then they could call it fine dining and charge $40 for it'. I believe that this is my new favourite fish & chips that I'd happily travel miles for.
Perfect! Never had fish and chips this good!
Favourite new place. I have tried a number of things here and everything has been very delicious. My favourite is the tempura whiting as well as the popcorn prawns. I have brought all different types of people and everybody has loved it. The decor of the restaurant is exactly what you want a real fish and chip shop to be - you can almost smell the fresh sea breeze. I love that everything is sustainably fished. I will keep coming back!
Fantastic fish and chips with plenty of more exotic options. Loved the sardines on sourdough and my partner loved his whole baked snapper with mango salsa. Relaxed and friendly . We'll be back
Good fish. Good chips. Not enough salt. Parking the only issue but worth the walk.
Nice dawgy!. Love it! This place is great - my new favourite seafood place. Two of us went and both had battered fish and chips - both dishes perfect and everything very fresh - but there's lots of fancier stuff too including daily specials. Prices are reasonable - fish and chips started at $9.90 but the barra, calamari and crab dishes are good value too. Top price the day we were there was $16.90. Layout is very casual - a big communal table inside and a couple of outdoor tables. Also the food is served in cardboard packs with disposable wooden cutlery so don't expect anything too flash, apart from the food. The free homemade lemonade is a nice touch - and delicious.
Quintessentially Vulture St.. I had heard about Swampdog from a few different people recently and loving fish and chips had to try it out. So glad I did. In the end I ordered one of their specialty meals- tempura whiting with ginger prawn mousse and asian salad. My friend stayed with the fish of the day and chips with a side of salt and pepper squid. All were superb. We ate outside which was perfect for a summer's evening under the pretty string lights- fabulous food, fabulous atmosphere and so cheap!
Fantastic little joint with excellent quality and excellent value. So good to see how well they've done, in such a short space of time. Will be telling one and all about this treasure!
Extensive menu with fresh, tasty ingredients. We visited for lunch last week. At first we were a bit worried because 1. the location makes it a bit difficult to get a park and 2. there were 3 staff on but only one other customer. However I think this was only due to the time we visited (around midday) as by the time we left there were quite a number of people poreing through the doors.
Menu was quite extensive and a number of items are new to the typical Brisbane fish shop menu. I had the octopus and greek salad and he had the perch and chips. Both were perfectly cooked and delicious, and the ingredients used were really fresh. We were offered free homemade lemonade which was a lovely gesture. Prices were reasonable for the quality of food and service was friendly and welcoming. Overall I have been looking for a fish shop replacement for West End's Seagrass and I think I've found it!
Wonderful. It isn't super cheap fish and chips but in terms of an easy yummy meal in the south bank area, the prices are right. The free lemonade is also a perfect touch on a hot summer evening.
I couldn't fault the food and enjoyed the atmosphere.
My only qualm is with the plates and cutlery when you dine in. There is a lot of talk about sustainability and the environment and yes the plates, cups and cutlery are "environmentally friendly" disposable choices. I can't help but think it be much friendlier to use real plates, knives and forks and wash them up after use.
All good. This review based on one quick dinner so the jury not back yet but first impressions only.
Great simple fit out and concept. The food (basic f & c and a tempura prawn and sald dish) were excellent. Light crisp and tasty all round.
The only slight negatives are location (in terms of parking and access) and I think maybe the serves need to be a little bigger for the money however we will be back for more. (and a longer review)
Best fish and chips in brisbane, healthy and full of flavour.
Congenial, friendly staff. Free homemade lemonade in 100% compostable cups. Funky interior, with red feature wall and open declaration that they are eco friendly and conscious of the effect of overfishing. Just read their wall and find out for yourself. Lemon aioli and (non hot) chilli jam were fantastic. I am recommending this place to my friends. I will take guys here on dates. And so close to southbank, with reasonable prices. Fantastic decor.
Rejoice!. As locals to the south Brisbane area we are sooooo excited to say hello to Swampdog. Fabulously diverse menu, innovative fit out and most importantly, the best fish and chips we have had in Brisbane. Fluffy, crispy batter, large portions and salad options to allay some of the artery clogging. The BYO beer is a great touch. This is our new favourite cheap and cheerful. Cheers!
