Review Newmarket Hotel - Brisbane

There is something for everyone on their menu. The specials are worth a look and try. The prices are reasonable and the tables are not crammed in. The staff is young but they are very able and friendly and definitely deliver on service and friendliness. The food was also great.

The staff here were very kindly and very helpful with explaining how to use the online menu and how to apply my discount card. The food came out quite fast and was generally good. I ate it quite fast also as I didn't have time to take a photo. I had the Wagyu beef with chips and calamari topper. I'm not sure if it was a coincidence but I suffered very painful food poisoning the following which I can only attribute to the calamari as it was the only odd thing I ate that day before. Otherwise it was a pleasant pub and nice enough atmosphere.

Food was yummy, took quiet awhile to get our drinks 20 minutes, that was a bit frustrating, especially when we could see them sitting on the bar. I would have picked them up myself but decided carrying them wasnt an option. When we asked if we could have our drinks the waitress answered yer yer yer. I was a bit stunned to be honest. I hope staff out with covid was the culprit for the slow drinks service. Ill see what happens next time Im at the Newmarket pub.

We needed an easy and satisfying dinner after a full day of flood clean up. We were so pleased with our food and the service tonight! We had our two boys with us, who both loved their kids meals. We were happy with the value - the meals were big and there was a drink and dessert included. We were also really happy with our adults’ meals. The veal schnitzel was a standout. The biggest win was the service. All the staff were friendly, helpful and kind to us and our kids. Exactly what we needed after a tough couple of days! Thank you!

We had our daughters first birthday here yesterday. Ara and the team did such a fantastic job at decorating and making sure everything was perfect. Drinks were great and food was even better. Thank you so so much for helping us celebrate our girls birthday! We will be back soon!

We went to the bar area where you can get the same food as in the dining area. Bar area is less noisy, food and drinks came quickly, and we enjoyed our stay. It's popular over lunch time during the weekends. We have gone there a few times and like the place.

We had to make very last minute plans with a fairly large group (15). Weren’t able to get a reservation in the bistro as it was booked but they still found room close by for us. When people left the bistro the staff allowed us to move to a table down there. They were extremely accommodating and I am so thankful. Everyone went above and beyond and therefore I can not fault the service and the food was delicious. When we moved to the bar, Greg looked after us as well and made our night better. He even took group photos for us. Thank you Newmarket and the team there this night. Very appreciative.

Great place for dinner or drinks or both, whether for two, a group or a party. Good variety of food to choose from. Heaters on the deck to keep one warm on a cold chilly night. Staff were friendly and helpful.

It is unbelievable that my first and also the last visit of this hotel was over 30 years ago. It was my first buffet dinner in Brisbane. Time is flying. I re-visited it for Sunday lunch for its first review of mine.<br/>It was a busy lunch and service seemed to be chaotic but it settled down after more causal staff came back for work.<br/>Ordered a risotto with chicken and mushroom and a share broad. Even though it was full house, kitchen’s production rate was good. It did not take a long time to have our dishes on the table.<br/>Risotto was a let down with too much sauce that made the risotto sounded like a Chinese congee. If the chef can reduce the amount of onions in the risotto, it’s taste will not all cover by the onion. On the other hand, CP of share broad is good with duck spring rolls, prawn twisters, cheese sticks, calamari and bbq pork ribs. Love the prawn twisters and the spring rolls but the rest is just average. <br/>Overall experience is alright and not as impressive as the buffet that I had here long time ago.<br/>Rating 3.5/5

It is really lovely that Mr and myself get to go for dinner dates almost weekly now since the in-laws are able to look after Grace. That also means visiting more restaurants! As Grace has an early bed time around 7pm, we had to have dinner around 5 pm (ya, it is pretty early..) but we do not mind. 😀 For starters, we tried their Newmarket Calamari ($15). It came with garden salad and garlic aioli. The calamari was tasty and tender. We certainly wished there were more pieces on the plate.

Great food and service! Value for money. Highly recommend as a venue for lunch and dinner. Only recommendation is that they need to get cooking their steaks correct - but the red wine jus sauce was the best I've tasted.

Terrible service waited 15 minutes to be seated and a further 15 minutes to be asked am i ready to order. Then a further 30 minutes for my steak to be served. I didn't even get asked if i wanted a drink. It was 1pm for lunch and it was not even that busy.. very very poor experience and i will be advising any one not to dine there as i will never return.

The food was horrible, absolutely disgusted. Service was poor and the food took forever to deliver. My girlfriend ordered a median rare steak and she got a rare one. I ordered the fish, and it tasted like I just went and bought a fish from a seafood market and took a bite on it. The quality of the food was just so horrendous and the price of the food was so expensive.

You know what really gets my goat?  When you're standing at the bar, acknowledged by the bar staff as the next person to be served, and then they end up serving 3 or 4 people who rock up after you, pretending you aren't there.  Once you finally get served, the beer isn't the cheapest.  Whipping out more than $20 for 2 schnooers at a suburban pub wasn't the best feeling.  I'm an old regular at the Newmo and love the steaks in the restaurant, but after a year or so away it's a shame that the service and prices have decided to punch a bit above their weight.

Overpriced terrible poor quality food. Had dinner here in a group, I had the salmon which was supposed to served on mash, but whatever it was it wasn't potato. Are they serving deb or glue? My boyfriend's fettuccine (not fresh) was cut up in pieces? The service was poor and slow. What a waste of money and digestive space.

Went up for wednesday steak night. Had the t- bone and have had the rib fillet previously. Cooked meduim rare and tasted great. Veggies and sauce no complaints. Well priced nice venue with fast service and friendly staff. Keen to go to their snitty night in the future (tuesdays).

We arrived with a group on Friday evening and waited for over an hour from order to service and only after we complained about the wait. Groups arriving after us were served first. The Crispy Skinned Pork Belly Salad consisted of 4 tiny slivers of limp undercooked meat on a bed of very ordinary green leaves and a some pieces of capsicum with a drizzle of bland dressing - no cashews or anything exciting as described. All this for $25. The Lamb Rump consisted of a minuscule piece of suprisingly well cooked lamb with almost no spice on a compacted mound of rice, 2 stalks of broccolini and very little mint joghurt ($26).  On the plus side, they did give us the Pork Belly salad  for free after we complained but we left feeling totally unsatisfied and let down. The service staff were fine but badly let down by the "cooks". An experience not to be repeated. To quote my wife as we left "Well, that was totally underwhelming".

Mid week dinner with a group of friends. Service was friendly without being over the top. Large menu choice including the chain-pub Graziers steak range. Our group had a variety of dishes and most were well received. Steaks were a little underdone however. Was about 10 mins between the first plate and last plate coming out though, which was a bit disappointing. I had the FOD - barramundi which was nice but nothing spectacular. Good size orations and fairly standard pub prices (approx $30/main). A decent meal which we would return for.

I'm a little shocked at all the negative reviews previously posted. I recently dined here last week for a casual lunch with a friend and found the food to be great and fantastic value. They have a number of lunch specials to choose from. The staff were friendly and since I enjoyed it so much I returned on the Saturday night with my partner for dinner. The restaurant was busy and the whole pub had a really nice atmosphere. We shared a bruschetta and I ordered the lamb and my partner a steak. The meals were delicious, the portions are a good size and both were cooked to our liking (mine medium and his rare). Overall, I think this is a great pub in the suburbs and I can see why it draws a great crowd on the weekends. Will definitely return soon.

Not being from the Northside I found myself wandering into this awesome place. WOW! I am well impressed with the food and the friendly service. Kids welcomed and hipsters too. Will definitely be back for their steaks!

Went there for dinner with friends and we all had a great time. Nice atmosphere and good food presentation, my steak was cooked to perfection which is something you don't always get with pub food. Staff were friendly and very attentive. Will definitely be going back in the near future!!

Has an odd menu.. I'm not too sure what they were going for there.. The food is okay. Some of the prices are unreasonable. The service is good. The seating area feels somewhat unwelcoming although. Good place to catch up over some drinks only though

Went for a Thursday lunch. Typical pub lunch fare - ended up going for the chicken Parma. Definitely overpriced compared to other pub parma's I've had.
Scott Wakerley
If overpriced, flavourless food is your go then this is the place for you. They wanted to charge me nearly $10 for a beer and couldn't even fill the glass. After complaining the "We'll see you next time" comment just said it all really.AVOID.
Renee Lawrence
Overpriced, average food. Definitely not worth the full priced menu cost on the Friday night- might not have been so disappointed with a $14.90 steak on a Monday.<br/>I was kicking myself as I know of other pubs in the area that serve equally if not nicer meals for a third of the price.
Leonie
Rude staff, overpriced food. Go somewhere else. Came here for lunch and a few quiet drinks, I had the fish and chips on the lunch menu. The fish was okay, very dry despite being battered, the chips were soggy and discoloured, the lettuce in the salad was wilted and the carrot was obviously old and dry. <br/>The waitress accidentally charged another table our bill, so our bill was mixed up a bit, there was no apology or proof from the waitress just a blunt you still have to pay all of the amount owing, no you can't split the bill (which was now an addition of multiple different items)and a very terse response when asked to explain the bill again. Proof would have been nice as some people from our table had left early. She was very rude and this seemed to be a common theme throughout most of the wait staff that served us. <br/>I was with my husband and our mates who are all in the army and had just been to dawn service and marched in the Anzac day parade so we were very tired and looking forward to a nice relaxing afternoon. This place was a bit of a let down, I hope they pick up their game in the future. If the waitstaff don't like dealing with people and have no idea how to respect people they should find a new job!!

Bad staff and average food.. Have been here multiple times and the odd staff member is pleasant but quite a lot are not interested in being there and I've had a couple of them with extremely bad attitude. Food is OK but way overpriced.

Poor service. Noisy on Sunday & terrible service. Staff tried to race off n clear tables. Never asked if we'd like dessert at all. Had to keep tryin grab their attention. Shocking service.

Good but left a bad taste. My partner and enjoyed a casual Sunday meal there for the first time since recently moving to the area.<br/>The meal and service was very good right up until we were ready to leave. As the manager had taken our order, when we went to pay, we were surprised that our order didn't exist. The young girl serving was honestly apologetic and was doing her best to help us while trying to seat the people who'd lined up behind us. We were ask to sit back down, after that we watched as the girl passed the issue to her and manager and then watched as the manager walked back and forth without even acknowledging us. At one stage it looked like the young girl had to redirect her managers attention back to us. After 5-10mins the manager approached us with the bill with a simple "sorry about that guys, here you go' and placed the bill on the table. I approached her and apologised said we'd had a lovely meal but thought it was a bit unfair that we were ready to go and had to sit back down while they sorted out a mess that wasn't on us. Over the top of me she asked if I'd like her to remove the garlic bread to which I replied 'what ever you can do that's within your power' as we were now running late for a movie. She deducted the garlic bread, retrieved my change from the till with an air of attitude and said something along the lines of 'here you go, sorry about that' and then said 'hope you enjoy your movie'.<br/><br/>For me working in the industry, I feel you shouldn't disregard one table just because you can fill most. Further, as we'd been served by the manager, the service should of been a cut above. I got a bad vibe from her from the begin when I asked how we ordered and she laughed and said I take it.

Deb Mash. Good steak, disappointed by the gross instant mash.
Jess
Horrible, horrible service. Lazy staff with bad attitudes. All round terrible experience. Will never go back.
Classic Schmosby
Terrible service, staff didn't seem to care, took around 20 minutes to place our order in the over half empty restaurant. Then 40 minutes for an average steak sandwich and burger and the second drink never arrived.
Jack Stanistreet
Service was absolutely appalling. My partner and I waited 25 mins for our order to be taken while being only 1 or 3 occupied tables in the restaurant. Our meals were ready to be brought over to our tables and yet we still waited another 5 mins for a staff member to bring them over. When she finally come over with our meals, we got nothing but attitude. <br/>The meals were average and the serious horrible. Don't even bother with this place.
Luke RD
Worst hotel I have ever been to, service at bar was disgusting, will never return
Marie Burrows
I ordered the $43 rib on bone and got a small amount of cold chips, cold gravy, a flaccid salad and a steak which was definitely not 500 gas. At that price it should be restaurant quality not rubbish

The pub where you cannot get a beer. Arrived 7:00pm. Waited for a drinks waitress for a while then went to the bar. Long wait to get a beer and a soda water. There were too few bar staff for the Friday night crowd. Almost everyone was disappointed with the meal ; some food over cooked; ingredients listed in the menu were missing. Expected better for the price. Waitresses were pleasant but stressed and snowed under. The place was crowded and you could hardly hear the person next to you because of the noise. We will not be going back
Natalie Portmenteau
The fit out of the restaurant is pleasant, the staff friendly yet harried but the food was just average. My order of a caesar salad took quite some time, it eventually arrived with an apology and with an ordinary presentation of leaves randomly thrown together with other ingredients in pretty unappealing fashion. A less than satisfying meal. As other reviewers have noted, the prices seem high compared to the finished product. Not somewhere I'd rush back to.

Not returning. I've now been here maybe 6 times and really won't be returning unless someone truly twists my arm and also, hopefully, pays for my meal. I am yet to be impressed by this place. It's ugly, noisy, overpriced and the service is horrible, starting with the phone receptionist whose less than pleasant tone and attitude at the time of booking should have been sufficient warning. <br/><br/>Service: If there are 4 diners, it's not good service to deliver 3/4 meals with a 20+ minute break before the 4th arrives - with zero explanation. (Especially if we're talking about sandwiches on a slow day) It's unacceptable to respond impatiently when people ask about their missing food or coffee. Also - steak knives left on the table for light meals are an irritant that highlights a lack of attention to detail in service. <br/>Prices: No-one minds paying high prices for fine dining but this is not fine dining. <br/>Environment: Get a grip. You've got those massive doors to the balcony open and the aircon cranked to the max. What's that about?

Newmarket Hotel. Food is grossly overpriced ($38) for a steak.<br/>Would have tolerated the overcharge if the food had been of a high standard.<br/>Steak portion very small and several steaks not cooked as ordered in our party<br/>Salad. Consisted of a bit of cos lettuce and croutons<br/>Very poor quality chips<br/>Very disappointing dining experience
Phoebe
So disappointed. Newmarket hotel has live bands, great sized venue, nice layout and relatively clean - I've been a handful of times but only eaten twice. The first time it was your normal pub meal, steak is OK, nothing to write home about. Last night was appalling - ordered the "Newmarket Burger" - apparently their signature burger.<br/><br/>Took 30 mins to come out, they forgot the extra sauce we paid for.<br/><br/>The burger is supposed to come with egg - no egg, but instead there is beetroot and cucumber added and no where in sight was the caramalised onion. Chips tasted like cardboard.<br/><br/>Second burger still no egg, however this time no beetroot and still no onion, again, a side of cardboard chips.<br/><br/>Ended up getting a refund - so disgusted and will never return.

HORRIBLE SERVICE!!! I can't stand this place, have been three times with large groups and the service is abhorrent and so slow! Sending meals back, missing sauces, waitresses completely ignoring you as if none of then have been assigned your table - you have to wave one down! Then they forget you ordered a drink. Terrible terrible terrible, food is ok but hardly worth it. Never returning.

Great outdoor dining. I have been to the Newmarket Hotel many times, recently I went with client on Wednesday and they have $12 steaks with chips & salad.<br/>Its nice and relaxed with great outdoor seating on sunny day!<br/>They have Open Mic Comedy on Mondays which is blast and great laugh! Comedians from Stand Up comedy try out their new acts. Its Free and bit of fun.<br/>Easy place to dine and catch up with friends.<br/><br/><br/>-----17 Aug, 2013-----<br/><br/>Great priced Wednesday steak at lunch. I have eaten here several times, I love steak, chips and salad with bernaise sauce. Always cooked perfectly, medium rare.<br/>Tuesdays they have trivia night and Monday night stand up comedy.<br/>I really like it. Service is very friendly and quick.
Brenda
Good size meal but overpriced.

Restaurant I find is a bit pricey, the bar menu is well priced and still a large serve. Great live entertainment and always friendly staff.

Crap service - No value for money. Had dinner here last night with my Mum and my sister. The service was slow even though the restaurant started almost empty. Then when it got busy they only had 3 staff covering the floor. I had to put my arms in the air twice to get someone to notice us. Meals were not value for money. My Rib Fillet black Angus Steak was chewy and undercooked (and I'm still not convinced it was Black Angus). The flys were really bad. We had to constantly wave them off our food. My sister got Onion rings as a steak topper and she got 5 deep fried out of packet onion rings - for $5! So that was $1 per packet ring. Would have been nice to have been hand made for $5. All up it cost us $169 for garlic bread, 3 mains, 2 deserts and a round of drinks. Won't eat here again.
Madeleine Clare
Terrible service, forgot my cousins meal all together and the rest of us had to wait a long time for mediocre food which was ridiculously overpriced
Kellie
Expensive, unfriendly staff, food definitely not worth the price. Won't go there again.
Drew
Sadly, it's rubbish. The .... Sadly, it's rubbish.<br/><br/>The service is poor because the floor isn't being managed properly. Big floor - staff need to wait on specific tables...and be attentive.<br/><br/>The food...average for the price. Medium rare steak came out blue with burnt edges... Good thing the chef agreed with our assessment considering they are the 'chef'.<br/><br/>Genuinely will avoid this place in future.
Allicaneat
More expensive than Monaco and with an uninterrupted view of the Coles disabled access ramp. $10+ pints of Aussie beer. Steak sandwich bland and tough. Chips possibly made for a meal earlier in the day. Go elsewhere.
Olive Oil
Food good not great. Forgot my meal waitress forgot to put order in. Forgot teaspoons and cutlery for dessert and coffee. Forgot 3 out of six coffees ordered. Waitresses spent more time talking to each other than serving. Managers didn't seem to care what their staff were doing or really remember people's orders. Not sure if I will be going back.
Katie Dawson
Don't bother!. Got the ambience but it stops there. Service with (bad and lazy) attitude, new menu - staff with no idea and even told us they didnt know the new menu), would completely forget drink orders altogether (we went to the bar even though we were in the restaurant and table service), some of our mains came before some of entrees which meant we were all eating at different times, dirty plates weren't cleared and then what we got was basic to say the least. Overcooked, no love and no idea! Couldnt even get the easy things right! Go there for a drink, beyond that they are rookies!
Simon
Overpriced Anyone?. Willing to give them a second chance, but honestly, paid top dollar for a meal that just wasn't quite the full kit.<br/><br/>Brisbane has some of the best pubs to eat at, and this is definitely not meeting that expectation.<br/><br/>The drinks, at least when I dined there, were also a little more than I would have hoped for.
Crystal T
Average Service-Good Value Meals (if you're willing to wait). My partner and I have been twice now. Each time the bar staff are friendly and food has been superb!<br/>Lacking greatly in the floor service dept though. We, on both occasions, had to get up before, during and after our meals for drinks. <br/>Staff seemed to gather at the kitchen counter hot lights and chat amongst themselves.<br/>I was put off a bit, as a fellow patron on the table beside me was upset he was missing something in his meal which was on the menu-the waitress stormed to the counter, snatched up a menu and shoved it in his face pointing at what he had ordered. He at no time was rude to her and had simply misread the menu, she then snatched it out of his hands and swiftly walked up to where the other members of staff were 'hanging out' and proceeded to tell them about her 'stupid' customer who 'couldn't read'. <br/>Very off putting.<br/>Meals are as I said-great value. Quality, large 'pub meals'. But be prepared to wait.
AlexG
Poor Menu. Went here for dinner with a group of 6 on a Thursday night. We all straight away commented on the lack of options the menu provided. Nothing really grabbed our attention, especially for the prices that were being asked yet we decided to stay. <br/><br/>I ordered the duck risotto which didn't have much duck through it and the serving size was poor. Would have to say the Chikcen Parmy that one of my fellow diners ordered seemed to be the best item on the menu and if I were to return (unlikely) I would probably order it. Apart from that all the other dishes ordered were poor, especially the duck salad with mandarin.
Deb
Well below par!. First - the positives! The pub looks great and the staff were friendly and attentive. The entree's were fine and things were looking great for a good night ahead...........and then came the mains. My husband needed a chainsaw to get through his steak and even then I think he would have struggled - the mushroom sauce was really mushroom soup and I'm not too sure how to describe his salad other than wrong. I ordered the bug and eyefillet with sweet potato mash........the mash was inedible and it overpowered the entire dish with cinnamon rendering it untouchable. My sister ordered cannelloni and stopped after two mouthfuls. We felt we had to bring it to the Manager's attention as it's such a shame that a pub with so much potential and great staff has been let down by the quality of food served. The Manager was great by the way and did give us a small discount however the food was really that bad we won't be venturing back to give it another go.

Service needs improvement. We have been dining at The Newmarket Hotel since it's refurbishment. Whilst the food is of good quality and value for money, the service has never been good.<br/><br/>Even whilst attending a recent function, no wait staff were provided and the guest of honour had to serve their own platters.<br/><br/>The atmosphere is good, band great, it is a shame that the overall experience is constantly ruined by inadequate service.
Foodie
What's happened..... Lunch at the Newmarket today, usually goodish, but today had their Chicken Wellington limited special...what was that, pastry not cooked and the cheese that was used tasted badly. Went the salad instead of the veges...few bits of rocket & garnish, not really a salad. My fault for ording the special. Husband had the Pork which apparently was same same, nothing green on the plate. No longer a place for us to visit, standard of food just not there. Staff are very good and helpful all the same. Sorry Newmarket you need to lift the game again.....
A Tasty Affair
Steak Fiasco. Great lunchtime special at $12 for anything on the lunch menu Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday but on the 2 occasions I have been here, both times they have screwed up the steak. Asked for medium rare the first time and got it blue. Sent it back on the first occasion and was offered a complimentary wine to appease. On my second visit asked for medium to compensate and got it well done!! Didn't bother sending back because I was on a time limit heading to the movies. Disappointing for a venue that talks up its steak menu. Otherwise staff pleasant and atmosphere great too.
BB
Bad steak. All i wanted was a simple eye fillet, cooked medium rare. The first dish was more like "blue". I sent it back. The apologetic wait staff were the saving grace for this place as the second attempt at an eye fillet was charcoal central. Wont be back.
The Helix
I've been here a number of times, staff are always friendly and bubbly. Can't go past their Waygu Steak with garlic sauce and creamy mashed potatoes.
M.
Same but different. The menu is a little over priced for the quality of the food<br/>If you want to eat here on the cheap - go on a weekday for lunch - <br/>I have had the fish + chips, the salad is tasty...<br/>The steaks are good...my partner says<br/>I have asked for each time i go there for a 'lemon, Lime and soda water' and they can't seem to get it right - <br/>I have had lemon, bitters + soda<br/>Lime + soda<br/>lemon + soda...<br/>It has a nice atmosphere and the wait staff are friendly too

When it comes to pub overhauls, none has experienced a greater face lift in recent years than the Newmarket Hotel . What once was a drab and seedy beer and cigarette infused establishment has undergone a transformation into another remarkable beer and ste
