Review Pu Kwong Vegetarian Restaurant - Brisbane

Sylvia Ramsay
Staff were attentive and polite. Food came quickly and was tasty. A main each and a shared entree was sufficient for us even without rice. Mock meat is used so no animal flesh in any dishes but the menu is confusing if you want to avoid eggs. Price is a little more than what I would expect but the quality of the food meant I didn't begrudge the price. I liked the casual atmosphere

My last visit was couple years ago, it seems that it’s running by new owner, the food is better than what I remembered.

ever hear about that little Chinese food shop with the great food that no one knows about? simple, plain visited mainly by the locals.... This is one of them. Being someone who is equally at home with a steak or vegetarian, I was pleasantly surprised at the range of dishes available and the quality of the food. They are able to provide dishes with different textures and tastes, you did not notice any lack of protein/meat. Friends who are strictly vego's loved the food and were saying it is some of the best food they've found. Given how full we were still feeling a few hours later, the food did not evaporate in our stomachs either. (forget the 2 hours later and you are hungry again thing. wont happen here) The entrees we had were great and the mains were very good too. The servings were huge and averaged around $12 for the mains. If you worked on an entree and main, you would feed most couples for $20 + tea / soft drinks. while the look and feel is very plain and simple, the food makes up for it. I will be going back for sure.

We’ve been here on numerous occasions over the years and our experiences have declined to unpleasant. Our last two visits were the worst. The first was when they served our sweet and sour pork to another table, when aware of their mistake they took the plate to the back kitchen and 5-8 minutes later we received our sweet and sour pork on a smaller plate with smaller portion than usual. We didn’t dare to touch the dish. Our last visit, we found a hair in our egg plant stew. They supposedly made a fresh serve for us but I have my doubts. Also, the white rice is always so DRY! After the change of ownership some two or so years ago, service and food quality have definitely deteriorated. We won’t be returning after these two experiences. Still having nauseating feelings about it.

I have been eating at this fantastic vegetarian restaurant for 13 years. The food is really good, very clean, price is good and portions are generous. This place is a must for vegetarians. This is the place where most Buddhist monks from Brisbane eat. Everything in the menu is 100℅ vegetarian. The menu is quiet large, be ready to explore Asian Vegetarian at its best. Try the Buddha Delight Crispy Chow Mein...delish!!!

Been twice, both times dissapointed. The lady who served me and my partner was rude and reaaaally looked like she didnt even want us there.. Food is bland and they dont use fresh veggies, its all frozen you can taste it. Not nice at all. I went a second time to see if it will be better because its the only close vegan restaurant I have :( but now Ill just stick to a long drive down to the gold coast and go to Tian Ran. Waaaay better and cheaper

Vegetarian is not boring with a huge range of asian style vegetarian dishes made into the age old favourites of the western world. The vegetarian sweet and sour pork is wow. Never thought you could pull that out of the bag. There are hot pots, soup and yes deep friend ice cream. Worth giving it a go, you wont be disappointed.

Terrible food, since the new owner took over, new paint on the walls which is nice. Staff are rude....when I was ordering she walked away, not helpful with the menu, when she did return she recommended the wrong dish not friendly. Food is not fresh, all frozen and old veggies

PROS:Without a doubt the best, most diverse selection of vegetarian food you will ever find at any restaurant. I have tried everything on the menu, that is how often I enjoy eating at this place. The best VEGETARIAN food in the largest quantity you will ever find. Try to ignore the poor service and you will enjoy yourself.
CONS:The service is not particularly friendly for english speaking people.
For the average Australian the restaurant has little to no appeal regarding its ambiance.TIPS:Always expect to pay in cash. It is much easier to pay in cash for this restaurnat.

Is this shop still open? I went yesterday and it’s closed and the phone line cannot be call through. Someone pls help me.

The food there was quite nice as I went there previously.

It is a shame that the standard has been declined since this new management took over the business (less than one year). I used to be a regular here and have been reviewed this restaurant around two years ago. Unfortunately, the new management let down not only the food but also the service. Had take-away last night, we ordered the hot & sour soup, Squid & Pickled in Black Bean Sauce, combination entrée (cold dish) and Salty Fish & Chicken Fried Rice. It is not due to take-away but the average standard was obviously declined. Only the soup was close to what I had before and the squid dish was so disappointed with a lot more of mixed vegetables in the dish instead of focussing to serve preserved vegetables and squid. It is really a shame.

Jul 17, 2015 Rating 3.5/5
This place has been improved a lot since the current management. Dined in on my Vege day last night and happy to see the face-lifted in the dining area. Loved the chef's suggestion of Deep Fried Oyster and my favorite Hot & Sour Soup. I think this restaurant can go further in boost up the business by thinking about to secure the front-line service. The service is acceptable but not consistent. It is quite hard for you to keep your regulars even the food production is good. You need two experienced staff instead of one or even half sometimes.

Visited Pu Kwong Vegetarian Restaurant with intention of using the Entertainment book. Really important to note that if you visit Pu Kwong you should visit with intention of getting some really good authentic, Chinese vegetarian/vegan food and not come for decoration, service or entertainment. Also, if you are visiting and also planning to use the Entertainment book note that even though they have eftpos facilities, the owners will only accept a cash payment for it. If you're dining without this, eftpos and cash facilities are available. Despite this, the portion sizes are great and great to share. However, almost everything we ordered was deep fried and we could not tell based on the menu. The menu simply states the dish and does not provide much description or any images.

We ordered the sweet and sour king prawns. These were so delicious. The texture of the 'prawns' was almost the exact same as a real prawn which was so amazing. The sweet and sour sauce was really nice too - highly recommend ordering this tasty dish! The lemon chicken is really authentic and definitely tasted like actual lemon chicken! The lemon flavour was not overpowering at all either. We also ordered a deep fried eggplant dish which was so nice and perfectly fried. The last thing we ordered was a red bean pancake in the entrees. This was quite average and would probably not reorder this. Apart from this entree, all the dishes were so delicious and highly recommend ordering any of these dishes!

The customer service was acceptable, nothing great but can't really complain. Pu Kwong is a family run business so sometimes there may not be enough waiters as there are not many staff. Overall, we will be returning to get some delicious Chinese vegetarian food but do not have very high expectations for anything but the food. The meat substitutes used are very similar to that of actual meat so that's great!

Wow! Not in a good way!

The customer service here is plain rude. Dined here recently using a entrainment voucher which only after her redeeming voucher through the app the lady noted it can only be accepted paid in cash even though they have eftpos facilities, also we were ‘accidentally’ over charged originally having to check against the menu.

Decore is very dated from the early 1980’s with chipped plates and bowls. Food is fairly nice for a vegetarian restaurant which is why we have been returning customers, until now due to the bad experience received.

After a quick google search, Looking for Good vegetarian restaurants in Brisbane. I'm very glad this place popped up. I've eaten in at Pu Kwong several times now and I can say that the food was honestly very tasty, with decent portion sizes and well priced.

My first time ever the service was a pretty cold, to be blunt, but after multiple visits the main Lady who I think owns/runs it has become much friendlier and I think prouder to see return customers who enjoy the food they produce. Which in itself is totally fine.

If you want super comfy chairs to sit on, multiple waiters with ties, to handle your every request, TVs in every corner you really do need to go elsewhere.
If on the other hand, you're after a great local food spot that serves decent, healthy-ish vegetarian food then here it is. Who knew about vegetarian squid, fish, beef, chicken, duck & prawns ...???
No animal products at all OR nasty chemicals or flavourings.

I had to bump it up to 5 stars. I've been at least 8 times and the food has been top notch. Only fair.

Good food, bad, blunt, service especially if you don’t pay with cash. Spartan décor which is fine with me.

I always enjoyed the food there which is why, for a time, I got takeaway from there and persevered with their blunt mannerism which was more so when I used eftpos instead of cash. I now go to Eric’s Noodles, which isn’t the same, but simply because of their wonderful customer service, I go out of my way to pay them with cash. Good manners go a long way.

Who says vegans miss out! You can get anything veganised these days and Pu Kwong is home to the most delicious vegan chinese food! My favourites are the sweet & sour pork + lemon chicken as well as the special fried rice with no egg. The service is friendly, the food is cooked fresh & definately fulfills Chinese takeaway craving!

Impressed with the variety of the menu. The service was prompt and courteous since we stepped in. Food was served super fast after having placed our order and they all looked appealing. The fried egg rolls were divine; light crisp skin and full of tasty fillings. The eggplants and tofu with special sauce in a hot pot was cooked perfectly but a bit overwhelmed with the sweet sauce. The combination mushroom and fresh vegetable stir fry was freshly cooked; vegs were tender but crisp and those mushroom were incredibly delish. The portions and prices were reasonable. What a happy healthy meal:)

BEST vegetarian friendly Chinese restaurant in Brisbane. Even a meat lover would love the place so much, introduce to several friends to visit this restaurant and surprisingly the feedback is always positive. I like their curry beef pot and Buddha bowl. Plenty of dishes to try out next time

Vegetarian does not have to be plain and boring. This place is pretty good, with a great variety of meals and dishes on the menu. Prices are reasonable and portions are generous. Food comes out of the kitchen quickly once you have placed your order. Wait staff is very responsive to customers. I prefer coming to this restaurant in the evening on Tuesday to Thursday, when it is usually more quiet (as compared to Fridays and weekends).

This place has been here for ages. Maybe because it's relatively close to the temple in the next suburb? Came here for Saturday lunch and it was pretty popular.

Had combination chow mein and I had to order the deep fried red bean pancake... It's so hard to find in restaurants! My fav.

Everything tasted good and I don't think my LO noticed that everything was vegetarian. She loved it. They have high chairs and provided plastic bowl and spoon for her. Lots of other families with young ones were there too

This has got to be my favourite chinese vegetarian restaurant. The food tastes nice, soup is amazing. The staff are always friendly. Never disappoints!

Omgosh This place is amazing! I was quite trepidatious going in as I'd read mixed reviews. I had a sticky beak at the dishes on tables and what was coming out of the kitchen and everything looked delicious, the lovely lady behind the counter was extremely friendly and explained a lot of the dishes to me even though they were busy.. I think I've found my new favourite restaurant!

Lovely. After finding out the Restaurant had gone under new management I decided to go. The dinner last night was lovely and very filling also the lemon chicken especially was very nice and hopefully I'll go back again soon.

Best nite i ever had with my loved ones. It's an evening where my mum celebrated her 70th birthday. We order in banquet style. Not to western likings, chinese banquet did not come out alltogether. Instead guests invited to taste the food individually with serving of quality tea (we brought our own tea). Food was lovely with plenty for every one. I would definitely order a quest of banquet next time. Every one happy with big smiles going home.

Terrible. In all aspects, this place is horrid. Enough said. Don't waste your money.

Not coming back. We've been customers of the old Pu Kwong for years. When this restaurant reopened middle of this year, we expected the same friendly service and affordable but delectable meals. Though we were surprised that the prices have gone up, we still tried this restaurant under the new management. We ordered tofu with salted fish and chicken in hotpot. It came back with tofu and some small pieces of chicken but not a single piece of salted fish. I added an order of stir fried vegetables for $12.50 on the menu. Order came with a small plate of stir fried gaelan (green leafy veges). When I paid on the counter, I was shocked when the cashier whom we later found out is the manager (she can't speak even basic English) charged me for $18.80 for that plate of green leafy vegetable! What a horrible dining experience! We even have to ask for our rice because no one bothered to bring us our ordered rice. We had to stand up again and again to request for glasses of water as they did not even offer us that.

No way we will be going back there again. The Pu Kwong we used to like doesn't exist anymore. We won't recommend this place to anyone. It's understable that Chinese restaurants' majority of customers are Chinese, but c'mon, you have your business here in Australia, you might as well have a manager/cashier who can speak basic English and has customer service attitude! So sorry for that nice new wait staff who was the one who apologized to us. I'm sure she will be the one who will cup up the complaints from their customers.

Terrible experience. We just went to Pu Kwong for lunch today. The service was dreadful. Firstly we asked for cold water and were brought a pot of hot water. Then the waitress ignored us and my husband had to go up to the counter to order.

Over the course of the next 2 hours - beginning about 1 hour after we ordered, our meal began to appear - one dish at a time. We were planning to combine the dishes and eat it as a banquet style, but this was impossible as no two dishes came out together. By the time they finished serving us it was past their closing time. While we were still eating, they came and put the bill on the table and demanded that we pay right then. The chef came out and roasted the serving girl (in Chinese) because we hadn't paid immediately. It is my understanding that you wait to finish a meal before you pay for it - we would have gladly left before 2:30pm, but they hadn't served our meal to us!!!

The wait staff could not understand or communicate in English, therefore we could not ask about any of the dishes - when they came, they were definitely not to our liking. Our "sizzle" dish for example, did not even raise a puff when she poured on the sauce.

This was definitely NOT the Pu Kwong of old. I would not recommend this restaurant to anyone.

Also the underside of the plates where covered in sticky slime and when we asked for forks - she brought out 5 forks and 5 knives (for a party of 10) - all of the knives were dirty.

I will NOT be returning!!!

Poor service. I have arrived several times and the place is closed despite their business hours stating they should be open. Today I arrived at 2pm, their business hours state 11-2:30 for lunch. I sat down with a menu and the waitress came and took it out of my hands and said "no food" I asked why I couldn't be served but got the same answer over and over again. This was the last straw and I will never go back there again. If you are going to run a business you should stick to your business hours and be able to speak basic English.

Never knew you could get good asian vegetarian food. Honey lemon 'chicken', eggplant and tofu, radish pastry balls, fried rice, enoki mushrooms sauteed with greens, it was all delicious.
The Invisible Food Critic
This used to be an excellent place, but soon had dropped into my dislike category due to oily & tasteless dishes. We've been customers for many many many years and our favourite used to be the deep fried carrot pancake, but it became smaller and smaller over the years and dishes contained less & less materials. I gave it chances but was still disappointed everytime. Once upon a time it was a famous Chinese vegetarian restaurant, now I wont even consider returning, sorry to all the wonderful staff there. I rate this 3/10.

Good food makes up for service. DON'T go there on rush-hour times like Friday or Saturday nights if possible! But then again, check if they're actually open at the times you want to go! Service here in general is polite but very slow and menu items come too far apart but the food tastes great! I love this place!

Hilarious. With mis-delivered, un-delivered and completely wrong meal items arriving or not arriving on our table all night, there was plenty of in house entertainment. Food was pretty good - definitely recommend the wontons, dim sum, sweet and sour "pork" and lemon "chicken". However others at the table received quite bland and in one case completely unappetizing dishes. Would probably give it another shot though.

Awesome!. Just ate here for the first time, all I can say is awesome! Finally a vegetarian restaurant that doesn't just rely on mock meat, so delicious and so many yummy veggies. Love it. Am already planning on going back in the next few days with some friends. Honestly just so tasty, and the service was fast and super friendly!
10/10!

Best vegetarian restaurant in Brisbane, bar none! The fake meat dishes look so authentic and taste sensational.

Yummy vegetarian food. We have eaten at Pu Kwong 5-6 times now, and tried many delicious things on the menu.

Service is always prompt and friendly, and I'd recommend taking meat-a-holics there because the food is delicious enough to satisfy them ... promise!

My husband is vegetarian so I've eaten at many veg restaurants and this has to be my favourite. Fresh ingredients, tasty and lots of variety to choose from. There's a reason why it's always full of munching patrons.

If you haven't been to Pu Kwong yet, you're missing out!

The mixed veggie was pretty good but mapo tofu was not very good. We know it’s a vegetarian modified dish (originally with pork mince) but to be honest I think they could do with a lot of improvement. My mum makes vegetarian mapo tofu at home and it tastes much better, so next time I will save $12.80 to try another dish.

It is definitely an eye-opener to have experienced these vegetarian meals in Brisbane. Love their radish pastry!
