We tried Aspley Oriental Restaurant for yum cha for the first time on Sunday and really enjoyed it. The food is very good, excellent flavours and very friendly service and staff. We had about 10 different dishes, there is a great range to choose from the the quality is very good. Would highly recommend this place for lovers of yum cha.
I've ate here 4 times in the past week for the yumcha 😂 It's put a real strain on my wallet paying 60-80 a meal but I really can't help myself!!
I just love it and it's the only Yum Cha on the north side I can think of :) They also have a non Yum Cha menu but I havnt gotten anything from that so I can't comment. It runs to 3 in the arvo I wish they did it for dinner too!
As stated by other reviewers it can get a little busy but that doesn't stop me :).
- I forgot to mention they gave us a free custard egg tart to take home because we had ate there so much I thought it was a lovely gesture :) very nice!
Best yum cha on the northside!! There's so much variety and the flavour combos are great. Always been served reasonably quickly too even tho they are super busy everytime we've been (obviously because its so good!)
Love the yum cha here if you never have been you have to go it's incredible!! It's a bit expensive but it's a treat and it's well worth it me and my mum come here for special occasions!
Totally satisfied my craving for cheap and cheerful...I'll be back for some more of this delicious food! I can vouch for the Singapore Noodles, Vegetarian spring rolls and quail! Thanks chefs!
You guys rock! At first I was a little unimpressed with the level of service, however thankfully this was a once off occurrence! I have been here multiple times since and the guys remember me, warm welcomings, beautiful food and exceptional value for money! What's not to love!?
Yum Cha Sunday mornings are great here! Excellent service, delicious dim sum and always an amazing atmosphere! Be sure to book or you can be waiting for awhile
Went here a few weekends ago with a family group of 5 adults, 1 teenager and 2 children. We got in about 30 minutes after opening time and were seated immediately and hadn't even managed to get seated before we were being offered food and drinks. We sampled dozens of different offerings from the trolleys as they came around and they were all lovely, dumplings, dimsum, fried wonders, chicken feet and my all time favourite - prawn wrapped in bean curd. Their jasmine tea was the most fragrant and lovely one that I have ever had the pleasure of drinking and the price averaged out at $15 a head. We will be back!
Love the yumcha and have dined here 5 times now with friends and for business lunches. The service is good and there is a huge selection of delicious food. Â My favourites would be the fried squid tentacles, Pork buns, fried chicken dumplings and the heavenly red bean sesame balls.
Best Chinese I've found in Brisbane thus far frequented multiple times and never been disappointed with the service or food produced and they always give free prawn crackers with every order!
Moderate yum cha. Quality is moderate
Flavour is acceptable
Price is reasonable
There's no service to speak of really.
But there's nothing much to choose from in the north side.
I can still come every now and again.
But I won't rush back
I'm in love with this joint. Been coming here for years. Although the owners/managers are pretty wild, it all adds to the experience.
Yum. Have never been a great fan of yum cha in the past but love the food here. Fresh, hot, trolleys come past often.
Not a fan of any restaurant where the owner/manager is too obvious and yelling at staff so that could go. Try not to let that spoil your lunch.
It's a long way from home but willing to make the trip.
Aspley Oriental Chinese - Aspley, Brisbane. As far as the northern suburbs are concerned, this is the only yum cha around. It is in the Aspley Hypermarket, a bit off to the side. Meeting my parents half-way from their apartment on the Sunshine Coast with my elder sister and brother-in-law, this was chosen as a birthday lunch (my mom's). Yum cha is often what I find to be a success when it is selected as a lunch or dinner, and this time around it was no exception.
Aspley Oriental does have a regular table menu. and it has what you would expect on it. However, the real reason why a lot of people come here is because of the yum cha. This place was really busy; almost every table was filled up and more customers were out the door awaiting vacancies.
Most of the food orders come from trolleys and the trolleys come around frequently. You have barely finished one container before they are offering at least three other different varieties. More so than otherwise, the range of yum cha is the steamed variety with separate trolleys for cold drinks, barbequed meats and the fried entrees. You can still get specific items on request by addressing the waiters wearing black attire.
One of the aspects covered with the restaurant surcharges is unlimited refills of tea. This particular brew was refreshing and fairly earthy in flavour. I lost count of how many cups of this I had during lunch.
As for the food order, being a generally non-finicky eater who is open to trying anything new, even if it is just one time, I had no predetermined requests. Whatever came and was ordered at the table, I just went along with and ate what was offered. Since it was a tad more Westernised (more to do with the location and clientele rather than the restaurant itself) than other yum cha, the chances for the really adventurous fare was not prominent. I did get to try at least two new foods that I have not had before, and they are discussed later on.
I admittedly cannot remember everything that as ordered from the trolleys and sample, particularly losing track of what types of dumpling were selected. Thus it is likely that there were more than what is mentioned.
So, when the three of us met the parents they were already into the process. The first item ordered was the salt and pepper squid. This was battered and was a little slippery with the chopsticks (common in yum cha, so no more mentions here about that). The texture was chewable without the stringiness. When this dish is ordered, they are generous with the amount that is piled on; the people who like it consume it in an ardent manner.
The numerous dumplings were delicious and included the classic pork, prawn and chicken amongst others. The meats inside were able to stew in being steamed, leaving behind a slightly sweet flavour to each one.
One of the best aspects of a yum cha is diverging from their dumpling range and seeing other interesting snack foods from China. Some examples are turnip cake, bean-curd and filled Chinese noodles. Some of these are particularly messy to eat which is part of the fun. Also not knowing exactly what is it, sometimes helps in being adventurous.
By special request, there came a plate of oyster greens. Essentially bok choy with oyster sauce poured over it, it is also another great side dish. It combines the freshness of the steamed vegetables with dark richness of the sauce.
There was one order that I did not go for, the maligned tripe. It is difficult to describe what it is that people do or do not like about it. Mostly it comes down to the texture which is like a lot of fibers. This was my first time trying it, and I may as well have to say I have done so.
One of the staples and one of my personal favourites from many yum chas past is the sticky rice. A steamed mixture of rice, and assorted items including sausage and mushroom are steamed in a banana leaf. There were two parcels of this in the basket, both of which were packed really well; there was enough to go around in those two for the five patrons at the table.
It was then time for the sweets. There was this one special which was put to the side until the end, called the New Year cake. It was kind of like jelly and was possibly red bean flavoured. The texture was odd, the flavour was not bad and had a bit of an umami taste. Not bad, worth a try to see for oneself.
Finishing off for dessert was the Ma Lai Gao - or better known as Malay Cake. This is a traditional Cantonese dessert that is often served at dim sum restaurants; the closest comparison is a sponge cake. After an accumulation of richness from the various antecedent bites, the lightness of this dessert is a good contrast. There is a slight vanilla flavour to it. And with that, everybody was full and satisfied and it was time to go; more clientele were awaiting the Chinese delights that followed.
This held up pretty well. It is certainly not to the standards of Chinatown or Market Square; particularly to a purist point-of-view. However as its own entity it had a good selection of choices to eat, attentive service and was well organised. Once again, yum cha proves to be amongst the best go-to options for eating with a crowd.
Wow amazing service...5 star! Food was good and beautiful resturant! Staff were attentive and very friendly...will recommend to all my friends
Awesome fresh yum cha. It's a busy little restaurant and we waited for about ten minutes for a table but it's well worth the wait. There is constant carts full of fresh yum cha - the best I've had in QLD hands down.
Go for the yum cha!. Fast service, yummy (albeit edited) selection and attentive staff. Wish they had more vegetable dishes on their yum cha menu, but I suppose that's not what yum cha is about :P
Highly recommended!
Tasty Asian Food. I dined back here in Feb 2013 and I've had takeaway a few times. I've always eaten different dishes I wouldn't normally order and I've never been disappointed.
My dine in experience was nice and peaceful. Staff were extremely friendly and attentive. I ordered the seafood hotpot and wonton soup. Both tasted superb and went down well on a rainy miserable day. I will definitely go back here to dine in or take out.
Went to Oriental Aspley last night for the first time.
It has a very impressive menu at very reasonable prices. Food was lovely and the portions where very generous.
The service was a little slow at first but improved after we ordered and the staff were very helpful. 2 of the meals were prepared at the table which were nice touches.
The constant stream of people coming through the door shows its popularity and hearing the positive comments from nearby diners says this restaurant is doing something right.
We are are now looking forward to trying the lunchtime yum cha.
Best yum cha on the north side and has been my family's favourite Chinese restaurant for years. I always take friends here because it continues to be a class act.
Give them a break!. Ok, can I just say, I have read many reviews on this site and I feel obligated to defend this poor restaurant. Firstly, I have been quite a few times and while I'm not a VIP or anything, I still get treated reasonably well.
Of course it will be a busy and crowded atmosphere in there, especially on the weekend - I mean, who wouldn't want some of those delicious dumplings (I think the mini pork bun and pork & peanut are the best!)? But that crowded-ness is part of the experience!
And to all those complaining the manager Andy (who is not the owner- that is another guy called Jacky) is rude and terrible, well, you try getting that crowded atmosphere under control without yelling. Yes he is a bit brash, but considering the speed at which customers get seated, it is understandable (and hilarious). The assistant managers, Connie and Denise are always lovely as well, aside from the very VERY occasional yell, which is again understandable.
As a whole, the restaurant is a great lunch-time option for me and my family and I will continue to keep going.
Yummmm Cha. I have been here countless times. In my experience it is the best yum cha in Brisbane. Try sticky rice noodles and chicken feet.
Yum! We will go back, first yumcha experience and I loved it!
Top quality Asian food, well priced, fair service. Only thing I must fault about this place is that everything I have been the boss is always yelling at the staff. Not what I want to see whilst eating.
Northside yum cha. Popped in for a wednesday lunch meeting and found yum cha that is on par with anything I've had in the Valley or Sunnybank area and they seemed to have all of the popular dishes.
I don't live in the area so I don't know of any other Northside establishments to compare to.
Food is great but ambience is terrible! It was noisy and felt relieved when I was done eating and got out!!
Excellent food and extremely efficient service at a very reasonable price.
Great yum cha in a place you wouldn't expect. The staff scurry around fulfilling customer requests with frenetic efficiency. We'll be back.
Yum Cha. Lunch time today was my first visit after years of kinda meaning to get out there "some day".
The restaurant is very much typical of any seperate eating place in a shopping centre. But it is clean and tidy, even if the the decor is not upmarket.
The food however is reasonably priced for what you get, fresh, tasty and the service is top notch.
Husband and I are regulars too. always really good. I remember when they first opened yum cha service it was horrible. a few months later though they really turned it around. I have friends that live closer to China town than aspley but come out here instead for yum cha now.
Excelleny Yum Cha. Service prompt. Food great. Always a crowd though - make sure you get in early, or make a booking!
Supurb. The Yum Cha is great as is the Service., in a nice setting
What more needs to be said ?
Lovley food and service. Have been to this restaurant a few times now and found the service to be exceptional, ( even when waiting for take away, given a glass of lemonade or wine whilst you wait...)
The food is also fresh, tasty and good selection.
will I be back? YES!
We r regulars here n know the staff by name....the owner andy is great n he also runs another resto at sunnybank.... Never had sny complaints abt the food... Both dinner n yum cha r yummy!
My wife and I have been twice now it's not the best yum cha but it's good no problems either time very fast service and the only one like it on the northside highly recommend
Our local. I have been to the restaurant many times since moving to the Northside. There has only been one time when I had to wait a longer than reasonable time for service and this was for a drink while I was eating. Their soups are excellent with their hot and sour soup being outstanding in my opinion. Their yum cha is very good not brilliant, however for my local I am not going to go into the City to get better. Having said that their sticky rice is delicious. It is always nice to go there and be greated by name and to be treated like a human being, something lacking in many restaurants these days. I think I will cry if it becomes like one of those sort of places that make feel a little less human by your presence. Yum Yum.
A favourite lunch destination. Mum took me here when i was younger for Yum Cha and we have been regularly back! Definetly reccomend this destination to everyone. the people ae friendly and food is reasonably priced and absolutely amazing.
I like to tke my friends to the yum cha and they agree its well worth the wait!
I generally go to their little fast food place out the back on my way home from work to get some lunch. I love both places, but since being at uni and having a job keeps me on my toes, i mostly go there to pick up some takeaway on my way home. Smaller menu but it still tastes delicious!
Highly reccomend the deepfired pork dumplings! yuuuummmy and the steamed prawn dumplings. Another must try is their special soy sauce which goes perfectly with both dishes!
Dinner. We went to Aspley Oriental for dinner - really enjoyable experience. I'm no expert on Chinese cuisine, but the food was delicious and plentiful, and the service was efficient and friendly. Great value with an Entertainment Book voucher. Will be going back again.
Yum Cha Daily!. As this is pretty much the only place for Yum Cha on the Northside my GF and I have become regulars.
It has become really popular over the last couple of years, especially on weekends. Lineup and take a ticket is a regular occurance.
Like most Yum Cha joints it can get a bit chaotic inside at peak times but the dumplings are worth it.
Favourtites include: prawn & chive, sharkfin, stuffed tofu and eggplant, chicken feet and steam pork buns, although I think they have changed their recipe for these in the last few months, they used to be better.
Good to see some variety in the Northern suburbs and I hope this place stays around!
Delicious Yum Cha!. Great Asian food, I go back there again and again for Yum Cha, seems to be the best place for it on the north side. There are plenty of delicious options, my favourites are the steamed dumplings, particularly the prawn and chives ones- the prawns are so fresh and burst open in your mouth. I've been there for lunch once and picked up some takeaway there once for dinner, not quite as impressed with the lunch and dinner options compared to yum cha, but still found the food good. In terms of ambience, well, nothing fancy. It's jam-packed with tables, covered in tired old carpet, has a couple of fish tanks full of lobster and coral trout at the front, and it overlooks a not-so-salubrious car park at the Aspley supermarket... but hey, you don't go there for the decor! The service is quick, with some hosts friendly and others amusingly gruff.
Yum cha was tasty, fresh and plentiful! Prices are reasonable too. Best to go early. Will be back!
Went here on Saturday morning for yum cha and ite was excellent. The food kept coming, was hot and delicious. Better than most of the valleys offerings. Will go here again definitely
The best Chinese restaurant on the Northside by far. Award winning and sister restaurant to the famous Sunnybank. Meal are very generous and the taste a 10, whether it's the entree or main. Yum Cha is brilliant and although it does not have the range of that at the Palace in Fortitude Valley, the freshness is equal to any in Brisbane or Sydney. I continue to promote this hidden Northern Suburb gem. The staff especially the head waiter is second to none in his service and manners. Best to book as sometimes especially weekends you have to line up outside
I love their yum-cha! Went there last Sunday for lunch. Since it was busy they had this numbering system by giving out tickets. We were #75 :-). I found their food to be very delicious and were well organized in the way it was set up :-)
Fantastic meal and good service. We will definitely be back. Cam highly recommend the lemon chicken and sweet and sour pork
Unhurried Asian. We first tried to eat here a few weeks ago when we were newly arrived in Brisbane, unfortunately they were full due to some function or other, so we had to leave. Last night though was no problem.
It was a very enjoyable meal, probably because it felt so unhurried compared to so many Asian restaurants I've been in. The wine measures helped too! Wasn't overly keen on the muzak though, but then I'm picky.
Had dim sim to start, the biggest and best-filled I've ever had. Tasty too, you could tell there was actual meat in there, which unfortunately isn't always the case
That was followed by a chicken with cashew nut dish. You have the option of chinese-style spice or a hotter thai-style version, I opted for the latter cos I do like my spice... Overall it wasn't too spicy to eat, but it definitely had a little kick, which could be increased exponentially by eating the accompanying dried chilies. I managed about four of them, but had to admit defeat after that.
Only quibble I have is that there aren't enough wines by the glass, but the bottle prices seemed reasonable. As I said above the glass measures seemed quite generous, which was nice!
Would def go back, it's always good to have a failsafe restaurant nearby for those lazy last-minute evenings. Thanks to the lovely staff.
I have to share my favourite dish of the day. Cheong Fun, I still swoon at the thought of these super soft large noodles, swimming in a salty soy sauce and filled with fresh delicious fillings such as prawn, BBQ pork or a beef special. I would go again and again to this restaurant just for this dish.
