Review Sushi Train - Brisbane

Dana Perkins
I frequent Sushi Train Greenslopes every few months. Their sushi is delicious and fresh. The customer service is always good. My favourite is the capsicum Wagyu beef. Just delicious.

What a dreadful sushi train ! I have now visited a couple of times and each time i have been unimpressed. I have found the staff to be disinterested and lacking personal skills. The food is uninteresting and when ordered takes ages to be bought to the table and several times hadn't arrived at all. I ordered vegetable tempura which costs$9 , twenty minutes later i received 4 pieces of veg, 1bean, 1 tiny slice of eggplant, 1 tiny slice of what we think was pumpkin and another unidentified piece of veg, see photo attached. What a rip off, I asked was this the usual size of serving, staff took it back with no response. I don't recommend anyone goes here, for the hot food, I ordered fresh and it was taken off the train and heated in the microwave, which means soggy tepid food. I'd give no stars of i could,, yuk !

We love to bring the whole family to sushi train, the kids love the robot that delivers hot meals from the kitchen. Lots of seating options so you can come with a reasonable sized group. Prices are on the higher side but portions are good and service is fast. Seafood is fresh but tuna can be a bit touch and go at times. Recommended. No sake.

TLDR; Will never go back. Got food poisoning from eating undercooked chicken in a takeaway order and response from manager was businesslike rather than empathetic, compensation offered was tokenistic and pathetic. I received chicken so undercooked it was translucent in places, and had a rubbery texture, but didn't notice until after I had eaten a piece. I was unwell for days, typical symptoms of food poisoning, and as a casual worker lost 4 hours of work on Saturday and the shop I work at had to close, also causing the owner to lose income. When I called on Saturday morning, the first person I spoke to apologised and said the manager would call me back to discuss compensation. The manager called me back, offered no apology or compensation, and simply asked me for proof. I emailed him this photo I have attached to this review. I received an email relating to my "alleged claim" as they stated, saying "We will investigate this matter thoroughly including with our Sushi Train head office and our suppliers as it may be the sinew / tendon part of the chicken, however please be assured that we always cook and temperature check all of our cooked and fried ingredients including the chicken karaage accordingly and safely. " As anyone can plainly see in the photo, it is clearly NOT the sinewy/tendon part of the chicken. Also, how would they determine this without seeing the actual chicken I was served? I replied as such. I then received a further email which basically stated that they have conducted an audit and gone through they safety procedures and can't come to a conclusion, and that the "only explanation" is that it was the sinew/tendon or that chicken can be "pink in colour even when cooked correctly". Have you ever seen cooked chicken so pink it is almost see through? They did not accept they had made a mistake, instead put the onous on me as "being unsatisfied with Chicken Karaage", and told me that they "have yet to receive any further claims from other customers who ordered and consumed the same batch of Chicken Karaage" - and all they offered me was a replacement meal or a refund of that individual item, quoted from their email: "As you were unsatisfied with our Chicken Karaage, we will gladly replace it or for an equal value menu item of your choice upon your next visit or order, or gladly provide you with a refund". Do they think that after this horrific experience that I will ever be coming back to their store? Perhaps if the manager apologised, offered me something more substantial and fitting for the experience of getting FOOD POISONING FROM UNDERCOOKED CHICKEN, rather than being all business like about audits and safety standards (presumably to cover themselves in the case of legal action?), I might have considered giving them my business, but they went about it the wrong way and now they have lost a customer.

Good sushi place but don’t recommend it after 7pm cause there are only few leftovers and COLD hot foods on the conveyor and they don’t fill it which is understandable. Nevertheless the reason people go Sushi Train is picking up from the conveyer. You can make personal order though.

Waited over 30 minutes for my food, all my mates had finished eating before I had even received mine. It was average rice bowl. Not enough sauce, dry rice. Very poor service and food quality.

My fav sushi spot in Brisbane. We lived close by, and went to Sushi Train Greenslopes often. The only disappointment was waiting time to get seated on some nights. But isn’t it always full when the food and service are good?

Be ready for lots of waiting for sub par not cheap sushi. Only sushi place in the vicinity so we came here more than I would have liked. Disappointed every time with the service and the food is not that good to compensate. Example, ordered take away (not enough vegetarian options on the train to grab so you HAVE TO order specifically). Was told 5-10 min. Got served 40 min after with no apologies or anything. This has happened many times. Worst if your takeaway is for more than a couple. At least 55 min if ordering for a family dinner, even on weekdays.

Never had such rude service. Food not great. Do not recommend.

We love sushi and sashimi, Sushi train often delivers an authentic one. But for some reason, Tarragindi’s Branch always seems to be Not As Good as other ones on the Southside of Brisbane. Be it the taste, the presentation or it’s service. I do hope they pick up their game soon as they’re located in a very convenient place.
_kreativecakes
Massive let down. Firstly their sushi is fresh. We did takeaway so it was made to order. However service was poor. The staff member who served me was rude. I know they are busy but there is no need for rudeness especially to paying customers. Will l be back? Well no!
Georgia M
I came in to your store about 2 weeks ago and asked what was vegan, I was told that everything in the vegetarian section was vegan as long as I didn't have mayo with it. Tonight I came in and again asked what was vegan and was told only avocado rolls are... I'm very upset about this as I was told almost the opposite only 2 weeks ago.

The serving staff were incredibly nice but the kitchen was not helpful. When I asked if there was any way to make anything vegan I was told "no, just avocado." I think staff needs to know what is in all the food as this is very inconsiderate to customers with dietary needs.

It is what it is - Sushi Train is consistently yummy, and this place in particular has fresh sushi, made by some quite helpful staff. We are always welcomed warmly to this local jaunt of ours - it can get quite busy on the weekends! We order fresh sushi and they are more than happy to quickly make it for us. Our favourites here are the Chicken & Avocado Nigiri and the Kanikama Tempura :)
The Hiding Foodster
Sushi Train certainly has a good array of choices, and it’s steaming it’s way to success with the public to boot.

The service is extremely friendly and genuine, with a pleasant cup of green tea (****) served via a teapot, some nicely cooked duck and rice (***.5) and some packet ginger (*****) that really hit the mark.

It’s not really ‘my cup of tea’ as a place to go, but for choice and service, Sushi train is not to be derailed.

This sushi train is the closest one to us and is usually the go to place for a quick and fresh meal. Depending on what time we go, we can usually get a booth to cater for the little one.

Plenty of parking down stairs with short parking at the top, went straight in and within minutes ordered drinks and some items off the menu. Staff are really friendly and polite. The waitress brought us our drinks within a minute.

Food is always fresh, never had a issue with food, and this sushi train is always busy

We will be back again.for a quick, fresh and easy meal.
Claire P
The usual sushi train, clean, nice it can be pretty busy which means the food is always fresh. The staff are quite attentive if you want to order something from the menu. I dig the beef tataki.
Chocolate Obsession
Very fresh sushi with tasty combinations. Only wish the other franchises were of the same quality. Best sushi train in Brisbane. Friendly service.
Anthony H
Consistently good sushi and friendly staff. The chicken and avocado nigiri is my personal favourite. Order one of the rice bowls if you're particularly hungry :)
Lazy1124
Another good sushi train franchise, can't expect too much, food is good most of the time, service quality is always good from Japanese. Always busy when I visit, sometimes the waiting time is too long.

Love the aburi beef here, my personal favorite .

Only thing to complain is sometimes I get tasteless sushi rice, assume they didn't mix the vinegar well??
Blt5m
Excellent!! Sushi is always fresh, fish is cut properly so it melts in your mouth (almost). Service is great. Plates are a bit pricey but they are good size serves. Very busy, reminds me of Japan! Get there around 5.30/6 to not wait for table, but always worth the wait anyway! Favourites: salmon aburi, karaage, gyoza and chicken avocado nigiri. Best local sushi by far (and I have tried a few!!)
Laura Williamson
Too expensive, rude service and inconveniencing customers with trying to close early/rush you out the door or by lack of eftpos/eftpos machine breaking, rarely can flag down staff to take orders and the sushi size only getting smaller and smaller over the years and nothing special, use to be a regular but not anymore. Much better places around Brisbane.
Hilarey Barton
BEST SUSHI TRAIN EVER!!
We have been over and over and its consistently delicious. Because its well known there can be a lengthy wait for tables but this has the bonus upside of leading to all the sushi on the train being freshly made and so extra tasty
Chloe Casswell
I have been here many times and they are consistently excellent. Some of the best sushi and sashimi in Brisbane. Staff are friendly and efficient. Make sure you try the salmon aburi and the wagyu aburi!
FoodsterChamp
Sushi train is always a favourite of mine. Consistently good food with high quality control. The Greenslopes franchise is exceptionally good, with the manager leading his team in great service and a smile. My favourite dish is the hot hot chicken. With the spicy mayo and cayenne pepper, it's a flavour you can't beat!
Liam Kinneally
Great place to have lunch, sushi is always fresh and great atmosphere. The chicken and avo takes me on culinarily journey shared with friends. The crunch mixed with the Mayo is an emotional evolution ending in a climatic experience. Would highly recommend.
The Knitting Tearoom
I used to regularly go to the Sushi Train at Sunnybank Market Square until they were bought out by other people, which is why I have been going to the Greenslopes one (the closest one) whenever I feel like Sushi Train-style sushi. I haven't written a review of this place before, because there really is nothing much to write about - these stores are quite ubiquitous - (food is generally (just) okay, and selection has broadened to include everything on the standard Sushi Train menu, compared to when they first opened and had only a few things available (but I think they may have been deliberately just making only enough food to cater for the small client numbers back then)), so what sends me here today? I just had dinner there and need to report on the rude service I received.

A few weeks ago when I went, I asked about the loyalty card, because my sister had lost the one we've had for years. When asked if it was free to join, the older man at the payment desk (I suspect he's the owner) said it was. Checked the receipt afterwards, and I was charged $3 for it. It may only be a few dollars, but it's the principle, right? So, tonight, of course I was going to present the card to have points added for the meal, since I've paid for it. Yes, I did take a minute rummaging through my wallet to look for the card, and I know that can be annoying when there's someone else behind waiting to pay, but that is no reason for him (same guy) to look at me contemptuously while I was doing so, exhaling through his nostrils impatiently, and giving me the biggest sarcastic smile while shaking his head when I found it. He didn't immediately take the card from my hand, as if to make a point that he didn't want to serve me anymore, and when the card payment was processed, he loudly slapped each of the receipts onto the bench top, and then looked past me to the next person. No smiles, no "arigatou gozaimasu"s that are typical of any Japanese eatery. And that's when you know they're deliberately being rude and letting you know that they don't care for your continued custom.

If I did that in my job, where retail and customer service really just forms one component of my role, the customers would probably not come back, and I would probably get fired or get a warning. I certainly won't be coming back to this Sushi Train any time soon. Much better sushi to be had elsewhere anyway.

**Edited to lower rating after taking rude service into account. Food itself with normal service (i.e. polite enough, but sometimes takes forever to flag a staff member down to make an order/get the bill) would probably be a 3.)
Pankate
My favourite sushi place! This Sushi Train is always busy. Always fresh and service is fantastic! I confidently ate here throughout my pregnancy (obviously nothing raw) due to the high quality and freshness of the food

The food here was exactly what we were looking for. In particular, the pork gyoza was an always-reliable treat, while the prawn dishes were fresh and tasty. They were full to capacity when we went there, and although we had a little bit of trouble getting the attention of the wait staff when we were trying to get the bill, I thought they were handling it well overall.
Kate
YUM - BEST SUSHI EVER. This is the BEST sushi. The staff are really friendly and polite. Great place!
Wingnut
Best sushi train by far!. Only downside is the wait for a table but great food is always worth waiting for. Tip is to order the hot dishes like aburi salmon rather then taking it off the conveyor. We are regulars and are lucky to have this restaurant so close to home.
Stuart
Best train style sushi restaurant , the grilled eel and rice was excellent.
Couturegirlamy
Fresh sashimi. I had a large tuna sashimi platter and for $16 it was great. All the sushi looked fresh. We went a little before lunch and being a Saturday it was a good idea as it was packing up by the time we left
T_blumel
Best sushi. Hands down my favourite sushi place on the south side. Always fresh and a good variety.
Anonopotamous
Disappointed. Horrible service. Been here a few times (each time thinking, "it'll be better than last time") and disappointed every time. The food isn't the freshest, and the waiters are terrible. They're rude, unresponsive and there quite frankly there aren't enough of them. The atmosphere is a redeeming quality but I ended up leaving because I couldn't get service (there weren't that many people). Oh, and the card machine stopped working on the way out.
James
Great sushi. Lovely staff but super busy. Book in advance.
Thedecoy
Prices start at $3.50. Reasonable price for clean, fresh and tasty food that is eat in. Good for weekend family lunch. Or to bring the kids for a Friday after school treat. This place is not fine dining and staff are constantly busy so yes you do need to be assertive (you are not being rude) to get their attention. It's a good idea to be prepared and order drinks, miso or meal bowls while being seated and problem solved. A welcome addition to Greenslopes.
Nina
Unfortunately this is my local sushi place. The service is really bad! I phsyically have to stand up and tap a waiter on the shoulder just to get their attention for a glass of water. It is SO OVERPRICED!! Its just sushi and they charge a good $5 for a tiny plate of plain sushi rolls!!
Karinmcdowall
Family favourite!. We are a family of five who have been to many a great sushi place, but rate this one as our very favourite. Sushi is always super fresh, excellent variety as well as clean & modern design and lovely staff who manage the peak hour crowds very well.
Check out the blow torched scallop or salmon nigiri.

Fast, clean.. awesome food!! best place ever!! :)))

Crap. SERVICE.. Okay if you willing to wait for a table. Clearly it's not that difficult. Esp when there are tables available and they still make you wait. There making too much money if that the case.
Rob
Saturday night feast. We got there at like 7pm and the place was pack it was so worth the wait friends and i got a booth and we started eating the selection is pretty similar to every other sushi place around but the quality is so so much better even just little things like adding a dribble of sauce to a plate that at other places they don't even have
the plate price was a little bit more than im used too but you're really getting what you pay for
the staff was great all the chefs were smiling and chatting away in Japaneses it's a really great environment and the ambiance is really good i'd recommend this to anyone who love's sushi train and anyone who wants to try sushi for the first time
Kimbiz1989
Great sushi and even better staff.

Fresh, clean, tasty, excellent service, kiddy friendly
Chris M
Amazing! Great service, bit of a wait because it was busy but it is busy for a reason. Amazing.

Too Expensive !. Not the best, but the cost of lunch was the most I have ever spent on boring Sushi - there are lots of other places to go! go there, including Stones Corner.
Food Critic
The sushi here is consistently nice & fresh. The place is always busy. Only downside is that a lot of pretentious ppl come here.
BT
Service is terrible but the sushi is good. They have all the stockstandards plus some modern twists like the avacado sundried tomat and cream cheese rolls which i recommend
Emily Watling
One of the best sushi restaurants I've tried. Yes there may be a wait but it's worth it. The aburi is amazing always end up having one or two more even though I'm stuffed. Staff are attentive and unobtrusive. Couldn't ask for anything but tempura asparagus, one of my favs that sadly isn't on the menu.

Expensive

Sensational Sushi!. The Greenslopes Sushi Train is the one all other Sushi Trains should model it's business on... this is really exceptional japanese fast food. Only suggestion is get there before twelve or after 2pm if you can otherwise the wait is annoying.... takeaway during this time also is lengthy. The eggplant sushi is beautiful as are the croquettes!
La-vie-en-Oz
Japanese sushi like the Japanese make it. Yes, this place has Japanese sushi actually made by Japanese staff. If you feel up to it, you can even practice your Japanese skills.

Fresh, as you would have it in its country of origin, and served with good quality ginger, you should indulge in that extra plate. Try the unaghi (eel - slightly cooked) - smooth, creamy, just melting in your mouth quality. Or a fresh, smooth maguro (tuna). Gyoza dumplings, syumai dumplings and chocolate mousse also go round on the train.

Because they have some the freshest fish (similar to Wagaya quality), they are a very sought after restaurant and prices vary between 3.5 and around 5 per plate. They have a mix sashimi or only salmon for 11 dollars. the decor is not bad either.

Great food/ reasonable price. Went here on Saturday night with family for my birthday, my family are occasional sushi eaters but not everly fussed, my mum had the teriyaki chicken rice bowl which I sometimes get around the corner from their takeway part for work which is awesome. The food was incredibly fresh and really yummy, had a bit of everything - the chicken karaage role was okay but needed a bit of sweet chili or something to go with it. Had the chicken teriyaki and avo roll which I love, bad communication from my sister meant we got 2 plates of it which was fine as I had them both. The only thing to complain about was my sisters partner got the soft shell crab and it had the yellow part/ roe I believe inside it which was a turn off for a couple of us. Other wise was fantastic, took a while to get seated which we knew would happen on a saturday night, took about 20 minutes to seat us (5 people), service wasn't exactly prompt, had to flag a waitress down but once over it was fairly quick. Total price for 5 people was $82.50 which was extremely cheap had we gone anywhere else. Will definitely try again

-----02 Mar, 2012-----

So far so good. So far I have ordered from inside (where IGA is) and have gotten the chicken and avo rice bowl which was pretty awesome, the lime in it was weird to me and there wasn't enough soy on the rice at the bottom $9.80 and it gave me 2 meals to that was pretty decent. Went there again yesterday and got the chicken karaage rice bowl take away, chicken was pretty good however again rice was average. Overall I wouldnt get the karaage again, just wasn't my liking. Will probably go back sometime when I'm not working and have longer than 30 minutes for lunch. The takeaway menu upon browsing seems rather adequate so will have to try the train next time.

Also got the membership card and the guy didn't really understand how to do it? Not sure whether the card was meant to be scanned with my details put in but he didnt do this, just put my card number on the form I filled in and gave me the card - Hoping it works next time!
Dennis
Good & Bad. Excellent Sushi but access management is pathetic. If busy which is all the time you have to wait in line and others may be seated before you if their numbers align with seats available. No use complaining as staff don't understand or do anything about it. Sad as the food is very good but I have been affected by waiting for seating while others jump queue twice in a row so won't be back.

Excellent sushi.
Jeffvader
Excellent in every way. Food, service, staff, cleanliness, this place is doing everything right. Try the arburi, but have it fresh, just ask, they will happily flame it right in front of you. Delicious.
Hooi
The sushi was quite fresh and delicious. Not too bad. Unfortunately, we will have to wait for the next anniversary. I think it is quite expensive at a normal price (If we were to eat that much anyway!). :)
