Arriving at Manly on Father's Day at 12.30pm, it is bustling with people and cars. All restaurants and takeaway cafes are doing a roaring trade. Unable to find a park I drive towards Lota where there is a large park for picnickers next to the sea. I manage to find a parking space 100m from Bart's Place. I see a long queue spilling out of the Fish & Chips store so I suggest to my Mum and Phuong Tran that we have a walk along the seashore.
Finding a shady area under a big Eucalyptus tree the ladies prepare our picnic spot and I walk into Bart's at 1pm. The dining area is fully occupied with diners and at the counter there are 2 customers ahead of me. Soon, I am placing my lunch order of 8 Whiting (butterfly) pieces, 6 Sea Scallops, 3 crumbed oysters and beer battered chips totalling $46.00.
Thirty minutes later, my order is ready and I sprint back to the two HANGRY ladies! Copping an earful about the long wait, photos are quickly taken and then golden silence while we all enjoy our picnic lunch. The whiting fillets are overfried and a little dry (3.5/5.0). The large imported sea scallops were juicy and tasty (4.5/5.0). The battered oysters tasted fresh and are nicely fried (4.0/5.0). The chips are good too. Overall an enjoyable picnic lunch on a very busy day for the kitchen.
Thank you guys!
Great location for a Fish & Chip cafe. We had Coffin Bay Oysters , Moreton Bay Bugs and Prawns accompanied by a salad . Good spot for a lunch.
I've always found the food in here to be consistently good to very good. It's a little expensive but we do live in a world of "you get what you pay for". Service is usually pretty good but the owners do come across as a little arrogant and that could put some people off. However ill definitely be back.
First timers on 8th Dec 2013..absolutely loved it!! Hope the service and food doesn't change...loved the bread and butter..nice touch..freshest fish we have tried in Australia in 6yrs...we will be back!
Fresh fish, prawns and bugs, nice chips, a little on the exy side but worth it for fresh tasty seafood.
Reliable. I used to live in Manly and Barts was one of a few local fish cafes that were a favourite. We visited recently (last wednesday lunchtime) and were not disappointed. It was busy but the service was prompt and the fish was fresh and tasty. One odd spot was the greek salad which I ordered because my wife is allergic to onion, and greek salad doesn't usually have onion. The salad we were served had fetta, tomato, cucumber, and olives, but it also had capsicum, roquet, onion, and balsamic vinegar. It was OK after we picked out the onion, but just not what I'm used to. They have a good choice of local fish as well as imported.
Quite possibly the best fish & chips ever! Staff friendly. Great location. A little ex'y but well worth it.
Best fish n chips in area. I have been buying my fish and chips from here for 20 years. Always cooked perfectly and quality fresh fish. My daughters used to work here so I know that behind the scenes the standards are always high. Nice cafe atmosphere, especially at night. Check times because some nights they may close early. Reg and Greg always have a smile for regulars and will get to know what you like.
Bart's Place is now my place!
Faultless food, superb service.
Fresh bowl of prawns an inexpensive $12. Amazing chips for one at $2.50. Cooked just the way chips should be.
Friendly and approachable service. Meals delivered to table. Thoughtful to serve prawns with a waste bowl and and a finger washing bowl.
Also BYO. Amazing!
Fantastic view too.
Family owned and operated business. The locals are here, affirming its quality. Enjoyed this Wednesday lunch treat.
Worth supporting this local business and if you know of people keen to work in hospitality, apply here!
Have been coming here for years, with more frequency with kids lately.
Very good quality fish and chips. Service is good. Prices are proportionate (it's not cheap though not being overcharged given the quality).
Personal recommendation would be err on more chips, and save money and get say large cod or whiting rather than barra or similar.
3 stars for meeting expectations, +1 star for exceeding them compared to other chippies, and maintaining it over time.
I am very surprised about some of the reviews here. The food is great and the owner couple is always super nice and friendly. It's might not the cheapest f&c shop in the area, but they offer great quality and they work very hard. We are going there for years and I sadly see them struggling with their business from time to time. We should all help and support this small local shops!
Best fish and chips we have had in quite a while! Catering to my GF needs no problem at all. Husband sung high praise for his battered Barra too!
