Really liked this place. Wish I lived closer so I could go more often.
I have been to Milkwood on several occasions before as they do seriously good cake and coffee here, but on our most recent visit we decided to have something a bit more substantial. I've always enjoyed the atmosphere of this gem in Brunswick, as it has a relaxed vibe with it's lovely courtyard and art on the walls. Staff are welcoming and service is really good too.
We chose to have a fritter special, and it was delicious with it's portobello mushrooms and beautiful poached eggs. The fritters were golden and crispy and it tasted delicious.
The pancakes are a menu staple, and certainly lived up to my expectations. This generous serve of fluffy pancakes was topped with rhubarb, berries, syrup, honeycomb and cream. So indulgent and heavenly. The sharpness of the rhubarb was the perfect foil for the sweet elements, and I could indulge in these every day.
In the busy cafe scene of Brunswick, Milkwood has a loyal following because of it's good, honest food, friendly service and fantastic ambience. Oh, and of course, the divine cakes.
Milkwood is has a fantastic range of food. I especially love the Pancakes and Bircher muesli which were some of my favorites. The 2 things which brought my experience here down was the wait for a table and the wait for food. These both took ages and is not ideal. I really love this cafe and highly recommend it.
Well howdy Zomato readers!
Just wanted to leave a little review for my new favourite breakfast joint, Milkwood. The verdict is in folks, its great! My cappuccino was well executed and my bacon sandwich was delectable.
How refreshing to finally discover a cafe in "hip" brunswick that isn't "too cool for school".
Great place!
Staff are friendly and relaxed; nice music and atmosphere. Hummingbird cake is perfect- not too sweet. Coffee is smooth, drinkable iced and without sugar. That’s rare 😍
I personally wouldn’t serve a cake on top of a napkin cause the first thing people/I do is remove the napkin and make a mess, but anyway 😅 Really cute place. Thank you.
Sat in their seating area at the back which was quite spacious for our family of 5. Kids enjoyed some time colouring in while waiting for our food. The baguettes were super delicious and we will definitely be back to try their other things on the menu.
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Awesome!
Pros - the juices, the mushroom breakfast (which was insanely good) and the staff
Cons - Slightly over priced, minimal seating.
Overall an awesome brekkie spot and would highly recommend.

I love this place! Delicious food and silky coffee. Great place to eat or just sit and watch the trams go past out the window.
A small little brunch spot in Brusnwick East full of interesting vegan options - not just your standard smashed avo for us vegans at this joint!
I chose the vegan fried kale with grilled tofu sanwich, and was not disappointed. Could have done with a little more seasoning on the tofu as i had to add some salt and pepper separately, but other than that was pleasant.
Coffee was also great.
Thanks Zomato Gold for another great deal :)
While I love porridge for breakfast, I rarely buy it out. But I was feeling like a sweet and comforting breakfast so I went for the porridge at Milkwood and it was just what I needed. The stewed pears made a perfect addition and helped to create something sort of like a crumble. The coffee is also nice, as is the service, but the space is small so there may be a wait.
Another great Modern Australian brunch place, Milkwood had a nice ‘home’ feel to it. The meals were delicious, the coffee was good, the service was friendly. The food and drink selections were decent as well. We had their banana cinnamon toast and eggs kerjiwal - and they were both really good! Highly recommend.
Chilly and freezing outside, we found that this place had another small back area via little alley entry next to the front of the cafe. Resembling an old church style home, this was lovely and quaint. Staff were nice and attentive and the food was soooo good!
Definitely recommended
I've just moved to the area but my housemates rave about this place and its carrot cake. Airy, light-filled space, lovely cafe for when the sun is out. The staff are super lovely, friendly and chatty (especially the barista), definitely a reason to keep coming back!
Great food, great coffee and extremely friendly service! Highly recommended for a chilling day out! The location is quite convenient and accessible too, since it's right across the street from the last stop of 86 tram line at Brunswick East.
The sign of a great cafe is when a party of 6 is welcomed and accommodated with ease and sat at a fantastic table. It gets better though!! We all ordered different meals and each of us were impressed with the flavour combinations on offer. I ordered the porridge and as a porridge expert, it was very good though not as smooth and creamy as i would expect, it was still delicious. My only criticism was my latte was just warm which is becoming a common issue a I make my way through Melbourne's best cafes. Everything on the menu here looks inviting and the staff are wonderful.
Great little cafe & such friendly staff! :) They really pay attention to the quality of their pastries & customer service. I had a butter croissant (which they toasted for me) with home made jam... absolutely delicious! The fit out has a cosy charm about it, will definitely go back again.
The crumpets with goats cheese and honey were delicious, the coffee great and the raspberry muffin extremely tasty. It's a very small cafe best avoided in winter if you can't sit inside as on a main road and not protected from dust and weather. If you can sit inside great, they don't take bookings.
Great coffee with great breakfast served. Strongly recommend the dish with mushroom and cheese! Good customer service, small and cozy. Maybe a little to small when it comes to peak hours where the crowd comes in.
Food was great and filling! Coffee was so good I had to get a second. Friendly staff. Went there on a very hot day and they made sure we were comfortable with some fans. Good options for gluten free people.
This little cafe has a lovely charm to it. With its open kitchen you receive an overwhelming smell of food. Lucky it smell delicious. I enjoyed the white beans with dukkah, with cherry tomatoes on toast. Was a generous serving however a little bland. Coffee was amazing! Would certainly pop in again if in the area!
I really enjoyed my breakfast, I admire a chef who can create such well seasoned and precise cooking in such a small space. Well done, hold your head up high. I really enjoyed the mushrooms on toast. Service was also spot on.

This is our second dining experience. Fantastic coffee (Wide Open Road) - correct temperature, not a hint of bitterness. Comforting hot chocolate. Creative, clever, wholesome and satisfying menu. Specials change quickly, so if you see something you might like to try, order it while it's hot! Cheeky decor with a recycled 60-70s finish. Smallish; Clean, light and airy with relaxed, friendly staff.
My friend has been raving about this cafe for ages now and he comes here by himself every morning so I thought I must try it.
I wasn't let down.
Such a cute cafe !
Interior and staff are on point. Food is simple but tasty. I had the mushrooms with potato Rosti. Was delicious.
Going back this morning for more!
Best coffee in the area .
Amazing service .
Fresh shop with fresh faces to help you with your needs and let likes .
My favourite place to be . Almost every day there
Milkwood is beautiful old fashioned cafe with a modern twist located lonesomely at the end of the Nicholson Street tram line in Brunswick. The tiny front of the cafe that only seats roughly 20 people with a few seats out the front creates a cosy inviting ambiance upon entering.
The fresh assortment of pastries and tarts on offer displayed behind a glass cabinet next to the register along with the lovely staff gives Milkwood an intimate snug vibe.
After being made aware of this vicinity in my local area for a lengthy period of time, on a freezing Sunday afternoon I opted to give the cafe a try late lunching with a friend. Once entering the front of the cafe that was packed, we where greeted by a nice waiter who informed us to take seats out the back. We braved the cold and exited the cafe to walk around the corner to enter the surprising large house like interior that seated several more customers enjoying the awesome Milkwood vibe in a house like venue. We took our seats and ordered hot beverages of choice being a cappuccino and the usual long mac.
The inside of the cafe is very modern with glistering white walls that create a very bright and vibrate environment with natural lighting provided by the glass panels at the back. The current design is balanced well with the old fashion structure of the building that has extraordinary large door ways with a low hanging ceiling.
Our drinks arrived and after analysing there classic brunch menu we ordered the oat porridge and the scrabbled eggs with hot smoked trout.
Whilst waiting for our meals to arrive we consumed the long mac that could of been improved with less milk and being served much hotter, had strong bold flavour. The cappuccino delivered better tasting properties as it was lovely and creamy with a generous dashing of chocolate ensuring that the coffee was not to strong for those to weak to become acquainted with the harsh palatable flavour of strong coffee.
Our meals arrived looking beautiful, presented with care and respect for the fresh organically sourced ingredients.
The Oat Porridge consisting of baked rhubarb and orange blossom with a brown sugar and macadamia crumble with the addition of almond milk was exactly what one needs on a freezing wet Sunday afternoon. The oats where cooked well still remaining a chewy texture whilst the rhubarb too pulled apart with ease and not overcooked adding a nice tangy bite to the dish. The brown sugar and macadamia crumble added the perfect crunch aspect creating for a very filling comforting bowl of goodness.
The scrambled eggs with hot smoked trout, dill and lemon, served with house pickled beetroot on a potato rosti was defiantly a standout dish. The thick potato rosti was lovely and crisp on the outside and fluffy on the inside and the creamy scrambled eggs combined with the trout was well seasoned paring well with the aromatic herbaceous flavour of the rosti. The beetroot pickle added great acidity to the dish ending a truly exciting tasting experience throughout its entire consumption.
Milkwood is a fabulous stand alone cafe that serves simple brunch food turned into magnificently classy meals. They could up there coffee game but the staff and shear diverse atmosphere this place offers makes it defiantly worthy of another visit.
i luvvvvv milkwood! the staff are always lovely, the food is crazy good and the coffee is my fave. it makes me happy that i live right around the corner
Very chilled vibe, staff are nice enough but the tall lady who is often seen behind the coffee machine is probably my favourite. Her love for coffee and what she does is rather infectious. Have not had the chance to actually eat here yet however I come multiple times for their fantastic coffee and awesome brownies. They do not disappoint!
A few years ago, when I lived northside and spent a lot of time around Smith Street, I first heard of pastry chef Pierre Roelofs' dessert degustations, then held at Fitzroy's Cafe Rosamond. (I've since heard they were previously at Monsieur Truffe's former Smith Street site.)
The idea was you paid a set price (around $50.00 each, from memory) for a set number of courses of dessert only. Yes, DESSERT ONLY. I remember being impressed by (a) the concept of a degustation comprising solely desserts (if you're a sweet tooth too - admit you're also in love with the idea), and (b) the variety explored within such a constricted genre - sometimes focused around certain ingredients, or catering to certain food requirements (e.g. lactose intolerant, vegan).
Lovely old house that's been converted. Back room was gorgeous. Loved the French doors and old booths. Front room which is the main shop was a busy space but very quaint. Food was nice, soy coffee not so much (milk had separated).
Great little spot for brunch on a Sunday. Was worried we weren't going to get a table because it was tiny and bustling when we walked in, but they have plenty more seating around the back, so we managed to score ourselves a booth. Had the chicken baguette which was light and fresh ingredients and just what I wanted. Great, attentive service. Also shared the caramel slice which, again, was deliciously light and fluffy and not overly sweet. Will be back to try the pancakes, they look delicious!
Milkwood is very small but definitely worth coming over too.
Their food is always fresh, hot and quick and their staff is always friendly and up for a chat.
Their fresh muffins and cakes are to die for and their coffee is delicious. Can get very busy but worth the wait.
Coffee was spot on when I attended on Saturday morning, and the counter staff were very friendly. Service was fast also. Will eat breakfast here one morning
One of my favourites - the service is quicky and easy, and the coffee/food great. I love the ricotta pancakes. There's a beautiful space out the back which is perfect for relaxing.
milkwood, i love you so much. i feel like i'm sitting in the pages of kinfolk and i'm not even saying that ironically. great food, great coffee, the backyard is lovely and the 3d dog painting above the toilet is adorable, i might just take it home. i wish you had wifi. if you did, i would never leave.
Came here for lunch today. Had a special with an omelette with mushrooms, ricotta and rocket and a pear, cucumber, avocado, walnut salad. Also took the banana and blueberry smoothie. Both dishes and the smoothie were good. Service was friendly. Sat out the front in the sun, which was really nice.
This place has a few flaws but gets a five for having the best breakfast dish in Melbourne hands down and possibly the entire world- their smashed peas and mint with poached eggs on garlic sourdough. The dish is perfectly balanced and I could basically eat it for every meal of the day, and props to them for a good almond latte as well. Room for improvement has nothing to do with the wonderful and varied food, more to do with the cold vibe from the staff and not the quickest service. But if you go make sure you get the peas it will have you riding the tram out there time and again!!!
A lovely unassuming cafe tucked away in the quieter part of Brunswick East, Milkwood looks like a small cafe, seating a handful of tables. However, once directed to the back, ‘through the French Lattice’ we are greeted with a well lit urban eating space which is charming and comfortable.
Love it here! Always such lovely service and an interesting twist on the modern Aussie breakfast.
Milkwood is such a cute little establishment. The staff are friendly and the food is honest - you can definitely feel the love! Had the bacon and egg roll with tomato relish and a side of potato rosti. The rosti deserves a special mention cause it's freaking delicious, with a punch of rosemary. I washed it down with a blueberry and banana smoothie, a vibrant shade of purple. Only criticisms would be that the baguette could have had more bacon (there was a lot of bread) and the food took quite a while to come out. Would come back.
Their soy caps never disappoint. Food is on the pricey side but it's to be expected for quality ingredients. There are often dogs hanging out front which is a plus for my little puppy you needs constant entertainment.
Really lovely chai tea and coffee here! Didn't get any food however the place was full of diners and the food looked delicious! Would definitely consider returning!
Great little spot, solid coffee with a La Marzoccco Linea and Wide Open Road Roast. I haven't eaten here yet but the menu looks delicious and pretty diverse. Hipster and quintessentially Brunswick!
Great food and friendly staff, its a great breakfast and brunch place. If you want to impress a friend take them to this place. Ive been a few times and each time i wasn't disappointed. Its great to go to places that can cook eggs well. Great coffee too, whenever i see a place that gets packed i have to try it and this one lives up to its reputation.
Have you ever made plans and then suddenly changed your mind because you saw something more interesting on the way there? Yuye and I were driving back from the airport to brunch one day and I had decided to go to Industry Beans in Fitzroy when all of a sudden Yuye yells out “stop the car, there’s a cafe with lots of people queuing up right there”. I usually wouldn’t stop just because I like to do my research before dining at a place but that day I was feeling adventurous. A u-turn and park later, we arrived at Milkwood, a small cafe in Brunswick East. ‘This better be a good investment’ I thought to myself and thankfully didn’t have to queue as there were tables free inside. It was a hot day so diners chose the outdoor dining option to get a bit of that rare sunshine now that the weather turned wintery all of a sudden. Can you believe it? It was 15 degrees the day before and then it was 28. Now as I’m typing this post, it’s pouring down outside and windy. Ahh the wonders of Melbourne. The menu here’s not too big with straight forward choices like baguettes and salads as well as breakfast choices. If you’re not keen on any of the pre-arranged dishes, you can always choose the basic poached eggs on sourdough ($8.50) and add your own toppings all for around $3.50 – $4 each. Yuye decided to order the pea, mint and broad bean smash served on garlicy sourdough with poached eggs and pecorino ($15) along with an extra serve of smoked salmon ($4.50). The dish was HUGE. It came on two pieces of quite large sourdough and on it was the smashed peas spread out as well as two eggs. The smash was quite minty and refreshing and served warm. With a small squeeze of lemon juice, it was a great start to our morning. The poached eggs were cooked perfectly as well with gooey runny yolk dribbling into the smash. The smoked salmon was a nice addition to the dish as it added a nice depth of flavour and it wasn’t too filling either. I ordered the warm cannelloni beans on toast with garlic ro
These mushrooms were amazing!! Not only were they cooked beautifully with a gorgeous mushroomy flavour – there was lemon zest through it. This gave it a real aromatic lift and complemented the dish wonderfully. The ricotta was smooth, creamy and luscious – and the sourdough bread was chewy and dense. A fantastic dish!
The most comfortable delicious breakfast rut ever!. I first came here on a recommendation and have been back several times since as I cannot get enough of their broad bean and mint smash, sourdough and poached egg combo! The coffee is seriously good too, you'd think the beans came out of a cat if the if the price wasn't soo reasonable! The other items on the menu are always fresh and flavorsome too; I always have a sample of my dining partners choice.
Love love love! Come here time and time again for the delicious food, coffee and fantastic service. A local fav!
Soo good!. Really like this place, great atmosphere, good service and very good food.
I always get the chicken baguette which is so filling, yummy and healthy. Don't get me started on the cakes/sweets (mouthwatering)
The only improvement could be the coffee, a couple of times I've received it cold :(
Otherwise, would definitely recommend this place.
Great food and coffee. I would recommend Milkwood for their food and delicious coffee. I love coming here when it isn't too busy. Great service and value for money.
Always a winner. Milkwood is always there for your brekkie or lunch or sweet needs.
Service is always friendly and working hard in that tiny kitchen area.
New specials weekly.
Clean and cosy.
Tasty tasty food
Great coffee
Not sure why there are negative and some nasty reviews urbanspoon is about reviewing places not taking a stab at staff or what kind of people eat in this cafe.
I've been coming here for years and the clientel is mixed of everyone. Students, locals, kids, couples, office workers etc. So just chill if you write a review on a cafe no need to get so personal. Just summarise your experiance and well that's it.
Lovely dish, a bit heavy if u eat the whole thing, will need a Nanna nap afterwards.
Largest Most Delicious Coffee. Whilst the service was very friendly and the baguettes were delicious (although needed some extra seasoning) the big bowl of coffee was the highlight for our brunch! The cakes we took home were also scrumptious. Thanks ladies :)
Amazing. Have been to Milkwood so many times and it never fails. The food is fantastic, great service and ambience. It isnt the biggest place and a small kitchen does mean you can wait a while for food but it's worth it just for that amazing locally sourced Chorizo!! Keep up the good work! Also great coffee!
Perfect! Service quick, s.... Perfect!
Service quick, super fresh produce, and a well put together breaky!
Yum!. I'm obsessed with the pea, mint & broadbean smash! I find it hard to order anything else. Sometimes the food can take awhile, but it's worth it. The coffee and baked goods are delish too!
Two friends and I found this place searching the net, went in one Thursday morning, and fell in love! Great coffee, simple menu but absolutely delicious! Reasonably priced for such a tasty meal! Will definitely be going here again.
Although this place is overpriced and often understaffed it's still worth it for the delicious breakfast and baguettes. Coffee is almost always good and the staff are always friendly. The ham baguette is a must try as it's made with delicious thick cut ham off the bone.
Another great Modern Australian brunch place, Milkwood had a nice ‘home’ feel to it. The (typical brunch) meals were delicious, the coffee was good, the service was friendly. The food and drink selections were decent as well. We had their banana cinnamon toast and eggs kerjiwal - and they were both really good! Highly recommend.
Lovely little breakfast (or lunch!) spot. Cozy, quirky surroundings and delicious food and drinks.
Food was great, table service was great. Sat in the courtyard out the back with my dogs. Nobody else out there. Waitress commented that the only people outside today were people with their dogs. There was a bowl for their water. When I went to pay the chef was taking payment & made a comment about ‘where they out there there the whole time you were eating?’ then something about ‘I’m just a Chef but dogs shouldn’t be around food’. Put a dampener on the experience. Stay in the kitchen buddy. People skills aren’t your forte.
Just amazing food and staff xxx highly recommend!
Great service, good food and coffee. Went for take away during lockdown 5.0 and staff was very friendly, opened the door for me because I was holding 2 coffees and a ham chesse croissant.
Fantastic food, coffee and service, set in gorgeous, comfortable surrounds. Milkwood is definitely at the top of my list of best cafes in town.
Had the Rhubarb pancakes. Fantastic! Loved it. Sweet venue that doesn't get too loud when full.
The honey comb was a little over done but otherwise I was very satisfied by the food and coffee! Staff are a little slow to service the table.
Breakfast foods and bagels all day.
Went here on the long weekend and had a great brunch. We came with a pram and three dogs and they were super accomdating moving two tables together outside. My food was lovely (mushrooms) plus I got a generous side of bacon! The service (drinks order) was pretty slow considering we had a double espresso and flat white, but would still recommend if you aren't in a rush!
