This new restaurant deserves to be at the top of your list for things to do and places to go. The atmosphere is warm and welcoming, and there is enough space around the tables so you are not forced to almost sit on each other's laps like in so many other eateries. The kitchen is open to the dining area and you get to watch the staff prepare your order if you want. On the floor, Vivian takes the term 'service with a smile' literally, tending to your requests quickly, efficiently and friendly in way that makes you feel right at home. And for once you are able to enjoy dinner in good company without having any attempt at a conversation drowned out by sound systems cranked up to ear drum busting levels - yes they have music, jazz mostly which goes very nicely with the place and the food - but they play it in the background adding to the ambience. Now for the food itself. Cajun is a style of cooking named after the Acadian people deported from Canada to Louisiana in the dark ages. The food is rich, mildly spicy and simply delicious. Before the Moldy Fig opened its doors I had heard of things like 'gumbo' but never tried them, simply because despite Melbourne's cultural diversity it wasn't on the menu anywhere. Its share style, ideally you go with a couple of friends and just order up and down the menu whatever tickles your fancy. I've been a few times now and at first thought the broccoli and rice casserole was my favourite - creamy, tasty and just enough spice to make you want more. But then I tried the pork belly and changed my mind. Until I tried the Southern Fried Chicken. The Dirty Flirty Rice. You get the drift. The desserts are mouth watering too, and a special mention must go to the cinnamon and bacon scrolls topped with a caramel sauce. So good. Did I mention they know their wines and how to treat them? Finally someone who serves me my red at the right temperature and not straight from the drinks fridge. If you are reading this and haven't been, you don't know what you are missing. Go. Now. Have you booked yet?

Although not a place I'd typically visit, I thoroughly enjoyed my experience at The Moldy Fig for dinner the other night. I'd never been to a New Orlean's style restaurant so this was something new and it was great to experience a slice of this culture.

We ordered two cocktails, the Meatballs Po'boy, Chicken Southern Bites and the Louisiana Blackened Chicken. The stand out dish was definitely the blackened chicken. It was so full of flavour & the paella was so delicious - I could easily eat that on it's own. The strong flavours of a mix of herbs made it unlike any other chicken dish I've had before and the tomatoes just burst in your mouth giving you that freshness.

The southern bites were nice although we were expecting a different type of batter. They're served with two different dipping sauces which again are super tasty. The Po'boy is basically a New Orleans style burger which tasted pretty homestyle and was a great portion size.

The staff were friendly, there was even a live musician and it was really nice meeting the owner too.

If you're in the Brunswick area, The Moldy Fig is definitely not to be missed!

After watching a bunch of American food documentaries, I've been hanging for some Louisiana style cooking. The Moldy Fig brings you back to the 1920s with their live Jazz music New Orleans style food. We ordered:

Creole Potato Salad - so light and fresh, perfect with the lamb ribs and heavy meat dishes to break it up
Corn on Cob - I loved the flavours of the corn and with a little home brewed hot sauce and imported Louisiana hot sauce - WOW

Seafood Gumbo - hearty and rich, perfect for cold nights and portion was just right!

Lamb Ribs - the lamb was my favourite dish of the night, dry rubbed yet still very juicy, tender and sweet!

Overall a fun night, great food and lovely staff. They also offer an extensive list of cocktails and drinks, great spot for food or a few drinks!

The jumbalaya jazzed my soul, carried my tastebuds downtown, and seduced my palatte with silky smooth saxophone overtones. The tenderness of the pork belly would make a rock jelly, and it soothed my tongue, gliding into my belly like a spoonfull of jelly. The loaded fries shot through my system like a loaded gun and fried my neurons as it blew my mind into oblivion. As for the ambience, the restaurant's white light pierced my soul while the jazz rhythm brought me back to life. You know what they say in New Orleans, IT WAS FIGin' AWESOME!!!

At $35 pp for 7 courses the Feeling Hungrier banquet is crazy good value and every dish is delicious! My favourite the Jamabalaya, a prawn and chicken rice dish, was just how I remember it from my trip to New Orleans. The other stand out dishes were the gumbo and the blackened chicken, although I think their homemade hot sauce stole the show for my spice loving friend. The staff are friendly and helpful and with the open kitchen its a pleasure to have peek in the kitchen to see the chefs at work. Its a cool laid back atmosphere with the jazz band in the corner adding to the vibe without being so loud that you can't have a chat.

I came to The Moldy Fig with a friend and used a Groupon voucher. I didn’t manage to take photos of all the food but it was all so good. My favorite was the baked cheese. If I had to say something bad it would just be that there was quite a bit of time between the food coming out, other than that I loved it and I would return back.

I visited here with a 45% off EatClub voucher and very glad I did. I wouldn't have been satisfied with the food and experience if I'd paid full price, but at a discount it seemed worth it. The space is very dark and not too inviting, so I suggest you sit at the window seat if available. To eat, I ordered the sweet potato cakes, slaw and gumbo to share with a friend (all vegan). The cakes were easily the best thing I tried, nicely fried and coated in a cornmeal crumb. They have great flavour and texture and were served with a deliciously sticky caramelised onion cluster. The slaw was okay, a bit bitter. The gumbo was pretty good with a rich tomato flavour, but contained barely any rice. It also came out way later than the other dishes. I understand they're starters but I wanted to eat everything together- I guess I should have specified that. I really want to give this place the benefit of the doubt considering they have lots of vegan options, the staff are nice albeit a bit off their game, and it's one of the few spots in Melbourne serving this sort of cuisine. They really deserve a 3.5 but hopefully with some tweaks, they could improve.

Went on a Tuesday night with a Groupon voucher purchased. Very nice atmosphere in the seating area, but the heater wasn't working well in the restaurant so we were both a bit cold. We ordered loaded fries as entrée, shared the braised beef brisket & Southern deep fried chicken po'boys, and had seafood Étouffée & cajun baked chilli beans for mains. The foods were amazing, we loved the po'boys - the fried chicken was so tender and juicy, and the marinated cabbage slaw inside tasted light and refreshing. The étouffée was rich in flavour, with heaps of mussels and shrimps inside.

Except for the nice foods, we were also pleased by the service there. The lady recommended us some menu items, also asked us proactively if we'd like to have the po'boys cut into 2 for sharing. (which it's very thoughtful to me!) We didn't order any drinks, but she's really attentive and got us new bottles of table water whenever it's running out. Overall I highly recommend this place for a nice date night or a quiet dinner with good atmosphere.

I loved my experience at The Moldy Fig and it brought back fond memories of my time in New Orleans earlier this year.
My friend and I opted for the ‘Feeling Hungrier?’ banquet which consists of the following dishes:
*Homemade Cornbread (mixed flavours of original, garlic and chilli): these were served warm with butter and were simply delicious, my favourite was the chilli.
*Roasted Chicken Wingettes: juicy chicken and the marinate was nice. The blue cheese range dressing was really good (without being over powering like some blue cheese sauces I’ve had in the past).
*Loaded Fries: I loved the roasted capsicum and onion on these - simple but so flavoursome.
*Chicken and Andouille Sausage Gumbo: wow, I loved this dish. Such a rich and hearty meal, so much flavour.
*Prawn and Chicken Jambalaya: another lovely dish. A tomato based sauce with generous amounts of chicken and prawn.
*Beef Grillades: another rich and hearty meal. The beef was cooked to perfection and easily came apart. The mushrooms and mash topped this off.
*Cajun Seasonal Vegetables: I liked the yellow beans in this dish, they were sweeter than the green beans. The sundried tomato and herb sauce was good.
I ended my dining experience with sticky date pudding (one of my favourite types of dessert) - this dish was so yummy and you could smell the banana before even cutting in it it.
My friend got the Fig and ricotta hot cakes, I sampled a small piece and thought they were nice too.

I loved the laidback vibe of the restaurant and the blurry painting of Bourbon Street on the wall is great.

Staff were very friendly and each course of food came out promptly. Great value for money.
I will definitely be returning to try other items on the menu and have a cocktail or two.

It you are desperate to go to New Orleans but can't, visit the Moldy Fight instead.

Mother Darrell the chef and the daughter Vivian the maître d' are an amazing team. Darrell spent a lot of her career perfecting foods from New Orleans.

We started our night with pomegranate and passionfruit hurricane signature cocktail which includes white & dark rum, pomegranate, passion fruit and oranges the cocktails were sweet and refreshing.

We had a selection of Louisiana foods including the 3 varieties of homemade cornbread with butter. The cornbread was soft and fluffy and came with 3 varieties original, garlic and chilli.

We tried Po'boy which is a New Orleans style of burgers using baguette instead. The Southern Fried Chicken Po' boy was delicious and the pulled pork Po boy was too, the pork was slow cooked in apple sauce.

The ribs of the day was lamb. The meat fell off the bones, omg. For dessert we recommend the Mississippi mud cup. This cake was so decadent with cherry,  chocolate and cream.

Modly Fig is designed to factor in the New Orleans feel and vibe with live music every night to give you the experience of Cajun feel, the design of the restaurant brings out the Spanish, French and African American feel. We were very fortunate to dine as guests at Modly Fig & would return- due to it's authentic cuisine and vibe.

Fantastic food and drinks! Wonderful service!! The attention to detail is spot on. The flavours of the food and their condiments, the cocktails and mocktails, absolutely wonderful. A lovely place to go either solo or with a group, you won't be disappointed. The live music fits the atmosphere to a tee, without being so loud that you can't have a conversation. Lovely evening, and will be back soon!!

What a great atmosphere here at the Mouldy Fig. A jazz duo playing and professional friendly staff added to the vibes. I ordered the Lamb ribs with Louisiana BBQ sauce, a half serve, along with a half serve of the "greens", washed down with an apperol spritzer. The greens were delicious. The lamb was good in some parts, but when I hit some big blobs of white fat, I was disappointed. Fat needs to be fully rendered on this dish, so I found myself leaving bits. The bits that were fully rendered were scrumptious 😋.

Great atmosphere, lovely staff, yummy food. From what I saw (sitting near the bar, by the front door) this is a 100% covid safe & compliant business.

We just spent a phenomenal evening at The Moldy Fig! The masterful Tony J King provided the perfect musical accompaniment and the exuberant manager Rochelle delighted both my sociable self & my reserved husband. The food was top quality and so authentic it brought back memories of my time in the US. We'll be back!

Thank you for such a nice dinner delivered to our house! After our fifth day of iso due to covid we decided to get some food delivered by Uber eat - so many options sounded amazing but we were a little worried about being disappointed due to travel time. The food was perfectly packaged and so fresh and fragrant! After days and days of left overs and less than average deliveries from other places, your food truly felt like a proper treat - so tasty, smelled amazing and was enough for us to do it all over again tonight (in smaller quantities as sit was too good to stop eating it all yesterday) Can’t wait to have recovered to try the place itself - what a wonderful surprise ! Thank you 😊
