This new restaurant deserves to be at the top of your list for things to do and places to go. The atmosphere is warm and welcoming, and there is enough space around the tables so you are not forced to almost sit on each other's laps like in so many other eateries. The kitchen is open to the dining area and you get to watch the staff prepare your order if you want. On the floor, Vivian takes the term 'service with a smile' literally, tending to your requests quickly, efficiently and friendly in way that makes you feel right at home. And for once you are able to enjoy dinner in good company without having any attempt at a conversation drowned out by sound systems cranked up to ear drum busting levels - yes they have music, jazz mostly which goes very nicely with the place and the food - but they play it in the background adding to the ambience.
Now for the food itself. Cajun is a style of cooking named after the Acadian people deported from Canada to Louisiana in the dark ages. The food is rich, mildly spicy and simply delicious. Before the Moldy Fig opened its doors I had heard of things like 'gumbo' but never tried them, simply because despite Melbourne's cultural diversity it wasn't on the menu anywhere.
Its share style, ideally you go with a couple of friends and just order up and down the menu whatever tickles your fancy. I've been a few times now and at first thought the broccoli and rice casserole was my favourite - creamy, tasty and just enough spice to make you want more. But then I tried the pork belly and changed my mind. Until I tried the Southern Fried Chicken. The Dirty Flirty Rice. You get the drift.
The desserts are mouth watering too, and a special mention must go to the cinnamon and bacon scrolls topped with a caramel sauce. So good.
Did I mention they know their wines and how to treat them? Finally someone who serves me my red at the right temperature and not straight from the drinks fridge.
If you are reading this and haven't been, you don't know what you are missing. Go. Now.

Wow is all I can use to describe this place not only was the food some of the best I have ever had but the service was just out of this world. Vivian just mad it worth every cent I spent there you can not get any better I will definitely be telling all my friends about this place in high regards
Had the chance to dine here over cup week and I can not say enough about this little gem. With my Polynesian appetite I was hopeful for a meal that was tasty and filling and I was not at anytime let down and loved the concept of sharing the meal. from the first nibble to the last myself and guests were satisfied and delighted with the entire meal and only wish we could have tried more from the menu.
The live entertain was also a real treat and whole ambience of the place was delightful to enjoy. The staff were attentive and very polite and nothing was to much trouble. Look forward to returning to the Moldy Fig whenever in Melbourne...5 starts
