Review A1 Bakery - Brunswick

Save The World Kim
Always a line but quick serve of INCREDIBLE food. Vegan options galore! Definitely a family run business feel with a small Middle Eastern grocery. You will not be disappointed. Apparently, it has been around since 1992. Made with love for a long time!

We just ordered a latte here and really enjoyed the latte as well as the ambience. People who worked here were very friendly and the vibe was lively. They also have a mini supermarket stocked with certain products for customers to buy. I definitely wanna try their desserts soon. Good place to go for a cup of coffee and chat with friends.

A1 Bakery’s venue was old and run down, however they served the most amazing middle eastern pastries and pizzas. All the dishes I’d tried were so tasty; meaty, cheesy and packed with fragrant middle eastern spices. Highly recommended if you felt like good value middle eastern cuisine.

A1 is a cult classic and one of the first cafes I dropped into when venturing in Brunswick. Always bustling and rightfully so - there is a feast of delish middle eastern delights to be had 🥙 The cheese pie CANNOT be passed up under any circumstances 🙅‍♀️ it is too good. Zaatar is nice and fresh too. Falafel wrap with the pickles plate as extra is a winner. Nice chips. The meat options are exceptionally well done (cooking wise) which isn't my all-time favourite but never go wrong with the array of other options. Lovely family owned establishment with staff that really care. They are devoted to freshness and will even hand out remaining pitas from the day for free. That's a commitment to freshness! 🌱 Nice work guys, see you again soon! Edit - got the cheese pie and hummus w/ lamb platter + pickle platter delivered. Yum! Fresh and full of life!

I love this bakery! Delicious, great atmosphere. This time I tried their tabouli, falafel wrap and shanklish platter. I am stuffed but I wish I could eat more. I can't wait for my next visit

Food was brought up very quickly and it tasted actually not bad based on it’s price, only 10$ for a A1 special pizza. I can see why it’s so busy and popular. Totally worth a try.

Awesome food. Most things are in house made. The breads absolutely delicious, there a reason why this place is always busy with people grabbing quick bites for breakfast or lunch.

After seeing the Anthony Bourdain episode that included A-1, I made the trip to try it for myself. So glad I did! So many choices and all were equally delicious. Literally bought enough food to feed four people (even though there were only two of us) and spent just over $30. I can’t wait to go back.

Been here too many times to count! Perfect for a light meal, or you can get the platters if you're more hungry. Prices are very decent for the portion and quality of food. There is usually a line when ordering, but it's definitely worth it because it moves quickly and the food is always delicious. My personal favourite is the cheese (halloumi) pie. Love all of the dips as well.
Time2EatMelb
I loved the food including the Zataar, Cheese pie, and Cheese and spinach Triangle. It is a very good price and the staff there are very nice. My only criticism is at times it can get noisy and crowded. It is a great place to eat and I would definitely recommend it.

Ok for some reason we’ve only tried A1 at some of the other outlets, never the big Brunswick one. Oh my god, it’s amazing. The cheese in the spinach and cheese triangle was so incredibly fresh and soft. The meat pizza was fantastic. A great coffee too. We will trek back over again soon!

It’s hectic inside but they run a tight ship.

There is a reason A1 is always packed. If you value your happiness, you must order the foul moudammas - too delicious for words. They also have some of the best falafel. All baked items can be made with vegan cheese instead of regular cheese if you would so prefer. You will froth.
Quince And Cheese
I'm so lucky to live down the street from this local gem. There are lots of Lebanese bakeries around but A1 is one of the best thanks to its large space and varied, inexpensive, vegan-friendly menu. I usually go for the falafel platter full of pickles and tahini. But a haloumi pizza or pide and a coffee is always a great option as well.
SJFU
The labne here is so rich and flavourful! Everything was so delicious and fresh for such a budget price. Super efficient service to handle the crowds.

I heard great things about A1 Bakery, so I stopped here for a snack while exploring Melbourne. I got the cheese triangle and Halloumi bread, and was happy but not blown away. Both have awesome crispy, soft, slightly sweet bread, and the filings are generous and tasty, but there's nothing that really stood out for me. I'll have to come back for something with Falafel in it, but for now, my review is decent but not excellent.

Cheese triangle: 6/10

I love the old school resturant style, the little continental shop which is also inside was so sweet

The prices of the dishes were such good value for the size. I ordered lamb on hummus which came with pita to dip it was my first time ordering this I loved it can't wait to come back and try again.

I also ordered falafel which came with pita, tahini dip and a side of mixed pickled veg. The combination just worked the creamy tahini and tart veg was a taste sensation.

My husband had the cheese pie and loved the doughiness of the pastry we will certainly be back
Leila
Really enjoyed the chicken platter and pizzas, generous portions, but I found the place to be a bit overhyped.

Amazing place never seems to disappoint

Great afternoon snack! Eggplant dip was flavoursome, hummus sooo creamy. Love it!

Portion is huge for the price The bread is amazing, fresh from the oven! Definitely recommended. The line can be overwhelming but it moves really fast. Staff is very friendly too so you don’t feel like the wait is bad at all!
Little Bit Of Everything
A1 bakery is certainly one of my favourite places in Melbourne. I keep going back for more and more. They have been running this business for a few generations and food tastes authentic and freshly made. I always bring back some freshly baked bread.
Cheap food and excellent service. It's a huge warehouse which is converted to a restaurant. High ceilings and old school furniture sets the vibe for one of the most authentic bakeries in Melbourne.
I have tried pretty much everything on their menu, my favourites are Zatar and all their dips which are served with generous portion of bread.

A1 Bakery’s ambiance felt old and run down, however they served the most amazing middle eastern pastries and pizzas. All the dishes I’d tried were so tasty; meaty, cheesy and packed with fragrant middle eastern spices. Highly recommended if you were after an affordable middle eastern cuisine.
Devil In The Detail
Great options, super friendly environment, always busy. So many options for a cheap and filling meal. Highly recommended for families, couples or individuals on the go...

Always good quality man’oushe here. I’ve never eaten in, but it’s great for a quick run in and out lunch stop. The labneh pizza is my pick and of course a za’atar with hot black tea.
Jessie
Ridiculous sums up this place: cheap, bountiful and packed with flavor. For around 12 bucks I got ful with a mezzo, mint tea, and a zatar bread. The bread was totally not needed but totally worth it. If you never have had ful try it; bowl of slightly mashed chickpeas and fava beans served warm with generous amount of lemon and olive oil added. Comes on this massive plank with a mezze. The zatar bread is classic warm and soft like a pillow with so much spice added it gets all over your hands which is a happy place to be. Tea is strong black tea with fresh mint simple delicious.
Food For Thought
From the outside, it looked a little like an industrial warehouse but once you walk past the chairs and tables, there is a queue for ordering lebanese style pizzas. The taste of spices and sesame seeds on the freshly made stretched zaatar pizza was incredible. There are so many other options to try as well and I definitely will be back.

One of the coolest and most authentic, no fuss bakeries I’ve ever seen! It’s a huge warehouse and when you walk in, you instantly get a whiff of that amazing bread smell and it intoxicates you and when you’re ordering the food, you get to see the bakers in action so you know your pastries are super FRESH ! I tried the shanklish pie, took away one pita and tried their hummus. Their shanklish pie was delicious and it’s great as a snack or even a meal itself! The yoghurt based cheese is so unique and it’s almost like fetta but better and the pastry was so SOFT and fluffy! I LOVED it! The pita was great too and the hummus is more on the sour-y side so if you like your hummus thick and less garlicky, you’ll like it!
DE HARAMBE
This is a great establishment with affordable and tasty food! i would highly recommend their cheese pie it was fantastic!!!! i would definitely come back with my friend.
Baira
This half and half platter for $14 is so good. Quite affordable food, rich in flavour- value for money. This place gives you a whole different vibe ! Also their falafel balls are so crunchy and fresh.
Nabeel Deen
Great place for a quick bite. Tables are a bit shaky but that doesn't matter as the food was really good. We had the Chicken Tawouk Platter. The bread had well seasoned juicy chicken filling. The hot chips were great. The addition of the garlic sauce, pickeled veges and cabbage coleslaw gave the dish another dimension. Everything eaten together made sence. A very good dish overrall.
Whalesfoodadventure
Cheap and cheerful! Falafel playe was real good! Falafels were juicy and no dry. Zaatar vegetarian pizza satisfied my tastebuds. Spinach and feta pide pie was abit too thick dough but great taste
THEJUGERNAUTS
Great place to visit. Large space, ramshackly furniture but all very traditional and the food is so good. Affordable and tasty. Second visit. Good!!

This place is a Brunswick institution. I've been going to A1 for over ten years and it never ever ever let's me down. The food is cheap and awesome, the coffee is like 3 bucks and vegitarian chicks dig it so hard. It's a wicked first date place. Especially if you're trying to bang a vegan/vegitarian.
Mike
Probably one of my favourite places in the world.
Absolutely divine middle eastern baked goods, can’t go wrong with the meat and zaatar pizza options. Been here hundreds of times and hope this place continues to thrive.

There are few places which have this addictive positive vibe and energy... A1 Bakery is one such place. It's always buzzing with customers and busy serving authentic tasty Lebanese food at most reasonable prices. We tried Meat Pizza (not in picture), Falafel Platter and Kafta Platter. Awesome fresh food.... will visit again

Had zaatar with fresh veggies and the spinach triangle. Spinach triangle is a lemony heaven. Gonna eat it more often I think. Enjoyable experience

This place is an institution and it’s popularity is reflected in the queues of people from all walks of life who visit A1. It’s quick, great value and delicious. We had the mixed platter and a few meat pizzas and cheese pies to take away.

I had been here once along with my family. This place surprised us in terms of variety /quality and price. Price is very competitive and at the same time food quality is good. Must try Lebanese in Brunswick..!!
Peter
This was the first experience. I had meat pizza, hotdog pastry and a pastry with meat. The food tasted great. However, if you get to make a mistake in the order, your food is practically thrown into the oven. It was like throwing a stick for a dog to fetch.
I have informed the waiter about it as I didn't want to do a scene. She was very apologetic. She said that it was Lebanese tradition to do things fast, and throwing things into the oven in a hurry. Regardless, I found this offensive as an Australian. I guess I need to adapt into other cultures.
Oana Cristina
I ordered the mixed dips with flat bread and spinach & cheese pocket. Really tasty dips, especially the eggplant dip...it’s my favourite.
I also bought Irani flat bread take away...omg best flat bread I’ve ever had, so much flavour and aroma in that bread, it’s amazing.
Max Mannix
Crikey, the food here is so good (and affordable!) that I bought myself an A1 T-Shirt to wear.

If you haven't been yet, check it out. The falafel wrap is tasty, but get yourself a Cheese Pie (haloumi) with it!
Diva Isabel Nebreda
This is one of the best place!!The food is amazing, full of flavour, cheap very cheap, I really like the atmosphere! I will go out a million time more!! Is amazing place and so fresh!
Danielleeokeefe
Iconic Brunswick experience. The cheese pie will always be my favourite, which is baked fresh and filled with delicious haloumi. The coffee is amazing and so cheap!

Can’t believe it took me so long to come to this place. Great food at very low prices. Lebanese pizzas are great. I recommend getting the basic ones. They’re the best.

TL;DR: I will just leave it at this, A1 proved to be really delicious food. It is an institution to itself in Melbourne and there are many good reasons for that. The lack of ambiance gets made up for by having some of the tastiest fare, quickest service to the table, and mouth-watering treats aplenty.

For ever since many a people have been able to remember, Brunswick and this place in particular, have been a big mecca in the Melburian Lebanese community, and those reasons become really apparent quickly just from just a mere visit to this place. It has it all going on here, part eatery, part speciality store, and part international groceries - experience has often found these places to suit the best of all worlds when it comes to a specialised and focused eating experience and here is absolutely no exception. The proof is in the pudding from expansion due to it being so popular, and each location boasts some accolades.

Upon short notice, an event had brought me down to Melbourne along with my parents. This was going to be a quick and short stay (only about two to three days tops), with not much time to really do any exploring around town. Right upon touching down in town, the schedule was almost in full gear. There was a place to be in the late afternoon/evening, and checking into the hotel was not viable for another few hours, plus it happened to be around lunch time. What insured was a bit of a drive, which led us into the Brunswick area of town. It was getting busy around this time of day, with all sorts of places open for lunch; after finding a good place to park the car,

Spending so much time up north, it kind of makes you forget just how much more buzzing a place - even something considerably low-key - can be within Sydney, and particularly Melbourne. Buzzing was definitely the key word with A1, as a combination of hawk-eyes and competitiveness was vital to secure a seat during the high time. And what possibly makes this more striking is from the outside, this looks like any old crappy bakery (regular, Middle Eastern-based or whatever) and is a lot bigger on the inside.

An under-rated - or possibly over-looked aspect - that really distinguishes these sort of places usually is if the specialty fare is able to be bough as groceries. When that is the case, the make-up of the food is more authentic and better value, and that is only said because it is apparent at A1 in Brunswick. All sorts of Middle Eastern and Lebanese groceries are able to be purchased, including drinks from the fridge. While you wait for the food to arrive, this is worth having a squiz even out of mere interest.

A lot of adjectives could be rattled of in order to give an idea of how it is with aesthetics, the vibe, and whatnot. To put brevity into it, the whole set up is fairly rough, the service is efficient and impersonal (don't take that to heart - it really gives it an odd charm that is hard to deny), and through it all they are certainly doing something right - almost every table here was filled up with patrons, and I could infer that many of them were return clients.

When it comes to the service, after grabbing a spare table and a menu that is lying around, just queue up in line (and it can get quite long, have someone in your team stay at the table) and order it at the counter then pay. In not too long, one of the waitstaff will be making their way through the labyrinth of tables and place it down before you know it. Separate counters are there for the sweets/coffee and savoury fare.

Lebanese in the name of the game here, and the focus of the game is on pastries, pizza and even some kebabs. Most of the individual items are less than $10 a-pop, and is easily shared between a couple of people. These are some pies, pizzas in a distinct style, and even just the bread with a few dips and/or olive oil mixture on top. Wraps are also available, and always act as a good buy. Even more so than the individual items, the platters act as a good additional option to share around some mezes with a few garnishes and still won't break the bank. What makes it even better is that everything is made from scratch and to order; if you get the right angle you can see the cooks going at what seems like the speed of light preparing dozens of pizzas at a time. For something sweet, the cabinet displays a few different specialties from the region, all available with the usual range of tea and coffee. For something cold, there are the fridges giving out all the usual suspects and even some more specialised drinks in the grocery section.

Though what is possibly the big draw-card here is the catering menu. For a small price per unit, across the board there are the popular favourites of pizzas, pastries, pieces of kebab, breads and whatnot. The standout here - with several days advance needed - is the whole spring lamb.

Among the three of us, it was getting a few items to share around the table. It might not have been the biggest menu, but it is one of this modest menus that manages to be difficult to decide what to get. My dad is a bit versed in the Lebanese cooking from his years as a young man around here and Adelaide, so he knew what he was doing.

The first order was a bit of an accidental one, since according to my dad's words he was going for one item but possibly requested another one with a similar name; this meaning, what he thought would be a plate of three small cheese pastries ended up being a big piece of cheese pie each. These were delicious, the cheese that filled the pastry was haloumi and each bite of it was light, fluffy, and with a flavour that was not too strong. I honestly don't think I had haloumi grated until then, and it did pretty well.

There was also some kafta ordered, as well as a chicken tourak platter. The former being the delicious lamb skewers, the spices and the meat are a winning combination. They came with some pita bread, and labne dip which is all you need for a decent wrap. And there is plenty of pita bread to go around - they are generous here. The chicken tourak wrap, had chicken fresh off the spit all nice and juicy rolled into delicious pita bread, served alongside a good selection of sides - fries, pickled cucumbers, turnips, some coleslaw and garlic paste. The fries were decent, and the garlic paste was brilliant with a bit of pita bread dipped in. I recall tying one of the pickled vegetables which had a good vinegar bite to it.

Afterwards, the prospect was up about going to get some coffee and sweets. It was fairly clear I was going to try and get a coffee afterwards, and that was a way to rope in some sweets. One unfortunate aspect is they don't do the Lebanese coffees here but just the espresso-based beverages. That was a bit of a draw-back, but nevertheless it was onto getting a doppio for me. I can't remember what bean they use here, however it was not a bad one at all. It had a good, smooth taste and was a decent strength. Pipping hot, well extracted, and everything. This might not have been the most perfect cup, however it was certainly competently made. The first course managed to do well.

It goes without saying that a couple of sweets were acquired alongside the coffees. At the time, the option range was not very big. From the small selection, two a-piece was gotten of baklava and semolina cake. Both were delicious, the baklava with the whole heap of honey it has, and the almond-based notes of the semolina cake. These are the kinds for those who might enjoy a sweet here and there, but not quite be too fussed on everything being so sweet. We have two-for-two here.

Coming from someone who is a Brisbanite, you do not often see somewhere like this up here to often. That is somewhere in which in spite of everything appearing so rough around the edges, fairly ad-hoc in how operations are done, but ironically so endearing that all those reservations easily get balanced out with the addition of food that is good quality, good value, and fantastic flavour. Also, the fact that this town (Melbourne) is more so associated with Lebanese than Brisbane gives it a novel appearance at least from my own perspective. This is the real sort of dining experience that will leave an impression, with the whole vibe, truly delicious fare, and a combination of locals knowing its whereabouts and out-of-towners merely stumbling upon it - that proves a charm all on its own.

Great street food done really cheaply. Always delicious and fresh. Nice for a lunch catch up. Fave: spinach and cheese triangles. Please note: There can be a bit of line at lunch time. But it's worth it as the food comes straight from the oven.
Smita Acharya
We love the Lebanese food here. It is always bang on flavour without burning a hole in your pocket. Mind you this is more like Cafe and not fancy at all. Love their zaatar, spinach pockets, chicken tawook, falafel, dips, etc.
Can be quite busy on weekends and there might be a considerable wait. But service is quick. Don't forget to check out their store while you wait for your food.

This bakery is definitely a local gem. From outside this place isn’t much, but it’s actually huge inside, and offers a large space for dine-in customers. Ordered the cheese pie and falafel platter. The portion was surprising! Perfect for sharing. Saw a lot of families eating there, so it must be family friendly. The service wasn’t much but then again it doesn’t really matter when the food was good and the price was cheap.
Iris Myandowski
I have an overwhelming feeling of being disapproved of when here, but by gosh are these good falafels and various other reasonably priced bakery items.
Yummy 😋
Super value meal. Very quick service. I really love the dips and falafel platter here. I have seen it always busy. This place has very good and fresh fast moving breads.

We are regulars at A1 Bakery, both for food and groceries. This review will be updated with other things we usually try from them.

Ambiance: Large and inviting store front, parking can be a bit of a challenge since it's Sydney road.

Food: Pictured are the spinach and halloumi cheese, zaatar, Fatayar.

We took it to go as an Iftaar entree and were not disappointed. It was cheesy, ooey and gooey, and the spinach came thru in every bite. It was a bit on the salty side for us, but still very good.

Price: Approx. $12-14 for two Fatayir.

Let me start by saying that the A1 hoummus is the best hoummus in Melbourne. No but's, no exceptions. Since moving to the north side of the city, A1 has become my go-to place. The counter service is brusque, sure, but the gents out back who restock the shelves and fridges are lovely as can be. The haloumi pie is amazing and well priced, and nothing beats getting to the bottom and sucking all the haloumi juice out. If you haven't been to A1, GO.

Following the good reviews & crowed I see in this place thought of checking it out. Had a chicken pizza with Garlic, Zatar pizza & taboule salad all of which was delicious and quite authentically Lebanese. Will definitely go back for more next time I’m on Sydney road
Rachael
Very nice joint to pop in for lunch. Outstanding value and great fresh breads. Also saw the server slip a homeless person a 10 dollar note which was nice. Service could be faster but the price is dynamite. Especially loved the halloumi cheese pie and the meat pie.

The A1 bakery is a family favourite. We always experience great service. Everything is made fresh to order and food is always served hot. Coffee is also very very good!

I really enjoy going to this bakery - fresh Lebanese bread and pizzas made on premises. The dough is soft and light and you can mix and match toppings. The place also does decent coffee and they have a small grocery area where you can purchase things like cheese and Lebanese dairy products, fresh bread, dates etc. They cook with oil so there's no risk of getting sick from hidden dairy in dips or butter inside the dough, which I found some other places do. Can get quite busy during lunch time but the dining area is quite spacious, so we've never had problems finding a seat.
Melbournecafereviewer77
I got a spinach and cheese pie for $3, so cheap and so fresh and tasty. The people in the shop were really lovely and welcoming. Will definitely be back :)
Tasteforyourbuds
Awesome food for the price !! Absolutely delicious !! Can’t complain!!! The Zatar with veggies is a must when visiting here !! Always coming back :)
Hanger Management
Can you really find fault with this place? So cheap, so yummy, great service. There are places you go for ambiance and dining experiences, and then there are places you go to when you're really hungry and want bang for your buck. And a bangin your buck shall have.

Our favourites are the sujuk pizza, zatar pizza, and the lamb. The chicken is underwhelming so we recommend avoiding it.
Jack Thompson
The best middle eastern eatery on Sydney Rd, no contest. The venue is always busy, amazing prices for authentic, homemade, Lebanese food. Best for when hungover. Spinach triangle and beef kafta are to die for.
Summer Rae
I would say that the breads here a pretty nice but after eating here several times I have felt a bit sick or "breaded out" as my mum likes to say. The baclava on the other hand was great!
Lolaraean9
This place has excellent breads for a cheap price! I would come here again. This place is family friendly and cheap. I would recommend the cheese bread.
Bec Gilmore
The guys here are so great and so is the food! We pulled in just as they were closing yet they were still willing to cook as a few pizzas and pour us a few drinks. They didn't even mind when our little ones were tramping around the place as they were packing up. Well done guys, one happy mumma here! PS we would drive from Mooroolbark to Brunswick everyday of the week for your Babaganoush :)

The falafel place we wanted to go to was closed BUT A1 turned out to be no second rate option.

The falafel warp was very tasty. Crispy falafel that were soft on the inside and certainly not too dry like some falafel can be.
The pickles went really well with everything too.

The wrap itself could have been heated a little more and the tahini was light on but, in the end I think that was good because it didn't go all soggy as you ate it.

The wrapping itself was also very good so it didn't completely fall apart as you ate it and I appreciate this as its a skill I can never quite grasp. This makes me realise what everyone means when they say that A1 is an institution and is definitely authentic, no frills food.

Overall, very decent for price and quality. The service is not amazing but I don't think you would really expect it to be, given the lay out of the place (which kind of has the feeling of a school camp dining hall) however it is quick and efficient.
Claudia L
I've spent years just ordering the pizzas and finally one day I decided on a chicken tawouk. I'm disappointed the I waited so long to try it because it was amazing. The place does look a bit outdated, but it's also part of the charm and the overall experience.
Luna Chyld
The food here is always amazing and usually amazing friendly service. Really unimpressed today though when ordering a decaf soy latte with a meal at the counter with the food, paying for it with a card, then lining up at the coffee area to find out they forgot the soy and needed us to break a $20 to pay the extra 50c Seriously!?! They make a mistake and then can't let 50c go to make up for it? This seems ridiculous.
George David Michaelides
Ordered a sujuck pizza here and whilst it was hot and fresh there was a lengthy 20minute wait for it. The taste wasn't quite there for me, the sausage had this odd aftertaste and I found it not up to the level of a zatar pizza or a tabets pizza.
Perseus Jackson
Me and my sister went to A1 bakery this afternoon and I have to say this bakery really made our whole day. Unlike what I have imagined, this bakery has a quite traditionally simple decoration with all the wooden tables and white lights. That is a super unique feature which I really like. The staff was extremely nice and friendly and the food was fast so you don't have to wait too long. Only 10 minutes for a hot fresh pizza is really impressive, isn't it? He recommended us the cheese pie and the sujuk pizza. The cheese pie was quite big and it should be shared for 2. You should also eat with your hands to fully experience the freshness of the pastry and the richness of cheese inside. The pizza (6 slices) was really tasty and the meat was somehow tasted interesting. The thing that I love most about the pizza is that the crust was so thin and crunchy that we didn't feel overwhelmed even though there was a lot of cheese in there. Overall, $11.50 for a meal of two is definitely worth paying for when coming to Brunswick.
Affogato Addiction
Classic Brunswick institution. Super tasty middle eastern bakery items. Cheap prices, simple decor. Grocery store also part of the bakery for your pantry staples.
New orders stop 15-20 min before closing but the is generally a few things made on the shelf to choose.
Lots of seating available.

If it wasn't cheap.... you get what you pay for here. This place has a following but not from discerning diners. Quick bites in a basic setting, friendly service.
Florina Wang
Got a chicken wrap and a sausage pizza for $20 all together. It was filling surprisingly! The wrap was very fresh and the pickles were very crunchy and flavoursome. Will definitely go back again if there's a chance.
James Bowers
Perfect food for what it is. The service can be bad, though. I have been there at least 50-60 times, and would say I've had my order forgotten at least 10 times. They are always super friendly about it, and it's a genuine mistake, but it can be annoying if you are on a schedule.
Jay Ruparel
Fresh, yummy, quick, cheap, clean. You cannot go wrong here! Also, saves your trip to the Middle East! Perfect place for a Sunday brunch and a takeaway as well!
Abhishek Mehra
Great food, very authentic. Lovely aromas and charming in a Lebanese way. I'm a frequent visitor and love the flavours and the prices are what bring most people back frequently. You can't go wrong with anything you try here. My only criticism would be that they have a tendency to mix up orders as they are so busy during most parts of the day especially lunch hour and early evening.
Hemi Rakei Reidy
I think everyone would probably write the same review here '10 cheese pies please' and your weekend is sorted! You can also slide down the back for some great dips, labne and buckets of halloumi.
Tammie Le
Devoured a stretch zaatar & enjoyed a latte to finish. Ahhh the simple things in life! As good as it use to be 13 years ago! Will be back soon! Thank you.

My go-to. Tasty, tasty tasty. We eat here at least once a week. Can be inconsistent - noticeably worse when they're busy, but tasty nonetheless!

Hands down the place to go on Sydney rd. We came here already 4 times and ate: Zataar, Spinach and Feta Triangle, Meat Pizza, Labne Pizza, Cheese Pie and the Shaklin Pie. Each of them were extremely tasty despite their semplicity. They obviously know what they are doing and the fact that they are always busy it should say something. Surely the bread is the king here but they also use fresh ingredients and a lovely combination of spices. It is cash only but most of the mentioned items swing from $1,50 to $5.00, so it's great value for money. A1 = Authenticity

More photos to come :)

I had the labne pizza with fresh tomato, cucumber, some amazing sauce thing, olives, mint, and drizzled in oil. I took one bite into that woodfired deliciousness ($5, mind you) and decided right then and there I shall never eat anywhere else in my life.
Gave it a rating of 4 for the semi long wait and the disinterested service- but yep, super tasty and incredible value for money!

I have no idea what the fuss is about this place. It's cheap and that's about all based on our visit.
The food tastes average (not bad but nothing special) and barely has anything in/on it. At the end I'm not even sure I ate anything. Way overrated.

It's been a while since I've been here and nothing much seems to have changed. Old school Lebanese bakery that everybody knows. Tasty and cheap.

Heard from my colleagues that A1 bakery has awesome pizzas. Went over there to check it out and I find that it is rather nostalgic and authentic looking. They bake the pizza in the traditional oven. I ordered one with lamb and cheese and it was delicious . The lebanese bread all looked so good and fresh. Great service from the server at the counter. Really affordable for the size. Fresh ingredients and fantastic pricing and excellent service.

Warning: Best to eat it there cos it is very juicy and the oil will drip from the pizza. It dripped all over me.

I can't get enough of their falafels. Falafel wrap.. Falafel platter. Falafel on its own. Being more falafels. Freshly made. Value for money. Friendly service. So glad they're my local.

A very spacious Lebanese eatery with lots of seaters. Food here is too affordable and you might just get a meal for 2 for a measly 10-15 dollars. Food is mostly fresh and enjoyable. The baklava is my favorite here. Must be given a try.

A go to spot for bargain Lebanese breads and pizzas. It's always busy but service is quick and efficient. Favourites are the cheese pizza and zatar with veggies, coffee is decent and you can get bread and dips to takeaway.

Coming from the south-east burbs, I am a bit spoiled for middle eastern foods. However, A1 is something else entirely. A generous, great value, family style eatery that treats its food and patrons with respect. Incredible tastes, friendly staff, and a brilliant authentic menu.

Their kofta (kafta) is the best I've ever had, and their tahini is delicious and light.

Very happy that I walked through their door.

I cannot think of anywhere else that serves fast and delicious food at such a mouth dropping price. The make everything fresh with speed and flavour. Every time I go there's a long queue, but I never waited for more than 5 minutes. To be honest, even if the line was 30 minutes I would still wait. Their zataar and pizzas are worth to die for.

Highly recommend to give it a try, whether it's dine or just a quick munchie on the go, I reassure you will not regret it. Even if you do (which I highly doubt), it's something that fills your belly with under $10!!

A place where you will leave with happy stomachs. Being a vegetarian myself, the several vegetarian options from the menu brought a smile to my face and yes, I love the falafel wrap!

I can't stop, somebody help me! The cheapest best foods ever. I can't stop having zaatar with fresh veggies and cheese pie and meat pizza. I never finish them but they are so cheap and tasty!! Also very fast!

We had the half and half platter and the chicken platter, and it was essentially great fresh and home-made food. The falafel was amazing, crunchy on the outside but not dry. Serving sizes were quite generous and prices are more than reasonable. Coffees were also good.

No one can compete with A1 bakery on Sydney rd, I Love the falafel platter and cheese manoush. They are very friendly, everything's fresh and delicious. Highly recommended this place.

Unbelievable A1 value. A visit to Sydney Rd isn't complete without a food stop at A1. Fast, fresh, cheap and tasty - it's a winning combination.

Our cheese and spinach pie and meat pizza cost a whole $7.50 - together. That's hardly more than they were 15 years ago when l first discovered A1. And just about the best value in all of Melbourne. Plus these yummy lunches were served hot in less than 5 minutes. The flavours are simple but distinctive and delicious.

The decor is dated but who cares when it's this good and this cheap. There are lots of tables and middle eastern groceries to take away too. There's another A1 in Dandenong and l love them both.

Nothing beats the original A1 bakery, great friendly and fast service. Perfect stop by for a quick lunch and on a budget. Everything is made fresh on order 👌👌

Cheap & amazingly good. Casual dinning simple food but amazingly tasty. Highly recommended but can get very busy. Nice for take away or simple dinning

Easy food. Lots of choices. Good prices and always fresh and delicious. Love the 50/50 platter. I go because it's consistent and local. Keep up the good work.

Can you still buy a pizza for $1.5?
Yes, at A1 you can.
Are they made from cardboard? You may ask.
Nope, they actually very tasty.

Welcome to A1 middle Eastern bakery, where you can get Labne pizza, platters of felafel, hommous and Shanklish, De-lish!
This is a frequent stop-in spot for me, today I've had the A1 Special pizza (zatar pizza with tomato, onion, olives and spinach, fetta and optional Turkish Sujuk) and the felafel platter.
The cheese pies (Haloumi cheese) is also excellent!

Heard about this place from quite a few different sources, so my prerogative is to following through with a little visit.
The food's very well priced, offering a cheap lunch, albeit, mainly bread based.
The Cheese Pie and Zaatar with Veggies were a good value purchase but the Meat Pie was unpalatable.
I had a few bites, but just couldn't stomach the mincemeat filling. It was nearly on the steak tartare level.
Aside from that, my experience with A1 has been mediocre.

Absoulty love A1 bakery. Have ordered catering from this place twice now because there savoury pastries are to die for especially the cheese and spinach triangles and vegetarian pizzas. The food is always fresh and melts in your mouth as it is always freshly made to deliver. A1 also do a delicious strong brew and I would highly recommend using there catering service as the staff are friendly the food is fresh, hot and cheap.

Ordered a dozen falafel from here, waited ages for them then when we got them they where really oily, i bit into it and they where completely raw in the middle, i recognised the taste because i usually buy the $3.00 falafel mix that they sell on the shelves, the one that you just add water to, they had used that to make the falafel...we should have just bought the dry packet mix, it was the exact same thing but one third of the price we paid...i had to get home and recook them too because they where raw...what a time waster...next time I'll go to zataar down the road.

Worth the visit and I wasn't let down after being recommend to come here by a few friends. Great variety on the menu and very cheap. The bread in particular was the highlight and the meat was fairly good. Can't wait to come back and try more items on the menu

A1绝对是猫本性价比最好的中东菜之一。
选择多,味道好,价格低,低到你没话话,15块钱可以把两个人吃饱吃满足了那种。
推荐spinach & cheese triangles。

At this price I couldn’t expect more.

I am convinced you DO NOT get a better bakery than this!! Pure professionalism and customer service is just beyond expectation. My girlfriend & I were in the area and popped in before heading home. Our planned 5min pop in quickly turned into a 20-30min wait. Understandable and easily forgiven with the Sunday afternoon rush. We then made the kitchen staff aware of the slight mix up and order we've placed. They were so apologetic and insisted we grab complementary sweets or drinks. We obviously refused as mistakes like these are easy to make in such environments. The very second our order was read, the two staff members behind the kitchen counter packed in the warmest spanish/ricotta triangles and baklava for the road:) I REFUSE to just walk on pass this store when in the area. The BEST!!

P.S try the spanish/ricotta triangle!
