Review The Union Hotel - Brunswick

Michael Tee
Great local pub. Solid beer list, and a menu of pub classics plus some surprises- all done well. Getting served a couple of slices of white bread and a tiny butter packet before a meal is always a winner for me. Also, easily the best salt and pepper shakers I've seen in a while...

This was a 5 star burger. Just the perfect pub burger and chips. Went down well with a pot of amber juice. Freekin delicious. I lay awake at night and wonder if I'll ever feel that way about a burger again. 🍔 at least we had that one brief but incredible time together. I'll never forget you union burger. ❤

I was a little disappointed. I was really looking forward to seeing my mum for lunch. I was told that the pub had been given a new look and feel and that the food was great. I arrived ahead of my mum and asked to start a tab. That's where my encounter with the barmaid made me realize that I had probably come to the wrong place. Usually buying a jug would be cheaper than buying a pint at a time, but there, NO. When I queried why, I was told that she had worked all over Melbourne and it is the same everywhere, which is rubbish. I have had $3 cheaper and even $5 during Happy Hour. So strike 1. Once I had poured myself a beer and had a few mouthfuls, I asked for the menu. She gave me a very weird look, lifted her right arm while still looking at me strangely and pointed at the end of the bar. All of a sudden she leaned over a little and said that they are over there and walked off to serve another customer. Strike 2. My mum arrives and we go to a booth to sit down and look at the menu. The inflated prices jumped out at us right away. We didn't have a lot of time so we decided to take a chance. There was a waiter bringing food out to other patrons. When we tried to get his attention he directed me to the bar. To save time, I went up and asked why he wouldn't take our order. I was told that they don't do table service. I asked "if you bring food out then why not take an order into the chef?" I was answered very directly and a little abruptly by saying "this is a pub not a 5 star resaurant." Stike 3. To say the least, I was not happy about her response. I went back to the table and said to my mum that we should leave. She said that we will see it through. I went back to order. Our order came out in a timely manner and was well presented. It was really good. Both meals were delicious. The only problem was that there were no condiments, salt and pepper or a steak knife for my steak on the table. We got the impression that the person we thought was the waiter was more likely a kitchen hand. So, I had to go and ask for them. Despite the food being delicious, our overall experience was terrible. We tried it, but won't go back. I gave 2 stars for the chef's great job. End of review. 🤨

Always enjoy The Union, amazing live music, excellent food and fantastic staff.
Caspar Roxburgh
One of the last great homely and pretentious-free pubs serving great food, good beers and with lovely staff. I've been loving this pub since 2015 and it consistently delivers.
Scott Gowans
Still great pub meals, held up well post covid. Consistent and tasty, with occasional brilliant specials.
Terry Finch
Really good local with friendly staff and a good beer, wine and food selection.
Charles Hardy
A great relaxed vibe in an old school pub atmosphere with friendly, groovy/alternative bar staff. There’s an outdoor area with covered tables. We had lunch of oven roasted trout which was delicious.

I am from Tasmania over on a holiday call in Thursday night to catch up with my cousins that used to live in Dawson St 40 years ago was a beautiful meal and the staff are lovely, I highly recommend if in the area grab a meal

The pub was jumping with the music from Dan Warner and his select band. The choice of beers was excellent and all served with chilled glasses. The menu was very good and the prices were extremely good with the size of the meals that kept coming out. The hotel is well set up for the locals and for visitors, a large beer garden where the kids can run around , a dining room for a conversation and of course the main bar where the band can be loud and the crowd sing along. cheers and I will be back!
Jenny McLeod
I love to go to the Union to hear the excellent and varied bands that play there, but I've been reminded again and agian to not order food there, unless you're prepared to wait an hour to recieve it. If you ask where your order is you won't be given an apology or thanks for waiting so long. You'll be told that orders with kids serves will be done first, and that the wait is about 45 minutes. It's just not good enough. So go for the music, but not for a meal.
Thomas Wright
The worst pub I've been to! Sarcastic staff with awful attitude. The food was awful and the staff were worse. I will not be coming back.
Paul Jackson
Great atmosphere, food, beer & wine. We were there on a busy Sunday night & found the service friendly and attentive; we waited about 20 minutes for our food.
Rod MacGregor
Had a great New Year's Eve at the Union, absolutely brilliant night, food and music were fantastic, recommend highly.
John Rose
We went to Liam Gerner and the Sunset Preachers - a great band with really well written songs, but were pleasantly surprised by the quality of the meals we had and the relaxed vibe - a good place to see music on a Sunday afternoon.
Donna Cully
Great pub grub with added influence from an understanding chef . Wait staff fabulous. Rib eye recommended
Bruno Lettieri
Wonderful music and a great comfortable booth from which to watch it all and all for free. A memorable afternoon and I would go again and again.
Greg Eden
Reasonably priced good pub food and free music.
Damian Gordon
Love this joint - killer good and bev and a great great room for band acoustics
Jacob Nico
Brilliant Australian pub with live music. I strongly recommend.
Leong CL
Good food, great vibe with the best steak in town!

Cute place, We had the fish of the day which was made well and was delicious with a salad , flavourful. The halloumi salad with beetroot was also quite nice, could have used less walnuts and more dressing on it however. The union platter to share was excellent. My only complain would be the service, slow and quite unattentive. We cleaned off our own table twice. we had entree, main and desert and each part took quite a while to come.
The flourless chocolate cake was also amazing, fresh and warm. Would have been excellent with ice cream instead of cream though.
Little Pink Piggy
Was here for a Sunday sesh with my partner. Way too many kids running around to make it a truly fun session. We ordered the stake sandwich and the enchiladas. Food was exactly what I'd expect of a pub meal. Good but not great. Loved the live music.
Rosie Raiti
Being on a health kick , very happy to find Minestrone soup with lentils and a poached egg on the specials menu today, the smell of the soup was amazing and the soup delicious, topped off with Apple cider, perfect for a quick work lunch.
TweeVy Ngo
Decent sized meals for price. Love their beer battered chips and pita bread and dips. The rib eye was massive, it does lack steak sauce and can be quite chewy to eat. Cheap drinks by the bar. Recommended for some casual drinks and pub meal.

I eat here a bit with friends but last night was the worst service I’ve ever encountered. A 50 minute wait for our meals whilst watching meals delivered to several other tables who arrived much later than we did was just unacceptable. Tarnished my previously high opinion of this Hotel. Felt forgotten....
Elsiej999
The steak is great, the beers are cold, the staff are friendly and the live music is awesome. What more could you want?
One of the best pubs this side of the city!

This place always struck me as a bit dodgy looking but in reality no dodgier looking than any old pub. Inside it was pretty stock standard old pub, quite weathered but certainly friendly and warm. The service seemed fine and it was a freezing night yet the beer garden had good heating, we were extremely comfortable eating outside - but the negative is I really feel the food is over priced. My dish sounded hearty, I was excited, but when it came out they had gone with the "modern Australian" tiny portions thing you might find at an up market restaurant. Look the food did not taste bad, but I had to come home and snack, I was in no way full. I just felt it was reaching to be a dining experience it just isn't. I say just be a comfy daggy pub and offer good pub grub for hungry drinkers at decent prices. Trying to be fancy when the workmanship is not quite there and the surrounds are old and shabby just didn't work for me and I'll doubt I'll be back to dine. I'll probably be back for a couple of wines though. Also GF options were abysmal - pretty bad for Brunswick the GF mecca of Melbourne. Another big negative, desserts had sold out. I thought that was really weird.
Just Feed Me
I love everything about this pub. Old school charm, fantastic beer garden, small and delicious menu, good priced drinks, funky Sundays cool staff.
Master
We ordered the Tasting Plate and the staff member who delivered it put the plate down with a shove and half the food ended up on the table, he then scooped the food up with his hands, put it back on the plate and left. There was no offer to 're-do' the soiled food or attempt at righting his disgusting error. Yuck, yuck, yuck!
Parmasofmelbourne
Keeping it local once again , this week we went down to The Union Hotel in Brunswick. Walking in this pub had an old school vibe . We felt good about this one. We ordered and sat down in the bar area.
We waited
And waited
And waited...........
It hit the one hour mark and no parmas had hit the table. We were confused because this place was not busy at all. We approached the bartender to ask where our parmas were. He panicked and came back to our table 5 minutes later to tell us "they are on the way". About 5 minutes later they hit the table . No apology at all, no compensation. It had looked like the waiter had stuffed up but we are not sure why the wait was so long . The night wasn't off to a good start.
The chicken breast was good , but this one was as soggy as they come. It was almost like they chucked these things in the microwave.
This Parma was an absolute mess on the plate.
The Napoli was quite nice and tasty.
The ham didn't really play its part but was there for the most of it.
The cheese had quite a wierd texture. It was very slimy and soggy.
The chips were awesome. Very old school pub like.
The salad was ok. Some dressing was well needed.
All in all this was a terrible experience. Waiting over an hour for 4 parmas is by no means acceptable, especially when it wasn't great. We don't like giving pubs a bad name but the customer service in this place is almost non existent. A "hey sorry fellas about the wait" doesn't go a stray. We received no apology and we left un satisfied and unhappy. We definitely won't be returning
5.5/10

The Union Hotel was the chosen location for a casual girls, post work dinner where the chatter comes first closely followed by decent and simple food. It's a popular place and there became increasingly busy over the course of the evening so it's clearly well liked. The menu has all the pub classics as well as a handful of more creative offerings on the specials board. We pretty much went classic bar the 12 hour braised lamb ribs which were paired with the slightly more unusual broccolini and sweetcorn puree. Flavours were good, the lamb was tender and the fat rendered out so not greasy. I liked the crunchy freshness of the broccolini and the sweetness of the corn with a tang of mint sauce although the puree was a bit coarse and grainy. Didn't hold me back from eating it all though!
Bianca Roberts
Really decent local. All the expected pub fare with a great vibrant ambience and entertainment, whether you be here to sit back with a drink and watch the footy or enjoy a live gig. Beware that there is a 50c surcharge on card transactions.
Bunjibing
This place used to be a rough old school pub with weekday stripper nights. It now attracts all sorts and is lovely. The decor is daggy and inviting. Like grandma's house but with a massive front bar, loads of hipster grand kids and ageing aunts and uncles.

Been here a couple of Friday nights now because Bing junior's sweet school friend insisted on 'dinner at the pub' with us. Cute. It's been packed each time.

Had the Thai chicken salad the first time. It had way too many leaves and not enough spice. Last night I had fish and chips and it was generous and tasty, served with fresh salad and crispy chips.

Prices are a little steep but they have a specials board and extensive drinks list. There's seating out the front and a beer garden out the back which I expect would be nice in the warmer months (though another review mentioned smoking is allowed).

I reckon there's something for everyone here.
Mr. Sasquatch
Went to the Union for the first time on a Tuesday night for dinner - big tick. Food was good, we had pub grub - bangers & mash and eggplant parmigiana (huuge). The place is itself was the standout: good old neighbourhood pub in a quiet back street, relaxed feel, cosy dining room and beer garden. All the tables in the front bar were reserved which we soon discovered was for trivia night. Staff were friendly and unpretentious - always welcome these days in Brunswick. Definitely will be back - our new favourite neighbourhood pub though we still like the Edinburgh Castle and the Terminus.
Zara Mitchell
We pop into The Union when we can for a sneaky afternoon beer in the back garden or a pub mean. The specials are too rave about and we normally order from the board. Love going here for dinner
Creanimate
I have lived in Union street for years and really wish this was a better pub than it is. Prices are a little steep and there is a 50 cent surcharge on eftpos transactions however its a beautiful pub with a nice low key vibe. What I find really disappointing is that they allow smoking in the small, semi-enclosed beer garden out the back. Personally I don't mind if they allow smoking out the front but seriously it's 2016 and it shouldn't be a luxury to enjoy a smoke free beer garden.
TheHappiestHour
The Union, out in the wilderness of Brunswick West (will be 2014’s new IT suburb we bet), is the quintessential local pub. Revelers have pints of craft beer on the footpath tables, just in front of
Parma Daze
the home made schnitzel has an amazing herb encrusted crumbing that is rather tasty, so much so I didn’t quite mind the shortage of napoli and cheese (although full coverage would have been nice)
Tabithaziino
Not very Gluten Free friendly. Not many GF options and unfortunately the staff were not very willing to help with gluten free options. Choice of quinoa salad, steak or fish (grilled) and chips without the batter.. Got the fish and chips and it wasn't fantastic. Great little pub and brilliant atmosphere but options for me were a bit disappointing.
Joel
Loco for my local. Great Chips, Burgers and enchiladas. Free bread to kick off your main. I wouldn't say I've had one bad meal here and that's coming from someone that comes here at least once a week.
Staff really friendly
Great variety of beer on tap.
Keep up the good work.
Irenebyrd
Want to wait an hour for overpriced, lukewarm, soggy food?. I am not sure if they have a new cook, but the food has definitely gone downhill. Ordered the burger, which should be hard to stuff up, but somehow they managed. Avoid.
Rottenbeauty
Disappointing!. My family went to the Union Hotel for my Dad's birthday. What a mistake! I had the fish of the day which turned out to be slimy, undercooked salmon with the blandest quinoa salad I've ever had. My daughter had a boring penne and my husband's burger included a burnt roll. Poor Dad ended up with a tasteless linguine.

The Union has never had great service, but if the food was great I might be able to overlook the attitude and long wait for meals. I wish the Union was the friendly local it should be, but unfortunately it's an overpriced joint with below par meals and staff who are often rude and unwelcoming. At least the staff were pretty nice tonight.

Won't be back in a hurry.
Lucyjbughes
Bad bad bad. Very excited about eating at the union. Heard great things. Ordered three meals. We recieved two meals within thirty minutes, although not together. Our third meal never arrived. They insited it was still coming after one hour. Their solution was a takeaway meal after we enquired several times. The manager was not forthcoming with solutions to rectify the situation. Only after we asked for a refund did he obliged and $ 20 was thrown on the table. Not impressed with the service and handling of our customer experience.
Sarah Maunder
Don't go on a Friday night, unless you want to wait an hour for cold food!
Guy
A little Brunswick gem which gets it so right by attention to the simple little things. Unpretentious pub menu with all the old faves done simply and well. Laid back and friendly atmosphere (is there a no-dickheads policy?), gorgeous beer garden and great tap beer list for lovers of craft beer. Not rocket science to get the basics right, and they do it well.
Joe Citizen
What happened??. Union hotel, previously an amazing food pub, now a venue with a stodgy, bland and overpriced menu. We had the antipasto platter the other night, looked like they had bought all of the ingredients from coles, and the salami had a strange smell. Have also eaten the burrito and pesto pasta and been similarly disappointed. If you're going to compete in this neighbourhood now you need to lift your food game. Still a great venue for a cider and chips but that's about it.
MissD
Inconsistent. Been here many times and love this local gem. Other night we started off the zucchini dumplings. So delicious. Then I had a fabulous steak sandwich. Ut was juicy and tender and very generous, just what yiu need on a cold winter night. My 2 buddies both had tge enchiladas. Both complained it was dry and flavouless. Shame.....not sure I will convince them to return
K.A.S.
I like this place for the casual atmosphere and nice pub food, bands are great too. On weekends I like it when I see loads of young families which is nice too, a very relaxing place.
This place would be perfect, if it only wasn't for the smokers taking over the front entrance and the amazing beer garden!
Phoebe Fairman
I don't like this pub
Thefooddestroyer
Perfect local!. Great local pub. Consistently good food, great atmosphere, cracking beer garden & live music. A real winner!!
Fazzamum
Found the service great and the beer garden the perfect space for a catch up with friends but my chicken burger (special) was really horrible. Overdone no salad - my daughters chicken was also burnt. Don't come for the food!
Rosemary1803
Don't Bother. Service was condescending; food pretentious and overpriced; wine list and beers expensive and limited.

Save your money and go elsewhere.
Tari
Our Local is ruined - Whats's going on?????. Been my local for years. Always consistent. But - tonight it was terrible. Told when we ordered that it would be 45 mins for meals. They took 1 hr 10 mins!!!!! Two ordered the Filet Mignon ($32) - later told it was unavailable and "would it be OK for eye fillet". We said Yes but when the meals came, it wasn't that eye fillet had replaced the filet mignon - it was the eye fillet meal with roasted (????) beetroot. Steaks were well done (grey and solid) when we had asked for 'medium'. The $22 Fish and chips was 2 tiny thin slivers of fish on some soggy cool chips and soggy salad. The chicken parma didn't have Napoli Sce - just some dry tomato paste - and the soggy chips. They saw me take a pic of the fish n chips - and suddenly were interested in us. Refunded the money for the F n C. Bought us a free drink. BUT - that's it - never going back. Has ruined our 'local'. The owners need to step in and see what's going on. It has gone from super reliable, to "avoid at all cost" What a shame - I am sad about it.
Simon Walter
Disappointing. It took an hour for our 2 steaks to arrive. They got our sides wrong and the steaks were dry and tough. For $30 per steak, this is very disappointing.
Melbournespazz
Magic. Wife had the freshly battered fish n chips, you could tell it was with fresh seafood. Soooo good.
I think i had one of the best Chicken Parma's in my life.
Definitely keep coming back. New chef has got it right!! Awesome
Charlie
Best beer garden, good place for an afternoon drink with friends (nice wine list) good pub food
CoutureChef
Great local pub, food is good and prompt, live bands are good and perfect beer garden out the back for a hot day, hidden gem full of locals
Micky D
Go elsewhere. No. Just no.

I've been going to The Union for meals for years but the new chef is terrible. We waited for close to 2.5 hours for our meals, the meals have halved in size but tripled the amount of iceberg lettuce. Everything was flavourless except for the foods that were full of cinnamon where pepper should have been.

There are too many better pubs in the area with better food, better service and better staff to bother with this place anymore.
Lisa
Rude Staff.. Rude bar staff deliberately didn't make eye contact when waiting at the bar. Will not be be back! No excuse for such poor service.
Love It Or Like It
Loved our visit Good Aussie pub Meals reasonable price Food delicious lots of varied seating and lively music Staff pleasant and accomadating Ill be back ! and have told lots of people
Pau
Brunswick quality - The Union has it wrapped. A wonderful gem, located in a sleepy part of central Brunswick.

Ticks all boxes.

... Awesome food, boutique beers on tap, great selection of quality wines by the glass or bottle, awesome staff and great atmosphere, a lovely touch of slightly polished rustic warmth of community buzzing ... 'quietly' .... shhhhsh .... its a keeper ... thank you all at THE UNION ... consistently " LOVE YOUR WORK " !!

PS How good are those zucchini fritters !
Hula Jarmusch
A Great Melbourne pub. Meals are consistently solid! Can't go wrong.
Alabama
Parma tasted like old used oil....gross wont come back
Christine Miller
Bad service and really rude staff.... 1st time here.... Won't be back!
Losers!
Kjaj
Great pub (my local I must admit) but always welcoming. Menu could do with a refresh but good food nonetheless
Ash
Extremely poor attitude from the bar staff. Wont be back.
Sylvia The Cat
Usually like this pub but tonight it was very ordinary. Food took just on an hour. I think it had probably been sitting there for a while. My steak sandwich was cold, the cheese not melted etc. the other meal was also cold. Very disappointing.
Peter Walter
Returned to Melbourne after 6 months and came straight to Union to have our used to be regular chicken Parma. The quality of it have gone down tremendously and it was all burnt underneath . Very disappointed!!
Michael
I love this place! Great relaxing pub with tremendous service. A regular haunt of mine now
Biscuits
Food good, waiting staff ok! But A nice smiley welcome especially for returning brunswickers isn't too much to ask from the bar staff ??!!!! Bordering on arrogant I think !!! And change the live band music pleeeeease and we promise to stay for more beers!!!
GregT
The parmas here are pretty good. I always thought this place would be a dive, but have been thoroughly impressed.
Pub Pig
Once again a perfectly cooked steak. Absolutely delicious. My friends also really enjoyed their meals. All were well presented and prepared. We will keep coming back! Compliments to the chef!!! :D
Donna Marie Stonecutter
Best pub ever.
Noodle Dream
Nice casual dining. We keep coming back for a casual weekend meal. Love the heated outdoor area and food is consistently good. The chilli bean enchiladas are the best thing on the menu.

Parma crust is amazing, but I'd prefer just the shnitzel without the cheese & sauce.

Good variety of brews as well. Fairly standard pub prices.
Casey Waters
Great food!. Enjoyed a few quality beers, and the extremely well cooked steak sandwich. Found it a bit strange that the undercover outside area allowed smokers, even though there was a big open area that also allowed smoking.
Nicolas Bertin
Standard food, overpriced. Nothing out of the ordinary for this pub, it's pub food, but with no soul, overcooked steaks, pricy burgers and parmas (around 20 $) with regular ketchup... May be enough for someone living in the neighborhood, but it's not worth the trip if you don't live there. It's not bad, it's just boring.
Hungry_Bear
Never again. They bought out the wrong order and their attitude was rude. We had to have meals we didn't order. Steak was over cooked, potatoes and chips were cold. Meals all came out at different times - one of the meals wasn't even cooked.
JP
Amazing Parmas, bar staff are so rude and well below the professional standard. Have been going there near on 2 years and everytime I go they are always the same, snobby little girls who think they Are better than you. Only reason to go back is the AMAZING FOOD.
Dani
Terrific. Great atmosphere, Good pub dining & service - will definitley be back
RayCharles
Great old style pub. Food was great. Pity about the attitude from the bar staff. Rude and arrogant.
Miss K
Love this place! Been twice, food has been great. Nice old-school pub (no pokies) with cute beer garden at the back. Reasonably priced too and close to train station. Deep fried zucchini fritters are my favorite.
Ben Palmer
Good beer and great food, the union appears laid back and casual, but it gets it effortlessly right, the attention to detail is there, and it shines though. Food is consistently good, and special change regularly to keep things interesting. Sunday's have free live music on a small stage, it can get quite busy so allow extra time for food and the bar.
Felice Jacka
This is our local and it's a great one. Steak is always good and the specials are often really good. But we mainly go for the friendly, relaxed atmosphere and the great beer garden
Urbanoutcast
I love the beer garden here. The food is pretty good, but definitely try the specials board instead of the "normal" menu -- it's usually heaps better.

They often have roo, duck, and sometimes quail or goat, if you're interested in trying something different!
Liam Pooleson
The food's good, not too expensive. Good atmosphere and the staff are great. Good for a summer meal, even on a weekend when it's busy.
Troy A
Good Beer Garden. This place has a great beer garden. The food is decent for the price. Nothing to rave about but will definitely go back.
Paul Melbourne
Don't order the Pie. Have been here a few times...all the staples are great...Burger, steak, parma's etc.

After finally taking my wife there for the first time...She ordered the Pie of the day. One Word....

DISGUSTING...a 4 and 20 pie taste's better. This really was rank...the filling tasted like it came out of can, the pastry...the worst I have ever had. To top it all off...cooked in a microwave - so nice and soggy...YUK.

Despite all this will be back as everything prior great...especially the burger....But Please....

DON'T GO NEAR THE PIE.
Natalie Edwards
Give it another go. I think I just had the worst pie ever...Chunks of bland dry beef encased in cardboard. It smelled like burnt butter, Fortunately I had some of my husbands burger which was not bad at all. Happy to try something else next time, nice atmosphere.
Brickworks Girl
Great place for a relaxing pub meal. I am so lucky that this pub is walking distance from my house. Warm, friendly atmosphere with really good food. Great place to go with family - my 82 year old Dad loves it, as does my 19 year old daughter.
Deidre
Once again great food, always come with the intention of eating off the menu but the specials get me every time. Glad this is my local.
Boilinghotfrog
Union Hotel. Had a lunch at the Union on a Sunday. Food was great and so are the staff. I had the steak sandwich - which was pretty good (caramelized onion and Swiss cheese -- nice). The only prob is we got there at 1pm (opens at 12?) and the fire hadn't been lit - so some of us were a little cold. By two things had really warmed up with a fantastic dessert consisting of a hot choc brownie and vanilla ice cream.
Dianne Arstall
Lil' treasure. Great little pub awesome atmosphere on a Friday night and wonderful old charm during lunch hour - many old locals. Highly recommend the steak sanga
Gavin Haak
Great local!. Having had dinner here twice, can thoroughly recommend for a hearty meal. Beer options are great also.

Keep an eye out for the Mussel's special, fantastic!

Quality food at very affordable prices.
Chefdansk
Lovely Night. Went for lunch sunday at the Union Hotel with my boyfriend and his parents. And that was just great. We had the Salt and Pepper Calamari, Beef Burger, Chicken Pie and King Quail. And everything was just perfect.
We came back again for dinner Monday (Kingfish, Pork Chop, Chicken Pie and chili bean enchiladas) and the same again just great, good t know it's just around the corner from us. Will defiantly come back again soon, very soon. Thanks.
Sally Fisher
Sad night at Union. What a disappointment. This was our local...until Wednesday night. This pub's kitchen cannnot keep pace with demand, no fault of the chef (unless he/she is the owner) - and it's been getting worse in recent months. If you are charging high prices for fancy pants meals in a pub they better be bloody good and better come to the table within 20-30mins - not over an hour, or one hour ten to be exact (we ordered at 6.30). And even then there were burnt pieces of food on the plate. Hopefully it was just one bad night.
Michael Smolders
Had a perfectly cooked rib eye fillet as part of their Monday night $12 special. Amazing value for a well cooked steak.
Super
Good local pub for a good local laugh.....
live music is something to behold. try the salmon.....
Hungryhippo
Another in the top echelon. Of melb pubs. classic pub grub, hard to go wrong (never have), plenty of dining space & large courtyard. heck, i'm not even reviewing a particular visi... just that i reviewed my other fav pub and thought these guys should get a mention too!
Peter Goodman
Mmmmm its O......K....... Really this is just solid pub grub served Brunswick style... ie with a friendly smile and courtesy that makes you want to come back.... but maybe not just for the food.

Sorry to sound harsh but after so many rosey recomedations I was expecting more.

Cold Beer. Friendly Staff. OK Food, not 'great'.
Loco
How did I not know about this place?!!!. What an awesome pub! We went there on Thursday night for some drinks - it was packed and there was a bluesy-type band playing inside so we sat outside, we were told the wait for food would be around 45 minutes and were given complimentary sourdough as soon as we sat down. The lighting was dim and the music was classic 90s (even heard some def fx later on!) and then the food arrived.... and it was well worth the wait! I had the enchiladas (you can ask for the vegan option without sour cream) and had a taste of the other meals on the table including the zucchini fritters, lamb backstrap (SOOOOO good) and their famous homemade ice cream and brownie for dessert.

Such a great atmosphere, and you won't find a better bunch of people working at a bar... zero attitude, happy and adorable, even when they're completely flat out they manage to bust out a joke.

I think we just found our new hideaway
Callum
Great Pub. Went here for the first time in a few weeks ago. Great food and cosy atmosphere. I'm looking forward to the beer garden in summer.
PS: the google map is about 500m off
http://maps.google.com.au/maps?hl=en&biw=1259&bih=809&q=urbanspoon%2CBrunswick&um=1&ie=UTF-8&sa=N&tab=wl

Great service, good food (pasta rates a special mention), great atmosphere. One of the best pubs in brunswick!
