Review Peds Thai Cuisine - Camberwell

Angie Bee
This is somewhere I've always wanted to revisit. My first time here was years and years ago, and somehow just had my sights set on revisiting last night. I don't think the decor or anything has changed since that first visit, as it was stuck somewhere between the 70s-90s. With that said, the service was reasonably good. There were only a few people in the restaurant at the time we got there, yet somehow, all tables got their meals out of order. The people ordering their meals just a half minute before us, got their entree 15 minutes before ours came out, but we got our mains before them. The food was quite good. I had the curry puffs and the chicken fried rice and all of mine was tasty. My friends both said their sauces were quite salty, and apparently the cashews were soft and mushy. The other hiccup was nicely resolved though - whereby two soft drinks were definitely out of date, so the lady offered to take them back and gave them a bottle of sparkling water at no charge. It's a very nice casual meal here. I think with so many other choices in Melbourne, there's no need to rush back again, but if anyone in the area asked me where I'd suggest they eat, I'd definitely recommend it.

Great Thai restaurant in Camberwell. Must be a local favourite as the place was busy. Tasty selection of Thai dishes. Loved the prawns. Desserts were delicious. Staff were helpful and pleasant. BYO wine was also a bonus.

Food are nice and tasty. Big portion and good service.

Really disappointing- lost it's charm. Trinitas used to offer a combination of traditional, fusion and modern Thai food. It was fresh, tasty and interesting. Not any more. Meal tonight was uninspiring the most mediocre of Thai food. BQQ pork and vegetables was stir fried low quality pork. The chicken and cashew stir fry used a battered chicken and tasted similar to the pork dish. Decor has been updated and was bright in an unattractive way. Food was overpriced and we were charged $2 for takeaway containers without being advised. Service was just OK. I'd be surprised if the chef had any real experience in cooking Thai food. Trinitas used to be a great place for Thai food. Now there are much better options.

If I could give no stars, I would. As per the review below, Trinitas Thai used to offer great meals. Spicy, authentic, flavoursome food. However, my take away last Friday night was NONE of those. The tom yum soup was completely flavourless, the "salad" to accompany my fish was nothing but onions and the beef was simple Chinese flavours. It was no where near Thai food and actually I couldn't place it in any cuisine to be honest. I spent $75 and threw most of the food out. I hate to be so scathing, but people need to be aware so they don't waste their money like I did.

Trinitas used to be best quality Thai restaurant in the area with prices to match. Got take away recently (in covid) and it appeared to have changed hands and the food was the poorest quality I have had in a long time. Tasteless and not the complex flavours I was expecting from the past. Prices still seem high and don't match the quality of the food.

This place used to have great food. Punchy spice packed with flavour. Now it’s some of the worst Thai food I have had. Really unfortunate to see what was once a great restaurant lower it’s colours so dramatically.

This place was a favourite of ours however, it looks as though they have recently had a change of ownership. Bitterly disappointed with the new restaurant. The staff were nice, however the food is nothing like it used to be. If only we could find where the old chefs have gone, we would happily drive hours to eat and enjoy. Waiting over one hour for a standard lunch meal isnt the best way to keep your customers.

The massman curry was a bit too watery due to too much coconut milk , the serving size for takeaway was majority rice
I liked the pad Thai tho, but still a lot of noodles
Anne
Disappointing with the serving size for the cost. The mixed veggie salad was very disappointing. Such a tiny portion for the price we paid. Same with the other dishes we ordered. We mentioned our disappointment to the owner and hopefully it will be addressed.

We ordered Thai pineapple fried rice, prawn salad and thai red curry. All dishes were beautifully-presented and delicious although they were not completely authentic. The staff and service here are another bigger bonus. So fast and lovely friendly staff. The setting is beautiful and cozy too!

Tried this restaurant on a couple of recommendations and it lived up to expectations. Staff were friendly and food was tasty. Nice casual atmosphere. Will definitely be returning.

So this was a surprise in the suburbs. Nice little Thai place with beautiful flavours. For a Thai experience I would recommend it. The attached photo is the dessert...

This is the best Thai restaurant I have been to in the last few years. The service was very friendly and the food was delicious and filling. I will be back

We love this place.

Perhaps slightly pricier than other Thai restaurants but the food is consistently great, the ambiance authentic and owner Sue is one of the loveliest hosts we’ve met - sorting out vegan requests and keeping my young nephews happy without any semblance of fuss.

Thanks guys

Ordered a quick take away from Ped's Thai near the corner of Toorak & Warragul Roads in Camberwell. Ordering was a quick process and wait time about 10 minutes. Not much of a crowd inside when we arrived but amazing what a difference 10 minutes can make as by 7:30 there were 5 additional groups of diners.

We ordered BBQ chicken, Green Curry Chicken (slightly brown), vegetarian curry puffs and rice.

The curry puffs were evil and flakey delicious and the chicken curry mild with a lovely coconut flavour. If anything perhaps a little too much liquid in the liquid to chicken ratio but I'm being pedantic here.

Good to know this place is only a short drive away.
Alex
Very overpriced food. Dishes costing $20+ for not special at all thai. The wait staff were nice though, which does bump up the score. The interior is quite authentic. The chicken in the curry bought had a lot of dark meat on it, not very impressed by the overall meals.

Great food with nice presentation. Nice ambience and quite reasonably priced menu for what you get. Owner and the staff are also friendly. Will come back for more.

We ordered a few dishes to share. The ‘Pad Thai Noodles with Prawns – stir-fried rice noodles with egg, bean curd and ground roasted cashew nuts with tamarind sauce, wrapped in an egg net ($20.00)’. The dish was beautifully presented with the egg net crowning the noodles. The option to make it spicier with a side of dried chilli was a pleasant surprise.

Just a bit more grunt needed .... keep it authentic Ped.

The restaurant looks unassuming from the outside, not a fan but was attracted to those bright coloured bulbs :-) however Ped the owner is a familiar face in the Thai food scene ..... this would be his third or fourth ventures in the South Eastern burbs.

Food wise, all are very well presented, great portion; Crispy Pork Belly and Chinese Broccoli needs a bit more grunt, don't be shy on the intensity and even more chilli please ..... while their Massaman Beef Curry comes in CHUNKS rather than diced meat, which should be followed by other Thai restaurant. It's tender, melts and just right, again the curry sauce needs mote grunt.

All very reasonably priced, $22 for those mains, service was slower but pleasant nonetheless.

BYO is even better .... enjoyable, will come back for more, kop khun krap, JT - 06/06/2017

We keep going back, so Ped must be doing it right. Always a great welcome, and his self-styled " authentic modern street food" is a revelation. Not much more to be said. Just sample it for yourselves.

No. of Visits: 3
I would just come here for the carrot flower sides next to the prawn twitter LOL (no joke!)

The shop interior reminds you the resort-ish feeling of any hospitality place in Thailand. I will give a 3.8 for the food only, yet with the plating of food Ped's Thai really worth a 4.5 score.

For such a small place, services are consistently attentive and detailed. Your water gets refill straight away. Your dishes always set in front of the right person. I value consistency more than anything as you know you are returning to the same service standard, with the same taste and expectation every time.

We were welcomed into the restaurant by Ped himself, a very friendly and chatty gentleman. He was happy to answer any questions we have about the menu, and after some discussion we decided on Tod Mon Pla (Thai fish cakes), to be followed by Gang Massaman (stewed beef curry) with roti, and Yum Ped Krob (duck salad). We enjoyed all of them.

Ped’s Thai has a home-style feel to it, both in service and food – in a good way! We would be happy to return any time for a quick meal for two or an inexpensive feast with friends.

Cannot believe we hadn't discovered this outstanding Thai earlier, despite it being only 5 minutes from our home. Presentation, quality, flavour, innovation and service easily surpass anything in the area, or indeed the whole town. A gem, and an almost full house on a Monday night is testament to that. Will be back!
Miss Food
Fantastic authentic Thai cuisine with a friendly owner Ped who loves to chat and offer us drinks on him.
Service was superb throughout the evening to all customers - new and regulars!
Will certainly be back and recommend to ALL!

Absolutely outstanding in every way. The hospitality of the owner, Ped, was warm, charming and funny. The flavours of the dishes was simply delectable. We had one entree, 6 mains and two deserts and loved every one of them. The 3 kids were even given free deserts too. Having tried so many restaurants and cafes in Melbourne, I have no reservations in recommending Peds Thai in Camberwell to all who love that cuisine.

Underated Authentic thai place! Really great food and best service we've had for awhile. Was just passing by the neighborhood and decided to take a chance and so glad we went in! The staff was so friendly, nice and very helpful. Thank you for a great night.

You feel like part of the family when you visit Ped's. We have been going to Ped's since he had a restaurant at another location years ago and was so happy to see the new restaurant was close to home. All the staff are lovely, warm and welcoming, and Ped himself is such a character, and walks around chatting to everyone. But most importantly, the food is AMAZING! It is so fresh and authentic, not heavy or greasy like some thai can be. My favourite is the pad thai noodles and the soft shell crab :)

Don't know why there's negative reviews for this place. Recently opened Thai place thats decent authentic thai. Its a good addition to the local scene, after replacing another Thai place that got replaced with Ray White.

New restaurant in the suburb, everytime I went pass I thought I would give it a try since the restaurant has a nice and spacious design as seen from outside. Coming in on a weekday for a quick dinner on my own, I ordered the pad thai with beef and OMG it's so delicioussss *mouth-watering*. It's definitely the best pad thai I ever had, and everything about it is just so right: the flavour, the texture, the ingredients combination. The price is a bit more expensive than other thai restaurant, but you wouldn't be disappointed for what you paid. Will come back soon to try other dishes.

Worst Thai I've ever had unfortunately. Close to home so we thought we'd try it. Unfortunately no Flavour, particularly the curry. Very disappointed. Going to get a pizza

What a find. Massaman was delicious; tender with a rich sauce. Pad Thai was very good, just remember to add the chilli yourself as it comes as a condiment with nuts on the side. Staff were very attentive and friendly. Will definitely return.

The fit-out and ambiance were very good and there were some interesting dishes but the portions were very small. The entrees we had were all good and attractively served. The main courses weren't quite as impressive. Three of us ordered BBQ pork neck and it was very tasty but not main course size. The Beau Jah - deep fried seafood and chicken with cashew nuts was good but not not outstanding. I'll probably give this new restaurant another try but there are so many Thai restaurants in the area now that it'll need to be really good (or really cheap) to survive.

Love this place. The restaurant is nicely decorated and has such a welcoming atmosphere. The owner Ped has unique friendly character and the staffs are very friendly. The massaman curry is to die for, the beef is very tender and melts in your mouth. We order the money bag and they're the best money bag I've had. The foods are all well-presented. The little carrot flower is so cute and the demonstration is very cool. Will definitely go back again.

Pleasantly surprised by the standard of Thai food here! We went as a group of 10 and the staff was very accommodating to our unique requests. Lovely vibe! We had the banquet and all the dishes were vibrant and fresh; the basil chilli chicken stir fry and the tender melt-in-your-mouth beef massaman curry were a standout, great curries and flavourful entrees with just the right amount of spice and herbs. Very fresh and tasty! Will definitely return :)

My partner and I heard of this new place and tonight we were able to finally go for dinner. The host Ped was really friendly as were all the staff. We had a range of food from fish cakes to the coconut custard amd all were amazing. We ate plenty but the food was so fresh we don't have the bloated feeling from heavy meals. We will definitely be coming again and will recommend to our friends.

Decided to try this new Thai in Camberwell, I was a little apprehensive as I felt it was quite expensive for Thai however we will definatly we back.

Although we had to wait a while to order and then for our food as they were low staffed the customer service was amazing l, the owner ped has a quirky warm personality and ensures all his guests are looked after the staff were attentive.

We ordered the shared entree which was delicious my only issue would be there needs to be a mixed entree for two l. If you are sharing you need to buy two mixed entrees at 30 which I thought was quite steep but delicious l. We also orders the pad Thai and massam curry with roti. The beef was so tender and juicy and fell apart easily, the sauce to die for and made you want more.

We hope this restaurant stays around for a while As the food and service is worth the extra money you pay. Can't wait to go back
Steve
First visit and will be going back. A new restaurant run by an old hand. Very good Thai food and well presented. Ped is a great character and very friendly. The tiger beef main is excellent.
